Abstract:It is a key issue to characterize the model of standard quantum theory out of general models by an operational condition. The framework of General Probabilistic Theories (GPTs) is a new information theoretical approach to single out standard quantum theory. It is known that traditional properties, for example, Bell-CHSH inequality are not sufficient to single out standard quantum theory among possible models in GPTs. As a more precise property, we focus on the bound of the performance for an information task called state discrimination in general models. We give an equivalent condition for outperforming the minimum discrimination error probability under the standard quantum theory, which is given by the trace norm. Besides, by applying the equivalent condition, we characterize standard quantum theory out of general models in GPTs by the bound of the performance for state discrimination.

Abstract:General Probabilistic Theories provide the most general mathematical framework for the theory of probability in an operationally natural manner, and generalize classical and quantum theories. In this article, we study state-discrimination problems in general probabilistic theories using a Bayesian strategy. After re-formulation of the theories with mathematical rigor, we first prove that an optimal observable to discriminate any (finite) number of states always exists in the most general setting. Next, we revisit our recently proposed geometric approach for the problem and show that, for two-state discrimination, this approach is indeed effective in arbitrary dimensional cases. Moreover, our method reveals an operational meaning of Gudder's ``intrinsic metric'' by means of the optimal success probability, which turns out to be a generalization of the trace distance for quantum systems. As its by-product, an information-disturbance theorem in general probabilistic theories is derived, generalizing its well known quantum version.

Abstract:Quantum state discrimination involves identifying a given state out of a set of possible states. When the states are mutually orthogonal, perfect state discrimination is always possible using a global measurement. In the case of multipartite systems when the parties are constrained to use multiple rounds of local operations and classical communication (LOCC), perfect state discrimination is often impossible even with the use of \emph{asymptotic LOCC}, wherein an error is allowed but must vanish in the limit of an infinite number of rounds. Utilizing our recent results on asymptotic LOCC, we derive a lower bound on the error probability for LOCC discrimination of any given set of mutually orthogonal pure states. Informed by the insights gained from this lower bound, we are able to prove necessary conditions for perfect state discrimination by asymptotic LOCC. We then illustrate by example the power of these necessary conditions in significantly simplifying the determination of whether perfect discrimination of a given set of states can be accomplished arbitrarily closely using LOCC. The latter examples include a proof that perfect discrimination by asymptotic LOCC is impossible for a certain subset of \emph{minimal} unextendible product bases (UPB), where minimal means that for the given multipartite system, no UPB with a smaller number of states can exist. We also give a simple proof that what has been called \emph{strong nonlocality without entanglement} is considerably stronger than had previously been demonstrated.

Abstract:Error probability is a popular and well-studied optimization criterion in discriminating non-orthogonal quantum states. It captures the threat from an adversary who can only query the actual state once. However, when the adversary is able to use a brute-force strategy to query the state, discrimination measurement with minimum error probability does not necessarily minimize the number of queries to get the actual state. In light of this, we take Massey's guesswork as the underlying optimization criterion and study the problem of minimum guesswork discrimination. We show that this problem can be reduced to a semidefinite programming problem. Necessary and sufficient conditions when a measurement achieves minimum guesswork are presented. We also reveal the relation between minimum guesswork and minimum error probability. We show that the two criteria generally disagree with each other, except for the special case with two states. Both upper and lower information-theoretic bounds on minimum guesswork are given. For geometrically uniform quantum states, we provide sufficient conditions when a measurement achieves minimum guesswork. Moreover, we give the necessary and sufficient condition under which making no measurement at all would be the optimal strategy.

Abstract:We consider one copy of a quantum system prepared in one of two nonorthogonal pure product states of multipartite distributed among separated parties. We show that there exist protocols that achieve optimal conclusive discrimination by means of local operations and classical communications as good as by global measurements. Also, we show a protocol that minimizes the average number of local operations, Our result implies that two pure product multipartite states might not have the nonlocal property although more than two can have.

Abstract:We investigate the ability of a quantum measurement device to discriminate two states or, generically, two hypotheses. In full generality, the measurement can be performed a number n of times, and arbitrary preprocessing of the states and postprocessing of the obtained data are allowed. There is an intrinsic error associated with the measurement device, which we aim to quantify, that limits its discrimination power. We minimize various error probabilities (averaged or constrained) over all pairs of n-partite input states. These probabilities, or their exponential rates of decrease in the case of large n, give measures of the discrimination power of the device. For the asymptotic rate of the averaged error probability, we obtain a Chernoff-type bound, dual to the standard Chernoff bound for which the state pair is fixed and the optimization is over all measurements. The key point in the derivation is that identical copies of input states become optimal in asymptotic settings. Optimal asymptotic rates are also obtained for constrained error probabilities, dual to Stein's lemma and Hoeffding's bound. We further show that adaptive protocols where the state preparer gets feedback from the measurer do not improve the asymptotic rates. These rates thus quantify the ultimate discrimination power of a measurement device.

Abstract:We consider the decision problem between a finite number of states of a finite quantum system, when an arbitrarily large number of copies of the system is available for measurements. We provide an upper bound on the exponential rate of decay of the averaged probability of rejecting the true state. It represents a generalized quantum Chernoff distance of a finite set of states. As our main result we prove that the bound is sharp in the case of pure states.

Abstract:We consider optimal state discrimination in a general convex operational framework, so-called generalized probabilistic theories (GPTs), and present a general method of optimal discrimination by applying the complementarity problem from convex optimization. The method exploits the convex geometry of states but not other detailed conditions or relations of states and effects. We also show that properties in optimal quantum state discrimination are shared in GPTs in general: i) no measurement sometimes gives optimal discrimination, and ii) optimal measurement is not unique.

Abstract:We study a variant of quantum hypothesis testing wherein an additional 'inconclusive' measurement outcome is added, allowing one to abstain from attempting to discriminate the hypotheses. The error probabilities are then conditioned on a successful attempt, with inconclusive trials disregarded. We completely characterise this task in both the single-shot and asymptotic regimes, providing exact formulas for the optimal error probabilities. In particular, we prove that the asymptotic error exponent of discriminating any two quantum states $\rho$ and $\sigma$ is given by the Hilbert projective metric $D_{\max}(\rho\|\sigma) + D_{\max}(\sigma \| \rho)$ in asymmetric hypothesis testing, and by the Thompson metric $\max \{ D_{\max}(\rho\|\sigma), D_{\max}(\sigma \| \rho) \}$ in symmetric hypothesis testing. This endows these two quantities with fundamental operational interpretations in quantum state discrimination. Our findings extend to composite hypothesis testing, where we show that the asymmetric error exponent with respect to any convex set of density matrices is given by a regularisation of the Hilbert projective metric. We apply our results also to quantum channels, showing that no advantage is gained by employing adaptive or even more general discrimination schemes over parallel ones, in both the asymmetric and symmetric settings. Our state discrimination results make use of no properties specific to quantum mechanics and are also valid in general probabilistic theories.

Abstract:We analyze the optimal measurements to access classical correlations in arbitrary two-qubit states. Two-qubit states can be transformed into the canonical forms via local unitary operations. For the canonical forms, we investigate the probability distribution of the optimal measurements. The probability distribution of the optimal measurements is found to be centralized in the vicinity of a specific von Neumann measurement, which we call the maximal-correlation-direction measurement (MCDM). We prove that, for the states with zero discord and maximally mixed marginals, the MCDM is the optimal measurement. Furthermore, we give an upper bound of quantum discord based on the MCDM, and investigate its performance for approximating the quantum discord.

Abstract:Quantum state discrimination is a fundamental task in quantum information theory and also an important building block in practical quantum information applications. We here consider optimal state discrimination in a noisy environment in which quantum states may be corrupted due to the intervention of an environment. We show that even if there exists an unwanted interaction with an environment and the channel describing the interaction is not yet identified, a measurement prepared in the beginning for optimal state discrimination can be preserved as an optimal measurement ever after a channel use. This means that in a practical realization of quantum communication, verification of a channel can be circumvented and the cost of quantum tomography is saved. We also show a protocol of preserving an optimal measurement for state discrimination.
A Semidefinite Programming Approach to Optimal Unambiguous Discrimination of Quantum States

Abstract:In this paper we consider the problem of unambiguous discrimination between a set of linearly independent pure quantum states. We show that the design of the optimal measurement that minimizes the probability of an inconclusive result can be formulated as a semidefinite programming problem. Based on this formulation, we develop a set of necessary and sufficient conditions for an optimal quantum measurement. We show that the optimal measurement can be computed very efficiently in polynomial time by exploiting the many well-known algorithms for solving semidefinite programs, which are guaranteed to converge to the global optimum. Using the general conditions for optimality, we derive necessary and sufficient conditions so that the measurement that results in an equal probability of an inconclusive result for each one of the quantum states is optimal. We refer to this measurement as the equal-probability measurement (EPM). We then show that for any state set, the prior probabilities of the states can be chosen such that the EPM is optimal. Finally, we consider state sets with strong symmetry properties and equal prior probabilities for which the EPM is optimal. We first consider geometrically uniform state sets that are defined over a group of unitary matrices and are generated by a single generating vector. We then consider compound geometrically uniform state sets which are generated by a group of unitary matrices using multiple generating vectors, where the generating vectors satisfy a certain (weighted) norm constraint.

Abstract:We consider the problem of discriminating finite-dimensional quantum processes, also called quantum supermaps, that can consist of multiple time steps. Obtaining the ultimate performance for discriminating quantum processes is of fundamental importance, but is challenging mainly due to the necessity of considering all discrimination strategies allowed by quantum mechanics, including entanglement-assisted strategies and adaptive strategies. In the case in which the processes to be discriminated have internal memories, the ultimate performance would generally be more difficult to analyze. In this paper, we present a simple upper bound on the ultimate success probability for discriminating arbitrary quantum processes. In the special case of multi-shot channel discrimination, it can be shown that the ultimate success probability increases by at most a constant factor determined by the given channels if the number of channel evaluations increases by one. We also present a lower bound based on Bayesian updating, which has a low computational cost. Our numerical experiments demonstrate that the proposed bounds are reasonably tight. The proposed bounds do not explicitly depend on any quantum phenomena, and can be readily extended to a general operational probabilistic theory.

Abstract:We provide a feasible necessary and sufficient condition for when an unknown quantum operation (quantum device) secretly selected from a set of known quantum operations can be identified perfectly within a finite number of queries, and thus complete the characterization of the perfect distinguishability of quantum operations. We further design an optimal protocol which can achieve the perfect discrimination between two quantum operations by a minimal number of queries. Interestingly, we find that an optimal perfect discrimination between two isometries is always achievable without auxiliary systems or entanglement.

Abstract:We find the minimal number of settings to test quantum theory based on real numbers, assuming separability of the sources, modifying the recent proposal [M.-O. Abstract:We consider the optimal discrimination of nonorthogonal qubit states with post-measurement information and provide an analytic structure of the optimal measurements. We also show that there is always a null optimal measurement when post-measurement information is given. Further, in discriminating four states using post-measurement information, we analytically provide the optimal probability of correct guessing and show that the uniqueness of optimal measurement is equivalent to the non-existence of non-null optimal measurement with post-measurement information.

Quantum Implementation of Non-Positive-Operator-Valued Measurements in General Probabilistic Theories by Post-Selected POVMs

Abstract:It is important problem to clarify the class of implementable quantum measurements from both fundamental and applicable viewpoints. Positive-Operator-Valued Measure (POVM) measurements are implementable by the indirect measurement methods, and the class is the largest class determined by the mathematical structure of Hilbert space. However, if we assume probabilistic consistency in our operations instead of the structure of Hilbert space, we can deal with Non-Positive-Operator-Valued Measure (N-POVM) measurements in the framework of General Probabilistic Theories (GPTs). N-POVM measurements are not considered as implementable, but this paper gives a constructive way to implement N-POVM measurements by POVM measurements and post-selection in quantum theory when we restrict the domain of target states. Besides, we show that a post-selected POVM measurement is regarded as an N-POVM measurement in a restricted domain. These results provide a new relationship between N-POVM measurements in GPTs and post-selection.

Abstract:A key concept of quantum information theory is that accessing information encoded in a quantum system requires us to discriminate between several possible states the system could be in. A natural generalization of this problem, namely, quantum sequence discrimination, appears in various quantum information processing tasks, the objective being to determine the state of a finite sequence of quantum states. Since such a sequence is a composite quantum system, the fundamental question is whether an optimal measurement is local, i.e., comprising measurements on the individual members, or collective, i.e. requiring joint measurement(s). In some known instances of this problem, the optimal measurement is local, whereas in others, it is collective. But, so far, a definite prescription based solely on the problem description has been lacking. In this paper, we prove that if the members of a given sequence are drawn secretly and independently from an ensemble or even from different ensembles, the optimum success probability is achievable by fixed local measurements on the individual members of the sequence, and no collective measurement is necessary. This holds for both minimum-error and unambiguous state discrimination paradigms.

Asymptotic Quantum State Discrimination for Mixtures of Unitarily Related States

Abstract:Given a mixture of states, finding a way to optimally discriminate its elements is a prominent problem in quantum communication theory. In this paper, we will address mixtures of density operators that are unitarily equivalent via elements of a one-parameter unitary group, and the corresponding quantum state discrimination (QSD) problems. We will be particularly interested in QSD as time goes to infinity. We first present an approach to QSD in the case of countable mixtures and address the respective asymptotic QSD optimization problems, proving necessary and sufficient conditions for minimal error to be obtained in the asymptotic regime (we say that in such a case QSD is fully solvable). We then outline an analogous approach to uncountable mixtures, presenting some conjectures that mirror the results presented for the cases of countable mixtures. As a technical tool, we prove and use an infinite dimensional version of the well-known Barnum-Knill bound.
