Abstract:A novel electrochemical sensor, whose working electrode was a glassy carbon electrode modified with amorphous zinc/copper double transition metal hydroxides(ZnCu-TMH/GCE), was developed for simultaneous detection of dopamine(DA), serotonin(5-HT) and melatonin(MT), which were important for understanding and treatment of circadian rhythm disorders disease. The working electrode was studied by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). It showed that amorphous ZnCu-TMH can significantly improve the oxidation of DA during the simultaneous detection of DA, 5-HT and MT, and the electrochemical peak potential difference was as low as 0.15V between DA and 5-HT, showing very good electrocatalytic performance. By optimizing the detection conditions, the sensor showed good linear response to DA, 5-HT and MT in the range of 3 × 10-6 mol/L ~ 1 × 10-3 mol/L (with two linear relationship curves), and the detection limits were 1.048×10-6, 2.213×10-6 and 2.356×10-6 mol/L (S/N = 3), respectively. In addition, ZnCu-TMH/GCE was successfully applied to the simultaneous detection of DA, 5-HT and MT in human saliva samples.

Abstract:Dopamine is an important neurotransmitter for organisms and affects their function, so monitoring and detecting dopamine levels is essential. Sensitivity and selectivity of electrochemical sensors for the detection of dopamine usually relies on hybrid nanocomposites. In this context, we designed a micro-regionally restricted hybrid nanocomposite by modulating the micro-nano structure. Using functional groups on nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide (N-rGO) to restrict the random growth of tungsten disulfide nanosheets, we obtained a 2D layered material with bidirectional structural support to achieve high specific surface and high activity for application in robust and novel dopamine electrochemical sensors. A facile electrochemical sensor for dopamine detection was fabricated by modifying a screen-printed carbon electrode with the nanocomposite. The sensor exhibits excellent performance of dopamine detection in the wide range of 1 μmol/L100 μmol/L with a detection limit of 0.2 μmol/L and a high sensitivity of 0.56 μA/μmol/L. The optimized sensor shows a good selectivity, satisfactory long-term stability and reproducibility towards DA and a separation of peak potential of 142 mV with uric acid. In addition, the prepared sensor provides favorable recovery in human serum and artificial cerebrospinal solution (aSCF), indicating great potentials in electrochemical detection and biological sensing applications.

Abstract:The identification and quantification of melatonin (MT) are crucial for early diagnosis of disorders associated with circadian rhythm disruption. Herein, novel blue-emissive carbon dots (BCDs) were synthesized through an improved hydrothermal treatment using serine and malic acid as reductant and carbon source. The excellent optical properties of the as-obtained BCDs were used for ratiometric sensing by strategically constructing a MT sensing system integrating BCDs with C 3 N 4 nanosheets loaded with platinum/ruthenium nanoparticles (PtRu/CN). In this system, H 2 O 2 activated the peroxidase-like activity of PtRu/CN to generate •OH and 1 O 2 for oxidizing the colorless o-phenylenediamine (OPD) into yellow 2,3-diaminophenazine (DAP) with fluorescence emission at 565 nm. Concurrently, the fluorescence emission of BCDs at 439 nm was quenched by the generated DAP via the static quenching and inner filter effect (IFE) process. However, MT rapidly scavenged the generated free radicals to reverse the ratio fluorescence signal. The developed BCDs/PtRu/CN/OPD/H 2 O 2 sensing platform enabled quantitative analysis of MT at concentrations ranging from 0.06 to 600 μmol/L with a low detection limit of 23.56 nmol/L. Moreover, smartphone-based RGB sensing of MT was successfully developed for rapid visualization and portable processing. More broadly, novel insights into the preparation of carbon dots with sensitive fluorescence sensing properties were presented, promising for future considerations.

Abstract:In the present study, we have designed a highly conductive electrode material niobium carbide (NbC) entangled with copper phosphate (Cu3P2O8). The combined features of the efficient electrocatalyst with improved electrical conductivity, more active sites, with a high surface area were employed for the electrochemical sensing of melatonin (MLT). MLT is a naturally secreted hormone in our brain responsible for maintaining our daily circadian cycle. The detection of such hormones in clinical studies can help maintain several problems. The Cu3P2O8/NbC was initially characterized to analyze the physicochemical properties. The high crystalline Cu3P2O8 resembled a self-assembled flake ball-like structure entangled with NbC sheets. The synergistic effect between the catalyst enhances the electrochemical performance of MLT. The Cu3P2O8/NbC fabricated glassy carbon electrode obtained an enhanced oxidation response of MLT. The linearity range of MLT was about 0.014–1517.68 μM with a low limit of detection of about 0.0083 μM. The fabricated electrode showed high selectivity to the interfering compounds added and the sensitivity was about 5.137 μA μM–1 cm–2. The real samples showed good results at the Cu3P2O8/NbC/GCE. The Cu3P2O8/NbC/GCE will be more efficient and reliable in detecting the employed drugs or any other analytes of choice. Thus, the low cost, with improved electrochemical performances and significant features of the prepared electrode will be of great interest.

Abstract:This work describes the preparation and application of a screen-printed electrode (SPE) for direct melatonin (MT) determination in samples of saliva and urine. The low-cost SPE was obtained using a simple and feasible 2D printing methodology and a lab-made conductive ink based on graphite powder and colorless nail polish. The proposed electrode showed similar electrochemical performance compared to a commercial SPE towards melatonin oxidation. Based on electrooxidation of melatonin recorded at +0.62 V an electroanalytical method was developed using the lab-made SPE under square wave voltammetric conditions. Repeatability and reproducibility studies showed that the relative peak current values did not show significant differences between them. Under optimized parameters inherent to the methodology and voltammetric technique, the proposed SPE presented a linear dynamic range (LDR) between 0.25 to 75.0 μ mol L −1 (R2 = 0.99), and calculated limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) of 25.8 and 83.3 nmol L −1 , respectively, were obtained. The effect of other biologically relevant compounds such as glucose, urea, and estradiol was investigated, and non-significative signal interference was observed. The method proposed was successfully applied to MT determination in spiked samples providing good recovery values between 95.6 to 104%.

Abstract:Herein we report the simultaneous determination of serotonin (5-HT) and melatonin (MT) by using highly ordered and vertically-oriented mesoporous silica-nanochannel films (VMSF) on highly electrochemically reduced graphene oxide-carbon nanotubes (HErGO-CNT) composite substrate. Such VMSF/HErGO-CNT with compact 2D–2D layered structure is fabricated on indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes via a two-step electrochemical process, namely the electrodeposition of ErGO-CNT film onto the ITO surface by cyclic voltammetry and subsequently growth of VMSF on the ErGO-CNT/ITO surface by electrochemically assisted self-assembly method, during which graphene oxide (GO) is subjected to the two-time electrochemical reduction to form HErGO. The CNT encased in the GO sheets served as electronic conducting wires, which not only can promote the electrochemical reduction of GO but also contribute to a certain degree of hydrophobicity, facilitating the controllable electrodeposition of ErGO-CNT composites on ITO under its safe use potential window. In addition, doping CNT is able to enlarge the layer gap between graphene sheets and thus improves the electroactive area and mass transfer of the nanocarbon composite substrate. Furthermore, the underlying HErGO-CNT acts as an efficient electroactive layer and the outer VMSF possesses electrostatic preconcentration and anti-fouling functions, synergistically realizing the direct electrochemical analysis of 5-HT and MT in two complex biological fluids (human whole blood and artificial cerebrospinal fluid).

Abstract:Catechol, a polyphenolic molecule and significant organic chemical intermediate, is a highly dangerous environmental contaminant due to its unpredictable nature and potential harm to both humans and the environment. This study presents the development of Sn MOF@rGO-650, identified as a hollow cube by SEM and TEM, created by carbonizing rGO on the surface of Sn MOF after in situ encapsulation. The Sn MOF@rGO-650 modified glassy carbon electrode was successfully constructed for the electrochemical detection of catechol. Under optimal conditions, the sensor exhibited a detection limit of 33 nM, a linear range of 0.20 μM-28 μM, and good long-term stability and reproducibility. This work proves for the first time that Sn MOF@rGO-650 composites can effectively detect catechol in real environmental water samples, achieving recoveries between 95.7 % and 104.8 %, and is validated in UV spectroscopy, which highlights its potential for practical applications.

Abstract:In this investigation, a rapid microwave-assisted method was employed for the first time to synthesize the GO/SnTe nanocomposite. This approach lowers the energy barrier and accelerates the reaction, significantly impacting the shape and activity of the GO/SnTe nanocomposite. Tin telluride is a desirable electroactive component because of its low bandgap and high theoretical capacity. Additionally, the high surface area and defective structure of GO promote enhanced current flow across the electrode. The integration of these two materials generates a synergistic effect, enhancing electrocatalytic activity for the efficient oxidation of caffeine. Furthermore, the fabricated GO/SnTe-GC electrode outperformed reported electrodes for caffeine oxidation, exhibiting a broad linear range of 4.1–255 μM and a detection limit of 1.56 μM. On the other hand, the findings from real sample analysis and anti-interference studies indicate that this innovative material holds promise for developing novel electrochemical sensors. Particularly, graphene oxide modified with tin chalcogenides act as a real-time sensor with specific applications to real samples such as human milk and drug formulations.

Abstract:A three-electrode screen-printed sensor with heavily doped microcrystalline boron-doped diamond electrodes grown by chemical vapor deposition on alumina substrates was used to determine the concentration of melatonin by constant current potentiometric stripping analysis. This paper provides a detailed examination of the irreversible oxidation behavior of melatonin by cyclic voltammetry at a boron-doped diamond electrode. The relationship between the current response and the square root of the scan rate confirmed a diffusion-controlled oxidation process. The research highlights the strong effect of electrode pretreatment on electrode properties, demonstrating its influence on electrochemical activity and electron-transfer kinetics. After the electrodes were cathodically pretreated, the melatonin responses increased more than four times compared to the anodically pretreated electrodes. Optimum results were obtained in constant current potentiometric stripping analysis at pH value of 3.0 using the Britton-Robinson buffer solution as an electrolyte. Further optimization of the accumulation potential/time, and stripping current led to improved melatonin detection sensitivity, achieving a significantly lower limit of detection of 14.6 μg L −1 compared to square wave voltammetry (110 μg L −1 ). Interference studies assessed the impact of selected organic compounds on melatonin determination. While some compounds like dopamine, l -ascorbic acid, and uric acid showed minimal interference, l -tryptophan and serotonin significantly influenced melatonin responses. The sensor was successfully applied to determine of melatonin in a commercial pharmaceutical supplement. A satisfactory result was obtained by constant current potentiometric stripping analysis as the recovery reached 100.75 % compared to the reference value obtained by the LC-HRMS method. The proposed method, due to the excellent properties of the boron-doped diamond electrode and constant current potentiometric stripping analysis, provides a fast measurement procedure of melatonin with high sensitivity (compared to square wave voltammetry) at a stable background signal. Moreover, the method is insensitive to dissolved oxygen in the electrolyte and only the stripping current of the potentiometric stripping analysis needs to be optimized.

Abstract:This work developed a sensitive fluorescence and colorimetric dual-channel sensing system for melatonin determination based on iron-cobalt oxide nanosheets (FeCo-ONSs) and gold nanoclusters (AuNCs). FeCo-ONSs exhibited excellent peroxidase (POD)-like activities, that could catalyze H 2 O 2 to produce reactive oxygen species and further catalyze N-ethyl-N-(3-sulfopropyl)-3-methylaniline sodium (TOPS) to couple with 4-amino-antipyrine (4-AAP) to generate purple compounds (PCs), which had absorption at 549 nm. The generated PCs can quench the fluorescence of AuNCs at 577 nm via fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET). The process of the generation of purple compounds would be restrained in existence of melatonin due to its scavenging capacity for free radicals. As a consequence, the absorption at 549 nm decreased, while the fluorescence quenching of AuNCs was weakened, and emission intensity at 577 nm progressively recovered. The recovery of fluorescence and the decrease in absorption depended on the concentration of melatonin. Therefore, by employing fluorescence and colorimetric dual signal monitoring, the linear ranges of melatonin were 5–300 μM and 5–800 μM, and the LODs were 1.17 μM and 2.13 μM, respectively.

Abstract:Dopamine is an important neurotransmitter, and nonenzyme electrochemical sensor of dopamine detection based on highly active material is urgently demanded. In this work, an electrochemical sensor with high sensitivity and selectivity based on self-rolled TiO2 microscroll/graphene composite was developed and validated for dopamine sensing. The device exhibited a superior performance for dopamine detection with a detection limit of 4.25 × 10-9 mol L-1, and in the dopamine concentration range of 0.06–90 μmol L-1, the oxidation currents increased linearly with the concentration. The remarkable performance enhancement was mainly ascribed to the increased surface area due to the porous surface of the TiO2 nanomembrane and highly conductive graphene therein. In addition, we have demonstrated that the sensor could be effectively used on detecting dopamine concentrations in urine samples. Our work demonstrates that the current microscroll-based device is promising in the field of real-time health monitoring for future human community.
An ultra-sensitive dopamine photoelectrochemical sensing platform based on two-dimensional Zn carbon nanosheets, hollow Cu2O and CdTe QDs composite films

Abstract:In this work, two-dimensional Zn carbon nanosheets (CNs) are obtained after heat treatment of in situ synthesized ZIF-8/NaCl nanocomposites, which are ultrasonically mixed with carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). Subsequently, the nanocomposites Zn CNs-MWCNTs with large specific surface area and excellent catalytic properties are obtained. Meanwhile, the photoelectric material H–Cu2O/CdTe QDs are drop-coated on Zn CNs-MWCNTs/GCE and the modified electrode Zn CNs-MWCNTs/H–Cu2O/CdTe QDs/GCE is obtained. Eventually, a novel dopamine photoelectrochemical sensor based on Zn CNs-MWCNTs/H–Cu2O/CdTe QDs/GCE is constructed. Among them, the photocurrent intensity of H–Cu2O/CdTe QDs is much higher than that of pure H–Cu2O and pure CdTe QDs. This is due to the effective combination of CdTe QDs and H–Cu2O to form a p-p heterojunction, which can effectively suppress the recombination of electron-hole pairs. Subsequently, the working mechanism of the photoelectrochemical sensor is investigated in depth by the Kubelka-Munk model. At the same time, the photoelectrochemical sensor has reliable selectivity, stability, reproducibility and limit of detection (LOD = 0.3 nM), and also provides a new idea for the detection of dopamine.

An antibody-based platform for melatonin quantification

Abstract:Melatonin, the 'chemical signal of darkness', is responsible to regulate biological rhythms and different physiological processes. It is mainly produced by the pineal gland as a hormone in a rhythmic daily basis, but it may also be synthesized by other tissues, such as immune cells, under inflammatory conditions. Its abnormal circulating levels have been related to several diseases such as type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer's disease and some types of cancer. Currently, melatonin is exclusively quantified by ELISA or radioimmunoassays, which although are very sensitive techniques and present low detection limits, usually require specialized personal and equipment, restricting the tests to a limited number of patients. To overcome such limitations, we developed a novel easy-to-use electrochemical immunosensor for rapid melatonin quantification. Anti-melatonin antibodies were immobilized into Indium tin oxide (ITO) platforms using (3-Aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES), 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)carbodiimide (EDC) and N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) crosslinkers. The platforms were assayed with synthetic and biologically-present melatonin containing samples. The developed device displayed a linear response in the concentration range from 0.75 to 7.5 μmol/L and a limit of detection of 0.175 μmol/L using Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) (R2 = 0.989) and 0.513 μmol/L using Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) (R² = 0.953) for synthetic melatonin. Furthermore, the sensors exhibited a good stability and reproducibility (3.45% and 2.87% for EIS and CV, respectively, n = 3), maintaining adequate response even after 30 days of assembly. On biologically-present melatonin-containing samples the device displayed a similar performance when compared to ELISA technique (deviation of 13.31%). We expect that the developed device contributes significantly to the medical area allowing precise and complete diagnosis of the diseases related to abnormal levels of melatonin.

Abstract:A new kind of electrochemical sensor based on the MXene & MOF composite-modified carbon cloth was prepared firstly by self-assembly through hydrogen bonds, and then by air-annealing process for detection. The preparation processing introduced chemical bonds between MXene and MOF, which remarkably enhanced the electron transfer ability. Accordingly, combing the unique features of MXene and MOF themselves, the novel electrochemical sensor exhibited exceptional performance to detect tanshinol. Via differential pulse voltammetry, we could obtain a linear tanshinol concentration range of 0.08–8 μM and the limit of detection is 0.034 μM. Furthermore, this developed electrochemical sensor could determine concentrations of tanshinol in real Chinese herbal samples, confirming its practicability and reliability.

Abstract:Serotonin (5-HT) is a neurotransmitter involved in various pathological and physiological processes. The development of novel electrochemical sensor is of significant interest for effective measurement of 5-HT in pharmaceutical and disease diagnosis applications. In this work, two-dimensional iron vanadate nanoflakes (FeVO 4 NFs) supported on Ti 3 C 2 MXene hybrid nanocomposites was fabricated for the ultrasensitive and highly selective electrochemical detection of (5-HT). The morphology and crystalline phase of the as-synthesized nanocomposites was analyzed by various characterization techniques. The morphological studies of the hybrid nanocomposites reveals that FeVO 4 NFs are uniformly decorated on the Ti 3 C 2 MXene surface. Differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) characterization of FeVO 4 @Ti 3 C 2 MXene on screen printed carbon electrode (SPCE) exhibits enhanced electrochemical activity towards 5-HT oxidation. Under optimized conditions, FeVO 4 @Ti 3 C 2 MXene (SPCE) reveals a linear concentration of 25 to 750 nM, with a detection limit of 5.88 nM towards the determination of (5-HT) and the calculated sensitivity of 3.0 μA μM −1 cm −2 . In addition, the fabricated electrochemical biosensor delivers excellent stability, selectivity and reproducibility with the existence of interfering active compounds enabling the detection of 5-HT. Furthermore, the FeVO 4 @ Ti 3 C 2 MXene (SPCE) biosensor displays satisfactory results in real sample analysis such as human serum.

Abstract:Rapid and effective detection of potent volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at low operating temperatures is of great significance to keep humans safe from these environmental pollutants. In this work, we show the facile synthesis of two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D)-laminated SnO2 nanomaterials that are decorated with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and their efficient chemosensing properties for the potent VOC triethylamine (TEA). The as-prepared hybrid material (rGO/SnO2) possesses p-n-type heterojunction and mesoporous structures that are composed of self-assembled SnO2 nanoparticles. The heterojunction between rGO and SnO2 in this hybrid material can be tuned by varying the relative amount of rGO in it. Because of its 3D/2D structures and p-n heterojunction, the material exhibits better carrier mobility, electron transfer, activation energy, and mass diffusion for chemosensing processes than pristine SnO2. It also shows excellent chemosensing properties for TEA, with high response and selectivity at low operating temperatures, while remaining stable and operational for 13 days. Its detection limit for TEA, for example, can reach as low as 358 ppb. These attributes make this material a promising TEA chemosensor for practical applications.

Abstract:Rutin, as a biological flavonoid glycoside, has very important medicinal value. The accurate and rapid detection of rutin is of great significance. Herein, an ultrasensitive electrochemical rutin sensor based on β-cyclodextrin metal–organic framework/reduced graphene oxide (β-CD-Ni-MOF-74/rGO) was constructed. The obtained β-CD-Ni-MOF-74 was characterized by X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and nitrogen adsorption and desorption. The β-CD-Ni-MOF-74/rGO presented good electrochemical properties benefiting from the large specific surface area and good adsorption enrichment effect of β-CD-Ni-MOF-74 and the good conductivity of rGO. Under optimal conditions for the detection of rutin, the β-CD-Ni-MOF-74/rGO/GCE showed a wider linear range (0.06–1.0 μM) and lower detection limit (LOD, 0.68 nM, (S/N = 3)). Furthermore, the sensor shows good accuracy and stability for the detection of rutin in actual samples.

Abstract:In this review paper we discussed the detection of melatonin and serotonin by using various optical methods. Melatonin and serotonin are very necessary body hormones these are also called neuroregulatory hormones secreted by pineal gland in brain by pinealocytes and shape of pineal gland is cone like. Sensitive detection of melatonin and serotonin in pharmacological samples and human serum is crucial for human beings, lots of research publications available in literature for melatonin and serotonin and we overviewed these papers. We have deeply reviewed many research papers where sensitively sensing of melatonin and serotonin occurs, by using of various interfering agents and nanomaterials. This review aims presenting colorimetry, fluorometry and spectrophotometric detection of melatonin (MEL) and serotonin (SER) by using different metal oxides, carbon nanomaterials (nanosheets, nanorods, nanofibers) and many other agents. Nanomaterials typically possess favourable optical, electrical and mechanical characteristics, they provide up new avenues for enhancing the efficacy of sensors. It is crucial to provide an optical sensors platform that is dependable, sensitive and low price. The development of sensors and biosensors to use nanomaterials for neurotransmitters has advanced significantly in recent years. There are currently many developing biomarkers in biological fluids, and bionanomaterial-based biosensor systems, as well as clinical and pharmacological settings, have garnered significant interest. Biomarkers have been found using optical devices in a quick, selective and sensitive manner. Our aim is to compile all the data that already published on MEL, SER sensing and comparison of each method, we mainly focused on principle, observations, sensitivity, selectivity, limit of detection, mechanism behind the reaction, effect of temperature, pH and concentration. In the last of this paper, we discuss some challenges of these methods and future projects.
