Abstract:Universal behavior is a typical emergent feature of critical systems. A paramount model of the nonequilibrium critical behavior is the directed bond percolation process that exhibits an active-to-absorbing state phase transition in the vicinity of a percolation threshold. Fluctuations of the ambient environment might affect or destroy the universality properties completely. In this work, we assume that the random environment can be described by means of compressible velocity fluctuations. Using field-theoretic models and renormalization group methods, we investigate large-scale and long-time behavior. Altogether, 11 universality classes are found, out of which 4 are stable in the infrared limit and thus macroscopically accessible. In contrast to the model without velocity fluctuations, a possible candidate for a realistic three-dimensional case, a regime with relevant short-range noise, is identified. Depending on the dimensionality of space and the structure of the turbulent flow, we calculate critical exponents of the directed percolation process. In the limit of the purely transversal random force, critical exponents comply with the incompressible results obtained by previous authors. We have found intriguing nonuniversal behavior related to the mutual effect of compressibility and advection.
Simulations of stochastic fluid dynamics near a critical point in the phase diagram

Abstract:We present simulations of stochastic fluid dynamics in the vicinity of a critical endpoint belonging to the universality class of the Ising model. This study is motivated by the challenge of modeling the dynamics of critical fluctuations near a conjectured critical endpoint in the phase diagram of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). We focus on the interaction of shear modes with a conserved scalar density, which is known as model H. We show that the observed dynamical scaling behavior depends on the correlation length and the shear viscosity of the fluid. As the correlation length is increased or the viscosity is decreased we observe a cross-over from the dynamical exponent of critical diffusion, $z\simeq 4$, to the expected scaling exponent of model H, $z\simeq 3$. We use our method to investigate time-dependent correlation function of non-Gaussian moments $M^n(t)$ of the order parameter. We find that the relaxation time depends in non-trivial manner on the power $n$.

Abstract:The critical dynamics of Model H with a conserved order parameter coupled to a transverse momentum density which describes the gas-liquid or binary-fluid transitions is investigated within the functional renormalization group approach formulated on the closed time path. According to the dynamic scaling analysis, Model H and QCD critical end point belong to the same dynamic universality class in the critical region. The higher-order correction of the transport coefficient $\bar\lambda$ and shear viscosity $\bar\eta$ arising from mode-couplings are obtained by calculating the two-point correlation functions. The flow equation of a dimensionless coupling constant for nondissipative interactions is derived to look for the fixed-point solution of the system. The scaling relation between the critical exponent of the transport coefficient and that of the shear viscosity is estimated. Finally, the dynamic critical exponent $z$ is obtained as a function of the spatial dimension $d$.

Abstract:We theoretically investigate superfluidity in a strongly interacting Fermi gas confined to two dimensions at finite temperature. Using a Gaussian pair fluctuation theory in the superfluid phase, we calculate the superfluid density and determine the critical temperature and chemical potential at the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. We propose that the transition can be unambiguously demonstrated in cold-atom experiments by stirring the superfluid Fermi gas using a red detuned laser beam, to identify the characteristic jump in the local Landau critical velocity at the superfluid-normal interface, as the laser beam moves across the cloud.

Abstract:By means of the field-theoretic renormalization group, we study the damping of the viscosity coefficient near the superfluid phase transition. We utilize the fact that in the infrared region, the complex model used to describe the phase transition belongs to the same universality class as the well-known stochastic model A. This allows us a determination of the critical behavior of viscosity using composite operators for model A. Our analysis is based on the $\varepsilon$-expansion near the upper critical dimension $d_c = 4$ of model A. The critical exponent of viscosity is then calculated from the critical dimensions of composite operators of massless two-component model A. In particular, we present results for critical dimensions of a selected class of composite operators with the canonical dimension $8$ to the leading order.

Abstract:We describe a numerical method for simulating stochastic fluid dynamics near a critical point in the Ising universality class. This theory is known as model H, and is expected to govern the non-equilibrium dynamics of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) near a possible critical endpoint of the phase transition between a hadron liquid and the quark-gluon plasma. The numerical algorithm is based on a Metropolis scheme, and automatically ensures that the distribution function of the hydrodynamic variables in equilibrium is independent of the transport coefficients and only governed by the microscopic free energy. We verify dynamic scaling near the critical point of a two and three-dimensional fluid and extract the associated critical exponent $z$. We find $z\simeq 3$ in three dimensions, and $z\simeq 2$ for a two-dimensional fluid. In a finite system, we observe a crossover between the mean field value $z=4$ and the true critical exponent $z\simeq 3$ ($z \simeq 2$ in $d=2$). This crossover is governed by the values of the correlation length and the renormalized shear viscosity.

Abstract:We provide a joint theoretical and experimental investigation of the temperature dependence of the collective oscillations of first sound nature exhibited by a highly elongated harmonically trapped Fermi gas at unitarity, including the region below the critical temperature for superfluidity. Differently from the lowest axial breathing mode, the hydrodynamic frequencies of the higher-nodal excitations show a temperature dependence, which is calculated starting from Landau two-fluid theory and using the available experimental knowledge of the equation of state. The experimental results agree with high accuracy with the predictions of theory and provide the first evidence for the temperature dependence of the collective frequencies near the superfluid phase transition.
Dynamic critical behavior of the chiral phase transition from the real-time functional renormalization group

Abstract:In the chiral limit the complicated many-body dynamics around the second-order chiral phase transition of two-flavor QCD can be understood by appealing to universality. We present a novel formulation of the real-time functional renormalization group that describes the stochastic hydrodynamic equations of motion for systems in the same dynamic universality class, which corresponds to Model G in the Halperin-Hohenberg classification. Our approach preserves all relevant symmetries of such systems with reversible mode couplings. We show that the calculations indeed produce the non-trivial value $z=d/2$ for the dynamic critical exponent, where $d$ is the number of spatial dimensions. From the momentum and temperature dependence of the diffusion coefficient of the conserved charge densities, we extract the dimensionless universal scaling function.

Hydrodynamics and instabilities of relativistic superfluids at finite superflow

Abstract:We study the linear response of relativistic superfluids with a non-zero superfluid velocity. For sufficiently large superflow, an instability develops via the crossing of a pole of the retarded Green's functions to the upper half complex frequency plane. We show that this is caused by a local thermodynamic instability, i.e. when an eigenvalue of the static susceptibility matrix (the second derivatives of the free energy) diverges and changes sign. The onset of the instability occurs when $\partial_{\zeta}(n_s\zeta)=0$, with $\zeta$ the norm of the superfluid velocity and $n_s$ the superfluid density. The Landau instability for non-relativistic superfluids such as Helium 4 also coincides with the non-relativistic version of this criterion. We then turn to gauge/gravity duality and show that this thermodynamic instability criterion applies equally well to strongly-coupled superfluids. In passing, we compute holographically a number of transport coefficients parametrizing deviations out-of-equilibrium in the hydrodynamic regime and demonstrate that the gapless quasinormal modes of the dual planar black hole match those predicted by superfluid hydrodynamics.

Abstract:We propose that the dynamics of supercooled liquids and the formation of glasses can be understood from the existence of a zero-temperature dynamical critical point. To support our proposal, we derive a dynamic field theory for a generic kinetically constrained model, which we expect to describe the dynamics of a supercooled liquid. We study this field theory using the renormalization group (RG). Its long time behavior is dominated by a zero-temperature critical point, which for d>2 belongs to the directed percolation universality class. Molecular dynamics simulations seem to confirm the existence of dynamic scaling behavior consistent with the RG predictions.

Revealing the Superfluid Lambda Transition in the Universal Thermodynamics of a Unitary Fermi Gas

Abstract:We have observed the superfluid phase transition in a strongly interacting Fermi gas via high-precision measurements of the local compressibility, density and pressure down to near-zero entropy. Our data completely determine the universal thermodynamics of strongly interacting fermions without any fit or external thermometer. The onset of superfluidity is observed in the compressibility, the chemical potential, the entropy, and the heat capacity. In particular, the heat capacity displays a characteristic lambda-like feature at the critical temperature of $T_c/T_F = 0.167(13)$. This is the first clear thermodynamic signature of the superfluid transition in a spin-balanced atomic Fermi gas. Our measurements provide a benchmark for many-body theories on strongly interacting fermions, relevant for problems ranging from high-temperature superconductivity to the equation of state of neutron stars.

Universality, scaling and collapse in supercritical fluids

Abstract:The Supercritical Fluid (SCF) is known to exhibit salient dynamic and thermodynamic crossovers and inhomogeneous molecular distribution. But the question as to what basic physics underlies these microscopic and macroscopic anomalies remains open. Here, using an order parameter extracted by machine learning, the fraction of gas-like (or liquid-like) molecules, we find simplicity and universality in SCF: First, all isotherms of a given fluid collapse onto a single master curve described by a scaling relation. The observed power law holds from the high-temperature and pressure regime down to the critical point where it diverges. Second, phase diagrams of different compounds collapse onto their master curves by the same scaling exponent, thereby demonstrating a putative law of corresponding supercritical states in simple fluids. The reported results support a model of the SCF as a mixture of two interchangeable microstates, whose spatiotemporal dynamics gives rise to unique macroscopic properties.

Near-critical confined fluids and Ising films: density-matrix renormalization-group study

Abstract:Two-dimensional Ising strips subject to identical surface fields h(1)=h(2) > or =0 are studied for temperatures above and below the bulk critical temperature T(c) and a range of bulk fields h by means of the density-matrix renormalization-group method. In the case of nonvanishing surface fields, the near-critical behavior of the solvation force f(solv), total adsorption Gamma, inverse longitudinal correlation length xi(parallel)( -1) and specific heat C(H) is strongly influenced by the (pseudo) capillary condensation that occurs below T(c). We obtain scaling functions of f(solv), Gamma, and xi(parallel)(-1). C(H) exhibits a weakly rounded singularity on crossing the pseudocoexistence line. We contrast these results with those for the case of free boundaries where, for temperatures slightly below T(c), f(solv) and C(H) exhibit a sharp extremum away from h=0. Our results have direct repercussions for the properties of near-critical Ising films in three dimensions and we argue that the long-ranged solvation (Casimir) force in confined fluids should be more attractive in the neighborhood of the capillary critical point than exactly at the bulk critical point.
Superfluid stiffness within Eliashberg theory: the role of vertex corrections

Abstract:In this work we consider the superfluid stiffness of a generically non-Galilean invariant interacting system and investigate under what conditions the stiffness may nonetheless approach the Galilean-invariant value $n/m$. Within Eliashberg theory we find that the renormalized stiffness is approximately given by $n/m$ in the case when the $l=0$ and $l=1$ components of the effective Fermi-surface projected interaction are approximately equal over a range of frequencies. This holds, in particular, when the interaction is peaked at zero momentum transfer. We examine this result through three complementary lenses: the $\delta (\omega)$ term in the conductivity, the phase dependence of the Luttinger-Ward free energy, and the coupling of the amplitude and phase sectors in the Hubbard-Stratonovich collective mode action. From these considerations we show that the value of the stiffness is determined by the strength of renormalization of the current vertex and that the latter can be interpreted as the shift of the self-consistent solution due to flow of the condensate, or alternatively as coupling of the phase mode to $l=1$ fluctuations of the order parameter. We highlight that even though the superfluid stiffness in some non-Galilean systems approaches the Galilean value, this is not enforced by symmetry, and in general the stiffness may be strongly suppressed from its BCS value. As a corollary we obtain the generic form of the phase action within Eliashberg theory and charge and spin Ward identities for a superconductor with frequency dependent gap function.

Abstract:All fluids exhibit large property-variations near the critical point in a region identified as the anomalous state. The anomaly starts in the liquid and extends well into the supercritical state, which can be identified thermodynamically using the Gibbs free energy (g). The specific heat, isobaric expansion, and isothermal compressibility parameters governing the transitions are: (cp/T), (vβ), and (vκ), rather cp, β, and κ. They are essentially the second-order derivatives of g and have two extrema (minimum, maximum); only maxima reported ever. When applied to the van der Waals fluid, these extrema exhibit closed loops on the phase-diagram to satisfy d3g = 0 and map the anomalous region. The predicted liquid-like to gas-like transitions are related to the ridges reported earlier, and the Widom delta falls between these loops. Evidently, in the anomalous region, both the liquid and the supercritical fluid need to be treated differently. Beyond the anomalous states, the supercritical fluids show monotonic, gradual changes in their properties. The analysis for argon, methane, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and water validates the thermodynamic model, supports the stated observations, and identifies their delimiting pressures and temperatures for the anomalous states. It also demonstrates the applicability of the law of corresponding states. Notably, the critical point is a state where d3g = 0, the anomaly in the fluid's properties/behavior is maximal, and the governing parameters approach infinity. Also the following are presented: (a) the trajectory of the liquid–vapor line toward the melt-solid boundary and (b) a modified phase diagram (for water) exhibiting the anomalous region.

Critical Behavior and Collective Modes at the Superfluid Transition in Amorphous Systems

Abstract:We investigate the critical behavior and the dynamics of the amplitude (Higgs) mode close to the superfluid-insulator quantum phase transition in an amorphous system (i.e., a system subject to topological randomness). In particular, we map the two-dimensional Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian defined on a random Voronoi-Delaunay lattice onto a (2+1)-dimensional layered classical XY model with correlated topological disorder. We study the resulting model by laying recourse to classical Monte Carlo simulations. We specifically focus on the scalar susceptibility of the order parameter to study the dynamics of the amplitude mode. To do so, we harness the maximum entropy method to perform the analytic continuation of the scalar susceptibility to real frequencies. Our analysis shows that the amplitude mode remains delocalized in the presence of such topological disorder, quite at odds with its behavior in generic disordered systems, where the randomness localizes the Higgs mode. Furthermore, we show that the critical behavior of the topologically disordered system is identical to that of its translationally invariant counterpart, consistent with a modified Harris criterion. This suggests that the localization of the collective excitations in the presence of disorder is tied to the critical behavior of the quantum phase transition rather than a simple Anderson-localization-type interference mechanism.

On the mass transfer in the 3D Pitaevskii model

Abstract:We examine a micro-scale model of superfluidity derived by Pitaevskii in 1959 which describes the interacting dynamics between superfluid He-4 and its normal fluid phase. This system consists of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation and the incompressible, inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equations, coupled to each other via a bidirectional nonlinear relaxation mechanism. The coupling permits mass/momentum/energy transfer between the phases, and accounts for the conversion of superfluid into normal fluid. We prove the existence of weak solutions in $\mathbb{T}^3$ for a power-type nonlinearity, beginning from small initial data. The main challenge is to control the inter-phase mass transfer in order to ensure the strict positivity of the normal fluid density, while obtaining time-independent a priori estimates.

Abstract:We derive a dynamic field theory for a kinetically constrained model, based on the Fredrickson--Andersen model, which we expect to describe the properties of an Arrhenius (strong) supercooled liquid at the coarse-grained level. We study this field theory using the renormalization group. For mesoscopic length and time scales, and for space dimension d \geq 2, the behaviour of the model is governed by a zero-temperature dynamical critical point in the directed percolation universality class. We argue that in d=1 its behaviour is that of compact directed percolation. We perform detailed numerical simulations of the corresponding Fredrickson-Andersen model on the lattice in various dimensions, and find reasonable quantitative agreement with the field theory predictions.

Abstract:We present a standard field theoretical derivation of the dynamic density and spin linear response functions of a dilute superfluid Fermi gas in the BCS–BEC crossover in both three and two dimensions. The derivation of the response functions is based on the elegant functional path integral approach which allows us to calculate the density–density and spin–spin correlation functions by introducing the external sources for the density and the spin density. Since the generating functional cannot be evaluated exactly, we consider two gapless approximations which ensure a gapless collective mode (Goldstone mode) in the superfluid state: the BCS–Leggett mean-field theory and the Gaussian-pair-fluctuation (GPF) theory. In the mean-field theory, our results of the response functions agree with the known results from the random phase approximation. We further consider the pair fluctuation effects and establish a theoretical framework for the dynamic responses within the GPF theory. We show that the GPF response theory naturally recovers three kinds of famous diagrammatic contributions: the Self-Energy contribution, the Aslamazov–Lakin contribution, and the Maki–Thompson contribution. We also show that unlike the equilibrium state, in evaluating the response functions, the linear (first-order) terms in the external sources as well as the induced order parameter perturbations should be treated carefully. In the superfluid state, there is an additional order parameter contribution which ensures that in the static and long wavelength limit, the density response function recovers the result of the compressibility (compressibility sum rule). We expect that the f-sum rule is manifested by the full number equation which includes the contribution from the Gaussian pair fluctuations. The dynamic density and spin response functions in the normal phase (above the superfluid critical temperature) are also derived within the Nozières–Schmitt–Rink (NSR) theory.
