Abstract:The remediation of petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) in a contaminated soil by electrokinetic (EK) treatment was studied in the laboratory. The effects of applying a constant electrical current on soil pH, moisture content, electrical conductivity (EC), temperature, and the concentrations of three fractions of TPH (C10-C16, C17-C34 and C35-C40) were investigated. The experiment was run for seven days and soil samples were collected at the end of the 7 day period for analysis of soil pH and TPH concentration. There were extreme pH conditions near the electrodes. At the end of the experiment there was around a 37% reduction of C10-C16 chain compounds compared to the initial concentration of 164 +/- 18 mg/kg. The study investigated TPH remediation to a depth of 24 cm, which is significantly more than most studies of EK remediation of TPH-contaminated soils. We observed reductions in TPH concentrations even at a depth of 24 cm. The spatial distribution of reductions in TPH concentrations was also studied and it was observed that more remediation occurred near the cathodes than near the anodes. Further, the greatest reductions in TPH concentrations were recorded near the electrodes in the lowest and middle parts of the experimental set-up. The application of electrokinetics to remediate TPH-contaminated soils could be a viable option as an in situ remediation technology. (C) 2021 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Electrokinetic remediation (EKR) is an effective approach to eliminate heavy metal contaminants from soil and pore water. However, only a few studies have been conducted on related analytical theory because of the complexity of transport processes and the lack of effective calculation methods. In this study, a novel analytical model is proposed to investigate the one-dimensional transport of heavy metal ions (HMIs), encompassing electro-osmosis, electro-migration, hydraulic osmosis, diffusion, adsorption, and thermal diffusion. A comprehensive analysis is conducted to study the effects of key parameters on the transport process. Several important insights are gained, e.g., an increase in the Soret coefficient accelerates the migration of HMIs. Meanwhile, an increase in both the electric potential gradient and the hydraulic gradient is beneficial for the remediation of contaminated soil, although the effect of the electric potential gradient is more significant.

Abstract:Since the early 1980's there have been several different strategies designed and applied to the remediation of subsurface environment including physical, chemical and biological approaches. They have had varying degrees of success in remediating contaminants from subsurface soils and groundwater. The objective of this review is to examine the range of technologies for the remediation of contaminants, particularly petroleum hydrocarbons, in subsurfaces with a specific focus on bioremediation and electrokinetic remediation. Further, this review examines the efficiency of remediation carried out by combining bioremediation and electrokinetic remediation. Surfactants, which are slowly becoming the selected chemicals for mobilizing contaminants, are also considered in this review. The current knowledge gaps of these technologies and techniques identified which could lead to development of more efficient ways of utilizing these technologies or development of a completely new technology.

Abstract:Electro-kinetic remediation (EKR) can effectively remove heavy metal contaminants in soil, however little research is conducted for analytical theory due to the complex transport processes and the lack of effective calculation methods. Considering that the heat released from electrode will lead to a temperature gradient in soil affecting the removing efficiency of EKR, a novel analytical model associated with experimental and numerical validations for one-dimensional transport of heavy metal ions (HMIs) is established. The new analytical model incorporates electro-osmosis, electro-migration, hydraulic-osmosis, diffusion, adsorption and thermal diffusion, and a new concept named average removed degree is introduced to describe the remediation efficiency. Non-isothermal distribution condition is observed by the EKR experiments and an ideal remediation effect is achieved. Finally, the effects of different parameters on transport process are analyzed. The results show that the increase of the Soret coefficient accelerates the migration of HMIs. Meanwhile, both the increase of electric potential gradient and hydraulic gradient is beneficial to the remediation of contaminated soil, where the effect of electric potential gradient is more significant. In addition, the changes of HMIs concentration in the cathode boundary have minimal influence on the overall remediation efficiency but an obvious effect on the cathode region.

Abstract:In the past two decades, electrokinetic technology combined with permeable reactive barriers (EK-PRBs) has demonstrated great potential for soil heavy metal remediation. This review focuses on outlining the strategies for improving the removal efficiency of heavy metal by EK-PRB. The type of electrolyte, electrode material, type and position of PRB material, magnitude of the electric field, soil water content and pH are the key factors. We have summarized and concluded the optimization methods of EK-PRB energy consumption for the first time. We found that regulating the electric field and self-powered cells have great potential for energy consumption optimization in the future. The existing EK-PRB remediation technologies were summarized and prospected, providing a comprehensive and systematic knowledge framework for EK-PRB remediation of soil heavy metal pollution. EK-PRB technology still needs to be explored in the direction of optimizing energy consumption and PRB material development, and more basic research is still needed to collect data for predictive system design. This review would suggest valuable views for practical remediation of heavy metals in soil by EK-PRB with high efficiency and acceptable energy consumption.

Abstract:The combination of electrokinetic remediation and permeable reactive barrier (EK-PRB combined remediation technology) is a new green technology for in-situ removal of soil and groundwater pollutants. This technology combines the advantages of electrokinetic remediation and permeable reactive barrier technology, and can deal with different types of organic and inorganic pollutants. It has the characteristics of convenient installation, simple operation, no secondary pollution, etc., and has broad development and application prospect. This paper introduces the technical principle of EK-PRB, summarizes the latest research results on the remediation of heavy metal, organic matter and nitrate contaminated soil and groundwater by the electrokinetic remediation and PRB. Finally,the technical problems of combinated remediation were pointed out, and development and application direction of this technology was noted.
An Increasing Cr Recovery from Soil with Catholyte-Enhanced Electrokinetic Remediation: Effects on Voltage Redistribution Throughout Soil Sections

Abstract:The evolution of potential gradient across different soil sections that were responsible for divergence of Cr migration in electrokinetic (EK) remediation need further investigate. Here, the redistribution of Cr and voltage was conducted out under four kinds of catholytes applying a constant potential. The results showed that the total removal efficiency of dissolved Cr from soil matrix achieved 51.7% with humic acid (HA) catholyte, compared to 40.4, 36.5 and 31.9% with KCl, citric aicd (CA) and H2O catholytes, respectively. The voltage drops on soil cells were enhanced with assisted catholytes, in which facilitating the migration capacity of Cr out of soil in a faster way. The voltage shifted to cathode electrode with a significant value of above 17 V over 12 d due to polarization in EK-H2O, which may become the limiting factor for driving the Cr migration. The voltage located in the last two soil slices that controlled by electric conductivity of pore water made a large proportion of 4.3-5.2 V (1.08-1.4 V cm(-1)) in EK-CA, which was consistent with the highest Cr removal efficiency of 64.3-85.6%. Whilst the voltage concentrated in the first soil slice and central slices related to water holding capacity reached 3.3-5.6 V (0.83-1.40 V cm(-1)) in EK-HA, contributing to a remarkably increasing Cr removal efficiency of 49.3-58.7%. In addition, HA can restrain the transformation and migration of Ca and S ions. Furthermore, higher migration potential for Cr indicated the voltage were efficiently consumed on Cr depletion in EK-HA. These suggested that HA was optional catholyte for site with the utmost Cr recovery and lower energy loss.

Abstract:Electrokinetic remediation is a new and innovative technology. Because of its high efficiency in removing contaminants from soil and groundwater, in recent years, it has been paid more and more attention to. This paper reviewed the principle of electrokinetic in situ remediation of contaminated groundwater and soils by electrokinetics and its newest advances in research and applications, expatiated on the advantages of this technology over other technologies, pointed out the obstacles to overcome in using this technology, and discussed the possibilities in full-scale commercial applications. Electrokinetics can enhance the mass-transfer process, thus remove the heavy metal to a given direction fast and efficiently; meanwhile electrokinetics can combine other remediation technology, thus possessing broad application foreground. It is the research trend from single electrokinetics to combined electrokinetics. Nowadays, research on migration mechanism, model of contaminants and impact of the soil property (component, acid/base property) on the contaminant removal efficiency still needs to be furthered.
Comparative Experiments on Electro-Osmotic Treatment Effect of Polluted Soil Using EKG and Iron Electrodes

Abstract:This study presents a comprehensive comparison of the electro-osmosis treatments of heavy metal contaminated soil using electrokinetic geosynthetics (EKG) and iron electrodes in terms of both theoretical analysis and experimental research. The variation in the electrical parameters was analyzed, and the results show linear relationships between temperature and conductivity and between the soil and pore water conductivities. The average cathode contact resistance of iron is 60% smaller than that of EKG, whereas the average anode contact resistance of EKG is 56% smaller than that of iron. The values of the power consumption per unit mass of contaminants for EKG and iron are 1.895 and 1.989 kJ/g, respectively. After electro-osmosis, the number of soil pores increased, but the average area decreased, with an average area of 0.9100–1.0504 μm2. Based on microstructure analysis, we obtained higher electroosmotic efficiency and realized the effective analysis and utilization between macroscopic and microscopic parameters.

Abstract:Soil Cd pollution is a threat to the global ecological environment. Electrokinetic remediation (EKR) generally uses strong electric fields to obtain high removal efficiency, which leads to a series of side reactions and high energy consumption. EKR using low-voltage gradients showed weak migration of Cd and low remediation efficiency. Herein, to develop an effective enhanced EKR technology using low voltage gradient (0.2 V·cm−1), array adsorption zone and polarity exchange were applied simultaneously. Five experiments were conducted to determine the effect of polarity exchange, array adsorption zone and their combination on Cd removal when EKR was carried out at 0.2 V·cm−1. Results showed that the combined use of the array adsorption zone and polarity exchange achieved optimal remediation and average Cd removal efficiency was 83%. Moreover, the reciprocating motion of Cd caused by polarity exchange is no longer a side effect. In the wheat cultivation experiment, the Cd concentration of wheat root, stem and leaf decreased by 86%, 93% and 95% after Cd was removed by EKR coupled with array adsorption zone and polarity exchange. The 30-day energy consumption is 7.72 kWh·m−3, which is far lower than that of other enhancement methods. The present work proposes an effective EKR technology working at low voltage for Cd-contaminated soil.

Abstract:Soft clay contamination is an increasingly global issue with significant implications for land development and human health. Electrokinetic remediation (EKR) has demonstrated significant potential for cleaning contaminated soils. It is crucial to develop efficient processes that minimize environmental impact and reduce costs. A series of citric acid (CA)-enhanced EKR tests were conducted using a novel experimental setup, with the electrolyte positioned above the soil surface, to examine the impact of four different electrode arrangements on the effectiveness of EKR. The position of the electrode end had a significant impact on the migration of ions in the anolyte and catholyte, which in turn affected the volume reduction in the anolyte, the magnitude of the current, and the migration of heavy metals. The electrode arrangement mode c (electrodes suspended in the electrolytes) can enhance the migration of the anolyte and reduce the drainage of the soil, making it an effective measure for improving the removal rate of heavy metals. After the heavy metal remediation is complete, the bearing capacity of the soil should be increased. Changing the electrode arrangement to mode d (anode suspended in the anolyte, a very small part of the cathode inserted into the soil) is an effective measure for reducing the soil water content and improving soil strength.

Abstract:This paper reviewed the principles of electrokinetics and its application in remediation of contaminated soils and groundwater. The electrokinetics is able to drive water and ions to move through soil pores including electromigration, electroosmosis and electrophoresis under electric field. Many researches have demonstrated that high efficient removal of heavy metal ions can be achieved. New developments demonstrated that electrokinetics can also remove organic pollutants alone or by combining with bioremediation synergistically. This technology is convenient in installation, simple in operation, cheap and does not disrupt ecoenvironment, thus is a potential remediation technology.

Abstract:Electrode corrosion and salt crystallization are important challenges that restrict the engineering application of electrokinetic technology. In the present study, using stainless steel as an electrode, and deionized water (DW), citric acid (CA) and polyaspartic acid (PASP) as electrolytes, Pb/Cu-contaminated soil was remediated by electrokinetic. All of the EK experiments were conducted in a 2 L soil cell reactor with a moisture level of about 35% blended with 1000 mg·g-1 of Pb and 778 mg·g-1 of Cu under a constant voltage gradient (1 V·cm-1, 2 V·cm-1) for 150 h. The removal efficiency of heavy metals and influencing factors, as well as the phenomenon and mechanism of electrode corrosion and salt crystallization were explored. The experimental results showed under the action of electric field, the Ca in the test soil would move to the cathode, and the crystal was formed in the alkaline condition. Additionally, the conductivity of the electrode was reduced. During the EK process, water at the anode was primarily oxidized, undergoing a reduction reaction at the cathode. Because H+ and OH- were transported through the soil by electromigration and electro-osmotic flow (EOF), changes in soil pH could occur. The concentrations distribution of Pb-Cu appeared to be related to the distribution of soil pH in the cell, which might be associated with the desorption and hydroxide precipitation of Pb-Cu. PASP resulted in obvious inhibitory effect on the corrosion of stainless steel electrode, CA and PASP could clearly destroy the formation of CaCO3 crystal, while barely effectively disrupted the formation of Ca (OH)2 crystal. Both CA and PASP could promote the removal of Pb, but the influence of PASP on the removal of Cu was not obvious, and the effect of CA was very significant. Combined with different corrosion inhibitor and reinforcing agent, stainless steel can be chosen as the engineering application electrode in electrokinetic remediation.

Abstract:Since entering the new era, the economy has grown rapidly and the economic strength has improved significantly, but it is accompanied by resource and environmental problems caused by the high pollution and high energy consumption growth model. Realizing the transformation of economic development from "incremental" to "increasing quality" and promoting economic green transformation has become one of the main development goals of China in the next stage. With the rapid development of China's social economy, the changes of industrialization, urbanization and agricultural intensification are getting faster and faster. The discharge of industrial "three wastes" and urban domestic wastewater has gradually increased, and a large amount of chemical fertilizers and pesticides have been applied to rural arable land. It accelerates soil heavy metal pollution. Electrodynamic remediation technology, as an emerging soil in situ remediation technology, has attracted wide attention due to its advantages of wide range of pollutant removal, low cost and good effect. In this paper, a remediation device for heavy metal-contaminated soil is designed based on electrodynamic remediation technology. That is, on the basis of the digital economy, an electrolyte circulation mechanism with high adsorption of heavy metal ions is introduced. In this paper, the feasibility of electrokinetic remediation of the contaminated soil was investigated, and the effects of electrolyte type, voltage, and remediation time on the removal of heavy metals were studied. The following results were obtained through a series of experimental studies: the pH values of region A in E1, E2, and E3 were 3.24, 3.18, and 3.09, respectively. The current peak values of E1, E2 and E4 are 0.44, 0.68 and 0.75 mA respectively. E4 had the best adsorption effect on heavy metal cadmium ions, with an average adsorption rate of 7.3%. The results show that the electrodynamic remediation device can effectively remove heavy metals in soil. It can also recycle the electrolyte solution, which is an environmentally friendly repair device.

A review of combinations of electrokinetic applications

Abstract:Anthropogenic activities contaminate many lands and underground waters with dangerous materials. Although polluted soils occupy small parts of the land, the risk they pose to plants, animals, humans, and groundwater is too high. Remediation technologies have been used for many years in order to mitigate pollution or remove pollutants from soils. However, there are some deficiencies in the remediation in complex site conditions such as low permeability and complex composition of some clays or heterogeneous subsurface conditions. Electrokinetic is an effective method in which electrodes are embedded in polluted soil, usually vertically but in some cases horizontally, and a low direct current voltage gradient is applied between the electrodes. The electric gradient initiates movement of contaminants by electromigration (charged chemical movement), electro-osmosis (movement of fluid), electrolysis (chemical reactions due to the electric field), and diffusion. However, sites that are contaminated with heavy metals or mixed contaminants (e.g. a combination of organic compounds with heavy metals and/or radionuclides) are difficult to remediate. There is no technology that can achieve the best results, but combining electrokinetic with other remediation methods, such as bioremediation and geosynthetics, promises to be the most effective method so far. This review focuses on the factors that affect electrokinetic remediation and the state-of-the-art methods that can be combined with electrokinetic.
Electrokinetic remediation of cadmium-contaminated soil using polarity reversal method: Optimization analysis and mechanism exploration

Abstract:Electrokinetic remediation (EKR) has been applied for in-situ removal of Cd from contaminated soil, and the EKR enhanced with polarity reversal has achieved a higher Cd removal efficiency. However, the migration and accumulation mechanisms of Cd in the EKR process have not been investigated. In this paper, the cross-impacts of the voltage gradient, citric acid concentration in the electrolyte, and polarity reversal frequency on the removal efficiency by EKR of Cd and the optimization conditions were investigated. The migration and accumulation mechanisms of Cd were explored by analyzing the changes in electrokinetic process parameters, experimental phenomena, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The results showed that the maximum removal efficiency of Cd reached 82.26%. The optimal conditions were determined by fitting the RSM model using the BBD design. In the EKR experiment with polarity reversal, Cd accumulated mainly in the middle part of the soil, attributed to the formation of chemical precipitation focusing area caused by soil pH transition, ion-induced potential gradient well trapping effect (IIPGWTE), or soil compaction induced by water loss. In conclusion, the various parameters have cross-impacts on the EKR of Cd-contaminated soil, and efficient in-situ removal of Cd from the contaminated soil can be achieved by adjusting the parameter conditions.

Abstract:With the acceleration of urbanization, less land is available for the direct construction of infrastructure. The reuse of landfills can provide resources in this respect; however, this approach requires the simultaneous removal of heavy metal ions and the strengthening of foundation. In this study, Ningbo's landfill was selected as a field test site. The concentrations of five heavy metal elements (Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd, Cr) gradually decrease with depth. Fulvic acid can complex with heavy metal salts to form a stable soluble conjugate, which greatly improves the electric repair effect. The removal rate of heavy metals after electrokinetic remediation is approximately 25%-35%. The heavy metal removal effect of the F-2 test group was the best. The anode settlement of each group of experiments is approximately 12% larger than the cathode settlement.

Abstract:Semi-volatile organic pollutants were found in most organic contaminated sites, especially in the industrial production of plastic and paint products, dismantling of electronic wastes, production of organic solvents, and chemical coatings. Electrokinetic remediation (EKR) was recognized as critical method to resolve the problem of organic pollutants separation and degradation. However, the low efficiency desorption and migration of organic pollutants was the main concerns during EK remediation. In this study, cyclododecane (CDD) was selected to investigate the process of electroosmotic flushing with anionic surfactant (sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDBS) and non-ionic surfactants (alcohol ethoxylate, AEO) for facilitating chemical desorption of low boiling point organic pollutants from soil. Simulated contaminated soil was subjected to treatment in an EK cell at 1 V/cm for 7 days. The experimental dependent variables, such as current, electroosmotic flow (EOF), pH, electrical conductivity (EC), and the concentration of CDD in the contaminated soil were continuously monitored. The results revealed that both current and EOF exhibited the trend of SDBS (13.74 mA, 350.9 mL) > water (8.22 mA, 285.7 mL) > AEO (6.12 mA, 124.3 mL). Furthermore, the removal efficiency of CDD by surfactants also followed this order with corresponding percentages of 90.87% and 90.01%. The soil pH near the cathode increased, and it caused alkalization trend of the flowing soil solution and improvement of CDD removal rate. Conversely, the lowest EC value was observed in the middle of the soil chamber. The highest overall CDD removal rate was achieved by employing a strategy of surfactant-assisted electrokinetic remediation, and approximately 90% CDD was transfered to the liquid phase. These findings contribute to our understanding of spatial and temporal variations in pollutant removal and the interplay between different electrokinetic variables during EK remediation.

Enhanced Electrokinetic Remediation of Heavy Metals-organic Pollutants Compound Contaminated Red Soils

Abstract:Thousands of sites are contaminated with both heavy metals and organic compounds,which brought the difficulties and challenges to soil remediation.Previous studies had shown that electrokinetic(EK)remediation technology has potential to remove heavy metals and organic compounds simultaneously.In this paper,red soil was selected as a test soil and it was spiked with pyrene and copper at a concentration of 500 mg·kg-1 to simulate typical compound pollutants.The impact of the biosurfactant hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin(HPCD)and oxidant H2O2 on the EK remediation of compound polluted soil with pH control was studied.A voltage gradient of 1 V·cm-1 was applied for all the tests of 15 days duration.In all the tests,both pyrene and copper had the trend of migrating towards the cathode.The results showed that increasing soil pH reduced the oxidation and degradation of pyrene and hindered the removal of copper.The treatment of 10% HPCD and controlling catholyte pH at 3.5 was efficient for the desorption and migration of contaminants,and the removal rate of pyrene and copper reached 51.3% and 80.5%,respectively.The use of 6% H2O2 was found to be ineffective for the removal of pyrene and copper because of the instabilities of H2O2.The increase of H2O2 concentration and dose could be considered to increase the removal efficiency of PAHs.
