Abstract:Using nonequilibrium computer simulations, we study the response of ferromagnetic nanofilaments, consisting of stabilized onedimensional chains of ferromagnetic nanoparticles, under external rotating magnetic fields. In difference with their analogous microscale and stiff counterparts, which have been actively studied in recent years, nonequilibrium properties of rather flexible nanoparticle filaments remain mostly unexplored. By progressively increasing the modeling details, we are able to evidence the qualitative impact of main interactions that can not be neglected at the nanoscale, showing that filament flexibility, thermal fluctuations and hydrodynamic interactions contribute independently to broaden the range of synchronous frequency response in this system. Furthermore, we also show the existence of a limited set of characteristic dynamic filament configurations and discuss in detail the asynchronous response, which at finite temperature becomes probabilistic.

Abstract:Diverse polymer crosslinking techniques allow the synthesis of linear polymer-like structures whose monomers are colloidal particles. In the case where all or part of these colloidal particles are magnetic, one can control the behaviour of these supracolloidal polymers, known as magnetic filaments (MFs), by applied magnetic fields. However, the response of MFs strongly depends on the crosslinking procedure. In the present study, we employ Langevin dynamics simulations to investigate the influence of the type of crosslinking and the distribution of magnetic particles within MFs on their response to an external magnetic field. We found that if the rotation of the dipole moment of particles is not coupled to the backbone of the filament, the impact of the magnetic content is strongly decreased.

Abstract:Understanding the Verwey transition in magnetite (Fe3O4), a strongly correlated magnetic oxide, is a one-century-old topic that recaptures great attention because of the recent spectroscopy studies revealing its orbital details. Here, the modulation of the Verwey transition by tuning the orbital configurations with ionic gating is reported. In epitaxial magnetite thin films, the insulating Verwey state can be tuned continuously to be metallic showing that the low-temperature trimeron states can be controllably metalized by both the gate-induced oxygen vacancies and proton doping. The ionic gating can also reverse the sign of the anomalous Hall coefficient, indicating that the metallization is associated with the presence of a new type of carrier with competing spin. The variable spin orientation associated with the sign reversal is originated from the structural distortions driven by the gate-induced oxygen vacancies.
Molecular Dynamics Simulations of Microscopic Structural Transition and Macroscopic Mechanical Properties of Magnetic Gels

Abstract:Magnetic gels with embedded micro/nano-sized magnetic particles in crosslinked polymer networks can be actuated by external magnetic fields, with changes in their internal microscopic structures and macroscopic mechanical properties. We investigate the responses of such magnetic gels to an external magnetic field, by means of coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations. We find that the dynamics of magnetic particles are determined by the interplay of between magnetic dipole-dipole interactions, polymer elasticity and thermal fluctuations. The corresponding microscopic structures formed by the magnetic particles such as elongated chains can be controlled by the external magnetic field. Furthermore, the magnetic gels can exhibit reinforced macroscopic mechanical properties, where the elastic modulus increases algebraically with the magnetic moments of the particles in the form of $\propto(m-m_{\mathrm{c}})^{2}$ when magnetic chains are formed. This simulation work can not only serve as a tool for studying the microscopic and the macroscopic responses of the magnetic gels, but also facilitate future fabrications and practical controls of magnetic composites with desired physical properties.

Abstract:Research on magnetic particles dispersed in a fluid medium, actuated by a rotating magnetic field, is becoming increasingly active for both lab-on-chip and bio-sensing applications. In this study, we experimentally investigate the behaviour of ferromagnetic filaments in a rotating field. Filaments are synthesized by linking micron-sized ferromagnetic particles with DNA strands. The experiments were conducted under different magnetic field strengths, frequencies and filament sizes, and deformation of the filaments was registered via microscope and camera. The results obtained showed that the body deformation is larger for longer filaments and higher frequencies and lower for larger magnetic field. The angle between the filament tangent at the centre and the magnetic field direction increases linearly with frequency at low-frequency regime. A further increase in the frequency will result in filament movement out of plane when the angle approaches 90 degrees. The experimental results were used to estimate magnetic moment and the bending elasticity of the filament.

Abstract:Flexible ferromagnetic filaments can be used to control the flow on the micro-scale with external magnetic field. To accurately model them, it is crucial to know their parameters such as their magnetization and bending modulus, the latter of which is hard to determine precisely. We present a method how the ferromagnetic filament's shape in a rotating field can be used to determine the magnetoelastic number $Cm$ - the ratio of magnetic to elastic forces. Then once the magnetization of the filament is known, it is possible to determine its bending modulus. The main idea of the method is that $Cm$ is the only parameter that determines whether the filament is straight or whether its tips are bent towards the magnetic field direction. Comparing with numerical solutions, we show that the method results in an error of $15...20\%$ for the determined $Cm$, what is more precise than estimations from other methods. This method will allow to improve the comparability between theoretical filament models and experimental measurements.

Abstract:Magnetic properties of ferromagnetic nanofilms on non-magnetic substrate are examined by computer simulation. The substrate influence is modeled using the two-dimensional Frenkel-Kontorova potential. The film has a cubic crystal lattice. Cases of different ratio for substrate period and ferromagnetic film period are considered. The difference in film and substrate periods results in film deformations. These deformations result in a change in the magnetic properties of the film. The Ising model and the Metropolis algorithm are used for the study of magnetic properties. The dependence of Curie temperature on film thickness and substrate potential parameters is calculated. Cases of different values for the coverage factor are considered. The deformation of the film layers is reduced away from the substrate when it is compressed or stretched. The Curie temperature increases when the substrate is compressed and decreases when the substrate is stretched. This pattern is performed for films with different thicknesses. If the coating coefficient for the film is different from one, periodic structures with an increased or reduced concentration of atoms are formed in the film first layer. These structures are absent in higher layers.

Abstract:Manufacturing new soft materials with specific optical, mechanical and magnetic properties is a significant challenge. Assembling and manipulating colloidal particles at fluid interfaces is a promising way to make such materials. We use lattice-Boltzmann simulations to investigate the response of magnetic ellipsoidal particles adsorbed at liquid-liquid interfaces to external magnetic fields. We provide further evidence for the first-order orientation phase transition predicted by Bresme and Faraudo [Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter 19 (2007), 375110]. We show that capillary interface deformations around the ellipsoidal particle significantly affect the tilt-angle of the particle for a given dipole-field strength, altering the properties of the orientation transition. We propose scaling laws governing this transition, and suggest how to use these deformations to facilitate particle assembly at fluid-fluid interfaces.

Abstract:We present a complete computational study devoted to the deposition of a magnetic binuclear complex on a metallic surface, aimed to obtain insight into the interaction of magnetically coupled complexes with their supporting substrates, as well as their response to external electrical stimuli applied through a surface-molecule-STM molecular junction-like architecture. Our results not only show that the deposition is favorable in two of the four studied orientations, but also, that the magnetic coupling is only slightly perturbed once the complex is adsorbed. We observe that the effects of the applied bias voltage on the magnetic coupling strongly depend on the molecule orientation with respect to the surface and the voltage polarity. Further analysis shows that this behavior is attributable to the stabilization/destabilization of the d-type singly occupied orbitals of the iron centers, reinforced by the strong local electric fields and induced charge densities only present in certain orientations of the deposited molecule and applied voltage polarity.

Magnetic-field-induced Structural Transitions in a Ferrofluid Emulsion

Abstract:A ferrofluid emulsion, subjected to a slowly increasing magnetic field, exhibits a complicated structural behavior: a gas of Brownian particles changes to columnar solid structures due to induced dipole interaction. Two transition (intermediate) structural regimes are observed: (i) randomly distributed chains and particles and (ii) distinct thin columns and randomly distributed chains and particles. Three structural transition magnetic fields are found, one marking each structural transition, from the initial to the final structural regime. A structural diagram of the structural transition magnetic fields, H(C), versus particle volume fractions, straight phi, is constructed experimentally. Theoretical models of scaling calculations, based upon the dominant magnetic interaction in each structural regime, give the three structural transition magnetic-field relations as H(C1) proportional to straight phi(-1/2), H(C2) proportional to straight phi(-1/4), and H(C3) proportional to (straight phi(gamma)/G2)exp(piG/straight phi((gamma/2))), where gamma=0.39 and G=0.29 for our sample. The final end shape of columns and the relative position between columns show that the end-end repulsion between chains is important in the structural formation.
Equilibrium properties of magnetic filament suspensions

Abstract:Langevin dynamics is used to study equilibrium properties of the suspension of magnetic filaments (chains of nanoparticles permanently crosslinked with polymers). It is shown that the filament suspension generally has a larger magnetic susceptibility than the system of unlinked nanoparticles with the same average particle concentration. However, actual susceptibility gain strongly depends on length and flexibility of filaments. It is also shown that in a strong gravitational (centrifugal) field sedimentation profiles of filaments are less homogeneous than that of unlinked particles. The spatial distribution of filaments weakly depends on the intensity of interparticle dipole-dipole interactions.

Simulating the Self-Assembly and Hysteresis Loops of Ferromagnetic Nanoparticles with Sticking of Ligands

Abstract:The agglomeration of ferromagnetic nanoparticles in a fluid is studied using nanoparticle-level Langevin dynamics simulations. The simulations have interdigitation and bridging between ligand coatings included using a computationally-cheap, phenomenological sticking parameter c. The interactions between ligand coatings are shown in this preliminary study to be important in determining the shapes of agglomerates that form. A critical size for the sticking parameter is estimated analytically and via the simulations and indicates where particle agglomerates transition from well-ordered (c is small) to disordered (c is large) shapes. Results are also presented for the hysteresis loops (magnetization versus applied field) for these particle systems in an oscillating magnetic field appropriate for hyperthermia applications. The results show that the clumping of particles has a significant effect on their macroscopic properties, with important consequences on applications. In particular, the work done by an oscillating field on the system has a nonmonotonic dependence on c.

Abstract:Laser-induced magnetization switching in GdFe ferrimagnets strongly depends on the pulse duration. To gain insight into the ferrimagnetic switching process, Landau–Lifshitz–Gilbert (LLG) spin dynamic modeling is performed at an atomistic-level with two sub-lattice systems. The switching dynamics triggered by laser pulses can be considered as two stages: Demagnetization stage by the laser pulse heating and re-magnetization at the cooling down stage after the pulse impulsion. By tuning the laser pulse duration, the intensity of demagnetization can be well controlled, by which the subsequent magnetization switching during the cooling process can be obtained. The simulation results indicate that the occurrence of the transient ferromagnetic-like (TFL) state is necessary during the magnetization switching process. Furthermore, the thermal temperature and heating time play an important role for the ferrimagnetic switching. In the overheating region, the random switching behavior appears because the TFL state is uncontrollable.

Abstract:In recent years, there has been an intense interest in understanding the microscopic mechanism of thermally induced magnetization switching driven by a femtosecond laser pulse. Most of the effort has been dedicated to periodic crystalline structures while the amorphous counterparts have been less studied. By using a multiscale approach, i.e. first-principles density functional theory combined with atomistic spin dynamics, we report here on the very intricate structural and magnetic nature of amorphous Gd-Fe alloys for a wide range of Gd and Fe atomic concentrations at the nanoscale level. Both structural and dynamical properties of Gd-Fe alloys reported in this work are in good agreement with previous experiments. We calculated the dynamic behavior of homogeneous and inhomogeneous amorphous Gd-Fe alloys and their response under the influence of a femtosecond laser pulse. In the homogeneous sample, the Fe sublattice switches its magnetization before the Gd one. However, the temporal sequence of the switching of the two sublattices is reversed in the inhomogeneous sample. We propose a possible explanation based on a mechanism driven by a combination of the Dzyaloshiskii-Moriya interaction and exchange frustration, modeled by an antiferromagnetic second-neighbour exchange interaction between Gd atoms in the Gd-rich region. We also report on the influence of laser fluence and damping effects in the all-thermal switching.
The impact of magnetic field on the conformations of supracolloidal polymer-like structures with super-paramagnetic monomers

Abstract:<p>We investigate the properties of magnetic supracolliodal polymers – magnetic filaments (MFs) – with super-paramagnetic monomers, with and without Van der Waals (VdW) attraction between them. We employ molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to elucidate the impact of crosslinking mechanism on the structural and magnetic response of MFs to an applied external homogeneous magnetic field. We consider two models: plain crosslinking, which results in a flexible backbone; and constrained crosslinking, which provides significant stiffens against bending. We find that for plain crosslinking, even a slight increase of the central attraction leads to collapsed MF conformations. Structures that initially exhibit spherical symmetry evolve into cylindrically symmetric ones, with growing magnetic field strength. Plain crosslinking also allows for conformational bistability. MFs with constrained crosslinking tend to, instead, unravel in field. In both crosslinking scenarios, central attraction is able to hinder low-field magnetic response of MFs, albeit the bistability of plainly crosslinked MFs manifests itself also in the high-field region.</p>

Abstract:Ferromagnets are commonly magnetized by either external magnetic fields or spin polarized currents. The manipulation of magnetization by spin-current occurs through the spin-transfer-torque effect, which is applied, for example, in modern magnetoresistive random access memory. However, the current density required for the spin-transfer torque is of the order of 1 × 106 A·cm−2, or about 1 × 1025 electrons s−1 cm−2. This relatively high current density significantly affects the devices’ structure and performance. Here we demonstrate magnetization switching of ferromagnetic thin layers that is induced solely by adsorption of chiral molecules. In this case, about 1013 electrons per cm2 are sufficient to induce magnetization reversal. The direction of the magnetization depends on the handedness of the adsorbed chiral molecules. Local magnetization switching is achieved by adsorbing a chiral self-assembled molecular monolayer on a gold-coated ferromagnetic layer with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. These results present a simple low-power magnetization mechanism when operating at ambient conditions.

Controllable magnetic anisotropy and ferroelasticity in superconducting FeSe monolayer with surface fluorine adsorption

Abstract:Controllable magnetization in atomically thin two-dimensional magnets is highly desirable for developing spintronics. For FeSe monolayer, its magnetic ground state is not yet fully understood, and the potential in constructing high-speed and advanced devices remains unknown. Using density functional theory calculations, we confirm the spin ordering of monolayer FeSe to be dimer texture. With Fluorine (F) adsorption (F/FeSe), the system exhibits a coverage dependent magnetic anisotropy and multiferroicity which can be attributable to the Jahn-Teller effect, being the benefit to potential spintronic applications. Intriguingly, an inherent coupling between magnetism and ferroelasticity in the most energetically favorable F/FeSe system is proposed. Our study thus not only provides a promising way to control the spintronic properties and construct multiferroics, but also renders F/FeSe an ideal platform for magnetism studies and practical high-performance multifunctional devices.

Abstract:Ferrogels and magnetoelastomers are composite materials obtained by embedding magnetic particles of mesoscopic size in a crosslinked polymeric matrix. They combine the reversible elastic deformability of polymeric materials with the high responsivity of ferrofluids to external magnetic fields. These materials stand out, for example, for large magnetostriction as well as significant increase of the elastic moduli in the presence of external magnetic fields. By means of X-ray micro-computed tomography, position and size of each magnetic particle can be measured with a high degree of accuracy. We here use data extracted from real magnetoelastic samples as input for coarse-grained dipole-spring modeling and calculations to investigate magnetostriction, stiffening, and changes in the normal modes spectrum. More precisely, we assign to each particle a dipole moment proportional to its volume and set a randomized network of springs between them that mimics the behavior of the polymeric elastic matrix. Extending our previously developed methods, we compute the resulting structural changes in the systems, their overall distortions, as well as the frequency-dependent elastic moduli when magnetic interactions are turned on. Particularly, with increasing magnetization, we observe the formation of chain-like aggregates, resulting in significant overall deformations. Interestingly, the static elastic moduli can first show a slight decrease with growing amplitude of the magnetic interactions, before a pronounced increase appears upon the chain formation. The change of the dynamic moduli with increasing magnetization depends on the frequency and can even show nonmonotonic behavior. Overall, we demonstrate how theory and experiments can complement each other to learn more about the dynamic behavior of this interesting class of materials.

Abstract:Successful realization of ferromagnetic nematic liquid crystals has opened up the possibility to experimentally study a completely new set of fundamental physical phenomena. In this contribution we present a detailed investigation of some aspects of the static response and the complex dynamics of ferromagnetic liquid crystals under the application of an external magnetic field. Experimental results are then compared with a macroscopic model. Dynamics of the director were measured by optical methods and analyzed in terms of a theoretical macroscopic model. A dissipative cross-coupling coefficient describing the dynamic coupling between the two system order parameters, the magnetization and the nematic director, is needed to explain the results. In this contribution we examine the dependency of this coefficient on material parameters and the saturation magnetization and the liquid crystal host. Despite the complexity of the system, the theoretical description allows for a proper interpretation of the results and is connected to several microscopic aspects of the colloidal suspension.
