Abstract:Abstract Purpose The study aimed to investigate the prevalence of dry eye disease (DED) and relevant risk factors among Chinese high school students during the COVID-19 outbreak. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted from November to December 2020, and 4825 high school students from nine high schools in Shanghai were recruited. All students completed ocular surface disease index (OSDI) and perceived stress scale (PSS) questionnaires and answered other questions designed to ascertain information on the risk factors related to DED. DED was diagnosed when OSDI scores were greater than or equal to 13. The prevalence of symptomatic DED was determined. A T-test, Kruskal-Wallis test, Chi-square test, and logistic regression analysis were used to examine the possible risk factors. Results The prevalence of symptomatic DED among Chinese high school students was 70.5%. In univariate analysis, higher PSS scores ( P <0.001), prolonged video display terminal (VDT) use ( P <0.001), wearing contact lenses ( P =0.001), poor sleep quality ( P <0.001), and being female ( P <0.001) were significantly correlated with dry eyes. In multivariate logistic regression analysis, higher PSS scores ( P <0.001, OR=1.20), prolonged VDT use ( P <0.001, OR=1.07), poor sleep quality ( P <0.001, OR=1.84), and being female ( P =0.001, OR=1.25) were significant risk factors associated with DED. Conclusions Due to the epidemic, most Chinese high school students are in a high-risk environment in which they are more likely to suffer from DED, such as long online courses and heavy stress from school. Relevant preventive measures that may have a positive impact on public health and quality of life for high school students should be brought to the forefront.

Evaluation of dry eye disease symptomatology and mental health status among patients with different COVID-19 statuses

Abstract:AIM: To evaluate dry eye disease (DED) symptomatology and mental health status in different COVID-19 patients. METHODS: A cross-sectional observational design was used. Totally 123 eligible adults (46.34% of men, age range, 18-59y) with COVID-19 included in the study from August to November, 2022. Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI), Five-item Dry Eye Questionnaire (DEQ-5), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) were used in this study. RESULTS: OSDI scores were 6.82 (1.25, 15.91) in asymptomatic carriers, 7.35 (2.50, 18.38) in mild cases, and 16.67 (4.43, 28.04) in recurrent cases, with 30.00%, 35.56%, and 57.89%, respectively evaluated as having DED symptoms (χ2=7.049, P=0.029). DEQ-5 score varied from 2.00 (0, 6.00) in asymptomatic carriers, 3.00 (0, 8.00) in mild cases, and 8.00 (5.00, 10.00) in recurrent cases, with 27.50%, 33.33%, and 55.26%, respectively assessed as having DED symptoms (χ2=8.532, P=0.014). The prevalence of clinical anxiety (50.00%) and depression (47.37%) symptoms were also significantly higher in patients with recurrent infection (χ2=24.541, P<0.001; χ2=30.871, P<0.001). Recurrent infection was a risk factor for high OSDI scores [odds ratio, 2.562; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.631-7.979; P=0.033] and DEQ-5 scores (odds ratio, 3.353; 95%CI, 1.038-8.834; P=0.043), whereas having a fixed occupation was a protective factor for OSDI scores (odds ratio, 0.088; 95%CI, 0.022-0.360; P=0.001) and DEQ-5 scores (odds ratio, 0.126; 95%CI, 0.039-0.405; P=0.001). CONCLUSION: Patients with recurrent COVID-19 have more severe symptoms of DED, anxiety, and depression.

Evaluation of Ocular Symptoms and Tropism of SARS‐CoV‐2 in Patients Confirmed with COVID‐19

Abstract:Purpose The SARS-CoV-2 RNA has been detected in tears and conjunctival samples from infected individuals. Conjunctivitis is also reported in a small number of cases. We evaluated ocular symptoms and ocular tropism of SARS-CoV-2 in a group of patients with COVID-19. Method Fifty-six patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 were recruited as subjects. Relevant medical histories were obtained from the electronic medical record system. Ocular history and ocular symptoms data were obtained by communicating directly with the subjects. The Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) and Salisbury Eye Evaluation Questionnaire (SEEQ) were used to assess the anterior ocular surface condition before and after the onset of disease. Results Patients classified as severe COVID-19 cases were more likely to have hypertension compared to mild cases (p = 0.035). Of the 56 subjects, thirteen patients (23%) were infected in Wuhan, 32 patients (57%) were community-infected, 10 patients (18%) were unknown origin, 1 (2%) was a physician likely infected by a confirmed patient. Three patients wore face mask with precaution when contacting the confirmed patients. Fifteen (27%) had aggravated ocular symptoms, of which 6 (11%) had prodromal ocular symptoms before disease onset. The differences in mean scores of OSDI questionnaire and SEEQ between before and after onset of COVID-19 were all significant (p < 0.05 for both). Conclusions Ocular symptoms are relatively common in COVID-19 disease and may appear just before the onset of respiratory symptoms. Our data provided the anecdotal evidences of transmission of SARS-CoV-2 via ocular surface.

Abstract:Purpose To examine the association between ambient air pollution and dry eye symptoms (DES) during the COVID-19 pandemic and explore whether air pollution had increased the risk of DES to a greater extent than other risk factors. Methods A nationwide cross-sectional survey was conducted from June 20, 2022 to August 31, 2022. The Ocular Surface Disease Index-6 (OSDI-6) questionnaire was used to assess the presence of DES. Logistic regression models were employed to analyze the associations between DES and air pollution variables, including air quality index (AQI), fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ), PM 10 , sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ), ozone (O 3 ) and residing near industrial zones. We explored the interactions of air pollutants and other risk factors in the additive models by calculating the synergy index (SI). Standardized regression coefficients were calculated to compare the relative importance of risk factors for DES. Results A total of 21,909 participants were included in the analysis. Residing near industrial zones was significantly correlated with a higher risk of DES (Odds ratio (OR): 1.57, 95 % confidence interval (CI): 1.38–1.79). No significant associations were found between DES and air pollutants except SO 2 (OR: 1.05, 95 % CI: 1.02–1.09, per standard deviation increment in SO 2 concentration). The restricted cubic spline analyses revealed a linear concentration-response relationship between SO 2 and DES. The interaction analyses suggested synergetic interactions of SO 2 with depression and problematic internet use. Among the risk factors, depression, anxiety and problematic Internet use contributed more to the increased risk of DES. Conclusion The association between ambient air pollutants and DES may have been mitigated during the pandemic due to increased time spent indoors. Despite this, our findings support the deleterious health impact of air pollutants. Future urban planning should plan industrial zones further away from residential areas.

Abstract:A battery of psychological tests was administered to 26 medical students in a counterbalanced cross-over design to determine the effects of an acute dose of alcohol on perceptual, perceptual-motor and cognitive capacities. The tests included: temporal acuity (critical flicker fusion threshold), perceptual speed and attention (Stroop), perceptual-motor coordination (Purdue Pegboard), perceptual-motor speed (simple and choice reaction time), immediate memory (WAIS Digit Span), short-term memory (dichotic stimulation), and intellectual and conceptual capacity (Shipley Institute of Living Scale). Three general conclusions were drawn: (1) alcohol exerted a deteriorating effect on performance on all tasks except the Stroop, (2) retesting 48 hr. later showed that practice or familiarity with the task mitigated the effects of the alcohol, and (3) contrary to the hypothesis advanced by Jellineck and McFarland (1940), no systematic relationship was observed between task complexity and degree of impairment from the alcohol.
Assessment of prevalence of dry eye among medical students using ocular surface disease index questionnaire - Is COVID-19 to be really blamed?

Abstract:Purpose: An undergraduate research conducted during the pre-covid times, to highlight the importance of screen time and its association with dry eye in medical students. The aim was to study the prevalence of dry eye among medical students using the ocular surface index (OSDI) questionnaire. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study. This study was conducted among medical students using an OSDI questionnaire in the pre-covid times. Based on the pilot study, the minimum sample size calculated was 245. A total of 310 medical students participated in the study. These medical students answered the OSDI questionnaire. The OSDI score was used to categorize students with dry eye as mild (13-22 points), moderate (23-32 points), and severe (33-100 points). In addition, the associations between the OSDI score and possible risk factors such as gender, contact lens/spectacle wear, laptop/mobile usage, and duration of exposure to air conditioners were also studied. Results: The analysis of the study revealed that out of 310 students, dry eye was seen in 143 (46.1%) and severe dry eyes were seen in 50 (16.1%). A high OSDI score (>13 points) was associated with the usage of a laptop/mobile for more than 6 h in 40 (52.6%) (P < 0.001). Conclusion: The prevalence of dry eye among medical students was 46.1% in the present study. Longer duration of usage of visual display units (laptop/mobile) was the only factor that showed a statistically significant association with dry eye in our study.

Abstract: A method is described for fractionation of extracts of short-ragweed pollen using column chromatography with DEAE-cellulose. There appear to be at least seven distinct allergens; four major and three minor, in the phosphate extract of short-ragweed pollen. Practically all patients react to one major allergen but only about 50% react with three other major allergens. The reaction patterns of different patients differ. The patients react to one or more (up to five) of the allergen fractions, but in multiple reactions the fractions are not always the same. The importance of these findings in the treatment of the ragweed sensitive patient is discussed.

Abstract:Dry eye syndrome (DES), is a multifactorial disease that affects the ocular surface and contributes to the ocular symptoms. The COVID-19 pandemic influenced the general population and university students' health in different ways. The pandemic forced many people including university students around the world to use virtual platforms on their digital devices, such as computers and smartphones, to work from a distance. This study aimed to explore the visual health and prevalence of dry eye syndrome among university students in Iraq and Jordan. This was a cross-sectional study that was conducted in Iraq and Jordan using online questionnaire tool for the duration between November 2021 and January 2022. University students in Jordan and Iraq were invited to participate in this study and formed the study population. No restrictions on study level or field of study were applied. A previously developed and validated questionnaire tools were used in this study (National Eye Institute Visual Functioning Questionnaire – 25 (VFQ-25) and the Women's Health Study Questionnaire (WHS), which was developed by Schaumberg et al.). A total of 1,431 university students were involved in this study (1,018 students from Iraq, 71.1%). Around one third the study participants (29.0%) reported that have been diagnosed by a clinician as having dry eye syndrome. Around15.3% of the total study participants reported that they feel their eyes are dry (not wet enough) and 17.3% reported that they feel their eyes are irritated. Based on Women's Health Study Questionnaire (WHS) criteria, a total of 479 participants (33.4%) are symptomatically diagnosed with DES. Students aged 27–29 years, those at their fifth year of study, and those who wear contact lenses are at higher risk of developing DYS compared to others. Dry eye syndrome is common health problem among university students. Further studies are required to identify other risk factors associated with DES. Future research should focus on identifying strategies that could help reduce the risk of developing DES as a result of the inevitability of long-term use of digital devices among many categories of society, including university students.

A study on correlation of computer vision syndrome and dry eye disease and knowledge regarding its associated factors amongst health professionals

Abstract:Purpose: To know the magnitude and determinants of dry eye syndrome among health professionals and to study the correlation of computer vision syndrome with dry eye disease.Methods: In total, 501 participants took part in the study, which included history followed by baseline ocular examination, which included visual acuity using Snellen's chart and anterior segment examination using a slit lamp. Later, a questionnaire was administered to health professionals to be filled out for analysis in the present study.Results: The symptoms reported occasionally were burning (35.5%), itching (34.5%), foreign body sensation 22.6%, and tearing (35.3%). The majority of participants used mobiles and laptops (56.1%) as a display. Also, 53.3% of participants have heard about dry eye syndrome, and the source of information was from friends and doctors in 17% of participants. One hundred twenty-one participants (24.2%) had taken the consultation for ocular symptoms. Eighty-six participants had mild, 29 participants had moderate, and 6 participants had severe dry eye disease, respectively. Conclusion: The pandemic effect, and the drastic shift of educational media from the classroom to the digital platform have increased the use of mobiles, laptops, or other digital pads for learning. This has increased the risk for health professionals.

Abstract:PURPOSE:To compare the impact of dry eye syndrome (DES) on vision-related quality of life (VR-QoL) between outpatients and general populations. METHODS:This cross-sectional comparative study enrolled 154 participants, 77 outpatients and 77 general participants, all of whom met the diagnostic criteria of DES. Apart from the collection of sociodemographic and clinical data, the Chinese version of 25-item National Eye Institute Visual Functioning Questionnaire (NEI VFQ-25) and Ocular Surface Disease Index Questionnaire (OSDI) were administered. Main outcome measures include the comparison on the OSDI score and VFQ-25 score between two groups, and their correlation with sociodemographic and clinical data. RESULTS:The two groups were comparable concerning sociodemographic parameters except that the outpatients were better educated (χ(2) = 18.609, p < 0.001). The ophthalmic data related with DES did not have statistically significant differences between two groups except that the proportion of subjects with positive corneal fluorescein staining (CFS) was higher in outpatients (χ(2) = 21.296, p < 0.001). The outpatients reported significantly higher OSDI scores and lower VFQ-25 scores. The VFQ-25 composite score had negative correlation with the OSDI score of all participants or that of outpatients solely (ρ = -0.247 and -0.397, p = 0.030 and 0.000, respectively). Among outpatients, the value of Schirmer test (ST), tear film breakup time (TBUT) and CFS in the eyes with worse DES had significant correlations with the OSDI overall scores, while TBUT and CFS of both eyes correlated with the VFQ-25 composite score. CONCLUSIONS:DES exerts more adverse impact on VR-QoL in outpatients than general patients. The impairment of VR-QoL has a significant correlation with the severity of DES.
Mental Health Status of Doctors and Nurses During COVID-19 Epidemic in China

Abstract:Background: The sudden epidemic of COVID-19 in China caused attention globally. Health staff are in heavy workload and at high-risk infection. The aims of this study were to investigate the mental health status of health staff and to identify the key population of psychological intervention. Methods: Health staff were invited to attend an anonymous WeChat-based survey between Feb 17 to 24, 2020. Sample was collected based on a non-probability sampling procedure. Three mental health problems during the past week including psychological distress, anxious symptoms, and depressive symptoms were evaluated by WHO 20-item Self-Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ-20), the Zung Self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), and the Zung Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS) respectively. The characteristics of hospitals and participants were also collected in the survey. Findings: Totally 4679 doctors and nurses from 348 hospitals in 31 provinces of mainland China completed the survey. The prevalence of psychological distress, anxious symptoms, and depressive symptoms were 15‧9% (95% CI 14‧8-16‧9), 16‧0% (95% CI 15‧0-17‧1), and 34‧6% (95% CI 33‧2-35‧9). Those with middle age, being divorced or widowed, seldom or not living with family members, being a nurse, working at high-risk departments, having experiences of treatment for COVID-19 or other infectious diseases, from designated hospitals for COVID-19 treatment, non-infectious disease hospitals, and higher level hospitals had higher risk to have at least one of the mental health problems. Medical staff with three mental health problems (23‧2%) received less psychological help compared with those without any problem (35‧3%). Interpretation: Those with features of high-risk mental health problems should be set as priority for psychiatric interventions, especially when mental health professionals are not sufficient in China. Relationship between symptoms of dry eye syndrome and occupational characteristics: the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2010–2012

Abstract:BackgroundDry Eye Syndrome (DES) is a broad spectrum of uncomfortable ocular conditions that are caused by reduced production of tears or an increased tear evaporation rate. This study evaluated the relationship between symptoms of DES and occupational characteristics to identify the occupation-dependent differences in the prevalence of symptoms of DES using the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey V (2010–2012) data.MethodsA total of 6023 participants were included (3203 men and 2820 women). Questionnaires and physical examinations were used to record clinical characteristics, occupational characteristics and medical history. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95 % confidence intervals (95 % CIs) for symptoms of DES were calculated according to the occupational characteristics.ResultsAmong the participants, 963 persons (16.0 %) had symptoms of DES. An increased risk (relative to the green-collar group) was observed for the ordinary white-collar (OR, 1.73; 95 % CI, 1.73–1.41), executive white-collar (OR, 1.40; 95 % CI, 1.02–1.92) and skilled blue-collar (OR, 1.44; 95 % CI, 1.04–2.00) groups. Furthermore, paid workers had a significantly higher risk of dry eye symptoms (OR, 1.21; 95 % CI, 1.02–1.45), compared to self-employed workers.ConclusionOur study is the first research to reveal that white-collar workers have a higher risk of symptoms of DES than blue-collar workers, that skilled blue-collar workers have a higher risk than unskilled blue-collar workers, and that paid workers have a higher risk than self-employed workers.

[Randomly sampling survey of dry eye awareness in general eye clinic]

Abstract:Objective: To determine the dry eye awareness in the populations visiting general eye clinic. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study. A questionnaire about dry eye was designed and administrated to Peking University Third Hospital General Eye Clinic patients (n = 804) from June 2010 to June 2011. The questionnaire contents included general demographic characteristics, experience of health-related work, past medical history, medication history and ocular surface symptoms associated with dry eye, contact lens wearing, ocular operation history, etc. Chi-square and Binary logistic regression analysis was used to determine the influence of demographic and clinical features on awareness of dry eye. Results: Awareness of "dry eye" in the general eye clinical patients was relatively low (26.9%, 216/804). Participants whose age were between 40 and 60 years had better dry eye awareness (41.7%, 73/175) (χ(2) = 27.365, P = 0.000). Dry eye awareness of female was better than that of male [female: 33.8% (151/447), male: 18.2% (65/357), χ(2) = 24.500, P = 0.000]. Those who had been in health-related work (71.4%, 30/42), and whose friends or relatives were ophthalmologists (54.7%, 52/95) had better dry eye awareness (χ(2) = 31.582, 36.400; both P < 0.01). Participants with a history of rheumatoid arthritis (7/10) or diabetes mellitus (63.0%, 17/27) had better dry eye awareness (χ(2) = 32.301, 29.887;both P < 0.01). Those who had been using artificial tears (77.5%, 31/40), oral contraceptives (9/14), diuretics (10/18), sedatives (70.4%, 19/27) and anti-depression drugs (4/4) had better dry eye awareness (χ(2) = 54.928, 10.154, 7.713, 26.912, 10.943; all P < 0.01). Except frequently blinking (29.5%), participants who had ocular irrigating symptoms (all > 33.0%) had better awareness than those who had not (χ(2) = 7.831 - 32.522, all P < 0.01). Those who were allergic to environment irritating factors (all > 30.0%) had better awareness (χ(2) = 5.033 - 24.564, all P < 0.01). Participants who had medical history of ocular surgery (47.2%, 34/72), experience of wearing contact lens (33.2%, 94/283), who were diagnosed as dry eye (100.0%, 45/45) and who had regular ocular examinations (31.0%, 96/310) had better awareness (χ(2) = 4.321 - 129.763, all P < 0.01). Those who had visited general practitioners (14.8%, 16/108) had lower awareness than those who went to hospital of higher level (28.7%, 200/696) (χ(2) = 9.324, P = 0.002). The result of binary logistic regression analysis showed that gender, health-related working experience, relatives or friends working as Ophthalmologists, using artificial tears, oral contraceptives and sedatives, ocular irritations or environment sensitivity, eye surgeries and wearing contact lens were factors that affected dry eye awareness (OR > 1.000, P < 0.10). Conclusions: Dry eye awareness in the population who visit general eye clinic is low. The knowledge of dry eye should be added to the patient education and public popularization.
Prolonged facemask wearing among hospital workers and dry eye - a mixed-methods study

Abstract:Background: Prolonged facemask wearing may have negatively affected essential workers with dry eye. We conducted a mixed-methods study to examine and understand the associations of the ocular surface, periocular environment, and dry eye-related symptoms among hospital workers across the job spectrum with prolonged facemask use. Methods: We recruited clinical and non-clinical hospital workers with self-reported symptoms of dry eye and prolonged facemask use. We measured symptoms using the 5-item Dry Eye Questionnaire and the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI). Objective ocular signs included corneal and conjunctival staining, fluorescein tear break up time (TBUT), meibography, tear film interferometry, and periocular humidity. We compared symptoms and signs across levels of periocular humidity, dry eye severity, facemask type, and job type. Participants with moderate or severe dry eye symptoms (OSDI > = 23) were invited for a semi-structured, one-on-one interview. Results: We enrolled 20 clinical and 21 non-clinical hospital workers: 27% were 40 years or older, 76% were female, 29% reported a race other than White, and 20% were Hispanic. Seventeen individuals participated in the semi-structured interviews. From the quantitative analyses, we found that 90% of participants reported worsened severity of dry eye at work due to facemasks. Although wearing facemasks resulted in higher periocular humidity levels compared with not wearing facemasks, 66% participants reported increased airflow over their eyes. Findings from the qualitative interviews supported the finding that use of facemasks worsened dry eye symptoms, especially when facemasks were not fitted around the nose. The data did not suggest that non-clinical hospital workers experienced a greater impact of dry eye than clinical workers. Conclusions: Healthcare providers and patients with dry eye should be educated about the discomfort and the ocular surface health risks associated with inadequately fitted facemasks. Wearing a fitted facemask with a pliable nose wire appears to mitigate the upward airflow.

Abstract:<h3>Importance</h3><p>The proportion of daily wearers of eyeglasses among patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is small, and the association between daily wear of eyeglasses and COVID-19 susceptibility has not been reported.</p><h3>Objective</h3><p>To study the association between the daily wearing of eyeglasses and the susceptibility to COVID-19.</p><h3>Design, Setting, and Participants</h3><p>This cohort study enrolled all inpatients with COVID-19 in Suizhou Zengdu Hospital, Suizhou, China, a designated hospital for COVID-19 treatment in the area, from January 27 to March 13, 2020. COVID-19 was diagnosed according to the fifth edition of Chinese COVID-19 diagnostic guidelines. The proportion of persons with myopia who wore eyeglasses in Hubei province was based on data from a previous study.</p><h3>Exposures</h3><p>Daily wearing of eyeglasses for more than 8 hours.</p><h3>Main Outcomes and Measures</h3><p>The main outcomes were the proportions of daily wearers of eyeglasses among patients admitted to the hospital with COVID-19 and among the local population. Data on exposure history, clinical symptoms, underlying diseases, duration of wearing glasses, and myopia status and the proportion of people with myopia who wore eyeglasses in Hubei province were collected. People who wore glasses for more than 8 hours a day were defined as long-term wearers.</p><h3>Results</h3><p>A total of 276 patients with COVID-19 were enrolled. Of these, 155 (56.2%) were male, and the median age was 51 (interquartile range, 41-58) years. All those who wore glasses for more than 8 hours a day had myopia and included 16 of 276 patients (5.8%; 95% CI, 3.04%-8.55%). The proportion of people with myopia in Hubei province, based on a previous study, was 31.5%, which was much higher than the proportion of patients with COVID-19 who had myopia in this sample.</p><h3>Conclusions and Relevance</h3><p>In this cohort study of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 in Suizhou, China, the proportion of inpatients with COVID-19 who wore glasses for extended daily periods (>8 h/d) was smaller than that in the general population, suggesting that daily wearers of eyeglasses may be less susceptible to COVID-19.</p>

Abstract:<span><strong>Background:</strong> Since the outbreak of COVID-19, physical and psychological harm has been spreading across the global population alongside the spread of the virus. Currently, the novel coronavirus has spread to most countries in the world, and its impact on the public is also increasing. As a high-risk group in direct contact with the virus, medical workers should be monitored, and their mental health deserves extensive attention. The aim of this study was to explore the mental health of medical workers facing the novel coronavirus and the main factors affecting it.<strong>Methods</strong>: The present cross-sectional study including 2,100 eligible individuals from 1,050 hospitals in China was conducted through the network platform powered by <a href="http://www.wjx.cn">www.wjx.cn</a>, a platform providing functions equivalent to Amazon Mechanical Turk. We used a self-designed questionnaire to collect demographic information and data on mental states, including gender, age (years), educational level, job rank, body and mind reaction, cognition of risk, and the judgment of the epidemic situation. Independent samples <i>t</i>-tests and one-way (ANOVA) analysis were carried out to compare the differences in the mental reactions according to the demographic and psychological states of the participants.<strong>Results</strong>: There were 502 males (23.9%) and 1,598 females (76.1%). The participants reported feeling calm (39.1%), tense (63.0%), scared (31.4%), angry (18.8%), sad (49.0%), afraid (34.7%), optimistic (5.1%), impressed (65.0%), and confident (31.1%) during the epidemic. At the same time, the psychological stress responses of medical staff were significantly different according to the levels of exposure in their environments, duration and personal experience.<strong>Conclusions</strong>: Prolonged exposure to the virus and intense work are detrimental to the mental health of medical care personnel. It is necessary to adjust work conditions and intensity according to workers' mental state flexibly and systematically.</span>

Ocular manifestations and clinical characteristics of 534 cases of COVID-19 in China: A cross-sectional study

Abstract:Abstract Objective The novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) was first reported in Wuhan, China in December 2019 and is now pandemic all over the world. Previous study has reported several COVID-19 cases with conjunctivitis. However, the complete profiling of COVID-19 related ocular symptoms and diseases are still missing. We aim to investigate the ocular manifestations and clinical characteristics of COVID-19 patients. Methods A total of five hundred and thirty-four patients were recruited at Mobile Cabin Hospital and Tongji Hospital. We collected information on demographic characteristics, exposure history, ocular symptoms, systemic concomitant symptoms, eye drop medication, eye protections, radiologic findings, and SARS-CoV-2 detection in nasopharyngeal swabs by RT-PCR from questionnaires and electronic medical records. Results The median age of patients was 40 and 50 years at Mobile Cabin Hospital and Tongji Hospital, respectively. Of 534 COVID-19 patients, 25 patients (4.68%) presented with conjunctival congestion and 3 patients had conjunctival congestion as the initial symptom. The average duration of conjunctival congestion was 4.9 ± 2.6 days (mean [SD]), ranging from 2 to 10 days. Dry eye (112, 20.97%), blurred vision (68, 12.73%), and foreign body sensation (63, 11.80%) ranked as the top three COVID-19 related ocular symptoms. Notably, a total of 332 COVID-19 patients (62%) had a hand-eye contact history. We also found that some COVID-19 patients had a history of eye disease, including conjunctivitis (33, 6.18%), dry eye (24, 4.49%), keratitis (14, 2.62%), cataract (9, 1.69%), and diabetic retinopathy (5, 0.94%). In consistent with previous studies, the most common clinical symptoms were fever, cough, and fatigue. Patients, 60.5% in Mobile Cabin Hospital and 67.5% in Tongji Hospital, respectively were confirmed with positive SARS-CoV-2 detection. Conclusions Conjunctival congestion was one of the COVID-19 related ocular symptoms, which may have clinical diagnostic significance. It is essential to provide eye-care equipment and strengthen education on eye protection, as dirty hand-eye contact might be a high risk factor of COVID-19. Further detailed and comprehensive ophthalmological guidance is needed for COVID-19 control.
Dry eye symptoms and health-related quality of life among Chinese individuals: a national-based study

Abstract:Aims To assess the impact of dry eye symptoms (DESs) on health-related quality of life (HRQOL) among Chinese residents. Methods A total of 21 916 participants were involved in this nationwide cross-sectional study. All of them completed the Ocular Surface Disease Index-6 and the five-level European Quality of Life 5-Dimensional (EQ-5D) Questionnaire to assess the severity of DES and HRQOL, respectively. Multiple linear regression models were used to explore the associations of DES with EQ-5D health utility score (HUS) and visual analogue scale (VAS) score. We used logistic regression models to assess the relationships between DES and self-reported problems in the EQ-5D dimensions. Results Overall, 43.6% of participants reported DESs. Of them, 2511 (11.5%) were with mild symptoms, 2762 (12.6%) were with moderate symptoms and 4288 (19.6%) were with severe symptoms. Both EQ-5D HUS and VAS score were significantly negatively associated with the severity of DES. The difference in HUS between patients with no symptoms and severe symptoms (0.085) was larger than the minimally clinical important difference for EQ-5D. The loss in HRQOL was greater for patients with severe DES than those just with other comorbidities. Participants with DES had a significantly higher risk of reporting problems in all five EQ-5D dimensions, especially in pain/discomfort and anxiety/depression for patients with mild or moderate symptoms and in mobility, self-care and usual activities for severe patients. Conclusion Patients with more severe DES tend to have lower HRQOL. Effective interventions targeted at different HRQOL dimensions should be taken according to the severity of DES.
