Abstract:High-performance actuating materials are necessary for advances in robotics, prosthetics and smart clothing. Here we report a class of fibre actuators that combine solution-phase block copolymer self-assembly and strain-programmed crystallization. The actuators consist of highly aligned nanoscale structures with alternating crystalline and amorphous domains, resembling the ordered and striated pattern of mammalian skeletal muscle. The reported nanostructured block copolymer muscles excel in several aspects compared with current actuators, including efficiency (75.5%), actuation strain (80%) and mechanical properties (for example, strain-at-break of up to 900% and toughness of up to 121.2 MJ m − 3 ). The fibres exhibit on/off rotary actuation with a peak rotational speed of 450 r.p.m. Furthermore, the reported fibres demonstrate multi-trigger actuation (heat and hydration), offering switchable mechanical properties and various operating modes. The versatility and recyclability of the polymer fibres, combined with the facile fabrication method, opens new avenues for creating multifunctional and recyclable actuators using block copolymers.

Abstract:Skeletal muscle provides inspiration on how to achieve reversible, macroscopic, anisotropic motion in soft materials. Here we report on the bottom-up design of macroscopic tubes that exhibit anisotropic actuation driven by a thermal stimulus. The tube is built from a hydrogel in which extremely long supramolecular nanofibers are aligned using weak shear forces, followed by radial growth of thermoresponsive polymers from their surfaces. The hierarchically ordered tube exhibits reversible anisotropic actuation with changes in temperature, with much greater contraction perpendicular to the direction of nanofiber alignment. We identify two critical factors for the anisotropic actuation, macroscopic alignment of the supramolecular scaffold and its covalent bonding to polymer chains. Using finite element analysis and molecular calculations, we conclude polymer chain confinement and mechanical reinforcement by rigid supramolecular nanofibers are responsible for the anisotropic actuation. The work reported suggests strategies to create soft active matter with molecularly encoded capacity to perform complex tasks.

Abstract:Flexible, material‐based, artificial muscles enable compliant and safe technologies for human–machine interaction devices and adaptive soft robots, yet there remain long‐term challenges in the development of artificial muscles capable of mimicking flexible, controllable, and multifunctional human activity. Inspired by human limb's activity strategy, combining muscles' adjustable stiffness and joints' origami folding, controllable stiffness origami “skeletons,” which are created by laminar jamming and origami folding of multiple layers of flexible sandpaper, are embedded into a common monofunctional vacuumed‐powered cube‐shaped (CUBE) artificial muscle, thereby enabling the monofunctional CUBE artificial muscle to achieve lightweight and multifunctionality as well as controllable force/motion output without sacrificing its volume and shape. Successful demonstrations of arms self‐assembly and cooperatively gripping different objects and a “caterpillar” robot climbing different pipes illustrate high operational redundancy and high‐force output through “building blocks” assembly of multifunctional CUBE artificial muscles. Controllable stiffness origami “skeletons” offer a facile and low‐cost strategy to fabricate lightweight and multifunctional artificial muscles for numerous potential applications such as wearable assistant devices, miniature surgical instruments, and soft robots.

Abstract:Exploring artificial muscles based on renewable, biodegradable, and biocompatible polymer fibers is essential to broaden their applications in biomedicine and bionic fields. In this work, by constructing a poly(l-lactic acid) (PLLA)/poly(d-lactic acid) (PDLA) stereo-complex, PLA-based as-spun fibers were prepared by melt-spinning, while stretching orientation and annealing processes were further employed to improve the molecular anisotropy of the fibers (PLLA/D-S-A). On this basis, PLLA/D-S-A fiber-based artificial muscles were fabricated by twisting, coiling, and two-step heat setting. With the increase of twisting density/coiling diameter and decrease of merging strand numbers, the spring index as well as the actuating contraction strain of the artificial muscle increased. After initial training, the cyclic shrinkage–recovery process of the artificial muscle was stable, and the contraction strain remained at about 15.30% under 8 V electric stimulus by applying a load with 50 times the artificial muscle weight, exhibiting a high actuating cyclic stability. The high orientation degree in both the crystalline and amorphous regions of the PLLA/D-S-A fiber ensured a high axial negative expansibility under external stimuli, resulting in high actuating contraction strain for artificial muscles. Meanwhile, the perfect oriented crystalline structures endowed fibers with high thermal stability, and the crystallinity, contents of amorphous phase and mesophase, and the crystalline size changed slightly at the actuation temperature, which was conducive to achieving high circulatory stability for artificial muscles. Such PLA-based artificial muscles display promising applications as soft actuators in tissue engineering, healthcare, and so on.

Abstract:Electrothermal polymer artificial muscle has drawn great attention because of its unique structure for imitating the functions of natural muscles with the external thermal stimulus. Herein, we develop a thermal responsible twisted and coiled polymer fiber-based artificial muscle. In brief, the polyethylene fibers and silver-plated nylon wire are prepared; these types of fibers are twisted causing coil nucleation and ultimately nucleation of supercoils to obtain novel parallel-stranded spiral structure of artificial muscle (PE@SPN fiber artificial muscle). The excellent electrothermal property of silver-plated nylon wire contributed to the superior performance of the actuator compared to nickel wire and copper wire. The composite yarn actuator generates contractile strokes of up to 11% under 2.5 Mpa tension and outputs 140 J/kg energy density; the composite yarn actuator can work at ambient temperature about to 50 °C with high contractile stroke and long-term stability. In contrast to previous fiber actuators based on PA6 fishing line and sewing thread, which are normally operated at 100 °C, the actuator based on PE@SPN fiber artificial muscle is operated at a temperature of about 50 °C. Meanwhile, a bionic elbow joint is designed and driven by the actuator based on polyethylene fiber. We successfully demonstrate the flexion/extension of finger by using the actuation of PE@SPN fiber artificial muscle. The results of experiments show that the promise as a soft actuator towards prosthetics, wearable robot, and power-assisted device applications.

Abstract:Morphing botanical tissues and animal muscles are all fiber-mediated composites, in which fibers play a passive and active role, respectively. Herein, inspired by the mechanism of fibers functioning in morphing botanical tissues and animal muscles, we propose two sorts of fiber-dominated composite actuators. First, inspired by the deformation of awned seeds in response to humidity change, we fabricate passive fiber-dominated actuators using non-active aligned carbon fibers via 4D printing method. The effects of process parameters, structural parameters, and fiber angles on the deformation of the printed actuators are examined. The experimental results show that the orientation degree is enhanced, resulting in a better swelling effect as the printing speed increases. Then, motivated by the actuation mechanism of skeletal muscle, we prepare active fiber-dominated actuators using active polyurethane fibers via 4D printing and pre-stretching method. The effect of fiber angle and loading on the actuation mode is experimentally analyzed. The experimental results show that the rotation angle of the actuator gradually decreases with the angle from 45° to 60°. When the fiber angle is 0° and 90°, the driver basically stops rotating while shrinking along the loading direction. Based on the above actuation mechanisms, identical contraction behaviors are realized both in passive and active fiber-dominated soft actuators. This work provides a validation method for biologically actuation mechanisms via 4D printing technique and smart materials and adds further insights to the design of bioinspired soft actuators.

Muscle-Mimetic Synergistic Covalent and Supramolecular Polymers: Phototriggered Formation Leads to Mechanical Performance Boost

Abstract:A thin filament stimulated by Ca<sup>2+</sup> to combine with myosin is the structural basis to achieve filament sliding and muscle contraction. Though a large variety of artificial materials has been developed by mimicking muscle, the on-demand combination of the actin filament and myosin has never been precisely reproduced in polymeric systems. Herein, we show that both the combination process and the combined structure of actin filament and myosin have been mimicked to construct synergistic covalent and supramolecular polymers (CSPs). Specifically, photoirradiation as a stimulus induces the independently formed covalent polymers (CPs) and supramolecular polymers (SPs) to interact with each other through activated quadruple H-bonding. The resultant CSPs possess a unique network structure which not only facilitates the synergistic effect of CPs and SPs to afford stiff, strong, yet tough materials but also provides efficient pathways to dissipate energy with the damping capacity of the representative material being higher than 95%. Furthermore, muscle functions, for example, by becoming stiff during contraction and self-growth by training, are imitated well in our system via <i>in situ</i> phototriggered formation of CSP in the solid state. Abstract:Biological muscles are composed of aligned actuatable fiber units to generate directional linear output, inspiring the design of microstructures in artificial muscles. However, synthetic soft elastomers generally possess isotropic mechanical properties; therefore, a promising artificial muscle (dielectric elastomer actuator) generally outputs nondirectional force or deformation. In this work, we report a muscle-mimetic anisotropic dielectric elastomer fiber with directional output driven by electric field. The millimeter-in-diameter fibers are fabricated by rolling elastomeric ultrathin films of triblock copolymer that are pretreated to generate aligned nanostructures and network strands. We theoretically and experimentally reveal that a moderate orthogonal modulus ratio of radial to axial directions (2.8) leads to highly directional actuation, enhancing linear axial strain by 100%. Assembling the anisotropic fine fibers into bundles is able to scale up force output and enables variable motion modes such as extension, bend, and rotation.

Abstract:Artificial muscle materials promise incredible applications in actuators, robotics and medical apparatus, yet the ability to mimic the full characteristics of skeletal muscles into synthetic materials remains a huge challenge. Herein, inspired by the dynamic sacrificial bonds in biomaterials and the self-strengthening of skeletal muscles by physical exercise, high performance artificial muscle material is prepared by rearrangement of sacrificial coordination bonds in the polyolefin elastomer via a repetitive mechanical training process. Biomass lignin is incorporated as a green reinforcer for the construction of interfacial coordination bonds. The prepared artificial muscle material exhibits high actuation strain (>40%), high actuation stress (1.5 MPa) which can lift more than 10,000 times its own weight with 30% strain, characteristics of excellent self-strengthening by mechanical training, strain-adaptive stiffening, and heat/electric programmable actuation performance. In this work, we show a facile strategy for the fabrication of intelligent materials using easily available raw materials.
Polymer Complex Fiber for Linear Actuation with High Working Density and Stable Catch-State

Abstract:Fiber-based linear actuators (FLAs) are a key module in microrobots and biomimetic devices. It has been a great challenge to develop linear actuators that can balance output stress and output strain and hence provide high working density. Herein, we report the preparation and performance of a FLA system made from commercially available materials and allowed mass production at relatively low cost. The FLAs can lift up or lay down objects more than 1000 times of its own weight during active contraction and expansion under environmental stimuli. The contraction ratio and output stress can reach 30% and 0.24 MPa, respectively, and the sustainable work density is about 80 J/kg, which is 10 times the typical value of human skeletal muscles. Abstract:Dielectric elastomers have become promising candidates for applications of artificial muscle, due to their outstanding properties on large deformation, fast response and high energy density. Diverse functional devices based on dielectric elastomer actuators have been developed. To mimic a slender shape muscle-like actuator with the capability of large actuation, however still remains a challenge. The fiber constrained dielectric elastomer actuator (FCDEA) was previously presented but only 30% unidirectional actuation strain was obtained. In this work, By using suitable stiff fibers to withstand large horizontal pre-stretch, up to 142% linear actuation strain is achieved. We demonstrate that the actuator is independent of the length ratio, making it possible to mimic natural muscle of slender shape. Theoretical predictions agree remarkably well with the experimental results. As a demonstration, we incorporate the FCDEA into a bioinspired artificial arm. After applying voltage, 70 degree rotation is achieved for the forearm relative to the fixed upper arm. The bioinspired design with the unique properties of dielectric elastomers shows the potential to use FCDEA to function as artificial muscle.
Ultra-Tough, yet Rigid and Healable Supramolecular Polymers with Variable Stiffness for Multimodal Actuators

Abstract:Variable stiffness materials have shown considerable application in soft robotics. However, previously reported materials often struggle to reconcile high stiffness, stretchability, toughness, and self-healing ability, because of the inherently conflicting requisite of these properties in molecular design. Herein, we propose a novel strategy that involves incorporating acid-base ionic pairs capable of from strong crosslinking sites into a dense and robust hydrogen-bonding network to construct rigid self-healing polymers with tunable stiffness and excellent toughness. To demonstrate these distinct features, the polymer was employed to serve as the strain-regulation layers within a fiber-reinforced pneumatic actuator (FPA). The exceptional synergy between the configuration versatility of FPA and the dynamic molecular behavior of the supramolecular polymers equips the actuator with simultaneous improvement in motion dexterity, multimodality, loading capacity, robustness, and durability. Additionally, the concept of integrating high dexterity at both macro- and micro-scale is prospective to inspire the design of intelligent yet robust devices across various domains.
Human-muscle-inspired single fibre actuator with reversible percolation

Abstract:Artificial muscles are indispensable components for next-generation robotics capable of mimicking sophisticated movements of living systems. However, an optimal combination of actuation parameters, including strain, stress, energy density and high mechanical strength, is required for their practical applications. Here we report mammalian-skeletal-muscle-inspired single fibres and bundles with large and strong contractive actuation. The use of exfoliated graphene fillers within a uniaxial liquid crystalline matrix enables photothermal actuation with large work capacity and rapid response. Moreover, the reversible percolation of graphene fillers induced by the thermodynamic conformational transition of mesoscale structures can be in situ monitored by electrical switching. Such a dynamic percolation behaviour effectively strengthens the mechanical properties of the actuator fibres, particularly in the contracted actuation state, enabling mammalian-muscle-like reliable reversible actuation. Taking advantage of a mechanically compliant fibre structure, smart actuators are readily integrated into strong bundles as well as high-power soft robotics with light-driven remote control.
Bioengineering Fascicle-like Skeletal Muscle Bioactuators via Pluronic-Assisted Co-axial 3D Bioprinting

Abstract:Advances in 3D bioprinting have opened new possibilities in the development of bioengineered muscle models that mimic the structure and functionality of native tissues. The combination of skeletal muscle tissue and artificial elements promotes diverse innovative solutions of interest in both the biomedical field and the development of biohybrid actuators. However, current bioengineering approaches do not fully recreate the complex fascicle-like hierarchical organization of skeletal muscle, impacting on the muscle maturation process due to a lack of oxygen and nutrients supply in the scaffold inner regions. Here we explored co-axial 3D bioprinting as a strategy towards overcoming this challenge, creating individual/non-fused filaments with controlled thickness that present a fascicle-like organization. Compared to conventional 3D-bioprinting, where cell-laden bioink is disposed by a single syringe, our Pluronic-assisted co-axial 3D-bioprinting system (PACA-3D) creates a physical confinement of the bioink during the extrusion process, effectively obtaining thin and independent printed fibers with controlled shape. Fabrication of skeletal muscle-based actuators with PACA-3D resulted in improved cell differentiation, obtaining stronger bioactuators with increased force output when compared to bioactuators fabricated by conventional 3D bioprinting. The versatility of our technology has been demonstrated using different biomaterials, showing its potential to develop more complex biohybrid tissue-based architectures with improved functionality.

Bilayered Biofabrication Unlocks the Potential of Skeletal Muscle for Biohybrid Soft Robots

Abstract:The emerging field of biohybrid robotics aims to create the next generation of soft and sustainable robots by using engineered biological muscle tissues integrated with soft materials as artificial muscles (bio-actuators). Both cardiac and skeletal muscle cells can be used for biohybrid actuation. Generally, cardiac bio-actuators take the shape of thin cellular films, while locomotive skeletal muscle bio-actuators form bulk tissues. The geometry of a bio-actuator should be optimized for the type of desired motion, ., thin film layers are optimal for swimming actuators mimicking fish. Until now, the geometry of skeletal muscle bio-actuators has been constrained to ring- or block-like tissues generally differentiated around a pair of pillars due to the need to oppose the contraction force exerted during the skeletal muscle differentiation process. In this work, we extend the possible geometry of skeletal muscle bio-actuators by demonstrating a bilayered design that mimics the motion of jellyfish. We take advantage of a volumetric printing method, ., xolography, which allows us to micropattern poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate and gelatin methacrylate hydrogels to serve as scaffolds for seeding a layer of the skeletal muscle cell matrix. We demonstrate the locomotion speed of our bio-actuators is 3.4x faster than previously reported counterparts. In addition, our skeletal bio-actuators outperform most cardiac ones. Further optimization of our bilayer biofabrication for improved reproducibility of the maturation process of the skeletal muscle tissue will pave the way for the next generation of performant skeletal muscle-based actuators for biohybrid robots.

A NIR-Light-Driven Twisted and Coiled Polymer Actuator with a PEDOT-Tos/Nylon-6 Composite for Durable and Remotely Controllable Artificial Muscle

Abstract:In this paper, we proposed a novel light-driven polymer actuator that could produce remotely controllable tensile stroke in response to near infrared (NIR) light. The light-driven polymer actuator was composed of a twisted and coiled nylon-6 fiber (TCN) and a thin poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) doped with p-toluenesulfonate (PEDOT-Tos) layer. By adopting dip-coating methodology with thermal polymerization process, we constructed a thin and uniform PEDOT-Tos layer on the surface of the three-dimensional TCN structure. Thanks to the PEDOT-Tos layer with excellent NIR light absorption characteristic, the NIR light illumination via a small LEDs array allowed the multiple PEDOT-Tos coated TCN actuators to be photo-thermally heated to a fairly consistent temperature and to simultaneously produce a contractile strain that could be modulated as high as 8.7% with light power. The actuation performance was reversible without any significant hysteresis and highly durable during 3000 cyclic operations via repetitive control of the LEDs. Together with its simple structure and facile fabrication, the light-driven actuator can lead to technical advances in artificial muscles due to its attractive benefits from remote controllability without complex coupled instruments and electromagnetic interference.

Skate Fin‐Mimetic Muscle‐Cartilage Structured Fabric Layer for Robust and Muti‐Function Actuation Systems

Abstract:A robust fabric‐skeletoned actuator mimicking the unique "muscle‐cartilage" structure of Skate's fin is developed. It can simultaneously tackle the challenges in mechanical strength and environment tolerance, as well as endowed with anisotropic actuation and fast wet recovery properties, enriching the designability and application scenarios for programmable motion series or automatic task execution. Actuators based on stimuli‐responsive polymers (SRP) have great potential applications in soft robots, remote control, artificial muscle, etc., but their practical robustness is usually limited by mechanical strength and environmental tolerance. Inspired by the unique "muscle‐cartilage" structure of Skate fin, a general strategy is developed for improving the mechanical strength and environmental tolerance of SRP actuators by introducing a twill cotton fabric as the supporting cartilage. Besides, benefiting from the special twill pattern and micro‐nano substructure of the fabric layer, the prepared SRP actuator possesses anisotropic actuation and fast wet recovery, which further enriches its versatility. This SRP actuator can be extended to complicated actuation systems with programmable motion series or cyclic task execution by simply heat‐soldering or assembling with other functional components. The method provides an idea in simultaneously addressing the practical robustness and rich extensibility of SRP actuators, facilitating their application in complex environments or multi‐tasking scenarios.

Conjugated polymer composite artificial muscle with solvent-induced anisotropic mechanical actuation

Abstract:Responsive polymers have been widely studied as actuators in response to external stimuli and exhibit promising applications in wide variety of fields. However, the actuating direction of most polymers cannot be precisely controlled, and the generated low stress and poor stability cannot meet practical applications either. Herein, conjugated polymer/aligned multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) composites are designed, which can undergo anisotropic and reversible bending/unbending actuations driven by solvents. The actuating direction was accurately controlled to be perpendicular to the MWCNT length, which is realized through the orientation of conjugated polymers induced by aligned MWCNTs. The actuation generates a stress of 15 MPa, approximately 42 times of the strongest human muscle, and the reversible actuations are repeated for 300 cycles without fatigue. These composite artificial muscles can be widely used in numerous fields, such as sensors and actuators.
Scalable Approach to Molecular Motor-Polymer Conjugates for Light-Driven Artificial Muscles

Abstract:The integration of molecular machines and motors into materials represents a promising avenue for creating dynamic and functional molecular systems, with potential applications in soft robotics or reconfigurable biomaterials. However, the development of truly scalable and controllable approaches for incorporating molecular motors into polymeric matrices has remained a challenge. Here, we show that light-driven molecular motors with sensitive photo-isomerizable double bonds can be converted into initiators for Cu-mediated controlled/living radical polymerization enabling the synthesis of star-shaped motor-polymer conjugates. This approach enables scalability, precise control over molecular structure, block copolymer structures, and high end group fidelity. Moreover, we demonstrate that these materials can be crosslinked to form gels with quasi-ideal network topology, exhibiting light-triggered contraction. We investigate the influence of arm length and polymer structure, and develop the first molecular dynamics simulation framework to gain deeper insights into the contraction processes. Leveraging this scalable methodology, we showcase the creation of bilayer soft robotic devices and cargo-lifting artificial muscles, highlighting the versatility and potential applications of this advanced polymer chemistry approach. We anticipate that our integrated experimental and simulation framework will accelerate scalable approaches for active polymer materials based on molecular machines, opening up new horizons in materials science and bioscience.

Abstract:Unlike traditional actuators, such as piezoelectric ceramic or metallic actuators, polymer actuators are currently attracting more interest in biomedicine due to their unique properties, such as light weight, easy processing, biodegradability, fast response, large active strains, and good mechanical properties. They can be actuated under external stimuli, such as chemical (pH changes), electric, humidity, light, temperature, and magnetic field. Electroactive polymers (EAPs), called ‘artificial muscles’, can be activated by an electric stimulus, and fixed into a temporary shape. Restoring their permanent shape after the release of an electrical field, electroactive polymer is considered the most attractive actuator type because of its high suitability for prosthetics and soft robotics applications. However, robust control, modeling non-linear behavior, and scalable fabrication are considered the most critical challenges for applying the soft robotic systems in real conditions. Researchers from around the world investigate the scientific and engineering foundations of polymer actuators, especially the principles of their work, for the purpose of a better control of their capability and durability. The activation method of actuators and the realization of required mechanical properties are the main restrictions on using actuators in real applications. The latest highlights, operating principles, perspectives, and challenges of electroactive materials (EAPs) such as dielectric EAPs, ferroelectric polymers, electrostrictive graft elastomers, liquid crystal elastomers, ionic gels, and ionic polymer–metal composites are reviewed in this article.
