Abstract:Future electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings in body sensor networks are prone to be contaminated by muscle activity due to the mobile, long-term, and pervasive monitoring needs. In this paper, a novel approach for muscle artifact removal in EEG is proposed by combining ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) with canonical correlation analysis (CCA), termed as EEMD-CCA. This approach can make good use of inter-channel information. We tested the approach on simulated, semi-simulated, and real-life data sets, respectively. The approach outperformed state-of-the-art techniques, including independent component analysis, CCA, and EEMD-ICA. Statistical tests demonstrate the significance (p < 0.01) in (semi)-simulated studies. The relative root-mean-squared error can be reduced to around 0.3 and the average correlation coefficient can be kept above 0.9 even when the contamination is quite heavy (SNR < 2). Besides, we also tested the approach on few-channel EEG randomly selected from multichannel EEG, and obtained competitive results. The computational cost satisfies the real-time requirement. This indicates that the proposed EEMD-CCA approach is applicable under both multichannel and few-channel settings. It is an effective and efficient signal processing tool for enhancing the signal of interest in both hospital and home healthcare body sensor networks.
Independent Component Analysis of Gait-Related Movement Artifact Recorded using EEG Electrodes during Treadmill Walking

Abstract:There has been a recent surge in the use of electroencephalography (EEG) as a tool for mobile brain imaging due to its portability and fine time resolution. When EEG is combined with independent component analysis (ICA) and source localization techniques, it can model electrocortical activity as arising from temporally independent signals located in spatially distinct cortical areas. However, for mobile tasks, it is not clear how movement artifacts influence ICA and source localization. We devised a novel method to collect pure movement artifact data (devoid of any electrophysiological signals) with a 256-channel EEG system. We first blocked true electrocortical activity using a silicone swim cap. Over the silicone layer, we placed a simulated scalp with electrical properties similar to real human scalp. We collected EEG movement artifact signals from ten healthy, young subjects wearing this setup as they walked on a treadmill at speeds from 0.4-1.6 m/s. We performed ICA and dipole fitting on the EEG movement artifact data to quantify how accurately these methods would identify the artifact signals as non-neural. ICA and dipole fitting accurately localized 99% of the independent components in non-neural locations or lacked dipolar characteristics. The remaining 1% of sources had locations within the brain volume and low residual variances, but had topographical maps, power spectra, time courses, and event related spectral perturbations typical of non-neural sources. Caution should be exercised when interpreting ICA for data that includes semi-periodic artifacts including artifact arising from human walking. Alternative methods are needed for the identification and separation of movement artifact in mobile EEG signals, especially methods that can be performed in real time. Separating true brain signals from motion artifact could clear the way for EEG brain computer interfaces for assistance during mobile activities, such as walking.

Abstract:More neuroscience researchers are using scalp electroencephalography (EEG) to measure electrocortical dynamics during human locomotion and other types of movement. Motion artifacts corrupt the EEG and mask underlying neural signals of interest. The cause of motion artifacts in EEG is often attributed to electrode motion relative to the skin, but few studies have examined EEG signals under head motion. In the current study, we tested how motion artifacts are affected by the overall mass and surface area of commercially available electrodes, as well as how cable sway contributes to motion artifacts. To provide a ground-truth signal, we used a gelatin head phantom with embedded antennas broadcasting electrical signals, and recorded EEG with a commercially available electrode system. A robotic platform moved the phantom head through sinusoidal displacements at different frequencies (0-2 Hz). Results showed that a larger electrode surface area can have a small but significant effect on improving EEG signal quality during motion and that cable sway is a major contributor to motion artifacts. These results have implications in the development of future hardware for mobile brain imaging with EEG.

Abstract:This article examines the knowledge component in cluster literature from its origins to the present. A chronological perspective is deployed in order to shed light on how the concept of clusters has evolved. Given the increasing interest in clusters as knowledge repositories, and the apparent conviction among policymakers of the manageability of clusters, lessons learned from knowledge management (KM) practices in organizations might well be applied to the many policy efforts aimed at governing clusters. We argue that introducing KM initiatives on a regional level should be accompanied by an understanding of the possible downfalls that are associated with KM failures.

Abstract:Electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings are often contaminated by electromyographic (EMG) artifacts, especially when recording during movement. Existing methods to remove EMG artifacts include independent component analysis (ICA), and other high-order statistical methods. However, these methods can not effectively remove most of EMG artifacts. Here, we proposed a modified ICA model for EMG artifacts removal in the EEG, which is called EMG Removal by Adding Sources of EMG (ERASE). In this new approach, additional channels of real EMG from neck and head muscles (reference artifacts) were added as inputs to ICA in order to "force" the most power from EMG artifacts into a few independent components (ICs). The ICs containing EMG artifacts (the "artifact ICs") were identified and rejected using an automated procedure. Simulation results showed ERASE removed EMG artifacts from EEG significantly more effectively than conventional ICA. Subsequently, EEG was collected from 8 healthy participants while they moved their hands to test the realistic efficacy of this approach. Results showed that ERASE successfully removed EMG artifacts (on average, about 75% of EMG artifacts were removed when using real EMGs as reference artifacts) while preserving the expected EEG features related to movement. We also tested the ERASE procedure using simulated EMGs as reference artifacts (about 63% of EMG artifacts removed). Compared to conventional ICA, ERASE removed on average 26% more EMG artifacts from EEG. These results indicate that using additional real or simulated EMG sources can increase the effectiveness of ICA in removing EMG artifacts from EEG. Combined with automated artifact IC rejection, ERASE also minimizes potential user bias.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Contamination of scalp measurement by tonic muscle artefacts, even in resting positions, is an unavoidable issue in EEG recording. These artefacts add significant energy to the recorded signals, particularly at high frequencies. To enable reliable interpretation of subcortical brain activity, it is necessary to detect and discard this contamination.NEW METHOD: We introduce a new automatic muscle-removal approach based on the traditional Blind Source Separation-Canonical Correlation Analysis (BSS-CCA) method and the spectral slope of its components. We show that CCA-based muscle-removal methods can discriminate between signals with high correlation coefficients (brain, mains artefact) and signals with low correlation coefficients (white noise, muscle). We also show that typical BSS-CCA components are not purely from one source, but are mixtures from multiple sources, limiting the performance of BSS-CCA in artefact removal. We demonstrate, using our paralysis dataset, improved performance using BSS-CCA followed by spectral-slope rejection.RESULT: This muscle removal approach can reduce high-frequency muscle contamination of EEG, especially at peripheral channels, while preserving steady-state brain responses in cognitive tasks.COMPARISON WITH EXISTING METHODS: This approach is automatic and can be applied on any sample of data easily. The results show its performance is comparable with the ICA method in removing muscle contamination and has significantly lower computational complexity.CONCLUSION: We identify limitations of the traditional BSS-CCA approach to artefact removal in EEG, propose and test an extension based on spectral slope that makes it automatic and improves its performance, and results in performance comparable to competitors such as ICA-based artefact removal.

Abstract:Despite the progress in the development of innovative EEG acquisition systems, their use in dynamic applications is still limited by motion artifacts compromising the interpretation of the collected signals. Therefore, extensive research on the genesis of motion artifacts in EEG recordings is still needed to optimize existing technologies, shedding light on possible solutions to overcome the current limitations. We identified three potential sources of motion artifacts occurring at three different levels of a traditional biopotential acquisition chain: the skin-electrode interface, the connecting cables between the detection and the acquisition systems, and the electrode-amplifier system. The identified sources of motion artifacts were modelled starting from experimental observations carried out on EEG signals. Consequently, we designed customized EEG electrode systems aiming at experimentally disentangling the possible causes of motion artifacts. Both analytical and experimental observations indicated two main residual sites responsible for motion artifacts: the connecting cables between the electrodes and the amplifier and the sudden changes in electrode-skin impedance due to electrode movements. We concluded that further advancements in EEG technology should focus on the transduction stage of the biopotentials amplification chain, such as the electrode technology and its interfacing with the acquisition system.

Abstract:Electroencephalography (EEG) has been widely used for studying brain function. As cortical signals recorded by the EEG are very weak, they are often obscured by motion artifacts and various non-brain physiological activities, such as eye movement, heart rhythms, and muscle activity, adversely affecting subsequent analysis and interpretation. Over the past decades, a number of techniques have been developed for preprocessing EEG recordings to improve the signal-to-noise ratio. However, based on our extensive literature survey, despite an increasing trend recently, only 14.72% of published studies on EEG preprocessing were involved with the removal of electromygraphic (EMG) artifacts. Given that ambulatory healthcare systems are continuously emerging, artifacts induced by muscle contraction become unavoidable, whereas in the past data tended to be collected in well-controlled clinical/laboratory settings. Motivated by the fact that EMG artifact removal is becoming an important issue to be addressed, we investigated the state-of-the-art muscle artifact removal methods systematically and comparatively, from the perspective of signal processing. In this review, we first present the signal characteristics from brain and muscle activity, and highlight the importance of this issue for subsequent artifact removal. We then provide an overview and taxonomy of representative methods. Based on the results in reported studies, we describe the pros and cons of different methods and give suggestions on selecting a suitable technique in different scenarios (e.g., single-channel, few-channel, and multichannel). Finally, we discuss remaining challenges and provide feasible recommendations for further exploration in this field.

Abstract:Electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings are often contaminated with muscle artifacts. This disturbing muscular activity strongly affects the visual analysis of EEG and impairs the results of EEG signal processing such as brain connectivity analysis. If multichannel EEG recordings are available, then there exist a considerable range of methods which can remove or to some extent suppress the distorting effect of such artifacts. Yet to our knowledge, there is no existing means to remove muscle artifacts from single-channel EEG recordings. Moreover, considering the recently increasing need for biomedical signal processing in ambulatory situations, it is crucially important to develop single-channel techniques. In this work, we propose a simple, yet effective method to achieve the muscle artifact removal from single-channel EEG, by combining ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) with multiset canonical correlation analysis (MCCA). We demonstrate the performance of the proposed method through numerical simulations and application to real EEG recordings contaminated with muscle artifacts. The proposed method can successfully remove muscle artifacts without altering the recorded underlying EEG activity. It is a promising tool for real-world biomedical signal processing applications.
Correlating Motion Artifacts in Wet and Dry Electrodes With Head Kinematics During Physical Activities in Ambulatory EEG Monitoring

Abstract:Electroencephalography (EEG) is a common neuroimaging technique used in clinical, research, and consumer technology given its noninvasiveness, high temporal resolution, and sensitivity. The main challenge in ambulatory EEG monitoring is the presence of substantial motion artifacts, especially for high-intensity movements such as running. This study compared motion artifacts in gold-cup, gel, and dry electrodes during different levels of physical activity. Eight healthy participants were instrumented with a wearable EEG cap and an instrumented mouthguard to measure head kinematics. While all electrode types performed similarly in the resting state, dry electrodes showed high-amplitude motion artifacts and worse performance during walking, running, and jumping. EEG-motion coherence was found to be higher for dry electrodes in low-intensity movements (e.g., walking with 0.1–0.5-g head acceleration, where 1 g =9.81 m/s ), but similar across the three electrode types for medium-to-high-intensity movements (e.g., running and jumping with 0.5–3.5-g head acceleration), with peak coherences at up to 20 Hz. Fast walk trials showed the highest linear correlation between EEG signal and head acceleration, indicating potentially better coupling between the head and the electrode at this movement intensity. Our results imply that dry electrodes require further hardware development to mitigate motion artifacts before reliable application in ambulatory monitoring, and wet electrodes also exhibit clear movement-related artifacts in higher intensity movements. Uniquely, we identified EEG-motion coupling as a contributing factor to motion artifact characteristics, and coherence analysis may be a promising approach for motion artifact identification and quantification. Further characterization, quantification, and mitigation of motion artifacts will aid in higher quality measurement and meaningful interpretation of ambulatory EEG signals for clinical and research applications.

Characterizing and Removing Artifacts Using Dual-Layer EEG during Table Tennis

Abstract:Researchers can improve the ecological validity of brain research by studying humans moving in real-world settings. Recent work shows that dual-layer EEG can improve the fidelity of electrocortical recordings during gait, but it is unclear whether these positive results extrapolate to non-locomotor paradigms. For our study, we recorded brain activity with dual-layer EEG while participants played table tennis, a whole-body, responsive sport that could help investigate visuomotor feedback, object interception, and performance monitoring. We characterized artifacts with time-frequency analyses and correlated scalp and reference noise data to determine how well different sensors captured artifacts. As expected, individual scalp channels correlated more with noise-matched channel time series than with head and body acceleration. We then compared artifact removal methods with and without the use of the dual-layer noise electrodes. Independent Component Analysis separated channels into components, and we counted the number of high-quality brain components based on the fit of a dipole model and using an automated labeling algorithm. We found that using noise electrodes for data processing provided cleaner brain components. These results advance technological approaches for recording high fidelity brain dynamics in human behaviors requiring whole body movement, which will be useful for brain science research.

A Preliminary Study of Muscular Artifact Cancellation in Single-Channel EEG

Abstract:Electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings are often contaminated with muscular artifacts that strongly obscure the EEG signals and complicates their analysis. For the conventional case, where the EEG recordings are obtained simultaneously over many EEG channels, there exists a considerable range of methods for removing muscular artifacts. In recent years, there has been an increasing trend to use EEG information in ambulatory healthcare and related physiological signal monitoring systems. For practical reasons, a single EEG channel system must be used in these situations. Unfortunately, there exist few studies for muscular artifact cancellation in single-channel EEG recordings. To address this issue, in this preliminary study, we propose a simple, yet effective, method to achieve the muscular artifact cancellation for the single-channel EEG case. This method is a combination of the ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) and the joint blind source separation (JBSS) techniques. We also conduct a study that compares and investigates all possible single-channel solutions and demonstrate the performance of these methods using numerical simulations and real-life applications. The proposed method is shown to significantly outperform all other methods. It can successfully remove muscular artifacts without altering the underlying EEG activity. It is thus a promising tool for use in ambulatory healthcare systems.
Removing muscle artifacts from EEG data of people with cognitive impairment using high order statistic methods

Abstract:Objective: Often, people with Subjective Cognitive Impairment (SCI), Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and dementia are underwent to Electroencephalography (EEG) in order to evaluate through biological indexes the functional connectivity between brain regions and activation areas during cognitive performance. EEG recordings are frequently contaminated by muscle artifacts, which obscure and complicate their interpretation. These muscle artifacts are particularly difficult to be removed from the EEG in order the latter to be used for further clinical evaluation. In this paper, we proposed a new approach in removing muscle artifacts from EEG data using a method that combines second and high order statistical information. Subjects and Methods: In the proposed system the muscle artifacts of the EEG signal are removed by using the Independent Vector Analysis (IVA). The latter was formulated as a general joint Blind Source Separation (BSS) method that uses both second-order and higher order statistical information and thus takes advantage of both Independent Component Analysis (ICA) and Canonical Correlation Analysis (CCA). Diagonalization methods for IVA in the proposed system were reworked based on SCHUR decomposition offering a faster second order blind identification algorithm that can be used on time demanding applications. Results: The proposed method is evaluated in both simulated and real EEG data. To quantitatively examine the performance of the new method, two objective measures were adopted. The first measure is the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) while the second is the Signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR). Conclusion: The proposed method overcomes with the need of removing muscle artifacts on both realistic simulated EEG data and brain activity from people with cognitive impairment.

Muscle Artifact Removal Toward Mobile SSVEP-Based BCI: A Comparative Study

Abstract:Steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) serves as one of the extensively utilized paradigms for brain–computer interface (BCI). SSVEP-based BCI has advantages of good classification accuracy, high information transfer rate (ITR), and little user training. However, there exist few studies investigating SSVEP-based BCI in the mobile situation, where electroencephalography (EEG) data are inevitably contaminated by muscle activities, and meanwhile, a limited number of channels are preferred. In this study, two major muscle artifact removal schemes are investigated in the dynamic scenario. One scheme adopts state-of-the-art blind source separation (BSS) methods without electromyogram (EMG) reference, while the other utilizes auxiliary EMG channels as a reference in the denoising process. To evaluate the performance of two schemes, we have tested them on real EEG data collected from ten subjects. The results demonstrate that, in the few-channel condition of SSVEP data, there are classification accuracy improvements of 9.93% for the canonical correlation analysis (CCA) indicator and 15.72% for the task-related component analysis (TRCA) indicator after processed by recursive least-squares (RLS) filtering with auxiliary EMG, and in the single-channel condition, there are classification accuracy improvements of 22.00% for the CCA indicator and 24.42% for the TRCA indicator after RLS filtering, averaged across all the subjects and data lengths. However, the BSS-based methods fail to improve the classification accuracies of SSVEP. Thus, it is of necessity to mount additional EMG channels for effective muscle activity suppression. This study provides an insightful suggestion for future real-life BCI applications.

Abstract:Extraction of the movement-related high-gamma (80 - 160 Hz) in electroencephalogram (EEG) from traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients who have had hemicraniectomies, remains challenging due to a confounding bandwidth overlap with surface electromyogram (EMG) artifacts related to facial and head movements. In part 1, we described an augmented independent component analysis (ICA) approach for removal of EMG artifacts from EEG, and referred to as EMG Reduction by Adding Sources of EMG (ERASE). Here, we tested ERASE on EEG recorded from six TBI patients with hemicraniectomies while they performed a thumb flexion task. ERASE removed a mean of 52 +/- 12% (mean +/- S.E.M) (maximum 73%) of EMG artifacts. In contrast, conventional ICA removed a mean of 27 +/- 19\% (mean +/- S.E.M) of EMG artifacts from EEG. In particular, high-gamma synchronization was significantly improved in the contralateral hand motor cortex area within the hemicraniectomy site after ERASE was applied. We computed fractal dimension (FD) of EEG high-gamma on each channel. We found relative FD of high-gamma over hemicraniectomy after applying ERASE were strongly correlated to the amplitude of finger flexion force. Results showed that significant correlation coefficients across the electrodes related to thumb flexion averaged 0.76, while the coefficients across the homologous electrodes in non-hemicraniectomy areas were nearly 0. Across all subjects, an average of 83% of electrodes significantly correlated with force was located in the hemicraniectomy areas after applying ERASE. After conventional ICA, only 19% of electrodes with significant correlations were located in the hemicraniectomy. These results indicated that the new approach isolated electrophysiological features during finger motor activation while selectively removing confounding EMG artifacts.

Abstract:Brain computer interface (BCI) based on non-invasive electroencephalography (EEG) signals has become a promising and alternative method for electromyography (EMG) signal in the rehabilitation process of amputees with high level of amputation. This is because their residual muscles cannot provide sufficient myoelectric signals to accurately recognize limb movement intentions. One of the major challenges of BCI based EEG methods is the inevitable artifacts contained in multi-channels EEG recordings that would affect accurate characterization and decoding of limb movement intents from brain signals. Previous studies have applied different methods based on regression, blind source separation (BSS) and filtering techniques, though with limited efficacy in fully isolating artifacts from the entire EEG signals. Also, some of the existing methods are targeted towards the removal of one or two particular types of artifacts. In this study, a linear algorithm based on generalized eigenvalue decomposition and multi-channel Wiener filter (GEVD-MWF) was proposed to simultaneously remove different type of artifacts inherent in EEG signals, recorded from four transhumeral amputee subjects. Experimental results showed that the proposed method outperformed the commonly used approach which achieved an improved average classification accuracy of 22.03% across all the classes of motor imagery (MI) tasks and subjects. For real-time applications, a modified channel selection algorithm-based on sequential forward floating selection (mSFFS) was adopted to remove redundant channels and an average accuracy of 96.87% was achieved with 10 electrode channels located at the pre-motor cortex, primary motor cortex and somatosensory cortex of the brain. The overall performance of the proposed method suggested that multiclass MI tasks can be reliably and accurately characterized using artifact-free EEG signals from a few number of channels. Thus, the proposed methods can be a potential control method for rehabilitation devices for individuals with high level amputation.
Removal of Muscle Artifact from EEG Data Based on Independent Vector Analysis

Abstract:ElectroEncephaloGram (EEG) data are often contaminated by various electrophysiological artifacts. Among all these artifacts, removing the ones related to muscle activity is particularly challenging. In past studies, Independent Component Analysis (ICA) and Canonical Correlation Analysis (CCA), as Blind Source Separation (BSS) methods, are widely used. In this work, a new method for muscle artifact removal in EEG data using Independent Vector Analysis (IVA) is proposed. IVA utilizes both the higher-order and second-order statistics, so that it makes full use of non-Gaussianity and weak autocorrelation of the muscle artifact and has the advantages of both ICA and CCA. The proposed method is examined on a number of simulated data sets and is shown to have better performance than ICA and CCA. The proposed IVA method is able to largely suppress muscle activity and meanwhile well preserve the underlying EEG activity.
Characterization and real-time removal of motion artifacts from EEG signals

Abstract:Objective. Accurate implementation of real-time non-invasive brain-machine/computer interfaces (BMI/BCI) requires handling physiological and nonphysiological artifacts associated with the measurement modalities. For example, scalp electroencephalographic (EEG) measurements are often considered prone to excessive motion artifacts and other types of artifacts that contaminate the EEG recordings. Although the magnitude of such artifacts heavily depends on the task and the setup, complete minimization or isolation of such artifacts is generally not possible. Approach. We present an adaptive de-noising framework with robustness properties, using a Volterra based non-linear mapping to characterize and handle the motion artifact contamination in EEG measurements. We asked healthy able-bodied subjects to walk on a treadmill at gait speeds of 1-to-4 mph, while we tracked the motion of select EEG electrodes with an infrared video-based motion tracking system. We also placed inertial measurement unit (IMU) sensors on the forehead and feet of the subjects for assessing the overall head movement and segmenting the gait. Main results. We discuss in detail the characteristics of the motion artifacts and propose a real-time compatible solution to filter them. We report the effective handling of both the fundamental frequency of contamination (synchronized to the walking speed) and its harmonics. Event-related spectral perturbation (ERSP) analysis for walking shows that the gait dependency of artifact contamination is also eliminated on all target frequencies. Significance. The real-time compatibility and generalizability of our adaptive filtering framework allows for the effective use of non-invasive BMI/BCI systems and greatly expands the implementation type and application domains to other types of problems where signal denoising is desirable. Combined with our previous efforts of filtering ocular artifacts, the presented technique allows for a comprehensive adaptive filtering framework to increase the EEG signal to noise ratio (SNR). We believe the implementation will benefit all non-invasive neural measurement modalities, including studies discussing neural correlates of movement and other internal states, not necessarily of BMI focus.

Abstract:As the demand for prosthetic limbs with reliable and multi-functional control increases, recent advances in myoelectric pattern recognition and implanted sensors have proven considerably advantageous. Additionally, sensory feedback from the prosthesis can be achieved via stimulation of the residual nerves, enabling closed-loop control over the prosthesis. However, this stimulation can cause interfering artifacts in the electromyographic (EMG) signals which deteriorate the reliability and function of the prosthesis. Here, we implement two real-time stimulation artifact removal algorithms, Template Subtraction (TS) and ε-Normalized Least Mean Squares (ε-NLMS), and investigate their performance in offline and real-time myoelectric pattern recognition in two transhumeral amputees implanted with nerve cuff and EMG electrodes. We show that both algorithms are capable of significantly improving signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and offline pattern recognition accuracy of artifact-corrupted EMG signals. Furthermore, both algorithms improved real-time decoding of motor intention during active neurostimulation. Although these outcomes are dependent on the user-specific sensor locations and neurostimulation settings, they nonetheless represent progress toward bi-directional neuromusculoskeletal prostheses capable of multifunction control and simultaneous sensory feedback.

Abstract:Abstract Object Electroencephalography (EEG) signals suffer from a low signal-to-noise ratio and are very susceptible to muscular, ambient noise, and other artifacts. Many artifact removal algorithms have been proposed to address this problem. However, the evaluation of these algorithms is conventionally too indirect (e.g., black-box comparisons of brain-computer interface performance before and after removal) because it is unclear which part of the signal represents raw EEG and which is noise. This project objectively benchmarks popular artifact removal algorithms and evaluates the fundamental Independent Component Analysis (ICA) approach thanks to a unique dataset where EEG is recorded simultaneously with other physiological signals-facial electromyography (EMG), accelerometers, and gyroscope-while ten subjects perform several repetitions of common artifact-inflicting tasks (blinking, speaking, etc.). Approach I have compared the correlation between EEG signals and the artifact-representing channels before and after applying an artifact removal algorithm across the different artifact-inflicting tasks. The extent to which an artifact removal method can reduce this correlation objectively quantifies its effectiveness for the different artifacts. In the same direction, I have determined to what extent ICA successfully detects artefactual components in EEG by comparing the corresponding correlations for independent components that are labelled as artifacts with those labeled as EEG. Main result The FORCe was found to be the most effective and generic artifact removal method, cleaning almost 40% of artifacts. ICA is shown to be able to isolate almost 70% of artefactual components. Significance This work alleviates the problem of unreliable evaluation of EEG artifact removal frameworks and provides the first reliable benchmark for the most popular algorithms in this literature.
