Abstract:Protected areas are an essential policy tool for biodiversity conservation in China as elsewhere, yet the impact of protected area policies on the livelihood of local households in China remains unknown. We contend that the protected area policy achieves the two goals of ecological conservation and livelihood improvement simultaneously. In this study, we empirically investigated the influence of the protected area policy on local households’ risk perception, forest investment, and forest revenue. We analyzed a sample consisting of households located inside or adjacent to two protected areas, namely, Wuyishan National Park and Longqishan Nature Reserve, both in Fujian Province. A total of 211 valid questionnaires were collected in 2021, and the data were analyzed using structural equation modeling. The results indicate that the establishment of protected areas has a positive impact on forest revenues, mediated by risk perception and forest investment, while the average levels of perceived damage increased and perceived security decreased due to the protected area policy. Our study has implications for policymakers seeking to improve biodiversity and household livelihood around protected areas.

Abstract:Traffic delay is causing loss of valuable time to the general commuter and restricts the road network from functioning in an orderly manner. Researchers have concluded that millions of dollars worth of business is lost due to delay caused by road congestion, and consequently hindrance or abolishment of important business undertakings. In this research, we present a hybrid system that calculates link delay between road intersections using fuzzy logic. The aim of the system is to compute a near optimum path using the soft computing techniques such as breadth first search (BFS), depth first search (DFS) and genetic algorithms (GA). The outcomes of this study indicate that the hybrid system solves the traffic routing problem much more efficiently than the existing stand-alone techniques. The results of this research can be integrated with a traffic advisory system, which can alert a user for optimum route selection or inform civil authorities about possible traffic bottlenecks.

Abstract:Conservation easements (CE), as an emerging conservation strategy in China, have gained successful collective participation within the Qianjiangyuan National Park with all its collectively-owned forestlands under easements. This study uses an analytical framework developed from the social-ecological systems (SES) framework to explore systemic inter-dependencies among social, economic, political, and natural processes that contextualize the agreements and patterns of interaction where collective participation is achieved. The results indicate that broader-scale variables under socio-ecological contexts, by affecting the resource system, government system, actor system variables, and their interactions, play a more important role in CE participation than sole individual variables. At the regional scale, changing socio-political factors have influenced rural communities' resource utilization and reduced economic dependency on logging activities, facilitating CE adoption. Within the focal action situation, collective participation was achieved under the rural governance system in which actors interact to form community-level consensus through rural self-governance and consultation, influenced by the mobilizing power of the authority. The case study in China demonstrates the feasibility of using CE as a forest co-management strategy in densely populated protected areas under a common-property regime and the necessity of considering both regional-scale factors and local dynamics in CE design and implementation.

Abstract:It is internationally recognized that conservation policies should respect indigenous cultures and consider the livelihoods of people affected by conservation restrictions. Countering this are concerns that human occupation and use of natural reserves is incompatible with conservation aims. But in China today the continued use and management of natural areas by local communities is likely to deliver better conservation outcomes than the current drive to establish public protected areas. The effectiveness of many protected areas in China is compromised by institutional conflicts, lack of ongoing financial and technical support, confusion between the objectives of generating revenue and conservation, dubious scientific definitions, lack of community trust in policies, and obscure user rights and land tenures. Southwestern China-one of the most biologically and ethnologically diverse areas on Earth-is a good illustration of a place where culture and biological diversity are closely linked. The indigenous people in this area have shown that local livelihood practices can be advantageous for the long-term maintenance of conservation goals. Rather than creating new protected areas, we argue that China is better advised to support ongoing sustainable use of natural areas by the people who have lived and nurtured these environments for generations.

Abstract:Abstract Balancing biodiversity conservation and the socioeconomic well-being of ethnic minority communities presents a significant challenge in protected areas. Ecological compensation (EC) is a crucial policy instrument for improving the livelihood of affected residents, but its application in ethnic minority-dominant regions is complicated by cultural differences and fragile economic foundations. This study evaluates the impact of an innovative hybrid EC mechanism, integrating cash payment, employment support, and education incentive, on the livelihood resilience of ethnic minority groups and identifies the most cost-effective mechanism. Using field data from rural households in Potatso National Park, analyzed through hierarchical multiple regression and scenario simulations within the Sustainable Livelihood Framework, the study finds that: (i) Hybrid EC mechanisms significantly improve overall livelihoods, with households receiving employment support and education incentive showing 0.074 and 0.052 higher average livelihood score, respectively (on a 0-1 scale); (ii) Different EC types have varied effects across households; and (iii) Hybrid EC mechanisms increase social benefits by 6.97% to 37.65%, with only a 1.30% to 20.15% cost increase compared to baseline scenario. The findings highlight the need for diversified and optimized EC policies to maximize cost-effectiveness and improve livelihood resilience in protected areas.
Dominant Species Abundance, Vertical Structure and Plant Diversity Response to Nature Forest Protection in Northeastern China: Conservation Effects and Implications

Abstract:The conservation of species diversity and improvement of forest structure are essential roles of the Natural Reserve Policy and the Natural Forest Protection Program (NFPP) in China. However, the long-term effects of NFPP are still not well-defined, and a natural reserve (Liangshui) and surrounding region were surveyed as a proxy of NFPP for approaching the protection effects. Our results showed that long-term conservation significantly altered the dominant species in the herb layer (80% of species), followed by shrub (58%) and tree layers (50%); there was a 1.6-8.0-fold increase in abundance in Corylus shrubs, Acer trees and Carex grass, but a 1.3–10.0-fold abundance decrease in larch trees, Athyrium herbs and Lonicera shrubs. In contrast, tree species diversity and distribution evenness increased by 31% and 23.4% in the reserve, respectively. Forest protection in the reserve also led to the forest structural alteration with the observation of larger-sized trees and shorter herbs, but relatively sparse forests (smaller tree density). Structural equation modeling manifested that the reserve directly altered forest structure, at a coefficient of 0.854, nearly two-fold higher than its impact on diversity (0.459) and dominant species (−0.445). The most affected parameters were plant size (trees and herbs) and tree density related to forest structure, tree diversity, herb richness and evenness for diversity traits, and Oxalidaceae and Rosaceae for dominant species. This study provides basic data that can be used to evaluate the impact of the nature reserve in NE China, and these findings can be used to guide the implementation of NFPP in the long-term in the future.

Ultrasonographic features of carotid plaque and the risk of subsequent neurologic deficits.

Abstract:In a prospective study, 214 consecutive patients considered not to be candidates for surgical intervention were evaluated by means of duplex scanning. Of the patients, 135 had no symptoms and 79 had a history of previous neurologic symptoms. In 139 sides duplex scanning demonstrated nonhemodynamic stenosis (lumen diameter reduction, less than 50%) and in 99 sides, hemodynamic stenosis (lumen diameter reduction, 50% or greater). Of the 238 carotid artery plaques examined, 167 were homogenous and 71 were heterogenous. During a mean follow-up of 34 months, 27 new focal neurologic deficits occurred. Patients with previous symptoms had a higher incidence of new deficits (18/79 vs 9/135) (p less than 0.01). The severity of the stenosis and the presence of a heterogenous plaque were statistically correlated with the occurrence of new deficits (p less than 0.001). Multivariate analysis showed that the ultrasonographic pattern and the severity of the stenosis were independent variables. We conclude that a heterogenous plaque should be considered an unstable plaque with the possibility of causing cerebral ischemia.

Abstract:The landscape perception and identity of residents in traditional villages significantly influence their conservation behaviors and are affected by multiple factors. However, empirical studies on how residents' perceptions of village landscapes influence their willingness to engage in conservation activities, particularly within the context of China, remain limited. This study, therefore, focuses on residents in the southeastern coastal region of China and, based on the Attitude-Behavior Theory framework, constructs a "Perceived Value – Place Identity–Behavioral Intention" model. Utilizing structural equation modeling, the study explores the mediating role and related characteristics of place identity between the perceived value of traditional village landscapes and residents' behavioral intentions. The findings reveal that both landscape perceived value and place identity significantly impact residents' behavioral intentions, with place identity mediating the effect of various dimensions of perceived value on residents' behavioral intentions. The comprehensive path coefficient rankings are as follows: architectural landscape perception, layout landscape perception, cultural landscape perception, and environmental landscape perception. Additionally, residents' demographic characteristics partially influence their attitude and behavior. This study validates the behavioral characteristics of residents in the conservation of traditional villages and highlights the critical role of the perception-identity link in promoting conservation behavior. These findings not only contribute to the knowledge system of residents' attitudes and behaviors in traditional village conservation but also have significant implications for the targeted preservation and enhancement of village landscape elements.

Abstract:Human activities are contributing to a global decline in biodiversity and ecosystem services. While national parks, rooted in sustainable development principles, aim to counteract this trend and have been successful in developed nations, their direct applicability to developing countries is debatable. In light of the challenges associated with coordinating environmental, social, economic, and cultural objectives, we have formulated a theoretical framework centered on the concept of "risk-value" for managing national park zoning in developing nations. This framework is designed to promote co-prosperity by simultaneously addressing biodiversity conservation, equity, and human well-being concerns. Our framework, when applied to China's Baishanzu National Park, entailed subdividing the park into four distinct zones, each managed by specific and tailored policies. Our research provides insights into the theoretical underpinnings of implementing the national park concept in developing countries and showcases effective strategies for enhancing ecological conservation in these regions.

Abstract:Introduction: Environmental protection is an essential issue for sustainable development, and its execution power mainly comes from individual environmental protection behavior. This study investigates the resident environmental protection behaviors and influencing factors in the ecologically fragile areas of western China based on a total of 1062 households by adopting the participatory assessment method. Then, this study used the structural equation model to empirically analyze the impact of social capital, environmental risk perception, and environmental awareness on residents' environmental protection behavior.Outcomes: The results showed that environmental awareness is the basis for practicing environmental protection behavior, consistent with the existing research; social capital has a significant impact on residents' environmental protection behavior, with an impact coefficient of 0.347. Hence, environmental risk perception has an indirect influence on environmental protection behavior through environmental awareness. Besides, compared with urban residents, rural residents' environmental awareness and social capital have a stronger role in environmental protection behavior.Conclusions: The study clarified the influence path of residents' environmental protection behavior, thus effectively providing a decision-making basis for the government to guide residents in the environmental governance system.

Abstract:Large numbers of people living in and around protected areas are highly dependent on the natural resources. However, simply excluding them from the area management has always inevitably resulted in conflicts. We conducted a case study of the Protected Area of Jinyun Mountain (PJM) in China to evaluate social context variables, environmental attitudes, and perceptions regarding protected area-community conflicts. Data were collected through questionnaire surveys administered to four stakeholder groups (i.e. local farmers, government staff, business persons, and tourists). A total of 112 questionnaires were completed in December 2008, after the Sichuan Earthquake. The questionnaire consisted of three parts, social context (gender, race, age, income, and education level), protected area-community conflicts, and environmental attitudes. The New Ecological Paradigm (NEP) scores, which were employed to evaluate environmental attitudes, differed significantly among the stakeholder groups (P<0.01). Specifically, government staff reported the highest and business persons did the lowest. Among the five items evaluated, anti-exemptionalism received the lowest score, while nature's balance did the highest. Evaluation of the protected area-community relationship indicated that harmony and conflict both exist in the PJM, but have different forms among different stakeholders, and seem to be opposite between government staff and local farmers. Among the indexes, tourism primarily contributed to the harmonious aspect, while collection of NTFPs did to the conflicting one. Conflict scores were positively related to age and negatively related to education level. Respondents with higher NEP scores were more partial to the park management. Besides, the respondents with higher annual incomes tended to support the policy of harmonizing the relationship and lessening the harm of local communities to the area. To promote proenvironmental attitudes and alleviate the protected area-community conflicts, we recommend improving environmental education, establishing community co-management, and launching substitute sources of cash for traditional cultivation.

Abstract:<p>Eco-tourism is rapidly developing in giant panda nature reserves in China, and is considered a popular tool for biodiversity conservation and the welfare of local communities. However, there is lack of empirical evidence on whether eco-tourism promotes the conservation behavior of local communities members, who live around nature reserves. To this end, this study constructed a framework to measure households' forest conservation activities, and conducted a questionnaire survey in 12 giant panda nature reserves in Sichuan Province, China. A total of 686 valid samples were obtained. A logit model was used to confirm whether income from community-based ecotourism (CBET) could enhance households' conservation behavior. The results show that households prefer three types of conservation practices, and CBET could significantly improve the income of households engaged in it. Income from CBET has motivated local households to participate in conservation activities; however, but the effects are different. In all three conservation activities, income from CBET has shown significant effects on promoting forest maintenance and protection activities, but not on reforestation ones. The results of this research could help us better understand the relationship between CBET and local households' conservation behavior. It also provides information for policymakers seeking for the best way to balance conservation and development.</p>

Abstract:Following the collective forest tenure reforms in China, many households pursued entrepreneurial activities creating substantial pressure on the environment. This study examines data collected from 462 informants in 10 provinces in Southern China to understand how changes in attitudes toward ecological protection behavior occur. The internal mechanisms of ecological attitudes were explored using structural equation modeling to obtain a function path. Ecological emotion has a direct effect on ecological protection behavior by acting as an intermediary between ecological knowledge and ecological protection. Perceived ecological severity mediates between ecological knowledge and emotion influencing entrepreneurial farmers’ ecological protection behavior. The perception of individual efficacy is mediated by perceptions of ecological severity and ecological emotion, eventually affecting ecological protection behavior. A model of cognition–emotion–practice is proposed based on the findings.

Abstract:As a member of the national park, the environmentally responsible behavior of the entrance community residents has an important impact on the ecological protection of the national park. However, there are still insufficient studies on the mechanism of influence of community residents’ place attachment on environmentally responsible behavior and the role of environmental commitment. Based on the theory of interdependence, this study explored the impact of residents’ place attachment in a national park gateway community on environmentally responsible behavior, and examined the mediating role of environmental commitment. We conducted empirical research on Shuiman gateway community of the Hainan Tropical Rainforest China National Park. Through structural equation modeling, the survey of 375 residents yielded the following conclusions: (1) place dependence indirectly affect environmentally responsible behavior via the mediating effect of place identity; (2) both place dependence and place identity have a positive and significant impact on environmental commitment; (3) environmental commitment has a positive and significant impact on environmentally responsible behavior; (4) the mediating effect of environmental commitment on the impact of place dependence on environmentally responsible behavior is significant and “place identity–environmental commitment” also has a significant mediating effect. Finally, three managerial insights were discussed. This study enriches the connotation and application scope of interdependence theory, explains the different roles of place dependence, place identity, and environmental commitment in the study of environmentally responsible behavior, and provides some inspiration for future research and practice of environmentally responsible behavior. It is helpful for community residents to participate in the ecological environment governance of national parks and achieve sustainable development.

Abstract:Community-based conservation has been proven as an effective approach for biodiversity conservation,and is an important part for National Parks in China.As the first pilot of the new national park system in China,the Three-River-Source National Park initiated a new arrangement to employ 16,621 villagers from each household living in the national park to serve as conservation guards.Local Tibetan herders take the main responsibility of Sanjiangyuan conservation and in return receive payments from the national park.Such an arrangement coincides with local people's willingness of participating in conservation,influenced by traditional Tibetan Buddhist culture.However,in addition to conservation,poverty alleviation is set as a priority target especially when guards were selected,which to certain extent compromised the effectiveness of conservation.While understanding the needs of poverty alleviation,we analyzed institutional rationales of such a selection,and made policy suggestions that conservation targets should become the first priority and more resources and space should be allocated to local governments and communities for self-governance on conservation decisions and actions.NGOs may also contribute to assist these practices.
Measuring the conservation attitudes of local farmers towards conservation easements in the Qianjiangyuan National Park

Abstract:Perceptions and attitudes provide an important means of assessing the performance of conservation practices so that policies can be improved and developed for better biodiversity protection and the wellbeing of people subject to protected area management. Conservation easements (CEs) was introduced in the Chinese context to resolve the conflict between rural land use and area-based conservation measures. In this study, conservation attitude indices were developed and validated to measure attitude towards conservation easements that were placed in the collectively-owned forestland and its implementation institutional background, the Qianjiangyuan National Park pilot (QNP) in Zhejiang Province of China. Conservation easement Attitude Index (CEAI) and QNP Attitude Index (NPAI) were calculated based on a random sample of 241 respondents in three towns concerning their perceptions of specific statements. Demographic characteristics and livelihood capital factors were introduced to predict the attitudes to improve CE and QNP management in a more socially acceptable manner. Results revealed that basic infrastructure, land status, education and information were the main determinants of CEAI and QNP with differences in the three towns. There was a dichotomy of perceptions of the ecological meaning (public welfare) and the economic meaning (local livelihoods) and a mismatch of perceptions of the content and the procedure of the CE agreement. The perceptions and attitude index can assist conservation practitioners and decision-makers to improve CE to a more efficient conservation tool, by making it more context-specific for different communities considering the historical process of protected area development, to demonstrate the linkage between national park management and local livelihood, and promote proactive involvement of the village committee.

Abstract:This study aims to assess the relationship between community development and environmental protection using the variables of perception of livelihood capitals changes and pro-environmental behaviours based on social exchange theory. Residents' empirical data were collected at the Nanling National Nature Reserve, which is located in south China. Convenience sampling method was used in the survey, and 314 valid samples were collected in total. The results suggest that the perception of livelihood capitals changes has a significant impact on residents' pro-environmental behaviours, and six types of livelihood capitals have variable effects on specific pro-environmental behaviours among distinct livelihood strategy groups. Under a tourism participation strategy, the overall effect of the perception of livelihood capitals changes on pro-environmental behaviours is the lowest among the three livelihood strategy groups. In addition, the levels of residents' perception of livelihood capitals changes and pro-environmental behaviours under a tourism participation strategy are higher than those under a farming strategy, and those under a tourism participation strategy are lower than those under other strategies. This study develops a methodological approach to understand the relationship between development and conservation and advances social exchange theory. Several practical implications are discussed, and recommendations for future research are presented.

[Optimization of T7-based RNA amplification system for cDNA microarray].

Abstract:cDNA microarrays are powerful parallel tools for gene expression profiling analysis, which help us to understand the molecular mechanism of diseases and to identify potential targets for therapeutic intervention. However, their broader application are hampered by the large amount of RNA required: up to 200 microg of total RNA or 5 microg of mRNA for one chip, making analysis of small samples difficult. In this work, combined with a template switching effect, the T7 RNA linear amplification procedure was optimized, providing multiple copies of anti-sense RNA with reduced sample inputs: no more than 3 microg total RNA for one chip. Using the same RNA sample in all cases, the anti-sense RNA labeling method was compared with standard total RNA and mRNA methods by two sets of self-comparison experiments. Furthermore, the three methods in profiling analysis were compared with the same pair RNA samples. All the results indicated that the fidelity, reproducibility, and reliability showed no significant difference with conventional total RNA or mRNA microarrays.

Abstract:We analyzed the relationship between the conservation behavior of farmers and their environmental attitude and knowledge, whilst controlling for exogenous socio-economic factors. We employed the structural equation model with cross-sectional data from 442 farmers from the Guanzhong Plain of China. Results showed that local farmers generally possessed a positive environmental attitude and undertook considerable conservation action. Conservation behavior was directly affected by environmental attitude and indirectly by environmental knowledge (via attitude). Social networks, farm size, land rights, age and incentives were significant exogenous explanatory variables. Thus, understanding the importance of socio-behavioral characteristics, including the environmental attitude and knowledge of farmers, is important for the development of farmland conservation policies. Specifically, farmers in this area were found to significantly depend on each other for information on farmland conservation practices. Thus, role model farmer discussions, dissemination of environmentally friendly techniques via social networks and the rewarding of environmentally friendly behavior among farmers should be used to encourage ongoing restoration endeavors, and thereby help mitigate environmental degradation.

Abstract:Nature education based on natural environments, such as nature reserves, has been thriving worldwide for several decades with abundant positive results concerning improvement in public environmental attitude and behaviors. However, whether the public-oriented nature education can also indirectly reach out to benefit employees, namely, employees' "informal learning in nature education", remains understudied. The present study addressed this gap by making a preliminary exploration in fifteen nature reserves in China with an online survey, and we found that employees could be positively affected by informally acquired nature education in terms of increased self-reported ecological conservation behaviors. Besides, we revealed the underlying mechanism that drives this positive effect—employees' indirectly acquired nature education could increase their environmental competence, leading to improved self-efficacy, which in turn elevates ecological conservation behaviors. We thereby discussed the implications of these results, offered practical suggestions for policy making, management practice and employees' self-enhancing, and we also identified directions for future research.
