Abstract:With the advent of digitization into radiology prior to pathology, many individualized Computer Aided Diagnosis (CAD) systems have been modelled separately using Deep Learning (DL) for Magnetic Resonance Images (MRI) and Whole Slide Images (WSI). The gold standard for the diagnosis of brain tumors is the use of invasive histopathology images. Even though there are CAD systems based on non-invasive MRI and invasive WSI, for brain tumor classification, when images from both these fields are combined, the diagnosis of the disease is more efficient and accurate. For this purpose, radiology and pathology images of the same patients were collected for the proposed work. The novelty of the proposed work is 1) the use of a combined RadPath framework for the efficient classification of brain tumors into three classes: low-grade astrocytoma, oligodendroglioma, and glioblastoma. 2) the use of a novel split-stitch algorithm to process high-resolution WSI using low-cost hardware resources. The high-resolution WSI was split into low-resolution tiles using the tiling algorithm. The low-resolution tiles were stitched back to the entire image using a voting algorithm. A reason why digitization of WSI along with Artificial Intelligence (AI) is not implemented in lab is because of the use of high-cost hardware's or cloud storage for WSI-AI processing. This drawback is addressed in the proposed work. Accuracy, Kappa, F1 score, AUC, Sensitivity and Specificity of 0.94, 0.9, 0.89, 0.95, 0.97 and 0.94 for MRI images and 0.96, 0.85, 0.88, 0.98, 0.96 and 0.91 for WSI, were achieved with split-stitch algorithm, using ResNet50 and Computational Precision Medicine-RadiologyPathology (CPM-RadPath) 2019 dataset.
