Abstract:Organic contaminants, notorious for their complexity and resistance to degradation, are prevalent in aquatic environments, posing severe threats to ecosystems. Sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs), known for their stability and high effectiveness, have become a common choice for treating organic wastewater. Metal-organic framework materials (MOFs) have garnered substantial attention due to their facile chemical manipulation, unique structural configurations, and other favorable properties. Therefore, this article critically reviews recent advances in research involving the utilization of Fe-based MOFs (Fe-MOFs) and their derivatives in SR-AOPs. Specifically, it highlights the manipulation of influencing factors within the system to enhance the degradation of organic pollutants. The mechanisms and applications underlying the degradation of organic pollutants in the SR-AOPs system are also elucidated.

Abstract:As persulfate activator, Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) and derivatives are widely concerned in degradation of emerging environmental pollutants by advanced oxygen technology dominated by sulfate radical (Image 1) (SR-AOPs). However, the poor stability and low catalytic efficiency limit the performance of MOFs, requiring multiple strategies to further enhance their catalytic activity. The aim of this paper is to improve the catalytic activity of MOFs and their derivatives by physical and chemical enhancement strategies. Physical enhancement strategies mainly refer to the activation strategies including thermal activation, microwave activation and photoactivation. However, the physical enhancement strategies need energy consumption and require high stability of MOFs. As a substitute, chemical enhancement strategies are more widely used and represented by optimization, modification, composites and derivatives. In addition, the identification of reactive oxygen species, active site and electron distribution are important for distinguishing radical and non-radical pathways. Finally, as a new wastewater treatment technology exploration of unknown areas in SR-AOPs could better promote the technology development.

Abstract:The persulfate activation-based advanced oxidation process (PS-AOP) is an important technology in wastewater purification. Using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as heterogeneous catalysts in the PS-AOP showed good application potential. Considering the intrinsic advantages and disadvantages of MOF materials, combining MOFs with other functional materials has also shown excellent PS activation performance and even achieves certain functional expansion. This Review introduces the classification of MOFs and MOF-based composites and the latest progress of their application in PS-AOP systems. The relevant activation/degradation mechanisms are summarized and discussed. Moreover, the importance of catalyst-related interfacial interaction for developing and optimizing advanced oxidation systems is emphasized. Then, the interference behavior of environmental parameters on the interfacial reaction is analyzed. Specifically, the initial solution pH and coexisting inorganic anions may hinder the interfacial reaction process via the consumption of reactive oxygen species, affecting the activation/degradation process. This Review aims to explore and summarize the interfacial mechanism of MOF-based catalysts in the activation of PS. Hopefully, it will inspire researchers to develop new AOP strategies with more application prospects.

Abstract:Effective treatment of emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) is a key concern for human beings. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have become one of the core techniques of EOCs removal because of the high oxidation efficiency, complete mineralization, and controllable process. Sulfate radicals-based AOPs overcome the shortcomings of conventional Fenton processes. The development of efficient catalysts is major limitation of sulfate radicals-based AOPs for EOCs removal from wastewater. Metal organic framework (MOFs) receives growing global attention due to excellent properties of large surface area, flexible synthesis methods, and modifiable structure. Numerous researches have been conducted to fabricate MOFs-based catalysts. Herein, studies on MOFs-based materials as catalysts for catalytic removal of EOCs were summarized. The synthesis methods of MOFs were briefly described. Researches on MOFs materials as persulfate activators were reviewed from the perspective of Fenton-like and photo-Fenton system. Additionally, the effects of process factors including catalyst dosage, persulfate concentration, solution pH, coexisting inorganic anions, natural organic matter, and temperature on the catalytic efficiency were systematically summarized. Finally, the stability and toxicity of MOFs-based catalysts that affect the practical application was discussed. This work provides better understanding of sulfate radicals-based AOPs using MOFs-based catalysts for EOCs removal.

Abstract:Organic pollutant contamination is a general issue. Sulfate radical (SO4−)-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs) is an efficient technology for degradation of organic pollutants in aquatic environment. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been widely applied to activation of persulfate (PDS) and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) due to their tunable metal clusters/organic ligands, large surface area, well-ordered porous structure, and multiple active sites. Herein this review systematically and comprehensively summarizes basic strategies to enhance catalytic performance of MOFs in SR-AOPs. Two main factors to modulate MOFs are metal clusters and organic ligands. Three strategies of optimization, modification, and composite are introduced. The preparation methods, characterizations, catalytic performances, and mechanisms of several typical MOFs are highlighted. In addition, the prospects and challenges of MOFs applied to SR-AOPs are declared.

Abstract:Without question, information and communication technologies will play a vital role in enabling the next-generation power systems to be more energy efficient and reliable than currently existing power systems. In particular, on the LV and MV grids, NB-PLC technologies are particularly attractive as a communications solution due to their low cost of deployment and ability to communicate across the transformer. This ability to cross the transformer is vital in power system topologies with lower population densities. It was ascertained that wideband interfering noise sources, such as defective lighting systems, hampered communication in both PRIME and G3-PLC systems. Additionally, the next-generation NB-PLC standards ITU-T G.hnem and IEEE 1901.2 were investigated. ITU-T G.hnem and IEEE 1901.2 seek to unify NB-PLC technologies and promise higher data rates than PRIME or G3-PLC. Surely, narrowband PLC technologies have a critical role in enabling a more efficient and reliable power grid.

Abstract:Advanced oxidation process (AOP), with a high oxidation efficiency, fast reaction speed (relatively no secondary pollution), has become one of the core technologies of industrial wastewater and advanced drinking water treatment. Heterogeneous Fenton-like oxidation process (HFOP) is a kind of AOP, which developed rapidly in recent years in such a way to overcome the disadvantages of traditional Fenton reaction. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and their derivatives become essential heterogeneous catalysts for organics mineralization due to the large specific surface area, abundant active sites, and ease of structural regulation. However, the knowledge gap on the mechanism and the fate of heterogeneous catalyst species during organics degradation activities by MOFs presents considerable impediments, particularly for a wide application and scaling up the process. This work has the potential to provide guidance and ideas for researchers and engineers in the fields of environmental remediation, environmental catalysis and functional materials. This review focuses on clarifying the critical mechanism of •OH production from MOFs and derivatives as well as its action on the organic's degradation process. The recent developments in MOF based HFOP are compared, and more attention is paid for the following aspects in this review: (1) classifies systematically progressive modification methods of MOFs by chemical and physical treatments; (2) analyzes the fate of catalytic species during treating organic wastewater; (3) proposes design ideas and principles for improving the performance of MOFs catalysts; (4) discusses the main factors influencing the catalytic properties and practical application; (5) summarizes the possible research challenges and directions for MOFs and their derivatives as catalysts applied to wastewater treatment in the future.

Abstract:Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) with their large surface area and numerous active sites have attracted significant research attention. Recently, the application of MOFs for the catalytic degradation of organic pollutants has provided effective solutions to address diverse environmental problems. In this review, the latest progress in MOF-based removal and degradation of organic pollutants is summarized according to the different roles of MOFs in the removal reaction systems, such as physical adsorbents, enzyme-immobilization carriers, nanozymes, catalysts for photocatalysis, photo-Fenton and sulfate radical based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs). Finally, the opportunities and challenges of developing advanced MOFs for the removal of organic pollutants are discussed and anticipated.

Abstract:Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are novel porous materials formed by the link-up of transition metal ions through organic bridges. Fe-based metal organic frameworks (Fe-MOFs), an important branch of MOFs, not only have the characteristics of porous channels, exceptionally high specific surface area and multiple active sites like most MOFs, but are more environmentally friendly than other MOFs. Therefore, Fe-MOFs are more suitable for environmental restoration. This paper focuses on the application of Fe-MOFs in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). The heterogeneous catalysts used in conventional AOPs are generally less efficient due to the difficulty in balancing specific surface area and stability. Therefore, MOFs, a novel multifunctional material with exceptionally high surface area, multiple active sites, acid-base stability and thermal stability, are expected to be heterogeneous catalysts for next-generation AOPs. By surveying the application of MOFs in different AOPs (Fenton-like, photocatalysis and sulfate radical (SO4·−)-mediated oxidation), it was found that MOFs not only exhibited excellent catalytic performance in various AOPs, but also improved the pH range for AOPs. The non-specificity of MOFs and the wide adaptability to pH (3.0–6.5) have contributed to the tremendous development of heterogeneous catalysts, while the mechanism of MOFs synthesis, how to convert sulfate ions in natural water into sulfate radicals, and how to reduce the cost of synthesis remain to be further studied.Graphical abstractAOPs with Fe-MOFs are similar to Santa Claus with reindeer, in that Fe-MOFs help AOPs do their job (i.e., treat water pollution) more efficiently.

Abstract:Over the past decade, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have received tremendous interest in a wide variety of fields, particularly in water purification, thanks to their large surface area, adjustable topologies and high physicochemical tunability. Herein, we present an in-depth overview of MOFs materials currently available in the heterogeneous advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for water treatment, via radical (including • OH, SO 4 •− , O 2 •− , etc.) and/or nonradical ( 1 O 2 , for example) mediated oxidation. The emphasis is made on the recent advance of diverse MOFs, as effective peroxide activators to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) for organic contaminant removal in water. The further enhancements in MOFs activated peroxide processes with the photo-, electro-, and ultrasonic-assisted strategies are summarized based on the state-of-the-art development in this field. The detailed discussions have also focused on the specific behaviors, modulation strategies, role of reactive sites and mechanism of ROS formation in these MOFs activated peroxide systems. In the end, the challenge of large-scale synthesis and industrial application of MOFs towards peroxide activation is proposed, which implies great application potential of MOFs-based materials for environmental remediation.

Abstract:With the fast-track progresses in adsorptive/catalytic technology and micro/nano-materials, the water remediation including the pollutant removal has benefited greatly. This review starts with the main physical and chemical treatments of organic contaminants, and provides a brief comprehension for advanced oxidation process. Then by putting some details on the ultrasonic cavitation, it discusses the probable principles of sonodynamic oxidation (SDO) in a fundamental understanding, and describes the assistance of oxidant precursors, heterogeneous catalysts and energy inputs in the SDO. As well, the perception of metal organic framework (MOF) in the water remediation is provided according to the behaviors, highlighting the unique advantages of MOF as adsorbents or catalysts. More importantly, the review hierarchically overviews the recent advances of MOF-assisted SDO platform, and via the deep observations toward the methodologies, performances and mechanisms, it emphasizes on the extension services or opportunities of MOF-assisted SDO platform to remove organic contaminants. Last but not least, some challenges and prospects are proposed to enrich the performance improvements and theoretical innovations for the MOF-assisted SDO platform in the water remediation applications.

Abstract:Over the last decade, single-atom catalysts (SACs) have emerged as a new frontier in the field of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), since they allow combining the advantages of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts, eventually maximizing the atomic efficiency. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), periodic porous structures formed through self-assembly of transition metal cations and organic ligands, are regarded as an ideal precursor for the synthesis of SACs. In this review, the synthetic strategies and characterization methods for MOF-derived SACs are described, with special focus on experimental techniques and theoretical simulations employed to verify the existence of single atoms and metal-binding sites. In addition, applications of these catalysts in water treatment by AOPs and electrochemical AOPs based on the activation of persulfate and H 2 O 2 are discussed, paying attention to reaction mechanisms investigated via DFT calculations. Finally, perspectives and research challenges for future development of MOF-derived SACs as catalysts in AOPs are commented.

Abstract:With the ever-growing water pollution issues, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have received growing attention due to their high efficiency in the removal of refractory organic pollutants. Transition metal sulfides (TMSs), with excellent optical, electrical, and catalytical performance, are of great interest as heterogeneous catalysts. These TMSs-based heterogeneous catalysts have been demonstrated to be capable and adaptable in water purification through advanced oxidation processes. The aim of this review is to conduct an exhaustive analysis and summary of recent progress in the application of TMSs-based AOPs for water decontamination. Firstly, the commonly used tuning strategies for TMSs-based catalysts are concisely introduced, including artificial size and shape control, composition control, doping, and heterostructure manufacturing. Then, a comprehensive overview of the current state-of-the-art progress on TMSs-based AOPs (i.e., Fenton-like oxidation, photocatalytic oxidation, and electrochemical oxidation processes) for wastewater treatment is discussed in detail, with an emphasis on their catalytic performance and involved mechanism. In addition, influencing factors of water chemistry, namely, pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, inorganic species, and natural organic matter on the catalytic performance of established AOPs are analyzed. Furthermore, the reusability and stability of TMSs-based catalysts in these AOPs are also outlined. Finally, current challenges and future perspectives related to TMSs-based catalysts and their applications for AOPs wastewater treatment are proposed. It is expected that this review would shed some light on the future development of TMSs-based AOPs towards water purification.

Abstract:The release of organic contaminants has grown to be a major environmental concern and a threat to the ecology of water bodies. Persulfate-based Advanced Oxidation Technology (PAOT) is effective at eliminating hazardous pollutants and has an extensive spectrum of applications. Iron-based metal-organic frameworks (Fe-MOFs) and their derivatives have exhibited great advantages in activating persulfate for wastewater treatment. In this article, we provide a comprehensive review of recent research progress on the significant potential of Fe-MOFs for removing antibiotics, organic dyes, phenols, and other contaminants from aqueous environments. Firstly, multiple approaches for preparing Fe-MOFs, including the MIL and ZIF series were introduced. Subsequently, removal performance of pollutants such as antibiotics of sulfonamides and tetracyclines (TC), organic dyes of rhodamine B (RhB) and acid orange 7 (AO7), phenols of phenol and bisphenol A (BPA) by various Fe-MOFs was compared. Finally, different degradation mechanisms, encompassing free radical degradation pathways and non-free radical degradation pathways were elucidated. This review explores the synthesis methods of Fe-MOFs and their application in removing organic pollutants from water bodies, providing insights for further refining the preparation of Fe-MOFs.

Abstract:As an emerging area, single-atom catalysts (SACs), in the past decade, have sparked tremendous research interests in various fields due to maximum atom utilization and excellent catalytic activity. Recently, SACs have been extended to peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-mediated advanced oxidation processes for organic wastewater remediation. In the current perspective, we first briefly overviewed typical synthetic methods and characterization techniques for metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived SACs. Then, we highlighted the degradation applications of various refractory organic pollutants via SAC/PMS systems. Subsequently, the catalytic mechanisms as well as the variety of reactive species were discussed. Finally, we proposed several future development directions for MOF-based SACs in environmental remediation.

Abstract:Single atom (SA)-embedded nitrogen-doped carbon has shown great potential in environmental remediation. Nowadays, engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) have attracted great research interests in recent years. Metal-organic framework (MOF) derived SAs show the advantages of tunable topology and averaged separated active sites. SAs bridge the gap between homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts. The reaction efficiency can be significantly improved by designing the MOFs derived from carbon and SAs. In this review, the research advanced in MOFs-derived carbon and SAs in advanced oxidation process (AOP) in water were summarized. Major strategies to fabricate the SAs derived from MOFs were discussed, including the mixed/single metal strategy, metal-containing linker strategy, pore confinement strategy, thermal diffusion strategy, and pyrolysis MOFs with bulk metals. Advanced characterization technologies have been introduced, including electron microscopy and spectroscopic methods. To explain the catalytic mechanism for various applications, the relationship between the performance and the atomic configuration was systematically discussed. Recent applications of the MOFs derived from carbon and SAs have been summarized. A series of the latest work on effectively removing pollutants by SAs are also listed. Based on the fundamental knowledge and recent practical application of MOFs-derived carbon and SAs, some perspectives on the further directions were presented. This review offers guidance for applying novel engineered nanomaterials in the water treatment field.

Abstract:The ever-expanding scale of industry and agriculture has led to the gradual increase of pollutants (e.g., heavy metal ions, synthetic dyes, and antibiotics) in water resources, and the ecology and wastewater are grave problems that need to be solved urgently and has attracted widespread attention from the research community and industry in recent years. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a type of organic-inorganic hybrid material with a distinctive 3D network crystal structure. Lately, MOFs have made striking progress in the fields of adsorption, catalytic degradation, and biomedicine on account of their large specific surface and well-developed pore structure. This review summarizes the latest research achievements in the preparation of pristine MOFs, MOF composites, and MOF derivatives for various applications including the removal of heavy metal ions, organic dyes, and other harmful substances in sewage. Furthermore, the working mechanisms of utilizing adsorption, photocatalytic degradation, and membrane separation technologies are also briefly described for specific pollutants removal from sewage. It is expected that this review will provide inspiration and references for the synthesis of pristine MOFs as well as their composites and derivatives with excellent water treatment performance.

Abstract:Abstract The widely discussed single‐atom catalysts (SACs) are regarded as a kind of attractive material for sulfate radical‐based advanced oxidation processes (SR‐AOPs) owing to their maximum atomic utilization efficiency and outstanding stability. Currently, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have appeared as prospective precursors for building SACs due to extensive chelating sites, functional adjustability, and structural tunability. However, there are few critical and systematic reviews about the application of MOF‐derived SACs in SR‐AOPs, especially in‐depth analysis of the mechanisms. Therefore, this review seeks to offer a thorough summary of the development of MOF‐derived SACs in SR‐AOPs. First, the unique advantages of MOFs as derivative precursors for SACs are discussed thoroughly. Afterward, the current synthesis strategies are elaborated categorically to unveil the formation process of single atoms and their coordination environments. Notably, the roles of different reaction sites including the generation of reactive species and mediating electron transfer are further analyzed to explain mechanisms comprehensively. Thereafter, the characterization techniques and theoretical calculations for mechanisms studies are also highlighted. Eventually, critical insights into present challenges and future developments are proposed, which are expected to enhance the catalytic efficiency of MOF‐derived SACs in SR‐AOPs.

Abstract:The ineffective control of the release of pollutants into water has led to serious water pollution. Compared with conditions in the past, the polluting components in aquatic environments have become increasingly complex. Some emerging substances have led to a new threat to the safety of water. Therefore, developing cost-effective technologies for the remediation of water pollution is urgently needed. Adsorption has been considered the most effective operational unit in water treatment processes and thus adsorption materials have gained wide attention. Among them, metal organic frameworks (denoted as MOFs) have been rapidly developed in recent years due to their unique physicochemical performance. They are characterized by larger porosity and larger specific surface area, easier pore structure designing, and comfortable structural modification. In many fields such as adsorption, separation, storage, and transportation, MOFs show a better performance than conventional adsorption materials such as active carbon. Their performance is often dependent on their structural distribution. To optimize the use of MOFs, their fabrication should be given more attention, without being limited to conventional preparation methods. Alternative preparation methods are given in this review, such as diffusion, solvent thermal, microwave, and ion thermal synthesis. Furthermore, developing functionalized MOFs is an available option to improve the removal efficiencies of a specific contaminant through pre-synthetic modification and post-synthesis modification. Post-synthesis modification has become a recent research hotspot. The coupling of MOFs with other techniques would be another option to ameliorate the remediation of water pollution. On one hand, their intrinsic drawbacks may be reduced. On the other hand, their performance may be enhanced due to their interaction behaviors. Overall, such coupling technologies are able to enhance the performance of an individual material. Because the excellent performance of MOF materials has been widely recognized and their developments have received wide attention, especially in environmental fields, in the present work we provide a review of fabrication of MOFs so as to motivate readers to deepen their understanding of the use of MOFs.
