Abstract:Introduction Postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) is the most common sequela of herpes zoster, and it is often refractory to guideline-recommended treatments. Acupuncture therapy, a wildly applied complementary-alternative treatment, may help in the management of PHN. Diverse types of acupuncture therapy for PHN have been proposed, however, their comparative efficacies remain unclear. This study protocol plans to compare the efficacy and safety of different acupuncture therapies for PHN. Methods and analysis Databases including MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Chinese Biomedical Database, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, VIP Database, Wanfang Database, WHO International Clinical Trials Registry Platform, ClinicalTrials.gov, Chinese Clinical Trial Register and OpenGrey will be searched from their inception to January 2022. Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) assessing the effectiveness of acupuncture therapy on the management of PHN will be selected. The primary outcome is pain intensity. Secondary outcomes include negative emotions, sleep condition, quality of life and adverse events. Reviewers will conduct study selection, data extraction and risk of bias assessment procedures. Then, standard pair-wised meta-analysis and Bayesian network meta-analysis will be performed (if applicable). The Confidence in Network Meta-Analysis application will be used to assess the confidence in the evidence for the primary outcome. Ethics and dissemination All data used for this study will be extracted from published RCTs, thus, no ethical approval will be required. Abstract:Introduction Several systematic reviews and meta-analysis indicate that acupuncture and related therapies may be a valuable adjunctive technique to pharmacological interventions for pain management of postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). However, the robustness of the results of these studies has not been evaluated. The aim of this proposed umbrella review is to provide more reliable evidence of the effectiveness of acupuncture therapy for PHN based on medical references for healthcare decision makers. Methods and analysis PubMed, EMBASE, The Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Chinese BioMedical Literature Database, VIP Database for Chinese Technical Periodicals, China National Knowledge Infrastructure and Wan fang Database will be used to retrieve reviews. The time of publication will be limited from inception to March 2021. Two reviewers will screen all retrieved articles independently to identify their eligibility and extract the data. The quality will be assessed independently by two trained reviewers using Assessment of Multiple Systematic Reviews-2 for methodological quality, Risk of Bias in Systematic Review for level of bias, Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis for reporting quality and Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation for the quality of evidence. Any disagreements will be settled by discussion or the involvement of a third reviewer. Ethics and dissemination The protocol of this review does not require ethical approval because the research will be based on publicly available data. Abstract:Introduction Pain can affect people regardless of age, gender or ethnicity. Chronic central neuropathic pain (CCNP) is a debilitating condition that affects populations such as stroke survivors, amputees, spinal cord injury patients and patients with multiple sclerosis, with prevalence rates between 30% and 80%. This condition can be caused by a lesion or disease affecting the somatosensory system. CCNP is notoriously drug resistant, and few effective CCNP treatment or management strategies exist. The emergence of non-invasive brain stimulation and neuromodulation techniques provide novel avenues for managing chronic central neuropathic pain. This scoping review aims to systematically identify the methods and effectiveness of non-invasive brain stimulation techniques for treating and managing chronic central neuropathic pain. Methods and analysis The following databases will be searched systematically: PubMed, EMBASE, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Institute of Electric and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), Association of Computing Machinary (ACM) and Scopus. Additional literature will be identified by searching the reference lists of identified studies. Studies will include reviews and original research in both published and grey literatures. Two reviewers will independently screen identified studies for final inclusion. A quantitative analysis on the intervention type, application and efficacy will be synthesised along with a qualitative analysis to describe the effectiveness of each intervention. Ethics and dissemination No primary data will be collected and hence formal ethics review is not required. The results of the scoping review will be presented at relevant national and international conferences, published in a peer-reviewed journal and provided to the stakeholders with plain language to be posted on their websites. This scoping review will provide a foundation to guide the development of future primary research on non-invasive brain stimulation and CCNP.

Efficacy of different acupuncture therapies on postherpetic neuralgia: A Bayesian network meta-analysis

Abstract:Background: Postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) is a common, complex, and refractory type of neuropathic pain. Several systematic reviews support the efficacy of acupuncture and related treatments for PHN. Nevertheless, the efficacy of various acupuncture-related treatments for PHN remains debatable. Objective: We aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of acupuncture-related treatments for PHN, identify the most effective acupuncture-related treatments, and expound on the current inadequacies and prospects in the applications of acupuncture-related therapies. Methods: We searched PubMed, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Embase, Web of Science, Google Scholar, four Chinese databases (China National Knowledge Infrastructure, China Biomedical, Chongqing VIP, and Wan Fang databases), clinical research registration platform (World Health Organization International Clinical Trial Registration platform, China Clinical Trial Registration Center) for relevant studies. We also examined previous meta-analyses; gray literature; and reference lists of the selected studies. We then evaluated the risk of bias in the included studies and performed a Bayesian multiple network meta-analysis. Results: We included 29 randomized controlled trials comprising 1,973 patients, of which five studies showed a high risk of bias. The pairwise meta-analysis results revealed that the efficacy of all acupuncture-related treatments for pain relief related to PHN was significantly better than antiepileptics. The network meta-analysis results showed that pricking and cupping plus antiepileptics were the most effective treatment, followed by electroacupuncture (EA) plus antiepileptics for pain relief in patients with PHN. EA plus antiepileptics ranked the best regarding reduced Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS) scores in patients with PHN. No results were found regarding the total response rate or quality of life in this study. Acupuncture-related treatments showed a lower incidence of adverse events than that of antiepileptics. Conclusion: Acupuncture-related therapies are potential treatment options for PHN and are safe. Pricking and cupping plus antiepileptics, are the most effective acupuncture-related techniques for pain relief, while EA plus antiepileptics is the best acupuncture-related technique for improving PHN-related insomnia and depression symptoms. However, owing to the limitations of this study, these conclusions should be cautiously interpreted, and future high-quality studies are needed. Abstract:Background: As the most common long-term complication of herpes zoster (HZ), postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) is characterized by chronic, persistent, and debilitating neuropathic pain. PHN seriously harms human health and currently becomes a topic of clinical importance. To date, the common methods of pain management in PHN include external therapies of traditional Chinese medicine and surgical treatments. However, there is no high-quality or direct evidence of their comparative effectiveness. This review aims to provide a network meta-analysis to compare the efficacy of external therapies of traditional Chinese medicine and surgical treatments in the pain management of PHN. Methods: Databases such as PubMed, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, EMBASE, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, China Biology Medicine Disc will be searched for relevant randomized controlled trials to obtain literatures on the treatment of PHN with external therapies of traditional Chinese medicine and surgical treatments, and clinical randomized controlled trials will be screened out from their inception to August 5, 2022. The participant intervention comparator outcomes of this study are as flowing: P, patients with PHN; I, external therapies of traditional Chinese medicine and surgical treatments; C, no treatment, pharmacological placebo, treatment as usual or sham acupuncture groups; O, primary outcome is pain intensity, and secondary outcomes are onset of pain relief time, quality of life, therapeutic effective rate and reverse effects. Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool will be used in assessing literature's quality. Network meta-analyses will be conducted to generate estimates of comparative effectiveness of each intervention class and rankings of their effectiveness, in terms of pain management. Result: This systematic review and network meta-analysis will provide evidence of the efficacy of different therapeutic methods for pain management in PHN, to show which forms of therapy are more commonly used with higher effectiveness. Discussion: The results will systematically provide suggestions for medical practitioners to choose effective, time-saving and economical pain management method for PHN.
Acupuncture and Moxibustion Combined with Cupping for the Treatment of Post-Herpetic Neuralgia

Abstract:Abstract Background: There are still controversies between the curative effect of acupuncture combined with cupping therapy and western medicine for post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN). Our meta-analysis fully incorporates the research of acupuncture combined with cupping therapy versus Western medicine for PHN, aiming to explore the difference in the efficacy of the 2 therapies, so as to provide guidance for clinical treatment. Methods: We searched PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, CNKI, Wanfang, CQVIP, CBM, from establishment of the database to September, 2020. Include studies that are clearly defined as PHN or herpes zoster, and exclude duplicate publications; studies with no full text, incomplete information, or inability to extract data; the definition of exposure is quite different from most literature; animal experiments. Results: The total effective rate (relative ratio [RR] = 1.21, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.12–1.31) and the rate of remarkable effect (RR = 1.46, 95% CI: 1.30–1.63) of acupuncture and moxibustion combined with cupping in the treatment of PHN were significantly higher than that of conventional western medicine. The visual analogue scale score of acupuncture and moxibustion combined with cupping for PHN was significantly lower than that of conventional western medicine treatment (WMD = –1.77, 95% CI [–2.79, –0.75]). In addition, acupuncture and moxibustion combined with cupping therapy significantly reduced the occurrence of PHN compared with conventional western medicine treatment after treatment of acute herpes zoster (RR = 0.30, 95% CI: 0.20–0.45). In order to explore the differences in the efficacy and preventive effects of different types of acupuncture and cupping therapy, we have further conducted a subgroup analysis. Conclusion: The effect of acupuncture and moxibustion combined with cupping in the treatment of PHN is significantly higher than that of conventional western medicine, and it can significantly prevent the occurrence of PHN. Chinese medicine should be used more widely in the treatment of PHN.

Abstract:Introduction: The efficacy of conventional treatments for treating postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) remains unsatisfactory. Thus, this multicentre, randomized controlled, assessor-blinded trial aims to investigate the efficacy and safety of electroacupuncture (EA) therapy in patients with PHN. Methods and Analysis: This multicentre randomized controlled trial will enroll 132 patients with PHN from 3 hospitals. All patients will be randomly assigned to either the EA combined with medication group or medication group through a computerized central randomization system in a 1:1 ratio. Outcome measures will be assessed before intervention, at 2, 4, 6 weeks after intervention and at the end of 8-week follow-up. Primary outcomes will be sensory thresholds and pain intensity. Secondary outcomes will include dosage of analgetic, quality of life, anxiety, and depression severity and sleep quality. All adverse effects will be assessed during the trial. Conclusions: This study will provide evidence to ascertain whether EA is effective and safe for treating PHN. Ethics and Dissemination: Ethics approval (No.ZSLL-KY-2017-025) has been obtained from the Ethics Committee of The Third Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang Chinese Medical University. Informed consent will be signed prior to subject enrolment. The results will be submitted to international peer-reviewed journals and presented at international conferences. Abstract:Abstract Background: Diabetic neuropathic pain (DNP) is a common complication of diabetes mellitus, it severely affects the quality of life of Diabetic patients. Acupuncture is proofed to have favorable effects in treating DNP, however, evidence needs to be gathered and interpreted. We will make a comprehensive review of clinical trials concerning acupuncture in treating DNP and do meta-analysis if possible. Method: The following databases will be searched from the inception to September 2020: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wan-Fang Database, and Chinese Scientific Journal Database. RCTs that evaluated acupuncture for patients with DNP will be included. The primary outcome will be patient-reported pain intensity using validated scales or verbal reporting. The secondary outcomes including the Toronto clinical scoring system, Sensory Nerve Conduction Velocity, Motor Nerve Conduction Velocity, and quality of life. The study selection, data extraction, and study quality evaluation will be performed independently by 2 researchers. A meta-analysis will be performed using RevMan V5.3 statistical software if possible; otherwise, descriptive analysis or subgroup analysis will be conducted. The quality of evidence for outcomes will be assessed with the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) approach. Results: This study will evaluate the effect and safety of acupuncture in treating DNP. Abstract:IntroductionThe chronic neuropathic pain associated with postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) can last for several months or even many years, seriously affecting the affected person’s work, sleep, mood, and daily life activities. In generaly, current treatments for PHN are at best limited and unsatisfactory, and adverse reactions are common, especially in elderly patients. Electroacupuncture (EA) is widely used clinically to manage painful diseases, but there remains a lack of evidence to support the effectiveness of EA on PHN. This study is designed to assess the efficacy and safety of EA on PHN, and to provide evidence-based medical evidence for EA treatment of PHN.MethodsThis multicenter, prospective, randomized controlled trial will recruit 448 patients with PHN at seven clinical centers. Multicenter stratified variable block randomization will be used, and the eligible patients will be randomly allocated in a ratio of 1:1 to the EA group or sham EA group. The EA group will receive 4 weeks of EA treatment, given as 30-min treatment sessions, once daily, 5 times per week, for a total of 20 treatments; the sham EA group will receive sham EA treatment under the same conditions.Planned OutcomesThe primary outcome measure is the 11-point Numeric Rating Scale pain score at week 4. The secondary outcome measures, including mechanical pain threshold, pain area of PHN, average number of pain episodes, the short-form McGill Pain Questionnaire 2, Zoster Brief Pain Inventory, the Depression, Anxiety, and Positive Outlook Scale, Patient Global Impression of Change, safety of EA, and use of concomitant medications, among others. Abstract:Background. Postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) is the most common sequela of herpes zoster, and the efficacy of the treatment regimens recommended in the guidelines is not entirely reliable. Acupuncture and moxibustion are widely used complementary alternative therapies that have a positive effect on the treatment of PHN. However, there are various forms of acupuncture and moxibustion, and there are differences in efficacy between the different forms. Methods. The retrieval work of randomised controlled trials (RCTs) of acupuncture for PHN in English databases (including PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, Web of Science) and Chinese databases (including China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), WeiPu database, WanFang database, and China Biomedical Literature Database) were conducted from the time of database creation to June 2022. Literature screening, data extraction, and evaluation of risk of bias for the included studies were carried out independently by two researchers, and data analysis was performed using Stata 14.2 software. Results. A total of 30 RCTs including 2138 patients with PHN were included. In terms of pain improvement, acupoint embedding + Western medicine group, bloodletting-cupping group, and bloodletting-cupping + Western medicine group ranked top. In terms of total efficiency, acupuncture + Western medicine group, bloodletting-cupping + Western medicine group, and acupoint embedding group ranked top. There were no statistically significant differences in the incidence of adverse events between treatment regimens. Conclusions. In a comprehensive comparison of the outcome indicators of 14 different treatment regimens, we considered acupoint injection + Western medicine and bloodletting-cupping + Western medicine to be the best combinations for the treatment of PHN. Due to the limitations of the study, the above conclusions still need to be validated in further multi-centre, large-sample prospective randomised controlled clinical trials.

Efficacy and safety of therapies related to acupuncture for acute herpes zoster: A PRISMA systematic review and network meta-analysis

Abstract:Background: Herpes zoster (HZ) is mainly characterized by intense pain and severe skin lesions, particularly during the acute phase, which seriously affects the patient's quality of life. Acupuncture is a widely used and effective treatment for HZ. However, there are many types of acupuncture, which have different curative efficacy. This study employed a network meta-analysis (NMA) to assess and rank the clinical efficacy of different acupuncture therapies. Methods: The database of Cochrane Library, Web of Science, PubMed, MEDLINE, Embase, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Chinese BioMedical Database, VIP Database, and Wanfang Database were searched from inception to December 31, 2022 to identify eligible randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of acupuncture related therapies in the treatment of acute HZ. The outcome indicators measured were visual analogue scale (VAS), date of cessation of herpes increase (DCHI), effective rate (ER), postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), and adverse events (AEs). Bayesian network meta-analyses were performed using the GeMTC package (version 1.0-1) and R software (version 4.2.3). Results: A total of 59 RCTs with 3930 patients were included. The results of this NMA were as follows: compared with pharmacotherapy, electroacupuncture (EA) + pricking and cupping (PC) shown the best efficacy to improve VAS score and reduce DCHI. In terms of ER, EA + fire needle (FN) had the highest results of probability ranking. PC was more effective in reducing the incidence of PHN. Furthermore, this study shown that the incidence of AEs associated with acupuncture-related therapies was acceptable. Conclusions: This study indicated that therapies related to acupuncture were both effective and safe in treating acute HZ, and could significantly reduce patients' symptoms such as pain and skin lesions with fewer adverse events. Clinically, the selection of the appropriate therapy should be based on practical considerations. However, due to the limitations of this study, more high-quality trials are required to evaluate the efficacy and safety of acupuncture-related therapy for the treatment of acute HZ.

Abstract:Objective: To systematically evaluate the safety and efficacy of acupuncture on patients with postherpetic neuralgia?Methods: Based on the heyword retrieval method, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI, 1978-2020), China Biomedical Literature database (CBM, 1979-2020), VIP database (WEIPU, 1989-2020), Wanfang database (1989-2020), Cochrane Library, PubMed, and Embase were searched; randomized controlled trials of the use of acupuncture in the treatment of postherpetic neuralgia were screened out; the quality of the included literatures was evaluated based on the evaluation criteria in the Cochrane Handbook, and meta-analysis was performed using RevMan 5.3. Results: Twenty-six literatures that met the criteria, involving 2,174 patients, were included; the meta-analysis showed that compared with western medicine, the use of acupuncture can improve the overall effective rate (RR = 1.24, 95% CI [1.17, 1.32], P < 0.00001) and reduce the VAS score (MD = -1.43, 95% CI [-1.97, -0.89], P < 0.00001). Conclusion: The use of acupuncture can further improve the clinical effect of patients with postherpetic neuralgia.
Therapeutic effect and safety of Tuina on sciatica: A protocol for systematic review and meta-analysis∗

Abstract:Background: Sciatica is one of the common pain symptoms in the human body, also known as radiating leg pain. Sciatica is increasingly occurring due to poor posture and lack of physical exercise all over the world. At present, many studies have indicated that Tuina can improve the clinical symptoms and functional status of sciatica. However, there is currently no relevant systematic review to evaluate and report this clinical scientific issue. Consequently, this study will conduct a meta-analysis on the effectiveness and safety of Tuina therapy for sciatica. Methods and analysis: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) related to Tuina treatment of sciatica will be retrieved from the Chinese and English databases and Clinical Trial Register. These databases include China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wan Fang Database, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, VIP Database for Chinese Technical Periodicals, PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Medline, etc. We will consider articles published in English or Chinese between database initiation and October 2021. Our team will use Review Manager Software 5.3 software provided by the Cochrane Collaborative Network to conduct this systematic review and meta-analysis. Results: This study provides a comprehensive evaluation of the effectiveness and safety of Tuina therapy for sciatica. Conclusion: The conclusion of our study will provide scientific evidence and reference to determine whether Tuina is an effective and safe intervention for patients with sciatica. Collateral-Pricking and Bloodletting Cupping Combined with Electroacupuncture for Postherpetic Neuralgia: A Meta-Analysis.

Abstract:Background Acupuncture therapy has demonstrated significant efficacy in the treatment of postherpetic neuralgia, effectively alleviating pain intensity and enhancing patients' quality of life. However, the effectiveness of collateral-pricking and bloodletting cupping combined with electroacupuncture in the treatment of postherpetic neuralgia remains a subject of controversy. We aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of collateral-pricking and bloodletting cupping combined with electroacupuncture for postherpetic neuralgia. Methods We identified relevant randomized controlled trials by conducting a comprehensive search in multiple databases: China National Knowledge Infrastructure, China Biomedical Literature, Wanfang Data, PubMed, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Embase, and Web of Science. The outcome included efficacy rate, visual analog scale (VAS)scores and pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) scores. We meticulously assessed the risk of bias in the included trials and performed a meta-analysis. Results We analyzed 9 randomized controlled trials involving 639 patients. Collateral-pricking and bloodletting cupping combined with electroacupuncture achieved a significantly higher efficacy rate (risk ratio, 1.22 [95% CI, 1.13-1.31]; P < .001), reduced theVAS scores (standardized mean difference, -1.52 [95% CI, -2.26 to -0.79]; P < .001), and improved the PSQI scores (standardized mean difference, -2.31 [95% CI, -3.97 to -0.64]; P = .007) compared with the control groups. The subgroup analysis revealed that the combined treatment of collateral-pricking and bloodletting cupping and electroacupuncture had a significantly higher total effective rate compared with the carbamazepine, electroacupuncture, and pregabalin groups (P < .05). The total efficacy rate of the collateral-pricking and bloodletting cupping combined with electroacupuncture group was superior to that of the control group, irrespective of whether 2 or 3 courses were administered (P < .05). Conclusion Existing evidence suggests that the combination of collateral-pricking and bloodletting cupping and electroacupuncture demonstrates efficacy in pain relief, improvement of sleep quality, and enhanced therapeutic outcomes for patients with postherpetic neuralgia. However, further validation through large-scale multicenter randomized controlled trials is warranted due to the limited quantity and quality of the included literature in this study.

Abstract:Objective: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were conducted to evaluate the efficacy and safety of acupuncture-related therapy in the treatment of herpes zoster (HZ) and to provide a reference for the clinical treatment of herpes zoster. Methods: PubMed, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, Web of Science, CNKI, VIP database, Wanfang Database, and SinoMED Chinese and English databases were systematically searched for RCTs on acupuncture-related therapy for HZ until February 2023. Literature screening, data extraction, and risk of bias assessment were performed independently by 2 researchers. R4.2.1 and Stata15.1 software were used for data analysis. Results: A total of 26 RCTs involving 1929 HZ patients were included, and the network meta-analysis results showed that acupotomy appeared to be most effective in terms of improving VAS scores and the time of incrustation; SUCRA cumulative probability ranking showed the best efficacy of bloodletting in improving efficiency and the time of ceasing new blisters, acupuncture in improving the time of decrustation, and moxibustion in reducing the incidence of postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). Conclusions: Through a comprehensive comparison of 9 different acupuncture therapies, acupotomy was the optimal treatment to improve VAS pain scores and the time of incrustation; bloodletting, acupuncture, fire needle, and moxibustion could be effective intervention measures to improve the time of ceasing new blisters and decrustation and reduce the incidence of PHN; Western medicine was closely related to adverse reactions. The conclusions need to be further verified due to the limitations of the study.
Acupuncture Methods for Primary Trigeminal Neuralgia: A Systematic Review and Network Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials

Abstract:Background. Primary trigeminal neuralgia (PTN) is a clinical refractory disorder characterized by excruciating pain that severely impacts the quality of life. Several studies have shown that acupuncture can improve PTN pain. However, the comparative efficacy and safety of acupuncture are unknown. Herein, a systematic review was conducted to compare the efficacy and safety of various acupuncture methods for PTN treatment. Methods. Relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published up to 1 August 2021 were obtained from PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Web of Science Core Collection, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, CQVIP Database, Wanfang Database, Allied and Alternative Medicine Database, and related registration platforms. Two authors independently selected the studies and obtained data. Cochrane Handbook was used to assess the methodological quality. We put the pain relief as the primary outcome and the response rate and adverse events as the secondary outcomes. Review Manager v5.3, ADDIS v1.16.8, and STATA v15.0 software were used for data analysis. The intraclass correlation coefficient was used to assess the consistency of the two investigators. Results. A total of 58 RCTs with 4,126 participants were obtained. The meta-analysis indicated that five acupuncture methods were superior to conventional medicine (carbamazepine) in pain reduction intensity and response rate. Meanwhile, electronic acupuncture plus manual acupuncture was the most effective therapy since it reduced pain intensity in 11 methods and improved the response rate in 10 interventions. Moreover, six interventions had acceptable adverse events, and none of the included studies reported severe adverse events. However, most pieces of evidence were ranked as critically low. Conclusion. These findings show that acupuncture methods can be effective and safe for PTN. Moreover, electronic acupuncture plus manual acupuncture maybe the best acupuncture treatment for PTN and should be administered to PTN patients. However, additional well-designed and high-quality RCTs should be conducted to verify the above findings in the future. The systematic review is registered with CRD42020221456.

Abstract:Introduction Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) reduces the quality-of-life, affects recovery, and increases the risk of chemotherapeutic failure. Acupuncture may be effective in treating CIPN. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of different types of acupuncture through a systematic review and a network meta-analysis. Therefore, the objective of this study is to indicate the relative efficacy and safety among various types of acupuncture for CIPN via a network meta-analysis (NMA) and systematic review. Methods Six electronic databases, namely, Excerpta Medica Database [Embase], PubMed, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and Wanfang Med Online will be searched for publications from 2010 to 2022. All relevant randomized controlled trials (RCTs) meeting the eligible criteria will be included. The primary outcome is the brief pain inventory score, including a brief pain inventory-short form, and autonomic nerve symptoms. Secondary outcomes include the quality-of-life assessment of anxiety, depression, and sleep of people with CIPN and adverse events. Reviewers will conduct processes for study selection, data extraction, and risk-of-bias assessment. Stata version 15.0 will be used to perform pairwise and Bayesian network NMA. Each included study will be assessed for bias using the Revised Cochrane risk-of-bias tool for randomized trials. A funnel plot will show publication bias. Discussion We assess the benefits and drawbacks of various acupuncture-related therapies, rank the efficacy of various acupuncture-related therapies for treating CIPN, and describe the best approaches or combinations of acupuncture interventions based on available data. Conclusion This study will contribute to data on the safety and efficacy of acupuncture-related therapies for treating CIPN and will help clinicians better select acupuncture treatment types to deal with the different clinical problems of CIPN. Ethics and dissemination There is no need for ethics approval for this systematic review and meta-analysis. The results will be published in a peer-reviewed journal.
