Objective: To evaluate the effect of different concentrations of nanodiamonds (NDs) added to polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) denture base material on Candida albicans adhesion as well as on surface roughness and contact angle. Methodology: Acrylic resin specimens sized 10×10×3 mm3 were prepared and divided into four groups (n=30) according to ND concentration (0%, 0.5%, 1%, 1.5% by wt). Surface roughness was measured with a profilometer, and the contact angle with a goniometer. The effect of NDs on Candida albicans adhesion was evaluated using two methods: 1) slide count and 2) direct culture test. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's post hoc test were used in the statistical analyses. Results: Addition of NDs decreased the Candida albicans count significantly more than in the control group (p<0.05), with a lowest of 1% NDs. Addition of NDs also significantly decreased the surface roughness (p<0.05), but the contact angle remained the same. Incorporation of NDs into the PMMA denture base material effectively reduced Candida albicans adhesion and decreased surface roughness. Conclusion: PMMA/NDs composites could be valuable in the prevention of denture stomatitis, which is considered one of the most common clinical problems among removable denture wearers.

Abstract:Disturbances in mineral and bone metabolism due to loss of kidney function greatly influence morbidity and quality of life, so Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) proposed the concept of chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone disorder (CKD-MBD). Japanese Society for Dialysis Therapy has created guidelines for the management of secondary hyperparathyroidism associated prognosis in hemodialysis patients, and we are managing parathyroid function of hemodialysis patients under this guideline. Bone biopsy is not recommended as part of routine evaluation for CKD-MBD because bone biopsy is the invasive examination. KDIGO proposed new histological classification of renal osteodystrophy, TMV classification, for standardizing a result of bone histomorphometry. We expect that new guideline improve the prognosis of hemodialysis patients.

Abstract:Statement of problem Denture base materials are highly susceptible to microbial colonization, which can lead to denture stomatitis. In addition, patients who sleep with their dentures have an increased chance of contracting pneumonia. Commercially available antimicrobial denture base materials to prevent or combat microbial colonization are lacking. Purpose The purpose of this in vitro study was to determine the effects of K18 quaternary ammonium methacryloxy silane-functionalized filler (K18-Filler) and methyl methacrylate (K18-MMA) on the polymerization of 3D printed denture base material and its esthetic, mechanical, and antimicrobial properties. Material and methods K18-Filler (0%, 10%, 20% w/w) and K18-MMA (0%, 5%, 12.5% w/w) were added to a 3D printable denture base resin (Denture Base Resin, Original Pink; Formlabs Inc.) and 3D printed. Specimens were tested by using the Rockwell 15T hardness, near infrared FTIR monomer-to-polymer degree of conversion (DoC), transparency parameter (TP), color shift, and 3-point bend and by counting colony forming units against Streptococcus aureus, Streptococcus sanguinis and Candida albicans tests. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance with the Tukey-Kramer HSD post hoc test. Results Control resins had significantly higher Rockwell 15T hardness than most of the K18 groups ( P <.05) but had comparable DoC with all K18 groups except one, showing that all groups were well polymerized. Controls had significantly higher TP than most K18 groups, but most K18 groups had ΔE 8. All K18 groups had comparable or greater moduli than the controls, but the controls had significantly higher ultimate transverse strengths than most K18 groups ( P <.05). All 12.5% K18-MMA with K18-Filler groups had significant antimicrobial activity against S. aureus , S. sanguinis , and C. albicans . Conclusions 12.5% K18-MMA and K18-Filler produced 3D printable denture materials with comparable polymerization properties and significant antimicrobial properties against S. mutans , S. sanguinis , and C. albicans . High K18-MMA and K18-Filler concentrations caused significant color shifts and reductions in ultimate strengths.

Abstract:This paper reports on an experiment designed to explore the robustness of the deadline effect in multi period bargaining games using constant and decreasing pies, different time horizons, and constant and alternating roles. Our results indicate that decreasing pies and alternating roles lead to earlier agreements (i.e., attenuate the deadline effect) although only alternating roles significantly reduce the number of conflicts.

Abstract:The cellular mechanisms responsible for enhanced muscle protein breakdown in hospitalized patients, which frequently results in lean body wasting, are unknown. To determine whether the lysosomal, Ca2+-activated, and ubiquitin-proteasome proteolytic pathways are activated, we measured mRNA levels for components of these processes in muscle biopsies from severe head trauma patients. These patients exhibited negative nitrogen balance and increased rates of whole-body protein breakdown (assessed by [13C]leucine infusion) and of myofibrillar protein breakdown (assessed by 3-methylhistidine urinary excretion). Increased muscle mRNA levels for cathepsin D, m-calpain, and critical components of the ubiquitin proteolytic pathway (i.e., ubiquitin, the 14-kDa ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme E2, and proteasome subunits) paralleled these metabolic adaptations. The data clearly support a role for multiple proteolytic processes in increased muscle proteolysis. The ubiquitin proteolytic pathway could be activated by altered glucocorticoid production and/or increased circulating levels of interleukin 1beta and interleukin 6 observed in head trauma patients and account for the breakdown of myofibrillar proteins, as was recently reported in animal studies.
Effect of nanomodified 3D printed photopolymerizable resin on flexural strength, color, and antimicrobial efficacy: An in vitro study

Abstract:Statement of problem Three-dimensional (3D) printing has become popular in dentistry, but studies on the influence of incorporating organic and inorganic nanofillers on 3D printed materials are lacking. Purpose The purpose of this in vitro study was to assess the flexural strength, color, and antimicrobial efficacy of 3D printed photopolymerizable resin upon adding titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO 2 NPs) and silanized chitosan nanoparticles ( s CS NPs). Material and methods A stereolithographic material (VarseoSmile Crown plus; Bego) was used as a control group (VSC resin), and 3 nanocomposite resin groups were prepared by adding nanoparticles as follow: titanium dioxide group (VSC resin + 0.4% wt. TiO 2 NPs), chitosan group (VSC resin + 0.4% wt. s CS NPs), and hybrid group (VSC resin + 0.2% wt. TiO 2 NPs + 0.2% wt. s CS NPs). A total of 132 specimens were designed by using a free computer-aided design software program, printed, postpolymerized, and divided into 4 groups. The nanocomposite resins were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Bar shaped specimens (n=44) were tested for 3-point flexural strength using a universal testing machine followed by the color measurement of disk-shaped specimens (n=44) with a spectrophotometer. Antimicrobial capacity was measured with Streptococcus mutans , and absorbance was measured using a microplate reader (n=44). Statistical assessments were made with 1-way ANOVA followed by the Tukey post hoc test with Bonferroni adjustment (α=.05). Results The hybrid group recorded the highest mean value of flexural strength 135.51 MPa, showing a significant difference compared with that of the control group ( P =.022). Regarding color, the mean ∆E 00 for titanium was 1.18, for chitosan was 4.26, and for the hybrid group was 3.23 ( P <.001). The optical density of the chitosan (2.42) was significantly higher than that of the titanium 1.36 ( P =.007) and that of the control 1.63 ( P =.042). Conclusions The incorporation of nanofillers resulted in an increase in flexural strength, but it adversely affected the color of nanocomposite resins. Antimicrobial efficacy was improved by incorporating titanium nanofillers.

Abstract:Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) is commonly used for dental dentures, but it has the drawback of promoting oral health risks due to oral bacterial adhesion. Recently, various nanoparticles have been incorporated into PMMA to tackle these issues. This study aims to investigate the mechanophysical and antimicrobial adhesive properties of a denture resin by incorporating of nanoclay into PMMA. Specimens were prepared by adding 0, 1, 2, and 4 wt % surface-modified nanoclay (Sigma) to self-polymerizing PMMA denture resin. These specimens were then evaluated using FTIR, TGA/DTG, and FE-SEM with EDS. Various mechanical and surface physical properties, including nanoindentation, were measured and compared with those of pure PMMA. Antiadhesion experiments were conducted by applying a Candida albicans (ATCC 11006) suspension to the surface of the specimens. The antiadhesion activity of C. albicans was confirmed through a yeast-wall component (mannan) and mRNA-seq analysis. The bulk mechanical properties of nanoclay-PMMA composites were decreased compared to those of pure PMMA, while the flexural strength and modulus met the ISO 20795-1 requirement. However, there were no significant differences in the nanoindentation hardness and elastic modulus. The surface energy revealed a significant decrease at 4 wt % nanoclay-PMMA. The antiadhesion effect of Candida albicans was evident along with nanoclay content in the nanocomposites and confirmed by the reduced attachment of mannan on nanoclay-PMMA composites. mRNA-seq analysis supported overall transcriptome changes in altering attachment and metabolism behaviors on the surface. The nanoclay-PMMA materials showed a lower surface energy as the content increased, leading to an antiadhesion effect against Candida albicans. These findings indicate that incorporating nanoclay into PMMA surfaces could be a valuable strategy for preventing the fungal biofilm formation of denture base materials.

Abstract:Currently, polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) is the most popular denture base material. Most fractures of dentures that occur during function are due to its insufficient mechanical strength. The major drawbacks of PMMA are insufficient ductility, strength, and viscoelastic behavior. The purpose of this study was to evaluate a polymethylmethacrylate denture base material modified with TiO₂ nanoparticles in terms of nanomechanical, creep-recovery, and relaxation. Additionally, the effects of addition TiO₂ nanoparticles on the thermal and antimicrobial adhesion behaviors were investigated. Differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis indicated that the effect of small amounts of TiO₂ nanoparticles (1 wt. %, 2 wt. %, and 3 wt. %) on the degradation behavior of PMMA denture bases was insignificant. The nanomechanical test results of the PMMA and PMMA/TiO₂ nanocomposites indicated that the hardness and modulus in the nanoscale range improved due to TiO₂ addition. At a 1200-nm penetration depth, the modulus increased by 10%, 16%, and 29% and hardness increased by 18%, 24%, and 35% with the addition of 1 wt. %, 2 wt. %, and 3 wt. % TiO₂, respectively. Furthermore, the creep-recovery and relaxation behaviors of PMMA were significantly improved due to the addition of TiO₂. The creep strain decreased from 1.41% to 1.06%, 0.66%, and 0.49% with the addition of 1 wt. %, 2 wt. %, and 3 wt. % TiO₂, respectively. The relaxation test results showed that the initial stress under 1% strain improved to 19.9, 21.2, and 22 MPa with the addition of 1 wt. %, 2 wt. %, and 3 wt. % TiO₂, respectively. The improvement in the nanohardness, modulus, creep recovery, and relaxation behavior of PMMA due to the addition of TiO₂ nanoparticles indicated the role of the nanoparticles in increasing the PMMA matrix stiffness by reducing its mobility and free volume. TiO₂ nanoparticles also improved the antimicrobial behavior of PMMA by significantly reducing bacterial adherence with increasing TiO₂ ratio.

3D printed denture base material: The effect of incorporating TiO2 nanoparticles and artificial ageing on the physical and mechanical properties

Abstract:Objectives: To evaluate the physical and mechanical properties of three-dimensional (3D) printed denture base resin incorporating TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs), subjected to a physical ageing process. Methods: Acrylic denture base samples were prepared by a Stereolithography (SLA) 3D printing technique reinforced with different concentrations (0.10, 0.25, 0.50, and 0.75) of silanated TiO2 NPs. The resulting nanocomposite materials were characterized in terms of degree of conversion (DC), and sorption/solubility flexural strength, impact strength, Vickers hardness and Martens hardness and compared with unmodified resin and conventional heat-cured (HC) material. The nanocomposites were reassessed after subjecting them to ageing in artificial saliva. A fractured surface was studied under a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Results: The addition of TiO2 NPs into 3D-printed resin significantly improved flexural strength/modulus, impact strength, Vickers hardness, and DC, while also slightly enhancing Martens hardness compared to the unmodified resin. Sorption values did not show any improvements, while solubility was reduced significantly. The addition of 0.10 wt% NPs provided the highest performance amongst the other concentrations, and 0.75 wt% NPs showed the lowest. Although ageing degraded the materials' performance to a certain extent, the trends remained the same. SEM images showed a homogenous distribution of the NPs at lower concentrations (0.10 and 0.25 wt%) but revealed agglomeration of the NPs with the higher concentrations (0.50 and 0.75 wt%). Significance: The outcomes of this study suggested that the incorporation of TiO2 NPs (0.10 wt%) into 3D-printed denture base material showed superior performance compared to the unmodified 3D-printed resin even after ageing in artificial saliva. The nanocomposite has the potential to extend service life of denture bases in future clinical use.

Abstract:The future of manufacturing applications in three-dimensional (3D) printing depends on the improvement and the development of materials suitable for 3D printing technology. This study aims to develop an applicable and convenient protocol for light-curing resin used in 3D industry, which could enhance antibacterial and mechanical properties of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) resin through the combination of nano-fillers of surface modified titanium dioxide (TiO2) and micro-fillers of polyetheretherketone (PEEK). PMMA-based composite resins with various additions of TiO2 and PEEK were prepared and submitted to characterizations including mechanical properties, distribution of the fillers (TiO2 or/and PEEK) on the fractured surface, cytotoxicity, antibacterial activity, and blood compatibility assessment. These results indicated that the reinforced composite resins of PMMA (TiO2-1%-PEEK-1%) possessed the most optimized properties compared to the other groups. In addition, we found the addition of 1% of TiO2 would be an effective amount to enhance both mechanical and antibacterial properties for PMMA composite resin. Furthermore, the model printed by PMMA (TiO2-1%-PEEK-1%) composite resin showed a smooth surface and a precise resolution, indicating this functional dental restoration material would be a suitable light-curing resin in 3D industry.

Abstract:The introduction of nanomaterials into polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) resin has been effective for mechanically reinforcing PMMA for application in oral denture bases. However, these methods cannot simultaneously improve the mechanical and antibacterial properties, which limits widespread clinical application. Here, we self-assembled binary nanocomposites of boron nitride nanosheets (h-BNNs) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) as nanofillers and incorporated the nanofillers into PMMA. The aim of this study was to achieve antibacterial effects while significantly improving the mechanical properties of PMMA and provide a theoretical basis for further clinical application. We employed scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy (Raman), Ultraviolet visible spectrum (UV) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) to investigate the microscopic morphology and composition of PMMA containing nanocomposites with different mass fraction. In addition, the content of the h-BNNs/AgNPs was 1 wt%, and the compressive strength and flexural strength of pure PMMA were improved by 53.5% and 56.7%, respectively. When the concentration of the nanocomposite in the PMMA resin was 1.4 wt%, the antibacterial rate was 92.1%. Overall, synergistically reinforcing PMMA composite resin with a multi-dimensional nanocomposite structure provided a new perspective for expanding not only the application of resins in clinical settings but also the research and development of new composite resins.

Effect of addition of titanium dioxide nanoparticles on the antimicrobial properties, surface roughness and surface hardness of polymethyl methacrylate: A Systematic Review.

Abstract:Background: Polymethyl Methacrylate (PMMA) denture-base resins have poor surface properties that facilitates microbial adhesion causing denture stomatitis. This systematic review aims to evaluate the effect of different sizes and percentages of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2NP) on the antimicrobial property, surface roughness and surface hardness of PMMA denture base resin. Methods: A systematic search of English peer-reviewed articles, clinical trial registries, grey literature databases and other online sources was performed using the PRISMA-S Guidelines for In-Vivo and In-Vitro studies. Qualitative data synthesis was performed to analyse sample dimensions, acrylic used, treatments of nanoparticles, methods used for testing and effect of size and percentage of nanoparticle. Risk of bias assessment was done using modified Cochrane risk of bias tool. Results: Out of 1376 articles, 15 were included. TiO 2 NP of size less than 30 nm was most frequently used. Both antimicrobial property and surface hardness improved irrespective of the size of the added TiO 2 NP. Three studies reported increase in the surface roughness with less than 50 nm TiO 2 NP. 3% TiO 2 NP was most frequently used. On increasing the percentage, three studies reported an increase in antimicrobial property, while two studies found no change. With TiO 2 NP greater than or equal to 3%, six studies reported an increase in surface hardness, while two reported increase in surface roughness. Large methodological variations were observed across studies. All studies except one were of moderate quality. Conclusions: On addition of TiO 2 NP to heat polymerized PMMA, the antimicrobial property and surface hardness improved irrespective of the size of the TiO 2 NP, however, addition of nanoparticles less than 50 nm increased the surface roughness. Increasing the percentage of TiO 2 NP increased the surface hardness but did not always increase the antimicrobial property. Addition of 3% TiO 2 NP provided optimum results with regards to antimicrobial effect and surface hardness, but increase in the surface roughness.

Microhardness and wear behavior of nanodiamond‐reinforced nanocomposites for dental applications

Abstract:Dental resins reinforced with nanodiamond particles for improved wear and microhardness properties. In polymer‐based dental composites, wear is a three‐body wear system mainly abrasive, because of the food particles and wear products suspended in the oral cavity, which are transferred to the microcavities of the surface of the replacements. Due to this fact, the incorporation of nanodiamond as reinforcement in these polymer–matrix composites, which promotes the creation of a solid lubricant tribofilm surface could be advantageous. With the reinforcement of nanodiamonds, BisGMA/TEGDMA‐based composites increase their microhardness by 95%–420%. A maximum hardness exceeding 65 HV is achieved with a reinforcement of 3.2 wt%. The specific wear rate of neat BisGMA/TEGDMA is near 10−4 mm3/Nm and the Archard's coefficient is 2.6 × 105. The incorporation of a content of 1.6 wt% ND is enough to cause a diminution of ~78% in the friction coefficient and a reduction of the specific wear rate and Archard's coefficient of ~50%. Nevertheless, the addition of relatively high contents reduces the effectiveness of photoinitiation and photocuring, which is related to the scattering and absorption of light radiation by ND. This causes a significant decline in elastic properties starting at 50 μm from the surface. Highlights Photocuring polymer resin was successfully reinforced with nanodiamonds. Microhardness increases from 95% up to 420%, close to commercial composites. Friction coefficient and wear rate are reduced with 1.6 wt% nanodiamonds. High levels of reinforcement reduce the effectiveness of photocuring.

This study aimed to evaluate the applicability of a selection of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) estimating equations based on serum creatinine (SCr) and serum cystatin C in a Chinese population. Material and methods. Estimated GFR values from 10 equations were compared with reference GFR (rGFR) from the 99mTc-DTPA renal dynamic imaging method. The study enrolled 569 Chinese participants (41.5% women, 53.5 ± 16.9 years, range 19–92 years), with mean rGFR 74.80 ± 26.10 (range 9.8–146.8 ml/min/1.73 m2). Results. Bland–Altman analysis illustrated that the 95% agreement limits of all the equations surpassed the acceptable tolerance (<60 ml/min/1.73 m2), of which the MacIsaac equation was the closest one, reaching 71.7 ml/min/1.73 m2. Linear regression analysis also demonstrated a consistent result. When assessed in all participants, the accuracy of the six equations reached and exceeded the acceptable level (≥70%), of which the Shanghai and MacIsaac equations gained more accuracy than others. When compared in subgroups, the Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI), MacIsaac and Cockcroft–Gault (CG) equations were optimal for rGFR stages ≥ 90 ml/min/1.73 m2, 30–89 ml/min/1.73 m2 and < 30 ml/min/1.73 m2, respectively. Conclusion. The results demonstrated that further improvement is needed for the selected 10 equations. Not all the cystatin C equations were superior to SCr equations. They have their own applicability at various GFR levels. At present, the CKD-EPI, MacIsaac and CG equations may be applied to evaluate GFR in normal, mild to moderate and severe kidney function, respectively.
Enhancing 3D-printed denture base resins: A review of material innovations

Abstract:The limited physical and mechanical properties of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), the current gold standard, necessitates exploring improved denture base materials. While three-dimensional (3D) printing offers accuracy, efficiency, and patient comfort advantages, achieving superior mechanics in 3D-printed denture resins remains challenging despite good biocompatibility and esthetics. This review investigates the potential of innovative materials to address the limitations of 3D-printed denture base materials. Thus, this article is organized to provide a comprehensive overview of recent efforts to enhance 3D-printed denture base materials, highlighting advancements. It critically examines the impact of incorporating various nanoparticles (zirconia, titania, etc.) on these materials' physical and mechanical properties. Additionally, it delves into recent strategies for nanofiller surface treatment and biocompatibility evaluation and explores potential future directions for polymeric composites in denture applications. The review finds that adding nanoparticles significantly improves performance compared to unmodified resins, and properties can be extensively enhanced through specific modifications, particularly silanized nanoparticles. Optimizing 3D-printed denture acrylics requires a multifaceted approach, with future research prioritizing novel nanomaterials and surface modification techniques for a novel generation of superior performance, esthetically pleasing, and long-lasting dentures.
Mechanical properties and wear performance of denture base polymethyl methacrylate reinforced with nano Al2O3

Abstract:Journal of Thermoplastic Composite Materials, Ahead of Print. Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) has been widely used as a material in dentistry. The deterioration of pure PMMA denture teeth is a significant issue that can alter the vertical dimensions of dentures. This study investigates the effect of aluminum oxide (Al2O3) nano-ceramic addition as reinforcements into the heat-cure acrylic resin denture teeth. The PMMA was reinforced with Al2O3 concentrations of 1, 3, 5, and 10 wt.%. The PMMA without ceramic addition is produced for comparison purposes. The color change, densification, microhardness, and compressive properties of the produced PMMA resin and its composites were investigated to detect the effect of Al2O3 nano ceramic addition on the physical and mechanical properties. Furthermore, the microstructure was also performed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis. A chewing simulator was utilized to conduct two-body wear testing, employing a human enamel antagonist. The wear behavior of the PMMA and their composites were assessed by measuring the weight loss after submitting them to 37,500 cycles. The SEM microstructure analysis revealed sound specimens of PMMA reinforced with 0, 1, 3, and 5 wt.% Al2O3 without any porosity and micro defects using the applied production procedures. In contrast, the aggregated sites and propagation of cracks were detected for the PMMA/10 wt.% Al2O3 specimen. The densification and hardness properties of the produced PMMA composites improved with increasing the Al2O3 additions. The microhardness of PMMA/10 wt.% Al2O3 improved by around 233% compared to the PMMA matrix. The higher compressive properties were detected for the PMMA/5 wt.% Al2O3 composite specimen with ultimate compressive strength (UCS) of 54.75 MPa and yield strength (YS) of 45.6 MPa and improved than the PMMA matrix by around 98 % and 117 %, respectively. In addition, incorporating Al2O3 nano-ceramic particles into a PMMA matrix revealed a significant improvement in the wear resistance of the produced composites compared to the PMMA matrix.

Abstract:Background: A major disadvantage of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) acrylic resins is susceptibility to biofilm accumulation. The incorporation of antimicrobial agents is a reliable prevention technique. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of incorporating dimethylaminohexadecyl methacrylate (DMAHDM) and/or 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) into heat-polymerized (HP) and 3D-printed (3DP) denture base materials on the flexural strength, modulus of elasticity, and surface hardness. Methods: DMAHDM and/or MPC were mixed with the acrylic resin liquid of a heat-polymerized (ProBase Hot) and a 3D printed (NextDent Denture 3D) material at mass fractions of 1.5% and 3% and a combination of 3% MPC and 1.5% DMAHDM. Results: Significant differences in mechanical properties between the control and experimental groups have been detected (p-value < 0.0001). In HP materials, the addition of DMAHDM and/or MPC generally decreased the flexural strength, from (151.18 MPa) in G1 down to (62.67 MPa) in G5, and surface hardness, from (18.05 N/mm2) down to (10.07 N/mm2) in G5. Conversely, in 3DP materials, flexural strength was slightly enhanced, from (58.22 MPa) in G1 up to (62.76 MPa) in G6, although surface hardness was consistently reduced, from (13.57 N/mm2) down to (5.29 N/mm2) in G5. Conclusion: It is recommended to carefully optimize the concentrations of DMAHDM and/or MPC to maintain mechanical integrity.

Abstract:Polymers are the most commonly used material for three-dimensional (3D) printing in dentistry; however, the high porosity and water absorptiveness of the material adversely influence biofilm formation on the surface of the 3D-printed dental prostheses. This study evaluated the effects of a newly developed chlorhexidine (CHX)-loaded polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-based coating material on the surface microstructure, surface wettability and antibacterial activity of 3D-printing dental polymer. First, mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN) were used to encapsulate CHX, and the combination was added to PDMS to synthesize the antibacterial agent-releasing coating substance. Then, a thin coating film was formed on the 3D-printing polymer specimens using oxygen plasma and thermal treatment. The results show that using the coating substance significantly reduced the surface irregularity and increased the hydrophobicity of the specimens. Remarkably, the culture media containing coated specimens had a significantly lower number of bacterial colony formation units than the noncoated specimens, thereby indicating the effective antibacterial activity of the coating.

Abstract:Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is often used in restorative dentistry for its easy fabrication, aesthetics, and low cost for interim restorations. However, poor mechanical properties to withstand complex masticatory forces are a concern for clinicians. Therefore, this study aimed to modify a commercially available PMMA-based temporary restorative material by adding TiO2 and ZrO2 nanoparticles in different percentages as fillers and to investigate its physio-mechanical properties. Different percentages (0, 0.5, 1.5, and 3.0 wt%) of TiO2 and ZrO2 nanoparticles were mixed with the pristine PMMA resin (powder to liquid ratio: 1 : 1) and homogenized using high-speed mixer. The composites obtained were analyzed for their flexural strength (F.S.), elastic modulus (E.M.), Vickers hardness (H.V.), surface roughness Ra, morphology and water contact angle (WCA). The mean average was determined with standard deviation (SD) to analyze the results, and a basic comparison test was conducted. The results inferred that adding a small amount (0.5 wt%) of TiO2 and ZrO2 nanoparticles (NPs) could significantly enhance the physio-mechanical and morphological characteristics of PMMA interim restorations. EM and surface hardness increased with increasing filler content, with 3.0 wt.% ZrO2 exhibiting the highest EM (3851.28 MPa), followed by 3.0 wt.% TiO2 (3632.34 MPa). The WCA was significantly reduced from 91.32 ± 4.21 ° (control) to 66.30 ± 4.23 ° for 3.0 wt.% ZrO2 and 69.88 ± 3.55 ° for 3.0 wt.% TiO2. Therefore, TiO2 and ZrO2 NPs could potentially be used as fillers to improve the performance of PMMA and similar interim restorations.
