Abstract:Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS)-based organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) are widely utilized to construct highly sensitive biosensors. However, the PSS phase exhibits insulation, weak acidity, and aqueous instability. In this work, we fabricated PEDOT OECT by alternating current electrodeposition in protic ionic liquids. The steady-state characteristics were demonstrated to be stable in long-term tests. In detail, the maximum transconductance, the on/off current ratio, and the hysteresis were stable at 2.79 mS, 504, and 0.12 V, respectively. Though the transient behavior was also stable, the time constant could reach 218.6 ms. Thus, the trade-off between switching speed and stability needs to be considered in applications that require a rapid response.
Breathable and Stretchable Organic Electrochemical Transistors with Laminated Porous Structures for Glucose Sensing

Abstract:Dynamic glucose monitoring is important to reduce the risk of metabolic diseases such as diabetes. Wearable biosensors based on organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) have been developed due to their excellent signal amplification capabilities and biocompatibility. However, traditional wearable biosensors are fabricated on flat substrates with limited gas permeability, resulting in the inefficient evaporation of sweat, reduced wear comfort, and increased risk of inflammation. Here, we proposed breathable OECT-based glucose sensors by designing a porous structure to realize optimal breathable and stretchable properties. The gas permeability of the device and the relationship between electrical properties under different tensile strains were carefully investigated. The OECTs exhibit exceptional electrical properties (gm ~1.51 mS and Ion ~0.37 mA) and can retain up to about 44% of their initial performance even at 30% stretching. Furthermore, obvious responses to glucose have been demonstrated in a wide range of concentrations (10-7-10-4 M) even under 30% strain, where the normalized response to 10-4 M is 26% and 21% for the pristine sensor and under 30% strain, respectively. This work offers a new strategy for developing advanced breathable and wearable bioelectronics.
A sub-1V, microwatt power-consumption iontronic pressure sensor based on organic electrochemical transistors

Abstract:Wearable and implantable pressure sensors are in great demand for personalized health monitoring. Pressure sensors with low operation voltage and low power-consumption are desired for energy-saving devices. Organic iontronic devices, such as organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs), have demonstrated great potential for low power-consumption bioelectronic sensing applications. The ability to conduct both electrons and ions, in addition to their low-operation voltage has enabled the widespread use of OECTs in different biosensing fields. However, despite these merits, OECTs have not been demonstrated for pressure sensing applications. This is because most OECTs are gated with aqueous electrolyte, which fails to respond to external pressure. Here, a low power-consumption iontronic pressure sensor is presented based on an OECT, in which an ionic hydrogel is used as a solid gating medium. The resultant iontronic device operated at voltages less than 1 V, with a power-consumption between ~ 101-103 μW, while maintaining a tunable sensitivity between 1 ~ 10 kPa-1. This work places OECTs on the frontline for developing low power-consumption iontronic pressure sensors and for biosensing applications.

Abstract:A flexible and biocompatible solid‐state organic electrochemical transistor with an extended sensing node for detecting multiple ions within the physiological range under an artificial sweat environment is presented. Such solid‐state device architecture facilitates the ease of sample handling, processability and device miniaturization. Wearable bioelectronic sensors have gained tremendous prominence and applicability in healthcare technologies as they offer an alternative to traditional clinical testing and health monitoring. However, many challenges must be overcome for off‐site and point‐of‐care commercial applications, including sensitivity, selectivity, multiple analyte detection, sample procurement technique, invasiveness, biocompatibility, and accurate real‐time sensing. Specifically, a wearable sweat‐based diagnostic biosensing platform offers a noninvasive way for rapid and real‐time monitoring of various physiological biomarkers. This work develops a flexible solid‐state organic electrochemical transistor with an extended sensing node for multi‐ions sensing in the physiological range with high selectivity, fast response, and superior sensitivity. The solid‐contact architecture is implemented for easy sample handling, processability, device miniaturization, and flexibility. For the first time, multiplexed ions (sodium (Na+), potassium (K+), and calcium (Ca2+)) sensing with the integration of ion‐selective membranes and biocompatible semiconducting channel in an extended gate‐solid‐state organic electrochemical transistor (ExG‐SSOECT) is presented. The integrated ExG‐SSOECT device platform exhibits improved performance among the available wearable sensors and offers great potential to be a suitable biochemical sensor in wearable bioelectronics.

Metabolism and binding to cellular macromolecules of a series of hydrocarbons by mouse embryo cells in culture

Abstract:A series of eight tritium‐labelled polycyclic hydrocarbons were incubated in the presence of monolayer cultures of primary mouse embryo cells, and the time‐course of their metabolism to water‐soluble derivatives was studied. All the hydrocarbons, both carcinogenic and non‐carcinogenic, were metabolized at approximately the same rate when a low concentration of the order of 0.05 μM was used. The binding of the various hydrocarbons to cellular DNA, RNA and protein was determined and a “binding index” calculated, i.e., the extent of reaction of the hydrocarbon with the particular macromolecule resulting from the metabolism of 1 mμmole of hydrocarbon per ml of medium to which the cells were exposed. While no very significant difference between the various hydrocarbons was found for the protein binding index, the DNA and RNA binding indices divided the compounds into two groups. One group with a high binding index consisted of potent carcinogens while the other group had much lower (one tenth) values for the binding index. With the exception of dibenz[a, h]anthracene, this latter group consisted of non‐carcinogens.

Abstract:Ionic‐electronic coupling across the entire volume of conjugated polymer films endows organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) with high transconductance (gm) and low operating voltage. However, OECTs utilize liquid electrolytes, which limit their long‐term operation, reproducibility, and integration while solid electrolytes typically result in inefficient ion transport. Here, a solid polymer electrolyte is shown that can facilitate good electrochemical response in conjugated polymers and yield high OECT performance. This allows for the OECT‐based pressure sensors, modulated through a pressure sensitive ionic doping process. The pressure sensor exhibits the highest sensitivity ever measured (≈10 000 kPa−1) and excellent stability. Flexible sensor arrays achieve static capture of spatial pressure distribution and enable monitoring of dynamic pressure stimuli. The findings here demonstrate that all‐solid‐state OECTs are good candidates for providing rich tactile information, enabling applications for soft robotics, health monitoring, and human‐machine interfaces.

Printable transistors for wearable sweat sensing

Abstract:Human performance monitoring (HPM) devices for sweat sensing in both civilian and military uses necessitate chemical sensors with low limits of detection, rapid read out times, and ultra-low volumes. Electronic and electrochemical sensing mechanisms for biomarker identification and quantification are attractive for overall ease of use, including robust, portable, fast readout, and simple operation. Transistors have the high signal gain required to sense low concentrations (μM to pM) at low volumes (μL to nL) in real-time (<1 minute), metrics not achievable by benchtop analytical techniques. Two main challenges currently prohibit the realization of transistor-based biosensors: i) the need for printed devices for low-cost, disposable sensors; and ii) the need to overcome diminished sensitivity in high ionic strength solutions. In this proof-of-concept work, we demonstrate organic electrochemical transistors (OECT) as a promising low cost, printable device platform for electrochemical detection of biomarkers in high ionic strength environments. This work focuses on how the materials choice and functionality impacts the electrochemical and sensor and transducer performance and determining the feasibility of reducing the size of the sensor to nanoliter volume detection. Initial studies target dopamine. Detection limits for simple electrochemical approaches using platinum or glassy carbon electrodes remain relatively high (~ 1-10 ng/mL or 50 nM). Using an OECT, we demonstrate an initial detection level of dopamine at ~ 10 pg/mL achieved without any selective binding modifications to the gate electrode at gate voltages below 1 V.
Aqueous electrolyte-gated solution-processed metal oxide transistors for direct cellular interfaces

Abstract:Biocompatible field-effect-transistor-based biosensors have drawn attention for the development of next-generation human-friendly electronics. High-performance electronic devices must achieve low-voltage operation, long-term operational stability, and biocompatibility. Herein, we propose an electrolyte-gated thin-film transistor made of large-area solution-processed indium-gallium-zinc oxide (IGZO) semiconductors capable of directly interacting with live cells at physiological conditions. The fabricated transistors exhibit good electrical performance operating under sub-0.5 V conditions with high on-/off-current ratios (>107) and transconductance (>1.0 mS) over an extended operational lifetime. Furthermore, we verified the biocompatibility of the IGZO surface to various types of mammalian cells in terms of cell viability, proliferation, morphology, and drug responsiveness. Finally, the prolonged stable operation of electrolyte-gated transistor devices directly integrated with live cells provides the proof-of-concept for solution-processed metal oxide material-based direct cellular interfaces.

Abstract:Bioelectronic devices must be fast and sensitive to interact with the rapid, low-amplitude signals generated by neural tissue. They should also be biocompatible and soft, and should exhibit long-term stability in physiologic environments. Here, we develop an enhancement-mode, internal ion-gated organic electrochemical transistor (e-IGT) based on a reversible redox reaction and hydrated ion reservoirs within the conducting polymer channel, which enable long-term stable operation and shortened ion transit time. E-IGT transient responses depend on hole rather than ion mobility, and combine with high transconductance to result in a gain–bandwidth product that is several orders of magnitude above that of other ion-based transistors. We used these transistors to acquire a wide range of electrophysiological signals, including in vivo recording of neural action potentials, and to create soft, biocompatible, long-term implantable neural processing units for the real-time detection of epileptic discharges. E-IGTs offer a safe, reliable and high-performance building block for chronically implanted bioelectronics, with a spatiotemporal resolution at the scale of individual neurons.

Abstract:Organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) are promising for highly sensitive chemical and biological detections, because of the signal amplification, low operating voltage, solution compatibility, and high biocompatibility. However, OECTs, particularly the semiconductor layer, still need to be optimized for improving the output performances. Herein, by introducing Nafion, a proton penetrable polymer, into typical semiconductor layers of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrenesulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) and poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT), we realize a significant enhancement (up to 10-fold and 4-fold respectively) in transconductance of OECTs. The enhancements are attributed to the introducing of Nafion domains in semiconductor channel, which increases the surface area of semiconductor channel and promotes the ion doping/de-doping of the channel. In addition, the Nafion-included OECTs exhibit a fast response time of 20 millisecond. Due to the improved transconductance and response time, the obtained OECT demonstrates sensitive detections of pH value and glucose. This work provides a simple and effective method for improving the performance of OECTs, which will be promising in sensitive and reliable detection of metabolites.

Abstract:Organic bioelectronics has the potential to unlock the utmost innovation in medicine and healthcare through the combination of biological and digital realms. Particularly, organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) are a promising class of bioelectronics transducer. Nevertheless, a fabrication strategy is needed to lower the access barrier to the OECTs, thereby expediting product development and innovation. In this work, we present a supramolecular approach with simple equipment to prepare conductive films based on poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate), PEDOT:PSS, integrated with cationic molecular blocks for OECTs manufacturing. By employing the layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly technique, we facilely prepared transistor channels of PEDOT:PSS integrated with either the surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, CTAB, or the polyelectrolyte poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride), PDADMAC, with nanometric precision. Both cationic blocks feature positively charged quaternary amines but possess different mesogenic and surfactant features. The PEDOT:PSS/CTAB system yields an electrical conductivity of 275 S m–1, which is 4 orders of magnitude higher than those integrated with PDADMAC (0.0531 S m–1). This enhancement is attributed to CTAB integration, which boosts the PEDOT:PSS charge transport, while PDADMAC diminishes it. The electronic performance indicators of OECTs (current at the on-state, I max, threshold potential, V TH, transconductance, g m) are easily tuned by adjusting the thickness of the transistor channel film. The cycling stability of the transistor channel is 8-fold enhanced by coating it with a protective layer using nonelectroactive polymers. These OECTs exhibit a g m of 2.21 mS, a μC* product (μ is the hole mobility, and C* is the capacitance per unit of volume) of 0.23 F cm–1 V–1 s–1, and on- and off-switching times, τ, of 24.2 and 12.3 ms, respectively. Their performance was comparable to or better than OECTs with channels prepared using techniques based on equipment of higher complexity and cost. Finally, we demonstrate the utility of these facilely prepared OECTs in biosensing the neurotransmitter dopamine with an exceptional sensitivity of 279 mV/decade and good operation range (1–300 μM) and reversibility.

Ion Exchange Gels Allow Organic Electrochemical Transistor Operation with Hydrophobic Polymers in Aqueous Solution

Abstract:Conjugated-polymer-based organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) are being studied for applications ranging from biochemical sensing to neural interfaces. While new polymers that interface digital electronics with the aqueous chemistry of life are being developed, the majority of high-performance organic transistor materials are poor at transporting biologically relevant ions. Here, the operating mode of an organic transistor is changed from that of an electrolyte-gated organic field-effect transistor (EGOFET) to that of an OECT by incorporating an ion exchange gel between the active layer and the aqueous electrolyte. This device works by taking up biologically relevant ions from solution and injecting more hydrophobic ions into the active layer. Using poly[2,5-bis(3-tetradecylthiophen-2-yl) thieno[3,2-b]thiophene] as the active layer and a blend of an ionic liquid, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, and poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) as the ion exchange gel, four orders of magnitude improvement in device transconductance and a 100-fold increase in kinetics are demonstrated. The ability of the ion-exchange-gel OECT to record biological signals by measuring the action potentials of a Venus flytrap is demonstrated. These results show the possibility of using interface engineering to open up a wider palette of organic semiconductors as OECTs that can be gated by aqueous solutions.
Dual-liquid-gated electrochemical transistor and its neuromorphic behaviors

Abstract:Organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) are attracting great interest in the field of bioelectronics due to their low operating voltage, flexibility, and biocompatibility. Tunability of the static and transient characteristics renders OECTs with flexible electrical responses and versatile functionalities. However, existing tuning methods are known by changing the structure or composition of OECTs, which are empirical due to the lack of accurate structure-function relationships. Here, we report a post-fabrication and facile tuning method by using a dual-liquid-gate configuration. Based on this, critical parameters of OECT, e.g., threshold voltage (VTH), gate bias for the peak transconductance (VG(g*m)), electric hysteresis (Vhys), minimum of the subthreshold swing (SS*), and response time (τ), can be readily tuned over a range of 0.52 V, 0.48 V, 0.20 V, 0.38 V/decade and 7.2 ms, respectively. We have also developed corresponding mathematical analyses based on the dual-liquid-gating process. Detailed studies on the transient electrical properties demonstrate that auxiliary-gate biases influence the electrochemical doping/de-doping state of the semiconducting channel during the main-gate bias sweeping. Furthermore, typical neuromorphic behaviors of paired-pulse depression and decay time were successfully controlled by varying the auxiliary-gate bias. The proposed dual-liquid-gating is ready for precise engineering on OECT, which is beneficial as an effective tool for conducting an in-depth theoretical study on OECT, constructing multifunctional sensors, and developing more plasticizable neuromorphic devices.

Abstract:The charged species inside biofluids (blood, interstitial fluid, sweat, saliva, urine, etc.) can reflect the human body's physiological conditions and thus be adopted to diagnose various diseases early. Among all personalized health management applications, ion-selective organic electrochemical transistors (IS-OECTs) have shown tremendous potential in point-of-care testing of biofluids due to low cost, ease of fabrication, high signal amplification, and low detection limit. Moreover, IS-OECTs exhibit excellent flexibility and biocompatibility that enable their application in wearable bioelectronics for continuous health monitoring. In this review, the working principle of IS-OECTs and the recent studies of IS-OECTs for performance improvement are reviewed. Specifically, contemporary studies on material design and device optimization to enhance the sensitivity of IS-OECTs are discussed. In addition, the progress toward the commercialization of IS-OECTs is highlighted, and the recently proposed solutions or alternatives are summarized. The main challenges and perspectives for fully exploiting IS-OECTs toward future preventive and personal medical devices are addressed.

Abstract:Interest in organic electronic materials, and in particular their potential for low-cost fabrication over large areas, led to the development of organic field-effect transistors (OFETs). The potential of OFETs has been demonstrated in a variety of applications, including pixel drivers for displays, bionic skin, wearable electronics and sensitive chemical sensors that can operate in aqueous environments. OFETs use conjugated, semiconducting small molecules and polymers and offer an alternative to inorganic devices for applications in which facile processing on different substrates and tunable electronic properties are required. The flexibility requirement implies either performance stability towards deformation, or conversely, detectable response to the deformation itself. The knowledge of the electromechanical response of organic semiconductors to external stresses is therefore not only interesting from a fundamental point of view, but also necessary for the development of real world applications. To this end, this presentation highlights the importance of the choice of functional materials (organic semiconductors and dielectrics) as well as the relationship structure/properties in transistors based sensors. Organic semiconductors (OSCs) are promising transducer materials when applied in OFETs taking advantage of their electrical properties that highly depend on the morphology of the semiconducting film. The effects of a high-performance p-type organic semiconductor, namely dinaphtho [2,3-b:2,3-f] thieno [3,2–b] thiophene (DNTT) thickness on its piezoresistive sensitivity are presented. A critical thickness corresponding to the appearance of charge carriers percolation paths in the material can tune the gauge factors (GFs) by a factor 10. In addition, single crystal OSC are regarded as promising electroactive materials for strain sensing application. Herein this talk, we will present how strain induces simultaneous mobility changes along all three axes, and that in some cases the response is higher along directions orthogonal to the mechanical deformation. These variations cannot be explained by the modulation of intermolecular distances, but only by a more complex molecular reorganisation, which is particularly enhanced, in terms of response, by p-stacking and herringbone stacking. This microscopic knowledge of the relation between structural and mobility variations is essential for the interpretation of electromechanical measurements for crystalline organic semiconductors, and for the rational design of electronic devices. Alternatively, this talk will highlight how the use of an active gate dielectric layer such as poly(vinylidenefluoride/trifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE)) piezoelectric polymer can lead to highly efficient electro-mechanical sensitivity. In such case, the sensing mechanism of the electro-mechanical transducer originates from the piezoelectric material itself, which affects the electrical behavior of the transistor as signature of a mechanical event. The second part of this talk will focus on another kind of TFT based sensor, namely the organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) which have found recently applications in chemical and biological sensing and interfacing and neuromorphic computing. OECT rely on ions that are injected from the electrolyte into polymer-based mixed conductors, thereby changing its doping state and hence its conductivity. While great progress has been achieved, organic mixed conductors frequently experience significant volumetric changes during ion uptake/rejection, i.e., during doping/ de-doping and charging/discharging. Although ion dynamics may be enhanced in expanded networks, these volumetric changes can have undesirable consequences, e.g., negatively affecting hole/electron conduction and severely shortening device lifetime. New materials able to transport ions and electrons/holes and that exhibits low swelling will be presented, expanding the materials-design toolbox for the creation of low-swelling soft mixed conductors with tailored properties and applications in bioelectronics and beyond.
A paper-based organic electrochemical transistor array with a simplified configuration for simultaneous multi-ion detection

Abstract:In recent years, organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) have emerged as a promising tool to add to current analytical methods due to their high-amplification capacities, robust analytical performance, and versatility. The present work proposes a compact multi-analyte transistor array with outstanding analytical performance. The ion-selective organic electrochemical transistors (IS-OECTs) were developed by combining the thick-film technology with the optimum ion-selective membrane, resulting in highly sensitive and selective IS-OECTs. The system has then been simplified using only a power supply for each OECT and a single gate electrode. To prove these advantages, the IS-OECT array of sensors has been combined with multivariate models to simultaneously detect and quantify sodium, potassium and ammonium ions in human saliva. The results obtained have been validated against reference techniques, showing promising results and confirming the usefulness of the newly developed sensing array.
Ion exchange gels enhance organic electrochemical transistor performance in aqueous solution

Abstract:Conjugated polymer-based organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) are being studied for applications ranging from biochemical sensing to neural interfaces. While new conjugated polymers are being developed that can interface digital electronics with the aqueous chemistry of life, the vast majority of high-performance, high-mobility organic transistor materials developed over the past decades are extremely poor at taking up biologically-relevant ions. Here we incorporate an ion exchange gel into an OECT, demonstrating that this structure is capable of taking up biologically-relevant ions from solution and injecting larger, more hydrophobic ions into the underlying polymer semiconductor active layer in multiple hydrophobic conjugated polymers. Using poly[2,5-bis(3-tetradecylthiophen-2-yl) thieno[3,2-b]thiophene] (PBTTT) as a model semiconductor active layer and a blend of the ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (BMIM TFSI) and poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) as the ion exchange gel, we demonstrate more than a four order of magnitude improvement in OECT device transconductance and a one hundred-fold increase in ion injection kinetics. We demonstrate the ability of the ion exchange gel OECT to record biological signals by measuring the action potentials of a Venus flytrap plant. These results show the possibility of using interface engineering to open up a wider palette of organic semiconductor materials as OECTs that can be gated by aqueous solutions.
Nanoporous Conjugated Polymer Aerogel Films for High‐Performance Electrochemical Transistors

Abstract:High‐performance flexible electrochemical transistors based on nanoporous conjugated polymer aerogels are developed by synergistic assembly and crosslinking of conjugated polymer, cellulose nanofiber, and polyorganosiloxane. They show enhanced ion penetration/transport and transconductance and can be used for highly sensitive glucose sensors with an ultralow detection limit, electrophysiological signal monitoring, and high‐performance artificial synapses. Organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) possess low operating voltage and excellent amplification capability and show promising applications in biosensors and flexible electronics. However, the active layers of OECTs are usually dense films, which show limited ion penetration/transport, resulting in limited performances of OECTs. Here, unprecedented high‐performance flexible multifunctional OECTs based on nanoporous (mainly 2–60 nm), high‐specific‐surface‐area (255–281 m2 g−1), and flexible conjugated polymer aerogel films are developed. The nanoporous structures effectively facilitate ion penetration/transport, leading to significantly enhanced transconductance (48.5–53.5 mS) and on/off ratio (6.4 × 104) of the OECTs compared with those of dense devices. The resulting OECT‐based glucose sensors exhibit an ultralow detection limit of 1 pm, approximately two to three orders of magnitude lower than those of the previously reported OECT glucose sensors, and an ultrabroad detection range of 1 pm–5 m. They can detect trace amounts of glucose in sweat, serum, saliva, and urine in real time. Moreover, the OECTs can be used for high‐performance flexible artificial synapses and electrocardiogram monitoring. This work provides a powerful strategy toward highly sensitive biosensors, artificial synapses, and electrophysiological signal monitoring.

Abstract:A novel and biocompatible, highly stretchable, flexible, self‐healable gelatin‐based solid‐state electrolyte for bioelectronic applications is introduced. This nonvolatile electrolyte demonstrates compatibility with a wide range of both p‐ and n‐type channels for organic electrochemical transistors while maintaining high performance and excellent stability. They are further used in circuits and for sensing physiological signals. The development of soft and flexible devices for collection of bioelectrical signals is gaining momentum for wearable and implantable applications. Among these devices, organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) stand out due to their low operating voltage and large signal amplification capable of transducing weak biological signals. While liquid electrolytes have demonstrated efficacy in OECTs, they limit its operating temperature and pose challenges for electronic packaging due to potential leakage. Conversely, solid electrolytes offer advantages such as mechanical flexibility, robustness against environmental factors, and ability to bridge the interface between rigid dry electronics systems and soft wet biological tissues. However, few systems have demonstrated generality and compatibility with a wide range of state‐of‐the‐art organic mixed ionic‐electronic conductors (OMIECs). This paper introduces a highly stretchable, flexible, biocompatible, self‐healable gelatin‐based solid‐state electrolyte, compatible with both p‐ and n‐type OMIEC channels while maintaining high performance and excellent stability. Furthermore, this nonvolatile electrolyte is stable up to 120 °C and exhibits high ionic conductivity even in dry environment. Additionally, an OECT‐based complementary inverter with a record‐high normalized‐gain of 228 V−1 and a corresponding ultralow static power consumption of 1 nW is demonstrated. These advancements pave the way for versatile applications ranging from bioelectronics to power‐efficient implants.

Abstract:This work shows that hygroscopic insulator organic field effect transistors can serve as the foundation for simple, solution‐processed, and fully solid‐state ion selective sensors, effective at physiologically relevant concentrations. Sodium, potassium, and calcium sensors are demonstrated. The three ion sensors are integrated onto a single chip for multi‐ion sensing, and simultaneous ion sensing is also demonstrated. Ion concentrations in the human body are closely tied to crucial biological functions and thus serve as important diagnostic health markers. Biological samples are chemically complex, containing a wide range of ions and molecules, necessitating the use of sensors that are highly selective to the target analyte. In this work, a multi‐ion sensing chip, capable of selectively detecting potassium (K+), sodium (Na+), and calcium (Ca2+) ions at physiologically relevant concentrations, is demonstrated. Each sensor consists of a simple, solution‐processed, all solid‐state, and low‐voltage organic thin film transistor, functionalized with polyvinyl chloride (PVC) ion selective membranes sandwiched between the insulator and gate electrode. The sensors are responsive to 4–5 decades of each primary ion. When a response from interfering ions is seen at higher concentrations, the sensors can uniquely discriminate between primary and interfering ions by a difference in the polarity of the current modulation. The sensors function well in mixed‐ion solutions, and can detect K+, Na+, and Ca2+ in simulated human blood serum, demonstrating the feasibility of using these devices for the analysis of complex analytes. This work represents an important step toward the development of simple, inexpensive organic multi‐ion sensors.
