Abstract:This study investigated the effects of multi-enzyme supplementation on various aspects of laying hens, including laying performance, egg quality, intestinal health and digestive function. In total, 384 Jingfen No.6 laying hens at 65-week-age were randomly assigned to four distinct dietary treatments: a basal diet (CON), CON supplemented with 150 g/t multi-enzyme (T1), CON with 300 g/t multi-enzyme (T2), and 600 g/t multi-enzyme (T3). A significant linear (P = 0.044) and quadratic (P = 0.014) increase was observed in the laying rate, while the feed/egg ratio exhibited a linear (P = 0.001) and quadratic (P < 0.001) decrease with increasing multi-enzyme supplementation. Additionally, linear (P < 0.05) and quadratic (P < 0.05) increases were observed in yolk rate and haugh unit with increasing levels of multi-enzyme supplementation. The trypsin activity in the duodenum and crude protein digestibility showed linear (P < 0.05) and quadratic (P < 0.05) increase with the addition of multi-enzyme. Furthermore, lipase and amylase activities in the duodenum increased quadratically (P = 0.041) and linearly (P = 0.040), respectively. Both jejunal and ileal digesta viscosities showed linear (P < 0.05) and quadratic (P < 0.05) decrease with the increasing addition of multi-enzyme. Moreover, multi-enzyme supplementation significantly increased (P < 0.05) the number of goblet cells in the intestinal of the treatment groups. The mRNA expression of Occludin-1, mucin 2 (MUC-2), large neutral amino acids transporter small subunit 1 (LAT-1) in the jejunum were significantly increased (P < 0.05) in the treatment groups (T1, T2 and T3) compared to the CON group. Additionally, the mRNA expression of solute carrier family 6-member 19 (B0AT-1) and large neutral amino acids transporter small subunit 4 (LAT-4) were significantly evaluated (P < 0.05) in the T2 and T3 groups, respectively. In conclusion, multi-enzyme supplementation enhanced digestive enzyme activities and intestinal barrier function, reduced intestinal digesta viscosity, and regulated mRNA expression of intestinal amino acid and lipid transporter genes, thereby improving crude protein digestibility and positively affecting laying performance and egg quality in hens.
Effect of Expanded Cottonseed Meal on Laying Performance, Egg Quality, Concentrations of Free Gossypol in Tissue, Serum and Egg of Laying Hens

Abstract:Three hundred and sixty Hy-Line Brown hens, 40 week of age, were allocated to five treatments, each of which included four replicates of 18 hens. After an expanded process of cottonseed meal (CSM), free gossypol content in CSM was decreased from 1.24 to 0.40 g/kg. The dietary treatments were corn-soybean meal based diets including 6% CSM and 6%, 8% and 10% expanded cottonseed meal (ECSM). Hens fed 8% ECSM had higher (P<0.05) laying rate and average egg weight than those fed 6% CSM. The albumen height and Haugh unit in the control group, 6% and 8% ECSM groups were superior (P<0.05) to other treatments. Hens fed 6% CSM resulted in severe (P<0.05) egg yolk discoloration. Free gossypol (FG) concentrations in yolk and albumen and tissues of the 6% CSM group were greater (P<0.05) than those in any ECSM treatments. Hens fed 6% CSM and 10% ECSM had the highest (P<0.05) FG concentrations in the liver compared with those in the kidney and muscle, and higher (P<0.05) FG residues in yolk than those in albumen. In conclusion, FG in CSM can be reduced by 68% through an expanded process and ECSM can be available in laying hens at up to 10% of the total diet and an appropriate replacement of soybean meal with ECSM may improve performance in laying hens.
Effects of High Fiber Ingredients with Enzyme/Phytoadditive Addition on Laying Hens Productive Performances, Egg Nutritional Quality and Intestinal Morphology

Abstract:Abstract Fibre inclusion in laying hen diets it is considered a solution to reduce feed formulation costs by improving nutrients absorption and metabolization within the gastrointestinal tract. A 5-wk study was conducted on 200, Tetra SL layers (28 weeks) randomly allocated in 5 groups (C, E1, E2, E3, E4, respectively), with initial average weights of 1732.26±109.35 g/hen, housed (4 hens/cage; 10 cages/group; 40 hens/group). All groups had the same basic feed compound structure (corn, oil, soybean meal and sunflower meal). The conventional diet (C group) contained 2780 kcal/kg Metabolizable energy (ME); 17.5% Crude protein (CP); 4.39% Crude fibre (CF). The experimental diets added 16.56% sunflower meal and 20% rice bran, increasing the dietary cellulose up to 7%. The fibre digestibility was improved using on E2 (0.015% enzyme); E3 (0.015% phytoadditive) and E4 (0.015% enzyme + 0.015% phytoadditive). The high fibre diets had no negative impact on productive performances and egg quality parameters. Yolk cholesterol significantly decreased (P<0.05) on E1, E3 and E4 groups compared to C, E2 groups. Villi height increased significantly (P<0.05) on E2 group compared to all other groups. In conclusion, the high dietary crude fibre (7%), additional enzymes/phyto additives, can improve the nutrient digestibility and intestinal morphology with beneficial effects on health and egg quality.
An investigation into the influence of fermented cottonseed meal on the productive performance, egg quality, and gut health in laying hens

Abstract:The present study investigates the effects of replacing soybean meal (SBM) with either cottonseed meal (CSM) or fermented cottonseed meal (FCSM) on the productive performance, egg quality, blood biochemistry parameters, gut bacterial population, and small intestinal morphology of laying hens. A total of 648 Hy-Line W36 laying hens aged 40 weeks were randomly assigned to 9 treatments, with 6 replicates each and 12 birds per replicate. The feeding trial lasted 12 weeks. The treatments consisted of a control diet based on corn and SBM, as well as 8 experimental diets in which 7.5, 15, 22.5, and 30% of the SBM in the control diet was replaced with either CSM or FCSM. Laying hens fed diets with different levels of FCSM had higher egg production and egg mass than those fed with CSM diets at weeks 46 to 51 (P < 0.05). Diets containing FCSM also significantly improved the feed conversion ratio at weeks 40 to 45 and 46 to 51 (P < 0.05). Eggshell strength was significantly greater in birds fed diets containing FCSM than those fed other dietary treatments at 51 weeks of age (P < 0.05). Hens fed diets containing FCSM had higher calcium and lower cholesterol in serum than those on other diets (P < 0.05). Replacing SBM with FCSM decreased the egg yolk cholesterol content (P < 0.05). Additionally, feeding diets containing different levels of FCSM increased villus height and villus height to crypt depth in the jejunum (P < 0.05). Diets containing FCSM also reduced pH and coliform population in the ileum, and ceca and increased lactic acid bacteria count in the crop and ceca (P < 0.05). Overall, the present data showed that including FCSM in the diet of laying hens can positively affect productive performance compared to CSM. Moreover, substituting SBM with FCSM, can improve eggshell quality, promote gut health, and reduce egg yolk cholesterol concentration.

Abstract:A total of 384 Roman brown shell laying hens were used to study the effects of increasing dietary inclusion of 0, 30, 60 and 90g/kg of dried broccoli stems and leaves meal (BSLM) on production performance and egg quality. Hens were randomly allocated to four groups with six replicates of 16 chickens. The results showed that dietary supplementation of BSLM had no effect (P>0.05) on production performance of laying hens. Incremental levels of BSLM linearly and quadratically increased the xanthophyll content of egg yolk, the yolk color (P<0.05) and linearly decreased the content of cholesterol in egg yolk (P<0.05). However, supplementation with BSLM had no effect (P>0.05) on albumen height, haugh unit, shell thickness and shell strength of eggs. Hepatic hydroxymethylglutaryl-coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase activity was decreased (P<0.05) and concentrations of cecal short chain fatty acids were increased (P<0.05) linearly and quadratically with increasing BSLM supplementation. The results indicate that supplementation with BSLM in laying hens improves egg quality with more yolk pigmentation and less yolk cholesterol. The decreased cholesterol of the egg fed BSLM may be partly caused by an alteration in the synthesis of cholesterol, which might result from the changes in cecal fermentation.
Dietary replacement of soybean meal by fermented feedstuffs for aged laying hens: effects on laying performance, egg quality, nutrient digestibility, intestinal health, follicle development, and biological parameters in a long-term feeding period

Abstract:This study aimed to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation with fermented soybean meal (FSM) or fermented miscellaneous meal (FMM, cottonseed meal: coconut meal = at a 1:1 ratio) on the intestinal health, laying performance, egg quality, and follicle development of laying hens. A total of 1,008 54-wk-old laying hens were randomly divided into 7 treatment groups and fed a corn-soybean base diet in addition to 2%, 4%, and 8% FSM or FMM. The results showed that fermentation increased the contents of crude protein, amino acids (Ser, Gly, Cys, Leu, Lys, His, and Arg), and organic acids (butyric acid, citric acid, succinic acid) and decreased the contents of neutral and acid detergent fiber in the soybean and miscellaneous meals (P < 0.05). Compared with the results found for the control group, feeding with 4% FSM increased the egg production, egg mass and average daily feed intake (ADFI), and feeding with 4% FMM increased the ADFI of laying hens (P < 0.05). Furthermore, feeding with 8% FMM reduced the productive performance and laying performance, supplementation with 4% FSM increased the eggshell strength and weight, and 2 to 4% FSM increased the egg albumen height and Haugh unit (P < 0.05). Moreover, 2 to 8% FSM or 2 to 4% FMM enhanced the apparent digestibility of dry matter, crude protein, and NDF for laying hens (P < 0.05). The relative weight, villus height, crypt depth, and villus:crypt ratio of the jejunum were higher in the 4% FSM- and FMM-fed groups (P < 0.05). Moreover, diamine oxidase (DAO) activity, transepithelial electrical resistance (TEER), and the expression of tight junction proteins (ZO-1, Occluding, and Claudin1), the intestinal stem cell marker Lgr5, and the proliferation cell marker proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) was upregulated in the jejunum of laying hens fed 4% FSM and FMM (P < 0.05). The relative weight of the ovaries, and the number of small yellow follicles and large white follicles were elevated after 4% FSM or FMM supplementation. Furthermore, the levels of serum follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone were increased in the 4% FSM and FMM groups (P < 0.05). In conclusion, the supplementation of laying hen feed with FSM and FMM improved the laying performance, egg quality, intestinal barrier function, and follicle development of aged laying hens, and 4% FSM supplementation was optimal.

Abstract:This experiment was conducted to study the effects of expanded cottonseed meal on performance,egg quality and serum biochemical indices of laying hens.Three hundred and sixty Hy-Line laying hens,40 weeks old,were randomly divided into 5 groups with 4 replicates per group and 18 hens per replicate.The control group was fed a corn-soybean meal basal diet,trial group 1 was used 6% cottonseed meal instead of soybean meal of the control group diet,and trial groups 2,3,4 were used 6%,8% and 10% expanded cottonseed meal instead of soybean meal,respectively.The experiment lasted for 8 weeks.The results showed as follows: 1) different dietary expanded cottonseed had no significant effect on the performance of laying hens(P>0.05).Compared with the control group,laying rate and average egg weight in trial group 1 were significantly decreased(P<0.05),and feed-egg ratio was significantly increased(P<0.05).2) Dietary cottonseed meal had significant influence on yolk color(P<0.05),but the shell strength and shell thickness were no significantly affected(P>0.05).Albumen height in trial groups 1 and 4 was significantly decreased than that in control group(P<0.05).3) The contents of total protein(TP) and potassium(K) in trial group 1 were significantly lower than those in control group(P<0.05),but the glutamic pyruvic transaminase(GPT) activity was significantly higher than that in control group(P<0.05),the uric acid(UA) content was significantly higher than that in trial group 2(P<0.05).The serum calcium(Ca) content in trial group 4 was significantly lower than that in control group(P<0.05).The contents of TP,Ca and K were decreased with the dietary expanded cottonseed meal levels increasing,but GPT activity was increased,which showed a dose effect.But dietary cottonseed had no significant influence on albumin(ALB) content(P>0.05).In conclusion,diets with 8% expanded cottonseed meal have no negative effect on performance,egg quality and serum biochemical indices of laying hens.Expanding treatment can decrease the harm of free gossypol to laying hens,which can improve the efficiency of cottonseed meal utilization by laying hens.
Sunflower Meal Inclusion Rate and the Effect of Exogenous Enzymes on Growth Performance of Broiler Chickens

Abstract:The study examined the effect of de-hulled sunflower meal (SFM) inclusion rate and exogenous enzymes (EE) on broilers production performance. A four-feeding phase of pre-starter (1–9 d), grower (10–20 d), finisher (21–28 d) and post-finisher (29–35 d) was used with SFM included as low (BSL) and high (BSH) in all phases. BLS inclusion was 3% throughout phases and BSH inclusion was 7.5%, 10%, 13% and 13.5% for the 4-phases. Each SFM had a negative control (NC) (BSL− and BSH−) and positive (PC) (BSL+ and BSH+) control with additional 80 kcal Apparent Metabolizable Energy. Enzymes: xylanase (X), xylanase + beta-glucanase (XB), xylanase + beta-glucanase + protease (XBP) and xylanase + amylase + protease (XAP) were added to the NC and PC to give 6 treatments. Pen body weight gain (BWG) and feed intake (FI) were determined at 9, 20, 28 and 35 d and feed conversion ratio (FCR) was calculated accordingly. Diets were fed ad libitum to 1920 male Ross 308 broilers. Diet type, enzyme and diet by enzyme interactions were not significantly different amongst treatment diets. During the pre-starter and the grower phase, all studied parameters did not significantly differ from each other. All studied parameters were significantly influenced by enzyme addition and diet-type and enzyme interaction at 35 d except for diet type on FCR. Broilers fed BSH supplemented with XAP recorded the highest BWG (2.69 kg), whereas broiler chickens on BSL and supplemented with XBP recorded the lowest BWG (2.60 kg). SFM can be increased to 13% and 13.5% finisher and post-finisher diets without negatively affecting performance, and X and XAP enzymes can improve BWG of broilers grown to 35 d.

Abstract:This study was conducted to investigate the effects of different dietary energy and crude protein lev-els on performance, egg quality and serum biochemical indices of Xinyang green shell laying hens during late stage of egg production ( 44 to 56 weeks of age) , and to obtain the optimum energy and protein proportion for them. A total of 768 Xinyang green shell laying hens at the end of 43 weeks of age were randomly allocated to 6 groups, each of which included 4 replicates of 32 hens. A 2×3 factorial design with two levels of metaboliza-ble energy ( ME:10. 87 and 11. 08 MJ/kg) and three levels of crude protein ( CP:15. 00%, 15. 50% and 16.00%) was used in this experiment to prepare 6 different diets. The pre-trial period was one week, and the trial period was 12 weeks. The results showed as follows:1) different dietary ME and CP levels had significant effects on laying rate and the ratio of feed to egg ( F/E) of Xinyang green shell laying hens during late stage of egg production ( P<0.05) . The interaction between ME and CP level was significant on laying rate ( P<0.01) . The laying rate was the highest and the F/E was the lowest in high energy and low protein group with 11.08 MJ/kg ME and 15.00% CP. 2) Dietary 16.00% CP level significantly increased Haugh unit ( P<0.05) and dietary 11.08 MJ/kg ME level significantly increased yolk color ( P<0.05) of eggs of Xinyang green shell laying hens during late stage of egg production. There was no interaction between ME and CP level on egg quality ( P>0.05) . 3) Serum urea nitrogen content was the lowest in high energy and low protein group. Dieta-ry 11.08 MJ/kg ME level significantly decreased serum total cholesterol content of green shell laying hens ( P<0.05). In summary, under the conditions of this experiment, dietary 11.08 MJ/kg ME and 15.00% CP can benefit to increase performance and promote egg quality of Xinyang green shell laying hens during late stage of egg production.

Abstract:This study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary ME and CP levels on laying performance, egg quality and serum biochemical indices of Fengda-1 layers. In a 2 × 3 factorial arrangement, 2,400 Fengda-1 layers (32 wk of age) were randomly assigned to 6 experimental diets with 2,650 and 2,750 kcal of ME/kg of diet, each containing 14.50%, 15.00% and 15.50% CP, respectively. Each dietary treatment was replicated 5 times, and feed and water were provided ad libitum. The trial lasted for 10 wk, including a 2-week acclimation period and an 8-week experimental period. Our results showed that ADFI decreased as the ME level of diet increased from 2,650 to 2,750 kcal/kg (P < 0.05). Layers fed diets with 2,750 kcal/kg ME exhibited higher mortality than those fed with 2,650 kcal/kg ME (P < 0.05). Birds fed with 14.50% and 15.00% CP had higher egg production (EP) and egg mass (EM) than those fed with 15.50% CP (P < 0.05). Yolk color increased as the ME level of the diet increased from 2,650 to 2,750 kcal/kg, however, the eggshell thickness decreased (P < 0.05). Serum concentrations of uric acid and triglyceride in layers fed diets with 2,750 kcal/kg ME were higher than those fed diets with 2,650 kcal/kg ME (P < 0.05). There was no significant interaction between ME and CP on laying performance, egg quality, or serum biochemical indices (P > 0.05). Based on the data under the experimental conditions, the optimal dietary ME and CP levels of Fengda-1 layers are 2,650 kcal/kg and 15.00% (33 to 41 wk of age).
Fermented soybean meal improved laying performance and egg quality of laying hens by modulating cecal microbiota, nutrient digestibility, intestinal health, antioxidant and immunological functions

Abstract:Antinutritional factors in feedstuffs may limit their utilization in livestock production, but fermentation process can be used to improve feed quality; however, studies on fermented soybeans for laying hens remain limited. We investigated the effect of fermented soybean meal (FSBM) at various inclusion levels as a partial replacement for soybean meal (SBM) on egg production, egg quality, amino acid digestibility, gut morphology and microbiota, antioxidant capacity and immune response of young laying hens. A total of 360 Hy-line Brown laying hens aged 18 weeks were selected and divided into 5 groups of 6 replicates each and 12 birds per replicate. The control group received a basal diet while the trial group received the basal diet with FSBM included at 2.5%, 5.0%, 7.5% and 10.0%, respectively, for 12 weeks. Our findings revealed that the nutritional value of FSBM was higher compared to that of SBM in terms of reduced content of trypsin inhibitors and increased contents of crude protein, amino acids and minerals. FSBM enhanced egg production (P < 0.05), feed-to-egg ratio (P < 0.05), and albumen quality (albumen height and Haugh unit) (P < 0.05). Furthermore, FSBM improved apparent fecal amino acid digestibility (P < 0.05), gut morphology (increased villus height, villus width, villus height-to-crypt depth ratio and decreased crypt depth) (P < 0.05), antioxidant capacity (reduced malondialdehyde and increased catalase, total superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase and total antioxidant capacity) (P < 0.05) and immune function (increased concentrations of IgG, IgA, and IgM; increased levels of transforming growth factor beta and Toll-like receptor 2; and reduced levels of interleukin 1β and tumor necrosis factor alpha) (P < 0.05). Further analysis showed that FSBM altered the composition of the gut microbiota favoring beneficial microbes. These findings suggest that probiotic fermentation improved the nutritional value of SBM. The inclusion of FSBM in the diets of laying hens at 2.5% or 5.0% improved amino acid digestibility, gut health, immune function, egg production and egg quality.

Abstract:Two experiments were conducted to test the feeding value of fermented cottonseed meal (FCSM) in broilers. In experiment 1, 480 1-day-old male yellow-feathered broilers were allocated into 4 dietary treatments with 6 replicates (20 birds per replicate) to examine the effects of FCSM on the growth response of chickens. Experimental feeding was performed for 6 weeks in two phases (starter, days 0 to 21; finisher, days 22 to 42). FCSM was used at 0, 40, 80, and 120 g/kg levels to replace soybean meal in the basal diet. The dietary inclusion of 40 and 80 g/kg FCSM increased (quadratic (Q): p < 0.01) the body weight gain of broilers in the starter and in the overall feeding periods. Experiment 2 determined the effect of FCSM on the cecal microbial populations, intestinal morphology, and digestive enzyme activity of broilers. The number of lactobacilli in the cecal digesta increased at day 21 (p < 0.01) and day 42 (linear (L): p = 0.01). Coliform bacteria counts decreased (L: p < 0.05) with the increasing inclusion of FCSM at day 21. The inclusion of FCSM increased (L-Q: p < 0.05) villus height in the duodenum and linearly elevated (p < 0.05) villus height and the villus height to crypt depth ratio in the jejunum at day 21. Similar improvement (L: p < 0.05) was noted in jejunal villus height at day 42. The inclusion of FCSM improved (p < 0.05) the activities of amylase and protease at day 21, as well as protease at day 42. In conclusion, the appropriate inclusion of FCSM improves growth, cecal microflora, intestinal morphology, and digestive enzyme activity in yellow-feathered broilers.

Abstract:Echocardiographic studies of 11 patients with Marfan's syndrome showed that in all adult patients aortic root diameters were larger than 35 mm (normal range 24 to 35, mean 30+/-2 mm). Prolapse of the mitral valve was present in seven of 11 patients. There was no relationship between the degree of aortic root enlargement and the presence of prolapse. However, in five of seven patients with prolapse there were premature ventricular contractions recorded during the echocardiogram or on a separate electrocardiogram. In four patients without prolapse, no premature atrial or ventricular contractions were seen.

Abstract:Abstract The use of alternative nutritional sources is an important topic for animal production such as poultry. This study examined the effect of replacing soybean meal with sunflower leaf meal in the diet of laying shaver brown pullets. A total of 30 laying birds were assigned to three treatments of 0% (as control group), 10% and 15% MSFLM inclusion. Four eggs per replicate were randomly taken for three consecutive days at two weeks interval for five times, and 18 weeks individuals were selected after 40 days of experimental time. External parameters of the eggs (egg weight, egg length, egg breadth and egg shape index, shell thickness), and body parameters (Final body weight, weight gain), feed intake and hen day production were measured. For egg length, egg breadth and shell thickness showed significant difference (p< 0.05) in from the control birds. Final body weight, weight gain, feed intake and hen day production showed comparable results with values from eggs of birds on control diet. The study revealed the ability of birds to easily utilize the nutrients in the protein sources. MSFLM utilization up to 15% in pullets’ diet revealed no detrimental effect on the performance of the laying birds and the external qualities of eggs produced.

Effect of MTHFR genotypes and hyperhomocysteinemia on patient and graft survival in kidney transplant recipients.

Abstract:BACKGROUND The total homocysteine (tHcy) plasma level, which is partly determined by the MTHFR 677C-->T genotype, may be associated with vascular disease. We prospectively examined the influence of MTHFR genotypes (677C-->T, 1298A-->C) and tHcy plasma concentration on all cause mortality and graft outcomes of renal transplant recipients. METHODS Baseline tHcy plasma levels of 189 patients (three groups with either the MTHFR 677CC, CT or TT genotype, including 63 patients in each group, were matched for age, gender, body mass index and creatinine clearance at baseline), were obtained between September 1996 and May 1997. Follow-up data (time until return to dialysis therapy, time and cause of death) were collected from April to June 1999. Kaplan-Meier survival estimations were calculated and plotted, the groups (three MTHFR 677C-->T genotype groups, or three MTHFR 1298A-->C genotype groups, or two groups with tHcy plasma levels above/below 15 micromol/L) were compared by log-rank test. Age, gender, body mass index (BMI), time since transplantation, serum creatinine, creatinine clearance, combined MTHFR 677C-->T/1298A-->C genotypes, tHcy, folate and vitamin B12 plasma levels were evaluated with regard to graft and patient survival in a multivariate Cox-proportional hazard regression model. RESULTS During the follow-up period of 2.26 +/- 0.66 years, 9 patients died (5 in the TT, 2 in the CT and 2 in the CC genotype group; P = 0.34) and 22 returned to dialysis treatment (7 in the TT, 9 in the CT and 6 in the CC genotype group; P = 0.65). There was also no influence of MTHFR 1298A-->C genotypes (AA genotype, 114 patients; AC genotype, 64 patients; CC genotype, 11 patients) on patient or graft survival (P = 0.7087 and P = 0.1633, respectively). Two of 93 patients with a tHcy plasma level < or = 15 micromol/L died, in contrast to 7 of 96 patients in the tHcy > 15 micromol/L group, P = 0.0778. Two patients in the low tHcy group had to return to dialysis, in contrast to 20 patients in the high tHcy group (P = 0.0001). In the multivariate model there was no significant predictor of patient survival, and the serum creatinine was the only predictor of graft survival (P < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS In summary, our study shows that neither MTHFR 677C-->T/1298A-->C genotypes nor hyperhomocysteinemia are independently associated with patient or graft survival following kidney transplantation.

Abstract:This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of the fiber source (wheat bran [WB] or sugar beet pulp [SBP]) and xylanase supplementation on production, egg quality, ileal digestibility, intestinal morphology, and gastrointestinal pH in aged laying hens. A total of 540 laying hens (Lohman LSL Lite; 70 wk of lay) were randomized into 10 treatments (6 replicate cages of 9 birds) consisting of a corn soy control supplemented with 0, 3, or 6% WB or SBP with or without xylanase (100 mg of xylanase preparation per kg) for a period of 9 wk in a 5 × 2 factorial arrangement. Hens fed with the diets containing either of the levels of SBP or 6% WB had lower hen-day production, and addition of the enzyme improved hen-day production (P < 0.05), but it could not compensate for the lost production due to the higher levels of either of the fiber sources. Supplementation of 6% SBP to the control diet decreased egg mass (P < 0.05). All fiber-supplemented diets significantly decreased ADFI, which was restored on enzyme addition, with the exception of 3% WB diet. Treatments had no effects on egg weight, feed conversion ratio, egg quality, and serum and carcass traits, except for ileum weight, which was greater in hens fed with the 6% SBP diet (P < 0.05). Adding 3% SBP increased ileal DM digestibility (P < 0.05). Addition of 3% WB improved jejunal villus height, villus height-to-crypt depth ratio, and villus surface area (P < 0.05). Villus surface area, DM, organic matter, and protein digestibility increased as a result of enzyme supplementation (P < 0.05). Cecal pH was reduced on feeding diets containing 3% WB, containing 3% SBP, and with enzyme supplementation (P < 0.05). In conclusion, addition of 3% WB in a corn soy control diet has the potential to improve small intestine morphology in older hens without adverse effects on performance, especially if accompanied by the use of an enzyme, which simultaneously improved morphological traits and nutrient digestibility.

Abstract:We describe a 15-year-old boy with a posterior dislocation of the hip, fracture of the posterior column of the acetabulum and separation of the femoral capital epiphysis. To our knowledge no previous case in a child has been reported. Such high-energy injuries are extremely rare, and a poor outcome is expected. We advocate early referral to a specialised tertiary centre, and the use of a modification of Delbet's classification to reflect the complexity and displacement which may occur with this injury.
Effects of dietary local hemp seed meal as soybean meal alternative on productive performance, egg quality and yolk fatty acid composition of laying hens

Abstract:Supply problems and rising soybean meal prices have an impact on increasing feed costs. Hemp seed meal (HSM) with high protein content has the potential to be used as an alternative to soybean meal. This study evaluated the impact of dietary HSM of Narlı Sarayı variety as a substitute for soybean meal on productive performances, egg quality and yolk fatty acid composition. A total of 120 Lohmann Brown laying hens aged 50 weeks were allocated into 4 groups and 10 repetitions. Birds received treatment without HSM (control group), or soybean meal substituted with 4%, 8% and 12% HSM. Dietary 4% significantly increased (p < 0.05) egg production and decreased FCR compared with 8% and 12% HSM group but did not differ from the control group in an overall period of 6 weeks. The inclusion of the 12% HSM group significantly decreased (p < 0.05) egg production. Meanwhile, there was no influence of hemp seed meal (p > 0.05) on feed intake, egg weight, body weight change, egg shape index, albumen index, albumen weight, Haugh unit, yolk weight, yolk index and eggshell thickness. Dietary 8% and 12% HSM significantly increased (p < 0.05) eggshell weight and yolk colour compared with control and 4% HSM groups. There was a significant increase (p < 0.05) in omega-3 fatty acid concentration and a decrease in yolk omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids ratio with an increase in dietary HSM. It was concluded that dietary up to 12% HSM of the Narlı Sarayı variety decreased egg production and increased FCR. Increasing dietary levels of HSM increased eggshell weight, yolk colour and omega-3 fatty acids content and decreased the omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids ratio.
