Abstract:Small changes in soil organic carbon (SOC) may have great influences on the climate-carbon cycling feedback. However, there are large uncertainties in predicting the dynamics of SOC in soil profile at the global scale, especially the role of soil microbial biomass in regulating the vertical distribution of SOC. Here, we developed a global database of soil microbial biomass carbon (SMBC), soil microbial quotient (SMQ, the ratio of SMBC to SOC), and SOC from 312 soil profiles, as well as climate, ecosystem type, and edaphic factors associated with these soil profiles. We assessed the global pattern of vertical distributions of SMBC and SMQ and the contributions of climate, ecosystem type, and edaphic factors to their vertical patterns. Our results showed that SMBC and SMQ decreased exponentially with depth, especially in the top 0-40 cm soil. SOC also decreased exponentially with depth but in different magnitudes compared to SMBC and SMQ. Edaphic factors (e.g., soil clay content and C/N ratio) were the most important controls for the vertical distributions of SMBC and SMQ, probably by mediating the preservation of substrates and nutrient supply for microbial growth in soils. Mean annual temperature and ecosystem types (i.e. forests, grasslands, and croplands) exerted weak influences on SMBC and SMQ. Overall, our data synthesis provides quantitative information of how SMBC, SMQ, and SOC changed along soil profiles globally and identifies important factors that influence their vertical distributions. The findings can help improve the prediction of C cycling in the terrestrial ecosystem by integrating the contributions of soil microbial roles in Earth system carbon models.
Divergent vertical distributions of microbial biomass with soil depth among groups and land uses

Abstract:Soil microbial biomass is key to improving the prediction of soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics by modeling. However, the driving mechanism of microbial biomass of different groups with soil depth is poorly understood across sites. Here, we compiled the biomass of different microbial groups (i.e., fungi, bacteria, gram-positive bacteria G+, and gram-negative bacteria G-) from the surface to a soil depth of 1 m from 71 soil profiles across three continents. We found that the biomass of microbial groups all decreased with soil depth but at different magnitudes, while the relative abundance of microbial groups, except G-, was relatively stable along soil profiles. Soil fungal biomass had a shallower vertical distribution than bacteria, especially G+, with 89% fungi and 76% G+ in the top 10 cm soils. In addition, a greater proportion of microbial biomass (71-89%) compared to SOC (64%) was in the top 10 cm soils, suggesting that microbes and SOC exhibited different vertical distributions. The vertical distributions of microbial biomass of different groups were significantly correlated with SOC and clay content but not with climate, and these distributions were different among land uses, highlighting the great influences of edaphic factors on vertical distributions of microbial biomass. The relationship between microbial biomass and soil depth provides a feasible way to estimate microbial biomass at different soil depths, which can serve as a benchmark to improve the prediction of SOC dynamics of entire soil profile at large scales.

Abstract:Microorganisms exist throughout the soil profile and those microorganisms living in deeper soil horizons likely play key roles in regulating biogeochemical processes. However, the vertical differentiations of microbes along soil depth and their global biogeographical patterns remain poorly understood. Herein, we conducted a global meta-analysis to clarify the vertical changes of microbial biomass, diversity, and microbial relative abundance across the soil profiles. Data was collected from 43 peer-reviewed articles of 110 soil profiles (467 observations in total) from around the world. We found soil microbial biomass and bacterial diversity decreased with depth in soils. Among examined edaphic factors, the depth variation in soil pH exhibited significant negative associations with the depth change in microbial biomass and bacterial Shannon index, while soil total organic carbon (TOC) and total nitrogen (TN) exhibited significant positive associations. For the major bacteria phyla, the relative abundances of Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes decreased with soil depth, while Chloroflexi, Gemmatimonadetes, and Nitrospirae increased. We found both parallels and differences in the biogeographical patterns of microbial attribute of topsoil vs. subsoil. Microbial biomass was significantly controlled by the soil nutrient concentrations in both topsoil and subsoil compared with climatic factors, while bacterial Shannon index was significantly controlled by the edaphic factors and across latitudes or climatic factors. Moreover, mean annual precipitation can also be used as a predictor of microbial biomass in subsoil which is different from topsoil. Collectively, our results provide a novel integrative view of how microbial biomass and bacterial community response to soil depth change and clarify the controlling factors of the global distribution patterns of microbial biomass and diversity, which are critical to enhance ecosystem simulation models and for formulating sustainable ecosystem management and conservation policies.

Soil microbial dark matter explored from genome-resolved metagenomics

Abstract:Abstract Soil contains a vast number of unidentified microbes, known as soil microbial dark matter. This is an important source of microbial biodiversity and genetic resources1,2, but has yet to be fully explored. In this study, we conducted the first large-scale excavation of soil microbial dark matter by reconstructing 40,039 metagenome-assembled genome bins (the SMAG catalog) from 2,990 soil metagenomes. We identified 16,530 of 21,077 species-level genome bins (SGBs) as unknown SGBs (uSGBs), which greatly expand archaeal and bacterial diversity across the tree of life. The uSGBs identified substantially increased the functional landscape and intra-species genome diversity of the soil microbiome, and provided large proportions of the 43,169 biosynthetic gene clusters and 8,544 CRISPR-Cas genes mined from the SMAG catalog. This suggests their potential for genetic resource exploitation. In addition, we determined that uSGBs contributed 84.6% of novel viral-host associations identified from the SMAG catalog. Our results demonstrate the richness of microbial dark matter in soil and highlight its potential in inspiring new avenues of research in the field of soil microbiology. We believe that the SMAG catalog will be of great value and interest to the broad readership, and will serve as a valuable genomic database to drive significant advances in understanding soil microbial biodiversity and exploiting novel genetic resources.

Abstract:Soil organic carbon (SOC) is a key factor in soil fertility and structure and plays an important role in the global carbon cycle. However, SOC causes a large uncertainty in Earth System Models for predicting future climate change. The GlobalSoilMap (GSM) project aims to provide global digital soil maps of primary functional soil properties at six standard depth intervals (0-5, 5-15, 15-30, 30-60, 60-100, and 100-200 cm) with a grid resolution of 90 × 90 m. Currently, few SOC national products that meet the GSM specifications are available. This study describes the three-dimensional spatial modeling of SOC maps according to GSM specifications. We used 5982 soil profiles collected during the Second National Soil Survey of China, along with 16 environmental covariates related to soil formation. The results were obtained by parallel computing over tiles of 100 × 100 km, and the predictions for the tiles were subsequently merged into a single SOC map for the whole of China per standard GSM depth interval. For each standard GSM depth interval, SOC contents and their uncertainties were predicted and mapped at a spatial resolution of approximately 90 m using bootstrapping. Southwestern and northeastern China had higher SOC contents than the rest of China did, whereas northwestern China had a lower SOC content. The range of the coefficient of determination for the six depth intervals ranged from 0.35 to 0.02, and the mean SOC content was 17.86-8.67 g kg-1. Both these values decreased strongly with increasing soil depth. Cropland SOC content was lower than that of forest and grassland. The results of variable importance show that SoilGrids data were the best predictors for defining the soil-landscape relationship during regression modeling for SOC. These SOC maps can provide a data source for environmental modeling, a benchmark against which to evaluate and monitor SOC dynamics, and a guide for the design of future soil surveys.

Abstract:Soil Microbial biomass is soil organic matter's living mass. Half of the microbial biomass is in the uppermost (15 cm) soil, which stores <4% organic matter, plays a major role in breakdown and soil carbon pool building. Estimating soil microbial biomass carbon (MBC) stocks and their relationship with climatic, environmental, and soil biochemical variables can help with soil management, climate change adaptation, and mitigation. We studied MBC storage pattern and effect of environmental variables on it and SOC stock of diverse forest ecosystems worldwide. We analyzed all publications published between 1989 and 2022 on MBC, SOC stocks, and factors that affected microbial biomass cum microorganisms in diverse forest environments. Soil MBC ranged from 55 mg kg-1C (broadleaf forest) to 2214.4 mg kg −1 C (Montane mixed forest) while the SOC stock ranged between 800 mg kg −1 C (Boreal forest) to 350,800 mg kg −1 C (Mixed natural forest). MBC stock varied widely throughout forest environments. The mean value was found highest in subtropical humid forest (1001.64 ± 106.56 mg kg−1C) followed by mixed forest (853.78 ± 111.24 mg kg−1C), subtropical montane forest (808.58 ± 105.63 mg kg−1C), secondary mixed forest (731.20 ± 87.54 mg kg−1C), and Pine based forest (689.5 ± 338.5 mg kg−1 C). MBC showed increasing trend with mean annual temperature, and declining patterns with mean annual rainfall and soil depths. MBC correlated positively with SOC stock and soil basal respiration (SBR). Seasonal changes affect soil MBC and SOC storage. Temperature, moisture, vegetation quality, seasonal influences, availability of high SOM, higher decomposition rates, and enhanced nutrient depositions burn up biological N-mineralization and N-immobilization mechanisms in forest soil. In our investigation, these factors boosted MBC and SOC stocks. Microbial and SOC pools promote carbon management and soil quality or fertility. Our research may give a baseline for MBC estimations across diverse forest habitats and its influencing elements, which is crucial for India's future microbiological investigations.

Abstract:Soil microbes play key roles in driving and regulating nutrient cycling in terrestrial ecosystems. However, a lack of global-scale information regarding the distribution of soil microbial biomass carbon (SMB C), nitrogen (SMB N), and phosphorus (SMB P) in terrestrial ecosystems has limited our ability to incorporate the broad-scale soil microbial nutritional properties and the associated processes into biogeochemical models. Here, we synthesized a global dataset including 3801 observations for SMB C, 3154 observations of SMB N, and 2429 observations of SMB P in the top 0-30 cm soil depth. Based on this comprehensive global dataset, we generated quantitative and spatially explicit maps of SMB C, N, and P across terrestrial ecosystems using a random forest approach. We also quantified the relative importance of multiple environmental variables in predicting the spatial variation of SMB C, N, and P concentrations and then made further predictions at a global scale. Soil organic carbon (SOC) was the most important factor in predicting SMB C, N, and P at a global scale. At the global scale, the storage of SMB C, N, and P were estimated to be 23.13 Pg C, 3.93 Pg N and 2.16 Pg P in the top 0-30 cm soil surface, respectively. Our global maps of SMB C, N, and P presented here can be used to constraint Earth system models, and provide the first step forward to predict the roles of soil microbial nutrients in terrestrial nutrient cycling.
Storage, patterns and environmental controls of soil organic carbon in China

Abstract:Based on the data from China’s second national soil survey and field observations in northwest China, we estimated soil organic carbon (SOC) storage in China and investigated its spatial and vertical distribution. China’s SOC storage in a depth of 1 meter was estimated as 69.1 Pg (10 15 g), with an average density of 7.8 kg m −2 . About 48% of the storage was concentrated in the top 30 cm. The SOC density decreased from the southeast to the northwest, and increased from arid to semi-humid zone in northern China and from tropical to cold-temperate zone in the eastern part of the country. The vertical distribution of SOC differed in various climatic zones and biomes; SOC distributed deeper in arid climate and water-limited biomes than in humid climate. An analysis of general linear model suggested that climate, vegetation, and soil texture significantly influenced spatial pattern of SOC, explaining 78.2% of the total variance, and that climate and vegetation interpreted 78.9% of the total variance in the vertical SOC distribution.

Abstract:First‐order organic matter decomposition models are used within most Earth System Models (ESMs) to project future global carbon cycling; these models have been criticized for not accurately representing mechanisms of soil organic carbon (SOC) stabilization and SOC response to climate change. New soil biogeochemical models have been developed, but their evaluation is limited to observations from laboratory incubations or few field experiments. Given the global scope of ESMs, a comprehensive evaluation of such models is essential using in situ observations of a wide range of SOC stocks over large spatial‐scales before their introduction to ESMs. In this study, we collected a set of in situ observations of SOC, litterfall and soil properties from 206 sites covering different forest and soil types in Europe and China. These data were used to calibrate the model MIMICS (The MIcrobial‐MIneral Carbon Stabilization model), which we compared to the widely used first‐order model CENTURY. We show that, compared to CENTURY, MIMICS more accurately estimates forest SOC concentrations and the sensitivities of SOC to variation in soil temperature, clay content and litter input. The ratios of microbial biomass to total SOC predicted by MIMICS agree well with independent observations from globally‐distributed forest sites. By testing different hypotheses regarding (by using alternative process representations) of the physicochemical constraints on SOC deprotection and microbial turnover in MIMICS, the errors of simulated SOC concentrations across sites were further decreased. We show that MIMICS can resolve the dominant mechanisms of SOC decomposition and stabilization and that it can be a reliable tool for predictions of terrestrial SOC dynamics under future climate change. It also allows us to evaluate at large scale the rapidly evolving understanding of SOC formation and stabilization based on laboratory and limited filed observation.

Seasonal and Diurnal Variability in Airborne Mold from an Indoor Residential Environment in Northern New York

Abstract:Abstract It is well known that characterization of airborne bioaerosols in indoor environments is a challenge because of inherent irregularity in concentrations, which are influenced by many environmental factors. The primary aim of this study was to quantify the day-to-day variability of airborne fungal levels in a single residential environment over multiple seasons. Indoor air quality practitioners must recognize the inherent variability in airborne bio-aerosol measurements during data analysis of mold investigations. Changes in airborne fungi due to varying season and day is important to recognize when considering health impacts of these contaminants and when establishing effective controls. Using an Andersen N6 impactor, indoor and outdoor bioaerosol samples were collected on malt extract agar plates for 18 weekdays and 19 week-days in winter and summer, respectively. Interday and intraday variability for the bioaerosols were determined for each sampler. Average fungal concentrations were 26 times higher during the summer months. Day-to-day fungal samples showed a relatively high inconsistency suggesting airborne fungal levels are very episodic and are influenced by several environmental factors. Summer bio-aerosol variability ranged from 7 to 36% and winter variability from 24 to 212%; these should be incorporated into results of indoor mold investigations. The second objective was to observe the relationship between biological and nonbiological particulate matter (PM). No correlation was observed between biological and nonbiological PM. Six side-by-side particulate samplers collected coarse PM (PM10) and fine PM (PM2.5) levels in both seasons. PM2.5 particulate concentrations were found to be statistically higher during summer months. Interday variability observed during this study suggests that indoor air quality practitioners must adjust their exposure assessment strategies to reflect the temporal variability in bioaerosol concentrations.

Abstract:Accurate and high-resolution spatial soil information is crucial for efficient and sustainable land use, management, and conservation. Since the establishment of digital soil mapping (DSM) and the GlobalSoilMap working group, significant advances have been made in spatial soil information globally. However, accurately predicting soil variation over large and complex areas with limited samples remains a challenge, especially for China, which has diverse soil landscapes. To address this challenge, we utilized 11,209 representative multi-source legacy soil profiles (including the Second National Soil Survey of China, World Soil Information Service, First National Soil Survey of China, and regional databases) and high-resolution soil-forming environment characterization. Using advanced Quantile Regression Forest algorithms and a high-performance parallel computing strategy, we developed comprehensive maps of 23 soil physical, chemical and fertility properties at six standard depth layers from 0 to 2 meters in China with a 90 m spatial resolution (China dataset of soil properties for land surface modeling version 2, CSDLv2). Data-splitting and independent samples validation strategies were employed to evaluate the accuracy of the predicted maps quality. The results showed that the predicted maps were significantly more accurate and detailed compared to traditional soil type linkage methods (i.e., CSDLv1, the first version of the dataset), SoilGrids 2.0, and HWSD 2.0 products, effectively representing the spatial variation of soil properties across China. The prediction accuracy of most soil properties at the 0–5 cm depth interval ranged from good to moderate, with Model Efficiency Coefficients for most soil properties ranging from 0.75 to 0.32 during data-splitting validation and from 0.88 to 0.25 during independent sample validation. The wide range between the 5 % lower and 95 % upper prediction limits may indicate substantial room for improvement in current predictions. The relative importance of environmental covariates in predictions varied with soil properties and depth, indicating the complexity of interactions among multiple factors in the soil formation processes. As the soil profiles used in this study mainly originate from the Second National Soil Survey of China during 1970s and 1980s, they could provide new perspectives of soil changes together with existing maps based on 2010s soil profiles. The findings make important contributions to the GlobalSoilMap project and can also be used for regional Earth system modeling and land surface modeling to better represent the role of soil in hydrological and biogeochemical cycles in China. Global Depth Distribution of Soil Carbon Inputs Inferred from Belowground Net Primary Production and Root Biomass Profiles

Abstract:The depth distribution of carbon inputs to soil has been unquantified globally, hindering our understanding of belowground carbon dynamics. We synthesize global observational data to infer the allocation of carbon inputs to soil depths down to 2 m, and map depth-specific carbon inputs globally at 1 km resolution. Global average carbon input to the 0–20 cm soil layer is 1.1 Mg C ha yr, accounting for >50% of total soil carbon inputs. Across the globe, the depth distribution of carbon inputs shows large variability, and there are relatively more carbon inputs to deeper layers in hotter and drier regions. Edaphic, climatic and topographic properties (in the order of importance) explain >80% of such variability in soil depths; and the direction and magnitude of the influence of individual properties are soil depth- and biome-dependent. Our results provide global benchmarks for prediction of whole-soil carbon profiles across global biomes.

Abstract:Abstract. Soil organic carbon (SOC) is very important in the vulnerable ecological environment of the Third Pole; however, data regarding the spatial distribution of SOC are still scarce and uncertain. Based on multiple environmental variables and soil profile data from 458 pits (depth of 0–1 m) and 114 cores (depth of 0–3 m), this study uses a machine-learning approach to evaluate the SOC storage and spatial distribution at a depth interval of 0–3 m in the frozen ground area of the Third Pole region. Our results showed that SOC stocks (SOCSs) exhibited a decreasing spatial pattern from the southeast towards the northwest. The estimated SOC storage in the upper 3 m of the soil profile was 46.18 Pg for an area of 3.27×106 km2, which included 21.69 and 24.49 Pg for areas of permafrost and seasonally frozen ground, respectively. Our results provide information on the storage and patterns of SOCSs at a 1 km resolution for areas of frozen ground in the Third Pole region, thus providing a scientific basis for future studies pertaining to Earth system models. Abstract:The soil organic carbon stock (SOCS) is considered as one of the largest carbon reservoirs in terrestrial ecosystems, and small changes in soil can cause significant changes in atmospheric CO2 concentration. Understanding organic carbon accumulation in soils is crucial if China is to meet its dual carbon target. In this study, the soil organic carbon density (SOCD) in China was digitally mapped using an ensemble machine learning (ML) model. First, based on SOCD data obtained at depths of 0-20 cm from 4356 sampling points (15 environmental covariates), we compared the performance of four ML models, namely random forest (RF), extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), support vector machine (SVM), and artificial neural network (ANN) models, in terms of coefficient of determination (R2), mean absolute error (MAE), and root mean square error (RMSE) values. Then, we ensembled four models using Voting Regressor and the principle of stacking. The results showed that ensemble model (EM) accuracy was high (RMSE = 1.29, R2 = 0.85, MAE = 0.81), so that it could be a good choice for future research. Finally, the EM was used to predict the spatial distribution of SOCD in China, which ranged from 0.63 to 13.79 kg C/m2 (average = 4.09 (±1.90) kg C/m2). The SOC storage amount in surface soil (0-20 cm) was 39.40 Pg C. This study developed a novel, ensemble ML model for SOC prediction, and improved our understanding of the spatial distribution of SOC in China.

Abstract:Optimal methods for incorporating soil microbial mechanisms of carbon (C) cycling into Earth system models are still under debate. Specifically, whether soil microbial physiology parameters and residual materials are important to soil organic carbon content is still unclear. Here, we explored the effects of biotic and abiotic factors on soil organic C (SOC) content based on a survey of soils from 16 locations along a ~ 4000 km forest transect in eastern China, spanning a wide range of climate, soil conditions, and microbial communities. We found that SOC was highly correlated with soil microbial biomass C (MBC) and amino sugar concentration, an index of microbial necromass. Microbial carbon use efficiency (CUE) was significantly related to the variations in SOC along this national scale transect. Furthermore, the effect of climatic and edaphic factors on SOC was mainly via their regulation on microbial physiological properties (CUE and MBC). We also found that regression models on explanation of SOC variations with microbial physiological parameters and amino sugar performed better than the models without them. Our results provide the empirical linkages among climate, microbial characteristics and SOC content at large scale and confirm the necessity of incorporating microbial biomass and necromass pools in Earth system models under global change scenarios.

Abstract:Temperate forests are of pivotal importance in global carbon cycle, as they currently act as a carbon sink. Moreover, the continued expansion of the forest provides significant benefits in terms of mitigating climate change. Soil organic carbon (SOC) constitutes a vital component of the carbon inventory harbored within forest soils. Thus, understanding the dynamics and distribution of SOC in temperate forest soils can be essential to better predict the forest SOC inventories, and can help to provide theoretical basis for further studies in soil carbon management technologies. Spatial variability of SOC has been studied extensively, but the mechanism that regulates the vertical pattern of SOC is still not clear. In the present study, we hypothesized that the vertical pattern of SOC in temperate forest soils is dominated by the vertical transport of solute in soil, and a theoretical vertical scaling of SOC was proposed based on percolation theory. Theoretical range of SOC in the national forests in northeastern China and the United States were also predicted. The agreement between the observed SOC profiles and the theoretical scaling supported the hypothesis and suggested that percolation theory can be applied to depict the vertical distribution of SOC, while the application could be limited if vegetation cover and soil texture alter the dominant controlling factor of SOC distribution. The concordance between empirical data and the predicted range also showed significant potential of integrating percolation theory into comprehensive models for carbon stock estimation.

Abstract:Aims Owing to different soil environments and organic carbon sources, soil organic carbon (SOC) composition and preservation mechanisms may vary substantially in deep versus surface soils. This study examines vertical variation of various SOC components (including lignin phenols, cutin, suberin and microbial lipids) across the Chinese-Mongolian grasslands. Methods Lignin phenols and hydrolysable lipids were isolated by cupric oxide oxidation and alkaline hydrolysis, respectively. A comprehensive list of environmental variables was compiled to disentangle influencing factors for the variation of various components at four different depths. Results Lignin phenols, suberin and microbial lipids were most abundant in the surface soil (0–10 cm). Ratios of cutin to suberin and microbial lipids to lignin phenols (in the alpine grasslands) were higher in the bottom-most soil. Calcium (Ca) rather than iron (Fe) plays an important role in the preservation of cutin and microbial lipids in the bottom soil with a high Ca:Fe ratio and high pH. The incorporation efficiency of suberin was higher in deeper than surface soils and showed an increasing trend with depth in the alpine (but not temperate) grasslands. Conclusions Compared to surface soils, the incorporation of root-derived carbon into SOC is more efficient in deeper soils due to stronger mineral protection and weaker microbial decomposition. Root-derived carbon is more important for SOC accrual in the alpine than temperate grasslands, especially at depth. These findings reveal differential distribution patterns and preservation mechanisms for SOC components in the surface versus deep soils, providing new information to understand SOC stability at different depths.

Abstract:Accurate monitoring of soil organic carbon (SOC) is critical for sustainable management of soil for improving its quality, function, and carbon sequestration. As a nondestructive, efficient, and low-cost technique, mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopy has shown a great potential in rapid estimation of SOC, despite limited studies of the global scale. The objective of this work was to use a globally distributed topsoil MIR spectral library with 33,039 samples to predict SOC using different modeling methods. Effects of nine fractional-order derivatives (FODs) on the predicted accuracy of SOC were evaluated using four regression algorithms (i.e., ratio index-based linear regression, RI-LR; partial least squares regression, PLSR; Cubist; convolutional neural network, CNN). Square-root transformation to SOC data was performed to minimize the skewness and non-linearity. Results indicated FOD to capture the subtle spectral details related to SOC, leading to improved predictions that may not be possible by the raw absorbance and common integer-order derivatives. Concerning the RI-LR models, the optimal validation result for SOC was obtained by 0.75-order derivative, with the ratio of performance to inter-quartile distance (RPIQ) of 1.85. Regarding the full-spectrum modeling for SOC, the CNN outperformed PLSR and Cubist models, irrespective of raw absorbance or eight FODs; the best-performing CNN model was achieved by 1.25-order derivative (validation RPIQ = 6.33). It can be concluded that accurate estimation of SOC using large and diverse MIR spectral library at the global scale combined with deep-learning CNN model is feasible. This global-scale database is extremely valuable for us to deal with the shortage of soil data and to monitor the soils at different geographical scales.

Abstract:Soil organic carbon (SOC) is the largest carbon pool in terrestrial ecosystems and plays a crucial role in mitigating climate change and enhancing soil productivity. Microbial-derived carbon (MDC) is the main component of the persistent SOC pool. However, current formulas used to estimate the proportional contribution of MDC are plagued by uncertainties due to limited sample sizes and the neglect of bacterial group composition effects. Here, we compiled the comprehensive global dataset and employed machine learning approaches to refine our quantitative understanding of MDC contributions to total carbon storage. Our efforts resulted in a reduction in the relative standard errors in prevailing estimations by an average of 71% and minimized the effect of global variations in bacterial group compositions on estimating MDC. Our estimation indicates that MDC contributes approximately 758 Pg, representing approximately 40% of the global soil carbon stock. Our study updated the formulas of MDC estimation with improving the accuracy and preserving simplicity and practicality. Given the unique biochemistry and functioning of the MDC pool, our study has direct implications for modeling efforts and predicting the land-atmosphere carbon balance under current and future climate scenarios.
