Abstract:Radionuclide therapy (RNT) stands out as a highly effective method for treating solid tumors. However, its therapeutic efficiency faces challenges due to the radioresistance of tumors, the limited penetration depth and intracellular deposition of rays in tumor tissue, which causes residue of living cancer cells. Herein, we report a novel approach by utilizing radionuclide 131 I-labelled polydopamine encapsulated gold nanoparticle co-loaded with the classical anticancer drug gemcitabine within a hydrogel formed from oxidized glucan and chitosan hydrochloride, combining RNT with chemotherapy for cancer treatment. Au, as a high Z element, is able to interact with shortrange /3-rays to emit bremsstrahlung and secondary charged particles which in turn increase the dose deposited in tumor cells. Simultaneously, gemcitabine is able to affect cell cycle redistribution, resulting in an increase in the radiosensitive cellular component of the cycle, and gemcitabine also inhibits the repair of radioactive damage to cellular DNA, which has a radiosensitizing effect. In both in vivo and vitro experiments, the injectable hydrogel demonstrates excellent biosecurity, stability in radionuclide labeling, and capabilities for single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) imaging. Compared analysis with single RNT revealed that combination therapy markedly inhibits the growth of triple-negative breast cancer. This integrated therapeutic strategy establishes an efficient tumor synergistic treatment platform, offering new avenues for advancing radionuclide therapy in the clinical treatment of cancer.

Abstract:Treating psychiatrists may precipitously and unwittingly be thrust into the role of expert witness because of certain actions they may take on behalf of their patients and may suffer adverse consequences as a result of lack of training and experience. The authors review this problem and suggest means of avoiding the pitfalls involved. Recommendations include warning patients of the uses that will be made of communications between their treaters and third parties, recording the sources of clinical data for use in communications with the legal system, separating the roles of treating psychiatrist and expert witness, and consulting with attorneys or experienced forensic practitioners.

Abstract:Two important features are required for promising radiosensitizers: one is selective tumor cell targeting to enhance the therapeutic outcome via lethal DNA damage and the other is rapid clearance to enable excellent biocompatibility for potential clinical application. Herein, ultrasmall gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) with diameter smaller than 5 nm were prepared and covered with a multifunctional peptide to endow them with selective tumor cell uptake capability. Combined with X-ray irradiation, the responsive Au NPs demonstrated superior radio-sensitizing toxicity and rapid renal clearance in vivo. Methods: A responsive peptide (Tat-R-EK) consists of three build blocks were used: a cell and even nuclear penetrating block derived from human immunodeficiency virus-1 transactivator of transcription protein (Tat), an cathepsin B cleavable linker, and a zwitterionic antifouling block. Ultrasmall Au NPs were prepared and then covered by the peptide via the Au-S bonds between gold and thiol groups from cysteine. The morphology, colloidal stability and the responsiveness of obtained Au@Tat-R-EK NPs were studied using transmittance electron microscopy and dynamic laser scattering. The selective cancer cell uptake and accumulation of Au@Tat-R-EK NPs in cancer tissue were studied via ICP-MS in vitro and in vivo, respectively. The cytotoxicity of Au@Tat-R-EK NPs on HepG2 cancer cells was evaluated in terms of cell viability, DNA damage, intracellular reactive oxygen species generation, and apoptosis analysis. Finally, the biocompatibility and tumor destruction ability against orthotopic LM3 liver cancers were verified in vivo. Results: Multifunctional peptide modified ultrasmall Au NPs were successfully prepared. The Au NPs exhibited enough colloidal stability and cathepsin B-responsive surface change, leading to selectively uptake by cancer cells in vitro and accumulation to tumor sites in vivo. Combined with X-ray irradiation, the responsive Au NPs demonstrated superior radio-sensitizing cytotoxicity in vitro and therapeutic outcome on mouse liver cancer in vivo. The ultrasmall size enables rapid clearance of the Au NPs, guarantees the biocompatibility in vivo for potential clinical applications. Conclusion: Some obstacles faced by the Au NPs-based radiotherapy, such as short circulation half-life, non-specific distribution, slow clearance and low radio-sensitizing effect, were effective solved through rational design of the smart nanomedicine. This work provides new insight in designing tumor microenvironment-responsive nanomedicine in cancer radiotherapy.
Au-Pt Nanoparticle Formulation as a Radiosensitizer for Radiotherapy with Dual Effects

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Radiotherapy occupies an essential position as one of the most significant approaches for the clinical treatment of cancer. However, we cannot overcome the shortcoming of X-rays which is the high value of the oxygen enhancement ratio (OER). Radiosensitizers with the ability to enhance the radiosensitivity of tumor cells provide an alternative to changing X-rays to protons and heavy ion radiotherapy.MATERIALS AND METHODS: We prepared the Au-Pt nanoparticles (Au-Pt NPs) using a one-step method. The characteristics of the Au-Pt NPs were determined using TEM, HAADF-STEM, elemental mapping images, and DLS. The enhanced radiotherapy was demonstrated in vitro using MTT assays, colony formation assays, fluorescence imaging, and flow cytometric analyses of the apoptosis. The biodistribution of the Au-Pt NPs was analyzed using ICP-OES, and thermal images. The enhanced radiotherapy was demonstrated in vitro using immunofluorescence images, tumor volume and weigh, and hematoxylin & eosin (H&E) staining.RESULTS: Polyethylene glycol (PEG) functionalized nanoparticles composed of the metallic elements Au and Pt were designed to increase synergistic radiosensitivity. The mechanism demonstrated that heavy metal NPs possess a high X-ray photon capture cross-section and Compton scattering effect which increased DNA damage. Furthermore, the Au-Pt NPs exhibited enzyme-mimicking activities by catalyzing the decomposition of endogenous H2O2 to O2 in the solid tumor microenvironment (TME).CONCLUSION: Our work provides a systematically administered radiosensitizer that can selectively reside in a tumor via the EPR effect and enhances the efficiency of treating cancer with radiotherapy.

Green Nanoformulations of Polyvinylpyrrolidone-Capped Metal Nanoparticles: A Study at the Hybrid Interface with Biomimetic Cell Membranes and In Vitro Cell Models

Abstract:Noble metal nanoparticles (NP) with intrinsic antiangiogenic, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties have great potential as potent chemotherapeutics, due to their unique features, including plasmonic properties for application in photothermal therapy, and their capability to slow down the migration/invasion speed of cancer cells and then suppress metastasis. In this work, gold (Au), silver (Ag), and palladium (Pd) NP were synthesized by a green redox chemistry method with the reduction of the metal salt precursor with glucose in the presence of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as stabilizing and capping agent. The physicochemical properties of the PVP-capped NP were investigated by UV-visible (UV-vis) and attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopies, dynamic light scattering (DLS), and atomic force microscopy (AFM), to scrutinize the optical features and the interface between the metal surface and the capping polymer, the hydrodynamic size, and the morphology, respectively. Biophysical studies with model cell membranes were carried out by using laser scanning confocal microscopy (LSM) with fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP) and fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) techniques. To this purpose, artificial cell membranes of supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) made with 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycerol-3-phosphocholine (POPC) dye-labeled with 7-nitro-2-1,3-benzoxadiazol-4-yl (NBD, FRET donor) and/or lissamine rhodamine B sulfonyl (Rh, FRET acceptor) were prepared. Proof-of-work in vitro cellular experiments were carried out with prostate cancer cells (PC-3 line) in terms of cytotoxicity, cell migration (wound scratch assay), NP cellular uptake, and cytoskeleton actin perturbation.

Abstract:The desire for all-organic-composed nanoparticles (NPs) of considerable biocompatibility to simultaneously diagnose and treat cancer is undeniably interminable. Heretofore, metal-based agents dominate the landscape of available magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents and photothermal therapeutic agents, but with associated metal-specific downsides. Here, an all-organic metal-free nanoprobe, whose appreciable biocompatibility is synergistically contributed by its tetra-organo-components, is developed as a viable alternative to metal-based probes for MRI-guided tumor-targeted photothermal therapy (PTT). This rationally entails a glycol chitosan (GC)-linked polypyrrole (PP) nanoscaffold that provides abundant primary and secondary amino groups for amidation with the carboxyl groups in a nitroxide radical (TEMPO) and folic acid (FA), to obtain NPs. Advantageously, the appreciably benign features high nitroxide loading (r1 = 1.58 mM–1 s–1) and in vivo nitroxide-reduction resistance, prolonged nitroxide-systemic circulation times, appreciable water dispersibility, potential photodynamic therapeutic and electron paramagnetic resonance imaging capabilities, considerable biocompatibility, and ultimately achieves a 17 h commensurate MRI contrast enhancement. Moreover, its GC component conveys a plethora of PP to tumor sites, where FA-mediated tumor targeting enables substantial NP accumulation with consequential near-complete tumor regression within 16 days in an MRI-guided PTT. Abstract:Proton therapy is used to eradicate tumors in sensitive areas by targeted delivery of energy. Its effectiveness can be amplified using nanoparticles as sensitizers, due to the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) at the nanoparticle´s catalytically active surface, causing the cleavage of DNA. However, the impact of stabilizing macromolecular ligands capping the particles, needed for nanosensitizer dispersion in physiological fluids, is underexplored. In this work, we use initially ligand-free colloidal platinum nanoparticles (PtNP) fabricated by scalable laser synthesis in liquids, which allows studying particle and ligand effects separately. PtNP are incubated with stabilizing concentrations of the clinically approved ligands albumin, Tween, and polyethylene glycol, and irradiated with proton beams at clinically relevant doses (2 Gy and 5 Gy). At these doses, plasmid DNA cleavage larger than 55% of clustered DNA damage is achieved. BSA, Tween, and polyethylene glycol on the NP surface work as double strand breaking (DSB) enhancers and synergetic effects occur even at low and clinically relevant particle concentrations and irradiation doses. Here, DSB enhancement by ligand-capped PtNP even exceeds the sum of the individual ligand and particle effects. The presented fundamental correlations provide selection rules for nanosensitizer design in proton therapy.

Abstract:This review presents a strong case for the use of green synthesis techniques to create metal‐based nanoparticles that will perform efficiently for cancer therapy due to the nontoxic, economical, and environmentally friendly nature of green synthesis. Cancer remains a global health crisis, claiming countless lives throughout the years. Traditional cancer treatments like chemotherapy and radiation often bring about severe side effects, underscoring the pressing need for innovative, more efficient, and less toxic therapies. Nanotechnology has emerged as a promising technology capable of producing environmentally friendly anticancer nanoparticles. Among various nanoparticle types, metal‐based nanoparticles stand out due to their exceptional performance and ease of use in methods of imaging. The widespread accessibility of biological precursors for synthesis based on plants of metal nanoparticles has made large‐scale, eco‐friendly production feasible. This evaluation provides a summary of the green strategy for synthesizing metal‐based nanoparticles and explores their applications. Moreover, this review delves into the potential of phyto‐based metal nanoparticles in combating cancer, shedding light on their probable mechanisms of action. These insights are invaluable for enhancing both biomedical and environmental applications. The study also touches on the numerous potential applications of nanotechnology in the field of medicine. Abstract:We propose a general green method coupled with a solid-state vibration ball milling strategy for the synthesis of various metal nanoparticles (MNPs), employing a polymeric carbohydrate dextran (Dx) as a reducing and stabilizing molecule. The synthesis of size-controlled Dx-based MNPs (Dx@MNPs), featuring comparatively narrow size distributions, was achieved by controlling the mass ratio of the reactants, reaction time, frequency of the vibration ball mill, and molecular weight of Dx. Notably, this process was conducted at ambient temperatures, without the aid of solvents and accelerating agents, such as NaOH, and conventional reductants as well as stabilizers. Thermal properties of the resulting Dx@MNPs nanocomposites were extensively investigated, highlighting the influence of metal precursors and reaction conditions. Furthermore, the catalytic activity of synthesized nanocomposites was evaluated through the reduction reaction of 4-nitrophenol, exhibiting great catalytic performance. In addition, we demonstrated the excellent biocompatibility of the as-prepared Dx@MNPs toward human embryonic kidney (HEK-293) cells, revealing their potential for anticancer activities. This novel green method for synthesizing biocompatible MNPs with Dx expands the horizons of carbohydrate-based materials as well as MNP nanocomposites for large-scale synthesis and controlled size distribution for various industrial and biomedical applications.

Abstract:Since the discovery of metal nanoparticles (NPs) in the 1960s, unknown toxicity, cost and the ethical hurdles of research in humans have hindered the translation of these NPs to clinical use. In this work, we demonstrate that Pt NPs with protein coronas are generated in vivo in human blood when a patient is treated with cisplatin. These self-assembled Pt NPs form rapidly, accumulate in tumors, and remain in the body for an extended period of time. Additionally, the Pt NPs are safe for use in humans and can act as anti-cancer agents to inhibit chemotherapy-resistant tumor growth by consuming intracellular glutathione and activating apoptosis. The tumor inhibitory activity is greatly amplified when the Pt NPs are loaded in vitro with the chemotherapeutic drug, daunorubicin, and the formulation is effective even in daunorubicin-resistant models. These in vivo-generated metal NPs represent a biocompatible drug delivery platform for chemotherapy resistant tumor treatment.

Abstract:Radiotherapy has been, and will continue to be, a critical modality to treat cancer. Since the discovery of radiation-induced cytotoxicity in the late 19th century, both external and internal radiation sources have provided tremendous benefits to extend the life of cancer patients. Despite the dramatic improvement of radiation techniques, however, one challenge persists to limit the anti-tumor efficacy of radiotherapy, which is to maximize the deposited dose in tumor while sparing the rest of the healthy vital organs. Nanomedicine has stepped into the spotlight of cancer diagnosis and therapy during the past decades. Nanoparticles can potentiate radiotherapy by specifically delivering radionuclides or radiosensitizers into tumors, therefore enhancing the efficacy while alleviating the toxicity of radiotherapy. This paper reviews recent advances in synthetic nanoparticles for radiotherapy and radiosensitization, with a focus on the enhancement of in vivo anti-tumor activities. We also provide a brief discussion on radiation-associated toxicities as this is an area that, up to date, has been largely missing in the literature and should be closely examined in future studies involving nanoparticle-mediated radiosensitization.

Abstract:Radiotherapy is one of the most common therapeutic regimens for cancer treatment. Over the past decade, proton therapy (PT) has emerged as an advanced type of radiotherapy (RT) that uses proton beams instead of conventional photon RT. Both PT and carbon-ion beam therapy (CIBT) exhibit excellent therapeutic results because of the physical characteristics of the resulting Bragg peaks, which has been exploited for cancer treatment in medical centers worldwide. Although particle therapies show significant advantages to photon RT by minimizing the radiation damage to normal tissue after the tumors, they still cause damage to normal tissue before the tumor. Since the physical mechanisms are different from particle therapy and photon RT, efforts have been made to ameliorate these effects by combining nanomaterials and particle therapies to improve tumor targeting by concentrating the radiation effects. Metallic nanoparticles (MNPs) exhibit many unique properties, such as strong X-ray absorption cross-sections and catalytic activity, and they are considered nano-radioenhancers (NREs) for RT. In this review, we systematically summarize the putative mechanisms involved in NRE-induced radioenhancement in particle therapy and the experimental results in in vitro and in vivo models. We also discuss the potential of translating preclinical metal-based NP-enhanced particle therapy studies into clinical practice using examples of several metal-based NREs, such as SPION, Abraxane, AGuIX, and NBTXR3. Furthermore, the future challenges and development of NREs for PT are presented for clinical translation. Finally, we propose a roadmap to pursue future studies to strengthen the interplay of particle therapy and nanomedicine.

Abstract:The increasing number of multi-drug-resistant bacteria and cancer cases, that are a real threat to humankind, forces research world to develop new weapons to deal with it. Biogenic silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are considered as a solution to this problem. Biosynthesis of AgNPs is regarded as a green, eco-friendly, low-priced process that provides small and biocompatible nanostructures with antimicrobial and anticancer activities and potential application in medicine. The biocompatibility of these nanoparticles is related to the coating with biomolecules of natural origin. The synthesis of AgNPs from actinobacterial strain was confirmed using UV-Vis spectroscopy while their morphology, crystalline structure, stability, and coating were characterized using, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Zeta potential and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Antibacterial activity of biogenic AgNPs was evaluated by determination of minimum inhibitory and minimum biocidal concentrations (MIC and MBC) against Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus. The potential mechanism of antibacterial action of AgNPs was determined by measurement of ATP level. Since the use of AgNPs in biomedical applications depend on their safety, the in vitro cytotoxicity of biosynthesized AgNPs on MCF-7 human breast cancer cell line and murine macrophage cell line RAW 264.7 using MTT [3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide] assay, cell lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release and measurement of reactive oxygen species (ROS) level were assessed. The nanoparticle protein capping agent that can be involved in reduction of silver ions to AgNPs and their stabilization was identified using LC-MS/MS. Nanoparticles were spherical in shape, small in size (mean 13.2 nm), showed crystalline nature, good stability (-18.7 mV) and presence of capping agents. They exhibited antibacterial activity (MIC of 8-128 μg ml-1, MBC of 64-256 μg ml-1) and significantly decreased ATP levels in bacterial cells after treatment with different concentrations of AgNPs. The in vitro analysis showed that the AgNPs demonstrated dose-dependent cytotoxicity against RAW 264.7 macrophages and MCF-7 breast cancer cells but higher against the latter than the former. Cell viability decrease was found to be 42.2-14.2 and 38.0-15.5% while LDH leakage 14.6-42.7% and 19.0-45.0%, respectively. IC50 values calculated for MTT assay was found to be 16.3 and 12.0 μg ml-1 and for LDH assay 102.3 and 76.2 μg ml-1, respectively. Moreover, MCF-7 cells released a greater amount of ROS than RAW 264.7 macrophages during stimulation with all tested concentrations of AgNPs (1.47-3.13 and 1.02-2.58 fold increase, respectively). The SDS-PAGE (sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis) analysis revealed the presence of five protein bands at a molecular weight between 31.7 and 280.9 kDa. These proteins showed the highest homology to hypothetical proteins and porins from E. coli, Delftia sp. and Pseudomonas rhodesiae. Based on obtained results it can be concluded that biogenic AgNPs were capped with proteins and demonstrated potential as antimicrobial and anticancer agent.

Abstract:Palladium nanoparticles (PdNPs) have emerged as promising metal nanoparticles in biomedical applications. In particular, green-synthesized PdNPs have gained significant attention due to their advantages of being simple, cost-effective, and low-toxic. This review summarizes the green synthesis of medicinal-oriented PdNPs using natural sources such as plants, mushrooms, algae, fungi, and biological molecules. Furthermore, this review discusses the potential biomedical applications of these green-synthesized PdNPs such as photothermal therapy, antibacterial/antitumor therapies, drug delivery, and imaging. It also identifies the current challenges and prospects for their use in these applications. Overall, this review demonstrates the promising potential of biogenic PdNPs for biomedical applications and provides valuable insights for future research in this field.

Abstract:In recent times, metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs) have been regarded as having important commercial utility. However, the potential toxicity of these nanomaterials has also been a crucial research concern. In this regard, an important solution for ensuring lower toxicity levels and thereby facilitating an unhindered application in human consumer products is the green synthesis of these particles. Although a naïve approach, the biological synthesis of metal oxide NPs using microorganisms and plant extracts opens up immense prospects for the production of biocompatible and cost-effective particles with potential applications in the healthcare sector. An important area that calls for attention is cancer therapy and the intervention of nanotechnology to improve existing therapeutic practices. Metal oxide NPs have been identified as therapeutic agents with an extended half-life and therapeutic index and have also been reported to have lesser immunogenic properties. Currently, biosynthesized metal oxide NPs are the subject of considerable research and analysis for the early detection and treatment of tumors, but their performance in clinical experiments is yet to be determined. The present review provides a comprehensive account of recent research on the biosynthesis of metal oxide NPs, including mechanistic insights into biological production machinery, the latest reports on biogenesis, the properties of biosynthesized NPs, and directions for further improvement. In particular, scientific reports on the properties and applications of nanoparticles of the oxides of titanium, cerium, selenium, zinc, iron, and copper have been highlighted. This review discusses the significance of the green synthesis of metal oxide nanoparticles, with respect to therapeutically based pharmaceutical applications as well as energy and environmental applications, using various novel approaches including one-minute sonochemical synthesis that are capable of responding to various stimuli such as radiation, heat, and pH. This study will provide new insight into novel methods that are cost-effective and pollution free, assisted by the biodegradation of biomass.

Abstract:It remains a major challenge to develop an effective therapeutic system based on gold nanorods (GNRs) for cancer therapy. Herein, we developed a redox-responsive, in-situ polymerized polyplatinum(IV)-coated gold nanorod ((IV)) with coupling of the near-infrared (NIR)-induced hyperthermal effect and redox-triggered drug release in one therapeutic platform as an amplifier of tumor accumulation through mild hyperthermia for enhanced synergistical thermo-chemotherapy. After in-situ polymerized with 2-methacryloyloxy ethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) and Pt(IV) complex-based prodrug monomer (PPM) onto the surface of GNRs, the nanosized (IV) exhibited the advantages of high drug encapsulation efficiency, triggered drug release, and reduced side effect. As demonstrated by thermal imaging and photoacoustic imaging in vitro and in vivo, this (IV) exhibited an excellent NIR-associated hyperthermal effect and outstanding capacity of tumor accumulation. Importantly, under a mild hyperthermia process, the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) were upregulation, resulting in angiogenic vessel around the tumor. Combination with accelerated blood flow and angiogenesis by mild hyperthermia, a dramatic increase of drug accumulation in tumor could be realized after systematic administration. As a result, this amplification fashion of tumor accumulation would contribute the (IV) to inhibit tumor progression effectively. Such a facile and simple methodology for enhanced therapeutic effect based on GNRs holds great promises for cancer therapy with further development.

Abstract:Platinum (Pt)-based high-Z metallic nanoassemblies are admittedly effective radiosensitizers for radiotherapy. The preparation of metallic nanoassemblies with supramolecular self-assembly approach depends on the use of a metal-organic framework or coordination polymer (CP) as a template, which brings about challenges of removing template, controlling nanoassembly size and sufficiently loading Pt to obtain high catalytic efficiency essential for radiosensitizers. Herein, a novel synthetic strategy for fabricating metallic nanoassemblies was developed by introducing an imine group and reducing moiety into the metal-organic CPs, resulting in a reversible redox property. Owing to the nanoconfinement ability of this redox-labile CP template, a one-step synthetic pathway allows the formation of mixed-valence Pt nanoassemblies (PNAs) [Pt(0)/Pt 2+ ] that spontaneously encapsulate high-density and small-sized Pt nanoparticles in the CP template. The PNAs not only catalyze the hydrogen peroxide into oxygen but also release Pt ions in the tumor environment, thus simultaneously exhibits radiosensitization to improve the radiodynamic therapy and activates an antitumor immune response. Meanwhile, the PNAs bear the potential to act as a computed tomography-imaging agent for tumor diagnosis due to the high density of loaded Pt. Both in vitro and in vivo evaluations manifest the attractive properties of PNAs as a radiation-driven theranostic nanoplatform for tumor treatment.

Abstract:Complete response to cancer treatment is an important challenge that has puzzled mankind. Fortunately, radiotherapy gives rise to a common clinical treatment method, during which the usage of radio-sensitizers is very essential. Among preclinical radio-sensitizers, Bi-based nanoparticles (NPs) are widely explored in cancer diagnosis and treatment, because they share favourable properties such as low toxicity, strong X-ray absorption, and facile preparation. However, pure Bi alone cannot achieve both efficient and safe radiotherapy outcomes mainly due to tumorsite poor targeting, long retention induced systemic toxicity and immune resistance. This work overviews the recent advances and development of Bi-based NPs which were tailored to enhance radio-sensitivity. As for the fabrication process, the surface modification of Bi-based NPs is essential to achieve tumor targeted delivery and penetration. Moreover, the incorporation of other elements like Fe ions can increase diagnosis accuracy with an optimal theranostic efficacy. Meanwhile, the structure-activity-relationship can also be manipulated to maximum the chemotherapeutic drugs loading capability of Bi-based NPs, or enhance the X-ray attenuation via a large surface area, or get more safe metabolism routes with a rapid clearance from human body. Besides, Bi-based NPs exhibit synergistic antitumor potential when combined with diverse therapies such as PTT, HIFU. To summarize, the latest research of Bi-based NPs as radio-sensitizers is thoroughly elucidated in this review including both advantages to strengthen and disadvantages to improve, providing a useful guidance for the future clinical application.

Abstract:The nanomaterial industry generates gigantic quantities of metal-based nanomaterials for various technological and biomedical applications; however, concomitantly, it places a massive burden on the environment by utilizing toxic chemicals for the production process and leaving hazardous waste materials behind. Moreover, the employed, often unpleasant chemicals can affect the biocompatibility of the generated particles and severely restrict their application possibilities. On these grounds, green synthetic approaches have emerged, offering eco-friendly, sustainable, nature-derived alternative production methods, thus attenuating the ecological footprint of the nanomaterial industry. In the last decade, a plethora of biological materials has been tested to probe their suitability for nanomaterial synthesis. Although most of these approaches were successful, a large body of evidence indicates that the green material or entity used for the production would substantially define the physical and chemical properties and as a consequence, the biological activities of the obtained nanomaterials. The present review provides a comprehensive collection of the most recent green methodologies, surveys the major nanoparticle characterization techniques and screens the effects triggered by the obtained nanomaterials in various living systems to give an impression on the biomedical potential of green synthesized silver and gold nanoparticles.

Abstract:Noble metal nanoparticles (NMNPs) are viable alternative green sources compared to the chemical available methods in several approach like Food, medical, biotechnology, and textile industries. The biological synthesis of platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs), as a strong photocatalytic agent, has proved as more effective and safer method. In this study, PtNPs were synthesized at four different temperatures (25 °C, 50 °C, 70 °C, and 100 °C). PtNPs synthesized at 100 °C were smaller and exhibited spherical morphology with a high degree of dispersion. A series of physicochemical characterizations were applied to investigate the synthesis, particle size, crystalline nature, and surface morphology of PtNPs. The biosynthesized PtNPs were tested for the photodegradation of methylene blue (MB) under visible light irradiations. The results showed that PtNPs exhibited remarkable photocatalytic activity by degrading 98% of MB only in 40 min. The acid phosphatase mediated PtNPs showed strong bacterial inhibition efficiency against S. aureus and E. coli. Furthermore, it showed high antioxidant activity (88%) against 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazil (DPPH). In conclusion, this study provided an overview of the applications of PtNPs in food chemistry, biotechnology, and textile industries for the deterioration of the natural and synthetic dyes and its potential application in the suppression of pathogenic microbes of the biological systems. Thus, it could be used as a novel approach in the food microbiology, biomedical and environmental applications.
