Transformation semigroups and their applications

Abstract:In this chapter we present transformation semigroups and their applications. We begin with Klein's approach to geometry based on invariants of transformation groups. Then we present symmetry groups in chemistry and in classical mechanics. Next we introduce one-parameter semigroups of transformations and their applications in ergodic theory. Our main subject are one-parameter semigroups of operators, in particular stochastic semigroups. We present general results on their existence and long-time behaviour. We also give examples of one-parameter semigroups related to Markov chains, diffusion and processes with jumps. We focus on the applications of semigroups of operators in biology. Among other things, we study models of: DNA evolution; growth of erythrocyte population; gene expression; cell cycle; the movement of bacteria and insects. We also consider models with stochastic noise and different population models.

Abstract:Most dynamical systems arise from partial differential equations (PDEs) that can be represented as an abstract evolution equation on a suitable state space complemented by an initial or final condition. Thus, the system can be written as a Cauchy problem on an abstract function space with appropriate topological structures. To study the qualitative and quantitative properties of the solutions, the theory of one-parameter operator semigroups is a most powerful tool. This approach has been used by many authors and applied to quite different fields, e.g. ordinary and PDEs, nonlinear dynamical systems, control theory, functional differential and Volterra equations, mathematical physics, mathematical biology, stochastic processes. The present special issue of Philosophical Transactions includes papers on semigroups and their applications. This article is part of the theme issue ‘Semigroup applications everywhere’.

Abstract:Let C be a closed subset of a complete metric space. In this paper we study the stability problem for some iteration processes that approximate stationary points of pointwise Lipschitzian semigroups of nonlinear mappings acting within C . We show that a large class of well-controlled processes is stable under summable errors. These results are then applied to the stability of some known processes including the generalized Krasnosel'skii-Mann and the two-step Ishikawa iteration processes.

Abstract:For stochastic $C_0$-semigroups on $L^1$-spaces there is wealth of results that show strong convergence to an equilibrium as $t \to \infty$, given that the semigroup contains a partial integral operator. This has plenty of applications to transport equations and in mathematical biology. However, up to now partial integral operators do not play a prominent role in theorems which yield uniform convergence of the semigroup rather than only strong convergence. In this article we prove that, for irreducible stochastic semigroups, uniform convergence to an equilibrium is actually equivalent to being partially integral and uniformly mean ergodic. In addition to this Tauberian theorem, we also show that our semigroup is uniformly convergent if and only if it is partially integral and the dual semigroup satisfies a certain irreducibility condition. Our proof is based on a uniform version of a lower bound theorem of Lasota and Yorke, which we combine with various techniques from Banach lattice theory.

Abstract:Using techniques of the theory of semigroups of linear operators we study the question of approximating solutions to equations governing diffusion in thin layers separated by a semi-permeable membrane. We show that as thickness of the layers converges to $0$, the solutions, which by nature are functions of $3$ variables, gradually lose dependence on the vertical variable and thus may be regarded as functions of $2$ variables. The limit equation describes diffusion on the lower and upper sides of a two-dimensional surface (the membrane) with jumps from one side to the other. The latter possibility is expressed as an additional term in the generator of the limit semigroup, and this term is build from permeability coefficients of the membrane featuring in the transmission conditions of the approximating equations (i.e., in the description of the domains of the generators of the approximating semigroups). We prove this convergence result in the spaces of square integrable and continuous functions, and study the way the choice of transmission conditions influences the limit.

Abstract:We develop a general, functional calculus approach to approximation of $C_0$-semigroups on Banach spaces by bounded completely monotone functions of their generators. The approach comprises most of well-known approximation formulas, yields optimal convergence rates, and sometimes even leads to sharp constants. In an important particular case when semigroups are holomorphic, we are able to significantly improve our results for general semigroups. Moreover, we present several second order approximation formulas with rates, which in such a general form appear in the literature for the first time.

Abstract:The spectral theory of semigroup generators is a crucial tool for analysing the asymptotic properties of operator semigroups. Typically, Tauberian theorems, such as the ABLV theorem, demand extensive information about the spectrum to derive convergence results. However, the scenario is significantly simplified for positive semigroups on Banach lattices. This observation extends to the broader class of eventually positive semigroups -- a phenomenon observed in various concrete differential equations. In this paper, we investigate the spectral and asymptotic properties of eventually positive semigroups, focusing particularly on the persistently irreducible case. Our findings expand upon the existing theory of eventual positivity, offering new insights into the cyclicity of the peripheral spectrum and asymptotic trends. Notably, several arguments for positive operators and semigroups do not apply in our context, necessitating the use of ultrapower arguments to circumvent these challenges.

Abstract:The notions of Lipschitz conditions with L average are introduced to the study of convergence analysis of Gauss–Newton’s method for singular systems of equations. Unified convergence criteria ensuring the convergence of Gauss–Newton’s method for one kind of singular systems of equations with constant rank derivatives are established and unified estimates of radii of convergence balls are also obtained. Applications to some special cases such as the Kantorovich type conditions, γ-conditions and the Smale point estimate theory are provided and some important known results are extended and/or improved.
Semi-linear evolution equations via positive semigroups

Abstract:We study semi-linear evolutionary problems where the linear part is the generator of a positive $C_0$-semigroup. The non-linear part is assumed to be quasi-increasing. Given an initial value in between a sub- and a super-solution of the stationary problem we find a solution of the semi-linear evolutionary problem. Convergence as $t\to\infty$ is also studied for the solutions. Our results are applied to the logistic equation with diffusion, to a Lotka-Volterra competition model and the Fisher equation from population genetics.

On almost convergence on locally compact abelian groups

Abstract:We study a summability method called almost convergence for bounded measurable functions defined on a locally compact abelian group. We define almost convergence using topologically invariant means and exhibit two different kinds of necessary and sufficient conditions, one is analytic and the other is functional analytic, for a given function to be almost convergent. As an application, we show complex Tauberian theorems for almost convergence on the integers and the real numbers. In particular, the latter one can be viewed as an analogue of the Wiener-Ikehara theorem.

Abstract:This paper studies the asymptotic behavior of several continuous-time dynamical systems which are analogs of ant colony optimization algorithms that solve shortest path problems. Local asymptotic stability of the equilibrium corresponding to the shortest path is shown under mild assumptions. A complete study is given for a recently proposed model called EigenAnt: global asymptotic stability is shown, and the speed of convergence is calculated explicitly and shown to be proportional to the difference between the reciprocals of the second shortest and the shortest paths.

Abstract:We provide explicit convergence rates for Chernoff-type approximations of convex monotone semigroups which have the form $S(t)f=\lim_{n\to\infty}I(\frac{t}{n})^n f$ for bounded continuous functions $f$. Under suitable conditions on the one-step operators $I(t)$ regarding the time regularity and consistency of the approximation scheme, we obtain $\|S(t)f-I(\frac{t}{n})^n f\|_\infty\leq cn^{-\gamma}$ for bounded Lipschitz continuous functions $f$, where $c\geq 0$ and $\gamma>0$ are determined explicitly. Moreover, the mapping $t\mapsto S(t)f$ is Hölder continuous. These results are closely related to monotone approximation schemes for viscosity solutions but are obtained independently by following a recently developed semigroup approach to Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations which uniquely characterizes semigroups via their $\Gamma$-generators. The different approach allows to consider convex rather than sublinear equations and the results can be extended to unbounded functions by modifying the norm with a suitable weight function. Furthermore, up to possibly different consistency errors for the operators $I(t)$, the upper and lower bound for the error between the semigroup and the iterated operators are symmetric. The abstract results are applied to Nisio semigroups and limit theorems for convex expectations.

Abstract:We study properties of a piecewise deterministic Markov process modeling the changes in concentration of specific antibodies. The evolution of densities of the process is described by a stochastic semigroup. The long-time behaviour of this semigroup is studied. In particular we prove theorems on its asymptotic stability.

Abstract:This work focuses on the study of approximation properties of functions by Szász type operators involving Frobenius–Euler–Simsek-type polynomials, which have become more popular recently because of their special characteristics and functional organization. The convergence properties such as uniformly convergence and pointwise convergence in terms of modulus of continuity and Peetre-$ \it K $ functional are investigated with the help of these sequences of operators in depth. This paper also includes the estimation of the error of the approximation of these sequences of operators to some particular class of functions. The estimates are depicted using the Maple scientific computing program and presented in tables.

Abstract:The object of this paper is to establish the relation between stability and convergence of the numerical methods for the evolution equation u(t) - Au - f(u) = g(t) on Banach space V, and to prove the long-time error estimates for the approximation solutions. At first, we give the definition of long-time stability, and then prove the fact that stability and compatibility imply the uniform convergence on the infinite time region. Thus, we establish a general frame in order to prove the long-time convergence. This frame includes finite element methods and finite difference methods of the evolution equations, especially the semilinear parabolic and hyperbolic partial differential equations. As applications of these results we prove the estimates obtained by Larsson [5] and Sanz-serna and Stuart [6].

Abstract:In this work, we revisit the Krein-Rutman theory for semigroups of positive operators in a Banach lattice framework and we provide some very general, efficient and handy results with constructive estimates about: the existence of a solution to the first eigentriplet problem; the geometry of the principal eigenvalue problem; the asymptotic stability of the first eigenvector with possible constructive rate of convergence.This abstract theory is motivated and illustrated by several examples of differential, intro-differential and integral operators. In particular, we revisit the first eigenvalue problem and the asymptotic stability of the first eigenvector for: some parabolic equations in a bounded domain and in the whole space; some transport equations in a bounded or unbounded domain, including some growth-fragmentationmodels and some kinetic models; the kinetic Fokker-Planck equation in the torus and in the whole space; some mutation-selection models.
