Abstract:It is of great importance in telemedicine to protect authenticity and integrity of medical images. They are mainly addressed by two technologies, which are region of interest (ROI) lossless watermarking and reversible watermarking. However, the former causes biases on diagnosis by distorting region of none interest (RONI) and introduces security risks by segmenting image spatially for watermark embedding. The latter fails to provide reliable recovery function for the tampered areas when protecting image integrity. To address these issues, a novel robust reversible watermarking scheme is proposed in this paper. In our scheme, a reversible watermarking method is designed based on recursive dither modulation (RDM) to avoid biases on diagnosis. In addition, RDM is combined with Slantlet transform and singular value decomposition to provide a reliable solution for protecting image authenticity. Moreover, ROI and RONI are divided for watermark generation to design an effective recovery function under limited embedding capacity. Finally, watermarks are embedded into whole medical images to avoid the risks caused by segmenting image spatially. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed lossless scheme not only has remarkable imperceptibility and sufficient robustness but also provides reliable authentication, tamper detection, localization, and recovery functions, which outperforms existing schemes for protecting medical images.

Abstract:Digital medical images contain important information regarding patient’s health and very useful for diagnosis. Even a small change in medical images (especially in the region of interest (ROI)) can mislead the doctors/practitioners for deciding further treatment. Therefore, the protection of the images against intentional/unintentional tampering, forgery, filtering, compression and other common signal processing attacks are mandatory. This manuscript presents a multipurpose medical image watermarking scheme to offer copyright/ownership protection, tamper detection/localization (for ROI (region of interest) and different segments of RONI (region of non-interest)), and self-recovery of the ROI with 100% reversibility. Initially, the recovery information of the host image’s ROI is compressed using LZW (Lempel-Ziv-Welch) algorithm. Afterwards, the robust watermark is embedded into the host image using a transform domain based embedding mechanism. Further, the 256-bit hash keys are generated using SHA-256 algorithm for the ROI and eight RONI regions (i.e. RONI-1 to RONI-8) of the robust watermarked image. The compressed recovery data and hash keys are combined and then embedded into the segmented RONI region of the robust watermarked image using an LSB replacement based fragile watermarking approach. Experimental results show high imperceptibility, high robustness, perfect tamper detection, significant tamper localization, and perfect recovery of the ROI (100% reversibility). The scheme doesn’t need original host or watermark information for the extraction process due to the blind nature. The relative analysis demonstrates the superiority of the proposed scheme over existing schemes.

Abstract:The exchange of medical images and patient data over the internet has attracted considerable attention in the past decade, driven by advancements in communication and health services. However, transferring confidential data through insecure channels, such as the internet, exposes it to potential manipulations and attacks. To ensure the authenticity of medical images while concealing patient data within them, this paper introduces a high-capacity and reversible fragile watermarking model in which an authentication watermark is initially generated from the cover image and merged with the patient's information, photo, and medical report to form the global watermark. This watermark is subsequently encrypted using the chaotic Chen system technique, enhancing the model's security and ensuring patient data confidentiality. The cover image then undergoes a Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) and the encrypted watermark is inserted into the frequency coefficients using a new embedding technique. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves great watermarked image quality, with a PSNR exceeding 113 dB and an SSIM close to 1, while maintaining a high embedding capacity of 3 BPP (Bits Per Pixel) and offering perfect reversibility. Furthermore, the proposed model demonstrates high sensitivity to attacks, successfully detecting tampering in all 18 tested attacks, and achieves nearly perfect watermark extraction accuracy, with a Bit Error Rate (BER) of 0.0004%. This high watermark extraction accuracy is crucial in our situation where patient data need to be retrieved from the watermarked images with almost no alteration.

Abstract:As the world becomes increasingly digital, healthcare is no exception. With the ease of sharing e-healthcare records over open networks, smart healthcare systems have become a popular way to manage patient information. But as the popularity of these systems has grown, so has the concern for their security. That's where image security techniques come in. In this paper we have developed a new approach to secure e-patient records like DICOM images. By combining the redundant discrete wavelets transform (RDWT), Hessenberg Decomposition (HD), and randomized singular value decomposition (RSVD). We developed a robust and dual watermarking scheme. This scheme uses multiple watermarks, including Electronic Patient Record (EPR) as text and images, to ensure high-level authentication. In order to attain a balance between imperceptibility and robustness, a PSO-based optimization of scale factor is employed and Turbo code is utilized to encode the EPR and minimize channel noise. Additionally, the marked image undergoes encryption using a 3D chaotic-based encryption technique, and the extracted watermark is denoised through a deep neural network. The result shows that the proposed scheme is both secure and reliable. With this dual watermarking scheme, we have made great strides in securing e-patient records.

Abstract:Telemedicine is a technology-based substitute for conventional health care facilities. It symbolizes the practice of medication via indirect means. The foremost requirement for such remote healthcare practices is the communication of highly sensitive data over insecure networks, which demands very high protection of different types of health-related information such as Electronic Patient Record (EPR) and Related Medical images. Consequently, there is a stern need to develop algorithms to secure all confidential information for overall well being. This paper is an effort to propose one multilayer protection mechanism, which not only secures the patient's transcript but also protects associated medical Images. EPR is embedded in the original medical image resulting in a watermarked medical image, which is further hidden in the reference image. But these two relevant records are given multiple strata of security before concealing and exposed to the insecure channel. Compression and Quantum Encryption of EPR are done, which is then embed into LWT transformed Medical Image, followed by scrambling and compression of all the planes of a watermarked medical image before embedding in different bands of LWT (Lifting Wavelet Transform), transformed reference image. This stride of hiding image is mandatory because original and watermarked medical images are very similar, thus prone to attacks. In order to avoid this, an image steganography technique is used to change the watermarked medical image's visual structure, which is also referred to as visually meaningful encryption, as popular encryption algorithms give noise-like textures that can attract attackers. For authentication on the accession of records, biometric-based detection along with hash algorithm is also incorporated. Overall results (implemented using MATLAB) show that the proposed mechanism provides a highly secure and authentic medical healthcare system.

Abstract:Image authentication techniques are crucial for a multitude of multimedia applications. When images are transmitted through non-secure channels like the internet, they are vulnerable to unauthorized alterations and manipulations. Therefore, it is essential in sensitive fields, like the medical industry, to employ image authentication techniques to guarantee the integrity and authenticity of transmitted images. In this paper, to address these security issues and to ensure the authenticity of medical images, we present a reversible fragile watermarking model where the watermark is first generated from the cover image using DCT and then encrypted by the Fibonacci Q-matrix technique, enhancing the model's security. Subsequently, DFT is performed on the host image and the obtained sub-band is segmented into 2 × 2 blocks, the watermark is then embedded within the frequency coefficients using a new embedding technique. Experimental results indicates that the presented model produces a great watermarked image quality, with a PSNR superior to 117 dB, while maintaining an acceptable embedding capacity of 0.25 BPP and high sensitivity to various attacks, as it was tested against 16 different attacks and could detect tampering in all of them. Furthermore, the presented scheme offers nearly perfect reversibility with a PSNR of 324 dB, which is very useful in the medical field where we need images with as little distortion as possible.

Abstract:Information contained in digital medical images is beneficial for patient's diagnosis. Medical Image Watermarking (MIW) provides precise patient identification and reduces the possibility of errors during diagnosis. A combination of Redundant Discrete Wavelet Transform (RDWT) and Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) is applied to host medical images. QR decomposition and Randomized Singular Value Decomposition (RSVD) techniques are used to embed a logo and text image. Chaotic logistic mapping is used to encrypt the watermarks before embedding in order to enhance security. The optimum value of the strength factor is obtained by using White Shark Optimization (WSO). The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated in terms of robustness, embedding capacity, imperceptibility and computational complexity. Performance comparison with existing schemes shows the superiority of the proposed scheme. The average percentage improvement of Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) is 29.34% and of Structural Similarity Index Measure (SSIM) is 2.11% compared to related schemes. Authentication is performed by utilizing Binary Robust Invariant Scalable Keypoints (BRISK) and Maximally Stable Extremal Regions (MSER) feature detectors. Important features of watermarked images are preserved even after applying several attacks and both the feature detectors successfully extract these features from attacked watermarked images.

Abstract:The application of digital technology has brought a new transformation in the healthcare sector. Significantly, the operational efficiency between healthcare professionals and patients has dramatically improved. In E-healthcare, the Electronic Patient Information (EPI) often moves from one unit to another or among different clinical experts involved in the diagnosis. EPI includes a patient's medical history, diagnoses, laboratory results, treatment plans, medications, radiology images, etc. Although EPIs are accepted widely, the privacy and security of EPIs have been a primary concern nowadays. This article presents a method to protect and authenticate EPI by combining multi-watermarking and hashing techniques. In this work, the medical image is employed as the carrier of the other essential clinical information of the patient. The medical image is primarily split into Region of Interest (ROI) and Region of Non-interest (RONI). Integer Wavelet Transform (IWT) transforms the RONI component to select the embedding/hiding area for multiple watermarks. The patient information is embedded in the selected sub-bands of RONI. The ROI of medical images is vital to diagnosis, so only the RONI part is selected as an embedding area. The hash value of ROI is also embedded inside the sub-band of the RONI part to verify the tamper detection, and the hospital logo is taken as another watermark for authenticating EPI. The outcome of the experiments shows the perfect reversibility of the ROI part and robustness against various attacks, which is very important for proper diagnosis. Also, patient details and clinical information confidentiality are achieved efficiently.

Abstract:Digital augmentation of contemporary healthcare has directed the expansion of ICT-based systems. At this stage, a variety of telemedical support has been implemented to ensure the provision of medical utilities. Data Privacy, reliability, and credibility are the three security prerequisites that demand constant monitoring and corrective measures. Watermarking and cryptographic techniques offer a potentially viable solution for effectively addressing the aforementioned challenges. This article presents a robust and secure watermarking procedure that effectively safeguards the privacy and accuracy of digital medical data. This work uses a hybridization of NSST and DTCWT to implement a multimodality image fusion method that generates the watermark image. Further, a combination of three transforms namely, NSST, BEMD, and MSVD is used to conceal the generated mark in the carrier image. Also, the weighting factor is computed using HOG-based optimization to achieve a balance between visual quality and robustness. Finally, the marked carrier image is encrypted with a suitable encryption technique for better security. The proposed framework's versatility, embedding capacity, robustness, and imperceptibility are evaluated, with the results justifying its efficacy. The study demonstrates a significant improvement of 47.65 % over the baseline, thus highlighting the framework's superiority.

Abstract:Purpose: Over the past decade, the diagnostic information of the patients are digitally recorded and transferred. During the transmission of patients data, the security and authenticity of the information has to be ensured. Medical image watermarking technology has recently advanced because it can be used to conceal patient information while ensuring the authenticity. We propose a multiple watermarking method for securing clinical medical images. Approach: In this watermarking method, the quality feature property and private label property information are embedded as watermarks in the original image. Initially, medical images are divided into the region of interest (ROI) and non-interest region (NIR). Second, a two-level discrete wavelet transform (DWT) is applied to the ROI and the coefficients LL1 (LL2, LH2, HL2, HH2), LH1, HL1, and HH1 are generated. Watermarks are embedded using the DWT low-frequency sub-band (LL2) by quantizing the low-frequency coefficients. Next, the NIR is separated into non-overlapping 8×8 blocks, and a discrete cosine transform (DCT) is applied for each block. The DCT coefficients of each block are sorted using the zigzag transform. For embedding, eight intermediate frequency coefficients are used. Finally, the feature information is embedded in the ROI, and the tag information is embedded in the NIR. Results: The performance of the DWT-DCT watermarking method is calculated using the metrics of peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), structural similarity index measure, and mean square error. The proposed method obtained the better PSNR value of 45.76 dB. Conclusions: The proposed model works well for clinical medical images when compared with the existing techniques.

Abstract:With the rapid development of telemedicine technology, electronic medical records (EMR) are facing security issues such as illegal access, leakage and malicious tampering during the transmission of electronic patient information (EPI). In view of this, a high-capacity RDHEI based on adaptive pixel modulation and high bit-plane based redundancy matrix coding (HBP-RMC) is proposed to effectively achieve patient privacy protection by embedding private data such as electronic medical records and authentication information into encrypted medical images. Specifically, the carrier image is encrypted using designed block-level disruption and adaptive pixel-modulation to preserve pixel-correlation. This method provides the basis for high embedding rates while ensuring the overall security of the image. Next, an accurate block-level pixel prediction is proposed to make full use of the high correlation to generate considerable redundancy and in balance with high prediction accuracy. Then the proposed HBP-RMC is used to maximally convert the redundant information into the embeddable space and effectively limit the size of the auxiliary information. At the decoding end, users can realize separable image restoration and information extraction according to their own keys. The maximum ERs of our scheme on the BOWS-2 and BOSSbase datasets can reach 2.9332 bpp and 3.0249 bpp, respectively. Extensive experiments prove that our algorithm outperforms some existing state-of-the-art schemes.
Integer wavelet transform based watermarking scheme for medical image authentication

Abstract:In this work, a blind watermarking scheme has been proposed for medical image authentication. The scheme can embed patients’ records in digital format into a digital copy of a computerized scan. In this scheme, an Integer Wavelet Transform (IWT) is applied to the medical image prior to the embedding procedure. Here LH, HH, and HL sub-bands of the IWT are used for watermark embedding. To ensure the security of the scheme a SHA-512 hash algorithm is applied to the watermark, and the hash value is embedded within the digital copy of the scanned image to ensure the authenticity of the scanned copy. Depending on a shared secret key, the IWT coefficients are selected from random positions before embedding the watermark. The results show that the proposed scheme achieved 78.5 dB PSNR with an NCC value of 0.9805, and SSIM is near about 1 after embedding 65,280 bits of watermark information. The experimental outcomes are compared with some state-of-the-art schemes to show the superiority of the proposed scheme in terms of robustness and imperceptibility.

Abstract:In recent years, the healthcare sector has witnessed a profound impact from the increased utilization of digital images, particularly in the context of telemedicine applications. However, the safeguarding of these medical images has become imperative to ensure both their integrity and authenticity. The adoption of watermarking techniques has emerged as a pivotal strategy for enhancing security. Conventional deep learning-based watermarking models, despite their advantages, often fall short in achieving simultaneous blindness, robustness, and automated embedding and extraction. This paper aims to address these limitations by presenting novel methods for medical image watermarking that prioritize both authenticity and integrity. The proposed image watermarking process consists of two primary phases: embedding and extraction. Initially, the host image undergoes segmentation into non-overlapping blocks, with the Self Adaptive-based Beetle Swarm Optimization (SA-BSO) algorithm identifying optimal blocks based on entropy calculations. The objective is to minimize entropy, thereby enhancing image quality. The selected blocks are then transformed using the Modified Fast Discrete Curvelet Transform (MFDCuT) during the embedding phase. In this embedding process, a new key is generated by incorporating a block integrity bit through the trace of Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) along with the optimally chosen blocks. Moving to the extraction phase, the recovery of the message is contingent upon ensuring both authenticity and integrity. Verification of the key employed in the extraction process is crucial for establishing authenticity, while the block integrity bit is scrutinized to ensure the integrity of the proposed model. Experimental results affirm that the devised lossless scheme not only exhibits remarkable imperceptibility and robustness but also offers reliable authentication and integrity. The performance surpasses existing schemes, making it a formidable solution for the protection of medical images.

An Optimized Dual Image Watermarking Scheme based on Redundant DWT and Randomized SVD with Henon Mapping Encryption

Abstract:Imperceptibility, embedding capacity and robustness are basic requirements of an image watermarking algorithm. There is always a trade-off among these requirements. To achieve a balance between these three properties in an image watermarking scheme, this paper presents a high capacity and encrypted dual image watermarking in YCbCr color space. This scheme is based on redundant discrete wavelet transform (RDWT), randomized singular value decomposition (RSVD), Manta ray foraging optimization (MRFO) and Henon mapping. Further, MRFO is utilized to get the optimized strength factor for embedding the watermark into the cover image to achieve high robustness and imperceptibility along with desired capacity. The luminance component of cover image is used to embed the watermark as it contains the vital information. Performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated for various medical and non-medical images in terms of imperceptibility and robustness. Different quality metrics are utilized to assess the performance of scheme. Various attacks are applied to check the robustness of the proposed method. Imperceptibility and robustness along with embedding capacity and computational complexity comparison with existing techniques are also presented. The comparison of MRFO with particle swarm optimization (PSO) is also carried out. Peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) for all cover images is above 60 dB whereas Structural similarity index measure (SSIM) and Normalized correlation (NC) values are above 0.99 under no attacks. For non-medical images, the average percentage improvement in PSNR is 13.76% and in NC is 4.3% in comparison with other existing schemes. In case of medical images, average percentage improvement in PSNR is 41.35% and in NC is 0.62% when compared with related works. The proposed scheme is less computational complex in comparison with other existing schemes.

Abstract:Security and privacy are essential requirements, and their fulfillment is considered one of the most challenging tasks for healthcare organizations to manage patient data using electronic health records. Electronic health records (clinical notes, images, and documents) become more vulnerable to breaching patients’ privacy when shared with an external organization in the current arena of the internet of medical things (IoMT). Various watermarking techniques were introduced in the medical field to secure patients’ data. Most of the existing techniques focus on an image or document’s imperceptibility without considering the watermark(logo). In this research, a novel technique of watermarking is introduced, which supersedes the shortcomings of existing approaches. It guarantees the imperceptibility of the image/document and takes care of watermark(biometric), which is further passed through a process of recognition for claiming ownership. It extracts suitable frequencies from the transform domain using specialized filters to increase the robustness level. The extracted frequencies are modified by adding the biomedical information while considering the strength factor according to the human visual system. The watermarked frequencies are further decomposed through a singular value decomposition technique to increase payload capacity up to (256 × 256). Experimental results over a variety of medical and official images demonstrate the average peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR 54.43), and the normal correlation (N.C.) value is 1. PSNR and N.C. of the watermark were calculated after attacks. The proposed technique is working in real-time for embedding, extraction, and recognition of biometrics over the internet, and its uses can be realized in various platforms of IoMT technologies.

Abstract:Lately, medical service area has developed quickly with its own advantages and disadvantages. In this computerized time, giving exact determination in the carefully communicated clinical pictures is at more serious dangers. This paper presents the watermarking method for medical images that should resists for various kinds of attacks. Firstly, our method identifies the region of interest for extracting the high intensity energy levels in the medical image. Wavelet decomposition is done to the identified region in order to extract the sub-bands for embedding. Singular values obtained from SVD decomposition helps in identifies the matrix and singular values of the medical image. Finally, validation code is generated for authenticating the medical image from both sender and receiver side, in order to track any region of the image being tampered through intruders. Our proposed method shows better accuracy in testing the robustness of the image.

Abstract:With the expansion of IOTs and Wireless devices, data transmission has increased over the internet. Maintaining security during data transmission using invisible watermarks has become a focus and has captured the attention of numerous researchers. The three security necessities, privacy, integrity, and authenticity, call for close attention and remedial actions. In this respect, watermarking and cryptographic techniques are a probable way to handle the above-mentioned issues adequately. The paper presents a novel approach to watermarking using a combination of NSST, HD, and SVD transforms, which improves the robustness and security of the watermarked image. The method involves using a grayscale image as the watermark and embedding it in multiple cover images. The resulting images are transformed sequentially using NSST, HD, and SVD to obtain the final watermarked images. The authors also apply AES encryption to enhance security, which generates a hash subkey and authentication tag. The proposed methodology performs better than other watermarking techniques, with a maximum improvement of 47.81%. Overall, the proposed approach offers a more secure and robust solution for watermarking.

Abstract:The development of the Internet of Medical Things heavily relies on big data, and data security based on medical images has become a growing concern in society. Digital watermarking serves as a crucial technique for protecting and tracing medical image data copyright, as well as enabling forensic analysis. However, existing deep watermarking methods often neglect the protection of watermarks after extraction, leading to potential copyright disputes. To address this issue, this paper proposes SE-NDEND, a novel symmetric watermarking framework with neural network-based chaotic encryption for the Internet of Medical Things that significantly enhances the effectiveness and security of watermarking while maintaining robustness. Specifically, the SE-NDEND leverages neural networks to simulate chaotic systems and generate chaotic sequences, mitigating the complexity and high cost of implementing chaotic systems using hardware circuits. Moreover, we introduce a new noise layer with Moire ' distortion that interacts with the decoder, forming a symmetric network structure that bolsters the robustness of watermarking. Parameters are jointly trained and shared during the training process to counteract potential interference from the noise layer. Experimental results validate the effectiveness of SE-NDEND in enhancing copyright protection, traceability, and forensic capabilities, surpassing existing deep learning methods in terms of visual quality (with PSNR of 45.8492 dB and SSIM of 0.9874), security, and robustness. The proposed framework can find application in protecting medical image data in the Internet of Medical Things.
