Abstract:The marine environment is being increasingly modified by the construction of artificial structures, the impacts of which may be mitigated through eco-engineering. To date, eco-engineering has predominantly aimed to increase biodiversity, but enhancing other ecological functions is arguably of equal importance for artificial structures. Here, we manipulated complexity through habitat structure (flat, and 2.5 cm, 5 cm deep vertical and 5 cm deep horizontal crevices) and seeding with the native oyster (Saccostrea glomerata, unseeded and seeded) on concrete tiles (0.25 m × 0.25 m) affixed to seawalls to investigate whether complexity (both orientation and depth of crevices) influences particle removal rates by suspension feeders and colonisation by different functional groups, and whether there are any ecological trade-offs between these functions. After 12 months, complex seeded tiles generally supported a greater abundance of suspension feeding taxa and had higher particle removal rates than flat tiles or unseeded tiles. The richness and diversity of taxa also increased with complexity. The effect of seeding was, however, generally weaker on tiles with complex habitat structure. However, the orientation of habitat complexity and the depth of the crevices did not influence particle removal rates or colonising taxa. Colonisation by non-native taxa was low compared to total taxa richness. We did not detect negative ecological trade-offs between increased particle removal rates and diversity and abundance of key functional groups. Our results suggest that the addition of complexity to marine artificial structures could potentially be used to enhance both biodiversity and particle removal rates. Consequently, complexity should be incorporated into future eco-engineering projects to provide a range of ecological functions in urbanised estuaries.
Provision of refugia and seeding with native bivalves can enhance biodiversity on vertical seawalls

Abstract:Recent studies have suggested that increasing habitat complexity of artificial seawalls by modifying surface heterogeneity could enhance exploitable habitat and therefore species richness and abundance. We tested the effects of adding complex tiles (with crevices/ledges) of different heterogeneity (i.e., flat tiles resembling the seawall vs. tiles with crevices of 2.5 cm or 5.0 cm depth) and seeding with native rock oysters, Saccostrea cuccullata (unseeded vs. seeded) on species richness and abundances of intertidal marine organisms on two vertical seawalls in Hong Kong. Tiles were affixed to the mid-intertidal zone of the seawalls for 12 months. The results showed that the tiles with crevices had greater species richness and cover of sessile epifauna than flat tiles. Seeding tiles with S. cuccullata also facilitated natural recruitment of the same species. Our results support the hypothesis that using eco-engineering to increase habitat complexity can enhance the biodiversity of intertidal marine organisms on seawalls.
Complexity–biodiversity relationships on marine urban structures: reintroducing habitat heterogeneity through eco-engineering

Abstract:Urbanization is leading to biodiversity loss through habitat homogenization. The smooth, featureless surfaces of many marine urban structures support ecological communities, often of lower biodiversity, distinct from the complex natural habitats they replace. Eco-engineering (design for ecological co-benefits) seeks to enhance biodiversity and ecological functions on urban structures. We assessed the benefits to biodiversity of retrofitting four types of complex habitat panels to an intertidal seawall at patch (versus flat control panels) and site (versus unmodified control seawalls and reference rocky shores) scales. Two years after installation, patch-scale effects of complex panels on biodiversity ranged from neutral to positive, depending on the protective features they provided, though all but one design (honeycomb) supported unique species. Water-retaining features (rockpools) and crevices, which provided moisture retention and cooling, increased biodiversity and supported algae and invertebrates otherwise absent. At the site scale, biodiversity benefits ranged from neutral at the high- and mid-intertidal to positive at the low-intertidal elevation. The results highlight the importance of matching eco-engineering interventions to the niche of target species, and environmental conditions. While species richness was greatest on rockpool and crevice panels, the unique species supported by other panel designs highlights that to maximize biodiversity, habitat heterogeneity is essential.
Vertical arrays of artificial rockpools on a seawall provide refugia across tidal levels for intertidal species in the UK

Abstract:Eco-engineering of coastal infrastructure aims to address the insufficient intertidal habitat provided by coastal development and flood defence. There are numerous ways to enhance coastal infrastructure with habitat features, but a common method involves retrofitting artificial rockpools. Often these are 'bolt-on' units that are fixed to existing coastal infrastructure but there is a paucity of literature on how to optimise their arrangement for biodiversity. In this study, 24 artificial rockpools were installed at three levels between High Water Neaps and Mean Tide Level on a vertical concrete seawall on the south coast of the UK. The species abundance of the rockpools and adjacent seawall were surveyed at low tide for 2 years following rockpool installation and compared. Over the course of the study, sediment had begun to accumulate in some of the rockpools. At the 2-year mark, the sediment was removed and assessed for macrofauna. Algal biomass of the seawall and rockpools was estimated using previously obtained dry weight values for the dominant algae taxa. After 2 years, it was determined that artificial rockpools successfully increase species richness of seawalls, particularly at higher tidal levels where water-retaining refugia are crucial for many species. The rockpools hosted 37 sessile taxa and 9 sessile taxa were recorded on the seawall. Rockpools increased the vertical elevation for brown canopy-forming seaweeds by providing better attachment surfaces. Although the retained sediment only hosted 3 infaunal species, it was observed to provide shelter for shore crabs during surveys. As sea levels and ocean and air temperatures continue to rise, vertical eco-engineering arrangements will play a crucial role in allowing species to migrate up the tidal zone, negating habitat loss and localised extinction.
Complexity-functioning relationships differ across different environmental conditions

Abstract:Habitat complexity is widely considered an important determinant of biodiversity, and enhancing complexity can play a key role in restoring degraded habitats. However, the effects of habitat complexity on ecosystem functioning – as opposed to biodiversity and community structure – are relatively poorly understood for artificial habitats, which dominate many coastlines. With Greening of Grey Infrastructure (GGI) approaches, or eco-engineering, increasingly being applied around the globe, it is important to understand the effects that modifying habitat complexity has on both biodiversity and ecological functioning in these highly modified habitats. We assessed how manipulating physical (primary substrate) and/or biogenic habitat (bivalves) complexity on intertidal artificial substrata affected filtration rates, net and gross primary productivity (NPP and GPP, respectively) and community respiration (CR) – as well as abundance of filter feeders and macro-algae and habitat use by cryptobenthic fish across six locations in three continents. We manipulated both physical and biogenic complexity using 1) flat or ridged (2.5 cm or 5 cm) settlement tiles that were either 2) unseeded or seeded with oysters or mussels. Across all locations, increasing physical and biogenic complexity (5 cm seeded tiles) had a significant effect on most ecological functioning variables, increasing overall filtration rates and community respiration of the assemblages on tiles but decreasing productivity (both GPP and NPP) across all locations. There were no overall effects of increasing either type of habitat complexity on cryptobenthic fish MaxN, total time in frame or macro-algal cover. Within each location, there were marked differences in the effects of habitat complexity. In Hobart, we found higher filtration, filter feeder biomass and community respiration on 5 cm tiles compared to flat tiles. However, at this location, both macro-algae cover and GPP decreased with increasing physical complexity. Similarly in Dublin, filtration, filter feeder biomass and community respiration were higher on 5 cm tiles compared to less complex tiles. In Sydney, filtration and filter feeder biomass were higher on seeded than unseeded tiles, and fish MaxN was higher on 5 cm tiles compared to flat tiles. On unseeded tiles in Sydney, filter feeder biomass also increased with increasing physical complexity. Our findings suggest that GGI solutions via increased habitat complexity are likely to have trade-offs among potentially desired functions, such as productivity and filtration rates, and variable effects on cryptobenthic fish communities. Importantly, our results show that the effects of GGI practices can vary markedly according to the environmental context and therefore should not be blindly and uniformly applied across the globe.

Abstract:Foundation species are being restored into inherently variable landscapes with multiple, interspersed habitats. However, understanding of the influence of different neighbouring habitats on community assembly and the survival of restored species is limited, despite their significant potential to affect restoration outcomes. We tested how habitat‐setting (being next to seagrass, seagrass and mangroves, or unvegetated sediments) and predation (by meso‐ and/or large predators) influenced macroinvertebrate community assembly and the survival of juvenile Sydney rock oysters (Saccostrea glomerata) on experimental oyster reef units in the Port Hacking estuary, New South Wales, Australia. Each habitat‐setting produced a distinct macroinvertebrate community on experimental reefs, whereas predation had limited effects on community structure. Juvenile oysters were instead highly predated everywhere, and oyster predation was dominated by the large, transient fish Acanthropagrus australis. Our findings allow practitioners to predict and tailor the communities which establish on restored oyster reefs by strategically placing them next to different habitats. If sites have a high predation risk but require seeding for reefs to establish, then caging or complex substrates must be used to increase seeded oyster survival.

The influence of environmental context on community composition in artificial rockpools associated with seawalls

Abstract:Artificial structures have become widespread features of coastal marine environments, and will likely proliferate further over the coming decades. These constitute new hard substrata in the marine environment which provide a fundamentally different habitat than natural shores. Eco-engineering solutions aim to ameliorate these differences by combining ecological knowledge and engineering criteria in the construction and modification of artificial substrata. Vertipools™ are artificial bolt-on rockpools intended for deployment on seawalls, where they have been shown to provide biodiversity benefits. In this study, a total of 32 Vertipools were retrofitted on eight seawalls in different environmental contexts (estuarine vs marine and urban vs rural) along the Irish Sea coastline, and were exposed to the environment for a period of two years. After two years, there were no differences in species richness, species-abundance distributions, diversity, or community composition between the specific environmental contexts examined here. Site-level variation was significant, and communities on Vertipools deployed in marine contexts were more variable in general than those in estuarine contexts. Community composition differed significantly between structural sections of the Vertipools, indicating that different sections provide specific microhabitats for colonisation. This study indicates that Vertipools provide biodiversity benefits in a variety of environmental contexts, and therefore are broadly viable as an eco-engineering solution.
Combined Effects of Local and Regional Drivers on Oyster Spat Density and Growth in Eastern Australia

Abstract:Abstract Up to 85% of shellfish reefs have been lost worldwide, resulting in declining ecosystem services, and increasing restoration demand. However, more information regarding the conditions which maximise oyster settlement and growth is required to optimise restoration. We deployed oyster settlement tiles at 21 intertidal sites throughout Moreton Bay, Australia; a region where > 96% of rock oyster reefs are lost and demand for restoration is high. We quantified effects of variables describing the spatial (from GIS), local habitat (using quadrats and water quality measures), and oyster predator (using underwater videography) characteristics of sites on oyster density and size on tiles. Oyster density was highest at sites with intermediate predator abundance and temperature, highest nearby invertebrate cover, and low and high values of turbidity and nearby rock and algae cover. Conversely, oyster size was highest at sites with intermediate predator density, higher fish species richness and turbidity, and lowest temperatures. Together, this showed that optimal restoration requires sites with 22 to 23 °C average water temperatures, between 10 and 15 oyster predators, and either low ( 6 NTU) turbidity levels. Notably, we observed multiple peaks for several variables, suggesting the potential presence of multiple cryptic oyster species on settlement tiles. We found that oysters shared preferred environmental conditions with polychaetes, coralline algae, and tunicates, and were more prevalent and abundant at sites with lower turf algae, barnacle, and mussel cover. Identifying environmental variables influencing oyster population distribution, settlement, and growth can guide the selection and approach of oyster restoration sites.

Abstract:Our study shows that, to enhance fish diversity, it is important to provide three‐dimensional habitat architecture that incorporates a wide range of microhabitat sizes and types. Our findings also highlight some key considerations when assessing the performance of intervention designs, including spatial‐scale dependent effects of structural complexity, diel variation in fish‐microhabitat relationships, and choice of intervention assessment metric (i.e. taxonomic vs. functional diversity). The diversity‐habitat complexity relationship has been utilised widely in conservation and biodiversity enhancement interventions, but few studies have attempted to tease apart the components of complexity that drive this relationship. The ecological engineering of seawalls is one area where this topic has advanced, albeit not often at scales relevant to fish. We constructed habitat enhancement units (Simple, Complex and Freestyle 'fish houses') out of hollow concrete blocks and installed them at the base of tropical rip‐rap seawalls. Simple and Complex fish houses were cuboid, had the same surface area and volume and included 100 holes (microhabitats). The holes in Simple fish houses were all the same size, whereas 25 size variations were used in the Complex design (volume‐independent manipulation of a single complexity element). The Freestyle fish house was non‐cuboid and had more overall volume, microhabitat types and sizes. We examined the volume‐independent (Simple vs. Complex fish houses) and volume‐dependent (Freestyle fish house) effects of microhabitat complexity on fish taxonomic and functional assemblage metrics at two spatial scales and across diel cycles. We also investigated diurnal and nocturnal fish‐microhabitat size relationships. There was a modest, but not significant, volume‐independent effect of complexity on fish assemblages. The Freestyle design, however, supported significantly greater abundance, species richness, and distinct taxonomic and functional compositions. These results were dependent on spatial scales and diel cycles. Diel variation in fish activity patterns resulted in stronger size‐matching relationships between fish and microhabitats at night than during the day. Synthesis and applications. Our study shows that, to enhance fish diversity, it is important to provide three‐dimensional habitat architecture that incorporates a wide range of microhabitat sizes and types. Benthic communities influence coral seeding success at fine spatial scales

Abstract:The deployment of engineered substrates seeded with newly settled corals is a technique being developed to increase the numbers of juvenile corals on reefs with the goal of improving reef resilience in response to climate warming. Using a hierarchical sampling design, we explored the spatial scales at which seeded coral (spat) survival and growth varied in situ and investigated the environmental drivers of seeded spat success in the southern inshore Great Barrier Reef. After 10 months, variation in spat survival and size was greatest at the smallest spatial scale (1–2 m) (27 and 11% of variation, respectively), indicating the scale at which the main drivers of post‐settlement survival and growth are occurring. Crustose coralline algae (CCA) cover on seeding units prior to deployment was a significant driver of short‐ and long‐term spat survival (22% of variation). Survival of Acropora millepora and A. muricata spat did not differ according to benthic community variation. Increasing cover of branching Acropora corals was correlated with decreased survival and the size of Montipora aequituberculata spat, although CCA cover on plugs remained the most influential factor determining survival. Interspecific variation in spat survival and size and higher survival and size in the side‐facing orientation of the seeding units suggest natural variation in response to the seeding method, warranting further experiments to refine species selection and deployment methods prior to upscaling. High within‐site variation in seeded spat survival and size highlights the need for future studies of ecological factors driving post‐settlement mortality at fine spatial scales.

Abstract:Concrete infrastructure in coastal waters is increasing. While adding complex habitat and manipulating concrete mixtures to enhance biodiversity have been studied, field investigations of sub-millimetre-scale complexity and substrate colour are lacking. Here, the interacting effects of 'colour' (white, grey, black) and 'microtexture' (smooth, 0.5 mm texture) on colonisation were assessed at three sites in Australia. In Townsville, no effects of colour or microtexture were observed. In Sydney, spirorbid polychaetes occupied more space on smooth than textured tiles, but there was no effect of microtexture on serpulid polychaetes, bryozoans and algae. In Melbourne, barnacles were more abundant on black than white tiles, while serpulid polychaetes showed opposite patterns and ascidians did not vary with treatments. These results suggest that microtexture and colour can facilitate colonisation of some taxa. The context-dependency of the results shows that inclusion of these factors into marine infrastructure designs needs to be carefully considered.

Abstract:The substitution of natural habitats with artificial structures, such as coastal defence structures, has significantly detrimental effects on the marine biological community. In this context, the application of ecological engineering to marine ecosystems presents an opportunity to mitigate these environmental impacts and enhance ecosystem services. There are proposals aimed at mimicking structures found in the natural environment to increase topographic complexity in artificial substrates, thereby promoting biodiversity and hindering the establishment of invasive species. The present study focuses on assessing change in the biological community of intertidal pools constructed on existing coastal defence structures and their influence on a halo (5 cm) of humidity created around the pools. Using an inexpensive method, the tidepools were created at the beginning of 2014 using a pneumatic hammer (DeWalt brand D25902K), imitating the tidepools of the adjacent natural substrate. The coastal defence structures (riprap) which were selected for the study host climax communities since they were built >8 years ago. After 7.5 years of the creation of this microhabitat, the value of species richness in the tidepool was 64.2% higher than in the control, Shannon diversity 41.54% and functional diversity 6.27%. The study of the effect on a halo (5 cm) of humidity produced around the pool shows that Shannon diversity is higher than in the control treatment, demonstrating that the microhabitat created mitigates the harsh environmental (high temperature and desiccation) conditions of the intertidal zone beyond the interior of the tidepool. The results showed that the species richness in the tidepools was bigger in the high intertidal than the low, therefore it is more beneficial to create this microhabitat in high intertidal zone. The created microhabitats serve as shelter and breeding sites for animal species that were not previously observed in the studied artificial structure, as detected for species such as Pisania striata, Ocenebra edwarasii , Stramonita haemastoma , Meralarhaphe neritoides , Siphonaria pectinata, Paracentrotus lividus and Spirorbis sp., thus contribute to reducing the fragmentation of their populations. In terms of "ecological succession", the current study demonstrated that typical species of a mature benthic biological community had colonised the created microhabitat 7.5 years later. These species included the Anthozoa Anemonia sulcata , Actinia equina and Exaiptasia diaphana or the endangered Mollusc Dendropoma lebeche .

Abstract:To inform the performance of ecological engineering designs for artificial structures at sea, it is essential to characterise their impacts on the epibenthic communities colonising them. In this context, the present study aims to compare the community structure among natural and four different artificial hard habitats with different ages and features installed in the Bay of Cherbourg (English Channel): i ) cinder blocks and ii ) boulders, both installed six years prior to the study, and iii ) smooth and iv ) rugous concrete dykes, both installed one year prior to this study. Results showed that artificial habitats installed six years ago harboured communities with functional and taxonomic diversity characteristic of mature communities but were still different from those of natural habitat. Conversely, the two dyke habitats installed one year prior to this study presented a poorly diversified community dominated by opportunistic taxa. Furthermore, while the concrete used for the two dyke habitats presented different rugosity properties, both habitats supported similar communities, suggesting that such eco-engineering measures did not affect the settlement of early colonisers. Overall, this study highlights the need for long-term monitoring to comprehensively evaluate epibenthic colonisation of artificial structures.

Abstract:Transplantations of organisms in aquatic ecosystems play an important role in ecological restoration and commercial practices. However, success rates of these transplantations, especially when ecosystem engineers are involved, are often low. To enhance transplantation success, the promotion of self‐facilitation between transplants that mitigate environmental stressors is crucial. Besides, spatial patterns resulting from self‐facilitation can enhance ecosystem resilience. Using blue mussels as a model organism, we explored the possibility of increasing transplantation success in a subtidal ecosystem. We used biodegradable structures ("BioShell‐SMCs") to ameliorate self‐facilitating feedback mechanisms to overcome environmental stressors in the initial post‐transplantation phase, and to increase transplantation success by implementing large‐scale spatial configurations, mimicking natural mussel bed patterns. The structures are an innovation of traditional seed mussel collectors (SMCs) used in mussel cultivation. They consist of a biodegradable net based on a compound of aliphatic polyesters, filled with empty cockle shells around a coconut fiber rope. We tested whether different spatial configurations could increase transplantation success of mussel seed: low versus high density labyrinth pattern and banded pattern. The results of this experiment showed high losses (approximately 75%), with no significant variation between configurations. The lack of migration due to unexpected retention of the biodegradable net hindered the initiation of natural aggregations, resulting in increased competition among mussels. Besides, factors such as hydrodynamic dislodgement, burial and interannual variation likely contributed to the observed losses. While the BioShell‐SMC has not demonstrated large‐scale success, this research contributes to understanding the mechanisms that underlie successful transplantation strategies in aquatic ecosystems.

Abstract:Ecological rehabilitation of seawalls requires a good understanding of the underlying community structure, which is still poorly known in the tropics where coastal urbanization is rapidly taking place. In this study, we compared intertidal sessile biota on sloping (20°) and vertical (90°) seawalls on a small, reclaimed offshore island in the Singapore Strait and examined the pattern of heterogeneity of sessile assemblages within each seawall type. Cover of sessile organisms, abundance of hard coral species as well as their growth forms across two tidal height ranges in the low littoral region (−0.2 to +0.3 m Chart Datum (CD) and + 0.3 to +0.8 m CD) were assessed. Seawalls had high biotic cover (mean cover of 91 ± 15%), comprising a variety of sessile organisms ranging from algae and non-colonial organisms including oysters and barnacles to colonial organisms such as cnidarians and sponges. Turf algae comprising coralline and non-coralline rhodophytes dominated the intertidal zone below +0.8 m CD. A moderate negative correlation was detected between crustose coralline and non-coralline algae (Spearman coefficient = −0.56). Coralline algae were relatively conspicuous on several vertical seawall sites. Seawall type was a significant factor differentiating sessile cover composition ( p < 0.05) even though within-type site variability was significant ( p < 0.005). Coral species diversity and growth form abundance were also significantly differentiated by seawall type (respectively p < 0.05). Tidal height (+0.3 m CD) was another significant factor for sessile cover composition and growth form abundance ( p < 0.05). In general, sloping seawalls showed higher within-site variability and less obvious tidal stratification of sessile cover composition compared to vertical seawalls. In contrast, vertical seawalls showed lower within-site variability but higher site-to-site variation, as well as significant tidal stratification of coral growth form. These differences in community structure on apparently uniform seawall surfaces suggest the need for nuanced approaches to rehabilitate and enhance biodiversity in the intertidal zone.

Abstract:Maritime built heritage (e.g., historic seawalls) represents an important component of coastal infrastructure around the world. Despite this, the ecological communities supported by these structures are poorly understood. At seven locations across the UK, we compared the biodiversity and physical habitat characteristics of (1) historic (pre-1900s) masonry walls, (2) concrete walls, and (3) natural rocky cliffs. Historic masonry walls were found to support significantly more species than concrete walls, and in some locations, more diverse communities than nearby rocky cliffs. Nevertheless, community composition remained distinct between the three habitat types at each location. We also found that historic masonry walls provided substantially more cryptic space (i.e., crevices) than both concrete walls and rocky cliffs, and this is positively associated with the ecological value of these structures. Overall, our results suggest that the unique physical properties of historic masonry walls make them an important component of habitat diversity along developed coastlines.
Dramatic Enhancement of Macrozoobenthic Species β-Diversity in Response to Artificial Breakwater Construction Along a Tropical Coastline

Abstract:The beneficial or detrimental effects of human-built marine structures (piers, breakwaters, and seawalls) on macrozoobenthic assemblages and diversities are currently underexplored. The present study investigated the enhancement of β-diversity of oysterbed-associated species on breakwaters constructed along sandy beaches. We compared habitat complexities and species assemblages among artificial breakwater shores (ABS), a natural rocky shore (NS), and an embayment shore (ES). Oysterbed habitat complexity was found to be greatest on the ABS due to the successional colonization of the reef-forming estuarine oyster, Saccostrea echinata, followed by the colonization of boring bivalves and burrowing annelids. High-resolution taxonomic data revealed that the ABS supports the greatest species richness, including 48.1% unique species and 33.3% species shared with the embayment shore. The other shores uniquely or in combination with ABS support up to 11.1% of the total species richness associated with the oysterbeds (n = 81). Taxonomic dominance in terms of species number was Mollusca > Annelida > Arthropoda. This study reveals that ABS enhances β-diversity by ~91% (Jaccard dissimilarity index), which is driven by the sequential cascading events of (1) sheltering of shores, (2) colonization of novel habitat-forming oysters, (3) novel macrozoobenthic species recruitment from adjacent shores and sheltered embayments, including habitat-forming bivalves and annelids, and (4) the recruitment of macrozoobenthic species to boreholes. ABS habitat complexity derives from a spatially distinct, three-tiered ecological engineering system, involving (1) breakwater construction (100 m), (2) reef-forming oysters (10 m), and (3) boring bivalves and burrowing annelids (<10 cm). Irrespective of the purpose of their construction, breakwaters along extended sandy shores can potentially increase the resilience (β-diversity) and regional interconnectivity of hard surface macrozoobenthic species.

Abstract:Stakeholder support is critical to the success of ecological restoration projects, and consultation with multiple user groups is increasingly a requirement of permitting agencies. Despite this, participatory mapping remains a “missing layer” in spatial planning of restoration projects. We used site selection for oyster reef restoration in Sydney Harbour as a case study to assess how GIS-based habitat suitability modelling might be adapted to consider not only biophysical data and conflicting estuarine use, but also stakeholder support and engagement. Specifically, we compared the outcomes of suitability modelling that; (1) considered only biophysical parameters that influence habitat suitability for native oyster species; (2) included conflicting estuarine uses to negate social conflict, and habitat connectivity to promote ecological synergies; and (3) incorporated stakeholder perspectives through the integration of participatory mapping. Models that only applied biophysical parameters indicated 43–93% (depending on native oyster species) of Sydney Harbour would be more than moderately suitable for native oyster reef restoration. When conflicting estuarine uses and habitat connectivity were included, this value fell to 11% across native oysters. The inclusion of stakeholder perspectives further reduced suitability to 7%. Our study showed that selecting sites for ecological restoration based solely on biophysical suitability for the target species potentially overestimates the area suitable for restoration and therefore increases the probability of project failure, particularly in sites where stakeholders are not as supportive as anticipated. This study demonstrates how traditional habitat suitability modelling can be enhanced through the inclusion of additional data on human activities and stakeholder support. Importantly, it provides a template by which stakeholders can be engaged early in the restoration project planning process and inspire local communities to play a more active role in restoration activities.

Abstract:A vacuum-voltmeter (VVM) was fielded on the Saturn pulsed power generator during a series of argon gas-puff Z-pinch shots. Time-resolved voltage and separately measured load current are used to determine several dynamic properties as the load implodes, namely, the inductance, L(t), net energy coupled to the load, E(coupled)(t), and the load radius, r(t). The VVM is a two-stage voltage divider, designed to operate at voltages up to 2 MV. The VVM is presently being modified to operate at voltages up to 6 MV for eventual use on the Z generator.

Abstract:Intertidal rocky shores are the most accessible marine habitats and therefore heavily impacted by harvesting. In recent years, they have also been increasingly invaded by alien species, which compounds the effects of harvesting on rocky shore community composition and functioning. Recent survey data, combined with historical data from 1970, were used to assess temporal changes over the intervening period in rocky shore communities at two sites (Wireless Point and Wireless Island). Three kinds of changes emerged: (1) the appearance of alien species; (2) the effects of increased harvesting pressure; and (3) the direct and indirect effects of these changes on other species. A striking result was transformation of mid-shore zones on exposed shores by the appearance of the invasive Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis , and the indirect effects of this on the demography and vertical zonation patterns of the granular limpet Scutellastra granularis . Adult limpets have become excluded by the mussel, whereas juveniles find a secondary home on the shells of the mussel and their abundance has increased. To further disentangle the effects of harvesting from those of alien invasions, a spatial comparison was made between two currently unharvested no-take sites (Scarborough South and Scarborough North) and two regularly harvested sites (Kommetjie and Wireless Point). Harvesting has substantially depleted the granite limpet Cymbula granatina and Argenville’s limpet Scutellastra argenvillei . This has led to the proliferation of opportunistic seaweeds, such as Ulva spp. The dual effects of alien invasive species and over-harvesting have major ecosystem effects but do not necessarily diminish biodiversity because the alternative habitats that have developed provide opportunities for colonisation by additional species.
