Abstract:In this work, a novel adaptive event-trigered iterative learning control (ILC) scheme is designed for discrete-time nonlinear systems with time-varying parameters and random initial states. The reference trajectory can be iteration-invariant or iteration-varying. The control input is updated when the event-triggering condition is satisfied, which reduces the action time of controller and consequently the unnecessary waste of communication resource. An adaptive event-triggering condition parameter is designed to improve the efficiency of the event generator. Moreover, the parameter updating law of adaptive iterative learning controller is designed based on the recursive least squares algorithm. With the proposed adaptive ILC with event-triggered mechanism, the learning convergence along the iteration axis is guaranteed and communication burden is reduced. Finally, rigorous theoretical analysis under Lyapunov theory and illustrative examples are given to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed method.
Neural network based iterative learning predictive control design for mechatronic systems with isolated nonlinearity

Abstract:The paper presents a new nonlinear predictive control design for a kind of nonlinear mechatronic drive systems, which leads to the improvement of regulatory capacity for both reference input tracking and load disturbance rejection. The nonlinear system is first treated into an equal linear time-variant system plus a nonlinear part using a neural network, then an iterative learning linear predictive controller is developed with a similar structure of PI optimal regulator and with setpoint feed forward control. Because the overall control law is a linear one, this design gives a direct and also effective multi-step prediction method and avoids the complicated nonlinear optimization. The control law is also an accurate one compared with traditional linearized method. Besides, changes of the system state variables are considered in the objective function with control performance superior to conventional state space predictive control designs which only consider the predicted output errors. The proposed method is compared with conventional state space predictive control method and classical PI optimal control method. Tracking performance, robustness and disturbance rejection are enlightened.

Abstract:The precise operation control of high-speed trains is pivotal to maintain the safety and efficiency of trains, while the inevitable state delays will seriously attenuate the performance of control system. In this paper, an adaptive iterative learning control (ILC) approach for high-speed trains is presented in the presence of the nonlinearly parameterized uncertainties and multiple unknown state delays, aiming to drive that the displacements and velocities of trains can track the desired reference trajectories. To describe the operational dynamics of trains more realistically, the multi-particle model of trains involving multiple time-varying delays is established by analyzing the aerodynamic resistance, mechanical resistance, and coupler force acting on different cars. The proposed adaptive ILC scheme fully leverages various techniques, e.g., the hyperbolic tangent function, the parameter separation, to cope with the inherent nonlinearities, uncertainties and couplings of system. Specially, to eliminate the negative influence of unknown delays, an appropriate Krasovskii function is integrated into the Lyapunov criterion to devise the learning controller and check the stability of control systems. The novelties of our work lie in that the refinement model and periodical characteristic are simultaneously utilized to improve the practicability and performance of control scheme for the high-speed trains with multiple state delays.

The proposed method utilizes an iteration‐varying dead‐zone function to estimate both parametric and non‐parametric uncertainties simultaneously. Moreover, an event‐triggered control mechanism is employed to minimize the unnecessary usage of communication resource. In this study, a robust adaptive event‐triggered iterative learning control (ET‐ILC) method is developed for discrete‐time non‐repetitive nonlinear systems with both time‐varying system parameters and time‐iteration‐varying non‐parametric uncertainty. The proposed method utilizes an iteration‐varying dead‐zone function to estimate both parametric and non‐parametric uncertainties simultaneously. Moreover, an event‐triggered control mechanism including a mixed triggering strategy is employed to minimize the unnecessary usage of communication resource. This strategy updates the controller only when the triggering condition is met, thereby reducing the frequency of controller actions. The results are also extended to a class of multiple‐input–multiple‐output (MIMO) non‐repetitive nonlinear systems. The designed robust adaptive ET‐ILC algorithm not only guarantees perfect learning convergence in the iteration domain but also contributes to saving the system resources. The effectiveness of the presented method is demonstrated by virtue of the rigorous theoretical analysis and the illustrative simulation examples.

Abstract:This technical note addresses an adaptive iterative learning control (AILC) problem for nonlinear dynamical systems with partially unknown iteration-varying parameter. Referring to the scheme of state-space, an AILC effort is presented for randomly varying reference tracking together with initial shift problem in iteration domain. Furthermore, the AILC technique is extended to systems with several parameters in discussion. A simulation example confirms the validity of the proposed method.

Abstract:In this study, the problem of adaptive iterative learning control (AILC) is considered for a class of multiple-input-multiple-output discrete-time nonlinear systems where the initial condition and reference trajectory could be randomly varying in the iteration domain. It is assumed that the considered systems are subjected to time-iteration-varying unknown parameters. The iteration-varying parameters are generated by a known high-order internal model (HOIM) that is formulated as a polynomial between two consecutive iterations. By incorporating the HOIM into the controller design, the learning convergence of ILC is guaranteed through rigorous analysis under Lyapunov theory. The illustrative example is presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of AILC method.

Abstract:This article considers the tracking control of unknown nonlinear nonaffine repetitive discrete-time multi-input multi-output systems. Two data-driven iterative learning control (ILC) schemes are designed based on two equivalent dynamic linearization data models of an unknown ideal learning controller, which exists theoretically in the iteration domain. The two control schemes provide ways of selecting learning controllers based on the complexity of the controlled nonlinear systems. The learning control gain matrixes of the two learning controllers are optimized through the steepest descent method using only the measured input-output data of the nonlinear systems. The proposed ILC approaches are pure data-driven since no model information of the controlled systems is involved. The stability and convergence of the proposed ILC approaches are rigorously analyzed under reasonable conditions. Numerical simulation and an experiment based on a Gantry-type linear motor drive system are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed data-driven ILC approaches.

Abstract:In this study, the problem of adaptive iterative learning control (AILC) for a class of discrete-time nonlinear systems with non-repetitiveness is considered. Two types of non-repetitive problem are studied in the nonlinear system and an AILC method with recursive least squares algorithm is designed to remove the influence of non-repetitiveness. It is shown that, the AILC law can guarantee the asymptotical tracking convergence of system state through rigorous analysis. In the end, an example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed AILC scheme.

Abstract:Iterative learning control (ILC) is a simple and effective method for the control of systems that perform same task repetitively. In this paper, a current cycle error assisted ILC scheme for a class of discrete nonlinear time-varying systems is presented. Under a few reasonable assumptions, sufficient conditions for guaranteeing the convergence of the learning scheme are given and then proved by an inductive method. It is shown that the conditions are independent of the specific form of the state space model. Finally, some simulation results are given to illustrate the new control strategy

Abstract:An adaptive iterative learning control method is proposed for a class of nonlinear strict-feedback discrete-time systems with random initial conditions and iteration-varying desired trajectories. An n-step ahead predictor approach is employed to estimate the future states in the control design. Discrete Nussbaum gain method is utilised to deal with the lack of a priori knowledge of control directions. The proposed control algorithm guarantees the boundedness of all the signals in the controlled system. The tracking error converges to zero asymptotically along the iterative learning axis except for beginning states affected by random initial conditions. The effectiveness of the proposed control scheme is verified through numerical simulation.

Abstract:SummaryIn this paper, a high‐order internal model (HOIM)‐based iterative learning control (ILC) scheme is proposed for discrete‐time nonlinear systems to tackle the tracking problem under iteration‐varying desired trajectories. By incorporating the HOIM that is utilized to describe the variation of desired trajectories in the iteration domain into the ILC design, it is shown that the system output can converge to the desired trajectory along the iteration axis within arbitrarily small error. Furthermore, the learning property in the presence of state disturbances and output noise is discussed under HOIM‐based ILC with an integrator in the iteration axis. Abstract:In this paper, an iterative learning control algorithm is proposed for discrete linear time-varying systems to track iteration-varying desired trajectories. A high-order internal model (HOIM) is utilized to describe the variation of desired trajectories in the iteration domain. In the sequel, the HOIM is incorporated into the design of learning gains. The learning convergence in the iteration axis can be guaranteed with rigorous proof. The simulation results with permanent magnet linear motors (PMLM) demonstrate that the proposed HOIM based approach yields good performance and achieves perfect tracking.

Abstract:Iterative learning control (ILC) has been successfully applied to numerous batch processes over the past decades. Monotonic convergence of tracking error is a desired characteristic that attracts much attention in academia. Many factors arising in industrial practice, such as strong nonlinearity and parameter uncertainty, have challenged the most existing monotonically convergent ILC approaches. This motivates the development of the nonlinear monotonically convergent ILC (NMC-ILC) in this paper. The proposed NMC-ILC is an optimization-based control strategy, in which the original nonlinear process is linearly approximated to reduce the complexity of the optimization problem accompanied. An upper bound of the tracking error is derived by considering the effects of model mismatches that consist of two components: structural mismatch induced by the linearization and parametric mismatch arising from the indetermination of process parameters. The NMC-ILC is then devised by minimizing this upper bound. Numerical experiments are conducted on an ILC-testing benchmark and the velocity control in an injection molding process.

Abstract:Iterative learning control is an effective approach to the control of processes that are repetitive in nature. An open-closed-loop PI-type iterative learning control scheme for the precise tracking control of a class of discrete nonlinear time-varying systems over a finite time interval is presented. The scheme updates control input with tracking errors of both current and last iterations simultaneously. Sufficient and necessary conditions which guarantee the convergence of the scheme are given and then proved with inductive method. Finally, the conditions are verified with simulation results.
Fault Tolerant Nonrepetitive Trajectory Tracking for MIMO Output Constrained Nonlinear Systems Using Iterative Learning Control

Abstract:Most works on iterative learning control (ILC) assume identical reference trajectories for the system state over the iteration domain. This fundamental assumption may not always hold in practice, where the desired trajectories or control objectives may be iteration dependent. In this paper, we relax this fundamental assumption, by introducing a new way of modifying the reference trajectories. The concept of modifier functions has been introduced for the first time in the ILC literature. This proposed approach is also a unified framework that can handle other common types of initial conditions in ILC. Multi-input multi-output nonlinear systems are considered, which can be subject to the actuator faults. Time and iteration dependent constraint requirements on the system output can be effectively handled. Backstepping design and composite energy function approach are used in the analysis. We show that in the closed loop analysis, the proposed control scheme can guarantee uniform convergence on the full state tracking error over the iteration domain, beyond a small initial time interval in each iteration, while the constraint requirements on the system output are never violated. In the end two simulation examples are shown to illustrate the efficacy of the proposed ILC algorithm.

Abstract:This paper presents an extension method of iterative learning control (ILC) to address the applications associated with non-repetitive time-varying systems (NTVSs). Conventional ILC approaches employ fixed nominal system models, but non-repetitive time-varying models may lead to accumulated model uncertainties, which fails to satisfy the robust convergence conditions. To tackle this issue, a novel ILC algorithm with parameter estimation is proposed using back propagation neural network. This algorithm incorporates an approach that utilizes Bayesian regularization training mechanism to accurately estimate non-repetitive time-varying parameters. Through comprehensive experiment on Monolithic XY Stage, the performance of proposed algorithm is validated to demonstrate its feasibility and effectiveness while handling tasks on NTVSs.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel neural-network iterative learning control (IL, ILC) protocol for generalized regression neural networks (GRNN) based on global space–time is proposed for a class of unknown nonlinear discrete-time systems. The proposed controller is an ideal controller with multidimensional gain based on the global space–time in the iteration domain. The control gain is automatically learned by updating the matrix of the GRNN with correction factors based on the accumulation of global system input and output (I/O) data along the iteration axis. By a rigorous theoretical analysis, properties that can drive the tracking error to be uniformly bounded in the iteration axis are established for the proposed control protocol with the goal of achieving optimal control. The effectiveness and adaptability of the proposed control protocol have been validated through numerical simulations and two comparative examples on general high-frequency signal tracking.
