Abstract:Background: Non-optimum weather conditions and air pollution have the potential to increase the risk of atopic dermatitis (AD), but the associations are rarely evaluated, especially in developing countries. Objective: To investigate the independent influence and interaction effects of meteorological factors and air pollutants on the onset of AD. Methods: Daily data on outpatient visits of AD were obtained from Shanghai Dermatology Hospital and comprised 34,633 patients during the period from January 2013 to December 2018. Meteorological conditions and air pollutant concentrations in Shanghai, China, during the 6-year period were collected. We applied the overdispersed generalized additive model and the distributed lag model to explore the short-term cumulative effects of environmental factors on AD. Results: AD symptoms were aggravated by extreme low temperature (1st percentile, 0.5°C) (RR = 1.32, 95% CI: 1.16–1.51) and per 10 unit decrease of humidity (RR = 1.10, 95% CI: 1.12–2.47). The increased concentration of air pollutants except ozone (O 3 ) contributed to the increased risk of AD outpatients. A 10 μg/m 3 increase in sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ) and nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) were associated with 6.03% (95% CI: 2.29%, 9.91%), and 1.96% (95% CI: 0.46%, 3.48%) increase of AD outpatients. AD patients in the 8- to 17-year-old group were most susceptible to extreme low temperature, and patients in the 0- to 7-year-old group were most susceptible to air pollutants, including particulate matter (PM 10 ), SO 2 , and NO 2 . Men were more sensitive to the effects of extreme low temperature than women, while women were more vulnerable to air pollutants. The adverse effects of SO 2 and NO 2 on AD can be enhanced significantly by the warm season or other pollutants. Conclusion: Exposure to a lower temperature, lower humidity, and higher levels of air pollutants is significantly associated with increased risks of AD incidence. These impacts were more pronounced in children less than 7 years old, women, and warm seasons.

Abstract:Background The prevalence of atopic dermatitis (AD) dramatically increased over these years and environmental factors were considered as potential contributors towards these trends. Objective This study aimed to explore several major environmental exposures, including air pollution, temperature and relative humidity, in order to identify potential modifiable risk factors and their interactive effects on AD. Methods We applied a bivariate response surface model and stratification model based on time-series Poisson generalized additive models to examine the interactive effects of air pollution and meteorological factors on AD. Results A total of 64 987 outpatient visits for AD were recorded from 1 January 2013 to 31 December 2017. Interactive effects were found between air pollutants and meteorological factors. Enhanced positive associations between pollutants and outpatient visits for AD were found at the highest quartile temperature level. A 10 mu g/m(3) increase in PM2.5, PM10, NO2 and SO2 were associated with 0.42% (95% CI: 0.16-0.67%), 0.34% (95% CI: 0.15-0.54%), 1.11% (95% CI: 0.38-1.84%) and 1.06% (0.21-1.93%) increase in outpatient visits for AD at the highest quartile temperature level. Conclusion That effects of air pollutants on AD can be modified by meteorological factors, with enhanced effects on hot days.

Abstract:Limited evidence was available on ambient air pollution and pediatric atopic dermatitis (AD). The study aimed to evaluate the associations between short-term exposure to air pollutants and outpatient visits for pediatric AD. From 2016-2018, we collected data on six criteria air pollutants (PM2.5, PM10, NO2, SO2, CO and O-3) and daily outpatient visits for pediatric AD in 66 hospitals, covering all districts in Shanghai, China. The over-dispersed Poisson generalized additive model (GAM) was applied to fit the associations of criteria air pollutants with hospital visits. Two-pollutant models were fitted and stratified analyses by sex, age and season were conducted. We identified 477,833 outpatient visits for pediatric AD. Each interquartile range (IQR) increase in PM2.5 (IQR: 30.9 mu g/m(3)), PM10 (8.9 mu g/m3), NO2 (25.5 mu g/m(3)), SO2 (5.8 mu g/m3) and CO (0.283 mg/m(3)) on the concurrent day was significantly associated with increments of 2.08 % (95 % CI: 0.53 %, 3.65 %), 2.53 % (95 % CI: 0.87 %, 4.22 %), 8.14 % (95 % CI: 6.24 %, 10.08 %), 5.67 % (95 % CI: 3.58 %, 7.80 %), and 2.27 % (95 % CI: 0.70 %, 3.87 %) in pediatric AD outpatient visits, respectively. The effects of NO2 remained robust after adjustment for other air pollutants. The exposure-response curves for PM2.5 and PM10 were steeper for moderate-lower concentrations, with a flatten curves at high concentration; nearly linear relationships were found for NO2. Higher associations of NO2 exposure on AD were detected in children under 6 years old (p=0.01); and we observed larger effect of air pollutants in cool seasons (p<0.001 forPM(2.5), PM10, NO2 and CO; p=0.043 for SO2). This study indicated that short-term exposure to air pollution could increase risk of outpatient visits for pediatric AD.

Abstract:Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease affecting approximately 20% of children globally. While studies have been conducted elsewhere, air pollution and weather variability is not well studied in the tropics. This time-series study examines the association between air pollution and meteorological factors with the incidence of outpatient visits for AD obtained from the National Skin Centre (NSC) in Singapore. The total number of 1,440,844 consultation visits from the NSC from 2009 to 2019 was analysed. Using the distributed lag non-linear model and assuming a negative binomial distribution, the short-term temporal association between outpatient visits for AD and air quality and meteorological variability on a weekly time-scale were examined, while adjusting for long-term trends, seasonality and autocorrelation. The analysis was also stratified by gender and age to assess potential effect modification. The risk of AD consultation visits was 14% lower (RR 10th percentile : 0.86, 95% CI 0.78–0.96) at the 10th percentile (11.9 μg/m 3 ) of PM 2.5 and 10% higher (RR 90th percentile : 1.10, 95% CI 1.01–1.19) at the 90th percentile (24.4 μg/m 3 ) compared to the median value (16.1 μg/m 3 ). Similar results were observed for PM 10 with lower risk at the 10th percentile and higher risk at the 90th percentile (RR 10th percentile : 0.86, 95% CI 0.78–0.95, RR 90th percentile : 1.10, 95% CI 1.01–1.19). For rainfall for values above the median, the risk of consultation visits was higher up to 7.4 mm in the PM 2.5 model (RR 74th percentile : 1.07, 95% CI 1.00–1.14) and up to 9 mm in the PM 10 model (RR 80th percentile : 1.12, 95% CI 1.00–1.25). This study found a close association between outpatient visits for AD with ambient particulate matter concentrations and rainfall. Seasonal variations in particulate matter and rainfall may be used to alert healthcare providers on the anticipated rise in AD cases and to time preventive measures to reduce the associated health burden.

Abstract:Objective To investigate the association between air pollution and the daily number of outpatient visits for dermatitis in Beijing city, and to evaluate the sensitivity to air pollution in populations of different gender and age. Methods Time-series data on daily outpatient visits for dermatitis between April 2012 and April 2014 were collected from Air Force General Hospital of PLA. The daily average concentrations of sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide(NO2), and particulate matters(PM2.5, PM10)were obtained from Beijing Municipal Environmental Monitoring Center, and routine meteorological data (including daily mean temperature, relative humidity and wind speed)were collected from the China Meteorological Data Sharing Service System. A generalized additive model was used to analyze the association between daily average concentrations of air pollutants and the number of daily outpatient visits for dermatitis. Results In single-pollutant models, an increase of 10 μg/m3 in daily concentrations of PM2.5, PM10, SO2, and NO2 was associated with the number of outpatient visits for dermatitis with the relative risk being 1.003 1 (95% CI, 1.001 6 - 1.004 5), 1.0025 (95% CI, 1.001 4 - 1.003 7), 1.0057 (95% CI, 1.001 5 - 1.009 9)and 1.009 7 (95% CI, 1.005 6 - 1.013 8)respectively. Similarly, multipollutant models showed that air pollutant concentrations were significantly associated with the daily number of outpatient visits for dermatitis. Distributed lag models showed that the effects of PM2.5, PM10 and NO2 on daily outpatient visits for dermatitis were mainly observed on the day of exposure, while the effect of SO2 increased along with the increment of lag days. Stratification analysis showed that people aged less than 60 years and females were relatively more sensitive to particulate matters (PM2.5, PM10), while NO2 affected all groups of people at the same degree, and SO2 mainly affected people aged 35 - 60 years. Conclusion Air pollutants PM2.5, PM10, SO2 and NO2 may all increase the risk of dermatitis in Beijing area.

Abstract:Background The short-term effect of ambient air pollution on atopic dermatitis (AD), along with its effect modifiers, has not been fully addressed. Objectives To examine the short-term associations between air pollution and AD, and to identify effect modifications by age and season. Methods We used the generalized additive model to evaluate the short-term effect of ambient air pollution on daily hospital visits for AD, adjusting for potential confounders. Subgroup analyses were performed to identify potential effect modifications by season and age (< 18 years and >= 18 years). Results A total of 29 972 hospital visits for AD were recorded in Guangzhou, China, from 19 January 2013 to 31 December 2017. Among them, 72.8% were visits by children and 51.4% occurred in the cool season. Acute and delayed effects on AD hospital visits were significant for all air pollutants. Stronger effects were seen in the cool season (approximately 1.7-3.0 times higher than effects in the warm season). Stronger effects were also observed in children (approximately 1.3-1.8 times higher than effects in adults). Sensitivity analyses indicated the results were robust. Conclusions Air pollution might be an important trigger for AD in subtropical Guangzhou, China. Children are more vulnerable than adults, and the effects are stronger in the cool season.

Abstract:Background The prevalence of atopic dermatitis (AD) in children has increased substantially in China over past decades. The ongoing rise in the prevalence stresses the important role of the environmental factors in the pathogenesis of AD. However, studies evaluating the effects of air pollution on AD in children are scarce. Objective To quantitatively assess the association between air pollution and outpatient visits for AD in children. Methods In this time-series study, we collected 214,747 children of AD from January 1, 2015 to December 31, 2019 through the electronic data base in the Children's Hospital of Chongqing Medical University. The number of daily visits was treated as the dependent variable, and generalized additive models with a Poisson like distribution were constructed, controlling for relevant potential confounders and performing subgroup analyses. Results Each 10 μg/m 3 increase in PM 2.5 , PM 10 , SO 2 , NO 2 and each 1 mg/m 3 increase in CO concentrations was significantly associated with a 0.7% (95% CI: 0.2, 1.3%), 0.9% (95% CI: 0.5, 1.4%), 11% (95% CI: 7.5, 14.7%), 5.5% (95% CI: 4.3, 6.7%) and 10.1% (95% CI: 2.7, 18.2%) increase of AD outpatient visits on the current day, respectively. The lag effect was found in SO 2 , PM 10 , and NO 2. The effects were stronger in cool season and age 0–3 group. Conclusions Our study suggests that short-term exposure to ambient air pollution contributes to more childhood AD outpatient visits in Chongqing, China.

Abstract:Nucleotide sequence comparisons were used to investigate the evolution of P transposable elements and the possibility that horizontal transfer has played a role in their occurrence in natural populations of Drosophila and other Diptera. The phylogeny of P elements was examined using published sequences from eight dipteran taxa and a new, partial sequence from Scaptomyza elmoi. The results from a number of different analyses are highly consistent and reveal a P-element phylogeny that contradicts the phylogeny of the species. At least three instances of horizontal transfer are necessary to explain this incongruence, but other explanations cannot be ruled out at this time.

Abstract:Background/Aims: Weather and air pollution are associated with the exacerbation of respiratory diseases. We investigated patterns of medical care use according to meteorological factors and air pollution in patients with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).Methods: We analyzed the medical care utilization patterns of patients with asthma or COPD registered in the Korea Health Insurance Review and Assessment database for the period 2007 to 2013. The patterns were divided into hospitalization and emergency department (ED) use.Results: The medical care use of patients with asthma or COPD increased when the mean temperature and relative humidity were lower, and the temperature difference and atmospheric pressure were greater. Medical care use increased with the concentrations of particulate matter and ozone. Among age groups, sensitivity to pollutants was greatest in patients aged ≥ 65 years. The effect of being elderly was greater for asthma than for COPD, with a higher hospitalization rate. ED utilization affected by environmental factors was significantly greater for females and hospitalization was significantly more common for males.Conclusions: Meteorological factors and air pollutants were shown to contribute to increased medical care utilization by patients with asthma and COPD, particularly elderly patients. The overall effect was greater for COPD, but the effect in elderly patients was greater for asthma. In addition, the patterns of change in medical care use due to environmental factors differed according to sex.

Abstract:Atopic dermatitis (AD) has increased in prevalence to become the most common inflammatory skin condition globally, and geographic variation and migration studies suggest an important role for environmental triggers. Air pollution, especially due to industrialization and wildfires, may contribute to the development and exacerbation of AD. We provide a comprehensive, multidisciplinary review of existing molecular and epidemiologic studies on the associations of air pollutants and AD symptoms, prevalence, incidence, severity, and clinic visits. Cell and animal studies demonstrated that air pollutants contribute to AD symptoms and disease by activating the aryl hydrocarbon receptor pathway, promoting oxidative stress, initiating a proinflammatory response, and disrupting the skin barrier function. Epidemiologic studies overall report that air pollution is associated with AD among both children and adults, though the results are not consistent among cross-sectional studies. Studies on healthcare use for AD found positive correlations between medical visits for AD and air pollutants. As the air quality worsens in many areas globally, it is important to recognize how this can increase the risk for AD, to be aware of the increased demand for AD-related medical care, and to understand how to counsel patients regarding their skin health. Further research is needed to develop treatments that prevent or mitigate air pollution-related AD symptoms.

Abstract:Background: Eczema and dermatitis are a group of common skin conditionswithmultiple risk factors. Evidence of the effects of air pollutants on eczema and dermatitis remains limited. This study aimed to investigate the effects of short-term exposure to air pollution on eczema and dermatitis in Beijing. Methods: A time-stratified case-crossover design was used to assess the associations between short-term changes in air pollution and the hospital outpatient visits for eczema and dermatitis in Beijing. Results: A total of 157 595 outpatient visits for eczema and dermatitis were recorded from April 1, 2012 to April 30, 2014. All pollutants showed significant positive associations with the number of outpatient visits for eczema and dermatitis on lag 0 (the current day). Per IQR increase in PM2.5, PM10, NO2 and SO2 was associated with 3.81% (95% CI: 2.92-4.7%), 3.18% (95% CI: 2.39-3.97%), 5.43% (95% CI: 4.43-6.43%) and 5.57% (95% CI: 4.55-6.58%) increases in outpatient visits for eczema and dermatitis on lag 0. Associations of air pollutants with eczema and dermatitis outpatient visits varied with the seasons and were stronger among older people and females. Also, an association of consecutive days' high concentration pollution with increased outpatient visits was observed. Conclusions: Exposure to air pollution increases the exacerbation of eczema and dermatitis and stronger positive associations between air pollutants and outpatient visits for eczema and dermatitis were found among the aged, females and when high concentration air pollution occurs continuously.

Abstract:Introduction Atopic dermatitis (AD, also known as atopic eczema) is driven by a complex relationship between genetic predisposition and environmental exposures. Although few studies have proposed that ambient temperature variability is one of the main markers, seldom studies investigated the relationship between ambient temperature and the prevalence of AD for children, especially considering the modification effects of particulate matters. Methods We applied a distributed lag non-linear model (DLNM) combined with non-linear interaction terms to assess not only the effects of ambient temperature, but also the modifying effects of particulate matters with an aerodynamic diameter of 2.5μm (PM2.5) or less on the association between mean temperature and outpatient visits for children with AD during 2012 and 2014 in Beijing, China. We calculated hot effects (1 ℃ above the threshold), given that PM2.5 equaled 0μg/m3, the 25th, 50th and 75th percentile of PM2.5, respectively. Results The associations between temperature and outpatient visits for children with AD were non-linear. Only high temperatures increased the risk of daily outpatient visits for children with AD, with a threshold approximately 21.3℃. The cumulative relative hot effect was 1.051(95% confidence interval (CI):1.023, 1.079). Statistically significant interaction effects were found between PM2.5 and high temperatures on outpatient visits for children with AD. On highly polluted days (given that PM2.5 equaled 75th percentile of PM2.5), the cumulative relative risk of high temperature over lags of 0-20 days was 1.35(95%CI: 1.14, 1.61). Conclusion High temperatures are significantly associated with outpatient visits for children with AD. Enhanced adverse high temperatures effects were found at higher levels of PM2.5, which implies that it may be important to evaluate synergistic effects and not only pure temperature or air pollution effects.
Estimation of Attributable Risk and Direct Medical and Non-Medical Costs of Major Mental Disorders Associated With Air Pollution Exposures Among Children and Adolescents in the Republic of Korea, 2011-2019

Abstract:Background: Recent studies have reported the burden of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder [ADHD], autism spectrum disorder [ASD], and depressive disorder. Also, there is mounting evidence on the effects of environmental factors, such as ambient air pollution, on these disorders among children and adolescents. However, few studies have evaluated the burden of mental disorders attributable to air pollution exposure in children and adolescents. Methods: We estimated the risk ratios of major mental disorders (ADHD, ASD, and depressive disorder) associated with air pollutants among children and adolescents using time-series data (2011-2019) obtained from a nationwide air pollution monitoring network and healthcare utilization claims data in the Republic of Korea. Based on the estimated risk ratios, we determined the population attributable fraction (PAF) and calculated the medical costs of major mental disorders attributable to air pollution. Results: A total of 33,598 patients were diagnosed with major mental disorders during 9 years. The PAFs for all the major mental disorders were estimated at 6.9% (particulate matter < 10 μm [PM10]), 3.7% (PM2.5), and 2.2% (sulfur dioxide [SO2]). The PAF of PM10 was highest for depressive disorder (9.2%), followed by ASD (8.4%) and ADHD (5.2%). The direct medical costs of all major mental disorders attributable to PM10 and SO2 decreased during the study period. Conclusion: This study assessed the burden of major mental disorders attributable to air pollution exposure in children and adolescents. We found that PM10, PM2.5, and SO2 attributed 7%, 4%, and 2% respectively, to the risk of major mental disorders among children and adolescents.
Auditory evoked potentials recorded directly from the human VIIIth nerve and brain stem: origins of their fast and slow components.

Abstract:Brain stem auditory evoked potentials in humans are composed of fast pseudorhythmic positive waves and slow positive and negative waves. The sources of these components have been identified on the basis of the observation of amplitude increase in depth records during surgery and by tracing these potentials from their intracranial maximum to the scalp by using movable electrodes within the IVth, IIIrd and lateral ventricles. The first wave I represents postsynaptic activities of the first auditory neurones; axonal volleys travelling along the auditory nerve do not contribute to this wave, which is obviously discrepant with the currently accepted view. Waves II and III are primarily generated within the pons, with possible contributions from the auditory nerve. Waves IV and VI originate from the pons and the medial geniculate body respectively. Both slow positive and negative waves have their origin in the inferior colliculus (IC). The slow positive waves probably represent incoming axonal volley and the negative waves, the postsynaptic potentials in the IC.

Abstract:Skin diseases have become a global concern. This study aims to evaluate the associations between ambient air pollution and emergency room visits for skin diseases under the background of improving air quality in China. Based on 45,094 cases from a general hospital and fixed-site monitoring environmental data from 2014-2019 in Beijing, China, this study used generalized additive models with quasi-Poisson regression to estimate the exposure-health associations at lag 0-1 to lag 0-7. PM2.5 and NO2 exposure were associated with increased emergency room visits for total skin diseases (ICD10: L00-L99). Positive associations of PM2.5, PM10, O-3 and NO2 with dermatitis/eczema (ICD-10: L20-30), as well as SO2 and NO2 with urticaria (ICD-10: L50) visits were also found. For instance, a 10 mu g/m(3) increase in PM2.5 was associated with increases of 0.7% (95%CI: 0.2%, 1.2%) in total skin diseases visits at lag 0-5 and 1.1% (95%CI: 0.6%, 1.7%) in dermatitis/eczema visits at lag 0-1, respectively. For PM2.5, PM10 and CO, stronger annual associations were typically observed in the high-pollution (2014) and low-pollution (2018/2019) years. For instance, a 10 mu g/m(3) increase in PM2.5 at lag 0-5 was associated with increases of 1.8% (95%CI: 1.0%, 2.6%) and 2.3% (95%CI: 0.4%, 4.3%) in total skin disease visits in 2014 and 2018, respectively. Our study emphasizes the necessity of controlling the potential health hazard of air pollutants on skin, although significant achievements in air quality control have been made in China.
A Time-Series Study of the Effect of Air Pollution on Outpatient Visits for Acne Vulgaris in Beijing.

Abstract:Background/Aims: There is increasing evidence that exposure to air pollutants, including particulate matter (PM2.5, PM10), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and sulfur dioxide (SO2), might aggravate preexisting skin diseases such as eczema and urticaria. Here we investigated if a possible link exists between air pollution and acne vulgaris. We assessed the association between ambient air pollutant concentrations and the number of visits of patients for acne vulgaris to a dermatological outpatient clinic in Beijing, China, from April 1, 2012 to April 30, 2014. Methods: In this time period, 59,325 outpatient visits were recorded because of acne vulgaris. Daily air pollution parameters for PM10, PM2.5, SO2, and NO2 were obtained from the Beijing Municipal Environmental Monitoring Center. Results: Increased concentrations of ambient PM2.5, PM10, and NO2 were significantly associated with increased numbers of outpatient visits for acne vulgaris over the 2 years. These effects could be observed for NO2 in a single-pollutant model and for PM2.5, PM10, and NO2 in 2-pollutant models, which are closer to real-life exposure. Of note, these effects were specific because they were not observed for increased SO2 concentrations, which even showed negative correlations in all test models. Conclusion: This study provides indirect evidence for a link between acne vulgaris and air pollution.

Abstract:Environmental factors may play roles in the development of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and some studies have shown that air pollution was associated with the development of autoimmune disease. This study was designed to investigate the effect of air pollutants on the development of adult RA. A nested case-control cohort study was performed using the National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort during 2002–2014 in Korea. Air pollution data were collected from the National Ambient Air Monitoring System (NAMIS), and exposure levels were extrapolated using geographic information systems. The group with RA (n = 444) was compared with a propensity score-matched control group (n = 1776), and one-year average concentrations of air pollution were predicted at each patient’s residence. The adjusted binary logistic regression analysis showed a positive association between O3 exposure and the incidence risk of RA for the third (odds ratios (OR) = 1.45, 95% confidence intervals (CI): 1.08–1.96) and fourth (OR = 1.35, 95% CI: 1.00–1.83) quartiles in adults over 20 years of age. The third quartile CO exposure was also associated with an increased risk of RA (OR = 1.57, 95% CI: 1.16–2.12). The results of this nationwide population-based study showed that a one-year exposure to CO and O3 in adults was associated with an increased risk of RA.

Abstract:Allergic conjunctivitis is a common problem that significantly impairs patients' quality of life. Whether air pollution serves as a risk factor for the development of allergic conjunctivitis remains elusive. In this paper, we assess the relationship between air pollutants and weather conditions with outpatient visits for allergic conjunctivitis. By using a time-series analysis based on the largest dataset ever assembled to date, we found that the number of outpatient visits for allergic conjunctivitis was significantly correlated with the levels of NO2, O3, and temperature, while its association with humidity was statistically marginal. No associations between PM10, PM2.5, SO2, or wind velocity and outpatient visits were seen. Subgroup analyses showed that sex seemed to modify the effects of humidity on outpatient visits for allergic conjunctivitis, but not for NO2, O3, or temperature. People younger than 40 were found to be susceptible to changes of all four parameters, while those older than 40 were only consistently affected by NO2 levels. Our findings revealed that higher levels of ambient NO2, O3, and temperature increase the chances of outpatient visits for allergic conjunctivitis. Ambient air pollution and weather changes may contribute to the worsening of allergic conjunctivitis.

Abstract:Air pollution is associated with multiple health problems worldwide, contributing to increased morbidity and mortality. Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common allergic disease, and increasing evidence has revealed a role of air pollution in the development of atopic dermatitis. Air pollutants are derived from several sources, including harmful gases such as nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ), sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ), and carbon monoxide (CO), as well as particulate matter (PM) of various sizes, and bioaerosols. Possible mechanisms linking air pollution to atopic dermatitis include damage to the skin barrier through oxidative stress, increased water loss, physicochemical injury, and an effect on skin microflora. Furthermore, oxidative stress triggers immune dysregulation, leading to enhanced sensitization to allergens. There have been multiple studies focusing on the association between various types of air pollutants and atopic dermatitis. Since there are many confounders in the current research, such as climate, synergistic effects of mixed pollutants, and diversity of study population, it is not surprising that inconsistencies exist between different studies regarding AD and air pollution. Still, it is generally accepted that air pollution is a risk factor for AD. Future studies should focus on how air pollution leads to AD as well as effective intervention measures.

Abstract:Background/aim This study provides further evidence that short-term changes in air pollution increase the exacerbation of eczema and the effect of NO2 may be more robust than other pollutants. Methods We used a time-stratified case-crossover design. Daily diagnosed visits were collected from Air Force General Hospital from April 2012 through April 2014. Daily air pollution including concentrations of fine particulates (PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2) and daily meteorological data were also obtained. By using conditional logistic regression models, we estimated odds ratios (OR) and their corresponding 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) for eczema visits associated with per interquartile-range (IQR) increase in each pollutant, adjusting for daily ambient temperature and relative humidity. Results PM2.5, NO2 and SO2 were found to be significantly associated with increased outpatient visits for eczema. The ORs were 1.03 (95% CI: 1.02 to 1.04) and 1.03 (95% CI: 1.02 to 1.05) for an IQR increase in PM2.5 for lags 2 and 7 days and this association persisted in 2-pollutants and 3-pollutants models. The ORs were 1.01 (95% CI: 1.00 to 1.02), 1.03 (95% CI: 1.02 to 1.04), 1.01 (95% CI: 1.00 to 1.02) and 1.01 (95% CI: 1.00 to 1.03) for an IOR increase in NO2 for the current day and for lags 2, 5 and 7 days and this association persisted in 3-pollutants models. The ORs for an IQR increase in SO2 for the current day and for lags 5 and 7 days were 1.03 (95% CI: 1.01 to 1.04), 1.01 (95% CI: 1.00 to 1.03) and 1.02 (95% CI: 1.01 to 1.04), but only association for lags 5 day was significant in 3-pollutants models. Conclusion Eczema is a common chronic inflammatory skin disease that place a large burden. An association between air pollution and skin problems has been suggested. However, epidemiological researches on the effects of air pollutants on ezema are still limited. We aim to evaluate the associations between short-term changes in air pollution and the outpatient visits for eczema in Beijing.
