Abstract:Common mental disorders among young people are rising globally. Current university-based interventions are inadequate to address the need for evidence-based interventions. We investigated the effectiveness and implementation of Step-by-Step (SbS), a WHO digital intervention to address depression, among Chinese university students with depressive symptoms. In this paper, we report a type 1 hybrid effectiveness-implementation randomized controlled trial conducted between September 2021 and September 2022. The control condition was enhanced treatment as usual (ETAU, psychoeducation). The primary outcome was improvement in depression symptoms. Secondary outcomes were improvements in psychological well-being, anxiety symptoms, and self-identified psychosocial problems. Effectiveness of the intervention was evaluated using generalized linear mixed models. Implementation outcomes were evaluated by thematic analysis of participant interviews. A total of 371 participants were enrolled to two treatment conditions in a 1:1 ratio. SbS resulted in a greater reduction in depressive symptoms at posttreatment ( p = 0.004, Hedges' g = 0.35), but no significant difference between SbS and ETAU was observed at three-month follow-up ( p = 0.179, Hedges' g = 0.16). The treatment effect was larger among those who adhered to the treatment (Hedges' g s = 0.59 and 0.30). Subjective well-being also improved for SbS at both time points (Hedges' g s = 0.31 and 0.30). In addition, SbS resulted in more improvement in anxiety symptoms at posttreatment ( p = 0.029, Hedges' g = 0.26), but not at three-month follow-up ( p = 0.265, Hedges' g = 0.13). The qualitative results demonstrated that the intervention was well-implemented as a self-help mental health service, with minimal support from peer supporters. In conclusion, Step-by-Step, a digital intervention developed by WHO, was effective in reducing depressive symptoms in the short term and improving psychological well-being in a longer term. The sustained effect on depression needs further investigation. Improving uptake and engagement in the program is needed for its scale-up implementation as a university-based mental health service for Chinese young adults. Trial registration: ChiCTR2100050214.

Abstract:Background: Among Chinese college students, the burden of depression is considerably high, affecting up to 30 % of the population. Despite this burden, few Chinese students seek mental health treatment. In addition, depression is highly comorbid with other mental health disorders, such as anxiety. Scalable, transdiagnostic, evidence-based interventions are needed for this population. Objective: The study will evaluate the effectiveness of a World Health Organization transdiagnostic digital mental health intervention, Step-by-Step, to reduce depressive and anxiety symptoms and improve well-being compared with enhanced care as usual and its implementation in a Chinese university community. Methods: A type 1 effectiveness-implementation two-arm, parallel, randomized controlled trial will be conducted. The two conditions are 1) the 5-session Step-by-Step program with minimal guidance by trained peer-helpers and 2) psychoeducational information on depression and anxiety and referrals to local community services. A total of 334 Chinese university students will be randomized with a 1:1 ratio to either of the two groups. Depression, anxiety, wellbeing, and client defined problems will be assessed at pre-intervention, post-intervention, and 3-month follow-up. Endline qualitative interviews and focus group discussions will be conducted to explore SbS implementation among service users, university staff, and stakeholders. Data will be analysed based on the intent-to-treat principle. Discussion: Step-by-Step is an innovative approach to address common mental health problems in populations with sufficient digital literacy. It is a promising intervention that can be embedded to scale mental health services within a university setting. It is anticipated that after successful evaluation of the program and its implementation in the type 1 hybrid design RCT study, Step-by-Step can be scaled and maintained as a low-intensity treatment in universities, and potentially extended to other populations within the Chinese community. Acceptability and usability of a WeChat-based intervention for depression in China: A mixed-methods study

Abstract:Background: As research on the use of mobile technology to deliver mental health support grows, the research from China is still very limited. How to design an acceptable and usable mobile mental health service model suitable for China's social and cultural environment remains to be studied. Objective: To understand the acceptability and usability of a WeChat-based intervention among Chinese patients with depression, and to provide insights to promote future development of user-centered mobile mental health services design. Methods: The research team developed a multi-theoretical intervention that includes seven modules: recovery lessons, recovery journal, coaching sessions, mindfulness, personalized support, regular assessments and feedback collection. Forty-two patients diagnosed with depressive disorder were recruited, with a mixed sample of patients who were using an antidepressant medication (n = 29) and patients who were not using an antidepressant medication (n = 13). A single-arm mixed-methods study was conducted to understand engagement, satisfaction, usability and potential clinical effectiveness of the intervention. Results: There was a retention rate of 83.33% - 22 participants who used an antidepressant medication and 13 participants who did not use an antidepressant medication completed the final assessments. The median (upper quartile-lower quartile) of the completed 60 recovery journals and 7 coaching sessions was 56 (59-46) and 6 (7-4) times, respectively. Participants' satisfaction regarding their recovery progress, and on perceived helpfulness on different modules were high. The overall score of the user version of the Mobile Application Rating Scale was 4.23 (SD 0.44, range 1-5), indicating high acceptability and usability. Qualitative feedback identified three key themes: an efficient access to professional help, a personalized source of social support, and a facilitator of cognitive and behavioral change. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that a WeChat-based intervention for depression was acceptable, and has the potential to promote personal recovery. More studies are needed to understand the efficacy and implementation of this model in real world.

Abstract:SYNOPSIS. Axenic and monobacterial cultures were utilized to study the ultrastructure of the amoeboid and flagellate stages in the life-cycle of Naegleria gruberi. The cytoplasm of the amoeboid stage is poor in electron-dense components; a loosely organized endoplasmic reticulum is present. The absence of cytoplasmic inclusions in the ectoplasm is the only detectable difference between it and the endoplasm. The nucleus of Naegleria is typically vesicular. The mitochondria are of the type commonly found in protozoa. Food and contractile vacuoles are described. No Golgi apparatus has been found. The general ultrastructure of the flagellate resembles that of the amoeba. The kinetic apparatus consists of flagella and their associated kinetosomes, a “spur” made up of isodiametric fibrils (14 mμ in diameter) attaching to the base of the kinetosome, a cross-striated rhizoplast, and thin-walled fibrils (22 mμ in diameter) with a center of attachment in the kinetosomal complex. Neither centrioles nor kinetosomes have been found in the amoeba. Complex arrangements of endoplasmic reticulum have been seen in the cytoplasm of transforming individuals which may be points of origin of the kinetosomes and/or flagella. The nuclei in metamorphosing individuals frequently show unusual plasticity. Some speculations on possible orgins and affinities of Naegleria are included.
Effect of Cultural Adaptation of a Smartphone-Based Self-Help Programme on Its Acceptability and Efficacy: Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract:Background: Research on cultural adaptation of psychological interventions indicates that a higher level of adaptation is associated with a higher effect size of the intervention. However, direct comparisons of different levels of adaptations are scarce. Aims: This study used a smartphone-based self-help programme called Step-by-Step (Albanian: Hap-pas-Hapi) for the treatment of psychological distress among Albanian-speaking immigrants in Switzerland and Germany. Two levels of cultural adaptation (i.e., surface vs. deep structure adaptation) were compared. We hypothesised that the deep structure adaptation would enhance the acceptance and efficacy of the intervention. Method: We conducted a two-arm, single-blind randomised controlled trial. Inclusion criteria were good command of the Albanian language, age above 18, and elevated psychological distress (Kessler Psychological Distress Scale score above 15). Primary outcome measures were the total score of the Hopkins Symptom Checklist and the number of participants who completed at least three (out of five) sessions. Secondary outcomes were global functioning, well-being, post-traumatic stress, and self-defined problems. Results: Two-hundred-twenty-two participants were included, of which 18 (8%) completed the post-assessments. The number of participants who completed the third session was equal in both conditions, with N = 5 (5%) and N = 6 (6%) respectively. Discussion: Drop-out rates were high in both conditions, and no group difference was found regarding the acceptance of the intervention. The high drop-out rate stands in contrast with other trials testing Step-by-Step. Future research should examine cultural factors impacting recruitment strategies, as insights could help to reduce participant drop-out rates in clinical trials.

Abstract:People with mental illness are challenged by self-stigma, leading to a sense of behavioral futility and reduced goal seeking. Honest, Open, Proud (HOP) program is a peer service program that utilizes strategic disclosure to combat self-stigma. HOP was developed and predominantly examined in western culture, leaving unknown its effectiveness in East Asian countries. The current study reports adaptation and evaluation of HOP for Chinese people living with serious mental illness. Adaption underwent a community-based participatory research approach to assure cultural responsiveness. A pilot randomized controlled trial with 135 participants revealed that HOP diminished self-stigma in participants. Satisfaction and feasibility assessments indicated HOP was well received within the focal community. Results suggested HOP had benefits on disclosure self-efficacy and self-stigma for those participating in the program. Future research should further examine cultural mediators of peer support and disclosure on stigma and empowerment.

Abstract:Background To address the lack of mental health practitioners in developing countries, the current study explored the feasibility of a newly developed self-guided digital intervention program TEA (training for emotional adaptation) in alleviating depressive and anxiety symptoms, as one of a few studies which adapted from theoretical models with effective intervention techniques. Methods The first part of this study involved 11 professional mental health practitioners giving feedback on the feasibility of the TEA; while the second part involved a mixed-method single-arm study with 32 participants recruited online, who went through the seven intervention sessions within 14 days. The questionnaires were collected before, after, 14 days after, and 30 days after intervention. Additionally, 10 participants were invited to semi-structured interviews regarding their suggestions. Results Practitioners thought that the TEA showed high professionalism (8.91/10) and is suitable for treating emotional symptoms (8.09/10). The generalized estimating equation model showed that the TEA significantly reduced participants' depressive and anxiety symptoms, while the effects of the intervention remained 30 days post intervention (Cohen's d > 1). Thematic analysis revealed three main themes about future improvement, including content improvement, interaction improvement, and bug-fixing. Conclusions To address the current needs for digital mental health intervention programs to account for the insufficient availability of mental health services in China, the current study provides preliminary evidence of the effectiveness of TEA, with the potential to address the urgent need for remote mental health services. Abstract:Background The research tools for the assessment of adolescent mental health are mostly developed for high-income settings, and are used elsewhere without linguistic or cultural modification. Youth involvement in the development of research aimed at young people is recommended by WHO, but few studies have involved young people in the design of mental health tools. In this study we aimed to develop a self-completion questionnaire to assess adolescent mental health based on perceptions of Chinese adolescents. Methods We did a literature search to initially identify 11 scales suitable for assessing adolescent mental health and influencing factors and help-seeking behaviour. Students from rural and urban areas, and from public and private schools in Zhejiang, Anhui, Henan, and Jiangsu provinces, China, were invited to work with researchers to develop a questionnaire. Inclusion criteria were students aged 13–20 years who were willing to be involved in the study. Students initially independently completed the draft questionnaire, and provided detailed feedback in one-to-one interviews with researchers and in focus group sessions. Researchers recorded student inputs. Analysis involved inductive summarisation and factor extraction. Ethical approval was obtained from the Medical Ethics Committee of Zhejiang University. We obtained verbal consent from the volunteers and from the parents of those younger than 18 years. Findings From Feb 9, 2019, to May 16, 2019, 46 student volunteers (30 male and 16 female; mean age 16 years, SD 13–20) were recruited into our study. We finalised a self-completion questionnaire with 99 items including three psychological scales. With youth involvement, we found that standard Chinese translations of widely-used scales were not understandable. Students felt that some items would not be answered honestly, and so they were changed or removed. The students were very eager to include sensitive topics, such as suicide and self-harm, and some suggested more attention should be paid to this. At their request, questions about academic pressure were expanded, with questions on social media added, including specific questions on posting modified pictures and sharing of personal problems online. Interpretation Adolescent participation in questionnaire design improves the structure and content of tools assessing mental health, making such research tools more acceptable and understandable. Development and usability evaluation of a culturally adapted stroke prevention educational programme on WeChat apps

Abstract:Background: The persistently high incidence of stroke in many nations is suggestive of an area for further improvement on existing strategies of primary stroke prevention. Although the era of digitalisation has led to the increasing use of mobile applications (apps) in healthcare, more studies are needed to determine the efficacy of apps in producing the desired health outcomes across different nations and cultures. Objective: To describe the development and evaluate the usability of a mobile app in delivering a culturally adapted stroke prevention educational programme for middle-aged adults in the Republic of China. Methods: The educational programme was developed in three phases. In Phase 1, the process involved analysing requirements and designing structured modules. Phase 2 concentrated on expert consultation and technical development to deliver the educational programme. Phase 3 included a usability trial and refinement of the educational program based on trial results. Results: Educational content was derived from the Chinese Guidelines for the Prevention and Treatment of Stroke and the Dietary Guidelines for Residents. The WeChat platform was used to deliver the educational programme. Participants expressed satisfaction with the content, interface, and functions of the apps, indicating that the apps have good usability. Conclusions: The development process of the Educational Programme was designed to maximise the culturally appropriate, and impact of lifestyle changes and stroke prevention. An app-based educational programme that has demonstrated good usability is a vital factor prior to deploying it in an intervention to evaluate its effects on health outcomes.

Both SD(n, 2) and C(n, 2) become strictly weaker when n grows. For varieties V the satisfaction of SD(n, 2) in {Con(A) : A ∈ V} is characterized by a Mal’cev condition. Using this Mal’cev condition it is shown that C(n, 2) |=con SD(n, 2), which means that, for every variety V , whenever C(n, 2) holds in {Con(A) : A ∈ V} then so does SD(n, 2). In particular, C(2, 2) |=con SD(2, 2), which is a stronger statement than SD∨ |=con SD∧, the only previously known |=con result between lattice Horn sentences “not below congruence modularity”. Some other |=con statements are also presented.
Step-by-Step, an E-Mental Health Intervention for Depression: A Mixed Methods Pilot Study From Lebanon

Abstract:Background: E-mental health is an established mode of delivering treatment for common mental disorders in many high income countries. However, evidence of its effectiveness in lower income countries is lacking. This mixed methods study presents lessons learned and preliminary data on the feasibility of a minimally guided e-mental health intervention in Lebanon. The aim was to pilot test Step-by-Step, a WHO guided e-mental health intervention, and research methods prior to future, controlled testing.Methods: Participants were recruited using social media and advertisements in primary care clinics. Participants completed baseline and post-intervention questionnaires on depression symptoms (primary outcome, PHQ-8), anxiety symptoms, well-being, disability and self-perceived problem severity, and a client satisfaction questionnaire. In addition, seven completers, four drop-outs, 11 study staff, and four clinic managers were interviewed with responses thematically analyzed. Website analytics were used to understand participant behavior when using the website.Results: A total of 129 participants signed up via the Step-by-Step website. Seventy-four participants started session 1 after completing pre-test questionnaires and 26 completed both baseline and post-intervention data. Among those who completed post-assessments, depression symptoms improved (PHQ-8 scores (t=5.62, p < 0.001 two-tailed, df = 25). Wilcoxon signed ranks tests showed a significant difference between baseline and post-Step-by-Step scores on all secondary outcome measures. Client satisfaction data was positive. Interview responses suggested that the intervention could be made more appropriate for younger, single people, more motivating, and easier to use. Those who utilized the support element of the intervention were happy with their relationship with the non-specialist support person (e-helper), though some participants would have preferred specialist support. E-helpers would have liked more training on complex cases. Website analytics showed that many users dropped out before intervention start, and that some re-entered screening data having been excluded from the study.Conclusion: Step-by-Step skills and techniques, model of service integration, and its non-specialist support element are acceptable. Though the sample was small and non-controlled and drop-out was high, results suggest that it may be effective in reducing depression and anxiety symptoms and increasing well-being. Lessons learned will inform content revision, the development of an app version of Step-by-Step, and the research methodology of upcoming effectiveness studies.

Abstract:Background: Racial/ethnic minority and immigrant caregivers of persons with dementia experience high rates of psychosocial stress and adverse health outcomes. Few culturally tailored mobile health (mHealth) programs were designed for these vulnerable populations. Objective: This study reports the development of a culturally tailored mHealth program called Wellness Enhancement for Caregivers (WECARE) to improve caregiving skills, reduce distress, and improve the psychosocial well-being of Chinese American family caregivers of persons with dementia. Methods: Community-based user-centered design principles were applied in the program development. First, the structure and curriculum of the WECARE program were crafted based on existing evidence-based interventions for caregivers with input from 4 experts. Second, through working closely with 8 stakeholders, we culturally adapted evidence-based programs into multimedia program components. Lastly, 5 target users tested the initial WECARE program; their experience and feedback were used to further refine the program. Results: The resulting WECARE is a 7-week mHealth program delivered via WeChat, a social media app highly popular in Chinese Americans. By subscribing to the official WECARE account, users can receive 6 interactive multimedia articles pushed to their WeChat accounts each week for 7 weeks. The 7 major themes include (1) facts of dementia and caregiving; (2) the enhancement of caregiving skills; (3) effective communication with health care providers, care partners, and family members; (4) problem-solving skills for caregiving stress management; (5) stress reduction and depression prevention; (6) the practice of self-care and health behaviors; and (7) social support and available resources. Users also have the option of joining group chats for peer support. The WECARE program also includes a back-end database that manages intervention delivery and tracks user engagement. Conclusions: The WECARE program represents one of the first culturally tailored social media-based interventions for Chinese American caregivers of persons with dementia. It demonstrates the use of community-based user-centered design principles in developing an mHealth intervention program in underserved communities. We call for more cultural adaptation and development of mHealth interventions for immigrant and racial/ethnic minority caregivers of persons with dementia.
Process Model of Emotion Regulation-Based Digital Intervention for Emotional Problems: A mixed methods feasibility study

Abstract:The current study explored the feasibility of a newly developed self-guided digital intervention program TEA (Training for Emotional Adaptation) in alleviating depressive and anxiety symptoms, corresponding to the urgent call for remote mental health service. It is one of a few studies which adapted from theoretical models with effective intervention techniques. The first part involved 11 professional mental health practitioners giving feedback on the feasibility; while the second part involved a single-arm study with 32 participants recruited online, who went through the seven intervention sessions. The questionnaires were collected before, after, 14-days after and 30-days after the intervention. Moreover, 10 participants were invited to semi-structured interviews. Practitioners thought the TEA showed high professionalism (8.91/10) and is suitable for treating emotional symptoms (8.09/10). The Generalized estimating equation (GEE) model showed that the TEA significantly reduced their psychological symptoms, while the effects of the intervention were retained for 30-day post intervention (Cohens d >1). Thematic analysis revealed three main themes about future improvement, including content improvement, interaction improvement and bug-fixing. Taken together, current study supported the effectiveness of TEA, with the potential to address the urgent need for remote mental health service. Future randomized controlled trials to confirm the effectiveness are required.
Subtle Asian Glow: A Digital Substance Use Prevention Platform for Asian Populations

Abstract:Background Despite the influx of digital mental health interventions addressing substance use among young people, there is a need for leveraging cultural sensitivity in the context of substance use within the Asian college student populations, particularly with MDMA, vaping, and alcohol use. While the stigma among Asian populations is increasingly high in regards to substance use, it makes it more challenging if the interventions are not appropriate in respect to the cultural and familial norms that Asian college students experience on a daily basis. Furthermore, public health research and interventions often dismisses the needs and substance use problems that exist among Asian populations. Purpose To propose a digitally based intervention for promoting safe substance use practices and incorporates social support, social media influence, accessibility, and de-stigmatization through a culturally sensitive lens for Asian college students. Methods We used the Theory of Planned Behavior to leverage the attitudes towards the behavior, perceived behavioral control, and subjective norms for substance use behavior change, and this will be executed through a peer mentorship program, an online community discussion board, a social media campaign, and a curated list of resources. Discussion This proposed intervention hopes to encourage existing substance use interventions to integrate cultural sensitivity into their material and dismantle the xenophobic narratives of the model minority myth. It is critical for existing interventions to acknowledge how to become a more inclusive and accessible platform for Asian populations, and evaluate these intervention strategies through the common risk factors that are specific to this population.

Abstract:Background: Evidence-based strategies for treating mental health conditions need to be scaled up to address the mental health treatment gap in low- and middle-income countries. Most medical and psychological interventions for the treatment of mental health conditions have been developed and evaluated in high-income countries. However, the imperative of scaling up such interventions potentially ignores local realities, and may also discredit or replace local frameworks for responding to distress. Aims: This article aims to develop a framework for the cultural adaptation of social interventions which are developed within, and draw upon, local contexts, to ensure they are acceptable, feasible and effective. Method: A case study approach is used to discuss the feasibility of developing and adapting psychosocial interventions which are embedded in local knowledge, values and practices. Results: The first case study introduces yoga as an alternative and/or complementary, and culturally relevant, approach for people experiencing mental health conditions in India. The second case study is a cross-cultural adaptation of a psychosocial intervention from the United Kingdom to fit the local idioms of distress and service context in Sierra Leone, as the country battled with the Ebola outbreak. We use these case studies to develop a Cultural Adaptation Framework, which recognises that people and their mental health are products of their culture and society, to inform the future development, adaptation and evaluation of sociocultural interventions for people experiencing mental health conditions in low- and middle-income countries. Conclusion: The Cultural Adaptation Framework can be used to ensure interventions are culturally relevant and responsive to local conditions prior to evaluating in experimental studies.

Abstract:Background: There is an urgent need for scalable psychological treatments to address adolescent depression in low-resource settings. Digital mental health interventions have many potential advantages, but few have been specifically designed for or rigorously evaluated with adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa. Objective: This study had 2 main objectives. The first was to describe the user-centered development of a smartphone app that delivers behavioral activation (BA) to treat depression among adolescents in rural South Africa and Uganda. The second was to summarize the findings from multicycle usability testing. Methods: An iterative user-centered agile design approach was used to co-design the app to ensure that it was engaging, culturally relevant, and usable for the target populations. An array of qualitative methods, including focus group discussions, in-depth individual interviews, participatory workshops, usability testing, and extensive expert consultation, was used to iteratively refine the app throughout each phase of development. Results: A total of 160 adolescents from rural South Africa and Uganda were involved in the development process. The app was built to be consistent with the principles of BA and supported by brief weekly phone calls from peer mentors who would help users overcome barriers to engagement. Drawing on the findings of the formative work, we applied a narrative game format to develop the Kuamsha app. This approach taught the principles of BA using storytelling techniques and game design elements. The stories were developed collaboratively with adolescents from the study sites and included decision points that allowed users to shape the narrative, character personalization, in-app points, and notifications. Each story consists of 6 modules ("episodes") played in sequential order, and each covers different BA skills. Between modules, users were encouraged to work on weekly activities and report on their progress and mood as they completed these activities. The results of the multicycle usability testing showed that the Kuamsha app was acceptable in terms of usability and engagement. Conclusions: The Kuamsha app uniquely delivered BA for adolescent depression via an interactive narrative game format tailored to the South African and Ugandan contexts. Further studies are currently underway to examine the intervention's feasibility, acceptability, and efficacy in reducing depressive symptoms.

Abstract:Background Chinese students are extremely vulnerable to developing mental illness. The stigma associated with mental illness presents a barrier to seeking help for their mental health. Objective The Linking Hearts—Linking Youth and ‘Xin’ (hearts) project is an implementation science project that seeks to reduce mental illness stigma and promote the mental health of university students in Jinan, China. The Linking Hearts project consists of 3 components. In this paper, we outline the protocol for the first component, that is, the contextual assessment and analysis of the mental health needs of university students as the first step to inform the adaptation of an evidence-based intervention to be implemented in Jinan, China. Methods Six local universities will participate in the Linking Hearts project. A total of 100 students from each university (n=600) will engage in the contextual assessment through self-report surveys on depression, anxiety, stress, mental health knowledge, and mental health stigma. Quantitative data will be analyzed using several descriptive and inferential analyses via SPSS. A small number of participants (144 students and 144 service providers) will also be engaged in focus groups to assess the socio-environmental contexts of university students’ health and availability of mental health resources. Qualitative data will be transcribed verbatim and NVivo will be used for data management. Social network analysis will also be performed using EgoNet. Results Linking Hearts was funded in January 2018 for 5 years. The protocol of Linking Hearts and its 3 components was approved by the research ethics boards of all participating institutions in China in November 2018. Canadian institutions that gave approval were Ryerson University (REB2018-455) in January 2019, University of Alberta (Pro00089364), York University (e2019-162) in May 2019, and University of Toronto (RIS37724) in August 2019. Data collection took place upon ethics approval and was completed in January 2020. A total of 600 students were surveyed. An additional 147 students and 138 service providers took part in focus groups. Data analysis is ongoing. Results will be published in 2021. Conclusions Findings from this contextual assessment and analysis will generate new knowledge on university students’ mental health status, mental health knowledge, and resources available for them. These findings will be used to adapt and refine the Acceptance and Commitment to Empowerment-Linking Youth N’ Xin intervention model. The results of this contextual assessment will be used to inform the adaptation and refinement of the mental health intervention to promote the mental health of Chinese university students in Jinan. Abstract:Depression is a global public health problem, with broad social, economic and personal consequences. However, there exists incomplete understanding of the psychological distress of Chinese older adults, which is often exacerbated by the cultural and linguistic barriers at the individual, family and community levels. This paper reviews the epidemiology of depression among Chinese older adults and also explores the barriers to treatment. Since depression in the Chinese aging population is a multifaceted issue, a culturally appropriate and interdisciplinary approach to improve the quality of life and quality of care for the Chinese older adults is critical. We propose that leveraging cultural humility models in conjunction with existing cultural competency training could be a novel strategy to enhance training of healthcare professionals dealing with depression in Chinese aging populations. Future research is needed to explore the causal mechanism and consequences associated with depression in representative Chinese aging populations.
