Abstract:The direct hydrogenation of greenhouse gas CO2 to higher alcohols (C2+OH) provides a new route for the production of high-value chemicals. Due to the difficulty of C-C coupling, the formation of higher alcohols is more difficult compared to that of other compounds. In this review, we summarize recent advances in the development of multifunctional catalysts, including noble metal catalysts, Co-based catalysts, Cu-based catalysts, Fe-based catalysts, and tandem catalysts for the direct hydrogenation of CO2 to higher alcohols. Possible reaction mechanisms are discussed based on the structure–activity relationship of the catalysts. The reaction-coupling strategy holds great potential to regulate the reaction network. The effects of the reaction conditions on CO2 hydrogenation are also analyzed. Finally, we discuss the challenges and potential opportunities for the further development of direct CO2 hydrogenation to higher alcohols.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to produce high - value - added higher alcohols (C₂⁺OH), such as ethanol, propanol, etc., through the direct hydrogenation of carbon dioxide (CO₂). Specifically, the article mainly focuses on the following aspects: 1. **Improving reaction efficiency and selectivity**: Due to the chemical inertness of carbon dioxide and the difficulty of carbon - carbon coupling (C - C coupling), directly hydrogenating carbon dioxide to higher alcohols faces many challenges. Traditional catalysts often lead to more by - products and lower selectivity of the target product. Therefore, the research aims to develop efficient multi - functional catalysts to improve the efficiency and selectivity of carbon dioxide conversion to higher alcohols. 2. **Understanding the reaction mechanism**: In order to better design and optimize catalysts, it is necessary to deeply understand the reaction mechanism of carbon dioxide hydrogenation to produce higher alcohols. The article discusses the performance of different catalysts in the structure - activity relationship and proposes possible reaction paths. 3. **Optimizing reaction conditions**: Reaction conditions (such as temperature, pressure, H₂/CO₂ ratio, etc.) have a significant impact on the results of carbon dioxide hydrogenation. The article analyzes how these conditions affect the performance of catalysts and explores the selection of optimal reaction conditions. 4. **Meeting the challenges in industrial applications**: Although certain progress has been made in laboratory research, there are still many challenges in achieving industrial applications, such as the cost of catalysts, stability, and the feasibility of large - scale production. The article summarizes the current research progress and points out the future development directions and opportunities. ### Formula representation Several important reaction equations involved in the article are as follows: - Reverse water - gas shift reaction (RWGS): \[ \text{CO}_2+\text{H}_2\leftrightarrow\text{CO}+\text{H}_2\text{O} \] \[ \Delta G_{298K} = 28.6 \, \text{kJ/mol}, \quad \Delta H_{298K} = 41.1 \, \text{kJ/mol}, \quad K_{298K} = 9.67\times 10^{-6} \] - Methane synthesis reaction: \[ \text{CO}_2 + 4\text{H}_2\leftrightarrow\text{CH}_4+2\text{H}_2\text{O} \] \[ \Delta G_{298K}=-113.5 \, \text{kJ/mol}, \quad \Delta H_{298K}=-165.0 \, \text{kJ/mol}, \quad K_{298K} = 7.79\times 10^{19} \] - Ethanol synthesis reaction: \[ 2\text{CO}_2+6\text{H}_2\leftrightarrow\text{C}_2\text{H}_5\text{OH}+3\text{H}_2\text{O} \] \[ \Delta G_{298K}=-32.4 \, \text{kJ/mol}, \quad \Delta H_{298K}=-86.7 \, \text{kJ/mol}, \quad K_{298K} = 4.70\times 10^5 \] Through these formulas, the thermodynamic characteristics of the carbon dioxide hydrogenation reaction and its reaction tendencies under different conditions can be more clearly understood.
