Abstract:Wearable electrochemical sensors have attracted tremendous attention in recent years. Here, a three-dimensional paper-based microfluidic electrochemical integrated device (3D-PMED) was demonstrated for real-time monitoring of sweat metabolites. The 3D-PMED was fabricated by wax screen-printing patterns on cellulose paper and then folding the pre-patterned paper four times to form five stacked layers: the sweat collector, vertical channel, transverse channel, electrode layer and sweat evaporator. A sweat monitoring device was realized by integrating a screen-printed glucose sensor on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate with the fabricated 3D-PMED. The sweat flow process in 3D-PMED was modelled with red ink to demonstrate the capability of collecting, analyzing and evaporating sweat, due to the capillary action of filter paper and hydrophobicity of wax. The glucose sensor was designed with a high sensitivity (35.7 μA mM-1 cm-2) and low detection limit (5 μM), considering the low concentration of glucose in sweat. An on-body experiment was carried out to validate the practicability of the three-dimensional sweat monitoring device. Such a 3D-PMED can be readily expanded for the simultaneous monitoring of alternative sweat electrolytes and metabolites.

Abstract:Wearable biosensors are attracting great interest thanks to their high potential for providing clinical-diagnostic information in real time, exploiting non-invasive sampling of biofluids. In this context, sweat has been demonstrated to contain physiologically relevant biomarkers, even if it has not been exhaustively exploited till now. This biofluid has started to gain attention thanks to the applications offered by wearable biosensors, as it is easily collectable and can be used for continuous monitoring of some parameters. Several studies have reported electrochemical and optical biosensing strategies integrated with flexible, biocompatible, and innovative materials as platforms for biospecific recognition reactions. Furthermore, sampling systems as well as the transport of fluids by microfluidics have been implemented into portable and compact biosensors to improve the wearability of the overall analytical device. In this review, we report and discuss recent pioneering works about the development of sweat sensing technologies, focusing on opportunities and open issues that can be decisive for their applications in routine-personalized healthcare practices.

Abstract:Notably, 3D-printed flexible and wearable biosensors have immense potential to interact with the human body noninvasively for the real-time and continuous health monitoring of physiological parameters. This paper comprehensively reviews the progress in 3D-printed wearable biosensors. The review also explores the incorporation of nanocomposites in 3D printing for biosensors. A detailed analysis of various 3D printing processes for fabricating wearable biosensors is reported. Besides this, recent advances in various 3D-printed wearable biosensors platforms such as sweat sensors, glucose sensors, electrocardiography sensors, electroencephalography sensors, tactile sensors, wearable oximeters, tattoo sensors, and respiratory sensors are discussed. Furthermore, the challenges and prospects associated with 3D-printed wearable biosensors are presented. This review is an invaluable resource for engineers, researchers, and healthcare clinicians, providing insights into the advancements and capabilities of 3D printing in the wearable biosensor domain.

Abstract:Capabilities in health monitoring enabled by capture and quantitative chemical analysis of sweat could complement, or potentially obviate the need for, approaches based on sporadic assessment of blood samples. Established sweat monitoring technologies use simple fabric swatches and are limited to basic analysis in controlled laboratory or hospital settings. We present a collection of materials and device designs for soft, flexible, and stretchable microfluidic systems, including embodiments that integrate wireless communication electronics, which can intimately and robustly bond to the surface of the skin without chemical and mechanical irritation. This integration defines access points for a small set of sweat glands such that perspiration spontaneously initiates routing of sweat through a microfluidic network and set of reservoirs. Embedded chemical analyses respond in colorimetric fashion to markers such as chloride and hydronium ions, glucose, and lactate. Wireless interfaces to digital image capture hardware serve as a means for quantitation. Human studies demonstrated the functionality of this microfluidic device during fitness cycling in a controlled environment and during long-distance bicycle racing in arid, outdoor conditions. The results include quantitative values for sweat rate, total sweat loss, pH, and concentration of chloride and lactate.

Abstract:Wearable devices offer diverse continuous monitoring capabilities through advanced sensing methods and wearable devices. Recent advancements in flexible electronics, materials science, and chemistry or electrochemistry have led to the development of wearable sensors for non-invasively monitoring biofluidic markers, including sweat, interstitial fluid (ISF), and tears. These devices utilized integration of various devices such as microfluidic patches, microneedle (MN) arrays, and conformal eye-contact configurations, enabling continuous monitoring of analytes indicative of health status. The progression of wearable devices has evolved towards the use of biocompatible, soft materials that can be worn comfortably on the body for extended periods. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the fundamental essential processes and recent advancements in biomonitoring technologies under the emerging wearable devices and sensing methods that have facilitated the commercialization of wearable devices for healthcare. It covers the physiology of sweat, ISF, and tears, as well as the materials and biosensing mechanisms involved. Advances in sweat induction and sampling methods are also discussed, alongside the design considerations for system-level development of wearable sensing devices.

Abstract:<p>Wearable biosensors′ ability to measure continuous health parameters gives promise to healthcare with great potentials to advance precision medicine. The stability and balance within the human body are critical for organ systems′ normal functions. The imbalance of electrolytes may lead to several diseases such as hypertension, heart failure, and kidney diseases. Sweat electrolytes analysis, that is, the analysis of one of the noninvasively accessible biofluids, can provide important information about physiologically relevant quantities, and a combination of them can be employed for comprehensive studies. However, wearable biosensors′ large‐scale utilization for extensive population monitoring requires rapid, reliable, low‐cost, and high‐throughput integration of such platforms. Here, 3D‐printing technology is adapted to develop a novel, multiplex, low‐cost, and mechanically flexible all‐inclusive integrated wearable (AIIW) patch, which contains 3D‐printed flexible sensors along with flexible wearable‐microfluidic sample handling (WMFSH) units, integrated in a few hours. The AIIW patch is fully characterized, and its utility for noninvasive and continuous health monitoring is successfully demonstrated by simultaneous ex situ and in situ measuring of multiple electrolyte levels in sweat. This work is envisioned as another step toward enabling personalized health monitoring practices by implementing 3D‐printing technology in the easy and low‐cost development of customized integrated, flexible wearable biosensing platforms to monitor an individual's health parameters.</p>

Abstract:Due to the ever-increasing number of diabetic people globally, continuous monitoring of glucose became an increasingly important subject in the field of point-of-care diagnosis. However, there are still many shortcomings of current diagnostic approaches, including materials and device design, comfort, and stability of device performance. Here, brief, albeit comprehensive, information on current trends of using novel materials and techniques to fabricate wearable electrochemical biosensors for continuous and non-invasive glucose monitoring are provided. Flexible materials as versatile substances to fabricate wearable glucose biosensors used in various body fluids, including sweat, interstitial body fluid (ISF), saliva, and tear, are studied. Moreover, current electrode fabrication methods such as printing, laser induction, photolithography, electrodeposition, seed mediation, and dealloying to construct porous and one-dimensional material with interesting mechanical properties are explored. Microfluidic designs and self-powered systems for better control and storage of the body fluids and decreasing the weight, size, and cost of the wearable electrochemical glucose devices are also studied in this review. The overall progress made to date in building such conceptualized efforts for real-time, wearable continuous monitoring of glucose and the future of the field is briefly discussed. This review has benefits compared to previous reviews, as recent developments in continuous glucose monitoring have interestingly combined with two other amazing and innovative subjects of biosensing, including microfluidics and self-powered systems.

Abstract:Bioreceptor‐based wearable electrochemical sensors have opened new avenues for on‐body and continuous molecular detections, enabling personalized and preventive healthcare. This review summarises recent innovations and applications of those wearable biosensing systems in detecting a variety of biochemical markers, such as small molecules, hormones, drugs, and macromolecules, in biofluids including interstitial fluid, sweat, wound exudate, saliva, and tears. Recent advancements in wearable electrochemical biosensors have opened new avenues for on‐body and continuous detection of biomarkers, enabling personalized, real‐time, and preventive healthcare. While glucose monitoring has set a precedent for wearable biosensors, the field is rapidly expanding to include a wider range of analytes crucial for disease diagnosis, treatment, and management. In this review, recent key innovations are examined in the design and manufacturing underpinning these biosensing platforms including biorecognition elements, signal transduction methods, electrode and substrate materials, and fabrication techniques. The applications of these biosensors are then highlighted in detecting a variety of biochemical markers, such as small molecules, hormones, drugs, and macromolecules, in biofluids including interstitial fluid, sweat, wound exudate, saliva, and tears. Additionally, the review also covers recent advances in wearable electrochemical biosensing platforms, such as multi‐sensory integration, closed‐loop control, and power supply. Furthermore, the challenges associated with critical issues are discussed, such as biocompatibility, biofouling, and sensor degradation, and the opportunities in materials science, nanotechnology, and artificial intelligence to overcome these limitations.

Abstract:With the increasing prevalence of growing population, aging and chronic diseases continuously rising healthcare costs, the healthcare system is undergoing a vital transformation from the traditional hospital-centered system to an individual-centered system. Since the 20th century, wearable sensors are becoming widespread in healthcare and biomedical monitoring systems, empowering continuous measurement of critical biomarkers for monitoring of the diseased condition and health, medical diagnostics and evaluation in biological fluids like saliva, blood, and sweat. Over the past few decades, the developments have been focused on electrochemical and optical biosensors, along with advances with the non-invasive monitoring of biomarkers, bacteria and hormones, etc. Wearable devices have evolved gradually with a mix of multiplexed biosensing, microfluidic sampling and transport systems integrated with flexible materials and body attachments for improved wearability and simplicity. These wearables hold promise and are capable of a higher understanding of the correlations between analyte concentrations within the blood or non-invasive biofluids and feedback to the patient, which is significantly important in timely diagnosis, treatment, and control of medical conditions. However, cohort validation studies and performance evaluation of wearable biosensors are needed to underpin their clinical acceptance. In the present review, we discuss the importance, features, types of wearables, challenges and applications of wearable devices for biological fluids for the prevention of diseased conditions and real-time monitoring of human health. Herein, we summarize the various wearable devices that are developed for healthcare monitoring and their future potential has been discussed in detail.

Abstract:The fields of flexible electronics and microfluidic-based labs-on-a-chip continue to advance, with new devices and systems-level technologies reported on a daily basis. However, much of this advancement is limited to each of these fields separately, rather than development of platforms for combining flexible electronics and microfluidics together to realize wearable sensors and sensor systems. We present new approaches for combining electronics and microfluidic devices together on wearable textile-based substrates, resulting in combined systems that are highly portable, mechanically flexible, and can be easily integrated with clothing. We develop polymer materials traditionally used for artistic designs on clothing for use as engineering materials, i.e., as the base polymer for conductive electronics that can be integrated with polymer microfluidic channels printed in the same materials. Unlike other techniques, our technologies and materials are highly compatible with clothing-based textiles, and result in non-polarizable electrodes for improved frequency response. Our platforms can be laundered, facilitating rugged wearable devices and systems for biomedical and environmental monitoring. Application areas for our flexible and wearable platforms include health care, worker safety, food safety, consumer devices, personalized medicine and biomedical and environmental monitoring. We present technologies for specific applications that include: lighting and health monitors for safety vests; heart and perspiration (pH, lactate) monitors for athletic clothing; and wearable bioelectric and biochemical monitoring.
Modern brachytherapy for treatment of prostate cancer.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Prostate cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in men. An increasing number of these patients are seeking minimally invasive procedures such as transperineal interstitial permanent radioactive seed prostate brachytherapy. METHODS This paper reviews the historical perspective and the current advances in transperineal interstitial permanent radioactive seed prostate brachytherapy. The 10- to 15-year results data now published for brachytherapy alone or in combination with external-beam irradiation are also reviewed. RESULTS Modern brachytherapy using transperineal interstitial permanent radioactive seed prostate brachytherapy offers patients an excellent quality of life with convenient outpatient treatment with long-term (10- to 15-year) biochemical relapse-free survival rates ranging from 67% to 87%, depending on risk stratification. CONCLUSIONS Modern-day brachytherapy utilizing either radioactive iodine-125 or palladium-103 alone or in combination with supplemental external-beam treatment offers patients a successful treatment outcome with acceptable toxicity.

Abstract:Technological advancements have enabled development of innovative solutions like wearable sensors for real time monitoring of various health parameters. The use of wearable sensors has gained significant popularity owing to their accessibility, ease-of-use, interpretation of data and potential to provide vital information for maintaining healthy lifestyle. With the advances in enzymatic detection technologies, these sensors can aid in the early detection of several diseases and help users to manage chronic conditions effectively. Wearable sensors such as textile-based sensors, printed/flexible sensor, accessory-based sensors and implantable sensors can provide low cost, real-time measurement of clinically relevant biomolecules in sweat, tears and saliva. These biofluids are readily available, easily accessible and allows continuous monitoring while ensuring minimal discomfort to the users, making them a suitable choice. Here, the technological advancements in enzyme-based wearable sensors for assessing vital health parameters, their categorization based on their proximity to the user, challenges associated with their acceptability and future perspectives have been reviewed. Integration of sensing technologies with machine learning can enhance the reliability of wearable sensors apart from providing better understanding on the correlation of marker biomolecules with human health and well-being.

Abstract:The two-photon ionization (TPI) process (308 and 266 nm) of stilbene dendrimers having a stilbene core and benzyl ether type dendrons has been investigated in an acetonitrile and 1,2-dichloroethane mixture (3:1) in order to elucidate the dendrimer effects. The quantum yield of the formation of stilbene core radical cation during the 308-nm TPI was independent of the dendron generation of the dendrimers, whereas a generation dependence of the quantum yield of the radical cation was observed during the 266-nm TPI, where both the stilbene core and benzyl ether type dendron were ionized, suggesting that the subsequent hole transfer occurs from the dendron to the stilbene core, and that the dendron acts as a hole-harvesting antenna. The neutralization rate of the stilbene core radical cation with the chloride ion, generated from the dissociative electron capture by 1,2-dichloroethane, decreased with the increase in the dendrimer generation, suggesting that the dendron is an effective shield of the stilbene core radical cation against the chloride ion.

Abstract:In this paper, Dutta et. al. review the past, present, and future of 3D printable wearable bioelectronic interfaces for healthcare monitoring and disease diagnosis. The authors also place emphasis on design and fabrication strategies in light of 3D printing technology, with the hope of accelerating the development of next‐generation wearables. In recent years, additive manufacturing tools, such as 3D printing, has gained enormous attention in biomedical engineering for developing ionotropic devices, flexible electronics, skin‐electronic interfaces, and wearable sensors with extremely high precision and sensing accuracy. Such printed bioelectronics are innovative and can be used as multi‐stimuli response platforms for human health monitoring and disease diagnosis. This review systematically discusses the past, present, and future of the various printable and stretchable soft bioelectronics for precision medicine. The potential of various naturally and chemically derived conductive biopolymer inks and their nanocomposites with tunable physico‐chemical properties is also highlighted, which is crucial for bioelectronics fabrication. Then, the design strategies of various printable sensors for human body sensing are summarized. In conclusion, the perspectives on the future advanced bioelectronics are described, which will be helpful, particularly in the field of nano/biomedicine. An in‐depth knowledge of materials design to functional aspects of printable bioelectronics is demonstrated, with an aim to accelerate the development of next‐generation wearables.

Abstract:<p>The consumer demand for flexible wearables has increased rapidly with the advent of recent commercial health monitoring systems. The progress in wearable electronics for monitoring physiological parameters in the healthcare industry is rapid and its adaptation is having a positive impact on society. Physiological parameters are important health indicators and their monitoring could effectively enable early detection of disease. This would also help reduce the number of more severe health problems, in disease prevention and lower the overall public sector health cost. Clinical devices for measurement of these parameters are also traditionally non-wearable. Therefore, companies and researchers are focused on the development of new materials and related manufacturing methods which will enable specific wearable health sensors with a high degree of robustness, repeatability and accuracy. On the development of printed physiological signal monitoring devices, much progress has been achieved in recent years. Eventhough several reviews have been presented on flexible and wearable electronics, a detailed summary of the recent progresses on the specific class of printed physiological signal monitoring sensing devices has not been reported. In this review, recent progress and challenges on the functional inks and substrate materials for mass scale production and customization of printed flexible and wearable physiological signal monitoring sensor devices are summarized.</p>

Abstract:The development of flexible electronic technology has led to significant advancements in wearable sensors. In the past decades, wearable chemosensors have received much attention from researchers worldwide due to their high portability, flexibility, lightweight, and adaptability. It allows real-time access to the user's physiological status at the molecular level to analyze their health status. Therefore, it can be widely used in the field of precision medicine. This review introduces the sensing mechanisms of wearable chemosensors and recent progress in wearable sweat and interstitial fluid-based chemosensors. The complexities of wearable chemosensors are not to be underestimated, as there are considerable challenges in this field. This review aims to shed light on the difficulties associated with designing wearable sweat and interstitial fluid-based chemosensors and their potential development directions.
