Abstract:Analyses all global top 500 companies' configurations and performance outcomes. Geographical niche players’ Return on Capital Employed (RoCEs) fell, however, becoming worst overall. As companies gained more internationalisation experience, they appear to have shifted to more ambitious global configurations, thereby achieving better 5-year RoCEs. In diversified financials, food & retailing, household & personal products, materials, pharmaceuticals & biotechnology, and technology hardware, worldwide players included best, but also worst RoCE performances. Quasi-global shaper (QG) players performed exceptionally well in household & personal products, materials, retail, pharmaceuticals/biotechnology, and technology hardware sectors. Materials and technology hardware by contrast were notably inconsistent, in that worldwide technology specialists were certainly not the most profitable; and transport was notably inconsistent, in that geographical niche players were not the least profitable. Opportunistic international challengers, though, performed best in insurance and country-centred players in banks and telecommunication services. Chinese companies grew strikingly faster, especially when pursuing quasi-global and country-centred configurations.
