Abstract:Through a United States Department of Agriculture Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service (USDA CSREES) Higher Education Challenge Grant, a team of teaching faculty and librarians at Rutgers University developed an interdisciplinary course, “Food and Nutrition Business Information and Communication.” The course employed an active learning approach that involved a unique collaboration between various academic disciplines; the Rutgers University Libraries; the School of Communication, Information, and Library Studies (SCILS); and the Rutgers Food Manufacturing Technology Facility (FMT). In the course, teams of students from the departments involved worked collaboratively to help solve an actual research problem from industry partners working at FMT. Three examples of student problem solving are presented and assessed using the rubric developed for the course. The course actively involves librarians and demonstrates the importance of information literacy skills in today's information economy.
Interprofessional collaboration between health sciences librarians and health professions faculty to implement a book club discussion for incoming students

Abstract:Background: The following case example provides an overview of one innovative way to engage health professions faculty with health sciences librarians in the development of an interprofessional book discussion and identifies strategies to address implementation challenges. Academic health sciences librarians worked with the Interprofessional Education (IPE) Steering Committee to organize interprofessional book discussion groups for incoming health professions students. This inaugural book discussion brought together students and faculty of different disciplines to engage students in "learning from, with, and about" other professions. Case presentation: When Breath Becomes Air, by Paul Kalanithi, allowed involved discussions on important health sciences issues. The project included outreach, designing pre- and post-surveys, scheduling participants, and communicating with all participants before, during, and after the event. A total of seventy-nine students and thirty-six faculty, representing all health professions schools, participated in the small group IPE book discussions over two weeks. Conclusions: Small group book discussions have been shown to be an effective tool to engage students and faculty in IPE. The results of the participant surveys were positive, and the IPE Steering Committee found value in including health sciences librarians throughout the process. Lessons learned from the pilot project include needing an efficient scheduling system, strongly communicating at all stages of the project, and starting the planning process months ahead of time. The IPE Steering Committee plans to conduct similar book discussions every fall semester moving forward and explore options for other IPE events.

Abstract:When creating information literacy instruction for distance learners; location, preferred use, technological skills, availability of online resources, and confidence in information-seeking skills and behaviors factor into providing service. This study established areas in which online, traditional, and hybrid nursing students displayed confidence and identified places where students might be weaker in their understanding of how to use library services. The objective was to create pedagogical opportunities whereby students could gain information literacy skills using the Association of College and Research Libraries Framework. These skills will strengthen students' understanding the use of and access to library resources, regardless of location.
Promoting nutrition literacy in children: a case study of a community partnership between a university and an elementary school

Abstract:Background: Health literacy outreach is commonplace within public and hospital libraries but less so in academic libraries, where it is often viewed as not integral. Academic health science libraries may collaborate with public libraries to provide public health information literacy programming or "train the trainer" sessions, but examples of academic health science librarians leading community health initiatives are still limited. Case presentation: This case report discusses a collaborative project between Gonzaga's Foley Center Library, the School of Nursing and Human Physiology, and a local elementary school to promote health literacy for students and their families, led by an Academic Health Sciences Librarian. The project scope included delivering nutrition education to elementary school students and their families, but pandemic closures limited plans for in-person programming. Conversations with stakeholders led to additional project opportunities, including tabling at the local block party, collaborating on a campus visit for 5th and 6th graders, supporting middle school cooking classes, and the creation of a toolkit for elementary and middle school teachers to support curriculum about healthy body image and potential disordered eating. Conclusion: This project demonstrates one example of how academic libraries can partner with other campus departments to support health literacy outreach in their local communities. The pandemic made planning for in-person programming tenuous, but by expanding meetings to include staff from other areas of the university, the project team was able to tap into additional outreach opportunities. This work fostered close relationships with the local elementary school, providing the groundwork for collaborative health programming in the future, though more thorough assessment is suggested for future projects.

Abstract:Linking quality information within an electronic medical record or patient electronic record is not a new concept to health sciences librarians. Over time LATCH (Literature Attached to the Chart), InfoButtons, Clinical-e, Digital Libraries, Ask-A-Librarian, and MyChart information links have brought access by librarians to information resources within the electronic and patient health records. Bringing information to the fingertips of the patient care team members and patients and their families builds health literacy. It offers the opportunity to learn and make informed decisions about diagnostic tests, diseases and conditions, drugs and other therapies. This column highlights these electronic enhancements and the partnerships the health science librarians had with IS departments to bring these to fruition.

Abstract:In 2017, 120 University West nursing students wrote a scientific report as an examination. Merely 30 students passed on their first attempt and one of the identified shortcomings concerned information literacy. In collaboration with the course coordinators, the liaison librarian modified the course design adding new contents as well as new assignments to create a kickstart for the students who lack the information literacy required in higher education. The module in information literacy training was extended to provide the students with the skills needed for successful results and thus making them better equipped for the rest of their studies, as well as for lifelong learning. This best practice article accounts for the course development, focusing on library instruction. Furthermore, it posits that the principles of andragogy, student activating methods and the united effort to meet the students where they are, have enhanced their learning process and consequently their information literacy. In 2020 and 2021, the students who passed the scientific report examination on their first attempt more than doubled. Due to librarian involvement, new pedagogical approaches, and a fruitful collaboration with course coordinators, these students’ information literacy skills seem to have improved.

Using Nursing and Information Literacy Standards to Design an Online Learning Experience

Abstract:Background: Although evidence-based practice is a tenet of nursing education, students struggle to learn information literacy skills that transition to practice. This quality improvement project created an online learning experience for prelicensure baccalaureate nursing students to increase their ability to locate and critically appraise evidence. Method: A framework based on nursing and information literacy standards was developed to establish baccalaureate-level information literacy knowledge and skills. This framework and cognitive constructivism were used to design a learning experience. The intervention was integrated into a research and theory course. Results: Students demonstrated a higher level of competence in identifying types of sources and using information ethically but had a lower level of competence in defining their information needs and locating relevant resources. Conclusion: Findings support the positive effects of an online learning experience to increase competence in the knowledge and skills expected of information-literate baccalaureate-prepared nurses. Abstract:As part of a system-wide initiative to advance evidence-based practice among clinicians, graduate students, and educators, the New York University Division of Nursing embarked on a curricular initiative to integrate components of information literacy in all core courses of the master's program. Increasing competency in information literacy is the foundation for evidence-based practice and provides nursing professionals with the skills to be literate consumers of information in an electronic environment. Competency in information literacy includes an understanding of the architecture of information and the scholarly process; the ability to navigate among a variety of print and electronic tools to effectively access, search, and critically evaluate appropriate resources; synthesize accumulated information into an existing body of knowledge; communicate research results clearly and effectively; and appreciate the social issues and ethical concerns related to the provision, dissemination, and sharing of information. In collaboration with the New York University Division of Libraries' Health Sciences Librarian, instructional modules in information literacy relevant to each of the 5 core nursing master's courses were developed, complemented by a Web-based tutorial: http://library.nyu.edu/research/health/tutorial. The Web site is multifaceted, with fundamentals for the beginner, as well as more complex content for the advanced user. Course assignments were designed to promote specific competencies in information literacy and strategies for evaluating the strength of the evidence found. A survey of information literacy competencies, which assessed students' knowledge, misconceptions, and use of electronic information resources, was administered when students entered the program and at 1-year intervals thereafter.
Impacts of educational interventions of librarian instruction on health information seeking attitudes and behaviors in an employee wellness program

Abstract:Objective: Health literacy and its potential impacts on the wellbeing of patrons remain a highly regarded objective among health science and medical librarians when considering learning outcomes of patron communities. Librarians are positioned to champion literacy instruction activities. This study aimed to examine health information seeking attitudes and behaviors in an academic-based employee wellness program before and after health literacy workshops were developed and facilitated by an academic health sciences librarian. Methods: The intervention included instruction informed by Don Nutbeam's Health Literacy Framework and the Research Triangle Institute's Health Literacy Conceptual Framework. Sixty-five participants obtained through convenience sampling attended workshops and were invited to respond to pre- and post-session surveys. Using a quantitative quasi-experimental methodology, surveys collected health literacy indicators including preferred sources and handling practices of in-person and online health information. Results: Findings indicated workshops influenced information seeking behaviors as participants documented a decrease in social media use for health and wellness information (-36%) and medical information (-13%). An increase in the usage of consumer health databases (like Medline Plus) was also indicated post-workshop for health and wellness information (18%) and medical information (31%). Conclusion: Favorable impacts are evident in this small-scale study; however, more research is needed to confirm the influence of these methods on larger and more diverse populations. Librarians should continue to develop and disseminate theory-informed tools and methods aimed at engaging various communities in constructive health information seeking practices.

Abstract:The acquisition of health literacy levels is preponderant in enabling citizens to access, understand, and use health-related information in a more conscious and responsible way in making health decisions. The ACP model—assertiveness, clarity, and positivity—has revealed numerous positive results in health, an excellent contribution to health literacy, as it favors the acquisition of communication skills and therapeutic relationship between health professionals and patients. The use of pedagogical audiovisual techniques (PAT) is one of the best educational strategies in health and facilitates digital dissemination. This project aimed to raise the awareness of health professionals, through the PAT. As a methodology, the authors follow a literature review and the functional, interactive, and critical literacy model. They applied this PAT to health professionals, associated with a knowledge monitoring instrument. The use of the ACP model promotes an improvement in the quality of care provided and, in turn, resulting positive results in health.
A Study of Ion Pairing in Acetonitrile Solutions Containing Magnesium Perchlorate Using ATR-FTIR Spectroscopy

Abstract:Abstract : A study of ion pairing for Mg(C104)2 dissolved in acetonitrile has been carried out using attenuated total reflection FTIR spectroscopy. The present results indicate that the coordination number for ligands around the Mg2+ ion is approximately four, and not six as previously reported Ion pairing is relatively strong with 70 percent of the Mg2+ ions forming contact ion pairs with on perchlorate ion. The spectral characteristics of acetonitrile associated with Mg2+ have been clearly distinguished from those of the free molecule. By comparing spectra in deuterated and protonated solvents, it has been shown for the first time in solution, that the ion paired perchlorate ion has an absorption band at 933 cm-1. The effect of Fermi interaction on the position of the blue shifted C = N band for coordinated acetonitrile is examined and discussed with respect to determination of the effect of the cation charge/radius ratio on the shifted band.

Abstract:This article describes a community-based health information partnership to address health literacy and health information inequalities in marginalized communities. Public health, medical, literacy, and library practitioners promote health literacy through outreach, training, and professional development activities in community settings. They create learning environments for people to develop the necessary knowledge and skills to better understand health information and health policy so they can make decisions concerning personal and community health. Outreach activities focus on visits to neighborhood health centers, health fairs, health exhibits at union meetings and conferences; training programs involve hands-on, peer-led computer classes for people living with HIV and for the general public; and professional development programs connect librarians, health providers, public health workers, and literacy teachers in joint planning and learning. Several learners currently participate in and lead community health education programs and HIV advocacy. The coalition's strength develops from strongly shared objectives, an absence of territoriality, and a core active leadership group.
Health sciences librarians' instructional engagement in continuing education: a scoping review

Abstract:Objective: Healthcare professionals (HCPs) have an ongoing need for continuing education (CE) while Health Science Librarians (HSLs), accustomed to supporting a range of learning needs in a variety of contexts, are well situated to provide CE that addresses information retrieval, literacy, management, and more. To better understand the extent of HSL delivered CE activities, we undertook a scoping review to determine how HSLs instruct practicing HCPs in support of their CE. Methods: We searched for published and unpublished literature sources including PubMed (NCBI), Embase (Elsevier); Dissertations and Theses Global (ProQuest); CINAHL (EBSCO); Library, Information Science and Technology Abstracts (EBSCO); and Library Literature and Information Science Full Text (EBSCO). To identify unpublished sources, we searched the internet using Google and contacted two health sciences library listservs. We also performed backwards and forwards searching of our included sources. Results: Our database searches yielded 4842 sources, and we retrieved an additional 579 sources through supplementary retrieval methods. After duplicate removal and screening, we included 105 sources in this review. The included sources were published between 1970 to 2021 and covered a range of topics such as searching methods and tools, critical appraisal, and many more. Those related to evidence-based practice (EBP) appeared around 2001 and bibliometrics and bioinformatics arose after 2016. Publications depicting HSLs teaching CE most commonly occurred in academic settings. The most common population taught was nurses, followed by physicians. Most sources did not report using an information literacy framework or instructional design model, undertaking needs assessments, or reporting formal objectives or assessment. Conclusion: While HSLs are active supporters of EBP, we need to apply the same principles to our own professional practice. Formal structure of programming and program assessment combined with clear, detailed reporting can help to build a more robust evidence base to support future CE provision.
A Novel Simulation Program for Interprofessional Health Literacy Training

Abstract:Effective communication with patients and between members of the health care team are important strategies to enhance health care outcomes. Despite the prevalence of low health literacy and associated risks in the population, health professionals are often not trained adequately in health literacy communication practices. The purpose of this pilot program is to determine if offering learners an opportunity to practice health literacy communication techniques in a simulated patient care team can increase skills, attitudes, and confidence in this important area of patient care. We implemented a novel, team-based interprofessional Objective Structured Clinical Examination (iOSCE) focused on health literacy. Evaluation took place on three levels: student self-assessment of health literacy communication skills and beliefs about interprofessional teamwork, standardized patient assessment of skills during the clinical encounter, and observer assessment of interprofessional teamwork. Statistically significant gains were seen in students' health literacy communication confidence, as well as beliefs, attitudes and understanding of interprofessional teamwork. The aim of this article is to describe our pilot health literacy iOSCE findings. This pilot shows that an OSCE is an effective assessment tool for a mix of health professional learners at different levels to demonstrate health literacy practices in an interprofessional teamwork environment. Abstract:Background: In a flipped, required first-year drug information course, students were taught the systematic approach to answering drug information questions, commonly utilized resources, and literature searching. As co-coordinator, a librarian taught three weeks of the course focused on mobile applications, development of literature searching skills, and practicing in PubMed. Course assignments were redesigned in 2019 based on assessment best practices and replaced weekly multiple-choice quizzes used in prior iterations of the course. Case presentation: Following two weeks of literature searching instruction, students were assigned a drug information question that would serve as the impetus for the search they conducted. Students (n=66) had one week to practice and record a screencast video of their search in PubMed. Students narrated their video with an explanation of the actions being performed and were assessed using a twenty-point rubric created by the course coordinator and librarian. The librarian also created general feedback videos for each question by recording screencasts while performing the literature searches and clarifying troublesome aspects for students. The librarian spent about twenty-four hours grading and six hours writing scripts, recording, and editing feedback videos. Conclusion: Most students performed well on the assignment and few experienced technical difficulties. Instructors will use this assignment and feedback method in the future. Screencast videos proved an innovative way to assess student knowledge and to provide feedback on literature searching assignments. This method is transferrable to any medical education setting and could be used across all health professions to improve information literacy skills.
