Abstract:The rapidly evolving future of work, driven by technological advancements, globalization, and shifting societal dynamics, presents significant opportunities, challenges, and implications for Human Resource Management. Whilst few scholars have responded to this in the mainstream HRM, there is a drought of research on the implications of the future of work and its dynamics on international, comparative, and cross-national Human Resource Management (HRM) sub-field. Through a random review, examination, critical analysis, and synthesizing of articles on the Future of Work and International HRM, this paper explores these aspects and highlights key trends such as automation, artificial intelligence, remote work, and the gig economy as they tend to shape the future of work and subsequently the practice of International HRM. Findings reveal that organizations face complex HRM challenges in a globalized workforce, diverse cultural contexts, and emerging technologies. The immense opportunities lie in leveraging technology to enhance productivity, efficiency, and innovation. International HRM practices can benefit from global talent pools, promoting diversity and multiculturalism. Cross-national HRM strategies facilitate knowledge transfer, skill development, and cross-cultural collaboration. However, challenges arise from workforce displacement due to automation and AI, raising concerns about job security and inequality. HRM professionals must address reskilling and upskilling initiatives to ensure employees remain adaptable and competitive. Managing a geographically dispersed workforce requires effective communication, coordination, and cultural sensitivity. The implications for international, comparative, and cross-national HRM practices are significant. Agile and flexible approaches to talent acquisition, retention, and development are necessary. Strategies must be tailored to specific cultural contexts, considering legal, economic, and social factors. Ethical considerations, including data privacy, algorithmic bias, and employee well-being, become paramount. In conclusion, we have proposed that HRM professionals must stay updated, collaborate with diverse stakeholders, and embrace innovative practices to harness the future of work's full potential while mitigating its challenges. Proactive and forward-thinking approaches are essential for organizations and HRM practitioners to navigate this dynamic landscape successfully.

Abstract:As the UK's Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors (CIEHF) celebrates its 75th anniversary, it is worth reflecting on our discipline's contribution, current state, and critical future endeavours. We present the perspectives of 18 EHF professionals who were asked to respond to five questions regarding the impact of EHF, contemporary challenges, and future directions. Co-authors were in agreement that EHF's impact has been only limited to date and that critical issues require resolution, such as increasing the number of suitably qualified practitioners, resolving the research-practice gap, and increasing awareness of EHF and its benefits. Frequently discussed future directions include advanced emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, the development of new EHF methods, and enhancing the quality and reach of education and training. The majority felt there will be a need for EHF in 75 years; however, many noted that our methods will need to adapt to meet new needs. Practitioner statement: This article provides the perspectives of 18 Ergonomics and Human Factors (EHF) professionals on the impact of EHF, contemporary challenges and critical future directions, and changes that are necessary to ensure EHF remains relevant in future. As such, it provides important guidance on future EHF research and practice.

Abstract:The future of work embodies changes to the workplace, work, and workforce, which require additional occupational safety and health (OSH) stakeholder attention. Examples include workplace developments in organizational design, technological job displacement, and work arrangements; work advances in artificial intelligence, robotics, and technologies; and workforce changes in demographics, economic security, and skills. This paper presents the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health's Future of Work Initiative; suggests an integrated approach to address worker safety, health, and well-being; introduces priority topics and subtopics that confer a framework for upcoming future of work research directions and resultant practical applications; and discusses preliminary next steps. All future of work issues impact one another. Future of work transformations are contingent upon each of the standalone factors discussed in this paper and their combined effects. Occupational safety and health stakeholders are becoming more aware of the significance and necessity of these factors for the workplace, work, and workforce to flourish, merely survive, or disappear altogether as the future evolves. The future of work offers numerous opportunities, while also presenting critical but not clearly understood difficulties, exposures, and hazards. It is the responsibility of OSH researchers and other partners to understand the implications of future of work scenarios to translate effective interventions into practice for employers safeguarding the safety, health, and well-being of their workers.

Abstract:Society faces a growing set of global risks that are highly complex, hard to predict, and extremely difficult to manage. Though the risks are well known, to date the global response has been inadequate and there are few dedicated scientific theories and methods available to support effective responses in future (Aven and Zio, Citation 2021 ; Salmon et al. Citation 2021 ). The World Economic Forum's Global Risks Report (World Economic Forum Citation 2023 ) highlights several global problems that require immediate attention (within the next two to ten years) such as responding to natural disasters and extreme weather events, mitigating and adapting to climate change, addressing cybercrime, avoiding several natural resource crises, and large-scale involuntary migration. Since each of these problems essentially is impacted by and on humans, Ergonomics and Human Factors (E/HF) has a critical role to play in how we effectively respond to these complex global problems (Salmon et al. Citation 2019 , Citation 2021 ; Thatcher, Nayak, and Waterson Citation 2020 ; Thatcher et al. Citation 2018 ). In just one recent (and still unfolding) example, the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in over 6.9 million deaths globally to date, has cost an estimated $28 trillion to the global economy, and resulted in significant and prolonged challenges to free human movement. The COVID-19 pandemic provides a sobering example of the significant human, societal and economic costs incurred when global risks are not well managed. The State of Science paper on ergonomics and global problems by Thatcher et al. ( Citation 2018 ) identified significant shortcomings in E/HF work directed at contributing to addressing and mitigating global problems. In particular, while there have been numerous theoretical contributions (García-Acosta et al. Citation 2014 ; Helander Citation 1997 ; Moray Citation 1995 ; Salmon et al. Citation 2019 ; Thatcher Citation 2013 ; Thatcher et al. Citation 2018 ; Vicente Citation 2008 ) there is a scarcity of empirical and practical studies, especially in areas such as water and sanitation problems, food security issues, urbanisation, and pollution and waste. Even in areas where there has been comparatively more empirical work (e.g. energy issues, violence and terrorism, and health issues), the work has largely been approached from a micro-ergonomics or meso-ergonomics perspective (Thatcher et al. Citation 2018 ). Given the interrelatedness and complexity of these problems it is concerning that E/HF has taken relatively few strides towards understanding these macro-systems perspectives. This is especially concerning given that the last two decades have seen a significant deterioration in the health and wellbeing of global systems and emerging evidence that several planetary boundaries may already have been breached (Rockström et al. Citation 2023 ).

Abstract:Although a significant amount of research has already been published, the field of ergonomics/human factors and sustainability (E/HF-S) has not yet been systematically profiled based on recent studies. Conducting a systematic review of the literature, this article aims: (i) to identify the main emergent research themes in this subject area and (ii) to provide future directions for applied research and practice on E/HF-S. Six emergent research themes were identified in this literature allowing for a proposal to synthesise the main concepts related to E/HF-S. However, it was noted that there are still relatively few empirical papers which assess the models being developed or that apply E/HF principles to sustainability challenges. Thus, this paper identifies the opportunities for practical application related to E/HF-S. The last part of the paper explores the E/HF-S opportunities using an external framework; the United Nations' sustainable development goals. Practitioner summary: The field of ergonomics/human factors and sustainability (E/HF-S) has not yet been organised by recent studies. This special issue addresses this topic and brings together 14 contributions from the fields of business and management. These articles offer new perspectives on the broad scientific landscape surrounding the future of work. The accepted manuscripts are organized into four primary research areas (remote and hybrid work, digital technologies and organizational practices, sustainable human resource management, and the future of organizations, sectors, and labor markets) and six thematic areas (organizational capabilities and culture, organizational performance, individual features, knowledge management, the dark sides of digitalization, and policy implications). The resulting framework serves as the basis for identifying illustrative research questions to guide future research on the future of work.

Abstract:<p>The changing nature of work and society, and a proliferation of complex global challenges, is increasing the need for systems Human Factors and Ergonomics (HFE). The discipline is well equipped to respond, but there remain a number of longstanding issues preventing systems HFE from realizing its full impact. There is a research–practice gap, a lack of reliability and validity evidence associated with systems HFE methods, and a shortage of methods that can predict behavior. In this article we revisit each issue, with each co‐author providing their own perspective on the extent and causes of each issue, and their resolution. The perspectives reveal a consensus that the issues exist and are problematic but are challenging, multi‐factorial, and require various solutions. The findings are subsequently synthesized to form an agenda for the wider discipline.</p>

A systematic review on the impacts of Covid‐19 on work: Contributions and a path forward from the perspectives of ergonomics and psychodynamics of work

Abstract:<p>Work is a major issue in the discussions on the Covid‐19 pandemic, whose consequences impair the capacities of workers at all organizational levels and impose unexpected challenges on managers. Nevertheless, the scientific literature still lacks an overview of how researchers have been covering the issue. This article presents a systematic review to investigate the impact of Covid‐19 on work and workers of all occupations, reveal research gaps, and help managers to adapt to organizations amid the pandemic. This review is based on a sample of 258 papers from Web of Science and Scopus databases. Quantitative and qualitative analysis indicated a vast majority of studies focused on frontline healthcare workers and a lack of empirical investigation on managers' work. We show how literature has been addressing different aspects of work (e.g., workers' health, working conditions, procedures, protection equipment, remote working, etc.) in the various economic sectors. We discuss the results in light of ergonomics and psychodynamics of work, two disciplines that conceive work and organization as intimately connected, and that can assist managers in meeting the difficulties brought by the pandemic. We highlight that considering the construction of health, interindividual variability, subjective relation to work, supportive workplace environment, and organizational and individual capabilities can play a key role in successfully adapting and transforming organizations in the current scenario.</p>

Abstract:A holistic review of ergonomic history shows that science remains important for general occupational health and safety (OSH), the broad society, culture, politics and the design of everyday things. Science provides an unconventional and multifaceted viewpoint exploring ergonomics from a social, corporate and OSH perspective. Ergonomic solutions from this mindset may redefine the science, and it will change with companies that change within this socially hyper-connected world. Authentic corporate social responsibility will counter 'misleadership' by not approaching ergonomics with an afterthought. The review concludes that ergonomics will be stronger with social respect and ergonomic thinking based on the optimisation of anthropometric data, digital human models, computer-aided tools, self-empowerment, job enrichment, work enlargement, physiology, industrial psychology, cybernetic ergonomics, operations design, ergonomic-friendly process technologies, ergonomic empowerment, behaviour-based safety, outcome-based employee wellness and fatigue risk management solutions, to mention a few.

Abstract:Human Relations, Ahead of Print. New and residual challenges related to digital technology, COVID-19, precarious employment and scientific management are a reminder of research published in the early years of Human Relations that laid the foundation for socio-technical systems theory and its later conceptual offspring, the quality of working life. Analysing the evolution, challenges, legacy and lessons of socio-technical systems and quality of working life, we develop guiding principles for the theoretical development and practical implementation of socio-technical systems and quality of working life for the 21st century. These principles are needed to optimize the benefits of new technology and improve job quality. They would enable an effective and sustained humanization of work through stakeholder involvement, inter-disciplinary partnerships and institutional support, producing positive outcomes for employees and employers as well as wider society.

Abstract:Prolonged treatment (12–24 h) of adipocytes with tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα) stimulates lipolysis. We have investigated the hypothesis that TNFα stimulates lipolysis by blocking the action of endogenous adenosine. Adipocytes were incubated for 48 h with TNFα, and lipolysis was measured in the absence or presence of adenosine deaminase. Without adenosine deaminase, the rate of glycerol release was 2–3-fold higher in the TNFα-treated cells, but with adenosine deaminase lipolysis increased in the controls to approximately that in the TNFα-treated cells. This suggests that TNFα blocks adenosine release or prevents its antilipolytic effect. Both N6 -phenylisopropyl adenosine and nicotinic acid were less potent and efficacious inhibitors of lipolysis in treated cells. A decrease in the concentration of α-subunits of all three Gi subtypes was detected by Western blotting without a change in Gsproteins or β-subunits. Gi2α was about 50% of control, whereas Gi1α and Gi3α were about 20 and 40% of control values, respectively. The time course of Gidown-regulation correlated with the stimulation of lipolysis. Furthermore, down-regulation of Gi by an alternative approach (prolonged incubation withN6 -phenylisopropyl adenosine) stimulated lipolysis. These findings indicate that TNFα stimulates lipolysis by blunting endogenous inhibition of lipolysis. The mechanism appears to be a Gi protein down-regulation.

Abstract:Environmental institutions are realising that the human-nature relationship is a tangible target for a sustainable future. Societal change of that relationship is a challenge involving modifications to both systems and human behaviours. We argue that as Human Factors and Ergonomics (HFE) focusses on relationships, interfaces and systems it is well placed to contribute. After introducing the state of HFE and nature connectedness science an analysis of areas of HFE and human-nature connectedness themes is used to consider current work and future opportunities. We conclude that despite decades-old calls to action, HFE is embedded in a dated paradigm and has had little positive contribution to the human-nature relationship. However, HFE is well placed to create sustainable communities, designed to create a new relationship with nature. To do this, HFE needs to recognise that it should move on from solely fitting the task to the human, to refitting the human to nature.Practitioner Summary: A more sustainable human-nature relationship can be achieved through applying HFE approaches. Abstract:This research aims to present a synopsis of four eminent theoretical concepts that scholars have expended to help understand how digitalisation has changed the workplace as we used to know it. The research is based on a conceptual approach. It aims to critically synthesise the relevant literature as the principal methodology for analysing work in the selected four research domains where the perspective on digital work is most controversial. The study shows two central chronicles that have emerged due to workplace digitalisation - utopian and dystopian perspectives. The research sheds light on controversial discourses regarding changing nature of work in the digital era, particularly concerning work polarisation, non-standard employment, unemployment and platform work. The study also provides guidelines for change that help minimise the dark side and harm to the worker of digitalisation by developing appropriate capabilities for the new digital environment.

Abstract:This paper, the first in a three-part Series on work and health, provides a narrative review of research into work as a social determinant of health over the past 25 years, the key emerging challenges in this field, and the implications of these challenges for future research. By use of a conceptual framework for work as a social determinant of health, we identified six emerging challenges: (1) the influence of technology on the nature of work in high-income countries, culminating in the sudden shift to telework during the COVID-19 pandemic; (2) the intersectionality of work with gender, sexual orientation, age, race, ethnicity, migrant status, and socioeconomic status as codeterminants of health disparities; (3) the arrival in many Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development countries of large migrant labour workforces, who are often subject to adverse working conditions and social exclusion; (4) the development of precarious employment as a feature of many national labour markets; (5) the phenomenon of working long and irregular hours with potential health consequences; and (6) the looming threat of climate change's effects on work. We conclude that profound changes in the nature and availability of work over the past few decades have led to widespread new psychosocial and physical exposures that are associated with adverse health outcomes and contribute to increasing disparities in health. These new exposures at work will require novel and creative methods of data collection for monitoring of their potential health impacts to protect the workforce, and for new research into better means of occupational health promotion and protection. There is also an urgent need for a better integration of occupational health within public health, medicine, the life sciences, and the social sciences, with the work environment explicitly conceptualised as a major social determinant of health.

Abstract:Since the establishment of the Gender and Work Technical Committee (TC) of the International Ergonomics Association (IEA) in 2006, many researchers have addressed the role of sex and gender in ergonomics, producing a great deal of new information. This special issue aims to present new ways of viewing women's work and gender differences in work-related injury risks in an era of rapidly changing labour market configurations. It offers innovative methods for integrating sex and gender into ergonomic analysis and for designing work environments. It shares reflections on the intersection of vulnerabilities according to certain identity markers. Finally, it contributes to establishing milestones standards of practice so that the consideration of sex and gender can be more systematically modelled in ergonomics research and interventions, for example, in training ergonomists or in knowledge transfer initiatives.Practitioner summary: This editorial article provides an overview of the background and the content of the Special Issue 'Gender and Work in Ergonomics: Recent trends'.

Abstract:The ‘future of work’ is a concept that has been used to describe the era of rapid automation and adoption of advanced technologies in industries and businesses. This ongoing advancement has resulted in concerns around job displacement, skill obsolescence, increased income and gender disparity, and how human and artificial intelligence would co-exist and shape the world. Although several research studies have explored these aspects in isolation of other factors, no attempt has been made to comprehensively map the research field so far. In this paper, we conduct a bibliometric analysis of 205 papers which appear in top business, economics, and management journals from 2000 to 2022. Biblioshiny, a web-based application included in the Bibliometrix package was used for the purposes of analysis. The software helped identify influential journals, authors, countries, articles, and themes. Additionally, network analysis helped map the conceptual, intellectual, and social structure of the shortlisted papers. We further develop a future research agenda for understanding technological change and ensuing labour market, skill set shifts. This paper and its findings contribute to the literature by offering a scientometric and systematic way to review ‘future of work’ and its impact on employee skill needs.

Abstract:In this paper, we argue that adopting a human-centred approach to human resource management (HRM) will contribute to building sustainable workforces, organizations, communities and societies against a backdrop of a global pandemic and political and economic uncertainty. The economic and social cost of the pandemic will continue to be felt for years to come, and the road to recovery should be human-centred and sustainable, with built-in climate actions as part of the socio-economic rejuvenation programme. We draw on several cross-cutting themes to illustrate how the use of digital technology and how remote working, for example, may impact workers from different socio-economic backgrounds in diverse ways. We call for researchers to engage in in-depth qualitative research to identify new phenomena related to work and HRM in the context of accelerating adoption of digital technology and post-Covid recovery to explore power dynamics and forms of exclusion in the labour market and workplaces. Findings of these studies can contribute to positive policy actions to prevent the exacerbation of existing socio-economic inequality and exclusion. They will also contribute to new ways of conceptualizing HRM models and practices and extending HRM theories.
