Abstract:Myasthenia gravis (MG), a rare chronic neuromuscular disorder, is characterized by progressive physical decline and requires long-term pharmacological treatment. Due to the decline of physical and social abilities, MG patients are in great need of social support, including tangible and emotional support. This study aims to examine the association between social support and medication adherence and the possible mediating effects of mental health and self-efficacy among MG patients.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper attempts to address the issue of exploring the relationship between social support and medication adherence in patients with Myasthenia Gravis (MG), and examining the mediating roles of mental health and self-efficacy between these two factors. ### Issues the Paper Attempts to Address: 1. **The association between social support and medication adherence**: Investigating the relationship between the level of social support and medication adherence. 2. **The mediating role of mental health**: Exploring the mediating role of mental health (symptoms of depression and anxiety) between social support and medication adherence. 3. **The mediating role of self-efficacy**: Studying the mediating role of self-efficacy between social support and medication adherence. ### Research Background: - **Myasthenia Gravis (MG)**: A rare chronic neuromuscular disease characterized by progressive physical decline, requiring long-term medication treatment. - **Patient Needs**: Due to impaired physical and social functions, MG patients require substantial social support, including emotional and practical support. - **Poor Medication Adherence**: Studies have found that medication adherence among Chinese MG patients is very low, with only 1.4% of patients highly adhering to medication treatment. ### Main Findings: - The level of social support is positively correlated with medication adherence, and this relationship is mainly mediated by self-efficacy and mental health. - Specifically, patients with higher social support exhibit better mental health and higher medication self-efficacy, thereby improving medication adherence. ### Conclusion: Providing social support and focusing on mental health interventions to enhance patients' medication self-efficacy can effectively improve medication adherence in MG patients.
