Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate optical envelope detection of 40 Mbaud 16‐QAM and QPSK RF modulated signals. The proposed system employs an electro‐absorption modulator performing the function of an optical halfwave rectifier. In this experiment, the QAM and QPSK signals are frequency down converted from a 1.6 GHz carrier frequency to an IF at 500 MHz, requiring no high frequency local oscillator and mixer at the remote base station. This result proves the feasibility of optical envelope detection for complex modulation formats of RF signals for hybrid wireless‐fiber transmission links. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:We propose a photonic method for generating millimeter-wave 4-QAM/QPSK modulated signals. The method is based on optical phase modulation by multilevel electrical signals and optical carrier-suppression. Simulation results are presented for 2.5 Gsymbol/s 4-QAM and QPSK signals at a 36 GHz carrier. Furthermore, this method can be extended to generate millimeter-wave m-PSK signals and can be incorporated into broadband radio-over-fiber systems to support wireless/ wireline converged access network.

Abstract:We propose a reconfigurable 8PSK/8QAM modulator implementation by employing two cascaded QPSK modulators with an interferometer in between. With simple control of bias voltage of the interferometer, a flexible switching between 8PSK/8QAM can be achieved. The transmission performance of the generated 8PSK/8QAM signals over different link scenarios is compared via numerical simulations. The results reveal that the proposed implementation has the capability of maximizing transmission distance in the case of dynamic optical network.

Abstract:In dynamic optical networking scenarios, it is desirable that the optical transmitter chooses the most suitable modulation format in order to achieve optimal transmission performance. Owing to the ability of switching among different modulation formats, flexible optical transmitters based on reconfigurable optical devices are becoming a key component for the implementation of future flexible optical networks. In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate a flexible 8-ary transmitter to achieve adaptive switching between 8-ary phase-shift keying (8PSK) and circular 8-ary quadrature-amplitude modulation (8QAM) through reconfiguration of two cascaded in-phase/quadrature (IQ) modulators with different driving signals and biasing conditions. An arbitrary binary quadrature-amplitude modulation (2QAM) with constant or non-constant amplitude is proposed and experimentally demonstrated using an IQ modulator. Then, optical 8PSK or 8QAM modulation formats are successfully synthesized when a standard squared QPSK modulator is cascaded with a constant-amplitude or non-constant-amplitude 2QAM, respectively. Abstract:The integration of communication and sensing (ICAS) in optical networks is an inevitable trend in building intelligent, multi-scenario, application-converged communication systems. However, due to the impact of nonlinear effects, co-fiber transmission of sensing signals and communication signals can cause interference to the communication signals, leading to an increased bit error rate (BER). This paper proposes a noncoherent solution based on the alternate polarization chirped return-to-zero frequency shift keying (Apol-CRZ-FSK) modulation format to realize a 4 × 100 Gbps dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) optical network. Simulation results show that compared to traditional modulation formats, such as chirped return-to-zero frequency shift keying (CRZ-FSK) and differential quadrature phase shift keying (DQPSK), this solution demonstrates superior resistance to nonlinear effects, enabling longer transmission distances and better transmission performance. Moreover, to meet the transmission requirements and signal sensing and recognition needs in future optical networks, this study employs the Inception-ResNet-v2 convolutional neural network model to identify three modulation formats. Compared with six deep learning methods including AlexNet, ResNet50, GoogleNet, SqueezeNet, Inception-v4, and Xception, it achieves the highest performance. This research provides a low-cost, low-complexity, and high-performance solution for signal transmission and signal recognition in high-speed optical networks designed for integrated communication and sensing.

Abstract:We discuss how all-optical signal processing might play a role in future all-optical packet switched networks. We introduce a concept of optical packet switches that employ entirely all-optical signal processing technology. The optical packet switch is made out of three functional blocks: the optical header processing block, the optical memory block and the wavelength conversion block. The operation principle of the optical packet switch is explained. We show that these three functional blocks can be realized by using the nonlinearities of semiconductor optical amplifiers. Some technologies in these three functional blocks are described. The header processor is realized using a Terahertz Optical Asymmetric Demultiplexer. We also describe a header pre-processor to improve the extinction ratio of the header processor output. In the optical memory block, we show that an all-optical memory can be obtained by using two coupled lasers that form a master-slave configuration. The state of the optical memory is distinguished by the wavelength of the master laser. We extend the concept to an optical memory can have multiple states. In the wavelength conversion block, we demonstrate a 160 Gbit/s wavelength conversion using a single semiconductor optical amplifier in combination with a well-designed optical bandpass filter. The semiconductor optical amplifier has a gain recovery time greater than 90 ps, which corresponds to a less than 20 GHz bandwidth for conventional wavelength conversion. We show that by properly using the optical bandpass filter, ultrafast dynamics in the semiconductor optical amplifier can be employed for wavelength conversion at ultrahigh bit-rates.

Abstract:An all-optical modulation format conversion scheme from star-QAM to ASK and PSK signals is proposed by employing four-wave mixing (FWM) in highly nonlinear fibers. The phase modulation information of star-QAM signal is firstly converted to the PSK format by a degenerate FWM process under gain saturation, and then the amplitude modulation information of star-QAM signal is mapped into the ASK format by means of a non-degenerate FWM associated with the resulting PSK signal. The detailed signal processing is presented by theory and simulation. As examples, the bit-error-ratio performances of 8QAM and 16QAM signals are evaluated by a non-degenerate FWM-based aggregation scheme for ASK and PSK formats.

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate mitigation of pattern-induced degradation in an optical crosspoint switch (OXS) matrix by utilizing differential phase shift keying (DPSK) modulation format. We experimentally demonstrate 4×4 unicast optical packet switching and dynamic reconfiguration for 4-channel, 200GHz spacing of RZ-DPSK payloads. Reconfigurable time as fast as 2ns is achieved owing to the optimized control circuit and device fabrication. The power and wavelength dependence are obtained for the RZ-DPSK payload. We also investigate the cascadability of the OXS based on re-circulating loops. Due to the great suppression of the pattern effect in OXS, DPSK has shown dramatical improvement of switching properties compared to conventional ON–OFF keying (OOK) signal. The DPSK payload can outperform OOK for 3.2dB after 9 hops optical switching.
High-speed Optical Binary Data Pattern Recognition for Network Security Applications

Abstract:All-optical high-speed binary data pattern recognition is one of the key technologies in network security applications. A serial pattern recognition scheme is presented, which can detect and locate a specified random target pattern within an input data sequence at high bit-rate. The logic operation principle is presented using logic equations. The logic AND/XNOR gates and a recirculating loop at 10.65–42.6 Gbit/s are successfully demonstrated using three semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) based gates. The experiments have successfully demonstrated the random pattern recognition up to 256–bits at 42.6 Gbit/s.

Abstract:We propose a novel scheme of simultaneous polarization separation and switching, based on the orthogonally-polarized four-wave mixing (FWM) effect, for ultra-high-speed polarization multiplexing (Pol-MUX) fiber networks such as 100-Gbps and 400-Gbps backbone networks. We use theoretical and experimental analysis of the vector theory of FWM to successfully achieve polarization separation and all-optical switching by utilizing a 100-Gbps dual polarization-quadrature phase shift keying (DP-QPSK) signal and two orthogonally-polarized pumps. Both of the polarization-separated QPSK signals have clear constellation diagrams, with root mean square (RMS) error vector magnitudes (EVMs) of 14.32% and 14.11% respectively. The wavelengths of idlers can be created at 30 different wavelengths, which are consistent with International Telecommunication Union-Telecommunication (ITU-T) wavelengths, by flexibly changing the wavelength of the pump light. Moreover, the idlers that have distinct wavelengths have power distributed in a range from 10 dBm to -15 dBm, which can support error-free transmission. The power penaltyis 5 dB lower than that of back-to-back (BTB) signal for both the X- and Y-polarization components measured at a bit error ratio (BER) of 3.8 x10(-3). Our experimental results indicate that this scheme has promising applications in future backbone networks.

Abstract:This article introduces a novel method to enhance contrast ratio in optical label pattern recognition, crucial for packet switches and data security. By employing a 4× 4 multi‐mode interference coupler with multiple input signals, the proposed approach significantly improves contrast ratio, theoretically from 3.0 dB to 9.5 dB and infinitely for certain cases. Numerical simulations confirm its efficacy, demonstrating successful discrimination of QPSK patterns with results closely matching theoretical predictions. Pattern recognition of optical label is utilized not only in packet switches but also in the field of data security due to its wide range of applications. In particular, pattern recognition using waveguide devices is highly valued because it eliminates the need for encoder processing. However, existing methods suffer from the problem of degraded contrast ratio because half of the input power are emitted from non‐target waveguides. In this article, a method is proposed to improve the contrast ratio employing a 4× 4 multi‐mode interference (MMI) coupler with multiple input signals. The theoretical results reveal that the proposed method improves the contrast ratio from 3.0 dB to 9.5 dB and ∞ dB for the three‐input and four‐input cases, respectively, for quadrature phase‐shift keying (QPSK)‐modulated signal. Furthermore, numerical simulation was performed through the three dimension finite‐difference time‐domain (3D‐FDTD) method, and the proposed scheme successfully discriminated each QPSK pattern. The power value |E|2 at all ports closely matches the theoretical value, and the ratios of 9.5 dB and > 30.0 dB are numerically obtained.

Abstract:A flexible all-optical format interconversion scheme based on a pump assisted nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM) is proposed and numerically simulated for the first time to our knowledge. In this scheme, input multi-Gbps 8QAM signals are divided into clockwise (CW) and counter-clockwise (CCW) components by a 3-dB optical coupler (OC), which also couples light from the input pump into the NOLM from the CCW direction. The numerical model of the pump assisted NOLM with CW and CCW optical paths is simplified using a nonlinear Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI). Optical signals in the upper MZI arm will be mainly affected by the self-phase modulation (SPM) effect when traversing the highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF) and those in the lower MZI arm are impacted by cross-phase modulation (XPM) in addition to SPM when they experience the HNLF with the input pump light. When the upper-arm optical signal with SPM phase shift and the lower arm optical signal with SPM and XPM phase shifts are coherently mixed, a new converted 8QAM signal can be obtained. The power transfer function (PTF) of the pump assisted NOLM and the relative phase shift (RPS) between the input and the output optical signals are theoretically provided and verified. By only changing the input power of the 8QAM signal and the pump light, all-optical format interconversion of square-, standard- and star-shaped 8QAM signals can be achieved. Furthermore, the proposed scheme can achieve format conversion from the 30 Gbps square-shaped 8QAM signal to a 20 Gbps quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) signal. The scheme performance is analyzed via constellation diagrams, eye diagrams, the error vector magnitude (EVM) and the bit error rate (BER) of the optical signals. The scheme developed can be deployed in optical gateways to connect different optical networks by dynamically selecting their appropriate modulation formats.

Abstract:All-optical phase regeneration aims at restoring the phase information of coherently encoded data signals directly in the optical domain so as to compensate for phase distortions caused by transceiver imperfections and nonlinear impairments along the transmission link. Although it was proposed two decades ago, all-optical phase regeneration has not been seen in realistic networks to date, mainly because this technique entails complex bulk modules and relies on high-precision phase sensitive nonlinear dynamics, both of which are adverse to field deployment. Here, we demonstrate a new, to the best of our knowledge, architecture to implement all-optical phase regeneration using integrated photonic devices. In particular, we realize quadrature phase quantization by exploring the phase-sensitive parametric wave mixing within on-chip silicon waveguides, while multiple coherent pump laser tones are provided by a chip-scale micro-cavity Kerr frequency comb. Multi-channel all-optical phase regeneration is experimentally demonstrated for 40 Gbps QPSK data, achieving the best SNR improvement of more than 6 dB. Our study showcases a promising avenue to enable the practical implementation of all-optical phase regeneration in realistic long-distance fiber transmission networks.

Abstract:Polarization control is of vital importance in optical communications, which can affect the stability and bit error rate of a system. We demonstrate an all-fiber high-speed polarization control scheme based on a bidirectional Sagnac ring. The polarization direction can be accurately controlled by adjusting the phase difference of an electro-optic fiber phase modulator in the ring, meanwhile it is realized that only a single beam port outputs different polarization states. The phase can be adjusted accuratly to 10(-3) rad, giving an extinction ratio as high as 30 dB, and the modulation speed can reach 2 GHz. The system has excellent stability, and as the optical circuit consists of simple, low cost components which can be easily integrated, there are good prospects for its application in quantum cryptography and other optical communcations fields.

Abstract:Advanced phase modulation formats, such as differential binary phase-shift keying (DPSK), differential quadrature phase-shift keying (DQPSK), and differential eight-ary phase-shift keying (D8PSK), and so on, have attracted considerable research attention as promising candidates for future optical communication systems. To accommodate different requirements such as nonlinear and dispersion tolerance, implementation complexity or spectral efficiency in different regions of networks, several different modulation formats are expected to coexist in the future optical network. For example, low-speed binary modulation formats may be deployed in the edge networks such as metro or access networks, whereas high-speed or multi-level modulation formats are preferred to be employed at the core networks to support high-speed long-haul transmission. To support the transparent cross-connection among various networks, and the traffic grooming from low-speed edge networks to high-speed core networks, optical phase transmultiplexing technology is highly desirable. In this paper, we report an all-optical phase interleaving technology to phase-multiplex 3x10-Gb/s differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) signals to a single 30-Gb/s DPSK, and an optical phase-modulated format conversion scheme to convert 2x10-Gb/s DPSK WDM to a single quadrature 20-Gb/s differential quadrature phase-shift keying (DQPSK). The proposed schemes are based on four-wave mixing effect in highly-nonlinear fiber. Different from conventional optical signal processing schemes, the proposed schemes are achieved in optical phase domain directly. Experiments were performed to verify the feasibility of the proposed schemes. Both of them could be applied in transparent optical networks to act as an optical phase transmultiplexer enabling traffic grooming and cross-connection among different networks.
