Abstract:Dissolved Mn(III) species have recently been recognized as a significant form of Mn in redox transition zones, but their speciation, stability, and reactivity are poorly understood. Besides acting as the intermediate for Mn redox chemistry, Mn(III) can undergo disproportionation producing insoluble Mn oxides and aqueous Mn(II). Using pyrophosphate(PP) as a model ligand, we evaluated the thermodynamic and kinetic stability of Mn(III) complexes. They were stable at circumneutral pH and were prone to (partial) disproportionation at acidic or basic pH. With an initial lag phase, the kinetics of Mn(III)-PP disproportionation was autocatalytic with the produced Mn oxides promoting the disproportionation. X-ray diffraction and the average Mn oxidation state indicated that the solid products were not pure Mn(IV) oxides but a mixture of triclinic birnessite and δ-MnO2. Addition of synthetic analogs of the precipitates eliminated the lag phase, confirming their catalytic roles. Thermodynamic calculations adequately predicted the stability regime of Mn(III)-PP. The present results refined the constant for Mn(PP)25- formation, which allows a consistent and quantitative prediction of equilibrium speciation of Mn(III)-Mn(II)-birnessite with PP. A simple and robust model, which incorporated the thermodynamic constraints, autocatalytic rate law, and verified reaction stoichiometry, successfully simulated all kinetic data.

Abstract:The permanganate (Mn(VII)) oxidation has emerged as a promising technology for the remediation and treatment of the groundwater and surface water contaminated with the organic compounds. Nonetheless, only a few studies have been conducted to explore the role of the heavy metals (especially the redox-active ones) during the Mn(VII) oxidation process. In this study, taking Pb(II) as an example, its influence on the Mn(VII) decontamination performance has been extensively investigated. It was found that, with the presence of Pb(II), Mn(VII) could degrade diclofenac (DCF), 2,4-dichlorophenol, and aniline more effectively than without. For instance, over a wide pH range of 4.5–8.0, the dosing of 10 µmol/L Pb(II) accelerated the DCF removal rate from 0.006–0.25 min−1 to 0.05–0.46 min−1 with a promotion factor of 1.9–9.4. Although the UV-vis spectroscopic and high resolution transmission electron microscopy analyses suggested that Mn(VII) could react with Pb(II) to produce Mn(IV) and Pb(IV) at pH 6.0–8.0, further experiments revealed that Pb(II) did not exert its enhancing effect through promoting the generation of MnO2, as the reactivity of MnO2 was poor under the employed pH range. At pH below 5.0, it was interesting to find that, a negligible amount of MnO2 was formed in the Mn(VII)/Pb(II) system in the absence of contaminants, while once MnO2 was generated in the presence of contaminants, it could catalyze the Pb(II) oxidation to Pb(IV) by Mn(VII). Collectively, by highlighting the conversion process of Pb(II) to Pb(IV) by either Mn(VII) or MnO2, the reactive Pb(III) intermediates were proposed to account for the Pb(II) enhancement effect.

Abstract:Although Mn(III) complexes with organic ligands have been previously identified, the information about their stability and reactivity is scarce. In the present study, we analyzed the formation and stability of three different complexes: Mn(III)-citrate, Mn(III)-tartrate, and Mn(III)-humic acid (HA), as well as their reactivity toward an element of high environmental concern, lead (Pb).Our results indicate that the stability of studied complexes is highly dependent on pH. The Mn(III) complexes with citrate and tartrate degrade below pH 8, due to the electron transfer reaction between Mn(III) and the ligand, while the Mn(III)-HA complex’s degradation is slower and less sensitive to pH. At pH 4, less than 40% of the initial Mn(III)-HA was found to be stable.The reactivity of the complexes was different depending on the ligand and its concentration. The Mn(III)-citrate and Mn(III)-tartrate complexes effectively reduced PbO2 and releases aqueous Pb2+, although significant differences were found with increasing ligand concentration. There was no evidence of the reduction of PbO2 by Mn(III) when it forms a complex with HA. This is likely due to the large size of HA moieties that prevent the Mn(III) component of the complex from getting close enough to the PbO2 surface to initiate electron transfer and lead to the reduction of Pb(IV) by HA itself.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:The formation of manganese oxides in nature is commonly mediated by microorganisms. In this study, the mineralization of biogenic manganese oxidation mediated by Pseudomanas putida has been experimentally investigated by employing various characterization techniques, including SEM, FESEM, TEM, XRD, and STXM-NEXAFS. The results indicate that Mn2+ ions can be oxidized into Mn (IV) minerals (birnessite and pyrolusite) and Mn(III) minerals (hausmannite and feitknechtite), successively. The primary products (birnessite and pyrolusite) further transformed into hausmannite and feitknechtite under Mn2+ ion-enriched conditions. However, birnessite and pyrolusite are the end-products of the continuous microbial oxidation processes. These biogenic Mn oxides are poorly crystallized, which provides them with a high potential for usage in environmental restoration of contaminated soils and waters contaminated with heavy metals. The approaches employed in this study will also enrich genesis research of biological oxidation of Mn(II) species in nature.

Abstract:The oxidative dissolution of As from arsenopyrite, one important arsenic mineral in reducing conditions, poses an environmental hazard to natural aquatic systems. The dissolution of arsenopyrite occurs slowly due to the surface precipitates of iron oxides in circumneutral oxic environments. However, the presence of natural ligands and coexisting metals may change the release of Fe species, which would be of critical importance to the dissolution of arsenopyrite. Here, we investigated the oxidative dissolution of arsenopyrite induced by pyrophosphate (PP) and dissolved Mn(III) species as a natural occurring Mn species with strong complexation affinity to PP. With the presence of PP, the formation of Fe(II)-PP complexes and its rapid oxidation to dissolved Fe(III)-PP species resulted in a substantial increase in the generation of hydroxyl radicals (center dot OH) under ambient dark conditions, contributing to faster dissolution of arsenopyrite and higher percentage of As(V) in the dissolved products. Dissolved Mn(III), though considered as an extra oxidant besides oxygen, unexpectedly acted as a radical scavenger for center dot OH and inhibited the production of As(V). Moreover, the oxidation of sulfur species differed in the two systems as significant formation of thiosulfate was observed with the presence of PP, which did not occur in the system with dissolved Mn(III). Overall, the effects of dissolved Mn(III) and PP on the dissolution of arse-nopyrite and the subsequent transformation of Fe, As and S species have important implications for disentangling the interactions among these metastable elements, and for assessing their transport and environmental impacts in aquatic systems.
Stable Incorporation of MnOx Quantum Dots into N-doped Hollow Carbon: A Synergistic Peroxymonosulfate Activator for Enhanced Removal of Bisphenol A

Abstract:Manganese oxide (MnO)x with earth-abundance and low toxicity have received considerable interest for advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) but suffer from poor catalytic activity and stability. Herein, a unique hybrid hollow structure with ultrasmall size MnOx quantum dots (QDs, 3 nm) homogeneously dispersed on N-doped porous carbon shells (denoted as MnOx/N-HPCS) was designed as heterogeneous Fenton-like catalyst. The ultrafine nanoscaling morphology of MnOx QDs enlarges its specific surface area (227.9 m(2)/g) for providing more active sites. The N-doped carbon (NC) shells can not only greatly improve the conductivity of the hybrid and effectively prevent the aggregation of MnOx QDs, but serve as metal-free active sites for Fenton-like reaction. While the hollow porous structure enables the fast transportation of reactants access to the full-exposure active sites. When evaluated as catalyst for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation, the MnOx/N-HPCS hybrid outperformed other benchmark catalysts toward the removal of bisphenol A (BPA) with highest removal rate of 0.29 min(-1). Results showed that exceed 99% of BPA (10 mg L-1) was removed within 20 min at the dosage of 0.2 g L-1 PMS and 0.06 g L-1 MnOx/N-HPCS. Moreover, the mechanism of PMS activation by MnOx/N-HPCS was studied. The mixed valence states of Mn, the hydroxyl species induced complexation of equivalent to Mn((3+/4+))-PMS and the metal-free N-doped sites synergistically enhancing the generation of reactive oxygen species ((OH)-O-. and SO4.-). Furthermore, the MnOx/N-HPCS catalyst also displayed good reusability (successive 4 runs) with negligible Mn leaching (less than 2 mu g L-1). Together with the investigation of the application in real environment water samples (such as tap water and wastewater), we demonstrated this novel Mn-based AOPs catalyst with unique structure and high activity will hold great potential in environmental remediation.
Oxidative dissolution of Sb2O3 mediated by surface Mn redox cycling in oxic aquatic systems

Abstract:Antimony trioxide (Sb2O3) is one of the primary forms of Sb in the environment, and its dissolution significantly impacts the migration and bioavailability of Sb. However, the dissolution of Sb2O3 coupled with abiotic redox of Mn processes is unclear. Here, we investigated the kinetics of Sb2O3 dissolution in the presence of the ubiquitous Mn(II) by kinetic experiments, spectroscopies, density functional theory calculations and the chemical kinetic modeling. The oxidative dissolution of Sb2O3 was catalyzed by Mn(II) through the in-situ generated amorphous Mn oxides (MnOx) under oxic conditions, during which the generation of Mn(III) is a critical step in Sb(V) release. The released Sb(V) was partially retained on MnOx through bidentate-binuclear (corner-sharing) complexes as revealed by extended X-ray absorption fine structure analysis. The coexistent morphological forms of Sb2O3, i.e., senarmontite and valentinite exhibited distinct dissolution patterns. Valentinite showed higher activity in catalyzing Mn(II) oxidation and faster oxidative dissolution than senarmontite, due to its higher surface energy and lower conduction band minimum of its exposed facets. These abiotic processes can extrapolate to other metal(loid)s (hydr)oxides, further supplying for the comprehensive understanding of the redox transformation of Mn.
Oxidative Dissolution of Orpiment and Realgar Induced by Dissolved and Solid Mn(III) Species

Abstract:A thorough understanding of the complex redox coupling among manganese, arsenic, sulfur and oxygen in subsurface environments is still obscured by their metastable intermediate valances and speciation. Arsenic sulfide minerals may be disturbed by natural or anthropogenic activities, and encounter oxidants such as oxygen and reactive trivalent Mn species, and how these abiotic interactions impact the mineral dissolution and transformation of arsenic and sulfur species, remains unknown. In this study, we investigated the effects of dissolved Mn(III) and manganite (γ-MnIIIOOH) on the dissolution behaviors of orpiment (As2S3) and realgar (AsS) under anoxic and oxic conditions. Complementary control experiments were also performed with dissolved arsenite without reduced sulfur. Oxygen, dissolved Mn(III) or manganite did not induce the oxidation of dissolved arsenite within several weeks. Orpiment’s initial dissolution is a non-redox process releasing of arsenite and sulfide, and the three above oxidants promoted the dissolution of orpiment by rapid oxidation of dissolved sulfide. However, only when both dissolved Mn(III) and dissolved oxygen were present, substantial accumulation of arsenate and sulfate were observed. These results suggested the critical role of sulfur species in abiotic arsenic transformation and a synergetic effect of Mn and oxygen on sulfur oxidation. In contrast to orpiment, the dissolution of realgar was a redox reaction that involved the oxidation of As(II) to As(III) and the direct releasing of sulfide, which could be promoted by both dissolved oxygen and manganite. The effect of dissolved Mn(III) and oxygen on the formation of arsenate and sulfate was also clearly observed during the dissolution of realgar. Despite of the slow abiotic oxidation of dissolved arsenite to arsenate in the presence dissolved Mn(III) and oxygen, the coexistence of sulfide could enable rapid accumulation of arsenate, accompanied by substantial transformation to sulfate. The evidence of thioarsenic species in these experiments provided a plausible explanation as an alternative pathway for the oxidation of the two elements by dissolved Mn(III). These results provide new insights for the Mn-As-S cycling in redox transition environments.
Solutions for an efficient arsenite oxidation and removal from groundwater containing ferrous iron

Abstract:Manganese (Mn) oxides are extensively used to oxidize As(III) present in ground, drinking, and waste waters to the less toxic and more easily removable As(V). The common presence of multiple other cations in natural waters, and more especially of redox-sensitive ones such as Fe 2+ , may however significantly hamper As(III) oxidation and its subsequent removal. The present work investigates experimentally the influence of Mn(III) chelating agents on As(III) oxidation process in such environmentally relevant complex systems. Specifically, the influence of sodium pyrophosphate (PP), an efficient Mn(III) chelating agent, on As(III) oxidation by birnessite in the presence of Fe(II) was investigated using batch experiments at circum-neutral pH. In the absence of PP, competitive oxidation of Fe(II) and As(III) leads to Mn oxide surface passivation by Fe(III) and Mn(II/III) (oxyhydr)oxides, thus inhibiting As(III) oxidation. Addition of PP to the system highly enhances As(III) oxidation by birnessite even in the presence of Fe(II). PP presence prevents passivation of Mn oxide surfaces keeping As and Fe species in solution while lower valence Mn species are released to solution. In addition, reactive oxygen species (ROS), tentatively identified as hydroxyl radicals (•OH), are generated under aerobic conditions through oxygen activation by Fe(II)–PP complexes, enhancing As(III) oxidation further. The positive influence of Mn(III) chelating agents on As(III) oxidation most likely not only depend on their affinity for Mn(III) but also on their ability to promote formation of these active radical species. Finally, removal of As(V) through sorption to Fe (oxyhydr)oxides is efficient even in the presence of significant concentrations of PP, and addition of such Mn(III) chelating agents thus appears as an efficient way to enhance the oxidizing activity of birnessite in large-scale treatment for arsenic detoxification of groundwaters.

Abstract:Pseudomonas putida MnB1 is one typical kind of Mn oxidizing bacteria,existing in both freshwater and soil.This paper investigated the kinetics of Mn oxidation by P.putida MnB1 and characterized the properties of biogenic Mn oxides.The K-edge XANES result showed that Mn2+ was oxidized to Mn(Ⅳ).XRD data further indicated that the primary biogenic oxide wasδ-MnO2,a fine particulate phyllomanganate.Mn oxidation was influenced by heavy metal ions,of which the influence of Cd is most significant and Cu is least.In the presence of Cd2+(4μM)or Pb2+(6μM)or Cu2+(200μM)or Ni2+(20μM),the oxidizing capacities and oxidizing rates decreased significantly;the concentrations of Mn(IV)oxidized by P.putida MnB1decreased from 208.5μM to 20.3μM,192.5μM,129.5μM and 52.7μM respectively.
Antimony Oxidation and Adsorption by In-Situ Formed Biogenic Mn Oxide and Fe-Mn Oxides

Abstract:Antimony (Sb), which can be toxic at relatively low concentrations, may co-exist with Mn(II) and/or Fe(II) in some groundwater and surface water bodies. Here we investigated the potential oxidation and adsorption pathways of Sb (III and V) species in the presence of Mn(II) and Mn-oxidizing bacteria, with or without Fe(II). Batch experiments were conducted to determine the oxidation and adsorption characteristics of Sb species in the presence of biogenic Mn oxides (BMOs), which were formed in-situ via the oxidation of Mn(II) by a Mn-oxidizing bacterium (Pseudomonas sp. QJX-1). Results indicated that Sb(III) ions could be oxidized to Sb(V) ions by BMO, but only Sb(V) originating from Sb(III) oxidation was adsorbed effectively by BMO. Introduced Fe(II) was chemically oxidized to FeOOH, the precipitates of which mixed with BMO to form a new compound, biogenic Fe–Mn oxides (BFMO). The BMO part of the BFMO mainly oxidized and the FeOOH of the BFMO mainly adsorbed the Sb species. In aquatic solutions containing both As(III) and Sb(III), the BFMO that formed in-situ preferentially oxidized Sb over As but adsorbed As more efficiently. Chemical analysis and reverse transcription real-time polymerase chain reaction revealed that the presence of Fe(II), As(III) and Sb(III) accelerated the oxidation of Mn(II) but inhibited the activity of Mn-oxidizing bacteria. These results provide significant insights into the biogeochemical pathways of Sb, Mn(II) in aquatic ecosystems, with or without Fe(II).
Uraninite Oxidation and Dissolution Induced by Manganese Oxide: A Redox Reaction Between Two Insoluble Minerals

Abstract:The longevity of subsurface U(IV) produced by reduction of U(VI) during in situ bioremediation can be limited by reoxidation to more mobile U(VI) species. Coupling of the biogeochemical cycles of U and Mn may affect the fate and transport of uranium. Manganese oxides can act as a powerful oxidant that accelerates the oxidative dissolution of UO2. This study investigated the physical and chemical factors controlling the interaction between UO2 and MnO2, which are both poorly soluble minerals. A multi-chamber reactor with a permeable membrane was used to eliminate direct contact of the two minerals while still allowing transport of aqueous species. The oxidation of UO2 was not significantly enhanced by MnO2 if the two solids were physically separated. Complete mixing of MnO2 with UO2 led to a much greater extent and rate of U oxidation. When direct contact is not possible, the reaction slowly progresses through release of soluble U(IV) with its adsorption and oxidation on MnO2. Continuously-stirred tank reactors (CSTRs) were used to quantify the steady-state rates of UO2 dissolution induced by MnO2. MnO2 dramatically promoted UO2 dissolution, but the degree of promotion leveled off once the MnO2:UO2 ratio exceeded a critical value. Substantial amounts of U(VI) and Mn(II) were retained on MnO2 surfaces. The total production of Mn(II) was less than that of U(VI), indicating that the fate of Mn products and their impact on UO2–MnO2 reaction kinetics were complicated and may involve formation of Mn(III) phases. At higher dissolved inorganic carbon concentrations, UO2 oxidation by MnO2 was faster and less U(VI) was adsorbed to MnO2. Such an inverse relationship suggested that U(VI) may passivate MnO2 surfaces. A conceptual model was developed to describe the oxidation rate of UO2 by MnO2. This model is potentially applicable to a broad range of water chemistry conditions and is relevant to other environmental redox processes involving two poorly soluble minerals.
The role of biogenic Fe-Mn oxides formed in situ for arsenic oxidation and adsorption in aquatic ecosystems

Abstract:As(III&V), Mn(II), and Fe(II) may occur simultaneously in some groundwater and surface water. Studying their redox reactions and interactions is essential to unravel the biogeochemical cycles of these metal ions in aquatic ecosystems and to find effective methods to remove them simultaneously in drinking water treatment. Here, the formation of biogenic Fe-Mn oxides (BFMO, defined as a mixture of biogenic Mn oxide (BMO) and Fe oxide) as well as its oxidation and adsorption of As in a Fe(II)-Mn(II)-As(III&V)-Mn-oxidizing microbe (Pseudomonas sp. QJX-1) system were investigated. Batch experiments and structure characterization revealed that the BFMO was formed via a sequential precipitation of Fe oxide and BMO. The first formed Fe oxide was identified as FeOOH (lepidocrocite) and the latter formed BMO was identified as MnO2 (similar to hexagonal birnessite). In the BFMO mixture, the BMO part was mainly responsible for As(III) oxidation, and the Fe oxide part dominated As adsorption. Remarkably, the BMO could oxidize Fe(II) to form FeOOH, which may improve As adsorption. The optimum Mn(II)/Fe(II) ratio for As removal was approximately 1:3 (mol/mol). Taken together, in Fe(II)-Mn(II)-As(III&V)-Mn-oxidizing microbe ecosystems, the in situ formation of BFMO could eliminate or decrease Fe(II), Mn(II), and As(III&V) species simultaneously. Therefore, based on this study, new approaches may be developed for As removal from water containing high concentrations of Fe(II) and Mn(II).

Both manganese (Mn) and iron (Fe), sensitive to redox conditions, own strong affinity for P. Numerous works have demonstrated that Fe was a key factor to drive P cycle in sediments. However, the role of Mn on P mobilization remains largely unexplored. Herein, the mechanism of P mobilization driven by Mn were investigated in a seasonal anoxic reservoir. Diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) results, from both field investigations and laboratory incubations, showed P was synchronously distributed and significantly positive correlated (r2 ≥ 0.40, p < 0.01) with Mn, suggested that P cycle was associated with Mn. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results showed that in the outer layers at the top 1 cm sediment pellet the contents of Mn and P occurred significantly synchronize changed, while that of Fe remains virtually unchanged when oxygen conditions changed. This demonstrated that Mn is likely to be the key factor affect P cycle. Most importantly, the relative content of Mn(III) changed the most (≈20 %) interpreted that Mn(III) is the key Mn species dominants the P mobilization. Furthermore, Dual-Beam scanning electron microscope (DB-SEM) maps clearly showed the co-enrichment of P and Mn in oxic sediments, confirmed P was mainly hosted by Mn minerals. In contrast, the random distributions and weak or negative correlations between P and Fe implied that P cycle was decouple with Fe, this resulted from that Fe was almost deposited as inert Fe fractions (>99.2 %) in reducing sediments. This study significantly expanded our knowledge on the geochemical behavior of P influenced by Mn in aquatic sediments.
Oxidative UO2 Dissolution Induced by Soluble Mn(III).

Abstract:The stability of UO2 is critical to the success of reductive bioremediation of uranium. When reducing conditions are no longer maintained, Mn redox cycling may catalytically mediate the oxidation of UO2 and remobilization of uranium. Ligand-stabilized soluble Mn(III) was recently recognized as an important redox-active intermediate in Mn biogeochemical cycling. This study evaluated the kinetics of oxidative UO2 dissolution by soluble Mn(III) stabilized by pyrophosphate (PP) and desferrioxamine B (DFOB). The Mn(III)-PP complex was a potent oxidant that induced rapid UO2 dissolution at a rate higher than that by a comparable concentration of dissolved O2. However, the Mn(III)-DFOB complex was not able to induce oxidative dissolution of UO2. The ability of Mn(III) complexes to oxidize UO2 was probably determined by whether the coordination of Mn(III) with ligands allowed the attachment of the complexes to the UO2 surface to facilitate electron transfer. Systematic investigation into the kinetics of UO2 oxidative dissolution by the Mn(III)-PP complex suggested that Mn(III) could directly oxidize UO2 without involving particulate Mn species (e.g., MnO2). The expected 2:1 reaction stoichiometry between Mn(III) and UO2 was observed. The reactivity of soluble Mn(III) in oxidizing UO2 was higher at lower ratios of pyrophosphate to Mn(III) and lower pH, which is probably related to differences in the ligand-to-metal ratio and/or protonation states of the Mn(III)-pyrophosphate complexes. Disproportionation of Mn(III)-PP occurred at pH 9.0, and the oxidation of UO2 was then driven by both MnO2 and soluble Mn(III). Kinetic models were derived that provided excellent fits of the experimental results.

Abstract:Manganese oxides have been proven to be promising adsorbents to capture Pb(II) from wastewaters. In nature, MnO2 can be found in different crystalline structures, while the effect of crystal structure on their adsorption performance remains unclear. In this study, five manganese oxides with different crystallographic phases, alpha-, beta-, gamma-, delta-, and lambda-MnO2 were prepared and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), N-2 adsorption-desorption, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and zeta potential measurements. The adsorptive removal of aqueous Pb(II) was investigated using these manganese oxides as adsorbents. The results showed that the adsorption capacities of manganese oxides for Pb(II) varied with BET surface area and crystalline structure, following the order of delta-MnO2 > alpha-MnO2 > lambda-MnO2 > gamma-MnO2 > beta-MnO2. delta-MnO2 displayed the highest capacity for Pb(II), and the adsorption was scarcely influenced by the presence of the coexisting Na+ cation. The surface complexation model was used to describe the Pb(II) adsorption on the MnO2 adsorbents. In a column adsorption test delta-MnO2 was capable of continuously treating 25 000 bed volumes synthetic wastewater stream with an influent concentration of 20 mg L-1 Pb(II) and an effluent concentration below 0.5 mg L-1. This work indicates that delta-MnO2 has great potential to be used as an effective adsorbent for Pb(II) removal.
Mn2O3 as an Electron Shuttle between Peroxymonosulfate and Organic Pollutants: The Dominant Role of Surface Reactive Mn(IV) Species

Abstract:The environmentally benign Mn oxides play a crucial role in the transformation of organic contaminants, either through catalytically decomposing oxidants, e.g., peroxymonosulfate (PMS), or through directly oxidizing the target pollutants. Because of their dual roles and the complex surface chemical reactions, the mechanism involved in Mn oxide-catalyzed PMS activation processes remains obscure. Here, we clearly elucidate the mechanism involved in the Mn2O3 catalyzed PMS activation process by means of separating the PMS activation and the pollutant oxidation process. Mn2O3 acts as a shuttle that mediates the electron transfer from organic substrates to PMS, accompanied by the redox cycle of surface Mn(IV)/Mn(III). Multiple experimental results indicate that PMS is bound to the surface of Mn2O3 to form an inner-sphere complex, which then decomposes to form long-lived surface reactive Mn(IV) species, without the generation of sulfate radicals (SO4 center dot-) and hydroxyl radicals (HO center dot). The surface reactive Mn(IV) species are proposed to be responsible for the degradation of organic contaminants (e.g., phenol) and the formation of singlet oxygen (O-1(2)), followed by the regeneration of the surface Mn(III) sites on Mn2O3. This study advances the fundamental understanding of the underlying mechanism involved in transition metal oxide-catalyzed PMS activation processes.

Abstract:Oxidation of Mn(II) or As(III) by molecular oxygen is slow at pH < 9, while they can be catalytically oxidized in the presence of oxide minerals and then removed from contaminated water. However, the reaction mechanisms on simultaneous oxidation of Mn(II) and As(III) on oxide mineral surface and their accompanied removal efficiency remain unclear. This study compared Mn(II) oxidation on four common metal oxides (γ-Al2O3, CuO, α-Fe2O3 and ZnO) and investigated the simultaneous oxidation and removal of Mn(II) and As(III) through batch experiments and spectroscopic analyses. Among the tested oxides, CuO and α-Fe2O3 possess greater catalytic activity toward Mn(II) oxidation. Oxidation and removal kinetics of Mn(II) and As(III) on CuO indicate that O2 is the terminal electron acceptor for Mn(II) and As(III) oxidation on CuO, and Mn(II) acts as an electron shuttle to promote As(III) oxidation and removal. The main oxidized product of Mn(II) on CuO is high-valent MnOx species. This newly formed Mn(III) or Mn(IV) phases promote As(III) oxidation on CuO at circumneutral pH 8 and is reduced to Mn(II), which may be then released into solution. This study provides new insights into metal oxide-catalyzed oxidation of pollutants Mn(II) and As(III) and suggests that CuO should be considered as an efficient material to remediate Mn(II) and As(III) contamination.

Abstract:The increased release of various emerging organic contaminants into natural waters has posed great threats to ecological safety and public health. The ensuing global water contamination has necessitated the development of highly efficient treatment strategies for water purification. Herein, we presented for the first time that the combined utilization of permanganate (Mn(VII)) and periodate (PI) could synergistically and rapidly accomplish complete destruction of different organic micropollutants (e.g., bisphenol F, methotrexate, and tetracycline) within 2–5 min. Comparatively, the single treatment only eliminated very small amounts of micropollutants. Mechanistic investigations were performed using the trapper-based electron spin resonance, scavenging and probe experiments, UV–vis spectra analysis, determination of iodine species, and multiple validation tests. These data collectively suggested that the highly reactive Mn(V)/Mn(VI) intermediates played the leading role in accelerating contaminant abatement within the Mn(VII)/PI oxidation system. Reactive oxygen/or iodine species (1O2, OH, O2-, IO3, and IO4) and low valence Mn species (Mn(II), Mn(III), and in-situ formed MnO2 colloids) did not participate in decontamination in this process. Subsequently, the oxidized products of three micropollutants were determined, and the transformation pathways were clarified. Ring-opening, C-C bond cleavage, demethylation, carbonylation, and hydroxylation reactions mainly occurred in the degradation process. Notably, the combined system did not yield any toxic iodinated end products. Finally, the environmental risks of the degradation products were also evaluated based on in silico QSAR-based prediction tools. Overall, this study provides a novel, highly efficient, and green treatment technology, i.e., Mn(VII)/PI system, which could be employed for rapid and sustainable water decontamination.
