Abstract:In this study, we investigated the mediating effect of social support on the relationship between parenting stress and life satisfaction in Chinese mothers of children with cerebral palsy ( N = 369). The results showed that family support and friend support, but not significant-other support, had mediating effects on the relationship between parenting stress and life satisfaction. Moreover, the mediating effect of friend support was equal to family support. These results suggest that the focus should be on reducing parenting stress and increasing support from family and friends to help improve life satisfaction in mothers of children with cerebral palsy.

Abstract:Abstract Background This study aimed to examine the mediating effects of parenting style on the relationship between parental stress and behavioral problems of girls with precocious puberty. Methods This cross-sectional study analyzed a convenience sample of 200 mothers of girls with precocious puberty at a university hospital located in a metropolitan area. The Parental Stress measurement, Parents as Social Context Questionnaire, and Korean version Child Behavior Checklist (K-CBCL) 6–18 were measured via self-report questionnaires. Descriptive, t-test, Pearson correlation, and bootstrapping analyses were used to analyze the data. Results Negative parenting styles had a full mediating effect on the relationship between parental stress and internalizing and externalizing behavioral problems. Conclusions Care plans for parents of girls with precocious puberty should be designed and applied in health care settings to reduce internalizing and externalizing behavioral problems by decreasing negative parenting styles.

Abstract:Purpose. Mothers caring for children with disabilities often experience parental stress, which may lead them to suffer from depression. It is necessary to find a way to relieve their stress and depression. Therefore, we examined the effect of parental stress on depression and the buffering role of social support between them in a sample of 164 mothers of children with disabilities. Participants. One hundred and sixty-four participants (aged 25–58 years) in Gwangju and Jeollanamdo, South Korea, completed a set of self-reported measures. Methods. Parental stress, depression, and social support are assessed by Parental Stress Index, Multidimensional Scale Perceived Social Support, and Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale, respectively. Results. Parental stress significantly predicted depression, and social support showed the buffering effect on the relationship between parental stress and depression among mothers of children with disabilities. These findings indicate that mothers who perceive a high level of social support are less likely to experience depression. Conclusions. This study shows the moderating effect of social support on the relationship between parental stress and depression among mothers of children with disabilities. The level of depression they experience is not that great if they perceive a high level of social support even if they experience a high level of parental stress. These findings imply that social support is a critical resource that prevents the negative effect of parental stress on depression among mothers of children with disabilities.

Abstract:Importance: High stress and compromised mental health are well-documented among mothers of children with disabilities, but less is known about the factors that influence their participation and well-being, especially among Chinese mothers. Identifying these factors could lead to strategies to mitigate potential risks to maternal well-being. Objective: To explore the relationships among participation in health-promoting activities, perceived stigma, perceived support, and well-being of ethnic Chinese mothers who have children with disabilities. Design: Cross-sectional survey. Setting: Community. Participants: Ethnic Chinese mothers (N = 261) with children with disabilities of any age residing in Australia, Singapore, or Taiwan. Outcomes and measures: Health Promoting Activities Scale, Personal Wellbeing Index, Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale; Kessler Psychological Distress Scale, Parental Perceptions of Public Attitudes Scale, and Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support. Results: Moderate to strong correlations were found between mental well-being and all measures. The frequency of participation in health-promoting activities was a predictor of mental well-being (β = .21, p = .001). Perceived support was the strongest predictor of participation in health-promoting activities (β = .25, p = .005), mental well-being (β = .39, p < .001), and personal well-being (β = .45, p < .001). Perceived stigma predicted psychological distress (β = .32, p < .001) and mental well-being (β = -0.29, p < .001). Conclusions and relevance: Perceived support and stigma affected mothers' participation in health-promoting activities and well-being. Therapists can facilitate mothers' engagement in health-promoting activities and develop strategies to address stigma and enhance support. Plain-Language Summary: This research highlights factors that affect the well-being of ethnic Chinese mothers who have children with disabilities and provides cultural insights for occupational therapists who work with Chinese families. The article also encourages pediatric occupational therapists to address the occupational needs and well-being of mothers in parallel with therapy for their children. We discuss occupation-focused strategies, family-centered perspectives, and health promotion approaches in relation to improving the participation and well-being of ethnic Chinese mothers in their cultural context.

Abstract:Objectives: The purpose of this study is to examine the mediating effects of parenting efficacy and behavior in the relationship between caregivers’ parenting stress and children’s behavioral problems in children’s residential care homes. Methods: The study collected data from 209 caregivers of children’s residential care homes. The study analyzed descriptive statistics and correlation among variables through SPSS (ver. 26.0), and verified mediation effects by using the model 4 of PROCESS Macro (ver. 3.5). Results: First, correlations among parenting stress, efficacy and behavior, and children’s behavioral problem were statistically significant. Second, parenting behavior was proven to have a mediating effect in the relationship between caregivers’ parenting stress and children’s behavioral problems. Conclusions: Based on above results, the study discussed how to relieve parenting stress and reinforce positive parenting behaviors of caregivers for the healthy psychological and social-emotional development of children in child care facilities, and presented suggestions for follow-up studies.

Abstract:This study examines the serial dual mediating effects of marital conflict and self-esteem on the relationship between parenting stress and life satisfaction in parents of school-aged children with chronic conditions. This study aims to present foundational data for developing nursing interventions for parents caring for children with chronic illnesses. Of the 2150 parents who participated in the 13th Panel Study on Korean Children (PSKC), 271 raising a child with a chronic illness were enrolled in the study. The serial dual mediating effect was analyzed using PROCESS macro Model 6. The serial dual mediating effects of parenting stress, marital conflict, and self-esteem on parents' life satisfaction were analyzed. Marital conflict and self-esteem had significant serial multiple mediating effects on the relationship between stress and life satisfaction in fathers (B = −0.11, bootstrap 95% CI = −0.16–−0.06) and mothers (B = −0.06, bootstrap 95% CI = −0.09–−0.03). Our results suggest that marital conflict increases with increasing parenting stress and that increased marital conflict sequentially reduces self-esteem, ultimately diminishing life satisfaction in parents raising a child with a chronic condition. Thus, relevant nursing interventions and social support are essential to boost the life satisfaction of parents raising children with chronic conditions.

Abstract:Purpose: The study aimed to investigate comprehensively the determinants of the quality of life (QOL) of caregivers of children with cerebral palsy (CP) based on the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health for Children and Youth (ICF-CY). Methods: A total of 167 children with CP (mean age 9.06 years, SD 2.61 years) and their caregivers (mean age 40.24 years, SD 5.43 years) participated in this study. The QOL of caregivers was measured with the World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF-Taiwan version (WHOQOL-BREF-TW). The potential determinants of QOL were collected, including child characteristics, caregiver characteristics, and environmental factors from all dimensions of the ICF-CY and analysed using multiple regression models. Results: Four multiple regression models revealed that determinants of the QOL of caregivers of children with CP was multidimensional, encompassing child characteristics (age, type of CP, fine motor impairment, other diseases, behaviour and emotions, visual impairment, hearing impairment), caregiver characteristics (general mental health, parenting stress, marital status, family coping patterns, and socio-economic status), and environmental factors (child's medication, school setting, and current rehabilitation service, caregiver's spouse's age, family life impacts, and domestic helper). Conclusions: Knowledge of the determinants of QOL could serve as a guide in a holistic approach to evaluation and intervention and help plan interventions targeted at these determinants to improve the QOL of caregivers of children with CP. Implications for Rehabilitation Caregivers of children with CP had lower QOL, except the environment QOL. The QOL determinants of caregivers of children with CP are multidimensional, including child characteristics, caregiver characteristics, and environmental factors. In addition to child characteristics of severity of fine motor impairments and emotional and behavioural problems, caregiver characteristics of general mental health, parenting stress, and coping patterns, and environmental factors of family life impacts, and school setting demonstrated important relationships with caregiver QOL.
Association of nurse-mother partnerships with parenting stress and family resilience among South Korean mothers of children with congenital heart disease

Abstract:Purpose: Advances in the management of congenital heart disease (CHD) have significantly decreased mortality rates, indicating a need for continuous care as a chronic condition throughout the child's lifespan. This study examined the association of nurse-mother partnerships with parenting stress and family resilience among South Korean mothers of children with CHD. Design and methods: This descriptive study involved 93 mothers of children aged six years or younger with CHD admitted to a hospital. Data were collected from September to November 2020 and analyzed using SPSS/WIN (version 29.0) for t-tests, analyses of variance, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analyses. Results: The means and standard deviations of the nurse-mother partnership, parenting stress, and family resilience were 4.13 ± 0.47, 76.98 ± 16.6, and 56.54 ± 7.86 points, respectively. Parenting stress increased as the number of hospitalizations and surgeries increased and with complex types of CHD. Nurse-mother partnerships were stronger with longer hospital stays. Family resilience was higher with younger children, fewer rehospitalizations, and shorter hospital stays. A positive correlation was found between nurse-mother partnerships and family resilience, and a negative correlation between parenting stress and family resilience. Factors influencing parenting stress included family resilience, rehospitalizations, and complex types of CHD, and those affecting family resilience were nurse-mother partnerships, parenting stress, and the child's age. Conclusion: Nurse-mother partnerships significantly affect family resilience. Practical implications: Enhancing nurse-mother partnerships can improve family resilience, which in turn can reduce parenting stress, thus offering guidance for future nursing interventions.
Effectiveness of Family-Professional Collaboration on Functional Goals Achievement of Children with Cerebral Palsy and Caregivers' Quality of Life and Burden: A Randomized Comparative Study

Abstract:Background: Family-professional collaboration is important to enhance the outcomes for children with cerebral palsy and their caregivers. Aims: This study examined the effect of implementing a family-professional collaboration practice model on children with cerebral palsy and their caregivers. Materials and methods: A randomized, single-blind comparative study included 28 physical therapists, 44 children with cerebral palsy between the ages of 2 and 12 years old, and their caregivers. Physical therapists in the experimental group received training in how to implement collaboration in their therapy sessions over the course of two sessions (3 h each). The children's achievement goal-range rate was measured using the Goal Attainment Scaling, the caregivers' quality of life was assessed using the World Health Organization Quality of Life-Brief, and the caregiver burden was evaluated using the Zarit Burden Interview. Results: All children showed improvement on the Goal Attainment Scaling change rate (p = 0.002), with no significant differences between groups (p < 0.44). However, a group × time interaction was observed. The Children Goal Attainment Scaling rate decreased between the two assessment sessions for children in the control group, while the Goal Attainment Scaling change rate was steady for the experimental group. There were no main effects of time and group or interaction of time × group reported on World Health Organization Quality of Life-Brief domains and no main effect of time on the Zarit Burden Interview, but there was a main effect between groups (p = 0.03), with partial eta square = 0.11 in favor of the experimental group. Conclusions: The family-professional collaboration practice model could be a potential practice to positively improve the outcomes in children with cerebral palsy and their caregivers.

Abstract:This study investigated how broader parental factors including parental happiness, parental play engagement, and parenting stress are related to Korean children's happiness and weight status across three years via indirect pathways through the children's energy-related behaviors of healthy and unhealthy food intake, physical activity, and screen time. Data from 1551 Korean parent pairs and 7-year-old children in the Panel Study on Korean Children were analyzed. A path analysis and gender-based multi-group analysis were conducted. Maternal happiness was negatively related to child screen time. Maternal play engagement showed positive concurrent associations with child healthy food intake and physical activity and negative associations with screen time. Maternal parenting stress was negatively related to child healthy eating. There was one significant finding related to fathers' role on children's energy-related behaviors, happiness, and weight status: the positive association between parental happiness and boys' unhealthy food intake. Child screen time was positively related to child weight status and negatively to child happiness at each age. Broader maternal parenting factors can serve as a protective factor for childhood happiness and weight status in 7-to-9-year-olds through being associated with a reduction in child screen time.

Abstract:This study focuses on how parenting stress mediates the relationship between basic psychological needs and parenting behaviors in mothers with infants. The study also looks at how social support on social media might moderate this mediated relationship. To empirically verify a moderated mediation pathway, data were collected from 304 mothers of children under 3 years of age through paper questionnaires and online questionnaires and were analyzed using simple regression, multiple regression, process macros model 14 and bootstrapping in IBM SPSS Statistics 22 for Windows. The results are as follows. First, mothers’s parenting stress mediated the relationship between basic psychological needs and parenting behaviors. Second, mothers' parenting stress on parenting behavior was moderated by social support on social media. Parenting stress had a greater negative effect on positive parenting behavior when the level of social support on social media was low rather than high. Third, mothers’ social support on social media positively moderated both paths of this mediated relationship. Depending on the level of social support on social media, the indirect effect of basic psychological needs on parenting behaviors through parenting stress was significant. The findings of this study have important theoretical and practical implications for the use of Internet-based social support when managing basic psychological needs and parenting stress in relation to mothers' positive parenting behavior.

Abstract:Parenting styles characterized by sensitivity, warmth, structure, and autonomy support are associated with improved outcomes in children 0–18 with cerebral palsy. Fortunately, parenting style is modifiable and can be leveraged to improve outcomes of children with CP and their families. To date, only a single RCT of a parenting style intervention for parents of children with CP has been published. This is inadequate, particularly considering that CP is the most common physical disability in childhood. The future of CP research involves high-quality studies, including RCTs, of parenting style interventions for parents of children with CP. Such studies could even focus on targeting supportive parenting style characteristics while promoting functional skills in the child.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of challenging behaviors of children with autism on their parents’ quality of life and to examine the moderating effect of stress coping methods on the relationship between challenging behaviors and quality of life. Data of 178 parents of children with autism were collected through a survey. To verify the research problem, descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and hierarchical regression analysis were performed. The results were as follows: First, the challenging behaviors of children with autism showed a negative correlation with their parents’ quality of life, and the parents' stress coping style showed a positive correlation with their quality of life; Second, as a result of analyzing the moderating effect of the stress coping method on the relationship between the challenging behavior of children with autism and their parents’ quality of life, the moderating effect of the stress coping method on the relationship between self-harm and stereotyped behavior and quality of life was insignificant. However, it was found that the moderating effect of the stress coping method was significant in the relationship between destructive behavior and quality of life. Based on the results of this study, basic data for improving the quality of life of parents of children with autism were provided.

Abstract:The mode of action of bulgecin was investigated by examining its bactericidal and bacteriolytic activities, its effect on bacterial morphology, and its interaction with penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). Bulgecin alone did not show any antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Serratia marcescens, but in concert with cefmenoxime, it induced potent growth-inhibitory and bactericidal activities. Electron microscopic examination of E. coli cells exposed to bulgecin combined with cefmenoxime revealed that a bulge developed in the middle of the cell, and additional smaller bulges were formed halfway between the central bulge and the polar ends. At the site of bulge development, vesicular mesosomelike structures appeared in the cytoplasm, the peptidoglycan layer facing them became faint, and the outer membrane protruded to form blebs. These morphological changes were quite different from those caused by the mecillinam-cefmenoxime combination that produces big bulges in E. coli. When S. marcescens was exposed to the combination of bulgecin and cefmenoxime, not only bulge formation, but also branching of the cells was observed. Bulgecin neither showed affinity for any PBPs of E. coli nor affected the binding of cefmenoxime or mecillinam to the PBPs.

Abstract:This study aimed to examine the associations among variables related to the sociocultural context (including social support, parenting stress, and parents' perceived severity of their child's condition), the ease or difficulty of family management, and psychosocial outcomes of children with chronic conditions. This cross-sectional study analyzed a convenience sample of 277 parents of children with chronic diseases who had been receiving follow-up care for at least 6 months at a university hospital located in a metropolitan area. Family members answered a questionnaire on demographics, illness characteristics, perceived severity of the child's chronic condition, social support, the Parenting Stress Index, the Pediatric Symptom Checklist, and the Korean version of the Family Management Measure (FaMM). The six scales of the FaMM were divided into two domains, corresponding to ease and difficulty of family management, respectively. PASW version 18.0 and AMOS version 22.0 with bootstrapping analysis were used. Social support, parenting stress, and perceived disease severity significantly affected both ease and difficulty of family management. Sufficient social support, low parenting stress, and a less severe chronic condition of the child were associated with ease of family management. Both ease and difficulty of family management explained 73.9% of the variance in children's psychosocial problems and showed significant direct effects. Care plans for chronically ill children and their families should be designed to promote positive aspects of family management by decreasing parenting stress and enhancing social support, thereby making family management easier and reducing the risk of psychosocial problems in children with chronic conditions.

Abstract:Introduction Participation in personally significant occupations often contributes to quality of life. Parenting a child with difficulties in sensory processing may present challenges that can affect subjective and objective components of parental participation, thus possibly decreasing their quality of life. This study aimed to compare these components between mothers of children with and without difficulties in sensory processing and explore their relationship with maternal quality of life. Methods Seventy mothers of children aged 3–8 years with (50%) and without difficulties in sensory processing completed questionnaires measuring subjective occupational experience, objective frequency of participation in health promoting activities, and quality of life. No consumer or community involvement occurred. Results Satisfaction with participation competence as well as objective frequency of participation in health promoting activities among mothers from the study group was found to be significantly lower than the control group. Additionally, a significant moderately strong correlation was found between these variables and the quality of life of all mothers. Conclusions Subjective and objective participation in health promoting activities is lower in mothers of children with difficulties in sensory processing. Additionally, the quality of life in all mothers was linked to their perceived capability and frequency of engagement in health‐promoting activities. Raising awareness to the experience of mothers of children with challenges in sensory processing may help bring to attention the importance of enhancing mothers' engagement in health‐promoting activities. PLAIN LANGUAGE SUMMARY Mothering a child with difficulties in sensory processing can influence parents' emotional states and sense of competence, affecting how mothers take part in activities that support their health and quality of life. In this study, 70 mothers of children aged 3–8, with and without difficulties in sensory processing, were asked about how often they participate in activities that promote their health, their experiences, and about their quality of life. The mothers of children with difficulties in sensory processing felt less confident in their abilities and did fewer activities that support their health. Also, in all the mothers, their quality of life was related to how competent they feel and how often they performed these types of activities. This shows how important it is to support mothers of children with sensory processing difficulties helping them feel confident and join in activities that support their health. It is a reminder that family‐focussed intervention is key to making sure mothers are doing well too.
