Abstract:Thermal camouflage has been successful in the conductive regime, where thermal metamaterials embedded in a conductive system can manipulate heat conduction inside the bulk. Most reported approaches are background-dependent and not applicable to radiative heat emitted from the surface of the system. A coating with engineered emissivity is one option for radiative camouflage, but only when the background has uniform temperature. Here, we propose a strategy for radiative camouflage of external objects on a given background using a structured thermal surface. The device is non-invasive and restores arbitrary background temperature distributions on its top. For many practical candidates of the background material with similar emissivity as the device, the object can thereby be radiatively concealed without a priori knowledge of the host conductivity and temperature. We expect this strategy to meet the demands of anti-detection and thermal radiation manipulation in complex unknown environments and to inspire developments in phononic and photonic thermotronics.

Abstract:Considerable advances in manipulating heat flow in solids have been made through the innovation of artificial thermal structures such as thermal diodes, camouflages, and cloaks. Such thermal devices can be readily constructed only at the macroscale by mechanically assembling different materials with distinct values of thermal conductivity. Here, we extend these concepts to the microscale by demonstrating a monolithic material structure on which nearly arbitrary microscale thermal metamaterial patterns can be written and programmed. It is based on a single, suspended silicon membrane whose thermal conductivity is locally, continuously, and reversibly engineered over a wide range (between 2 and 65 W/m·K) and with fine spatial resolution (10-100 nm) by focused ion irradiation. Our thermal cloak demonstration shows how ion-write microthermotics can be used as a lithography-free platform to create thermal metamaterials that control heat flow at the microscale.

Abstract:Radiative thermal management has advantages in precision electronic instruments owing to zero-energy consumption and high integration convenience. The possibility to acquire high-performance thermal stability through engineering the surface emissivity of object has been investigated. Herein, developing a smart coat was reported that could passively maintain the temperature of objects (silicon chips) in a predefined thermal window to avoid overheating or overcooling in vacuum. The technique implements using a multilayer structure incorporating a 30 nm thick VO2 phase-change medium having a 300% modulation depth for emissivity under varying temperatures. In the experiment, a 1.78 mu m thick smart coat could raise the temperature stability of a regular coat by similar to 2.0 times. The potential of the work remains in thermal radiation for smart temperature management especially in space applications.

Abstract:Spatially resolved dynamically reconfigurable control of thermal emission has comprehensive implications for fundamental science and technological applications, such as thermal camouflage and adaptive radiative heating/cooling. Materials and systems that can spatially control thermal emission with dynamic reconfigurability, simple manufacturability, and a large dynamic range have not been explored, so far. Here, a spatially resolved thermal emission control platform consisting of three components (a VO2 material with phase transition hysteresis, a thermal photonic device with a field-optimized planarized structure, and an optically controllable patterning system) is built and validated. This platform presents excellent merits such as spatially resolved control of thermal emission, multilevel (up to nine levels) emission control with a large dynamic range of the emissivity modulation (0.19 for the insulating phase and 0.91 for the metallic phase) over a broad bandwidth (8-14 mu m), and robust reconfigurability. The results demonstrate potential applications in the field of thermal photonics for information and energy harvesting.

Abstract:We demonstrate that recent advances in nanoscale thermal transport and temperature manipulation can be brought to bear on the problem of tailoring thermal radiation from compact emitters. We show that wavelength-scale composite bodies involving complicated arrangements of phase-change chalcogenide (GST) glasses and metals or semiconductors can exhibit large emissivities and partial directivities at mid-infrared wavelengths, a consequence of temperature localization within the GST. We consider multiple object topologies, including spherical, cylindrical, and mushroom-like composites, and show that partial directivity follows from a complicated interplay between particle shape, material dispersion, and temperature localization. Our calculations exploit a recently developed fluctuating-volume current formulation of electromagnetic fluctuations that rigorously captures radiation phenomena in structures with both temperature and dielectric inhomogeneities.

Abstract:Both the magnitude and spectrum of the blackbody radiation distribution change with temperature. Here, we designed the temperature-dependent spectral emissivity of a coating to counteract all the changes in the blackbody radiation distribution over a certain temperature range, enabled by the nonhysteretic insulator-to-metal phase transition of SmNiO3. At each wavelength within the long-wave infrared atmospheric-transparency window, the thermal radiance of our coating remains nearly constant over a temperature range of at least 20 °C. Our approach can conceal thermal gradients and transient temperature changes from infrared imaging systems, including those that discriminate by wavelength, such as multispectral and hyperspectral cameras.

Abstract:Switchable thermal emission in the long-wave infrared (LWIR, 8-14 mu m) range is of great significance in applications like thermal detection, radiative cooling, and infrared camouflage. Existing methods for switchable LWIR emission apply photonic structures incorporating smart materials, which either require a continuous input power or produce limited emissivity contrasts. In this study, two nonvolatile high-contrast switchable emitters over the whole LWIR range have been proposed utilizing the drastic permittivity change of In3SbTe2 (IST) upon crystallization. One switchable emitter exhibits negative differential emissivity (& UDelta;8N,8-14 mu m & AP; -0.75, emissivity decreases with temperature) and is experimentally applied to infrared camouflage; the other shows positive differential emissivity (& UDelta;8P,8-14 mu m & AP; 0.83, emissivity increases with temperature) and demonstrates its capability in thermal management. The demonstrated characteristics of IST provide a new route for realizing differential emissivity and make the IST-based emitters highly promising for applications such as infrared camouflage and thermal management.

Abstract:Thermal management is ubiquitous in the modern world and indispensable for a sustainable future. Radiative heat management provides unique advantages because the heat transfer can be controlled by the surface. However, different object emissivities require different tuning strategies, which poses challenges to develop dynamic and universal radiative heat management devices. Here, we demonstrate a triple-mode midinfrared modulator that can switch between passive heating and cooling suitable for all types of object surface emissivities. The device comprises a surface-textured infrared-semiabsorbing elastomer coated with a metallic back reflector, which is biaxially strained to sequentially achieve three fundamental modes: emission, reflection, and transmission. By analyzing and optimizing the coupling between optical and mechanical properties, we achieve a performance as follows: emittance contrast Δε = 0.58, transmittance contrast Δτ = 0.49, and reflectance contrast Δρ = 0.39. The device can provide a new design paradigm of radiation heat regulation for wearable, robotics, and camouflage technologies.

Abstract:Thermal radiation in the mid-infrared region profoundly affects human lives in various fields, including thermal management, imaging, sensing, camouflage, and thermography. Due to their fixed emissivities, radiance features of conventional materials are usually proportional to the quadruplicate of surface temperature, which set the limit, that one type of material can only present a single thermal function. Therefore, it is necessary and urgent to design materials for dynamic thermal radiation regulations to fulfill the demands of the age of intelligent machines. Recently, the ability of some smart materials to dynamically regulate thermal radiation has been evaluated. These materials are found to be competent enough for various commands, thereby, providing better alternatives and tremendously promoting the commercial potentials. In this review, the dynamic regulatory mechanisms and recent progress in the evaluation of these smart materials are summarized, including thermochromic materials, electrochromic materials, mechanically and humidity responsive materials, with the potential applications, insufficient problems, and possible strategies highlighted.

Abstract:Coating structures with dynamically adjustable infrared emissivity are crucial in spacecraft components to cope with the transient thermal environments of space. For a long time, thermochromic phase change materials have been widely used in applications requiring emissivity adjustment, and optimizing the range of adjustable infrared emissivity has always been at the forefront of research. However, reducing the absorption of solar radiation has significant implications for the practical application and thermal stability of spacecraft components in space environments. In this paper, we propose a multilayer film structure based on the phase change material VO2 combined with the materials ZnSe and ITO to achieve low solar radiation absorption and adjustable infrared emissivity for intelligent thermal radiators in space. Through finite element simulation analysis of the structure, we achieve a solar radiation absorption rate of 0.3 and an adjustable infrared emissivity of 0.49. According to Stefan–Boltzmann's law, the structure exhibits strong radiative heat dissipation at high temperatures and weak energy dissipation at low temperatures to maintain the thermal stability of the device and ensure efficient operation. The intelligent thermal radiator operates based on the principles of Fabry–Perot resonance. Therefore, the multilayer structure based on the phase change material VO2 demonstrates excellent performance in both solar radiation absorption and adjustable infrared emissivity, showcasing its tremendous potential in the field of intelligent thermal control in aerospace.

Abstract:Existing thermal metamaterials are mostly designed to work at room temperature, where thermal conduction is the dominant method of heat transfer. Unfortunately, as the temperature increases, thermal radiation becomes non-negligible, and hence these thermal metamaterials can no longer work. The inability to handle thermal radiation largely limits practical applications at high temperatures, such as thermal protection. To solve this problem, here we propose an effective-medium theory to manipulate thermal radiation with the Rosseland diffusion approximation. This theory helps to design three radiative metamaterials even with anisotropic geometries, including transparency, cloak, and expander. Theoretical analyses are further confirmed by finite-element simulations, which indicate that these radiative metamaterials behave well in both steady and transient states. This work not only offers an effective-medium theory to manipulate thermal radiation but also designs three radiative metamaterials. These results may provide hints for novel thermal management and have potential applications in radiative camouflage, radiative diodes, etc.
Non-equilibrium Thermal Super-radiation of Real Materials

Abstract:We elucidate the theoretically maximal thermal radiation power from real materials at a given temperature. Our results demonstrate that the thermal radiation from real materials may be larger than the blackbody emission in free space,and indicate that this is rooted in the high refractive index of the materials. The refractive index contrast between the materials and environment dictates the radiation of real materials genetically not under thermodynamic equilibrium, but on the other hand can give rise to a larger density of photonic modes than that of the blackbody. One key to maximize the thermal radiation is to minimize the impedance mismatch of the materials with environment. By following this principle, we present a design of a carbon core coated by a four-layer transparent shell with gradually changed refractive indexes that can emit > 30 times more power than the blackbody, which reasonably approaches the predicted radiation maximum.

Abstract:Electromagnetic absorbing materials may convert electromagnetic energy into heat energy and dissipate it. However, in high-power electromagnetic radiation environment, the temperature of the absorbing material rises significantly and even burns. It becomes critical to ensure electromagnetic absorption performance while minimizing temperature rise. Here, we systematically study the coupling mechanism between the electromagnetic field and the temperature field when the absorbing material is irradiated by electromagnetic waves. We find out the influence of the constitutive parameters of the absorbing materials (including uniform and non-uniform) on the temperature distribution. Finally, through a smart design, we achieve better absorption and lower temperature simultaneously. The accuracy of the model is affirmed as simulation results aligned with theoretical analysis. This work provides a new avenue to control the temperature distribution of absorbing materials.

Dynamic Modulation of Radiative Heat Transfer beyond the Blackbody Limit

Abstract:Dynamic control of electromagnetic heat transfer without changing mechanical configuration opens possibilities in intelligent thermal management in nanoscale systems. We confirmed by experiment that the radiative heat transfer is dynamically modulated beyond the blackbody limit. The near-field electromagnetic heat exchange mediated by phonon-polariton is controlled by the metal-insulator transition of tungsten-doped vanadium dioxide. The functionalized heat flux is transferred over an area of 1.6 cm2 across a 370 nm gap, which is maintained by the microfabricated spacers and applied pressure. The uniformity of the gap is validated by optical interferometry, and the measured heat transfer is well modeled as the sum of the radiative and the parasitic conductive components. The presented methodology to form a nanometric gap with functional heat flux paves the way to the smart thermal management in various scenes ranging from highly integrated systems to macroscopic apparatus.
Taming the Blackbody with Metamaterials

Abstract:In this paper we demonstrate, for the first time, selective thermal emitters based on metamaterials perfect absorbers. We experimentally realize a narrow band mid-infrared (MIR) thermal emitter. Multiple metamaterial sublattices further permit construction of a dual-band MIR emitter. By performing both emissivity and absorptivity measurements, we find that emissivity and absorptivity agree very well as predicted by Kirchhoff's law of thermal radiation. Our results directly demonstrate the great flexibility of metamaterials for tailoring blackbody emission.

Abstract:Tailoring the spectrum of thermal radiation at high temperatures is a central issue in the study of thermal radiation harnessed energy resources. Although bulk metals with periodic cavities incorporated into their surfaces provide high emissivity, they require a complicated micron metal etch, thereby precluding reliable, continuous operation. Here, we report thermally stable, highly emissive, ultrathin (<20 nm) tungsten (W) radiators that were prepared in a scalable and cost-effective route. Alumina/W/alumina multiwalled, submicron cavity arrays were fabricated sequentially using nanoimprinting lithography, thin film deposition, and calcination processes. To highlight the practical importance of high-temperature radiators, we developed a thermophotovoltaic (TPV) system equipped with fabricated W radiators and low-bandgap GaSb photovoltaic cells. The TPV system produced electric power reliably during repeated temperature cycling between 500 and 1200 K; the power density at 1200 K was fixed to be approximately 1.0 W/cm2. The temperature-dependent electric power was quantitatively reproduced using a one-dimensional energy conversion model. The symmetric configuration of alumina/W/alumina multiwall together with the presence of a void inside each cavity alleviated thermal stress, which was responsible for the stable TPV performance. The short-current-density (JSC) of developed TPV system was augmented significantly by decreasing the W thickness below its skin depth. A 17 nm thick W radiator yielded a 32% enhancement in JSC compared to a 123 nm thick W radiator. Electromagnetic analysis indicated that subskin-depth W cavity arrays led to suppressed surface reflection due to the mitigated screening effect of free electrons, thereby enhancing the absorption of light within each W wall. Such optical tunneling-mediated absorption or radiation was valid for any metal material and morphology (e.g., planar or patterned).

Abstract:Abstract Nanophotonic engineering of light–matter interaction at subwavelength scale allows thermal radiation that is fundamentally different from that of traditional thermal emitters and provides exciting opportunities for various thermal-photonic applications. We propose a new kind of integrated and electrically controlled thermal emitter that exploits layered metamaterials with lithography-free and dielectric/metallic nanolayers. We demonstrate both theoretically and experimentally that the proposed concept can create a strong photonic bandgap in the visible regime and allow small impedance mismatch at the infrared wavelengths, which gives rise to optical features of significantly enhanced emissivity at the broad infrared wavelengths of 1.4–14 μm as well as effectively suppressed emissivity in the visible region. The electrically driven metamaterial devices are optically and thermally stable at temperatures up to ∼800 K with electro-optical conversion efficiency reaching ∼30%. We believe that the proposed high-efficiency thermal emitters will pave the way toward integrated infrared light source platforms for various thermal-photonic applications and particularly provide a novel alternative for cost-effective, compact, low glare, and energy-efficient infrared heating.

Abstract:The overheating/cooling of spacecraft solar cells under the contrastive temperature variation due to solar influence leads to severe consequences on both its performance and its long‐term stability. Radiative thermal management by broadband optical modulating coating provides a versatile and effective solution for spatial environments. Here, we design a visible‐to‐mid‐infrared broadband modulating metal oxides‐based electrochromic coating for spacecraft solar cell thermal management. Upon impedance matching between multilayered architecture and control of crystallinity of WO3 with optimized morphology, the final coating successfully presents reversible transition from solar transmitter and thermal emitter to heat preserving coating with infrared (IR) stealth ability. The transmission spectrum of the coating in its bleached state fits the solar spectrum curve (0.3‐1.2 μm) for photocurrent harvesting and it transmits up to 88% at 450 nm, at the solar radiation peak. The average mid‐infrared (MIR) (2‐16 μm) emissivity of the coating is 80%, with a tunability of 20% in average. The demonstrated capabilities of broadband modulating electrochromic coating are highly promising for solar cell thermoregulation in space or terrestrial environments and also for IR‐stealth applications in the defense sector.

Infrared thermochromic antenna composite for self-adaptive thermoregulation

Abstract:Self-adaptive thermoregulation, the mechanism living organisms use to balance their temperature, holds great promise for decarbonizing cooling and heating processes. The functionality can be effectively emulated by engineering the thermal emissivity of materials to adapt to background temperature variations. Yet, solutions that marry large emissivity switching (${\Delta}\epsilon$) with scalability, cost-effectiveness and design freedom are still lacking. Here, we fill this gap by introducing infrared dipole antennas made of tunable thermochromic materials. We demonstrate that non-spherical antennas (rods, stars and flakes) made of vanadium-dioxide can exhibit a massive (~200-fold) increase in their absorption cross-section as temperature rises. Embedding these antennas in polymer films, or simply spraying them directly, creates free-form thermoregulation composites, featuring an outstanding ${\Delta}\epsilon\sim0.6$ in spectral ranges that can be tuned at will. Our research paves the way for versatile self-adaptive heat management solutions (coatings, fibers, membranes and films) that could find application in radiative-cooling, heat-sensing, thermal-camouflage, and other.

Abstract:Dynamic infrared emissivity regulators, which can efficiently modulate infrared radiation beyond vision, have emerged as an attractive technology in the energy and information fields. The realization of the independent modulation of visible and infrared spectra is a challenging and important task for the application of dynamic infrared emissivity regulators in the fields of smart thermal management and multispectral camouflage. Here, we demonstrate an electrically controlled infrared emissivity regulator that can achieve independent modulation of the infrared emissivity while maintaining a high visible transparency (84.7% at 400–760 nm). The regulators show high degree of emissivity regulation (0.51 at 3–5 μm, 0.41 at 7.5–13 μm), fast response ( 10 4 cycles).
