Abstract:A facile one-step microwave-assisted method was proposed for kaolinite intercalation and grafting. The structure, morphology, composition, and size distribution of kaolinite sheets were investigated using various methods, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric (TG) analysis. The potential application of the modified kaolinite as an oil/water emulsion stabilizer was studied. The results verified that intact kaolinite sheets were obtained. The dodecane/water emulsion stabilized by the modified kaolinite remained stable for more than 60 days. The effective performance suggests that the effectiveness of the proposed kaolinite modification method may be useful for Pickering emulsion stabilization in oil recovery applications.

Abstract:Investigating the sedimentation of clay in saline water was extensively studied because of its wide applications in engineering. This study investigated the impact of cation valence, ionic concentration, and water content on sedimentation behavior of kaolinitic and illitic clays through batch sedimentation tests for the comprehensive understanding of clay particle association and elapsed time for the transition of settling regimes from initial hindered settling to zone settling. The quantitative representation of observed settling curves was achieved using four fitted parameters in batch sedimentation model, which represented the shape of settling curves and the boundary of the initial hindered, zone, and consolidation settling regimes. In addition, the obtained settling velocity from the settling curves provided the fraction of clay particles and the size of clay flocs. The observed settling curves, trends of fitted parameters, and the estimated size of clay flocs shown in this study implied that the type of clay particle association (face-to-face aggregation or edge-to-face flocculation), settling velocity, final interface height, and boundary between initial hindered and zone settling are function of clay mineralogy, water content, cation valence, and ionic concentration.

Abstract:In mineral processing operations, it is essential to effectively remove the fine particles in slime and tailings slurry with appropriate methods. In this study, a unique two-stage flocculation scheme was developed for achieving effective separation of fine kaolinite particles from water by polyacrylamide. The slurry turbidity and flocculation kinetic parameters were used to characterize the effect of the dosing ratio between the first and second stage on the kaolinite flocculation behavior and settling rate. The results showed that the maximum kaolinite settling rate and the minimum turbidity of slurry supernatant was achieved when 60% and 40% polyacrylamide was added in the first and second stage, respectively. Focused beam reflectometer (FBRM) and particle video microscope (PVM) results showed that the flocs formed in the first stage of dosing were large in size but small in fractal dimension and no significant sedimentation was observed. The second stage of dosing produced large size of flocs with large fractal dimension, which settled fast in slurry. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) results showed that polyacrylamide was mainly adsorbed on the surface of kaolinite by hydrogen bonding and kaolinite particle flocculation was achieved by trapping and coiling of the polymer chain structure. The two-stage dosing process accomplished effective flocculation and rapid settlement of fine kaolinite particles. The findings from this study provide a feasible approach for mining companies to optimize the flocculation and sedimentation of fine particles.

Modeling the Process of Cohesive Sediment Settling and Flocculation Based on CFD–DEM Approach

Abstract:The settling process of cohesive sediment particles exists universally in nature and many engineering fields. Some of them have negative impacts, e.g., leading to the storage loss of reservoir, prolonging the duration of the reclamation project. Thus, understanding and quantifying cohesive sediments settling and flocculation processes are of great importance. In the present work, a three-dimensional model is applied to investigate the cohesive settling process numerically by computational fluid dynamics–discrete element method (CFD–DEM) approach. In the model, the cohesiveness of the sediment particle is modeled by implementing the van der Waals force. The simulation results are in good agreement with the experimental results, which demonstrate the ability of the current model to study the settling and flocculation process. For cohesive particles, the influence of polydispersity on structural density is discussed in two aspects: (a) the particle mean diameter d50 and (b) the geometric standard deviation d85/d15. Furthermore, the results show that the influence of these two parameters is more profound when a large Hamaker constant is applied. We also study the relationship between the maximum value of structural density and the Hamaker constant. The structure density is found to be significantly influenced by Hamaker constant when Hamaker constant is smaller than $2.0\, \times \,10^{ - 20} \,{\text{J}}$. Besides, for the poly-dispersed system, different from non-cohesive particles, the segregation phenomenon is not obvious for poly-dispersed cohesive particles due to the flocculation phenomenon. Moreover, the excessive pore pressure in sediment bed does not dissipate instantaneously as the non-cohesive sediment bed. And with the increase of the Hamaker constant, the excessive pore pressure dissipation velocity of the sediment bed decreases. In this work, we study the flocculation phenomenon of cohesive particles. It’s found that the influence of cohesive force is more significant on small particles. Since with the reduction of the particle size, the inertial force decreases to a greater extent compared to the cohesive force, the particles’ motion is mainly determined by the cohesive force.

Abstract:The pick-up, migration, deposition, and clogging behaviors of fine particles are ubiquitous in many engineering applications, including contaminant remediation. Deposition and clogging are detrimental to the efficiency of environmental remediation, and their mechanisms are yet to be elucidated. Two-dimensional microfluidic models were developed to simulate the pore structure of porous media with unified particle sizes in this study. Kaolin and bentonite suspensions were introduced to microfluidic chips to observe their particle deposition and clogging behaviors. Interactions between interparticle forces and particle velocity profiles were investigated via computational fluid dynamics and discrete element method simulations. The results showed that (1) only the velocity vector toward the micropillars and drag forces in the reverse direction were prone to deposition; (2) due to the negligible weight of particles, the Stokes number implied that inertia was not the controlling factor causing deposition; and (3) the salinity of the carrying fluid increased the bentonite deposition because of the shrinkage of the diffused electrical double layer and an increase in aggregation force, whereas it had little effect on kaolin deposition.
Distinct rheological behavior of kaolinite dispersions containing gas bubbles at different initial pore water pressures

Abstract:Discrete gas bubbles widely exist in the marine sediments, which are largely composed of kaolinite clay. They would evolve into kaolinite dispersions following submarine landslide, to impact and destroy seafloor infrastructures, such as oil/gas pipelines. The sliding distance and impact force are governed by the rheological behavior of the kaolinite dispersions, which are gas-dependent and remain poorly understood. In this study, effect of gas bubbles on the rheological behavior of a modeling clay sediment, a kaolinite dispersion, is investigated under both low and high initial pore water pressure. Results show that at the low initial pore water pressure, bubbles in the dispersion enhance the strength of the system, increasing both the viscosity and the yield stress. On the other hand, at the high initial pore water pressure, the presence of bubbles shows an opposite effect. Mechanisms on the bubble effect at both conditions are proposed, based on which a unified theoretical model predicting the yield stress of the gassy clay dispersion is developed.

Abstract:Coastal waste slurry has a negative impact on the environment due to its slow, natural settling characteristics. In this study, the organic, inorganic, and composite flocculants were applied to improve the mud-water separation performance. A series of experiments with sedimentation columns and particle size analysis were conducted to investigate the effects of flocculant type, dosage and combination on slurry settling rates and its associated mechanisms. The experimental results show that different types of flocculants varied in improving the settling efficiency of slurry, while the flocculation effect of inorganic flocculants is relatively poor. The settling efficiency of organic polymer flocculants on slurry is in order of anionic polyacrylamide (APAM) > cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) > nonionic polyacrylamide (PAM), with their optimal dosage 0.2%, 0.1%, and 0.1%, respectively. Moreover, the combination of APAM and Solid Polymeric Ferric Sulfate (SPFS) can further improve the efficiency of mud-water separation by enhancing electro-neutralization and net sweeping capability. Subsequently, the change in the particle size distribution of the slurry demonstrates that flocculation causes the aggregation of fine particles in slurry to form coarse particles. These findings have implications for improving the sedimentation characteristics of waste slurry to reduce environmental pollution.

A simple criterion and experiments for onset of flocculation in kaolin clay suspensions

Abstract:Cohesive effects between fine-grained sediment particles greatly influence their effective settling rate and erodibility. Many studies have observed a qualitative difference in settling dynamics between clays in freshwater, where particles remain dispersed, and in saltwater, where aggregates form and settle rapidly. The critical coagulation concentration (CCC) of salt that separates the two regimes however remains under-investigated, even though knowledge of the CCC is crucial to understanding aggregation in settings such as estuaries, where large salt concentration gradients occur. Furthermore, no simple criterion exists to predict the CCC for clay suspensions. In this study, systematic experiments are performed to determine the CCC, by measuring transmitted light intensity through clay suspensions. To investigate the effect of ion valence, sodium chloride (NaCl) and calcium chloride (CaCl$_2$) are used. For kaolin clay, the results show a CCC of 0.6mM NaCl ($\approx 0.04$ppt NaCl $=$ 0.04 PSU), and of 0.04mM CaCl$_2$ ($\approx 0.004$ppt CaCl$_2$). Because these salinities are lower than those commonly observed in nature, these findings indicate that kaolin clay should flocculate in nearly all natural aquatic environments. Furthermore, due to the fact that tap water often has salinities higher than this threshold, these results imply that great care is needed in experiments, especially in large facilities where using distilled water is not feasible. In addition, a simple criterion to estimate the CCC for a kaolin clay suspension is derived. This criterion predicts that flocculation occurs at extremely low salt concentrations and is approximately independent of clay concentration, in agreement with the experimental observations and consistent with experimental evidence from the literature.

Effect of Electrolytes on Interactions Between a Novel Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Polymer Flocculant and Kaolinite Particles

Abstract:A novel copolymer, Al(OH)3-poly[N-isopropylacrylamide-co-N-[3-(Dimethylamino)propyl]methacrylamide] polyacrylamide (Al(OH)3-p[NIPAM-co-PMADMA]) was synthesized and characterized. The flocculation behavior of fine kaolinite by the temperature-responsive copolymer in different electrolyte solutions was studied by settling tests, measurements of lower critical solution temperature (LCST) and dissipative quartz crystal microbalance (QCM-D). The solution salinity and the type of electrolytes were shown to play a critical role in controlling the interactions between the synthesized flocculants and kaolinite particles. The initial settling rate (ISR) of kaolinite suspension increased initially and then decreased with further increasing the electrolyte concentration of NaCl, CaCl2, NaH2PO4 or Na2CO3. At low electrolyte concentrations, the electrolyte addition increased the adsorption of polymer on kaolinite particles. The effect of electrolyte addition on kaolinite flocculation followed the trend of Na2CO3＞CaCl2＞NaH2PO4＞NaCl, which can be described by the classical DLVO theory. However, the higher concentration of electrolytes led to a weaker adsorption and more compressed conformations of Al(OH)3-p[NIPAM-co-PMADMA] chains on both silica and alumina surfaces which mimic two types of kaolinite basal planes. The salting-out effect was found to be an important reason for polymer phase transfer, which inhibited the flocculation performance at higher electrolyte concentrations.

Abstract:Flocculation has been widely employed in treatment of mineral tailings and water management. In this study, a chitosan-graft-poly(acrylamide-dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride) (Chi-g-P(AM-DMDAAC)) was synthesized in-house. The adsorption and interaction mechanisms of Chi-g-P(AM-DMDAAC) and an anionic polyacrylamide (APAM) in a two-step flocculation process of kaolinite were explored using settlement tests, zeta potential measurement, quartz crystal micro-balance with dissipation (QCM-D) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) technique. The type of primary flocculant was critical for the two-step flocculation process. The treatment of the kaolinite suspension using 1 mg/L of Chi-g-P(AM-DMDAAC) followed by adding 2 mg/L of APAM displayed more efficient flocculation performance. QCM-D results showed that three dissipative layers were assembled on model kaolinite surface after sequentially injecting 3.5 mg/L of Chi-g-P(AM-DMDAAC), 0.05 wt% kaolinite suspension and 2.5 mg/L of APAM. The above total adsorption amount (Delta f of -64.9 Hz) was much higher than that of using the two flocculants in reverse order (Delta f of -23.1 Hz). This result indicated that the adsorption layer of the positively charged Chi-g-P (AM-DMDAAC) on kaolinite surface provided active adsorption sites for APAM. Further AFM measurement confirmed that the average adhesion between the silicon tip adsorbed Chi-g-P(AM-DMDAAC) and model kaolinite surface in 2.5 mg/L APAM solution increased from 0.25 +/- 0.1 nN to 4.2 +/- 0.3 nN with the effective interaction range of 700 nm, which was stronger than that measured between a bare silicon tip and silica substrate in single-componentflocculant solutions. The highly efficient two-step flocculation process could be ascribed to the strong electrostatic attraction between the kaolinite and the oppositely charged Chi-g-P(AM-DMDAAC) and APAM. On The Kaolinite Floc Size At The Steady State Of Flocculation In A Turbulent Flow

Abstract:The flocculation of cohesive fine-grained sediment plays an important role in the transport characteristics of pollutants and nutrients absorbed on the surface of sediment in estuarine and coastal waters through the complex processes of sediment transport, deposition, resuspension and consolidation. Many laboratory experiments have been carried out to investigate the influence of different flow shear conditions on the floc size at the steady state of flocculation in the shear flow. Most of these experiments reported that the floc size decreases with increasing shear stresses and used a power law to express this dependence. In this study, we performed a Couette-flow experiment to measure the size of the kaolinite floc through sampling observation and an image analysis system at the steady state of flocculation under six flow shear conditions. The results show that the negative correlation of the floc size on the flow shear occurs only at high shear conditions, whereas at low shear conditions, the floc size increases with increasing turbulent shear stresses regardless of electrolyte conditions. Increasing electrolyte conditions and the initial particle concentration could lead to a larger steady-state floc size.
Settling Velocity And Fractality Of Exopolymer-Bearing Cohesive Sediments In Fresh And Salt Waters

Abstract:As the main constituents of cohesive sediments in natural waters, clay particles always interact with the waterborne extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) exuded by microorganisms, or exopolymers, resulting in fractal clay-EPS flocs and hence change in sediment transport. During the transition of cohesive sediments from fresh water to salt water in the estuarine areas, the clay-to-clay and clay-to-EPS interactions will be influenced by the salinity change and thus the alternation to sediment transport. This study investigated the influence of a neutral exopolymer, guar gum, on the size, settling velocity, and fractality of clay flocs in both fresh and sea waters. To account for the variety of different clay types in natural cohesive sediments, four clays, namely kaolinite, illite, Ca- and Na-montmorillonite, were used as the inorganic constituents of flocs. To simulate the water chemistry in coastal areas, fresh water and salt water with a salinity of 35 ppt were used. Experimental results showed that the neutral EPS increased the floc size by promoting flocculation. In fresh water, the floc size increased from similar to 0.1-60 mu m to as large as similar to 100 mu m. The settling velocity of clay-EPS flocs was smaller than pure clay particles of the same size in both fresh and salt water, which may be caused by the reduced density. Due to flocculation, more clay particles are attached to flocs and hence become settable. The fractal dimension of flocs, which was estimated based on a simple floc size-settling velocity model, ranges from 1.763-1.861 for pure clay flocculi, 1.387-1.473 for the clay-EPS flocs, 1.861-1.954 for clay flocculi in salt water, and 1.436-1.905 for clay-EPS flocs in salt water. Both the floc size and settling velocity in salt water are greater than that in fresh water. The increased ion concentration also promotes the flocculation of clay particles and clay-EPS flocs by reducing the double layer thickness and cation bridging, which lead to an increase in floc density and fractal dimension.

Abstract:Based on the large deformation consolidation equation of Gibson,regarding the void ratio as control variable,the settlement formula of soil particles in steady water was derived on the assumption that the effective stress was zero during the settling process in the Eulerian coordinate.According to the characteristic equation of the settlement formula,the decline formula of the interface between suspension and water and the formula of void ratio of deposition layer were also obtained,then the shock-wave theory was used to explain the phenomena.Analysis shows that the void ratio of the suspension is constant while the density and void ratio of the deposition layer change in the form of shock wave with the depth before the suspension-water interface meets with the deposition layer-suspension interface.The void ratio formula deduced by the characteristic equation method can explain the mixture settlement process.Comparisons of the distributions of density and void ratio in the deposition layer with the existing test results obtained satisfied results.
Effects of water chemistry on microfabric and micromechanical properties evolution of coastal sediment: A centrifugal model study

Abstract:Water chemistry alteration induced strength weakening of natural sediment, which leads to the differential settlement of infrastructures in coastal areas, has caused numerous disasters and engineering failures. To thoroughly understand the underlying mechanisms of how water chemistry influences the microfabric and mechanical properties evolution of coastal sediments, herein, the authors adopted centrifuge test, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and atomic force microscope (AFM) to quantitatively study the structure anisotropy index (i.e., orientation index (OI)), micromorphological property (i.e., root mean square height ( S q )), and micromechanics (i.e., microscale apparent modulus) of clay sediments in different water chemistry conditions and gravity gradients. The results show that the change rule of OI is: OI saline > OI alkaline > OI water > OI acid , along the vertical sedimentary depth. Randomly distributed clay flocs and loose flocculated soil skeleton (mainly consisted by edge-to-face (EF) and edge-to-edge (EE) contact of the kaolinite platelets) are associated with the acidic water chemical conditions. The action of supergravity and face-to-face (FF) repulsive contact mode lead to high degree of anisotropy of kaolinite sediments in alkaline environment. Clay platelets are compacted closely under the synergetic effect of centrifugal pressure and prevailing van der Waals attraction (reduction of electric double layer repulsion) in saline environment. The change of 1/ S q is highly consistent with the change of OI at different depths in different water chemical environments. Along the sedimentary depth (i.e., transition from the normal gravity (1 g) to supergravity (8000 g)), the microscale apparent modulus of kaolinite sediment was found to be the highest in alkaline environment. As the water chemistry changes from alkaline to acidic, however, the microscale apparent modulus of kaolinite aggregate decreased, and it showed the smallest in the saline environment.

Abstract:The consolidation of clay is the main measure for reclamation project, which is related to the compressibility, permeability, and coupling effect of clay-water. However, the mechanism of consolidation of clay remains unclear. This study focuses on the microscopic consolidation property of kaolinite using Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulation method. The nano-scale consolidation model was established to reproduce the sedimentation to consolidation. According to the different distribution of water film in pores, the consolidation process could be divided into different stages: (1) in the process of sedimentation and primary consolidation, the drainage occurred continuously except the strongly bound water; (2) just a part of the strongly bound water could be drained during the secondary consolidation. The minimum consolidation stress which can cause significant consolidation was found to be 0.1 GPa in a narrow throat of about 1 nm at nano-scale. The evolution of interparticle spacing between kaolinite particles during the consolidation process was analyzed to reflect the role of interparticle water on the pore water pressure and effective stress. Besides, models with different wettability show that the drainage of water on hydrophilic basal surface was difficult, while water molecules on hydrophobic basal surface are more easily expelled and have directional flow paths.

Abstract:Diffusion of pollutants in the earth's strata threatens both the environment and human health. The clay soil microstructure that plays a crucial role in the diffusion of pollutants is significantly influenced by the pore water chemistry. However, there is still a lack of quantitative evaluation of pore water chemistry on clay fabric evolution. To bring new insights, we systematically examined the impact of water chemistry (mainly refers to salt ion concentration and pH) on the self-assembly form (fabric) of kaolin platelets and evaluated the fabric quantitatively. The results show that as the salt ion concentration increases, the "kaolin book" structure is formed, which can be captured by the (001) and (020) pole figures. Under acidic conditions, kaolin platelets turn randomly arranged; however, with the increase of pH, the edge-to-face (EF) microstructure of kaolin platelets gradually changes to a face-to-face (FF) structure. Under alkali-eq conditions, kaolin platelets form a dispersion assembly dominated by FF repulsion. However, the strong alkaline condition triggers the decomposition of kaolin, leading to a notable decrease in the maximum pole density. The conclusions were substantiated through insightful AFM tests. Moreover, we addressed the advantages and limitations of 1DXRD and 2DXRD by analyzing the trend between the OI and pole density, with 2DXRD being favored for its accuracy. Overall, this study provides insights into clay platelets and the self-assembly of kaolin under different water chemistry conditions, which have significant implications for predicting and modeling the physical properties of clay under special environmental conditions.
Flocculation and dewatering of the Kaolin slurry treated by single- and dual-polymer flocculants

Abstract:To mitigate the sudden increase in the production of waste engineering slurry, predominantly composed of Kaolinite, this study investigated the flocculation and dewatering of Kaolin slurry treated with single- and dual-polymer flocculants. The influence of the flocculant type and dosage, under single- and dual-dose conditions, on slurry's sedimentation and the filtration characteristics, were thoroughly discussed. The results reveal that the adsorption bridging of the polymeric flocculant, resulting from hydrogen bonds, exerts a more significant effect than electrical neutralization on forming a large floc. Under single-dose conditions, nonionic polyacrylamides (NPAMs) with the strongest adsorption bridging leads to biggest flocs and the maximum settling rate of 21.55 mm/s. Under the dual-dose conditions of polymeric aluminium chloride (PAC) and PAM, the size of the slurry's floc decreases with an increase in PAC dosage. Nevertheless, the filtration performance of the slurry improves, with the lowest SRF value of the flocculated slurry being 1.58 × 1011 m/kg as 3‰ PAC and 3‰ NPAM is dosed. The improvement is explained by the micro-pore distribution of sludge. According to Mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) test, the slurry treated with the optimal dosage of dual-polymer flocculant exhibits the greatest sludge pore size and connected porosity (with a maximum value of 20.99%). Furthermore, the study discusses and compares the flocculation mechanism of single- and dual-polymer flocculants. The obtained results provide guidance for selecting appropriate flocculants for dewatering inorganic slurries, using different dewatering methods, such as gravitational thickening or filter pressing.
A New Method for Calculation of Flocculation Kinetics Combining Smoluchowski Model with Fractal Theory

Abstract:In this study, the widely applied modified Smoluchowski model of flocculation kinetics based on the existence of two simultaneous processes, namely aggregation and breakup, is further developed by combining it with the fractal theory. The floc properties including the floc size and fractal dimension are extracted using online data acquisition through light scattering technique and combined into the model. The new method has been carefully examined by three flocculation systems using kaolin suspension as synthetic water and different typical flocculants. The theoretic flocculation kinetic curves are in good agreement with the experimental data with the determination coefficients larger than 0.9 by nonlinear regression. Moreover, the flocculation kinetic characteristics of different flocculation systems under various conditions are discussed based on the kinetic rates calculated from the modified model in detail. In summary, the new method for calculation of flocculation kinetics is more universal and simpler to operate, and is expected to be a useful tool in real water treatment operations. Abstract:Thickening technology is one of the key points of tailings cemented filling mining. Taking the tailings slurry of Anshan Iron and Steel Group Corporation as the object of study, this paper carries out experimental study on the regulation of tailings intermittent sedimentation, according to whose result the particle sedimentation can be divided into four stages: acceleration, quasi uniform velocity, deceleration, and quasi quiescent, which reveals the relationship between sedimentation velocity and influence factor. According to the test, this paper gives a concept of homotactic sedimentation velocity, that is, taking the velocity from beginning to the sediment height reaching 80% of the total to get the average velocity as the sedimentation velocity, and then carrying out orthogonal experiment and range analysis to discuss the relationship between homotactic sedimentation velocity and slurry quality concentration, and flocculant unit consumption, and flocculant solution concentration. The result shows that the impact on the sedimentation velocity according to significance can be arranged as slurry quality concentration >flocculant unit consumption >flocculant solution concentration; finally, a BP neural network model is formed to analyze the effect on sedimentation velocity of flocculant unit consumption under different concentrations. The results show that there is an optimum dosage of flocculant corresponding to different concentrations of tailings mortar. When the concentration is too low or too high, the flocculation effect is not significant. For Anshan Iron and Steel Group Corporation's tailings mortar flocculation, the best slurry quality concentration is 20%, and the most suitable dosage of flocculant is 42 similar to 46g/t, while the sedimentation velocity can exceed 20cm/min.

Abstract:Aggregation is an economical and widely existing method to in fine particles dewatering, but the mechanism of composite applications of inorganic coagulants/flocculants remains unclear. In this work, the aggregation process of kaolin particles using Fe(III) and xanthan gum (XG) was investigated by settling testing. The results shows that the combination XG and Fe(III) was effective in the flocculation of kaolin, which due to the self-assembly multilayers built onto the surface of kaolin. Further, density functional theory (DFT) calculations and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses were performed to detect the flocculation mechanism. It was found that [Fe(Ⅲ)(OH)]2+, [Fe(Ⅲ)(H2O)6]3+ and [Fe(Ⅲ)(OH)2]+ were the dominant species, which could complex with the XG on kaolin surface by the Fe-O adsorption site. However, the precipitate Fe(OH)3(s) covered on the kaolin surface is difficult to combine XG by coordination reaction under alkaline conditions. The research elucidated a new insight into of composite applications of inorganic coagulants and flocculants which could expand our knowledge of aggregation process, further define the relationship between coagulation and flocculation for enhancing colloidal particle settling in practical application.
