Abstract:Background: The present study is designed to assess the effect of adding various doses of Spirulina platensis (SP) on broiler chicken growth performance, gut health, antioxidant biomarkers, cecal microbiota, histopathology, and immunohistochemistry of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS). 240 male Cobb 500 broiler chicks (1 day old) were placed into four groups (sixty birds/group), then each group was further divided into three replicates of 20 chickens each for 35 days. Birds were allocated as follows; the 1st group (G1), the control group, fed on basal diet, the 2nd group (G2): basal diet plus SP (0.1%), the 3rd group (G3): basal diet plus SP (0.3%), and the 4th group (G4): basal diet plus SP (0.5%). Results: Throughout the trial (d 1 to 35), SP fortification significantly increased body weight growth (BWG) and feed conversion rate (FCR) (P < 0.05). Bursa considerably increased among the immunological organs in the Spirulina-supplemented groups. Within SP-supplemented groups, there was a substantial increase in catalase activity, blood total antioxidant capacity, jejunal superoxide dismutase (SOD), and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) activity (P < 0.05). Fatty acid binding protein 2 (FABP2), one of the gut barrier health biomarkers, significantly increased in the SP-supplemented groups but the IL-1β gene did not significantly differ across the groups (P < 0.05). Different organs in the control group showed histopathological changes, while the SP-supplemented chicken showed fewer or no signs of these lesions. The control group had higher levels of iNOS expression in the gut than the SP-supplemented groups (p < 0.05). Cecal Lactobacillus count significantly elevated with increasing the rate of SP inclusion rate (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Supplementing broiler diets with SP, particularly at 0.5%, can improve productivity and profitability by promoting weight increase, feed utilization, antioxidant status, immunity, and gastrointestinal health.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: With the potential development of human pathogenic bacteria resistant to antibiotics, the use of antibiotics as growth promoter in poultry production was banned in different countries, and it has forced the poultry industry to consider 'Biologically safer' alternatives to antibiotics, among which the probiotics and microalgae can be mentioned.OBJECTIVE: Present study aimed to compare Spirulina platensis microalgae in combination with a native probiotic as an alternative to antibiotics.METHODS: 336 male broiler chicks were allotted into 7 treatments and 4 repetitions in a completely randomised design to evaluate chick's performance and immune response to different treatment based on indexes as feed intake, weight gain, feed conversion ratio, humoral immunity, carcass characteristics, thigh and breast pH, intestinal morphology and microbial population. European production efficiency coefficient was also reported.RESULTS: No significant difference was appeared in the pH of thigh and breast meat (p > 0.05). Supplementation of diets with SP0.3 revealed better villi height, villi length to crypt depth ratio and villi surface. With significant difference (p < 0.05), the highest and lowest colonies of Lactobacillus and E. coli were recorded for PR0.5 SP0.3 treatments.CONCLUSIONS: Supplementation of broilers diets either with probiotic prepared from the microorganism isolated of native birds (1 g/kg) or S. platensis (0.2 g/kg) alone and their combination (0.3 g/kg of S. platensis in combination with 0.5 g/kg of native probiotic) are promising and can be a good alternative to antibiotics, lead to progress of broiler's performance.

Nutraceuticals vs. antibiotic growth promoters: differential impacts on performance, meat quality, blood lipids, cecal microbiota, and organ histomorphology of broiler chicken

Abstract:The main goal of this study was to evaluate the effect of nutraceuticals vs. in-feed antibiotics on performance, blood lipids, antioxidant capacity, cecal microbiota, and organ histomorphology of broiler chickens. A total of 320 one-day-old male broiler chickens were distributed into 5 treatment groups with 8 replicates each. The control group was fed on a basal diet without any additives (NC); the antibiotic group was fed on a basal diet supplemented with 100 mg kg-1 avilamycin (PC); the algal group was fed on a basal diet supplemented with a mixture of Spirulina platensis and Chlorella vulgaris (1.5 g + 1.5 g/kg feed) (SP+CV); the essential oil group was fed with a basal diet containing 300 mg/kg feed rosemary oil (REO); and the probiotics group (a mixture of 1 × 1011 CFU/g Bacillus licheniformis, 1 × 1011 CFU/g Enterococcus facieum, 1 × 1010 CFU/g Lactobacillus acidophilus, and 2 × 108 CFU /g Saccharomyces cerevisiae) was fed with a basal diet supplemented with 0.05% probiotics (PRO). The experiment lasted for 35 d. A beneficial effect of SP+CV and PRO (P < 0.01) was noticed on final body weight, body weight gain, feed conversion ratio, and breast yield. The dietary supplementation with SP+CV, REO, and PRO increased (P < 0.001) broilers' cecal lactic acid bacteria count compared to the control. Lower cecal Clostridium perfringens and Coliform counts (P < 0.001) were noticed in chickens fed the PC and supplemental diets. Malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration was decreased, while glutathione peroxidase (GPx), superoxide dismutase, and catalase enzymes were increased in the breast and thigh meat (P < 0.001) of broiler chickens fed SP+CV, REO, and PRO diets. Dietary SP+CV, REO, and PRO supplementation decreased (P < 0.001) serum total lipids, cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein, and MDA, but increased serum high-density lipoprotein and GPx compared to PC and NC. No pathological lesions were noticed in the liver, kidney, or breast muscle among broilers. The SP+CV, REO, and PRO groups had greater (P < 0.001) intestinal villi height and crypt depth while lower goblet cell densities (P < 0.01) than the control. The present findings suggest that PRO and SP+CV, followed by REO could be suitable alternatives to in-feed antibiotics for enhancing the performance, health, and meat quality of broiler chickens.

Abstract:Algae, as a biological component of the environment, holds promise for the development of novel cuisines. This study aimed to appreciate the dietary Spirulina platensis ( SP ) impact on growth patterns and as an immune stimulant in broilers. SP -fed chicks at 0.5, 1, and 2 g/kg doses significantly improved hematological indices. Also, gas chromatography of fatty acid profile in broiler breast muscles exhibited greater elevation. Serum total proteins, albumin, and globulin levels significantly increased. ElISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) revealed elevated immunoglobin M, G, and leptin levels as mirrors for immunological response coordination. Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) exhibited depressed tumour necrosis factor-alpha gene expression (TNF-α) in ilial tissue. Gut's histopathology showed well-developed villi. In conclusion, Spirulina platensis in doses up to 2 g/kg enhances immunity, fatty acid profile, liver function, anti-inflammatory properties, and intestinal absorption of broilers, while doses up to 4 g/kg cause the opposite effect on previous parameters.

Abstract:This study examined the effects of dietary Spirulina (Arthrospira) platensis supplementation on growth performance, antioxidant enzyme activity, nutrient digestibility, cecal microflora, excreta noxious gas emission, organ weight and breast meat quality in broiler chickens. In total, 800 Ross 308 male broiler chickens (1-d-old) were randomly divided into 5 dietary treatments with 10 replicate cages (16 birds/replicate) per treatment for 5 wk. The dietary treatments were a control basal diet without Spirulina or with 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, or 1.0% Spirulina. Body weight gain, feed conversion, and/or European production efficiency index improved linearly with supplementation of Spirulina during d 8 to 21, 22 to 35, and overall d 1 to 35 (P < 0.05). Dietary Spirulina supplementation caused a significant increase in the serum enzyme activity of superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase (linear, P < 0.05). Apparent total tract digestibility of dry matter and nitrogen showed a linear increase in Spirulina supplementation (P < 0.05). Cecal Lactobacillus count linearly increased and excreta ammonia gas emission linearly decreased, as dietary Spirulina supplementation increased (P < 0.05). There were no significant effects on relative organ weight and breast meat quality of broilers fed with Spirulina diets; however, 7 d drip loss linearly decreased in treatment groups fed with Spirulina (P < 0.05). These results indicate that adding Spirulina to the diet of broilers can improve antioxidant enzyme activity, dry matter and nitrogen digestibility, cecal Lactobacillus population, excreta ammonia gas emission, and 7 d drip loss of breast meat. In addition, dietary inclusion of 1.0% Spirulina powder might provide a good alternative to improve broiler chicken production.
Indexing and retrieval of 3D articulated geometry models

Abstract:In this PhD research study, we focus on building a content-based search engine for 3D articulated geometry models. 3D models are essential components in nowadays graphic applications, and are widely used in the game, animation and movies production industry. With the increasing number of these models, a search engine not only provides an entrance to explore such a huge dataset, it also facilitates sharing and reusing among different users. In general, it reduces production costs and time to develop these 3D models. Though a lot of retrieval systems have been proposed in recent years, search engines for 3D articulated geometry models are still in their infancies. Among all the works that we have surveyed, reliability and efficiency are the two main issues that hinder the popularity of such systems. In this research, we have focused our attention mainly to address these two issues. We have discovered that most existing works design features and matching algorithms in order to reflect the intrinsic properties of these 3D models. For instance, to handle 3D articulated geometry models, it is common to extract skeletons and use graph matching algorithms to compute the similarity. However, since this kind of feature representation is complex, it leads to high complexity of the matching algorithms. As an example, sub-graph isomorphism can be NP-hard for model graph matching. Our solution is based on the understanding that skeletal matching seeks correspondences between the two comparing models. If we can define descriptive features, the correspondence problem can be solved by bag-based matching where fast algorithms are available. In the first part of the research, we propose a feature extraction algorithm to extract such descriptive features. We then convert the skeletal matching problems into bag-based matching. We further define metric similarity measure so as to support fast search. We demonstrate the advantages of this idea in our experiments. The improvement on precision is 12\% better at high recall. The indexing search of 3D model is 24 times faster than the state of the art if only the first relevant result is returned. However, improving the quality of descriptive features pays the price of high dimensionality. Curse of dimensionality is a notorious problem on large multimedia databases. The computation time scales exponentially as the dimension increases, and indexing techniques may not be useful in such situation. In the second part of the research, we focus ourselves on developing an embedding retrieval framework to solve the high dimensionality problem. We first argue that our proposed matching method projects 3D models on manifolds. We then use manifold learning technique to reduce dimensionality and maximize intra-class distances. We further propose a numerical method to sub-sample and fast search databases. To preserve retrieval accuracy using fewer landmark objects, we propose an alignment method which is also beneficial to existing works for fast search. The advantages of the retrieval framework are demonstrated in our experiments that it alleviates the problem of curse of dimensionality. It also improves the efficiency (3.4 times faster) and accuracy (30\% more accurate) of our matching algorithm proposed above. In the third part of the research, we also study a closely related area, 3D motions. 3D motions are captured by sticking sensor on human beings. These captured data are real human motions that are used to animate 3D articulated geometry models. Creating realistic 3D motions is an expensive and tedious task. Although 3D motions are very different from 3D articulated geometry models, we observe that existing works also suffer from the problem of temporal structure matching. This also leads to low efficiency in the matching algorithms. We apply the same idea of bag-based matching into the work of 3D motions. From our experiments, the proposed method has a 13\% improvement on precision at high recall and is 12 times faster than existing works. As a summary, we have developed algorithms for 3D articulated geometry models and 3D motions, covering feature extraction, feature matching, indexing and fast search methods. Through various experiments, our idea of converting restricted matching to bag-based matching improves matching efficiency and reliability. These have been shown in both 3D articulated geometry models and 3D motions. We have also connected 3D matching to the area of manifold learning. The embedding retrieval framework not only improves efficiency and accuracy, but has also opened a new area of research.

Abstract:The current study was conducted to assess the consequences of Spirulina platensis extract based on growth performance and immunological response of broiler chicks. There was a total of a hundred and Eighty-one-day-old chicks were assigned at random into three dietary groups undergoing treatment with three replicates of 20 each bird. Control group was given ration without additives. The second and third groups were supplemented with Spirulina platensis extract at doses of 30 and 50 gm./kg. of ration, respectively. Supplementation of broiler chicks with Spirulina platensis extract enhanced their growth performance represented by increasing final body weight, body weight gain, phagocytic activity, and phagocytic index while significantly decreased feed intake and food conversion ratio. Moreover, it increased serum levels of Ig-M, and Ig-G and obviously change in serum level of Insulin like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) but not lead to a significant change as compared to control. This study indicated that Spirulina platensis extract in ration enhanced the growth performance and immunological response of broiler chicks through increasing serum levels of immunoglobulins.
Influence of Different Levels of Astragalus Root Powder in Broiler Chick Diets on the Physiological and Biochemical Changes

Abstract:This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of Astragalus membranaceus root powder (AMRP) supplementation on growth performance, physiological and serum indices, antioxidant and immunity status, immune organ weights, serum mineral profile and carcass characteristics of broiler chicks. One hundred eighty one-week-old Cabb500 broilers were randomly divided into 4 groups with 3 replicates in each group with15 broiler chicks in each replicate. The experiment lasted for 5 weeks after start. The basal diets were supplemented with 0, 100, 200 and 300 mg AMRP /kg feed, respectively. The achieved results indicated that addition of AMRP to broiler diets had no significant effect on body weight and feed conversion but dressing weight and absolute immune organ weights were significantly increased for treated groups as compared to control group. Also, supplementation of AMRP to broiler diets had no significant impact on thermoregulation parameters except that respiration rate of group fed 300mg AMRP/kg diet (T4) which was significantly lower compared to the control group. The obtained results showed that addition of AMRP to broiler diets decreased significantly serum ALT, AST, AP, creatinine enzymes, (liver and kidney functions) and antioxidant and reduced the oxidation enzyme levels. Chicks treated with different levels of AMRP in diet showed significant increases in serum total protein, albumin, A/G ratio and immunoglobulin type G compared to untreated one, these results reflect the beneficial effect of AMRP to improve immunity status. While, values of serum total cholesterol and triglyceride for treated groups were significantly reduced compared to the control group. Treatment of broiler chicks with AMRP enhanced nutrients metabolism by increased the secretion of T3 and T4 hormones more than the control group. Moreover, incorporation of AMRP in broiler diets improved the absorption of serum minerals measured in this study. Finally, addition of AMRP is recommended to broiler diets up to 300mg/kg diet without any adverse effects.

[Familial idiopathic paroxysmal kinesigenic dyskinesia: its natural history and a descriptive study in three Spanish families].

Abstract:INTRODUCTION Paroxysmal kinesigenic dyskinesia (PKD) is a disorder that is characterised by brief episodes of involuntary movements triggered by other sudden movements. PATIENTS AND METHODS Here we describe the cases of nine patients from three unrelated families who had PKD in its familial idiopathic form. RESULTS The majority of the patients (77.7%) were males. The mean age at onset was 10.3 years. All the subjects presented sudden movements as factors that precipitated the crises, which lasted < 10 s in 88.8% of cases. Two thirds (66.6%) of the patients were treated with carbamazepine, phenytoin and valproic acid and all of them responded well. Spontaneous remission occurred in 62.5% of the patients over 20 years of age and in a further 25% there was a significant decrease in the number of crises. CONCLUSIONS In our sample the proportion of patients who presented spontaneous remission was greater than in that reported in previous studies. As in other series, we found positive responses to antiepileptic drugs other than carbamazepine.
Impact of high Spirulina diet, extruded or supplemented with enzymes, on blood cells, systemic metabolites, and hepatic lipid and mineral profiles of broiler chickens

Abstract:The impact of 15% dietary inclusion of Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis) in broiler chickens was explored, focusing on blood cellular components, systemic metabolites and hepatic lipid and mineral composition. From days 14 to 35 of age, 120 broiler chickens were divided and allocated into four dietary treatments: a standard corn and soybean meal-based diet (control), a 15% Spirulina diet, a 15% extruded Spirulina diet, and a 15% Spirulina diet super-dosed with an enzyme blend (0.20% porcine pancreatin plus 0.01% lysozyme). The haematological analysis revealed no significant deviations (p > 0.05) in blood cell counts across treatments, suggesting that high Spirulina inclusion maintains haematological balance. The systemic metabolic assessment indicated an enhanced antioxidant capacity in birds on Spirulina diets (p < 0.001), pointing toward a potential reduction in oxidative stress. However, the study noted a detrimental impact on growth performance metrics, such as final body weight and feed conversion ratio (both p < 0.001), in the Spirulina-fed treatments, with the super-dosed enzyme blend supplementation failing to alleviate these effects but with extrusion mitigating them. Regarding hepatic composition, birds on extruded Spirulina and enzyme-supplemented diets showed a notable increase in n-3 fatty acids (EPA, DPA, DHA) (p < 0.001), leading to an improved n-6/n-3 PUFA ratio (p < 0.001). Despite this positive shift, a reduction in total hepatic lipids (p = 0.003) was observed without a significant change in cholesterol levels. Our findings underscore the need for further exploration into the optimal inclusion levels, processing methods and potential enzymatic enhancements of Spirulina in broiler diets. Ultimately, this research aims to strike a balance between promoting health benefits and maintaining optimal growth performance in poultry nutrition.
Dietary Spirulina effects in Eimeria-challenged broiler chickens: growth performance, nutrient digestibility, intestinal morphology, serum biomarkers, and gene expression

Abstract:This study investigated the growth performance, nutrient utilization, and intestinal health responses of Eimeria-challenged broiler chickens to dietary Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis). On day 1, birds were assigned to 2 diets supplemented with Spirulina (0 or 5 g/kg) in a randomized complete block design. The birds within each diet were divided into 2 Eimeria-challenge groups (challenge or no-challenge) and that resulted in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement with 2 levels each of Spirulina and challenge on day 14. On day 15, the birds in the challenge or no-challenge groups were orally gavaged with a solution containing Eimeria oocysts or 1% PBS, respectively. Samples were collected on days 21 and 26 (6- and 11-d post-infection; dpi). Data collected from days 1 to 26 were analyzed using the MIXED procedure of SAS. Birds that were fed Spirulina-supplemented diets had increased (P < 0.05) BW gain, gain-to-feed ratio, and total tract retention nitrogen from days 14 to 21. The ileal villus perimeter and area, serum catalase, HMOX1 and SOD1 jejunal abundance were all increased (P < 0.05) in birds fed Spirulina-supplemented diets on day 21 (6 dpi). However, there was no effect on bone ash or oocyst count. From days 21 to 26, there was a tendency (P = 0.059) for a Spirulina × Challenge interaction on the BW gain of birds. Moreover, dietary Spirulina addition increased (P < 0.05) serum catalase, total antioxidant capacity, ileal villus perimeter, tibia bone ash, and the relative mRNA expression of HMOX1, SOD1, claudin 1, and TNFα in the jejunal mucosa of birds on day 26 (11 dpi). On both 6 and 11 dpi, the Eimeria challenge negatively (P < 0.05) impacted growth performance, gut morphology, and the relative mRNA expression of genes. Overall, assessing the impact of Spirulina in broilers revealed its positive antioxidant, immune-modulating, and health benefits. However, its dietary addition did not completely reverse the Eimeria-induced effects in these birds. Ultimately, this study outlines the positive properties of dietary Spirulina beyond its use in the diet of healthy broiler chickens.
Analysing the Impact of Spirulina Intake Levels on Performance Parameters, Blood Health Markers and Carcass Traits of Broiler Chickens

Abstract:This systematic review examines the impact of varying Spirulina (Limnospira platensis) intake levels on broiler chickens, focusing on growth performance, blood health markers and carcass traits. The data revealed cumulative Spirulina intakes from 3.13 g to 521 g per bird (total feed consumed multiplied by its proportion in the diet) establish a cubic relationship between dosage and growth outcomes. Initial benefits peak and diminish with increased intake, with the optimal threshold for growth performance identified at 45 g per bird. Lower intakes between 14 g and 29 g per bird enhance blood health markers, improving lipid profiles and antioxidant capacity. Similarly, cumulative intakes of 14 g to 37 g per bird optimise meat quality, resulting in better dressing percentages, breast and thigh yields and meat tenderness while minimizing undesirable traits like abdominal fat and cooking loss. These findings underscore the importance of precisely calibrated Spirulina supplementation strategies to maximise growth, health and meat quality benefits while avoiding adverse effects at higher doses. Future research should focus on identifying optimal dosage and duration, assessing long-term implications, elucidating mechanisms of action and ensuring safety and regulatory compliance. Comparative studies with other feed additives could further establish Spirulina's effectiveness and economic viability in poultry production.
Chromatographic system based on amorphous silicon photodiodes

Abstract:In this work, we present a novel thin layer chromatography system based on fluorescence detection by means of a linear array of amorphous silicon photodiodes. The photodiodes are optically coupled to a thin layer chromatography plate to monitor, in real-time, the separation of the components of a mixture during the chromatographic run. We designed a horizontal development chamber with UV transparent window and integrated eluent tank. The resulting system is extremely compact and ensures fast analysis using only small amounts of eluent. With our system, we analyzed different mixtures of fluorescent inks and other molecules such as fluorescein. Real-time data of sensors located in different position are used to detect the composition of the mixture. The various components can be determined from the time of the transit of the different species in front of the sensors. Furthermore, from the measured data it is possible to extract additional information as the transport properties of the stationary phase or the velocity profile along the run for each component of the mixture.
Differentiation of Adrenal Hyperplasia From Adenoma by Use of CT Densitometry and Percentage Washout.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to quantitatively differentiate adrenal hyperplasia from adenoma with the use of adrenal CT protocols. MATERIALS AND METHODS Between January 2004 and November 2012, a total of 156 patients (69 men and 87 women; mean age, 48.9 years) underwent unenhanced CT, early contrast-enhanced CT, and delayed contrast-enhanced CT before undergoing adrenalectomy. Of these patients, 142 had 144 adenomas and 14 had nodular (n = 12) or diffuse (n = 2) hyperplasia. An ROI was placed on 144 adenomas and 27 hyperplastic nodules that were 1 cm or larger or on the four thickest areas of both adrenal glands. The number of each type of lesion and the attenuation value, absolute percentage washout (APW), and relative percentage washout (RPW) associated with hyperplasia and adenoma were compared. The reference standard was pathologic examination. A mixed model and the Fisher exact test were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS On unenhanced CT, the mean (± SD) attenuation value for hyperplasia and adenoma was 18.8 ± 10.8 HU and 13.7 ± 15.6 HU, respectively (p = 0.375). When a threshold of 10 HU or lower was used, 22.6% of hyperplastic lesions (7/31) were misdiagnosed as adenomas. The mean APW associated with hyperplasia and adenoma was 73.7% ± 9.3% and 67.3% ± 26.2%, respectively (p = 0.449), whereas the mean RPW for hyperplasia and adenoma was 61.2% ± 9.2% and 59.9% ± 23.0%, respectively (p = 0.625). When an APW threshold of 60% or higher or an RPW threshold of 40% or higher was used, 100% of hyperplastic lesions (31/31) were misdiagnosed as adenoma. Three or more nodules were detected in 33.3% of patients with nodular hyperplasia (4/12) but in none of the patients with adenoma (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION Adrenal hyperplasia cannot be quantitatively differentiated from adenoma because there is significant overlap in findings from CT densitometry and assessment of percentage washout. However, the presence of three or more nodules increases the likelihood of nodular hyperplasia.

Abstract:ABSTRACT: Over a 2.8-year period, I did 112 vaginal hysterectomies using five different techniques of cuff closure to examine the preservation of vaginal length associated with each closure. I conclude that all five methods are acceptable as long as there is proper vault support. Morbidity was minimal, vaginal depth was retained, and there were no deaths.

Abstract:Concern for global health security and the environment due to the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and antibiotic residues in meat and other livestock products has led many countries to restrict the use of antibiotics in animal feed. This experiment was performed to assess the impact of dietary supplementation of a probiotic (Bacillus subtilis) and a postbiotic (Saccharomyces cerevisiae fermentation product) on growth performance, carcass traits, blood haemato-biochemical profile, gut microflora, gut morphology, and immune response in broilers as an alternative to antimicrobials in poultry production system to minimize the effect on global health security. A total of 324 one-day-old Ven Cobb 400 broiler chicks were randomly divided into three dietary groups, each containing 12 replicated pens, and each replicate contained nine chickens. The dietary groups consisted of (1) a basal diet without any growth promoters (T1), (2) the basal diet augmented with Bacillus subtilis at 200 g/MT feed (T2), and (3) the basal diet supplemented with Saccharomyces cerevisiae fermentation product at 1.25 kg/MT feed (T3). To calculate body weight gain, all birds and residual feed were weighed on a replicated basis on days 0, 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, and 42; mortality was recorded daily. At the end of the trial (42 d), two chickens from each replicate were slaughtered for carcass traits, gut microflora, and morphology measurements. Blood samples were collected for the haemato-biochemical profile on 35 d and antibody titer on 28 d and 35 d. Feeding with SCFP (T3 group) significantly improved average daily feed intake (ADFI) and average daily gain (ADG) of chickens compared to the T1 (control) and T2 (probiotic) groups from 1 to 14 days of age. Feed conversion ratio (FCR) was significantly improved in SCFP-fed birds (T3) relative to the control (T1) over the entire experimental period. Carcass traits and blood haemato-biochemical parameters remained unaffected by any diets. However, cholesterol levels and concentrations of corticosterone were significantly lower in T3 compared to T2 and T1 groups. Total E. coli, Enterohaemorrhagic E. coli, ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae, and Salmonella counts were significantly lower in T2 and T3 groups compared to T1 group and Salmonella counts were lower in T3 when compared to T2. However, there was no significant difference in Lactobacillus count among treatment groups. A significant increase in villi height and villi-height-to-crypt-depth ratio (VH: CD) was observed in both T3 and T2 groups. On day 28, the T3 and T2 groups exhibited a significant increase in antibody titers against Newcastle disease virus and infectious bursal disease virus. It can be concluded that Saccharomyces cerevisiae fermentation product and Bacillus subtilis probiotic could be viable alternatives to antimicrobials in poultry production considering beneficial impacts in broilers fed an antibiotic-free diet.

Abstract:This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of Spirulina platensis on growth performance, physiochemical properties of meat, carcass characteristics and breast meat quality in broilers. A total of 144-day old commercial broiler chicks were randomly divided into 3 dietary treatments with 4 replicates having 12 birds per replicate for a period 6 weeks. The dietary treatments were 0 (T1), 1(T2) and 2(T3) % spirulina inclusion in rations. Significantly (P<0.01) higher body weight gain, feed intake and better feed conversion ratio was observed in 1% spirulina supplemented groups. The meat quality parameters viz., crude protein, redness (a*) and yellowness (b*) were significantly (P<0.05) higher in 1% spirulina supplemented groups compared to control. However, no significant difference was observed between spirulina fed groups. Microbial analysis indicates that total plate count (TPC), psychrophiles, yeast and moulds in meat was decreased (P<0.05) linearly as the level of spirulina increased from 0 to 2 %. Sensory attributes like tenderness, juiciness and overall acceptability were significantly (P<0.05) higher in spirulina supplemented groups. Carcass traits revealed that significantly (P<0.05) higher skin weight was observed in control compared to other treatments. However, no significant difference in other parameters like carcass weight, breast weight and carcass percentage. The results indicates that supplementation of spirulina in broiler diets improved the growth performance, increased meat colour, quality and overall acceptability. Hence, it can be concluded that spirulina powder can be fed up to 1 per cent level to improve the broiler production.

Abstract:The study used 96 broiler chickens to evaluate the impact of three species of microalgae on performance, profiles of fatty and amino acids, antioxidants, and meat quality of breast muscles. Birds were divided into four groups (24 birds/each) with 4 replicates (6 birds each). Birds in the first group were fed basal diet and served as a control (C). Birds of 2–4 groups were fed basal diet mixed with same dose (1 g/kg diet) of Chlorella vulgaris (CV), Spirulina platensis (SP), and Amphora coffeaformis (AC). At the age of 36 days, performance parameters were reported, and breast muscle samples were collected and stored frozen at −80 °C. AC shared CV in the superiority of increasing final body weight and body weight gain compared to SP and control. AC shared SP in the superiority of increasing the level of essential fatty and amino acids and decreasing the microbial growth in breast muscle compared to CV and control. All studied microalgae reduced malondialdehyde (MDA) and protein carbonyl (PC) levels, cooking loss, and aerobic plate count (APC) and increased the superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities in breast muscle compared to control. The current study indicated that studied microalgae, notably AC, can be used to enhance performance and meat quality in broilers chickens.

Abstract:This experiment was conducted for comparison the effects of antibiotic (flavomycin), probiotic (primalac), prebiotic (Biolex-MB) and mixture ofprobiotic and prebiotic (primalac plus Biolex-MB) as dietary growth promoter on growth performance, carcass characteristics and hematological indices of broiler chickens. Three hundred day old Ross 308 broilers were equally distributed into 30 floor pens and reared for 42 day. A basal diet was formulated covering the recommendations of NRC (1994) for starter (0-21 days) and grower (22-42 days) periods and considered as control diet. Four tested diets were formulated by supplemented the basal control diet with antibiotic (flavomycin), probiotic (primalac), prebiotic (Biolex-MB) and mixture ofprimalac plus Biolex-MB, respectively. Six replicates were used for each treatment. The results of present study showed that all growth promoters used was improved growth indices of Ross 308 broilers. The highest significant (p<0.05) values of carcass and thigh were recorded for broilers fed diet supplemented with flavomycin. The highest (p>0.05) value of breast was recorded for broilers fed the diet supplemented with primalac, meanwhile the lower value were showed for birds fed either diet or diet supplemented with Biolex-MB. The percent of carcass and cuts followed the same trend. Hematological parameter including cholesterol was recorded the highest (p>0.05) values groups fed the diets either control or supplemented with flavomycin, meanwhile the lower value was showed for bird fed diet supplemented primalac plus Biolex-MB. Triglycerides and very low density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL) were recorded the highest concentration for bird fed both control and diet supplemented with flavomycin groups while least concentration was found for bird fed diet supplemented with primalac. The results of present study revealed that probiotic and prebiotic as growth promoters can use as alternatives non-antibiotic feed additives to their free harmful side effects on the consumers and to improve broiler chickens growth indices.

Abstract:This study was conducted to find the effect of different feed additives on the production performance and intestinal histology in Salmonella challenged birds. A total of 600 day-old-broiler chicks (Ross 308) were assignment to 10 treatments. Each treatment was further divided into 10 replicates. The chicks were randomly divided into one of the following 10 treatments as follow: Negative control; positive control infected with Salmonella enterica subsp. typhimurium; T1, infected + avilamycin at the rate of 0.2 g/kg; T2, infected + probiotic having viable spores (2 × 107 CFU/g) of Bacillus subtilis (ATCC PTA-6737); T3, infected + Sanguinarine consisting of benzo phenanthridine alkaloids from Macleaya cordata; T4, B. subtilis (ATCC PTA-6737) + Sanguinarine; T5, infected + B. subtilis 500 g/T of feed (1.2 × 106 cfu/g); T6, prebiotic, Saccharomyces boulardii (1 × 108cfu/g); T7, infected + oregano at the rate of 1 g/kg; T8, infected + thermally processed clay calcium montmorillonite. The results showed that feed intake was significantly (P < 0.01) high in negative control and T2 compared to the positive control. Body weight gain was significantly (P < 0.01) higher in negative control and significantly (P < 0.05) low in T8. Feed conversion ratio was significantly (P < 0.05) high in negative control and significanlty (P < 0.05) high in T6. Similarly, PEF was also significantly (P < 0.05) high in negative control and significantly (P < 0.05) low in positive control and T8. Villus width was significantly (P < 0.05) high in negative control followed by T8. Dietary supplementation of different feed additives may be useful in broiler chicks challenged with Salmonella infection.
