Abstract:BackgroundThe disorder of lipid metabolism and genetic predisposition are major risk factors for coronary artery disease (CAD). Variants in the apolipoprotein A1 (APOA1) gene play an important role in the regulation of lipids. The objective of the present study was to investigate the effect of two polymorphisms (-75 G/A and +83 C/T) of APOA1 on lipid profiles and the risk of CAD.MethodsA total number of 300 subjects with CAD and 300 age and sex matched healthy controls were enrolled for the study. Genotyping of the APOA1 was performed by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) combined with gel electrophoresis, and then confirmed by direct sequencing.ResultsThe frequencies of APOA1 -75 AA genotype [odds ratio (OR) =0.50, 95 % confidence interval (CI) = 0.28, 0.88; P = 0.02] and APOA1 -75 A allele (OR =0.76, 95 % CI = 0.59, 0.98; P = 0.04) were significantly lower in CAD than in controls. The APOA1 -75 A allele was significantly associated with increasing serum concentrations of ApoA1 and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) (P < 0.001).ConclusionsThe individuals with the APOA1 -75 A allele were likely to have a lower risk of CAD as a result of its effect on higher serum concentrations of ApoA1 and HDL-C.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES: Apolipoprotein E gene (APOE) polymorphism is associated with the lipid profile and cardio-vascular disease. However, these relationships vary between ethnic groups. We evaluated, for the first time in an Afro-Caribbean population, the distribution of APOE polymorphisms and their associations with coronary artery disease (CAD), the lipid profile and other cardio-metabolic risk factors.METHODS: We studied 712 Afro-Caribbean subjects including 220 with documented CAD and 492 healthy subjects. TaqMan assays were performed to genotype rs7412 and rs429358, the two variants that determine the APOE alleles ε2, ε3 and ε4. The association between APOE genotype and the lipid profile was analysed by comparing ε2 carriers, ε3 homozygotes and ε4 carriers.RESULTS: The frequencies of ε2, ε3 and ε4 in the overall sample were 8%, 70% and 22%, respectively. CAD was not associated with APOE polymorphism. The total cholesterol level was higher in ε4 carriers compared with ε2 carriers: 5.07 vs 4.59 mmol/L (P = 0.016). The LDL-cholesterol level was lower in APOE ε2 carriers compared with ε3 homozygotes and ε4 carriers: 2.65 vs 3.03 and 3.17 mmol/L, respectively (p = 0.002). The total cholesterol/HDL-cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol/HDL-cholesterol ratios were similar in the three allelic groups. APOE polymorphism was not associated with diabetes, hypertension, waist circumference or body mass index.CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicate that APOE gene polymorphism is associated with the lipid profile but not with CAD in Afro-Caribbean people. This lack of association with CAD may be explained by the low atherogenic profile observed in ε4 carriers, which may warrant further investigation.

Abstract:Objective To study the effect of apolipoprotein E (ApoE) polymorphism on serum lipids and the relationship between apolipoprotein E polymorphism and coronary heart disease (CHD).Methods Polymerize chain reaction (PCR) and HhaI digestion were used for the detection of apolipoprotein E genotype on 71 patients with CHD and 69 control subjects.Results The frequencies of apolipoprotein E4 allele and E3/4 genotype were obviously increased in CHD group than in control group (P<0.01,P<0.05). Conclusion The apolipoprotein E polymorphism is related to the occurrence of coronary heart disease; apolipoprotein E4 allele is one of the most important hereditary factor for the occurrence of CHD.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION The apolipoprotein E (APOE) gene is a promising candidate for the diagnosis of hyperlipoproteinaemia and atherosclerosis. Polymorphisms in APOE have been reported to result in differential efficacies of statin drugs in atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. METHODS We classified the APOE genotypes of 225 patients treated with atorvastatin, and analysed the relation between genotypes and serum lipid levels. RESULTS The baseline serum levels of total cholesterol (TC) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) were significantly lower in carriers of APOE ε3 than of APOE ε4 genotypes. The serum levels of TC and LDL-C decreased significantly after 1 month of atorvastatin treatment. Atorvastatin has a higher significant effect in reducing serum TC and LDL-C levels in patients with the APOE ε4 genotype. CONCLUSION Polymorphism in the APOE gene is related to the efficacy of atorvastatin in reducing the serum levels of TC and LDL-C.

Abstract:Objective The aim of this study was to determine the impact of the SLCO1B1, apolipoprotein E (ApoE), and CYP2C9 genotypes on the lipid-lowering efficacy of fluvastatin. Methods We performed electronic searches on the PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases to identify studies published through October 2017. Studies that reported the effect estimates with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and high-density lipoprotein were included so that the different genotype categories could be compared. Weighted mean difference (WMD) was used to summarize the effect estimates. Results Six studies, involving a total of 1171 individuals, were included in the final analysis. We noted that the patient carrier SLCO1B1 521TT was associated with greater change in TC (WMD: -2.98; 95% CI: -5.12 to -0.84; P=0.006) and LDL (WMD: -5.58; 95% CI: -10.64 to -0.52; P=0.031) compared with 521TC or CC. Furthermore, the patient carrier ApoE*2/*3 showed more change in high-density lipoprotein compared with ApoE*3/*3 (WMD: 18.76; 95% CI: 8.97-28.55; P<0.001) and ApoE*3/*4 or *4/*4 (WMD: 22.51; 95% CI: 0.98-44.04; P=0.040). Finally, the CYP2C9 genotypes showed no correlation with the effects of fluvastatin on TC, triglyceride, and LDL. Conclusion The findings of this study suggested that the SLCO1B1 and ApoE polymorphisms could influence the lipid-lowering effect of fluvastatin, whereas the CYP2C9 genotypes were not associated with the therapeutic effects of fluvastatin.

Abstract:Background: The 5-lipoxygenase activating protein (FLAP), encoded by the activating 5-lipoxygenase (ALOX5AP) gene, is a crucial mediator of the biosynthesis of leukotrienes, which have been implicated in atherosclerosis. This study investigates whether ALOX5AP polymorphisms are associated with coronary artery disease (CAD) in a Chinese Han population.Methods: The promoter, exons, splice site region and 3'-untranslated region of the ALOX5AP gene were sequenced in 48 subjects. Three polymorphic sites (-1340T/G, +8733T/C, +20616G/C) found through sequencing were evaluated in 656 patients with angiographically proven CAD and 678 controls with normal coronary angiograms using a polymerase chain reaction and restriction fragment length polymorphism assay. Allelic, genotypic linkage disequilibrium and haplotypic association testing were performed using SHEsis and LDA software. Binary logistic regression was used to control for the presence of vascular risk factors.Results: Seven single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were found through screening. No significant differences in allele carriers and genotype frequencies of the ALOX5AP polymorphisms were observed between the two groups. However, when the results of the three SNPs were combined, there was a significant association between two of the haplotypes and the risk of CAD. The haplotype GCG had a significantly greater frequency in patients than in controls (P<0.001, OR=1.728, 95% CI=1.375-2.171), and the frequency of haplotype TCG was higher in controls (P<0.001, OR=0.623, 95% CI=0.519-0.748).Conclusion: The data indicate that ALOX5AP gene variation is a genetic factor associated with interindividual differences in CAD risk. Abstract:Background Studies examining the association of apolipoprotein A5 (APOA5) gene -1131 T>C polymorphism with blood lipids produced inconsistent results. In this meta-analysis encompassing all the relevant studies, we aimed to investigate the association of the -1131 T>C polymorphism with fasting blood lipids. Methods We limited our analysis to the following four blood lipid variables: total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). Subjects were confined to adults who were at least 18 years old. A dominant model was used for this meta-analysis. 37 studies with 37859 subjects were included in this meta-analysis. Results The results showed that the carriers of -1131C allele have higher blood TC and TG than the non-carriers: standardized mean difference (SMD) = 0.08, 95% confidence interval (CI, 0.05, 0.11), P < 0.00001, P heterogeneity = 0.42, and SMD = 0.31, 95% CI (0.27, 0.34), P < 0.00001, P heterogeneity = 0.0003, respectively. Significant association between the -1131 T>C polymorphism and lower blood HDL-C was also detected under the dominant model: SMD = -0.17, 95% CI (-0.21, -0.14), P < 0.00001, P heterogeneity = 0.003. Conclusions Our meta-analysis supports the strong association of the APOA5 -1131 T>C polymorphism with higher levels of TC and TG, and lower levels of HDL-C.

Abstract:Background The functional dissection of genetic risk opens the door to strategies for pharmacological manipulation of molecular and cellular processes implicated in human diseases, including coronary artery disease (CAD). Aim To assess the relationship between a set of single nucleotide polymorphisms previously associated with CAD and coronary artery calcium (CAC) score in an asymptomatic population from Portugal. Methods Prospective study in a cohort of 1,284 subjects aged 59.3±8.9 years, 73.6% males without apparent CAD. The CAC score was performed by cardiac computed tomography and reported as Agatston units according to the Hoff nomogram. Anthropometric, conventional, and biochemical risk factors were evaluated. Thirty-three single nucleotide polymorphisms were genotyped by TaqMan real-time PCR. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis estimated variables associated with the CAC score. Results After bivariate analysis, PHACTR1 rs1332844 C>T, a downstream regulator of the endothelin-1 gene, showed a significant association with CAC score (p=0.015), together with CDKN2B-AS1 variants rs4977574 A>G in the locus 9p21.3 (p=0.002) and rs1333049 G>C (p=0.010). MTHFD1L gene encodes a mitochondrial enzyme responsible for homocysteine remethylating in methionine, and rs6922269 G>A showed protection against artery calcification (p=0.013). After multivariate logistic regression, PHACTR1 rs1332844 (CT+TT) (p=0.009) and CDKN2B-AS1 rs4977574 A>G (GG) (p=0.002) remained in the equation as independently associated with arterial calcification, together with male sex (p=0.039), age (p<0.0001), hypertension (p=0.001), diabetes (p<0.0001), smoking status (p<0.0001) and obesity (p=0.020). MTHFD1L rs6922269 AA also remained as significant protection from arterial calcification (p=0.027). Conclusion The present work showed two genetic variants, PHACTR1 and CDKN2B-AS1, linked to arterial wall calcification, herewith clinical and environmental risk factors. MTHFD1L showed protection. Understanding the genetic basis of vessel calcification can enable lifestyle changes or pharmacologic therapy to attenuate risk before the disease becomes clinic. More research in this field is critical to understanding the genetic basis of CAD through an intermediate phenotype, coronary arterial wall calcification.

Abstract:Apolipoprotein E (ApoE) plays a critical role in cholesterol transport and protection against the development of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Humans have 3 prevalent isoforms of ApoE: apolipoprotein E2 (ApoE2), apolipoprotein E3 (ApoE3), and apolipoprotein E4 (ApoE4). The E4 allele has been associated with higher ASCVD risk. While E4 patients do have higher cholesterol levels, they do not have enough to account for the substantially elevated ASCVD risk relative to E2 and E3 patients. ASCVD risk calculators would underestimate the true effect of E4 if the difference was caused entirely by a difference in cholesterol level. This article reviews the function of ApoE in atherosclerosis, and how each isoform functions differently. We review what is known about the molecular mechanisms through which ApoE prevents endothelial dysfunction and damage, how ApoE stimulates macrophage efflux of cholesterol from atherogenic lesions, and the ways in which ApoE decreases inflammation throughout atherosclerosis. The impact of ApoE on Alzheimer’s disease and a discussion of why it is possibly unrelated to ASCVD prevention are included. Clinical applications to hyperlipidemia management and ASCVD prevention in specific patient populations are discussed.

[Study on Polymorphism in the Apolipoprotein A5 Gene in Patients with Premature Coronary Heart Disease].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To investigate the association between the apolipoprotein A5(APOA5) -1131T/C polymorphism and premature coronary heart disease in northern Chinese Han population.METHODS:Using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE), we analyzed the genotype and allele distribution in 140 patients with premature coronary heart disease diagnosed by coronary angiography and 156 healthy controls. The levels of serum lipid profiles were also studied by biochemical methods.RESULTS:The allele frequency of APOA5-1131T/C polymorphism in the premature coronary heart disease group was significantly higher (43.2% vs. 33.0%, P=0.011) than that in the control group. Compared with TT homozygotes, CC homozygotes exhibited a 2.809-fold (95% CI 1.331-5.927) increased risk of developing premature coronary heart disease. Logistic regression analysis found that this correlation was independent of sex, age, body mass index (BMI), smoking history as well as serum total cholesterol(TC), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels; In premature coronary heart disease group, the triglyceride(TG) level in CC homozygotes was significantly higher than those in TC heterozygotes or TT homozygotes.CONCLUSION:The APOA5-1131T/C polymorphism has influence on serum TG level, and the APOA5-1131C allele is associated with the development of premature coronary heart disease in northern Chinese Han population.

Abstract:Excess body weight is associated with increased mortality and risk of developing cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Body fat distribution is now considered a better indicator of disease risk than body mass index (BMI), with central adiposity associated with dyslipidaemia and insulin resistance. Dietary modification is unquestionably important in the prevention of obesity and CVD, with the type but not the amount of dietary fat emerging as an important determinant of both diseases. Although reducing saturated fat (SFA) intake via replacement with unsaturated fatty acids (UFA) is a key public health strategy for CVD prevention, variability in the lipid lowering response has been observed. This narrative review aims to investigate the link between adiposity and CVD risk, and the role of dietary fat composition and APOLIPOPROTEIN (APO)E genotype on this relationship. In the absence of weight loss, replacing dietary SFA with UFA reduces central adiposity and anthropometric measures, and is linked with lower total and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol concentrations. However, differences in study populations and body composition techniques needs to be taken into consideration. To date, only a limited number of studies have determined the role of APOE on body composition and CVD risk but findings are inconsistent. Both APOE2 and APOE4 alleles have been correlated with adiposity related markers and an APOE genotype-BMI interaction has been reported on fasting lipids. However, studies are often performed retrospectively leading to small sample sizes within the genotype groups. Further studies are needed to confirm the relationship between APOE genotype, adiposity and circulating CVD risk markers.

Effect of Six Candidate Genes on Early Aging in a French Population.

Abstract:Background and aims: The objective of this study was to examine the association between an aging indicator previously defined from a nationwide population study, and lipids and apolipoproteins, angiotensin converting enzyme, paraoxonase activities, and six candidate genes related to the aging process. Methods: Two hundred and fifty-six healthy Caucasian men (69.8±4.0 years) were included in the study. Total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL-cholesterol, lipoprotein(a), apolipoprotein A1, B and E concentrations, and the activities of paraoxonase, arylesterase, and angiotensin-converting enzymes were determined by standardized laboratory methods. A multiplex assay was used to genotype the studied polymorphisms: apolipoprotein E, lipoprotein lipase, paraoxonase, methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase, cystathionine β-synthase and angiotensin-converting enzymes. Results: Paraoxonase polymorphism at codon 192 (Gln/Arg) was the only one significantly associated with the aging indicator, Gln homozygotes being more advanced in aging compared with Arg allele carriers. It was also observed that the aging indicator was positively correlated with serum concentrations of total cholesterol, triglycerides and apolipoprotein B, and negatively with the activities of basal and stimulated paraoxonase and arylesterase. Multiple regression analysis showed that triglycerides and basal paraoxonase activity explain 13.6% of the variance of the aging indicator. Conclusions: Triglyceride concentration and paraoxonase gene and activities may contribute to the aging process. Taking into account the smallness of the sample size, and the poor level of significance due to the implication of paraoxonase polymorphism at codon 192, these results need to be verified in further studies on a greater number of subjects.

Abstract:Background The study aims to assess the association of apolipoprotein E (APOE) gene polymorphisms with serological lipid and inflammatory markers to determine their potential role in predicting the risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). Methodology A total of 915 individuals underwent testing for lipid and inflammatory biomarkers at Vibrant America Clinical Laboratory. Clinical data, blood lipid and inflammatory profiles, and APOE genotyping were analyzed using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). Results Compared to the E3/E3 genotype, individuals with E2/E3 genotypes showed higher levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL), triglycerides, apolipoprotein A (APOA), high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), and myeloperoxidase (MPO). E2/E4 genotype carriers had higher levels of HDL, triglycerides, Lp(a), and N-terminal pro b-type natriuretic peptide (BNPNT). E3/E4 genotypes were associated with elevated levels of total cholesterol, LDL, Lp(a), hs-CRP, small-density low-density lipoprotein (SDLDL), oxidized LDL (OXLDL), MPO, LDL-CAL, PLAC, and APOB. The E4/E4 group displayed higher concentrations of total cholesterol, LDL, APOB, Lp(a), hs-CRP, SDLDL, OXLDL, MPO, LDLCAL, and PLAC compared to E3/E3 carriers. These findings highlight the potential atherogenic effect of the ε4 allele and the protective effect of the ε2 allele based on lipid and inflammatory marker profiles. Conclusions This study provides strong evidence linking APOE gene polymorphism to abnormal serum lipid and inflammatory profiles. Individuals carrying the ε4 alleles exhibited dysregulated lipid metabolism and abnormal inflammatory markers, increasing their risk of CVD and AD. Early detection and prompt diagnosis are crucial for implementing therapeutic, dietary, and lifestyle interventions to mitigate risks and prevent or delay lipid and inflammation-related disorders.
Cardiovascular Risk-Associated Allele Frequencies For 15 Genes In Healthy Elderly French And Chinese

Abstract:In order to investigate possible ethnic differences in genetic and environmental determinants, we investigated several cardiovascular disease-associated genetic variations in successful ageing populations of France (Nancy) and China (Hong Kong). Allelic frequencies of these genetic variations were compared between healthy elderly Chinese (n = 103) and French populations (n= 100). A multi-locus assaywas used to genotype 15 genes for 29 biallelic sites, genes implicated in lipid and homocysteine metabolism, thrombosis, leukocyte adhesion, and blood pressure regulation. For most of the candidate markers within lipid metabolism genes, the less frequent alleles were more common in the Chinese population compared with the French population, while the less frequent alleles of the majority of the other markers were detected only or more commonly in the French population. In conclusion, polymorphisms in 13 genes exhibited statistically significant differences in allelic frequencies between the two populations. Since the two populations were selected as examples of successful ageing, we could hypothesise that genetic factors that could play a role in a successful ageing process may be different between the two populations.

Influence of Common Gene Variants on Lipid Levels and Risk of Coronary Heart Disease in Afro-Caribbeans

Abstract:A lower mortality rate from coronary artery disease (CAD) and a more favourable lipid profile have been reported in Afro-Caribbeans compared with people of European ancestry. The aim of this study was to determine whether common lipid variants identified in other populations are associated with lipid levels and CAD in Afro-Caribbeans. We studied 705 Afro-Caribbeans (192 with CAD) who were genotyped for 13 lipid-associated variants. We calculated three polygenic risk scores (PRSs) for elevated LDL (LDL-PRS), decreased HDL (HDL-PRS), and elevated triglycerides (TG-PRS). LDL-PRS, HDL-PRS, and TG-PRS were associated with LDL, HDL, and TG levels, respectively. The LDL-PRS was positively associated with LDL > 2.6 mmol/L and with LDL > 3.0 mmol/L with ORs (odds ratios) of 1.33 (95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.14–1.56) and 1.40 (CI = 1.21–1.62), respectively. The HDL-PRS was associated with a low HDL category (HDL 1.55 mmol/L) with an OR of 0.79 (CI = 0.65–0.96). The LDL-PRS was positively associated with CAD after adjustment for age, gender, hypertension, diabetes, and smoking with an OR of 1.27 (CI = 1.06–1.51) but not the HDL-PRS nor the TG-PRS. Results of the present study indicate that common lipid variants are associated with lipid levels and prevalent CAD in Afro-Caribbeans.

Selected LDLR and APOE Polymorphisms Affect Cognitive and Functional Response to Lipophilic Statins in Alzheimer's Disease

Abstract:Effects of statins over clinical changes in Alzheimer's disease (AD) are usually non-significant, but epistatic interactions between genetic variants involved in cholesterol metabolism could be important for such effects. We aimed to investigate whether LDLR single-nucleotide polymorphisms rs11669576 (LDLR8), rs5930 (LDLR10), and rs5925 (LDLR13) are associated with cognitive and functional changes in AD, while also considering APOE haplotypes and lipid-lowering treatment with lipophilic statins for stratification. Consecutive outpatients with late-onset AD were screened with cognitive tests, while caregivers scored functionality and caregiver burden, with prospective neurotranslational correlations documented for 1 year. For 179 patients, minor allele frequencies were 0.078 for rs11669576-A (14.5% heterozygotes), 0.346 for rs5930-A (42.5% heterozygotes), and 0.444 for rs5925-C (56.4% heterozygotes), all in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium; 134 patients had hypercholesterolemia, and 133 used lipophilic statins. Carriers of rs11669576-G had faster cognitive decline, while functional decline was slower for carriers of rs11669576-A who used lipophilic statins. APOE-ε4 carriers who also carried rs5930-AA had improved caregiver burden, while carriers of haplotypes that included rs5930-AG had worse cognitive and functional outcomes, though carriers of the A allele of rs5930 had better cognitive and functional response to lipophilic statins. APOE-ε4 non-carriers who carried rs5925-TT had slower cognitive decline, while lipophilic statins protected carriers of the other genotypes. We preliminarily conclude that reportedly protective variants of LDLR and APOE against risk of AD also slowed cognitive decline, regardless of cholesterol variations, while therapy with lipophilic statins might benefit carriers of specific genetic variants.

Abstract:Background Hypercholesterolemia arising from abnormal lipid metabolism is one of the critical risk factors for coronary artery disease (CAD), however the roles of genetic variants in lipid metabolism-related genes on premature CAD (≤60 years old) development still require further investigation. We herein genotyped four single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in lipid metabolism-related genes (rs1132899 and rs5167 in APOC4 , rs1801693 and rs7765781 in LPA ), aimed to shed light on the influence of these SNPs on individual susceptibility to early-onset CAD. Methods Genotyping of the four SNPs (rs1132899, rs5167, rs1801693 and rs7765781) was performed in 224 premature CAD cases and 297 control subjects (≤60 years old) using polymerase chain reaction-ligation detection reaction (PCR–LDR) method. The association of these SNPs with premature CAD was performed with SPSS software. Results Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that C allele (OR = 1.50, P = 0.027) and CC genotype (OR = 2.84, P = 0.022) of APOC4 rs1132899 were associated with increased premature CAD risk, while the other three SNPs had no significant effect. Further stratified analysis uncovered a more evident association with the risk of premature CAD among male subjects (C allele, OR = 1.65, and CC genotype, OR = 3.33). Conclusions Our data provides the first evidence that APOC4 rs1132899 polymorphism was associated with an increased risk of premature CAD in Chinese subjects, and the association was more significant among male subjects.

Abstract:Effective in situ injection technology for the remediation of dense nonaqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs) such as trichloroethylene (TCE) requires the use of decontamination agents that effectively migrate through the soil media and react efficiently with dissolved TCE and bulk TCE. We describe the use of a novel decontamination system containing highly uniform carbon microspheres in the optimal size range for transport through the soil. The microspheres are enveloped in a polyelectrolyte (carboxymethyl cellulose, CMC) to which a bimetallic nanoparticle system of zero-valent iron and Pd is attached. The carbon serves as a strong adsorbent to TCE, while the bimetallic nanoparticle system provides the reactive component. The polyelectrolyte serves to stabilize the carbon microspheres in aqueous solution. The overall system resembles a colloidal micelle with a hydrophilic shell (polyelectrolyte coating) and hard hydrophobic core (carbon). In contact with bulk TCE, there is a sharp partitioning of the system to the TCE side of the interface due to the hydrophobicity of the core. These multifunctional systems appear to satisfy criteria related to remediation and are made with potentially environmentally benign materials.
