Abstract:An organism’s reaction to environmental changes is mediated by coordinated responses of multiple tissues. Additionally, parental priming may increase offsprings’ acclimation potential to changing environmental conditions. As the effects of human-induced climate change, such as ocean acidification (OA), continue to intensify it is critical to assess the acclimation potential of species at the whole organismal scale. For this we need to understand the cross-talk between tissues in regulating and responding to pH changes. Here by using a multi-tissue approach we determine the influence of 1) variation in parental behavioural tolerance and 2) parental environment, on molecular responses of their offspring in a coral reef fish. The gills and liver showed the highest transcriptional response to OA conditions in juvenile fish regardless of the parental environment, while the brain and liver showed the greatest signal of intergenerational acclimation. Key functional pathways that were altered in the brain upon within-generational CO exposure were restored to control levels when parents were exposed to OA conditions. Furthermore, the expression of a new complement of genes involved in key functions was altered in the offspring only when parents were previously exposed to OA conditions. Therefore, previous parental conditioning to OA can reprogram tissue transcriptomic profiles of the offspring enabling them to better cope in an environment with elevated CO levels. Overall, our results reveal tissue-specific transcriptional changes underlying intergenerational plastic responses to elevated CO exposure and highlight the integration of these changes in promoting organismal acclimation to OA.

Avenues of reef-building coral acclimatization in response to rapid environmental change

Abstract:ABSTRACT The swiftly changing climate presents a challenge to organismal fitness by creating a mismatch between the current environment and phenotypes adapted to historic conditions. Acclimatory mechanisms may be especially crucial for sessile benthic marine taxa, such as reef-building corals, where climate change factors including ocean acidification and increasing temperature elicit strong negative physiological responses such as bleaching, disease and mortality. Here, within the context of multiple stressors threatening marine organisms, I describe the wealth of metaorganism response mechanisms to rapid ocean change and the ontogenetic shifts in organism interactions with the environment that can generate plasticity. I then highlight the need to consider the interactions of rapid and evolutionary responses in an adaptive (epi)genetic continuum. Building on the definitions of these mechanisms and continuum, I also present how the interplay of the microbiome, epigenetics and parental effects creates additional avenues for rapid acclimatization. To consider under what conditions epigenetic inheritance has a more substantial role, I propose investigation into the offset of timing of gametogenesis leading to different environmental integration times between eggs and sperm and the consequences of this for gamete epigenetic compatibility. Collectively, non-genetic, yet heritable phenotypic plasticity will have significant ecological and evolutionary implications for sessile marine organism persistence under rapid climate change. As such, reef-building corals present ideal and time-sensitive models for further development of our understanding of adaptive feedback loops in a multi-player (epi)genetic continuum.

Timing-specific parental effects of ocean warming in a coral reef fish

Abstract:Population and species persistence in a rapidly warming world will be determined by an organism’s ability to acclimate to warmer conditions, especially across generations. There is potential for transgenerational acclimation but the importance of ontogenetic timing in the transmission of environmentally induced parental effects remains mostly unknown. We aimed to disentangle the effects of two critical ontogenetic stages (juvenile development and reproduction) to the new-generation acclimation potential, by exposing the spiny chromis damselfish Acanthochromis polyacanthus to simulated ocean warming across two generations. By using hepatic transcriptomics, we discovered that the post-hatching developmental environment of the offspring themselves had little effect on their acclimation potential at 2.5 months of life. Instead, the developmental experience of parents increased regulatory RNA production and protein synthesis, which could improve the offspring’s response to warming. Conversely, parental reproduction and offspring embryogenesis in warmer water elicited stress response mechanisms in the offspring, with suppression of translation and mitochondrial respiration. Mismatches between parental developmental and reproductive temperatures deeply affected offspring gene expression profiles, and detrimental effects were evident when warming occurred both during parents’ development and reproduction. This study reveals that the previous generation’s developmental temperature contributes substantially to thermal acclimation potential during early life; however, exposure at reproduction as well as prolonged heat stress will likely have adverse effects on the species’ persistence.

Abstract:Abstract Global carbon emissions and associated increase in ocean temperatures are understood to be the main driving force in the degradation of coral reefs. Elevated temperatures impact various life stages of scleractinian corals, from the free-floating planulae of brooding corals to older, sexually viable individuals. With global warming, questions have arisen over whether organismal adaptation will be enough to keep up with the pace of environmental change. Researchers have pursued investigations of whether or not rapid acclimatization, through transgenerational plasticity, can help protect populations until genetic adaptation occurs. Acclimatization in corals has been widely studied in all life stages of corals, with the important exception of recently settled juveniles. In this study, I built upon past research by exposing adult Pocillopora damicornis colonies to elevated (28.5°C) or ambient (25.5°C) temperatures and examining the settlement ability and growth of their planulae ex situ . Juveniles from preconditioned parents fared better in higher temperatures compared to their naïve counterparts. Lunar timing of planula release between treatments peaked at different times in the lunar cycle. Peak planula release occurred on lunar day 23 for prestressed corals and on lunar day 7 for corals from ambient temperature seawaters. While future projects should follow up on these preliminary trials with in situ experiments to assess this phenomenon in the field, this study represents an important step in understanding how corals may be able to acclimatize and eventually adapt to climate change.
Brooding Corals: Planulation Patterns, Larval Behavior, and Recruitment Dynamics in the Face of Environmental Change

Abstract:The brooding reproductive mode in scleractinian corals is often associated with high recruitment success facilitating replenishment of populations following disturbance events. Thus, if conditions continue to deteriorate on coral reefs from anthropogenic impacts and global climate change, a clear understanding of patterns of planulation, larval behavior and recruitment by brooding species is needed to accurately predict future population dynamics and the overall resilience of coral reefs. Here, we review the current knowledge of these topics with specific emphasis on the effects of environmental factors and discuss implications for reproductive success and population stability. Brooding corals typically release mature larvae during planulation events that vary in synchrony on a seasonal, monthly and daily basis linked to various environmental conditions, such as seasonal sea surface temperature, the lunar and diel cycles. Release time dictates the environmental conditions that larvae will experience, such as light availability and wave action, and thus affects dispersal potential and recruitment success. Differences in larval size exist among species, as well as within broods released during the planulation events of a single species; a possible strategy to maximize the chance of fitness in unpredictable habitats. Upon release, brooded larvae are typically competent to settle within hours to days and respond to a variety of environmental cues, such as type of benthic cover and irradiance, to facilitate settlement choice. Species-specific larval photosensitivity aids in depth and substrate selection promoting survival and can ultimately influence adult distribution patterns. Studies indicate that shifts in benthic cover from environmental changes, such as algal abundance and sedimentation, may inhibit or change patterns of larval settlement, which will affect species composition and reef resilience. Research on the effects of ocean acidification and rising sea surface temperatures on the physiology, settlement and early calcification of larvae of brooding corals show mixed results, but patterns suggest that if global climate change continues at or beyond projected scenarios over the next century, recruitment may be compromised. Thus, an increased understanding of planulation patterns, larval behavior, and recruitment dynamics of brooding species will be essential for conservation and management in the face of environmental change.

Abstract:Reef restoration via direct outplanting of sexually propagated juvenile corals is a key strategy in preserving coral reef ecosystem function in the face of global and local stressors (e.g. ocean warming). To advance our capacity to scale and maximize the efficiency of restoration initiatives, we examined how abiotic conditions (i.e. larval rearing temperature, substrate condition, light intensity, and flow rate) interact to enhance post-settlement survival and growth of sexually propagated juvenile Montipora capitata . Larvae were reared at 3 temperatures (high: 28.9°C, ambient: 27.2°C, low: 24.5°C) for 72 h during larval development, and were subsequently settled on aragonite plugs conditioned in seawater (1 or 10 wk) and raised in different light and flow regimes. These juvenile corals underwent a natural bleaching event in Kāne‘ohe Bay, O‘ahu, Hawai‘i (USA), in summer 2019, allowing us to opportunistically measure bleaching response in addition to survivorship and growth. This study demonstrates how leveraging light and flow can increase the survivorship and growth of juvenile M. capitata . In contrast, larval preconditioning and substrate conditioning had little overall effect on survivorship, growth, or bleaching response. Importantly, there was no optimal combination of abiotic conditions that maximized survival and growth in addition to bleaching tolerances. This study highlights the ability to tailor sexual reproduction for specific restoration goals by addressing knowledge gaps and incorporating practices that could improve resilience in propagated stocks.

Abstract:Thermal priming of reef corals can enhance their heat tolerance, however, the legacy effects of heat stress during parental brooding on larval resilience remain understudied. This study investigated whether preconditioning adult coral Pocillopora damicornis to high temperatures (29°C and 32°C) could better prepare their larvae for heat stress. Results showed that heat‐acclimated adults brooded larvae with reduced symbiont density and shifted thermal performance curves. Reciprocal transplant experiments demonstrated higher bleaching resistance and better photosynthetic and autotrophic performance in heat‐exposed larvae from acclimated adults compared to unacclimated adults. RNA‐seq revealed strong cellular stress responses in larvae from heat‐acclimated adults that could have been effective in rescuing host cells from stress, as evidenced by the widespread upregulation of genes involved in cell cycle and mitosis. For symbionts, a molecular coordination between light harvesting, photoprotection and carbon fixation was detected in larvae from heat‐acclimated adults, which may help optimize photosynthetic activity and yield under high temperature. Furthermore, heat acclimation led to opposing regulations of symbiont catabolic and anabolic pathways and favored nutrient translocation to the host and thus a functional symbiosis. Notwithstanding, the improved heat tolerance was paralleled by reduced light‐enhanced dark respiration, indicating metabolic depression for energy saving. Our findings suggest that adult heat acclimation can rapidly shift thermal tolerance of brooded coral larvae and provide integrated physiological and molecular evidence for this adaptive plasticity, which could increase climate resilience. However, the metabolic depression may be maladaptive for long‐term organismal performance, highlighting the importance of curbing carbon emissions to better protect corals.

Coral long-term recovery after bleaching: implications for sexual reproduction and physiology

Abstract:This study examined the long-term impacts of coral bleaching on the reproduction and physiology of , a dominant reef-building coral in Hawaiʻi. We monitored bleached and non-bleached colonies during and after a natural coral bleaching event in 2014 and analyzed reproductive traits and transcriptomic signatures eight months later. Our study shows that non-bleached and bleached colonies successfully produced gametes. Colonies that bleached had smaller oocytes, and development was slower than in colonies that did not bleach. Corals with different vulnerabilities to bleaching exhibited distinct transcriptomic responses eight months after a bleaching event. Those more prone to bleaching showed suppression of transcripts associated with sperm motility, calcification, and immunity. We found distinct transcriptomic signatures between fringing and patch reefs, suggesting local adaptation and/or acclimatization. To conserve coral reefs and better understand how they will be affected by future heat stress, we need to track which colonies survive and examine how their physiological and reproductive processes are impacted in the short- and long-term. This is critical as consecutive bleaching events become more frequent, and corals have less time to recover. Our study provides valuable molecular and reproductive data that can be used for conservation and management purposes. This information can help us identify signs of coral vulnerability and resilience to bleaching, project how future bleaching events will affect coral reproduction, determine which traits are most at risk, and assess which sites are more likely to be compromised.

Abstract:The persistence of reef-building corals is threatened by macroalgal competitors leading to a major demographic bottleneck in coral recruitment. Whether parental effects exist under coral–algal competition and whether they influence offspring performance via microbiome alterations represent major gaps in our understanding of the mechanisms by which macroalgae may hinder coral recovery. We investigated the diversity, variability and composition of the microbiome of adults and larvae of the coral Pocillopora acuta and surrounding benthic substrate on algal-removed and algal-dominated bommies. We then assessed the relative influence of parental and offspring environmental effects on coral recruitment processes by reciprocally exposing coral larvae from two parental origins (algal-removed and algal-dominated bommies) to algal-removed and algal-dominated environmental conditions. Dense macroalgal assemblages impacted the microbiome composition of coral larvae. Larvae produced by parents from algal-dominated bommies were depleted in putative beneficial bacteria and enriched in opportunistic taxa. These larvae had a significantly lower survival compared to larvae from algal-removed bommies regardless of environmental conditions. In contrast, algal-induced parental and offspring environmental effects interacted to reduce the survival of coral recruits. Together our results demonstrate negative algal-induced parental and offspring environmental effects on coral recruitment that could be mediated by alterations in the offspring microbiome.

Abstract:Reef-building corals are inhabited by functionally diverse microorganisms which play important roles in coral health and persistence in the Anthropocene. However, our understanding of the complex associations within coral holobionts is largely limited, particularly transgenerational exposure to environmental stress, like ocean acidification. Here we investigated the microbiome development of an ecologically important coral Pocillopora damicornis following transgenerational exposure to moderate and high pCO2 (partial pressure of CO2) levels, using amplicon sequencing and analysis. Our results showed that the Symbiodiniaceae community structures in adult and juvenile had similar patterns, all of which were dominated by Durusdinium spp., previously known as clade D. Conversely, prokaryotic communities varied between adults and juveniles, possibly driven by the effect of host development. Surprisingly, there were no significant changes in both Symbiodiniaceae and prokaryotic communities with different pCO2 treatments, which was independent of the life history stage. This study shows that ocean acidification has no significant effect on P. damicornis microbiome, and warrants further research to test whether transgenerational acclimation exists in coral holobiont to projected future climate change.

Abstract:With coral reefs declining globally, resilience of these ecosystems hinges on successful coral recruitment. However, knowledge of the acclimatory and/or adaptive potential in response to environmental challenges such as ocean acidification (OA) in earliest life stages is limited. Our combination of physiological measurements, microscopy, computed tomography techniques and gene expression analysis allowed us to thoroughly elucidate the mechanisms underlying the response of early-life stages of corals, together with their algal partners, to the projected decline in oceanic pH. We observed extensive physiological, morphological and transcriptional changes in surviving recruits, and the transition to a less-skeleton/more-tissue phenotype. We found that decreased pH conditions stimulate photosynthesis and endosymbiont growth, and gene expression potentially linked to photosynthates translocation. Our unique holistic study discloses the previously unseen intricate net of interacting mechanisms that regulate the performance of these organisms in response to OA.
Complex parental effects impact variation in larval thermal tolerance in a vertically transmitting coral

Abstract:Coral populations must be able to adapt to changing environmental conditions for coral reefs to persist under climate change. The adaptive potential of these organisms is difficult to forecast due to complex interactions between the host animal, dinoflagellate symbionts and the environment. Here we created 26 larval families from six Montipora capitata colonies from a single reef, showing significant, heritable variation in thermal tolerance. Our results indicate that 9.1% of larvae are expected to exhibit four times the thermal tolerance of the general population. Differences in larval thermotolerance were driven mainly by maternal contributions, but we found no evidence that these effects were driven by symbiont identity despite vertical transmission from the dam. We also document no evidence of reproductive incompatibility attributable to symbiont identity. These data demonstrate significant genetic variation within this population which provides the raw material upon which natural selection can act.

Within- and transgenerational stress legacy effects of ocean acidification on red abalone (Haliotis rufescens) growth and survival

Abstract:Understanding the mechanisms by which individual organisms respond and populations adapt to global climate change is a critical challenge. The role of plasticity and acclimation, within and across generations, may be essential given the pace of change. We investigated plasticity across generations and life stages in response to ocean acidification (OA), which poses a growing threat to both wild populations and the sustainable aquaculture of shellfish. Most studies of OA on shellfish focus on acute effects, and less is known regarding the longer term carryover effects that may manifest within or across generations. We assessed these longer term effects in red abalone (Haliotis rufescens) using a multi-generational split-brood experiment. We spawned adults raised in ambient conditions to create offspring that we then exposed to high pCO2 (1180 μatm; simulating OA) or low pCO2 (450 μatm; control or ambient conditions) during the first 3 months of life. We then allowed these animals to reach maturity in ambient common garden conditions for 4 years before returning the adults into high or low pCO2 treatments for 11 months and measuring growth and reproductive potential. Early-life exposure to OA in the F1 generation decreased adult growth rate even after 5 years especially when abalone were re-exposed to OA as adults. Adult but not early-life exposure to OA negatively impacted fecundity. We then exposed the F2 offspring to high or low pCO2 treatments for the first 3 months of life in a fully factorial, split-brood design. We found negative transgenerational effects of parental OA exposure on survival and growth of F2 offspring, in addition to significant direct effects of OA on F2 survival. These results show that the negative impacts of OA can last within and across generations, but that buffering against OA conditions at critical life-history windows can mitigate these effects.
Extreme Environmental Variability Induces Frontloading of Coral Biomineralisation Genes to Maintain Calcification Under pCO2 Variability

Abstract:Corals residing in habitats that experience high‐frequency seawater pCO2 variability may possess an enhanced capacity to cope with ocean acidification, yet we lack a clear understanding of the molecular toolkit enabling acclimatisation to environmental extremes or how life‐long exposure to pCO2 variability influences biomineralisation. Here, we examined the gene expression responses and micro‐skeletal characteristics of Pocillopora damicornis originating from the reef flat and reef slope of Heron Island, southern Great Barrier Reef. The reef flat and reef slope had similar mean seawater pCO2, but the reef flat experienced twice the mean daily pCO2 amplitude (range of 797 v. 399 μatm day−1, respectively). A controlled mesocosm experiment was conducted over 8 weeks, exposing P. damicornis from the reef slope and reef flat to stable (218 ± 9) or variable (911 ± 31) diel pCO2 fluctuations (μatm; mean ± SE). At the end of the exposure, P. damicornis originating from the reef flat demonstrated frontloading of 25% of the expressed genes regardless of treatment conditions, suggesting constitutive upregulation. This included higher expression of critical biomineralisation‐related genes such as carbonic anhydrases, skeletal organic matrix proteins, and bicarbonate transporters. The observed frontloading corresponded with a 40% increase of the fastest deposited areas of the skeleton in reef flat corals grown under non‐native, stable pCO2 conditions compared to reef slope conspecifics, suggesting a compensatory response that stems from acclimatisation to environmental extremes and/or relief from stressful pCO2 fluctuations. Under escalating ocean warming and acidification, corals acclimated to environmental variability warrant focused investigation and represent ideal candidates for active interventions to build reef resilience while societies adopt strict policies to limit climate change.

Ki-67 expression score correlates to survival rate in gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST).

Abstract:PURPOSE To evaluate the immunohistochemical expression of p16, Ki-67, p53 and Bcl-2 proteins in gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST); to assess the possible association between these variables and clinical and histopathological factors of cancer; and to check for prognostic value of these variables (survival and recurrence). METHODS A sample of 55 patients treated surgically for GIST in three hospitals was studied. The surgically excised tumors were confirmed as GIST by KIT, vimentin, desmin S100 protein, CD117, 1A4 and CD34 assessment in paraffin blocks. RESULTS Only 9 (16%) cases of GIST were positive for p53, p16 was positive among 43.6%; 80% of GISTs showed staining for Bcl-2. The proliferative index (expressed as the proportion of positive cells) assessed by immunohistochemical expression of Ki-67 was high in 49% of cases. Elevated Ki-67 scores were associated to high histological grade (p=0.0026) and mitosis index, MI (p=0.0001). High Ki-67 index was associated to death. Expression of p53, p16 and Bcl-2 did not correlate to morphological or clinical variables. CONCLUSIONS Ki-67 immunohistochemical evaluation should be included in preoperative evaluation of GIST biopsies or surgical specimens as a prognostic tool for clinical staging; and all other proteins studied (Bcl-2, p53 and p16) did not play a role in GIST metabolic or carcinogenic process, remaining without prognostic value.

Abstract:The persistence of populations of marine organisms depends on the success of the dual processes of reproduction and recruitment. The production of offspring alone is inconsequential unless larvae and propagules can recruit, which often entails a period of development and distribution in the water column and subsequent selection of appropriate habitats. For fish, this may mean drifting in currents before responding to particular habitat cues. For corals and other benthic invertebrates, larvae must undergo site selection, settlement and metamorphosis into the juvenile form, and survivorship is directly linked to site choice and environmental conditions. Both biotic and abiotic factors affect population replenishment success, and hence, anthropogenic influences such as pollution, sedimentation and climate change can negatively affect critical processes such as reproductive synchronization in spawning species, successful embryological development, appropriate site selection, settlement, metamorphosis and in the case of reef building corals, acquisition of the required zooxanthellae partner. Effective management practices are essential for ensuring the persistence of populations of coral reef organisms of economic, cultural and ecological value.

Abstract:Although cross generation (CGP) and multigeneration (MGP) plasticity have been identified as mechanisms of acclimation to global change, the weight of evidence indicates that parental conditioning over generations is not a panacea to rescue stress sensitivity in offspring. For many species there were no benefits of parental conditioning. Even when improved performance was observed, this waned over time within a generation or across generations and fitness declined. On the other hand, CGP and MGP studies identified resilient species with stress tolerant genotypes in wild populations and selected family lines. Several bivalves possess favourable stress tolerance and phenotypically plastic traits potentially associated with genetic adaptation to life in habitats where they routinely experience temperature and/or acidification stress. These traits will be important to help 'climate proof' shellfish ventures. Species that are naturally stress tolerant and those that naturally experience a broad range of environmental conditions are good candidates to provide insights into the physiological and molecular mechanisms involved in CGP and MGP. It is challenging to conduct ecologically relevant global change experiments over the long times commensurate with the pace of changing climate. As a result, many studies present stressors in a shock‐type exposure at rates much faster than projected scenarios. With more gradual stressor introduction over longer experimental durations and in context with conditions species are currently acclimatized and/or adapted to, the outcomes for sensitive species might differ. We highlight the importance to understand primordial germ cell development and the timing of gametogenesis with respect to stressor exposure. Although multigenerational exposure to global change stressors currently appears limited as a universal tool to rescue species in the face of changing climate, natural proxies of future conditions (upwelling zones, CO2 vents, naturally warm habitats) show that phenotypic adjustment and/or beneficial genetic selection is possible for some species, indicating complex plasticity‐adaptation interactions.

Abstract:The environment experienced by one generation has the potential to affect the subsequent one through non‐genetic inheritance of parental effects. Since both mothers and fathers can influence their offspring, questions arise regarding how the maternal, paternal and offspring experiences integrate into the resulting phenotype. We aimed to disentangle the maternal and paternal contributions to transgenerational thermal acclimation in a reef fish, Acanthochromis polyacanthus, by exposing two generations to elevated temperature (+1.5°C) in a fully factorial design and analysing the F2 hepatic gene expression. Paternal and maternal effects showed not only common but also parent‐specific components, with the father having the largest influence in shaping the offspring's transcriptomic profile. Fathers contributed to transcriptional transgenerational response to warming through transfer of epigenetically controlled stress–response mechanisms while mothers influenced increased gene expression associated with lipid metabolism regulation. However, the key to acclimation potential was matching thermal experiences of the parents. When both parents were exposed to the same condition, offspring showed increased expression of genes related to structural RNA production and transcriptional regulation, whereas environmental mismatch in parents resulted in maladaptive parental condition transfer, revealed by translation suppression and endoplasmic reticulum stress. Interestingly, the offspring's own environmental experience had the smallest influence on their hepatic transcription profiles. Taken together, our results show the complex nature of the interplay among paternal, maternal and offspring cue integration, and reveal that acclimation potential to ocean warming might depend not only on maternal and paternal contributions but importantly on congruent parental thermal experiences.

Abstract:Parental exposure to environmental stress can influence phenotypic plasticity by offspring developing under that stressor. Transgenerational effects may also reshape natural selection on developmental plasticity by influencing its fitness consequences and expression of its genetic variation. We tested these hypotheses in the purple sea urchin , an invertebrate exposed to coastal upwelling (periods of low temperature and pH impacting biomineralization and performance). We conditioned parents and larvae to experimental upwelling and integrated RNA-seq, phenotyping of body size and biomineralization, and measured fitness-correlated traits in a quantitative genetic experiment. Larvae developing under upwelling induced widespread differential expression (DE), decreased biomineralization, and reduced body size. We detected fitness benefits for increased biomineralization and reduced size under upwelling indicative of adaptive plasticity, but only when larvae were spawned from parents exposed to upwelling. Larval DE was largely associated with adaptive phenotypic plasticity. Negative genetic correlation in DE was abundant between genes associated with adaptive plasticity. However, genetic correlations in DE associated with body size plasticity were significantly more positive in larvae from upwelling-exposed parents. These results show that transgenerational effects modify the fitness landscape and genetic architecture of phenotypic plasticity and its regulatory pathways.

Abstract:For many organisms, early life stages experience significantly higher rates of mortality relative to adults. However, tracking early life stage individuals through time in natural settings is difficult, limiting our understanding of the duration of these 'mortality bottlenecks', and the time required for survivorship to match that of adults. Here, we track a cohort of juvenile corals (1-5 cm maximum diameter) from 12 taxa at a remote atoll in the Central Pacific from 2013 to 2017 and describe patterns of annual survivorship. Of the 537 juveniles initially detected, 219 (41%) were alive 4 years later, 163 (30%) died via complete loss of live tissue from the skeleton, and the remaining 155 (29%) died via dislodgement. The differing mortality patterns suggest that habitat characteristics, as well as species-specific features, may influence early life stage survival. Across most taxa, survival fit a logistic model, reaching > 90% annual survival within 4 years. These data suggest that mortality bottlenecks characteristic of 'recruitment' extend up to 5 years after individuals can be visually detected. Ultimately, replenishment of adult coral populations via sexual reproduction is needed to maintain both coral cover and genetic diversity. This study provides key insights into the dynamics and time scales that characterize these critical early life stages.
