Abstract:Ammonia volatilization (NH3) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emission are the main underliers of nitrogen loss in farmlands, which can decrease nitrogen use efficiency and trigger environmental problems regarding greenhouse effects. Previous studies have regional limitations and lack universal guiding significance, as they are primarily based on individual experiments related to the effects of applying nitrogen fertilizer on maize. In this study, we performed a meta-analysis on a regional scale to investigate the overall impact of nitrogen fertilizer application on maize yield, N2O, and NH3 in Northeast China. The database included 85 studies and 1147 pairs of experimental data that were analyzed. The results showed that applying nitrogen fertilizer significantly increased maize yield, N2O emissions, and NH3 volatilization effects, and the growth rates (E) were 50.64%, 64.39%, and 69.25%, respectively. In Northeast China, the average emission factors of N2O and NH3 were 0.72% and 8.21%, respectively. The optimum nitrogen application rate for maize in Northeast China was 205 kg ha−1, resulting in 8.37% nitrogen loss (through N2O and NH3). Soil texture, alkaline nitrogen (AN) content in the soil, mean annual precipitation (MAP), nitrogen application rate, and fertilizer type were the key influential factors affecting changes in maize yield and N loss (N2O and NH3). Yield-scaled N2O and NH3 were found to be the significant emission reduction parameters that ensured maize yield. However, there was a remarkable ‘seesaw effect’ between yield-scaled N2O and NH3 under the same natural conditions (MAP and soil texture). Therefore, human activities such as reducing N surplus in soil, and N fertilizer application rate, along with selecting suitable fertilizer types should be given more attention to reduce yield-scaled N2O and NH3. Moreover, minimizing NH3 and N2O dual emission should be the main objective for green agriculture in Northeast China, rather than over-emphasizing on single emission reduction.

On-farm Assessment of Nitrogen Fertilizer Application to Corn on Nitrous Oxide Emissions

Abstract:On-farm field trials were conducted on sandy loam soils in Ontario and Quebec, Canada for three years to quantify N2O fluxes and cumulative N2O emissions as affected by the amount and timing of N fertilizer application to corn (Zea mays L.). Using the static chamber method, gas samples were collected and analyzed after preplant or sidedress N fertilization. In general, both N2O flux and total emission increased with the amount of N fertilizer applied at preplant or sidedress at the V6-V8 growth stage with peak flux rate from 30 to 900 μg N m-2 hr-1. Depending on N levels and timing of application, the cumulative emission ranged from 0.05 to 2.42 kg N ha-1 over the 28-d monitoring period, equivalent to 0.03 to 1.45% of the total N fertilizer applied. The amount and temporal distribution of rainfall played a major role in stimulating the rate of N2O emission. The flux of N2O was negligible when soil mineral N in the 0-15 cm layer was 15oC, during early plant growth stages. Cumulative N2O emission was generally higher for sidedress incorporated N than preplant application probably because of higher soil water contents and temperatures later in the growing season induced higher rates of N2O production.
Effects of Nitrogen Application Level on Rice Nutrient Uptake and Ammonia Volatilization

Abstract:The effects of different nitrogen application levels on nutrient uptake and ammonia volatilization were studied with the rice cultivar Zheyou 12 as a material.The accumulative amounts of nitrogen,phosphorus and potassium in rice plants across all growth stages showed a trend to increase with increasing nitrogen application levels from 0 to 270 kg/hm 2,but decreased at nitrogen application levels exceeding 270 kg/hm 2.Moreover,the accumulative uptake of nitrogen,phosphorus and potassium by the rice plants was increased by application of organic manure in combination with 150 kg/hm 2 nitrogen.The nitrogen uptake was high during the jointing to heading stages.Correlation analysis showed that rice yield was positively correlated with the accumulative uptake of nitrogen,phosphorus and potassium by the rice plants.The highest correlation coefficient observed was between the amount of nitrogen uptake and rice yield.The rate and accumulative amounts of ammonia volatilization increased with increasing nitrogen fertilizer application level.Compared with other stages,the rate and accumulative amount of ammonia volatilization were higher after base fertilizer application.The ammonia volatilization rates in response to the nitrogen application levels of 270 kg/hm 2 and 330 kg/hm 2 were much higher than those in the other treatments.The loss of nitrogen through ammonia volatilization accounted for 23.9% of the total applied nitrogen at the nitrogen application level of 330 kg/hm 2.
Factors affecting ammonia volatilisation from a rice-wheat rotation system.

Abstract:Some of the major factors influencing ammonia volatilisation in a rice wheat rotation system were studied. A continuous airflow enclosure method was used to measure NH3 volatilisation in a field experiment at an agricultural college in Jiangsu Province. The five treatments comprised application rates of 0, 100, 200 or 300 kg N ha(-1) as urea, per growing season with rice straw amendment when wheat was sown, and 200 kg N ha(-1) without rice straw amendment. There were three replicates in a randomised block design. Ammonia volatilisation was measured immediately after urea application in the three consecutive years 1995 to 1997. The results show that N losses through NH3 volatilisation accounted for 4-19% of N applied during the wheat growing season and for 5-11% during the rice growing season. Ammonia volatilisation was affected significantly by soil moisture and temperature before and after fertiliser application during the wheat growing season. The ratio of volatilised NH3-N to applied N after urea application during the rice growing season was as follows: top-dressing at the onset of tillering > top-dressing at the start of the booting stage > basal fertilization. The results also show that the amount of N lost through NH3 volatilisation increased with increasing N application rate, but the ratio to applied N was not affected significantly by N application rate. Amendment with rice straw had no significant effect on NH3 volatilisation.

Abstract:PurposeIn this study, we analyzed the effects of different maize varieties with nitrogen utilization efficiency, fertilizer type, and rate on the ammonia volatilization emission of farmland. Aimed to seek the best matching method to improve grain yield and fertilizer utilization efficiency of summer maize simultaneously.Materials and methodsIn field experiments, we choose two maize varieties with different nitrogen utilization efficiency (Zhengdan958, Z and Lainong14, L) as material. Set four different fertilizer treatments (200 kg N hm−2 inorganic fertilizer (U1), 100 kg N hm−2 inorganic fertilizer (U2), 200 kg N hm−2 organic fertilizer (M1), and 100 kg N hm−2 organic fertilizer (M2) to study their effect on NH3 emission and loss, maize grain yield, and nitrogen accumulation.Results and discussionAmmonia volatilization accounted for 8.61–21.68% of applied N. Under the same variety, ammonia volatilization accumulation after fertilization was as follows: U1 > U2 > M1 > M2. Ammonia volatilization rates increased first and then gradually decreased after the fertilization. The ammonia volatilization loss and cumulative loss increased due to increased nitrogen fertilizer application rate. The average nitrogen accumulation and harvest index of 200 kg N hm−2 N treatments were higher than 100 kg N hm−2 N treatments, and the difference between the inorganic fertilizer and organic fertilizer was not significant. In 2016 and 2017, the average yield of Zhengdan958 was 11,758.79 kg hm−2, which was 15.78% higher than that of Lainong14, and the difference between the two fertilizer types was not significant. The average yield of 200 kg N hm−2 N treatment was 11,959.42 kg hm−2, which was 20.13% higher than those of 100 kg N hm−2 N treatment.ConclusionsBy changing the type of fertilizer, replacing chemical fertilizers with organic fertilizer can reduce the loss of ammonia volatilization and promote the synergistic improvement to yield and resource utilization efficiency. Among them, using nitrogen-efficient varieties and using organic fertilizer instead of chemical fertilizer was beneficial to reduce the loss of ammonia volatilization, increase the accumulation of nitrogen, and promote the growth of maize to obtain high yield.

Abstract:About half of the applied nitrogen (N) is not consumed by crops, causing environmental and economic costs. This N can be lost as ammonia (NH3) volatilization, nitrous oxide (N2O) emission or leaching, among others. This work aimed to compare the amount of gaseous N losses using three different fertilizers on two consecutive experiments: one summer crop (maize) and one winter crop (wheat) in the Rolling Pampa, Argentina. The fertilizers used were urea ammonium nitrate (UAN), calcium ammonium nitrate (CAN) and AN+DMPP (ammonium nitrate‐based NPK fertilizer with DMPP nitrification inhibitor). NH3 emissions were estimated using a semi open‐static absorption system during the first month after fertilization for each experiment. N2O emissions were estimated using vented static chambers during the growing season of each crop. Results show that CAN or AN+DMPP fertilizers used instead of UAN helped to reduce NH3 volatilization by 45–50% and 62–63% on maize and wheat experiments respectively, but failed to reduce N2O emissions. In addition, contrary to the expected, AN+DMPP increased N2O emissions during the maize experiment. The majority of the gaseous N losses occurred at specific moments of the crop cycle (after N fertilization and around leaf senescence). Losses as NH3 volatilization were higher than N2O emissions in the maize experiment, as expected because of the warmer temperature during this summer crop. However, N2O emissions were higher during the wheat crop, emphasizing the importance of factors such as meteorological conditions, previous land‐use, residual soil nitrate and stubble quality on the soil.

Abstract:Previous findings have shown that the human somatosensory cortical systems that are activated by passive nonpainful electrical stimulation include the contralateral primary somatosensory area (SI), bilateral secondary somatosensory area (SII), and bilateral insula. The present study tested the hypothesis that these areas have different sensitivities to stimulation frequency in the condition of passive stimulation. Functional MRI (fMRI) was recorded in 24 normal volunteers during nonpainful electrical median nerve stimulations at 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 Hz repetition rates in separate recording blocks in pseudorandom order. Results of the blood oxygen level‐dependent (BOLD) effect showed that the contralateral SI, the bilateral SII, and the bilateral insula were active during these stimulations. As a major finding, only the contralateral SI increased its activation with the increase of the stimulus frequency at the mentioned range. The fact that nonpainful median‐nerve electrical stimuli at 4 Hz induces a larger BOLD response is of interest both for basic research and clinical applications in subjects unable to perform cognitive tasks in the fMRI scanner. Ammonia Volatilization from Irrigated and Non-Irrigated Winter Wheat Plots in the North China Plain - Quantification and Modeling

Abstract:China’s growing population led to a drastic intensification of agriculture and livestock production in the last 50 years. Excessive mineral nitrogen (N) fertilizer application and intensive livestock production cause high N losses to the environment. Pathways of N losses may include gaseous N emissions via nitrification/denitrification (N2O, N2), ammonia (NH3) volatilization, nitrate leaching and surface run-off from soils. Ammonia emissions are one of the most important N loss pathways in the North China Plain (NCP) contributing to soil acidification, eutrophication of ecosystems and causing human health problems through combining with particles in the atmosphere which also impair visibility. For developing mitigation measures in a winter wheat cropping system, systematic measurements of NH3 volatilization were conducted in the NCP in Zhengding, 260 km southwest of Beijing. Ammonia emissions were measured with the calibrated Drager-Tube method during the main crop growing season of winter wheat from April to June 2016. The treatments included urea and urea followed by immediate irrigation. Additionally, soil samples were taken from three depth increments (0-30, 30-60 and 60-90 cm) before and after fertilization and the NH3 volatilization was simulated with the HERMES model. The soils showed highest mineral nitrogen (Nmin) contents of up to 340 kg ha-1 (0-90 cm) after fertilization. A decrease in the calcium carbonate content and soil pH in topsoils (0-20 cm) (pH: 6.7) compared to subsoil horizons (pH: 7.7) was attributed to the long-term application of ammonium-based fertilizers as well as to high atmospheric deposition rates of ammonium and sulfuric compounds. Urea applied to winter wheat showed an NH3 loss equal to 22% the of applied N. Application of urea to winter wheat followed by irrigation yielded a reduction of the NH3 volatilization to 0.1% of the applied N. An improved N management based on the soil Nmin content is recommended to improve nitrogen use efficiency and to reduce N losses to the environment. Irrigation after fertilization can be recommended for reduction of NH3 volatilization, provided that other N loss pathways are of minor importance. The NH3 volatilization sub-module of the HERMES model enabled to simulate ammonia volatilization in the NCP satisfactorily. It is suggested to validate the model with further data sets from the NCP or from regions with comparable conditions.

Abstract:Numerous strategies for mitigating ammonia volatilization (AV) from agricultural land have been investigated with limited evaluation of their efficacy and response to differing field conditions across China. Therefore, this meta-analysis seeks to draw conclusions about AV in China, and assess the effect of crop type (wheat, maize, and rice as staple crops), climatic conditions, and soil properties on AV and variations in responses that can guide selection of appropriate strategies under different conditions. Novel analysis indicates nitrogen (NH3–N) losses of 7.62 Tg due to AV from these three crops in China. AV is 12.8 and 18.0% (95% CI) higher from maize than from wheat and rice, respectively, without N application under warm and sub-humid conditions (MM), and 13.8 and 2.8% higher under hot and humid conditions (HH). AV increases notably under HH as compared with cold and sub-arid conditions (LL) by 11.5% and 28.4% under the control treatment and application of 150 kg N ha−1, respectively in rice fields while it is most substantially under maize (52.5%) with application of 150 kg N ha−1. The ratio of change in AV between soil grades 3 and 1 (potential AV >1.0 and < 0 cmol kg−1) is significantly greater for wheat and rice (2.5%) than for maize (1.9%). The strategy of reducing N rate is more effective for maize and rice than wheat, where applying N at a rate of 150–220 kg N ha−1 to them has similar effects to applying 300 kg N ha−1 to wheat. For wheat and maize, urea should be partially substituted with organic amendments, while improved urea is the preferable N source for rice. Subsurface application has competitive efficacy, especially for maize, and higher N rates. Applying inhibitors achieves the highest AV reduction, especially with rice under various conditions, creating more actively options for future research to increase applicability.

Abstract:Ammonia (NH3) volatilization is a major pathway of nitrogen (N) loss in agricultural systems worldwide, and is conducive to low fertilizer N use efficiency, environmental and health issues, and indirect nitrous oxide emission. While mitigating NH3 volatilization is urgently needed, a quantitative synthesis is lacking to evaluate the effectiveness of mitigation strategies for NH3 volatilization from synthetic fertilizers applied in agricultural systems. To fill this knowledge gap, we conducted a meta-analysis of 824 observations on impacts on NH3 volatilization of ⿿4R Nutrient Stewardship⿿ (right source, rate, place and time), farming practices (irrigation, residue retention, amendments), and enhanced efficiency fertilizers (fertilizers with urease inhibitors, nitrification inhibitors or controlled release coatings). We found that, globally, up to 64% (an average of 18%) of applied N was lost as NH3. The use of non-urea based fertilizers, deep placement of fertilizers, irrigation, and mixing with amendments (pyrite, zeolite and organic acids) significantly decreased NH3 volatilization by 75, 55, 35 and 35%, respectively. In contrast, NH3 volatilization was not affected by split application, but significantly increased with N application rate and residue retention. Among the enhanced efficiency fertilizers, urease inhibitors and controlled release fertilizers decreased NH3 volatilization by 54 and 68% respectively whereas nitrification inhibitors increased NH3 volatilization by 38%. These results confirm that NH3 volatilization represents a substantial loss of N from agricultural systems, and that this N loss can be mitigated through adaption of appropriate fertilizer products and/or improved management practices.

Abstract:Although it has long been recognized that significant amounts of nitrogen, typically in the form of ammonia (NH(3)) applied as fertilizer, are lost to the atmosphere, accurate estimates are lacking for many locations. In this study, a detailed, bottom-up method for estimating NH(3) emissions from synthetic fertilizers in China was used. The total amount emitted in 2005 in China was estimated to be 3.55 Tg NH(3)-N, with an uncertainty of ± 50%. This estimate was considerably lower than previously published values. Emissions from urea and ammonium bicarbonate accounted for 64.3% and 26.5%, respectively, of the 2005 total. The NH(3) emission inventory incorporated 2448 county-level data points, categorized on a monthly basis, and was developed with more accurate activity levels and emission factors than had been used in previous assessments. There was considerable variability in the emissions within a province. The NH(3) emissions generally peaked in the spring and summer, accounting for 30.1% and 48.8%, respectively, of total emissions in 2005. The peaks correlated with crop planting and fertilization schedules. The NH(3) regional distribution pattern showed strong correspondence with planting techniques and local arable land areas. The regions with the highest atmospheric losses are located in eastern China, especially the North China Plain and the Taihu region.

Abstract:Ensuring sufficient fertilizer nitrogen (N) for crops while minimizing N losses requires best management practices optimized for climate, crop, soil, and root zone hydrology. In Ontario, pre‐plant N fertilization of corn (Zea mays L.) is common; however, this practice extends the time between application and significant root interception of N by the plant, potentially increasing the risk of N loss through soil nitrous oxide emissions, ammonia (NH3) volatilization, and nitrate leaching. These losses contribute to greenhouse gas emissions, affect air quality (NH3), and are a substantial financial loss. This study compared three N placement methods (broadcast urea [BrUrea], broadcast incorporated urea [BrIncUrea], and injected urea ammonium nitrate [InjUAN]) and the presence or absence of N metabolite inhibitors (urease inhibitor [UI], urease plus nitrification inhibitor [UI+NI]). Fertilizer N was applied immediately before planting (150 kg N ha−1) to all treatments except for the control. Averaged over 3 yr (2015–2017), NH3 losses were reduced by 34% from BrIncUrea, by 42–55% from BrUrea+UI+NI and BrIncUrea+UI+NI, and by 99% from InjUAN relative to BrUrea (21 kg N ha−1). On average, N application increased corn grain yields by 83% relative to the control (6 t ha−1). There were no annual yield differences among N placement methods. It was concluded that incorporation or injection of N in soil and use of urease and nitrification inhibitors reduced NH3 emissions when N fertilizer was applied pre‐plant.

Abstract:Ammonia volatilization (AV) dominates the pathway of nitrogen (N) fertilizer losses in crops throughout the world. However, different methods are highly responsible for the different measurements of AV. The existing techniques were separated into static chamber methods (SCM), dynamic chamber methods (DCM), calibrated Dräger-tube method (DTM) and micrometeorological methods (MMM), which were analyzed by a meta-study of 595 observations from 33 published studies. An exponential relationship (P < 0.01) was found between AV and the N fertilizer applied to wheat and maize using all the methods. The amount of AV using SCM was the lowest. The AV monitored by DCM was 24.5%-55.0% (wheat) and 46.9%-65.0% (maize) lower than that for the DTM. Additionally, the AV measured by DTM did not differ significantly in the wheat season but was 58.9% lower (P < 0.05) in the maize season than that in the MMM. To reveal the influencing factors responsible that were for DCM and DTM, a field experiment was conducted during the period of Oct. 2016 to Oct. 2017. The study indicated that the AV was 15.8%-28.3% (wheat, P < 0.05) and 36.7%-44.2% (maize, P < 0.05) lower when monitored by the DCM than when estimated by DTM. The concentration of soil NH4+-N, air temperature, and wind speed positively correlated with the NH3 fluxes. In addition, there was a significant linear correlation (P < 0.01) between the AV measured by DCM and DTM when the wind speed was <1.5 m s-1. This study highlighted the fact that wind speed was the main factor that caused the large difference between DCM and DTM. Herein, DTM or MMM was first recommended, and DCM was accepted when wind speed was <1.5 m s-1 for quantitative estimates of AV. However, only a straight comparison between DCM and DTM under the same field experiment was done, the other comparisons only being based on similar fertilization and environmental conditions. Consequently, the differences between methods have to be treated carefully.

Abstract:The losses of excessive reactive nitrogen (N) from agricultural production pose detrimental impacts on water, air and land. However, N budgets of agroecosystems are still poorly quantified, presenting a barrier to understand the N turnover in agriculture. Agricultural ammonia (NH3) volatilization has been recognized as a crucial contribution to the pollution of fine particulate matters over China through reacting with acid gases. Building on these challenges, the first national-scale model analysis was constructed on the N budgets to gain an overall insight into the current status of N flows in Chinese dryland systems towards sustainable N management. Total inputs of soil N in Chinese dryland soils were estimated at 121 kg N ha−1 in 2010, considering all pathways including N manure, fertilizer, atmospheric deposition and litter from crop residues. Atmospheric N deposition accounted for 25% of N fertilizer plus N manure in Chinese dryland soils, suggesting that N deposition could not be ignored when estimating total N inputs to Chinese dryland soils. The highest ratio of NH3 volatilization to total N outputs was found at 43 kg N ha−1 (∼21%) in Northern China, followed by 41 kg N ha−1 (∼20%) in Sichuan Basin and 25 kg N ha−1 (∼26%) in Northeastern China. The modeling results indicated that, if a 20% decrease in N fertilizer plus N manure was achieved, it would lead to a 24% (7–49%) reduction in NH3 volatilization. Substantial reductions of NH3 volatilization would also be achieved by making an improvement in changing management practices (controlled release fertilizer and full irrigation). The results would give an overall insight into N budgets in Chinese dryland soils. The constructed N budgets assisted with understanding agricultural N flows and NH3 pollution, and evaluated the impacts of human activities on N cycle towards a precise way to regulate agricultural management.

Herbicide Applications Reduce Gaseous N Losses: A Field Study of Three Consecutive Wheat–Maize Rotation Cycles in the North China Plain

Abstract:Herbicide residues in farmland soils have attracted a great deal of attention in recent decades. Their accumulation potentially decreases the activity of microbes and related enzymes, as well as disturbs the nitrogen cycle in farmland soils. In previous studies, the influence of natural factors or nitrogen fertilization on the soil nitrogen cycle have frequently been examined, but the role of herbicides has been ignored. This study was conducted to examine the effects of herbicides on NH3 volatilization- and denitrification-related nitrogen loss through three rotation cycles from 2013 to 2016. The four treatments included no urea fertilizer (CK), urea (CN), urea+acetochlor-fenoxaprop-ethyl (AC-FE), and urea+2,4D-dicamba (2,4D-DI) approaches. The results showed that the application of nitrogen fertilizer significantly increased the nitrogen losses from ammonia volatilization and denitrification in the soil. Ammonia volatilization was the main reason for the gaseous loss of urea nitrogen in a wheat–maize rotation system in the North China Plain (NCP), which was significantly higher than the denitrification loss. In the CK treatment, the cumulative nitrogen losses from ammonia volatilization and denitrification during the three crop rotation cycles were 66.64 kg N hm−2 and 8.07 kg N hm−2, respectively. Compared with CK, the nitrogen losses from ammonia volatilization and denitrification under the CN treatment increased 52.62% and 152.88%, respectively. The application of AC-FE and 2,4D-DI significantly reduced the nitrogen gas losses from the ammonia volatilization and denitrification in the soil. Ammonia volatilization reduction mainly occurred during the maize season, and the inhibition rates of AC-FE and 2,4D-DI were 7.72% and 11.80%, respectively, when compared with CN. From the perspective of the entire wheat–maize rotation cycle, the inhibition rates were 5.41% and 7.23% over three years, respectively. Denitrification reduction also mainly occurred in the maize season, with the inhibition rates of AC-FE and 2,4D-DI being 34.12% and 30.94%, respectively, when compared with CN. From the perspective of the entire wheat–maize rotation cycle, the inhibition rates were 28.39% and 28.58% over three years, respectively. Overall, this study demonstrates that herbicides could impact the nitrogen cycle of farmland soil ecosystems via the suppression of ammonia volatilization and denitrification rates, thus reducing gaseous N losses and mitigating global climate change.

Individual and Neighborhood Characteristics of Children Seeking Emergency Department Care for Firearm Injuries Within the PECARN Network

Abstract:OBJECTIVE The objective was to describe the characteristics of children seeking emergency care for firearm injuries within the PECARN network and assess the influence of both individual and neighborhood factors on firearm-related injury risk. METHODS This was a retrospective, multicenter cross-sectional analysis of children (<19 years old) presenting to 16 pediatric EDs (2004-2008). ICD-9-CM E-codes were used to identify and categorize firearm injuries by mechanism/intent. Neighborhood variables were derived from home address data. Multivariable analysis examined the influence of individual and neighborhood factors on firearm-related injuries compared to nonfirearm ED visits. Injury recidivism was assessed. RESULTS A total of 1,758 pediatric ED visits for firearm-related injuries were analyzed. Assault (51.4%, n = 904) and unintentional injury (33.2%, n = 584) were the most common injury mechanisms. Among children with firearm injuries, 68.3% were older adolescents (15-19 years old), 82.3% were male, 68.2% were African American, and 76.3% received public insurance/were uninsured. Extremity injuries were most common (75.9%), with 20% sustaining injuries to multiple body regions, 48.1% requiring admission and 1% ED mortality. Multivariable analysis identified firearm injury risk factors, including adolescent age (p < 0.001), male sex (p < 0.001), non-Caucasian race/ethnicity (p < 0.001), public payer/uninsured status (p < 0.001), and higher levels of neighborhood disadvantage (p < 0.001). Among children with firearm injuries, 12-month ED recidivism for any reason was 22.4%, with < 1% returning for another firearm injury. CONCLUSION Among children receiving ED treatment within the PECARN network, there are distinct demographic and neighborhood factors associated with firearm injuries. Among younger children (<10 years old), unintentional injuries predominate, while assault-type injuries were most common among older adolescents. Overall, among this PECARN patient population, male adolescents living in neighborhoods characterized by high levels of concentrated disadvantage had an elevated risk for firearm injury. Public health efforts should focus on developing and implementing initiatives addressing risk factors at both the individual and the community level, including ED-based interventions to reduce the risk for firearm injuries among high-risk pediatric populations.

Abstract:This long-term study used a lysimeter platform to monitor the NH3 and N2O emissions of summer maize resulting from various fertilization treatments in the Huanghuaihai area, with the goal to assess the efficiency of fertilization measures aimed at reducing NH3 and N2O losses during the production of summer maize; the results provide a theoretical basis for synergistically improving maize yield and fertilizer utilization efficiency. A 2-year field trial was conducted. The trial included a no-N-fertilizer treatment as a control to study the following three fertilizer treatments: the exclusive application of urea, the exclusive application of cattle manure, and the combined application of organic and inorganic fertilizers. The results show that during the two maize growth seasons included in the trial, the average N2O losses associated with exclusively applying urea, exclusively applying cattle manure, and the combined application of organic and inorganic fertilizers were 273%, 542%, and 376% higher than those associated with the control treatment, respectively. During the same period, the average accumulative ammonia volatilization losses were 311%, 542% and 376% higher than those for the control treatment, respectively. The average nitrogen accumulation resulting from the combined application of organic and inorganic fertilizers was 82% higher than that for the control treatment, 12% higher than that for the exclusive application of cattle manure, and 6% higher than that for the exclusive application of urea. The average grain yield for the combined application of organic and inorganic fertilizers, the exclusive application of urea and the exclusive application of cattle manure were 76%, 68% and 61% higher than that for the control treatment, respectively. Overall, the combined application of organic and inorganic fertilizers showed a lower ammonia volatilization loss than the exclusive application of urea, which resulted in a higher ammonium nitrogen and nitrate nitrogen content in the soil, an increased nitrogen uptake, an increased dry matter accumulation of maize, and a high grain yield and nitrogen recovery efficiency.

Abstract:A venting method was adopted to determine the effect of nitrogen topdressing stages on ammonia volatilization(AV) from topdressing fertilization in irrigated and rainfed wheat fields.The results show that under rainfed conditions,the AV from topdressing fertilization in wheat fields is mainly in the period from 5 to 25 days after the fertilization.With the delay of nitrogen topdressing stage from the pseudo stem erection stage(SE,GS30) to the jointing stage(JT,GS32),the peak value of the AV rate is increased and the occurrence time of the peak is ahead.With the delay of nitrogen topdressing stage to the booting(BT,GS41),the peak value of the AV rate is reduced.The rates of AV loss are 24.84%-25.32%,25.42%-25.50% and 14.77%-16.62% in the SE,JT and BT treatments,respectively.Under 60 mm irrigation amount,the nitrogen fertilization stage has less effect on the AV,the AV rates from the topdressing fertilization are not changed significantly,and the N loss from the accumulated AV is N 0.40 to 0.55 kg/ha,only accounting for 0.36% to 0.49% of topdressing N.Under the rainfed conditions,there is a significant positive correlation between 0-10 cm layer soil NH+4-N concentration and the AV rate,and under irrigated conditions there is a significant positive correlation between 10-20 cm layer soil NH+4-N concentration and the AV rate.Soil temperature and rainfall are the important influence factors of AV.In addition,AV is connected with aeration status of field soil surface.Multiple spike type wheat is helpful to reduce wheat field AV loss.
Optimized nitrogen rate, plant density, and irrigation level reduced ammonia emission and nitrate leaching on maize farmland in the oasis area of China

Abstract:Nitrogen fertilizers play a key role in crop production to meet global food demand. Inappropriate application of nitrogen fertilizer coupled with poor irrigation and other crop management practices threaten agriculture and environmental sustainability. Over application of nitrogen fertilizer increases nitrogen gas emission and nitrate leaching. A field experiment was conducted in China’s oasis irrigation area in 2018 and 2019 to determine which nitrogen rate, plant density, and irrigation level in sole maize ( Zea mays L.) cropping system reduce ammonia emission and nitrate leaching. Three nitrogen rates of urea (46-0-0 of N-P 2 O 5 -K 2 O), at (N 0 = 0 kg N ha −1 , N 1 = 270 kg N ha −1 , and N 2 = 360 kg N ha −1 ) were combined with three plant densities (D 1 = 75,000 plants/ha −1 , D 2 = 97,500 plants/ha −1 , and D 3 = 120,000 plants/ha −1 ) with two irrigation levels (W 1 = 5,250 m 3 /hm 2 and W 2 = 4,740 m 3 /hm 2 ) using a randomized complete block design. The results showed that, both the main and interaction effects of nitrogen rate, plant density, and irrigation level reduced nitrate leaching ( p < 0.05). In addition, irrigation level × nitrogen rate significantly ( p < 0.05) reduced ammonia emission. Nitrate leaching and ammonia emission decreased with higher irrigation level and higher plant density. However, high nitrogen rates increased both nitrate leaching and ammonia emission. The study found lowest leaching (0.35 mg kg −1 ) occurring at the interaction of 270 kg N ha −1 × 120,000 plants/ha −1 × 4,740 m 3 /hm 2 , and higher plant density of 120,000 plants/ha −1 combined with 0 kg N ha −1 and irrigation level of 5,250 m 3 /hm 2 recorded the lowest ammonia emission (0.001 kg N) −1 . Overall, ammonia emission increased as days after planting increased while nitrate leaching decreased in deeper soil depths. These findings show that, though the contributory roles of days after planting, soil depth, amount of nitrogen fertilizer applied and year of cultivation cannot be undermined, it is possible to reduce nitrate leaching and ammonia emission through optimized nitrogen rate, plant density and regulated irrigation for agricultural and environmental sustainability.

Abstract:This study investigates the impact of corn straw return and nitrogen application rates on ammonia volatilization and yield enhancement under field conditions, in order to reduce emissions while increasing crop yield. During the winter wheat season, a fissure area design was implemented, comprising three levels of straw return in the main area and three distinct nitrogen fertilizer levels in the subsidiary area, for a total of nine treatments. The results can be summarized as follows: (1) The ammonia emissions flux initially increased followed by a decrease, and was primarily concentrated within the first 14 days after fertilization, with a peak observed at 4–5 days before decreasing. Notably, nitrogen fertilizer significantly affected the cumulative ammonia emissions, ranging from 0.019 to 1.786 kg·hm−2·d−1 and 0.013 to 1.693 kg·hm−2·d−1 across the two seasons. (2) The soil with a higher nitrogen application rate exhibited elevated levels of inorganic nitrogen content and urease activity under the same straw return level. Maintaining a consistent nitrogen application level, the return of straw to the field increased the cumulative ammonia discharge, inorganic nitrogen content, and urease activity. (3) The interaction between straw return and nitrogen fertilizer substantially affected crop yield. Specifically, during the winter wheat season, the optimal combination for reducing ammonia emissions and enhancing yield was observed under straw return (both half or full) combined with 180 kg·hm−2 nitrogen application. Notably, the reduction of soil emissions and winter wheat yield augmentation were feasible through appropriate corn straw return in the preceding season.
