Abstract:Increased environmental pollution and the shortage of the current fossil fuel energy supply has increased the demand for eco-friendly energy sources. Hydrogen energy has become a potential solution due to its availability and green combustion byproduct. Hydrogen feedstock materials like sodium borohydride (NaBH4) are promising sources of hydrogen; however, the rate at which the hydrogen is released during its reaction with water is slow and requires a stable catalyst. In this study, gold nanoparticles were deposited onto mesoporous carbon to form a nano-composite catalyst (AuNP-MCM), which was then characterized via transmission electron microscopy (TEM), powder X-ray diffraction (P-XRD), and scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS). The composite's catalytic ability in a hydrogen evolution reaction was tested under varying conditions, including NaBH4 concentration, pH, and temperature, and it showed an activation of energy of 30.0 kJ mol-1. It was determined that the optimal reaction conditions include high NaBH4 concentrations, lower pH, and higher temperatures. This catalyst, with its stability and competitively low activation energy, makes it a promising material for hydrogen generation.

Abstract:In this work, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) supporting finely dispersed Au nanoparticles is developed as a simple and efficient photocatalyst for H2O2 production under visible light irradiation. Au nanoparticle cocatalyst remarkably enhances photocatalytic activity of C3N4 for H2O2 production. Due to the inert nature to catalyze the decomposition of H2O2, Au/C3N4 also exhibits stable H2O2 evolution rate. It is of great interest that the maximal H2O2 production activity is reached at the loading amount of Au as low as 0.01%, revealing the great catalytic efficacy of highly dispersed Au cocatalyst during the photocatalytic H2O2 synthesis and the possibility to produce concentrated H2O2 using C3N4 with extremely low Au loading amount. The in situ electron spin resonance studies reveal that the H2O2 is produced through direct 2e− oxygen reduction over Au/C3N4 photocatalyst.

Abstract:The development of single-atom catalysts (SACs) offers a novel strategy to minimize catalyst loadings while maintaining high electrocatalytic activity. Herein, a novel Ni/Ni single atom anchored porous graphitic nanocarbon (Ni/Ni -SA –NC) is synthesized by an alkali-assisted etching approach combined with post-calcination protocol. It is manifested that the in situ formed AlN not only can function as a template for the generation of porous nanoarchitecture but can also serve as an anchoring agent for synthesized Ni–N x species. Benefitting from the high specific surface area, abundant electroactive sites, and highly conductive graphitic carbon matrix, the fabricated Ni/Ni -SA –NC displays superior HER performances with a quite low overpotential of 159 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , far outperforming the Ni/C counterpart and long-term stability for over 50 h with unnoticeable current fluctuation in alkaline medium. Our work inspires the exploration of remarkable SACs electrocatalysts for cost-effective and large-scale hydrogen production in the energy conversion and storage field.

Abstract:Enhancing the separation and transfer of photogenerated carries is vital for improving the efficiency of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ). Herein, a carbon-rich g-C 3 N 4 with nitrogen vacancies (CCN4) was constructed by incorporating the biochar into g-C 3 N 4 during a thermal polymerization in N 2 atmosphere. The doped carbon atoms replaced the bridged nitrogen and increased the delocalization π states. The synergy of the enhanced π states and nitrogen vacancy favored to narrow the bandgap and accelerate the charge separation and migration in catalyst. Meanwhile, the CCN4 catalyst had a favorable kinetics for HER with simpler steps and lower energy barrier than the PCN sample, in which H 2 production from *H is prior to OH generation. The CCN4 catalyst exhibited excellent HER activity with a hydrogen evolution rate of 3342.4 μmol g −1 h −1 with 0.5 wt% cocatalyst Pt, which was 5.1 times higher than that of pristine g-C 3 N 4 (PCN). Additionally, CCN4 exhibited good resistance to salt with the concentration near natural seawater, showing the further improved hydrogen evolution rate of 3808.8 μmol g −1 h −1 . The findings reported in this work shed light on a biochar-tailored protocol to control the defects of g-C 3 N 4 and optimize its intrinsic electronic properties and photocatalytic HER.

Abstract:Hydrogen generation photocatalyzed by low-cost graphite carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is a fascinating and effective route to solve energy crisis, but is mainly limited by the few reactive sites, low carrier separation efficiency and mediocre visible-light utilization. In this work, these limitations were tackled through a facile eco-friendly precursor pretreatment by tuning bulk g-C3N4 into porous structure. This pretreatment restricted agglomeration in the subsequent condensation and created more porous channels for charge carrier transfer and more surface active sites for reaction. The modified g-C3N4 has larger surface area, broader visible-light response, enhanced electron migration capacity and prolonged lifetime of photogenerated carriers. These well-amended g-C3N4 nanosheets possess an average hydrogen evolution rate 5.7 times that of bulk g-C3N4. This work affords a facile, eco-friendly and scalable strategy to design or synthesize other porous materials.

Abstract:The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is an emerging renewable energy source to derive clean, efficient, and high-energy-density hydrogen fuel from electrochemical water splitting mostly by using traditional noble-metal-based catalysts. However, their scarcity has led to the emergence of carbon-based materials which are exceptionally promising alternatives for the HER. Herein, graphene capsules-decorated boron–carbon–nitride sheets are developed by pyrolyzing a mixture of pyridine borane and custom-made GCs. The 3D hollow GCs effectively increase the surface area to supplement more exposed active sites for the hydrogen adsorption/desorption reaction. The carbon-rich ternary hybrid structure favors adjusting the electrical conductivity, which provides better HER catalytic performances (overpotential of 333 mV at 10 mA cm–2) in acidic conditions. Abstract:Developing cost-effective and efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts for hydrogen production is of paramount importance to attain a sustainable energy future. Reported herein is a novel three-dimensional hierarchical architectured electrocatalyst, consisting of platinum-copper-nickel nanoparticles-decorated carbon nanofiber arrays, which are conformally assembled on carbon felt fabrics (PtCuNi/CNF@CF) by an ambient-pressure chemical vapor deposition coupled with a spontaneous galvanic replacement reaction. The free-standing PtCuNi/CNF@CF monolith exhibits high porosities, a well-defined geometry shape, outstanding electron conductivity, and a unique characteristic of localizing platinum-copper-nickel nanoparticles in the tips of carbon nanofibers. Such features render PtCuNi/CNF@CF as an ideal binder-free HER electrode for hydrogen production. Electrochemical measurements demonstrate that the PtCuNi/CNF@CF possesses superior intrinsic activity as well as mass-specific activity in comparison with the state-of-the-art Pt/C catalysts, both in acidic and alkaline solutions. With well-tuned composition of active nanoparticles, Pt42Cu57Ni1/CNF@CF showed excellent durability. The synthesis strategy reported in this work is likely to pave a new route for fabricating free-standing hierarchical electrodes for electrochemical devices.
Structural and electronic engineering of Co‐doped Ni3C nanoparticles encapsulated in ultrathin carbon layers for hydrogen evolution reaction

Abstract:With resurgent interest in green hydrogen as a key element in the transition to a renewable‐energy economy, developing efficient, earth‐abundant, and low‐cost catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is becoming increasingly important but is still very challenging. Herein, we report the synthesis of Co‐doped Ni3C nanoparticles encapsulated in ultrathin carbon layers (CNCC) by in‐situ thermal decomposition of organic‐inorganic hybrid as high‐performance HER electrocatalysts. Experimental and density functional theory studies evidence that the substantial high‐index (113) surfaces in synergy with a few atomic carbon layers contribute significantly to the activity and stability, while the electronic structure of Ni3C is optimized through tuning the Co content to enhance the intrinsic kinetics for HER. The CNCC exhibits excellent HER activities with overpotentials at 10 mA cm−2 (η10) of 102 and 69 mV and Tafel slopes of 74 and 43 mV dec‐1 in respective neutral and alkaline media along with a superior stability without noticeable decay up to 100 h. More importantly, the CNCC outperforms the benchmark Pt/C catalyst under high current density (> 38 mA cm‐2) in an alkaline electrolyte, showing great potential for practical hydrogen production.

Abstract:The development of new promising metal-free catalysts is of great significance for the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, a rationally assembled three-dimensional (3D) architecture of 1D graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) nanoribbons with 2D graphene sheets has been developed by a one-step hydrothermal method. Because of the multipathway of charge and mass transport, the hierarchically structured g-C3N4 nanoribbon-graphene hybrids lead to a high electrocatalytic ability for HER with a Tafel slope of 54mVdecade(-1), a low onset overpotential of 80mV and overpotential of 207mV to approach a current of 10mAcm(-2), superior to those non-metal materials and well-developed metallic catalysts reported previously. This work presents a great advance for designing and developing highly efficient metal-free catalyst for hydrogen evolution.

Abstract:The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) may contribute substantially to energy resources in the future through solar energy conversion. In this study, mesoporous graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) layers modified by detonation nanodiamond (DND) were synthesized by condensation from urea to obtain a robust and efficient hybrid (g-C3N4-DND) photocatalyst for the HER. Our characterizations revealed that no significant structural changes occurred in g-C3N4 during the synthesis of the g-C3N4-DND hybrid. Compared with pure g-C3N4, hydrogen production increased by almost 50% when using the hybrid photocatalyst due to the synergetic effect of the enhanced charge transfer, high surface area and low recombination rate of the photogenerated charge carriers.

Abstract:The availability of low-cost noble-metal-free photocatalyst is vital for sustainable and large-scale hydrogen production. Herein, N-doped-carbon coated Co3W3C nanocrystallines (NC-Co3W3C), a novel cocatalyst, are anchored onto g-C3N4, forming a (NC-Co3W3C@g-C3N4) composite photocatalyst for application in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Under visible light irradiation, NC-Co3W3C@g-C3N4 photocatalyst shows a remarkable photocatalytic HER rate of 1332 μmol h−1 g−1, achieving 148 times higher than pristine g-C3N4 photocatalyst and 89.22% as high as Pt/g-C3N4 photocatalyst (the expensive noble-metal-based catalyst). The mechanism investigation via systematic experimental and theoretical analysis (Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculation) suggests that the high photocatalytic efficiency could be attributed to boosted light absorption and accelerated HER kinetic that is resulted from the enhanced conducitity, reinforced stability, and the suitable H adsorption free energy introduced by the cocatalyst. This work suggests the construction of highly efficient catalyst for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution is chemically and economically viable for the green hydrogen economy.

Abstract:As a promising metal-free photocatalyst, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is still limited by insufficient visible light absorption and rapid recombination of photogenerated carriers, resulting in low photocatalytic activity. Here, we adjusted the microstructure of the pristine bulk-g-C3N4 (PCN) and further loaded silver (Ag) nanoparticles. Abundant Ag nanoparticles were grown on the thin-layer g-C3N4 nanosheets (CNNS), and the Ag nanoparticles decorated g-C3N4 nanosheets (Ag@CNNS) were successfully synthesized. The thin-layer nanosheet-like structure was not only beneficial for the loading of Ag nanoparticles but also for the adsorption and activation of reactants via exposing more active sites. Moreover, the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect induced by Ag nanoparticles enhanced the absorption of visible light by narrowing the band gap of the substrate. Meanwhile, the composite band structure effectively promoted the separation and transfer of carriers. Benefiting from these merits, the Ag@CNNS reached a superior hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) yield of 120.53 μmol/g/h under visible light irradiation in pure water (about 8.0 times higher than that of PCN), significantly surpassing most previous reports. The design method of manipulating the microstructure of the catalyst combined with the modification of metal nanoparticles provides a new idea for the rational development and application of efficient photocatalysts.

Abstract:Photocatalytic hydrogen production is regarded as an ideal strategy to solve energy issues. Graphene phase carbon nitrogen compound (g-C3N4) is commonly used to prepare improved photocatalysts due to its typical structural advantages. However, it generally presents low photostability of functional cocatalysts (e.g. precious metals) for simple 2D-layered structure of 2D g-C3N4. Herein, graphene oxide (GO) is applied to construct 3D porous g-C3N4/GO (p-CNG) skeleton via a thermal treatment aiding by template technique. Then, precious-metal (Au, Pd, Pt) cocatalysts were respectively immobilized to the 3D p-CNG skeleton to construct the 3D p-CNG-M (Au, Pd, Pt) composite catalysts. The typical 3D porous structure and bonding interaction between g-C3N4 and GO increase the specific surface area and improve the anchoring stability of cocatalysts. Meanwhile, precious-metal cocatalysts acted as the electron acceptors remarkably increase the active sites and promote the electron-hole separation. Thereby, the resultant 3D p-CNG-M composite catalysts present remarkably enhanced hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activities under simulated solar light (SSL), and the optimal 3D p-CNG-Pt composite catalyst possesses the prominent HER activity (2565.81 μmol g-1 h-1) at pH = 10.5 for the stronger cocatalyst-support interaction, which is about 136-fold greater of 3D p-CNG skeleton (18.93 μmol g-1 h-1). Furthermore, its AQY is about 21.6% under illumination (λ =420 nm). Especially, the excellent durability and reproducibility were achieved during long time photoinduction and multi-recycling. This study provides a potential strategy for enhancing the photostability and improving the SSL-induced HER performance of precious-metal modified photocatalyst.

Abstract:Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ), as a carbon support material with excellent stability and abundant active sites, has found widespread applications in various fields, including photocatalytic water splitting, electrolysis of water, and CO 2 reduction. Presently, research on the modification of g-C 3 N 4 primarily focuses on atomic doping, defect engineering, and the decoration of metal nanoparticles. In this study, a method involving the high-temperature pyrolysis of a solution containing thiourea and urea was successfully employed to synthesize sulfur-doped porous g-C 3 N 4 (S-C 3 N 4 ) nanosheets. Subsequently, PtCu nanoparticles were loaded onto the S-C 3 N 4 through a hydrothermal process. In the case of Pt loading of less than half of 20% Pt/C, this catalyst exhibited a low overpotential of only 10 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , which is significantly better than the 35 mV overpotential of 20% Pt/C. Furthermore, after a long period of continuous current stability testing, the overpotential of the catalyst did not increase by more than 30 mV, demonstrating excellent stability. The porous S-C 3 N 4 nanosheets possess a large specific surface area, providing abundant active sites for the HER reaction. This research introduces a fresh method for creating innovative catalysts based on Pt alloys supported by a carbon carrier.

Abstract:FeNi@NG/NCM@MoS2 hybrid is prepared, using a simple hydrothermal method. The synthesized composite is stable with improved catalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance. Besides, density functional theory calculations validate this enhanced catalytic HER performance of the catalyst and envisage that it is due to electron transformation, from FeNi alloy to NG surface of FeNi@NG particle, and then to MoS2 nanosheets. Synthesis of noble‐metal‐free electrocatalysts for green hydrogen production is crucial to overcoming the energy demand of modern society. One of the most competitive and alternative noble‐metal‐free electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is molybdenum disulfide (MoS2)‐based composites. Herein, it is shown that MoS2 nanosheets grow on FeNi@N‐doped graphene nanoparticles/N‐doped carbon matrix (FeNi@NG/NCM@MoS2), using the hydrothermal method. FeNi@NG/NCM@MoS2 hybrid displays outstanding HER performance with a low overpotential of 79 mV at 10 mA cm−2, a small Tafel slope of 40.2 mV dec−1, and high durability. First‐principles density functional theory simulations confirm the electron transformation from FeNi alloy to NG surface of FeNi@NG particle and subsequently further transfer to MoS2 nanosheets, which decrease the Gibbs free energy (ΔGH* ≈ −0.08 eV) and local work function for enhanced HER activities. This work highlights the understanding of electron transfer in demonstrating the kinetic reaction of the HER process and offers a new avenue for constructing efficient MoS2‐based electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Transition metal carbides (TMC) modified by mesoporous carbon nanosheets (MCNSs) with high activity, fast electron/ion transfer and long durability are considered as promising electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, most current synthesis methods involve in multistep, long duration and low output. In this work, Cr3C2, WC and VC nanoparticles embedded in mesoporous carbon nanosheets (TMC-NPs@MCNSs) were fabricated via a template-free and time-saving route by solution combustion synthesis. All TMC-NPs@MCNSs displayed good electrocatalytic activity for HER, and the Tafel plots of Cr3C2-NPs@MCNS, VC-NPs@MCNS and WC-NPs@MCNS electrocatalysts were 85, 77 and 56 mV·dec−1, respectively. WC-NPs@MCNSs exhibited lower Tafel slope and overpotentials of 137 mV at ŋ10 (a current density of 10 mA·cm−2), which could be ascribed to mesoporous structure, smaller particles size and strong electron interaction between W and C that promoted electron/ion transfer, maintained the structure integrity and enhanced the HER activity.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Electrolyzers and fuel cells have been extensively investigated as promising solutions for renewable energy storage and conversion. Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are important electrocatalytic processes in electrolyzers and fuel cells. Exploring efficient non-precious metal catalysts for HER and ORR in acidic medium remains a great challenge. Herein, we report that graphene-supported iron-based nanoparticles encapsulated in a nitrogen-doped carbon (Fe@N-C) hybrid material acts as an efficient HER and ORR catalyst. The hybrid material was synthesized by pyrolysis of graphene oxide and ammonia ferric citrate followed by acid-leaching. During the pyrolysis, nitrogen was doped into a graphene lattice, and the carbon nanoshell grown on graphene effectively suppressed the stacking of graphene sheets, exposing more active sites to reactants. The hybrid material showed higher electrocatalytic activities than graphene sheets or Fe@N-C alone, which is probably attributed to the synergetic role of nitrogen-doped graphene and Fe@N-C towards the electrocatalytic reactions.

Abstract:Fabricating a cost effective hydrogen evolution reaction catalyst without using precious metal elements is in crucial demand for environmentally-benign energy production. In this work, the thin and edge-rich molybdenum disulfide nanosheets, with carbon doped in the interlayers and decorated on graphene, were developed by a facile solvothermal process. The as-synthesized nanohybrids exhibited high catalytic ability for the hydrogen evolution electrochemical reaction with an onset overpotential of 0.165 mV and a Tafel slope of 46 mV dec(-1). Furthermore, the prepared nanohybrids also showed better durability and stability. Our work may lead to a potential method for in situ production of metal carbide-sulphur hybrid nanomaterials with promising applications for the hydrogen evolution reaction.
