Abstract:We described the hyphenation of photo-induced chemical vapor generation with high performance liquid chromatography–atomic fluorescence spectrometry (HPLC–AFS) for the quantification of inorganic mercury, methylmercury (MeHg) and ethylmercury (EtHg). In the developed procedure, formic acid in mobile phase was used for the photodecomposition of organomercury compounds and reduction of Hg2 + to mercury vapor under microwave/ultraviolet (MW/UV) irradiation. We optimized the proposed method studying the influence of several operating parameters, including the type of organic acid and its concentration, MW power, composition of HPLC mobile phase and catalytic action of TiO2 nanoparticles. Under the optimized conditions, the limits of detection were 0.15, 0.15 and 0.35 μg L− 1 for inorganic mercury, MeHg and EtHg, respectively. The developed method was validated by determination of the main analytical figures of merit and applied to the analysis of three certified reference materials. The online interfacing of liquid chromatography with photochemical-vapor generation–atomic fluorescence for mercury determination is simple, environmentally friendly, and represents an attractive alternative to the conventional tetrahydroborate (THB) system.

Abstract:Microwave-assisted digestion permits a rapid and total dissolution of sediments and various other sample types, allowing easier and more accurate multi-element determinations. In this study, we present an optimised microwave digestion method for the complete digestion of 200 mg of carbonate-rich sediments. The optimised method prevents the formation of precipitates and assures a complete dissolution of the material. The optimised method involves treatment with concentrated hydrochloric acid (HCl) prior to microwave digestion, which prevents the formation of an insoluble calcium fluoride precipitate associated with the use of hydrofluoric acid (HF). Three different certified reference samples along with a pure calcium carbonate standard and a carbonate-rich in-house marine sediment sample were considered. Sediments were found to only be partially digested if insufficient HF was present, while a noticeable fluoride-based precipitate was found if excess HF was present. Twenty elements were analysed using sector field inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) (Al, Ag, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, Sr, Th, Ti, U, V and Zn). A total sample digestion with average elemental recoveries above 90% was obtained by reacting carbonate-rich samples with HCl on a hotplate at 150°C for 2 h (time for the total release of generated CO2), prior to any microwave digestion step. This extra step prevented the accumulation of gas in the sealed vessels during digestion, which would otherwise influence the carbonate chemical equilibria and make insoluble calcium available for precipitation. After this initial treatment, the improved digestion method consisted of microwave attack employing a mix of concentrated HCl, nitric acid (HNO3) and HF (4 mL/10 mL/2 mL), followed by evaporation on a hotplate. The limits of detection (LOD) obtained using the optimised microwave protocol and ICP-MS measurements were below 0.1 µg/kg for the trace elements and below 0.2 mg/kg for major elements.

Abstract:We reported a simple technique allowing accurate and precise Nd and Hf isotope measurements of samples with low contents using a Neptune Plus MC-ICP-MS and an Apex Omega membrane de-solvating system. By employing a highly sensitive jet sample cone and X skimmer cone, our protocol achieved a low oxide level (<0.05%) at high ion transmission (∼880 V ppm −1 for Nd and 850 V ppm −1 for Hf) and was found to have little effect on the mass fractionation of Nd and Hf. This was accomplished by simple adjustments of the sweep gas of the membrane de-solvating system and the sample gas of the nebulizer. Instrumental sensitivities were enhanced by a factor exceeding tenfold, in comparison to those of standard measurements with wet plasma. Long term measurements of 1 ng Nd solution standards yielded 143 Nd/ 144 Nd ratios of 0.512117 ± 0.000032 (2SD, n = 24) and 0.512227 ± 0.000036 (2SD, n = 42) for Jndi-1 and JMC-Nd solutions, respectively, while analysis of 1 ng JMC475 Hf gave 176 Hf/ 177 Hf ratios of 0.282163 ± 0.000027 (2SD, n = 21). These results are in agreements with their reference values. Potential interfering elements Ce and Sm are found to have an insignificant influence on 143 Nd/ 144 Nd ratios. Lu and Yb have a remarkable effect on 176 Hf/ 177 Hf ratios. Improved correction performance can be achieved by using Lu and Yb ratios obtained by analyzing pure Lu and Yb solutions. Five chemically purified rock reference materials are measured with the presented method and the results are consistent with their recommended values. Relative to other approaches, this protocol is rapid and accurate and can be widely applied in Nd and Hf isotope analysis of samples with trace amounts of Nd and Hf (<10 ng).

Abstract:Toxicity, mobility, bioavailability and biofunctions of chromium, cadmium, mercury and lead are heavily dependent upon their specific chemical forms, leading to a high demand to metal speciation analysis rather than total quantification. Simultaneous speciation analysis of multiple metal(loid)s is attractive to a large sample capacity containing unstable analytes due to its economic and environmental advantages over the conventional single elemental strategies. In this work, an analytical method integrating online solid phase extraction into high performance liquid chromatography interfaced with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to simultaneously preconcentrate and quantify Cr, Cd, Hg and Pb forms in pg L-1 levels in water was developed. Cr (III + VI), Cd(II), Hg(II), Pb(II), methylmercury (MeHg), ethylmercury (EtHg), and trimethyl (TML) and triethyl lead (TEL) were captured by the C18 adsorbent (equilibrated with 10 mL of 1.0 mM 2-hydroxyethanethiol at 10 mL min-1) and eluted by mobile phase (5.0 mM Cys at pH 2.0), then completely separated on the C18 column within 8.0 min and eventually determined by ICP-MS. Low limits of detection (0.001-0.007 ng L-1) and quantification (0.003-0.023 ng L-1), good relative standard deviations (<4%) and high enrichment factors (827-2656 folds) were obtained with good linearities. Three reference materials of total cadmium (GBW08602), total mercury (GBW08603) and total lead (GBW08601) in water were analyzed by the developed method to validate the accuracy with good agreement with certified values and satisfactory recoveries (92-100%). This method was proved feasible by the determination of Cr, Cd, Hg and Pb compounds in drinking water, river water, pond water and tap water.

Abstract:Tungsten is an emerging environmental pollutant. However, a proved robust method for preserving and determining the concentrations of tungsten in environmental media is still lacking. This study examined and compared the suitability of classic methods and previously reported tungsten-oriented methods on preserving dissolved tungsten and recovering tungsten from soil/sediment matrix. Tungsten concentrations in the water samples and digestates were then determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Our data showed that the tungsten-oriented HF and alkaline preservatives indeed successfully maintained the stability of dissolved tungsten. Even when preserved using HNO3 or HCl, dissolved tungsten concentrations did not notably change in most of our water samples over the course of ∼4 months. Using glass containers for storing water samples also did not produce much difference from using high-density polyethylene containers. Our data further suggested that the addition of HF in digestion was important for tungsten solubilization from soil/sediment matrix. The digestion methods with HNO3/HCl/HF and HNO3/HF/NH4OH/EDTA both yielded quantitative recoveries of tungsten from certified reference materials and known synthetic samples, while the other tested methods had limited recoveries. The methods validated by this study could be used to accurately determine tungsten concentrations in environmental media and thereby to assess the fate and potential risks of tungsten.
Simultaneous Multi-Elemental Speciation of As, Hg and Pb by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry Interfaced with High-Performance Liquid Chromatography

Abstract:This work establishes a hyphenated methodology coupling HPLC with ICP-MS for simultaneous speciation analysis of arsenic, mercury and lead for the first time. Four arsenicals (As(III), DMA, MMA and As(V)), four mercurials (Hg(II), MeHg, EtHg and PhHg) and three lead compounds (Pb(II), TML and TEL) were simultaneously analyzed within only 8 min with acceptable resolution (2.0-8.2 for As, 1.6-6.1 for Hg and 2.7-4.0 for Pb). The detection limits were 0.036-0.20 for As-species, 0.023-0.041 for Hg-species, and 0.0076-0.14 mu g L-1 for Pb-species. The developed method was applied for the measurement of five lotus seed samples, indicating the presence of DMA (19.6-28.2 mu g kg(-1)), TML (1.4-2.9 mu g kg(-1)), MeHg (1.2-4.8 mu g kg(-1)) and EtHg (0.8-2.2 mu g kg(-1)). This method provides a promising tool for studying the toxic, metabolic and bioavailable behaviors of arsenic, mercury and lead.
Flux-free fusion technique using a boron nitride vessel and rapid acid digestion for determination of trace elements by ICP-MS

Abstract:In this study, we present a new method for the dissolution of silicate rocks by flux-free fusion using a boron nitride vessel in preparation for analysis of bulk rock trace elements; this method is especially applicable to felsic intrusive rocks. The method was evaluated by analyzing five intrusive rocks (GSP-2, GSP-1, G-2, GSR-1 and QLO-1) and five extrusive rocks (AGV-2, BCR-2, BHVO-2, GSR-3 and RGM-2). The optimum conditions for the fusion of intrusive rocks were determined to be heating at 1600 degrees C for 1 min, which is effective to break up strong Si-O bonds. The fused glasses were dissolved using HF/HNO3 acids in closed screw-top Savillex vials on a hotplate; no high-pressure PTFE digestion bomb was required. Zr and Hf were completely recovered from the granodiorite GSP-2 reference material in 6 hours at 150 degrees C, which was 8 times faster than the method using a conventional high-pressure PTFE digestion bomb at 190 degrees C. The precision (RSD%, 1 s) of the elemental determinations in nearly 92% of the analyzed samples was better than 4%. Replicate analyses (n = 3) of the reference materials indicated that most of the results agreed with the reference values within a relative error of <10%. Additionally, the flux-free fusion retained all the materials in solution and was valid for volatile elements.

Abstract:We report the laser ablation multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-MC-ICP-MS) Hf-176/Hf-177 ratios for cassiterite of a known age and demonstrate that the Hf-176/Hf-177 ratios can be measured accurately and reproducibly with adequate precision for cassiterite with Hf contents around 100 mu g g(-1). Although cassiterite only has minor rare earth elements (REEs), corrections for Yb and Lu interferences are required as they may affect the determination of the Hf-176/Hf-177 ratios. Among the investigated samples, Rond-A has a homogeneous Hf isotopic composition. We recommend cassiterite sample Rond-A as a primary reference material for in situ Hf isotope analysis. The Kard sample has a homogeneous Hf isotopic composition and is suitable as a primary reference material once its Hf isotopic composition has been confirmed by solution-based MC-ICP-MS. Samples BB#7, 19MP, and 19GX showed minor variations in their Hf isotopic compositions and, therefore, can only be used as secondary reference materials.
Combined chemical separation of Lu, Hf, Rb, Sr, Sm and Nd from a single rock digest and precise and accurate isotope determinations of Lu–Hf, Rb–Sr and Sm–Nd isotope systems using Multi-Collector ICP-MS and TIMS

Abstract:A combined procedure for separating Lu, Hf, Rb, Sr, Sm and Nd from a single sample digestion is presented in this paper. The procedure consists of the following four steps: (1) sample dissolution in a mixture of concentrated HF–HNO3–HClO4; (2) Lu and Hf separation from the Rb, Sr, LMREE and other matrix elements by HF-free extraction chromatography; (3) Rb, Sr and LMREE separation from other matrix elements using a cation-exchange resin; (4) Sm and Nd separation from others LMREE by extraction chromatography. Analytical feasibility, flexibility and reproducibility of Rb–Sr, Sm–Nd and Lu–Hf isotope systems are demonstrated for international standard solutions and Certified Reference Materials (CRMs). Results show good agreement with previously reported values by isotope dilution methods, indicating the technique has fewer problems in respect to well-known sample inhomogeneity of natural geological materials and demonstrating its potential application to the study of limited and precious terrestrial rocks or minerals (like peridotite, kimberlite and xenoliths) and extra-terrestrial samples (like lunar rock and meteorites).
Simultaneous Determination of 50 Elements in Geochemical Samples by Low-Pressure Closed Digestion-ICP-MS

Abstract:Geochemical samples were digested using polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) crucibles with screw caps followed by ICP-MS analysis of 50 elements. Two-point standard curves were plotted using blank solution and national standard reference GSD-9 for stream sediments, and the acid system, digestion conditions, isotopes, and internal standards for each element were optimized. The results showed that the detection limits for most elements were less than 0.2 μg/g, and the relative standard deviations for all elements ranged from 1.1% to 16.4%. The measured values were in agreement with the certified values of national standard references. This method not only significantly reduces the amount of acid used and avoids dust contamination, but also accurately determines some volatile elements. In addition, it has the advantages of easy operation and high pretreatment efficiency, making it very suitable for laboratories with large numbers of samples and multiple elements to be tested.

Abstract:Abstract In this work, a two-step sequential extraction scheme for the determination of trace elements in Arctic PM 10 samples was optimized by using two certified reference materials (CRMs). By means of an experimental design for qualitative variables, the five most common extracting solutions for particulate matter (PM) sequential extraction (high purity water (HPW), 0.032 M HNO 3 , 0.022 M HCl, 0.11 M CH 3 COOH, and 0.012 M CH 3 COOH/CH 3 COONH 4 buffer) and two different extraction methods (stirring and ultrasounds) were compared. The purpose of the study was the identification of the procedure which gives the best estimation of the anthropogenic portion of the elements present in PM 10 samples. The use of ultrasounds instead of stirring induced a low but significant decrease of the extraction of all the elements and a decrease in the repeatability of the procedure. Diluted HNO 3 was the extractant which allowed to maximize the extraction of anthropogenic elements (As, Cd, Pb, Zn) with respect to crustal ones (Al, Si, Ti). The optimized procedure proved successful in avoiding contaminations and, therefore, suitable to be applied to PM samples having extremely low concentrations, such as samples collected in polar or other remote areas. The chosen procedure was applied to ten Arctic PM 10 samples, allowing for a better identification of their sources. Indeed, it was possible to hypothesize that even though the concentrations of As, Cd, K, Mg, Mn, and Ni in spring and summer were different, their mobility and, therefore, their chemical form in the analyzed PM 10 samples were probably similar.

Abstract:A method combining inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) with inductively coupled plasma–optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) was developed for multielement determination of 50 species of major, minor, micro, and trace, rare earth, and rare elements in geological samples. The geological samples of stream sediment, soil, and rock were dissolved with HCl-HNO3-HF-HClO4. The instrumental operating parameters were optimized, and the best analytical parameters were determined. The influences of ICP-OES and ICP-MS interferences were investigated. The optimal spectral lines and best isotopes were chosen, and the internal standard elements of 185Re and 103Rh were selected to compensate for signals drifting and for matrix effects. Therefore, the standard solutions were prepared by simultaneously dissolving the certified reference material (CRM) with the samples. The elements of Ti, V, Mn, Ba, Sr, Li, Be, Sc, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Pb were determined by both ICP-MS and ICP-OES, which show a good correlation between measured values. The methods were used to determine the CRM of stream sediment (GBW07301a, GBW07365), soil (GBW07408, GBW07452) and rock (GBW07107, GBW07121 and GBW07122), and the determined results were in agreement with the certified values for simultaneous determination of 50 elements for bulk geological samples.

Abstract:We describe a method for LA-ICP-MS elemental analysis of geological materials using low-dilution Li-borate fused glass WDXRF pellets, with samples, drift monitor, and 18 reference materials (RMs) identically prepared. After analysis for 46 elements by WDXRF, LA-ICP-MS intensities from samples and RMs are collected, and background corrected with Iolite software. HALite , a new software application, was developed to derive the elemental compositions from the LA-ICP-MS net signals. In HALite , elements are drift corrected using polynomial functions, and flux-fused RM element sensitivities are calculated from known mass fractions. Multiple internal standard (IS) elements are used to model each sample's laser response. Analyte mass fractions in unknowns are determined using the calibrated sensitivity correlation models for multiple IS elements. Either the WDXRF mass fractions or the initial round of calculated LA-ICP-MS mass fractions are used to calculate weighted mean sensitivities. Validation experiments with flux-fused RMs run as unknowns yield results with less than 5-10% total relative uncertainty for most analytes. We derive equations which allow calculation of the precision and total uncertainty as a function of mass fraction for each analyte element. Special focus was put on the determination of technology-critical elements (TCEs), to which, e.g. Li, Be, Ga, Ge, Nb, Sb, Ta, Tl, Bi, and the rare-earth elements (REEs, lanthanides and Y) are counted. Closed-vessel microwave digestion was performed using HNO 3 , H 2 O 2 and HBF 4 . The average bias for certified values is − 1% ± 13% ( SD ). Limits of detection ( x L ) in the measured solutions lie between 13 fg g −1 (Tb) and 52 ng g −1 (Ca). This article seeks to provide an optimised measurement procedure for the determination of element mass fractions of emerging importance in environmental samples, which are challenging to analyse with more traditional techniques such as single-quad ICP-MS. In addition, it aims to improve the characterisation of commonly used plant reference materials by providing mass fraction data for rarely studied elements.

Abstract:In this study, a method for rock digestion using a single reaction chamber (SRC) microwave system was established. Nitric acid (HNO 3 ) and hydrofluoric acid (HF) were used as digestion agents, and the determination of mercury (Hg) in rocks was performed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The optimal conditions for the SRC microwave system were achieved at 260 °C and 70 bar, with a mixture of 3 mL of 65–68 wt% HNO 3 and 1 mL of 49 wt% HF when the sample weight is in the range of 0.025–0.05 g. The method quantitation limit (MQL) was determined to be 0.0016 mg kg −1 . Measurement accuracy was evaluated using five Chinese nationally certified reference materials, demonstrating good consistency between measurement results and certified values. The method was applied to two rock samples, resulting in a recovery rate ranging from 105% to 109%. This method exhibits high sensitivity, stability, and low acid consumption. Importantly, it provides a reliable and efficient determination method for Hg in rocks, which is of great significance in geochemical analysis.

Tetrafluoroboric Acid Digestion for Accurate Determination of Rare Earth Elements in Coal and Fly Ash by ICP-MS Analysis

Abstract:Coal and coal-related fly ash often contain rare earth elements (REEs) that have the potential to be utilized as valuable mineral resources. Accurately determining the REE content in coal and fly ash is crucial for resource evaluation. The conventional approach involves using hydrofluoric acid (HF) to dissolve silicates and release REEs, which, however, prolongs the digestion process due to the additional step of complexing fluoride ions (F−) with boric acid (H3BO3). Determining the correct amount of H3BO3 for neutralization can be challenging, and in some instances, the binding of fluoride ions with certain lanthanides (Lns) hampers the accurate determination of all 14 naturally occurring rare earth elements in a single digestion batch by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). In this study, we present an alternative method that achieves the accurate determination of all 14 naturally occurring REEs using tetrafluoroboric acid (HBF4) followed by ICP-MS analysis. This approach eliminates the need for an F− complexing step. We tested this method on certified REE reference materials, including NIST 1632e (coal) and NIST 1633c (fly ash), as well as the REE geological reference material USGS AGV-1 (andesite). Our results demonstrated excellent recovery rates (relative standard deviation, RSD < ±10%), with a correlation coefficient (r2) exceeding 0.99. Using this method, we investigated the concentrations of all 14 REEs in coal and fly ash samples collected from various locations in the southwestern USA. This improved digestion technique streamlines the analysis process and enhances the accuracy of REE determination, facilitating a more comprehensive evaluation of REE-rich coal and fly ash deposits for resource exploration.

Abstract:The analysis of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) via sum parameters like extractable organic fluorine (EOF) in combination with high resolution-continuum source-graphite furnace molecular absorption spectrometry (HR-CS-GFMAS) is highly promising regarding fluorine sensitivity and selectivity. However, the HR-CS-GFMAS method includes several drying and heating steps which can lead to losses of volatile PFAS before the molecular formation step using e.g., GaF formation. Hence, the method leads to a strong discrimination of PFAS within the EOF depending on their physical/chemical properties and is therefore associated with reduced accuracy. To reduce this discrepancy and to indicate realistic PFAS pollution values, an optimization of the HR-CS-GFMAS method for PFAS analysis is needed. Hence, we determined fluorine response factors of several PFAS with different physical/chemical properties upon application of systematic optimization steps. We could therefore improve the method's sensitivity for PFAS analysis using a modifier drying pre-treatment step followed by a sequential injection of sample solutions. The highest improvement in sensitivity of volatile PFAS was shown upon addition of a Mg modifier during drying pre-treatment. Thereby, during optimization the relative standard deviation of fluorine response factors could be reduced from 55 % (initial method) to 27 % (optimized method) leading to a more accurate determination of organofluorine sum parameters. The method provides an instrumental LOD and LOQ of β(F) 1.71 μg/L and 5.13 μg/L, respectively. Further validation aimed to investigate several matrix effects with respect to water matrices. Here, substance-specific behavior was observed. For example, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) which was used as calibrator, showed signal suppressions upon high chloride concentrations (>50 mg/L). Hence, a thorough separation of Cl from analytes during sample preparation is needed for accurate sum parameter analysis.

Abstract:New method was developed to analyze Pu and Am sequentially for soil and sediment by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS). The developed method uses conc. HNO3 to leach Pu and Am, Fe(OH)3 coprecipitation to remove alkali and alkaline metals, extraction chromatographic separation using UTEVA, DGA and TEVA resins to remove interfering elements (IEs) and separate Pu and Am from each other, and sector field-ICPMS to measure Pu and Am. The analysis of four standard reference materials showed that both Pu isotopes and 241Am were accurately determined by this method, as a result of its excellent decontamination ability of IEs. Especially the high decontamination factor of Pu [DF(Pu), 4.2 × 102] in Am fraction and high DF(Am) (7.0 × 103) in Pu fraction sufficiently eliminated the cross interference between 241Pu and 241Am in ICPMS measurement. In addition, stable and high chemical recoveries were achieved for Pu (71–91%) and Am (70–88%). The low LODs of Pu isotopes, short analytical time (14 h) and high DFs of IEs allows this method to sequentially analyze Pu and Am, for both global fallout and nuclear accident sourced samples.
Resolving Uncertainties in the Quantification of Trace Elements within Organic-Rich Boreal Rivers for AF4-UV-ICP-MS Analysis

Abstract:Over the past few decades, asymmetric flow field-flow fractionation (AF4) has emerged as a robust technique for the separation of colloid-associated trace elements (TEs) in aqueous samples. Nevertheless, little is known about potential artifacts and how to control them when measuring the concentrations of colloid-associated elements at low (μg L-1) or ultralow concentrations (ng L-1) using AF4-UV-ICP-MS. Water from a boreal river was selected as a challenging test material due to its high concentrations of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and Fe-rich colloids. These colloids are expected to be significant contributors to artifact occurrence, even in a metal-free, ultraclean laboratory. The results show that the adsorption of Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, and Pb onto acid-cleaned, non-channel surfaces (such as connection tubing and autosampler) accounted for up to 48% of TE loss. These losses on non-channel surfaces also represent potential sources of cross-contamination for Co, Ni, Cu, and Pb. New, uncleaned poly(ether sulfone) membranes are also sources of contamination for Ni and Cu. Analytical bias may exist in the measured concentrations of TEs, primarily due to the potential carryover of weakly adsorbed TEs (e.g., Ni and Cu) on the system surfaces by colloids in the samples (e.g., DOM). On the other hand, colloids in the samples can also act to gradually remove contaminants from the surfaces. For these types of DOM-rich waters, preconditioning the AF4 system using 40 mg C L-1 of Suwannee River Natural Organic Matter (SRNOM, pH = 7) is recommended to mitigate the impact of membrane fouling and carryover. A comprehensive strategy for minimizing instrumental artifacts is presented and discussed.
