Abstract:The heat kernel (or propagator) of the quantum harmonic oscillator (qHO) is given by the Mehler formula, and the partition function is obtained by taking its trace. In general, the spectral zeta function of the given system is obtained by the Mellin transform of its partition function. In the case of non-commutative harmonic oscillators (NCHO), however, the heat kernel and partition functions are still unknown, although meromorphic continuation of the corresponding spectral zeta function and special values at positive integer points have been studied. On the other hand, explicit formulas for the heat kernel and partition function have been obtained for the quantum Rabi model (QRM), which is the simplest and most fundamental model for light and matter interaction in addition to having the NCHO as a covering model. In this paper, we propose a notion of the quasi-partition function for a quantum interaction model if the corresponding spectral zeta function can be meromorphically continued to the whole complex plane. The quasi-partition function for qHO and QRM actually gives the partition function. Assuming that this holds for the NCHO (currently a conjecture), we can find various interesting properties for the spectrum of the NCHO. Moreover, although we cannot expect any functional equation of the spectral zeta function for the quantum interaction models, we try to seek if there is some relation between the special values at positive and negative points. Attempting to seek this, we encounter certain divergent series expressing formally the Hurwitz zeta function by calculating integrals of the partition functions. We then give two interpretations of these divergent series by the Borel summation and $p$-adically convergent series defined by the $p$-adic Hurwitz zeta function.

Gauged permutation invariant matrix quantum mechanics: Partition functions

Abstract:The Hilbert spaces of matrix quantum mechanical systems with $N \times N$ matrix degrees of freedom $ X $ have been analysed recently in terms of $S_N$ symmetric group elements $U$ acting as $X \rightarrow U X U^T $. Solvable models have been constructed uncovering partition algebras as hidden symmetries of these systems. The solvable models include an 11-dimensional space of matrix harmonic oscillators, the simplest of which is the standard matrix harmonic oscillator with $U(N)$ symmetry. The permutation symmetry is realised as gauge symmetry in a path integral formulation in a companion paper. With the simplest matrix oscillator Hamiltonian subject to gauge permutation symmetry, we use the known result for the micro-canonical partition function to derive the canonical partition function. It is expressed as a sum over partitions of $N$ of products of factors which depend on elementary number-theoretic properties of the partitions, notably the least common multiples and greatest common divisors of pairs of parts appearing in the partition. This formula is recovered using the Molien-Weyl formula, which we review for convenience. The Molien-Weyl formula is then used to generalise the formula for the canonical partition function to the 11-parameter permutation invariant matrix harmonic oscillator.

Path integral for the quartic oscillator: An accurate analytic formula for the partition function

Abstract:In this work an approximate analytic expression for the quantum partition function of the quartic oscillator described by the potential $V(x) = \frac{1}{2} \omega^2 x^2 + g x^4$ is presented. Using a path integral formalism, the exact partition function is approximated by the partition function of a harmonic oscillator with an effective frequency depending both on the temperature and coupling constant $g$. By invoking a Principle of Minimal Sensitivity (PMS) of the path integral to the effective frequency, we derive a mathematically well-defined analytic formula for the partition function. Quite remarkably, the formula reproduces qualitatively and quantitatively the key features of the exact partition function. The free energy is accurate to a few percent over the entire range of temperatures and coupling strengths $g$. Both the harmonic ($g\rightarrow 0$) and classical (high-temperature) limits are exactly recovered. The divergence of the power series of the ground-state energy at weak coupling, characterized by a factorial growth of the perturbational energies, is reproduced as well as the functional form of the strong-coupling expansion along with accurate coefficients. Explicit accurate expressions for the ground- and first-excited state energies, $E_0(g)$ and $E_1(g)$ are also presented.

Abstract:New formulas are given for the grand partition function of paraboson systems of order p with n orbitals and parafermion systems of order p with m orbitals. These formulas allow the computation of statistical and thermodynamic functions for such systems. We analyze and discuss the average number of particles on an orbital, and the average number of particles in the system. For some special cases (identical orbital energies, or equidistant orbital energies) we can simplify the grand partition functions and describe thermodynamic properties in more detail. Some specific properties are also illustrated in plots of thermodynamic functions.

Abstract:The equipartition theorem is a fundamental law of classical statistical physics, which states that every degree of freedom contributes $k_{B}T/2$ to the energy, where $T$ is the temperature and $k_{B}$ is the Boltzmann constant. Recent studies have revealed the existence of a quantum version of the equipartition theorem. In the present work,we focus on how to obtain the quantum counterpart of the generalized equipartition theorem for arbitrary quadratic systems in which the multimode Brownian ocillators interact with multiple reservoirs at the same temperature. An alternative method of deriving the energy of the system is also discussed and compared with the result of the the quantum version of the equipartition theorem, after which we conclude that the latter is more reasonable. Our results can be viewed as an indispensable generalization of rencent works on a quantum version of the equipartition theorem.

Abstract:The interpretation of static and dynamic scattering experiments on droplet microemulsions is discussed. We review the arguments given in our previous papers that call into question the methods of current determination of basic phenomenological characteristics of the droplet surfactant monolayer, such as the bending and Gaussian rigidities. We give also responses to our criticism by T. Hellweg, B. Farago, M. Gradzielski, D. Langevin, and S. Safran (Colloids and Surfaces A 221 (2003) 257 and some other works by these authors). They agree with some of our objections; the rest of their response is shown to be flawed. We also show that in many points their way of discussion is improper and misleading. It is concluded that the values of the parameters of microemulsion droplets, as extracted in their experiments, are not reliable and should be reexamined.

Abstract:We establish an efficient approximation algorithm for the partition functions of a class of quantum spin systems at low temperature, which can be viewed as stable quantum perturbations of classical spin systems. Our algorithm is based on combining the contour representation of quantum spin systems of this type due to Borgs, Kotecký, and Ueltschi with the algorithmic framework developed by Helmuth, Perkins, and Regts, and Borgs et al.

Abstract:We illustrate the main features of a recently proposed method based on ensemble density functional theory to divide rigorously a complex molecular system into its parts [M.H. Cohen and A. Wasserman, J. Phys. Chem. A 111, 2229 (2007)]. The illustrative system is an analog of the hydrogen molecule for which analytic expressions for the densities of the parts (hydrogen "atoms") are found along with the "reactivity potential" that enters the theory. While previous formulations of Chemical Reactivity Theory lead to zero, or undefined, values for the chemical hardness of the isolated parts, we demonstrate they can acquire a finite and positive hardness within the present formulation.

Abstract:Although partition temperature derived using the Darwin–Fowler method is exact for simple scenarios, the derivation for complex systems might reside in specific approximations whose viability is not ensured if the thermodynamic limit is not attained. This work elaborates on a related problem relevant to relativistic high-energy collisions. On the one hand, it is simple enough that closed-form expressions can be obtained precisely for the one-particle distribution function. On the other hand, the resulting expression is not an exponential form, and therefore, it is not straightforward that the notion of partition function could be implied. Specifically, we derive the one-particle distribution function for massless particles where the phase-space integration is performed exactly for the underlying canonical ensemble consisting of a given number of particles. We discuss the viability of the partition temperature in this case. Possible implications of the obtained results regarding the observed Tsallis distribution in transverse momentum spectra in high-energy collisions are also addressed.

Abstract:The Lee–Yang theorem for the zeroes of the partition function is not strictly applicable to quantum systems because the zeroes are defined in units of the fugacity ehΔτ, and the Euclidean-time lattice spacing Δτ can be divergent in the infrared (IR). We recently presented analytic arguments describing how a new space-Euclidean time zeroes expansion can be defined, which reproduces Lee and Yang's scaling but avoids the unresolved branch points associated with the breaking of nonlocal symmetries such as Parity. We now present a first numerical analysis for this new zeroes approach for a quantum spin chain system. We use our scheme to quantify the renormalization group flow of the physical lattice couplings to the IR fixed point of this system. We argue that the generic Finite-Size Scaling (FSS) function of our scheme is identically the entanglement entropy of the lattice partition function and, therefore, that we are able to directly extract the central charge, c, of the quantum spin chain system using conformal predictions for the scaling of the entanglement entropy.

Efficient Approaches To Solutions Of Partition Function For Condensed Matters

Abstract:The key problem of statistical physics standing over one hundred years is how to exactly calculate the partition function (or free energy), which severely hinders the theory to be applied to predict the thermodynamic properties of condensed matters. Very recently, we developed a direct integral approach (DIA) to the solutions and achieved ultrahigh computational efficiency and precision. In the present work, the background and the limitations of DIA were examined in details, and another method with the same efficiency was established to overcome the shortage of DIA for condensed system with lower density. The two methods were demonstrated with empirical potentials for solid and liquid cooper, solid argon and C-60 molecules by comparing the derived internal energy or pressure with the results of vast molecular dynamics simulations, showing that the precision is about ten times higher than previous methods in a temperature range up to melting point. The ultrahigh efficiency enables the two methods to be performed with ab initio calculations and the experimental equation of state of solid copper up to similar to 600 GPa was well reproduced, for the first time, from the partition function via density functional theory implemented.

Abstract:We have realized a quantum optics like Hanbury Brown and Twiss (HBT) experiment by partitioning, on an electronic beam-splitter, single elementary electronic excitations produced one by one by an on-demand emitter. We show that the measurement of the output currents correlations in the HBT geometry provides a direct counting, at the single charge level, of the elementary excitations (electron/hole pairs) generated by the emitter at each cycle. We observe the antibunching of low energy excitations emitted by the source with thermal excitations of the Fermi sea already present in the input leads of the splitter, which suppresses their contribution to the partition noise. This effect is used to probe the energy distribution of the emitted wave-packets.

Abstract:In this paper, we review the partitioned and partition-free approaches to the calculation of the time-dependent response of a molecular junction to the switch-on of an arbitrary time-dependent bias. Using the nonequilibrium Green’s function formalism on different time contours, we derive a formal equivalence between these two approaches. This clarifies a recent result of Odashima and Lewenkopf (Phys Rev B 95:104301, 2017), which is valid for a static bias and single-level molecular structure, and extends it to arbitrary time-dependent biases and arbitrarily large molecular structures.

Abstract:We study de Haas-van Alphen oscillations in a marginal Fermi liquid resulting from a three-dimensional metal tuned to a quantum-critical point (QCP). We show that the conventional approach based on extensions of the Lifshitz-Kosevich formula for the oscillation amplitudes becomes inapplicable when the correlation length exceeds the cyclotron radius. This breakdown is due to (i) non-analytic finite-temperature contributions to the fermion self-energy (ii) an enhancement of the oscillatory part of the self-energy by quantum fluctuations, and (iii) non-trivial dynamical scaling laws associated with the quantum critical point. We properly incorporate these effects within the Luttinger-Ward-Eliashberg framework for the thermodynamic potential by treating the fermionic and bosonic contributions on equal footing. As a result, we obtain the modified expressions for the oscillations of entropy and magnetization that remain valid in the non-Fermi liquid regime.

Imaginary-Temperature Zeros for Quantum Phase Transitions

Abstract:While the zeros of complex partition functions, such as Lee-Yang zeros and Fisher zeros, have been pivotal in characterizing temperature-driven phase transitions, extending this concept to zero temperature remains an open question. In this work, we propose a solution to this issue by calculating the imaginary-temperature zeros (ITZs), which are defined as the roots of the imaginary-temperature partition function. We illustrate the analytical properties of ITZs in the transverse-field Ising chain, showing that the ITZs' distribution can distinguish between various phases and signify the critical exponents. Universal singular behaviors manifest in such quantities as the edge density of ITZs and the magnetization, with the scaling exponents remarkably differing from those in Lee-Yang theory. We further illuminate the consistency between ITZs and the zeros of the spectral form factor, which offers a practical path for the experimental detection of ITZs.
