Abstract:Background Growing evidence indicates that homocysteine is a noteworthy marker for general health status. However, research regarding plasma total homocysteine (tHcy) levels and bone mineral density (BMD) is sparse and controversial. Hence, we aimed to investigate the association between plasma tHcy level within normal range and lumbar BMD in adults. Methods In this cross-sectional study, using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey database, data on 10748 adults aged between 30 and 85 years were analyzed. The weighted multiple logistic regression analyses were conducted to evaluate the association between plasma tHcy level and lumbar BMD. The fitted smoothing curves were performed to explore potential non-linear relationships. When non-linearity was detected, we further calculated the inflection point using a recursive algorithm and constructed a weighted two-piecewise linear regression model. Results After adjusting for all the covariates, the association between plasma tHcy and lumbar BMD was different in various age groups (adults aged 30–49 years: β = −0.0004, 95% CI −0.0025, 0.0018; adults aged 50–69 years: β = 0.0001, 95% CI −0.0025, 0.0026; adults aged 70–85 years: β = 0.0050, 95% CI 0.0008, 0.0092). In the subgroup analysis stratified by gender, this association also differed based on gender. There was a negative trend in females (aged 30–49 years: β = −0.0022, 95% CI −0.0054, 0.0011; aged 50–69 years: β = −0.0028, 95% CI −0.0062, 0.0007), and a positive trend in males (aged 30–49 years: β = 0.0018, 95% CI −0.0012, 0.0048; aged 50–69 years: β = 0.0027, 95% CI −0.0009, 0.0063) in both 30–49 years group and 50–69 years group. In the 70–85 years group, this association was significantly positive in males ( β = 0.0136, 95% CI 0.0068, 0.0204), but was not significantly different in females ( β = 0.0007, 95% CI −0.0046, 0.0060). Conclusion The correlation between plasma tHcy level within the normal range and lumbar BMD differs by age and gender.
The Role of Sex Hormones on Bone Mineral Density, Marrow Adiposity, and Muscle Adiposity in Middle-Aged and Older Men

Abstract:Purpose The etiology of age-related bone loss is less clear in men. This study is aimed to observe the variations of endogenous sex hormone concentrations with increasing of age in men, and investigate their relations to bone mass, marrow adiposity, and muscle adiposity. Methods A total of 199 community-dwelling Chinese men (aged 41 to 82 years) were included and measured of serum total estradiol, total testosterone, and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) concentrations by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Vertebral trabecular volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD) was measured by quantitative computed tomography for all participants, and vertebral marrow fat content and erector muscle fat content were quantified by Chemistry-shift-encoding magnetic resonance imaging in 62 participants. Results In this population, FSH concentration increased ( p < 0.001) gradually with aging. Lower vBMD was independently associated with higher FSH concentration (β = -0.216, p < 0.001), but not with total estradiol or total testosterone. For each standard deviation increase in FSH there was a 50% higher risk of an individual having osteopenia or osteoporosis (vBMD < 120 mg/cm 3 ). Marrow fat content and erector muscle fat content were greater in osteopenic and osteoporotic men, but there were no associations with sex hormones concentrations. Conclusion In summary, FSH but not total estradiol or total testosterone is related to vertebral trabecular vBMD in middle-aged and older Chinese men. Neither marrow adiposity nor muscle adiposity is associated with sex hormones.

Association between sleep quality and bone mineral density in Chinese women vary by age and menopausal status.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:Sleep quality is closely related to bone health. Aging and estrogen deficiency are known determinants of poor sleep quality and osteoporosis. However, the impact of aging and menopause on the associations between sleep quality and bone mineral density (BMD) remains unclear. This study aimed to examine the association between sleep quality and BMD in Chinese women vary by age groups and menopausal status. METHODS:A total of 2067 women aged 18-80 years were included. Sleep quality was measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the score >7 was indicative of poor sleep quality. BMD was determined using the dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Participants were categorized into three age groups. Multiple linear regression models were conducted to evaluate the associations between sleep quality and BMD. Covariates included in the models were age, menopausal status, weight, height, percent body fat, physical activity, alcohol drinking, calcium supplement use, marital status, education and metabolic diseases. RESULTS:We observed that poor sleep quality was correlated to low total BMD and legs BMD in middle-aged women after adjusting for potential confounders. Furthermore, when we reran the regression models based on menopausal status in middle-aged women, significant associations between BMD and sleep quality were observed in premenopausal and early postmenopausal groups. CONCLUSION:Our findings showed a more robust association between sleep quality and BMD in premenopausal and early menopausal groups. Further studies should be conducted to explore whether sleep quality intervention would improve bone health of women in these periods and prevent osteoporosis in their late life.
Associations between serum total cholesterol level and bone mineral density in older adults

Abstract:Background: Osteoporosis is a major clinical problem in elderly men and women. The correlation between total cholesterol and bone mineral density remains controversial. NHANES is the cornerstone for national nutrition monitoring to inform nutrition and health policy. Methods: Sample sizes and the location of the study and the time when it was conducted: we obtained 4236 non-cancer elderly from NHANES (National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey) database from 1999 to 2006. Data were analyzed with the use of the statistical packages R and EmpowerStats. We analyzed the relationship between total cholesterol and lumbar bone mineral density. We performed research population description, stratified analysis, single factor analysis, multiple equation regression analysis, smooth curve fitting, and threshold effect and saturation effect analysis. Results: A significant negative association between serum cholesterol levels and bone mineral density of the lumbar spine in US non cancer affected older adults aged 60 years or older. Older adults ≥ 70 years of age had an inflection point at 280 mg / dl, and those with moderate physical activity had an inflection point at 199 mg / dl, The smooth curves they fitted were all U-shaped. Conclusions: There is a negative association between total cholesterol and lumbar spine bone mineral density in non-cancer elderly greater than or equal to 60 years of age.

Abstract:Growing evidence indicates that testosterone is a conspicuous marker for assessing male bone mineral density (BMD). However, research regarding testosterone levels and BMD is sparse and controversial for females. Hence, we aimed to investigate the association between testosterone levels and BMD among adult females aged 40–60 years in the United States. In this cross-sectional study, all participants were part of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2011–2016). A weighted general linear model was used to estimate the association between testosterone levels and lumbar BMD. Age, race, income level, education level, body mass index (BMI), blood urea nitrogen (BUN) level, serum uric acid (UA) level, serum calcium (Ca) level, serum phosphorus (P) level, the use of oral contraceptive pills, the use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT), smoking status, drinking status, and the use of corticosteroids were adjusted using a weighted multiple regression model. Subgroup analyses were performed using the same regression model. We included 2198 female participants in the study, and testosterone levels were positively associated with lumbar BMD after adjusting for all the covariates ( β = 1.12, 95% CI 0.31, 1.93). In subgroup analyses, the associations in the fourth quartile of testosterone levels were stronger for the participants aged 40–50 years old (quartile 4, β = 42.92, 95% CI 7.53, 78.30 vs. quartile 1) and 50 to 60-year-old (quartile 4, β = 32.41, 95% CI 0.14, 64.69 vs. quartile 1). Similar results were found in other subgroups, including subgroups for race (Non-Hispanic Black, Other), income level (income ≤ 1.3, income > 3.5), education level (college or higher), BMI > 25 kg/m 2 , BUN levels ≤ 20 mg/dL, UA levels ≤ 6 mg/dL, Ca levels ≤ 10.1 mg/dL, P levels ≤ 5 mg/dL, drinking status, never smoker, never taking birth control pills, and HRT user. There was no interaction among the covariates in the association between lumbar BMD and testosterone levels ( P for interaction > 0.05). In US adult females aged 40–60 years, the testosterone level was a positive predictor of the lumbar BMD after adjusting for covariates.

Abstract:Purpose: To investigate the age and gender differences in vertebral bone marrow adipose tissue (BMAT) and volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD).Method: A total of 427 healthy adults, including 175 males (41 %) and 252 females (59 %) with an age range of 21-82 years, underwent MRI and quantitative CT examinations of the lumbar spine (L2-L4), and the corresponding BMAT and vBMD values were measured. The age-related progressions of BMAT and vBMD in men and women were evaluated and compared.Results: In males, vertebral BMAT rose gradually throughout life, while in females, BMAT increased sharply between 41 and 60 years of age. In participants aged < 40 years, BMAT was greater in males compared to females (p <= 0.01), while after the age of 60, BMAT was higher in females (p < 0.05). In males, vBMD decreased gradually with age, while in females, there was a sharp decrease in vBMD after the age of 40 years. At age of 31-40 years, vBMD was higher in females (P < 0.002), while at age > 60 years, vBMD was higher in males (61-70 years, P < 0.01; > 70 years, P = 0.02).Conclusions: We found significant age and gender differences in lumbar BMAT and vBMD. These findings will help to improve our understanding of the interaction between bone marrow fat content and bone mineral density in the ageing process.
Genetically Predicted Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin and Bone Mineral Density: A Mendelian Randomization Study

Abstract:Previous observational studies have identified various risk factors associated with the development of osteoporosis, including sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG). The aim of this study was to determine the potential causal effects of circulating SHBG concentrations on bone mineral density (BMD). Two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) approach was applied in analyses. From summary-level data of genome-wide association studies (GWAS), we selected 11 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with SHBG levels as instrumental variable, and used summary statistics for BMD at forearm (FA) ( n = 8143), femoral neck (FN) ( n = 32,735), lumbar spine (LS) ( n = 28,498) and heel (HL) ( n = 394,929), and total-body BMD of different age-stages (15 or less, 15–30, 30–45, 45–60, 60 or more years old) ( n = 67,358). Inverse causal associations was observed between SHBG levels and FA BMD (Effect = − 0.26; 95% CI − 0.49 to − 0.04; P = 0.022), HL eBMD (Effect = − 0.09; 95% CI − 0.12 to − 0.06; P = 3.19 × 10 –9 ), and total-body BMD in people aged 45–60 years (Effect = − 0.16; 95% CI − 0.31 to − 2.4 × 10 –3 ; P = 0.047) and over 60 years (Effect = − 0.19; 95% CI − 0.33 to − 0.05; P = 0.006). Our study demonstrates that circulating SHBG concentrations are inversely associated with FA and HL eBMD, and total-body BMD in people aged over 45 years, suggesting that the role of SHBG in the development of osteoporosis might be affected by chronological age of patients and skeletal sites.
Low levels of free testosterone correlated with bone mineral densities of femoral necks in aged healthy Shanghainese men

Abstract:The aim of the study was to investigate the influence of serum testosterone concentrations on bone mineral densities (BMDs) in healthy aged men in Shanghai area. Eighty-four participants, registered in the physical examination center of our hospital were included. Liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) was used to measure concentrations of total testosterone (TT) and free testosterone (FT) in serum. BMDs of the lumbar spine, femoral neck, the trochanter major, and Ward's triangle were determined with dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). The correlations of TT and FT with BMDs at the different skeleton sites were analyzed; stratified analyses by age were performed with 10-year range groups and the changing trends of TT and FT with increasing age were further investigated. In addition, we performed a stratified quartile TT and FT analysis of their correlations with BMDs of different bones in each group. The average age of the participants was 71.8 ± 9.6 years (50-90 years). In a stratified analysis by age, no significant TT changes with increasing age was found, but there was a significant decrease of FT in men older than 80 years (p<0.05). In a stratified FT quartile analysis, FT in the first quartile group correlated significantly with BMDs of the lumbar spine, femoral neck and Ward's triangle; however, there was only a significant correlation between FT and BMD of the femoral neck after adjustment for age and body mass index (BMI). FT blood serum concentrations decreased significantly in healthy men aged over 80 and positively correlated with BMDs of femoral necks.
[Age-Related Change of Bone Biochemical Markers and Their Relationships to Mineral Density in Healthy Chinese Men].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To study the age-related changes of bone formation markers, i.e., serum bone alkaline phosphatase (sBAP) and serum osteocalcin (sOC), bone resorption marker, i.e., cross-linked N-telopeptides of type 1 collagen (sNTX), and bone mineral density (BMD) in healthy men.METHODS:Serum sBAP, sOC, and sNTX of 389 randomly selected males, aged 20 - 80, all of Han nationality, were measured by using enzyme-linked immunosorbent (ELISA). Dual energy X-ray densitometer was used to measure the BMD of the lumbar vertebrae, left femoral neck, Ward's triangle, and hip. The relationships of these markers to age were analyzed.RESULTS:(1) The sBAP, sOC, and sNTX were negatively correlated with age, the cubic regression model being better with age-related changes of bone biochemical markers as compared with the other regression models (R(2) = 0.013 - 0.029, P < 0.05); (2) When all subjects were stratified by 10-years, the bone biochemical marker values were the highest in the age group 20 - 29, with the sBAP of 30.9 U/L +/- 12.6 U/L, sOC of 12.6 microg/L +/- 6.2 microg/L, and sNTX of 18.2 micromol/L +/- 6.6 micromol/L; then decreased with aging and to a nadir level in the age group 50 - 59, with the sBAP of 26.9 U/L +/- 8.6 U/L, sOC of 9.2 microg/L +/- 5.3 microg/L, and sNTX of 15.6 micromol/L +/- 6.1 micromol/L. After the age of 60, sNTX increased slightly 16.0 micromol/L +/- 6.1 micromol/L, however, BAP and sOC remained stable; (3) After adjustment for age, height, weight, BMI and smoking, serum BAP was negatively correlated with BMD of multiple skeletal sites. sOC was inversely associated with BMD of multiple skeletal sites except lateral spine; and sNTX was negatively correlated with BMD of the lumbar spine and total hip.CONCLUSION:Negatively correlated with BMD, sBAP, sOC, and sNTX may be sensitive and relatively specific markers to evaluate age-related changes of bone turnover.
Age-Related Changes in Trabecular Bone Score and Bone Mineral Density in Chinese Men: A Cross-Sectional and Longitudinal Study

Abstract:Purpose This study was designed to explore age-related changes in trabecular bone score (TBS) and bone mineral density (BMD) in Chinese men through cross-sectional and longitudinal studies. Patients and Methods We included adult men who had at least twice TBS and BMD examinations in our hospital between January 2013 and December 2020. All men were divided into an age subgroup per 10 years, comparing differences in baseline lumbar spine (LS) TBS and BMD at various parts between each age group and analyzing age-related changes in TBS and BMD during follow-up. Results Baseline data showed that in men aged 36 to 85 years, BMD in the hip region showed a decreasing trend with age (P for trend < 0.01). However, TBS reached a high value around the age of 50, after which it decreased with age (P for trend = 0.03). During a mean follow-up of 3 years, the average annual change rate at TBS was −0.17% in men aged 36 to 85 years, with the fastest decrease rate −1.08% at 66 to 75 years (P < 0.05). The mean annual rate of change in LS BMD in different age subgroups increased with age (P for trend = 0.001). There was no significant decrease in mean annual change in BMD in hip regions. Conclusion In men aged 36~85 years, the trend of TBS was inconsistent with BMD. Men experience a high value of LS TBS around age 50, later than the commonly believed age of peak BMD, which may reflect developmental differences between bone microstructure and bone minerals. The TBS may be used as a better indicator of changes in bone strength than BMD in adult men at short-term follow-up. The rapid loss of TBS at age 66 to 75 may have implications for the prevention and medication of osteoporosis in men.

Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin (SHBG) As an Independent Determinant of Bone Mineral Density (BMD) among Chinese Middle-Aged and Elderly Men.

Abstract:The aim of the study was to assess the impact of sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) on bone mineral density (BMD) and bone turnover among Chinese middle-aged and elderly men. This cross-sectional study was carried out among 404 Chinese men aged over 45 years. BMD was measured with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, and participants' blood was collected for bone-specific alkaline phosphates (BSAP), SHBG and testosterone assay. Osteoporotic men had lower free testosterone (FT) and higher levels of SHBG, and BSAP than the osteopenia and normal groups. When SHBG levels were divided into quartiles, FT levels decreased and prevalence of osteoporosis increased with higher SHBG levels. Compared with subjects in the lowest quartile of SHBG levels (<36.55 nmol/l), subjects in the third quartile [OR (95 % CI) 2.998 (1.460-6.157), p = 0.002] and the highest quartile [OR (95 % CI) 4.439 (2.192-8.991), p < 0.001] were more likely to suffer with osteoporosis. FT was significantly positive related to total hip BMD and total lumbar BMD, whereas there was no association between TT and BMD after adjusting for age, BMI and FT. SHBG levels were also inversely related to BMD. SHBG could explain 1.4-2.1 % of the BMD variance after adjustment for age, BMI and FT. No association was found between BSAP and SHBG, TT and FT. Logistic regression analysis showed that BMI, smoking and FT or SHBG was independently associated with the presence of osteoporosis. Serum FT levels were positively correlated with BMD, while SHBG levels were inversely related to BMD. Increasing SHBG level was an independent risk factor for osteoporosis among Chinese men.
Age and sex effects on the association between body composition and bone mineral density in healthy Chinese men and women.

Abstract:Objective: Many studies have examined the relationships between body composition and bone mineral density (BMD), but little attention has been given to how these relationships vary by age and sex. The aim of this study was to investigate the distributions of lean mass (LM), fat mass (FM), and BMD and the correlation between body composition and BMD in Chinese men and women of different ages. Methods: In total, the body compositions of 1,475 men and 1,534 women aged 20 to 96 years were analyzed. Using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry, we measured the BMD of the spine, femur, and total body and the LM, FM, and percentage of body fat (Fat %). The population was divided into groups based on age and sex: young, premenopausal, and postmenopausal women and young, middle-aged, and older men. The correlations between BMD and variables of body composition were investigated using the Pearson correlation test and multiple regression analysis. Results: The peak BMD values of the spine, femur, and total body are observed in women aged 30 to 39, 20 to 29, and 30 to 39 years, respectively, and in men aged 20 to 29 years at all sites. The peak LM, FM, and Fat % values were observed at age 40 to 49, 60 to 69, and 70 to 79 years in women, respectively, and at 40 to 49, 70 to 79, and 70 to 79 years in men, respectively. A statistically significant correlation was observed between LM and BMD of all sites (r = 0.253-0.591, P < 0.01) in all groups. However, FM was significantly correlated to BMD only in postmenopausal women and older men (r = 0.089-0.336, P < 0.01). Fat % negatively correlated to BMD in young people (r = -0.169 to -0.366, P < 0.05). When stepwise regression models were analyzed, LM remained the strongest predictor of total body, spine, and femur BMD (standardized coefficients = 0.264-0.637, P < 0.001) in Chinese men and women of different ages. Conclusions: We believe that LM is the strongest predictor of BMD at all ages for Chinese men and women, even though positive correlations between FM and BMD existed in old people.

Abstract:Identifying modifiable factors that influence bone status during adulthood to maximize bone quality is a potential primary strategy in the prevention of osteoporosis in later life. We investigated the impact of body height, body weight, body mass index, and body composition on calcaneal bone characteristics as measured with quantitative ultrasound in 441 Chinese adults (238 women) aged 20-55 yr from the middle areas of China. Body composition, including fat-free mass (FFM), muscle mass, and fat mass were obtained by bioelectrical impedance analysis. Bivariate correlation analysis demonstrated a significant negative correlation between age and broadband ultrasound attenuation (BUA), speed of sound (SOS), and stiffness index (SI) both in men (r = -0.177, p < 0.05; r = -0.499, p < 0.001; r = -0.530, p < 0.001, respectively) and women (r = -0.344, p < 0.001; r = -0.336, p < 0.001; r = -0.369, p < 0.001, respectively). Body height, body weight, FFM, and muscle mass had positive correlations with BUA, SOS, and SI in both genders, with FFM having the strongest correlation with BUA, SOS, and SI in men (r = 0.351, p < 0.001; r = 0.391, p < 0.001; r = 0.406, p < 0.001, respectively) and women (r = 0.331, p < 0.001; r = 0.288, p < 0.001; r = 0.324, p < 0.001, respectively). Fat mass had a positive correlation with BUA (r = 0.331, p < 0.001), SOS (r = 0.288, p < 0.001), and SI (r = 0.324, p < 0.001) in women, which was not found in men. Multivariate regression analysis revealed that, in both genders, FFM was a positive predictor for all 3 quantitative ultrasound variables.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To determine the relationship between serum testosterone level and lean body mass, body fat content, and bone mineral density (BMD).METHODS:The study involved 185 healthy females in Changsha, aged 45-81. Fasting serum testosterone was measured by radioimmunoassay. Hologic QDR 4500A fan beam X-ray bone densitometer was used to measure the BMD of anteroposterior lumber (AP, L(1-4)) and total hip,to measure the bone mineral content, BMD, body fat content and muscle tissue weight of head, trunk, ribs, pelvis, spine, upper limbs, lower limbs and the total body. Body weight, lean body mass and body fat percentage were calculated. SPSS11.0 software was used to conduct regression analysis.RESULTS:(1) Serum testosterone showed no correlation with lean body mass, body fat content, and body fat percentage. (2) Serum testosterone was positively related with the BMD of lumbar spine and hip, but showed no correlation with the BMD after adjustment of age and years since postmenopause. (3) Lean body mass showed significant positive correlation with the BMD of different sites. Total body fat content showed positive correlation with the BMD of total hip, while body fat percentage showed negative correlation with the BMD of the whole body.CONCLUSION:Keeping lean body mass benefits postmenopausal women to maintain bone mineral content, and taking androgen should still be cautious.
Sex-specific and Age-Specific Characteristics of Body Composition and Its Effect on Bone Mineral Density in Adults in Southern China: a Cross-Sectional Study.

Abstract:ObjectivesThis study was an attempt to investigate the variation trend of body composition with ageing and explore the association between regional body composition and bone mineral density (BMD).DesignCross-sectional study.Setting and participantsA total of 5749 healthy adults aged 20–95 years was recruited from 2004 to 2017.Primary outcome measuresWhole-body lean mass (LM), fat mass (FM), android FM, gynoid FM, appendicular lean mass (ALM) and BMD in the lumbar spine, femoral neck and total hip were obtained by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). The android/gynoid fat mass ratio (A/G FMR) based on DXA scan was calculated as an indicator of adipose distribution. Pearson correlation and multiple linear regression analyses were used to determine the associations between body composition, adipose distribution, and BMD of each skeletal site.ResultsWhole-body FM, percentage of whole-body FM, Android FM and A/G FMR consistently increased with age in both genders, especially in women, and ALM began to decrease in the fifth decade for both men and women. In multivariable linear regression models with age, body mass index, A/G FMR and ALM as predictor variables, ALM was associated with the most BMD variance of all skeletal sites in men (standard β ranged from 0.207 to 0.405, p<0.001), although not the largest but still a positive predictor of BMD in women (standard β ranged from 0.074 to 0.186, p<0.05). A/G FMR was an inverse predictor of BMD at all skeletal sites for women (standard β ranged from −249 to −0.052, p<0.01) but not in men.ConclusionsIn this large cohort of Chinese adults, ALM had a strong positive association with BMD in both genders. A/G FMR as an indicator of central adipose accumulation was inversely associated with BMD in women but not in men.

Abstract:This study aims to investigate the association of serum TSH with BMD in Chinese adults with normal thyroid function. These participants were divided into tertiles based on serum TSH levels. Linear regression model and multinomial logistic regression models were used to analyze the associations of continuous BMD and categorical BMD with serum TSH, respectively. In women younger than 60 years, BMD decreased with the increase of TSH at normal level, while in women older than 60 years, BMD increased with the increase of TSH at normal level; besides, the BMD of women younger than 60 years old was significantly higher than that of women over 60 years old (156.05 ± 39.34 mg/cm3 vs. 86.95 ± 29.51 mg/cm3, P < 0.001). Linear regression results showed negative associations of BMD and normal TSH level in women with age younger than 60 years (β=-4.34, P < 0.001), but this inverse trend was observed in women over 60 years old (β = 2.04, P = 0.041). Both in men younger than 60 years and over 60 years old, BMD decreased with the increase of TSH at normal levels; besides, the BMD of men younger than 60 years was significantly higher than those over 60 years old (143.08 ± 32.76 mg/cm3 vs. 108.13 ± 31.99 mg/cm3, P < 0.001). The results demonstrated an opposite trend in BMD at normal TSH levels in younger and elder females, that is, in females younger than 60 years, BMD decreased with the increase of TSH, which indicated that TSH might play a different role in younger and elder females. However, this trend was not significant in males. Abstract:Objective To investigate the relationship between serum testosterone(T)levels and parameters of bone mineral density(BMD)and bone turnover markers in aging male patients with metabolic syndrome(MS).Methods One hundred and eleven aged 60-90 years male patients were divided into two groups,namely MS group(sixty-one)and non-MS group(fifty).Serum T,N-MID-Osteocalcin(N-MID-OC),total type I collagen N-terminal extension peptide(PINP),serum β-collagen special series(β-CTX)levels were measured,and left forearm,left hip and lumbar vertebrae BMD were detected by dual energy X-ray densitometer.The relationship between T levels and parameters of BMD and bone turnover markers was analysed.Results T,N-MID-OC,PINP,left forearm BMD,left hip BMD,lumbar vertebrae BMD levels were lower andβ-CTX level were higher in MS group than those in non-MS group(P0.05).As the increase of MS contents,serum T,N-MID-OC,PINP levels and lumbar vertebrae BMD,hip BMD,forearm BMD decreased gradually,and β-CTX level increased.In MS group,there were significant positive correlation respectively between the levels of T and N-MID-OC,PINP,lumbar vertebrae BMD,hip BMD,forearm BMD.There was a negative relationship between the levels of serum T and β-CTX.Conclusion Serum T level is closely related to BMD and biochemical markers of bone turnover in aged male patients with metabolic syndrome.Lower serum T level may be an the independent factor for osteoporosis in aged men.

Abstract:Objective To investigate the factors associated with lumbar bone mineral density (LBMD) in old- aged men. Methods A cross- sectional survey was conducted in 1066 men aged 80 and over. LBMD measurement and laboratory tests were performed in all subjects. Univariate analysis and multivariate regression analyses were applied to reveal independent associated factors of LBMD. Results Body mass index (β=0.018, P<0.01), serum C- telopeptide of type 1 col agen (CTX,β=- 0.226, P<0.01), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD,β=- 0.047, P<0.01), serum estradiol (β=0.002, P<0.01) were independent associated factors of LBMD. Conclusion Study shows that body mass index, serum estradiol and CTX levels, and COPD are factors associated with LBMD in men aged 80 and over.
