Abstract:Solution processing techniques are often used to enhance intra and interchain order in semiconducting conjugated polymer thin films used in the active layer of organic optoelectronic devices. While there has been extensive research into the impact of solution processing on the local structural and electronic properties of these films, the nanomechanical properties of the films are less well understood and are challenging to characterize. We investigate the nanomechanical properties of conjugated polymer thin films arising from solution processing techniques. Our study relies on dynamic secondary solvent dripping to induce subtle changes to the film morphology. We examine thin films of P3HT, PCDTBT, PTB7, and PBDB-T-SF conjugated polymers, commonly used in organic photovoltaics, with the bimodal amplitude-frequency-modulation (AM-FM) imaging mode of atomic force microscopy (AFM) viscoelastic method to probe their local physical and mechanical properties. We find that Young's Modulus data measured by AM-FM AFM can detect additional changes in film properties not detectable by other commonly used characterization techniques (UV–visible absorption spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, nanoindentation). We detected an increase in molecular order for PBDB-T-SF that is not detected by UV–visible absorption spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction or nanoindentation. PCDTBT, the most amorphous of the polymers studied, showed no changes in absorption or X-ray diffraction data, yet clear changes in Young's Modulus were detected by AFM. On the other hand, increases in P3HT order that occurred due to dynamic secondary solvent dripping are detected in both the bulk and AFM measurements. Our study demonstrates the applicability of nanomechanical measurements for characterizing local structural variations in conjugated polymer films. This work is relevant to ongoing efforts to control and understand the complex structure-property-processing relationships of conjugated polymers thin films.

Abstract:The thin film morphology of a conjugated polymer is one of the important factors in determining its electrical performance, which is controlled by thermodynamic and kinetic factors. However, attaining a clear solution processing window for film preparation remains challenging due to the intrinsic complex properties of polymers and solvents. Herein, we proposed a strategy to obtain a uniform fibrous morphology by direct formation of conjugated polymer films on a substrate without an intermediate wetting layer via controlling solvent evaporation. We chose a poly{[ N , N ′-bis(2-octyldodecyl)-naphthalene-1,4,5,8-bis(dicarboximide)-2,6-diyl]- alt -5,5′-(2,2′-bithiophene)} [ P(NDI2OD-T2) ] solution as the model system. The intermediate wetting layer vanishes during the spin-coating deposition when the solvent evaporation speed is greater than 130–140 μm s −1 achieved by increasing the substrate temperature. At this point, in the time-resolved in situ photoluminescence (PL) spectra of P(NDI2OD-T2) , an intermediate transition state of the 0–1 peak appears at 756 nm in addition to the 0–0 peak at 834 nm. This indicates that the polymer chains are rearranged to form homogeneous fibers without detrimental aggregation. Compared to the film formed with an intermediate wetting layer, some large aggregates can be observed. Thus, the electron mobility reaches 0.33 ± 0.02 cm 2 V −1 s −1 for the film without the intermediate wetting layer, which is 3 times higher than that of the film formed with the wetting layer. The relationship between the deposition regimes, microstructure and charge carrier mobility was also revealed in other solvents, which can serve as generalized guidelines for conjugated polymer film deposition.

Abstract:Molecular orientations of the crystalline and the amorphous phases are studied in relation to morphology using all instrument constructed for simultaneous kinetic measurement of microscopic infrared (MicIR) dichroism from a predetermined sampling area and macroscopic stress of isotactic polypropylene (W) thin film uniaxially stretched at a constant strain rate at room temperature. The morphology imposes important influences oil profiles of MicIR dichroism as a function of stretching, time and also on a relationship between the orientation functions, f(c) and f(am), of the crystalline and the amorphous phases. Linear relationships between f(c) and f(am) are found for the local areas without giant spherulite inclusions when f(am) <0.3 similar to 0.4, suggesting the harmonious developments of amorphous chain deformation and lamellar ant orientation during the necking propagation. The proportionality constant between and f(c) and f(am) is not universal but is strongly dependent on the morphology of the surrounding area where the local area under examination is located. The linear relationship between f(c) and f(am) is completely invalidated for describing the relationship between the amorphous chain deformation and the lamellar orientation inside the spherulites, which reveals that the deformation mechanism in the spherulite is different from that in the microcrystalline region.
Real‐Time Probing and Unraveling the Morphology Formation of Blade‐Coated Ternary Nonfullerene Organic Photovoltaics with In Situ X‐Ray Scattering

Abstract:The multi‐length scale morphology and morphology evolution of a high‐efficiency ternary polymer:nonfullerene blend under different blade coating conditions is probed in real‐time with in situ synchrotron X‐ray scattering and in situ ultraviolet‐visible spectroscopy. The relationship between film morphology and film formation kinetics is understood in‐depth. This study helps understand morphology formation and provides guidance for morphology optimization of organic electronics. Characterizing the bulk heterojunction (BHJ) morphology of the active layer is essential for optimizing blade‐coated organic solar cells (OSCs). Here, the morphology evolution of a highly efficient ternary polymer:nonfullerene blend PM6:N3:N2200 under different blade coating conditions is probed in real‐time by in situ synchrotron X‐ray scattering and in situ ultraviolet‐visible (UV‐vis) spectroscopy. Besides, the morphology of blade‐coated blend films at different conditions is detailed by ex situ X‐ray scattering and microscopic imaging. The ternary blend film exhibited optimized morphology, such as superior molecular stacking structure and appropriate phase separation structure, and boosted photovoltaic performance of the binary blend, as adding a second polymer component to the host polymer:nonfullerene system can balance nucleation and crystallization of polymers and small molecules, facilitating molecular rearrangement to perfect crystallization. Both binary and ternary blends obtained optimized morphology and photovoltaic properties at medium coating speed, mainly attributed to the movement of the polymer and small molecules at the long crystallization and aggregation stage. These findings help understand morphology formation under film drying and provide guidance for optimizing the morphology in blade‐coated OSCs.

Abstract:Electrospray (ES) has emerged as an attractive approach to fabricate thin-film organic photovoltaic devices. However, the morphological properties and their implication to electrical characteristics of polymer:fullerene blends deposited by this method have not been clearly understood yet. In order to uncover the interplay of nanoscale morphology and electrical properties of ES-deposited films, both the residues of single droplets and thin films from the overlapping of multiple droplets were investigated by various characterization techniques. The surface morphology was demonstrated in details by the optical microscope (OM) and atom force microscope (AFM). The ordering structures and aggregation of the polymer were identified by the Raman and UV–vis spectroscopic investigations. The spatially distribution map of the P3HT aggregation states was analyzed by fitting the C˭C mode of P3HT with Lorentzian functions. The conductive atomic force microscopy (C-AFM) was used to quantify local currents and reveal the correlation between the nanostructure and charge-transport mobility. Both surface morphology and aggregation of the P3HT were found to strongly depend on the overlapping boundaries formed by the dry residues of individual droplets. More P3HT aggregation present at the boundaries. However, boundaries also show significantly higher charge-transport resistance thus lower current. Thin films deposited with less droplet evaporation exhibit more homogenous morphology, more uniform phase segregation, and consequently higher charge mobility.

Abstract:The glass transition temperature (T-g) of conjugated polymers is a crucial physical parameter that governs their mechanical and electrical properties for applications from sensor technology to skin-like electronics. Despite some well-developed methods that exist for detecting T-g of conjugated polymers, there is still a need for the combination of advanced calorimetric methodologies to characterize T-g in a broad range of temperatures and scales from bulk to nanometer-thin films. In this work, alternating current (ac) chip calorimetry and flash differential scanning calorimetry (flash DSC) are applied to successfully identify the T(g)s and segmental relaxations of conjugated polymers. The detected relaxations were interpreted, in agreement with existing observations in similar systems, as a side-chain relaxation (low temperature), mobile amorphous fractions (MAF), and rigid amorphous fractions (RAF). T(g)s of MAF and RAF increase and decrease with increasing size of fused thiophene units in the backbone, respectively. The T(g)s of diketopyrrolopyrrole-based conjugated polymer thin films are also identified by the same method, with both T(g)s showing a decreased value compared to those of bulk samples. Furthermore, the weight fractions of MAF and RAF with various film thicknesses are qualitatively analyzed based on the heat capacity step of each amorphous fraction during the glass transition. This facile method gives insights into the physical nature of amorphous phases in conjugated polymers for better revealing their structure-property relationships, which will guide the designs of new materials with optimized electrical and mechanical properties in the future.
In Situ Analysis of Solvent and Additive Effects on Film Morphology Evolution in Spin‐Cast Small‐Molecule and Polymer Photovoltaic Materials

Abstract:To elucidate the details of film morphology/order evolution during spin‐coating, solvent and additive effects are systematically investigated for three representative organic solar cell (OSC) active layer materials using combined in situ grazing incidence wide angle x‐ray scattering (GIWAXS) and optical reflectance. Two archetypical semiconducting donor (p‐type) polymers, P3HT and PTB7, and semiconducting donor small‐molecule, p‐DTS(FBTTh2)2 are studied using three neat solvents (chloroform, chlorobenzene, 1,2‐dichlorobenzene) and four processing additives (1‐chloronaphthalene, diphenyl ether, 1,8‐diiodooctane, and 1,6‐diiodohexane). In situ GIWAXS identifies several trends: 1) for neat solvents, rapid crystallization occurs that risks kinetically locking the material into multiple crystal structures or crystalline orientations; and 2) for solvent + additive processed films, morphology evolution involves sequential transformations on timescales ranging from seconds to hours, with key divergences dependent on additive/semiconductor molecular interactions. When π‐planes dominate the additive/semiconductor interactions, both polymers and small molecule films follow similar evolutions, completing in 1–5 min. When side chains dominate the additive/semiconductor interactions, polymer film maturation times are up to 9 h, while initial crystallization times <10 s are observed for small‐molecule films. This study offers guiding information on OSC donor intermediate morphologies, evolution timescales, and divergent evolutions that can inform OSC manufacture. A detailed in situ grazing incidence wide‐angle X‐ray scattering (GIWAXS) analysis of the spin‐coating of P3HT, PTB7, and p‐DTS(FBTTh2)2 organic photovoltaic films reveals dramatic changes in morphological evolution occurring depending on the solvent and additives used during processing. This work identifies key impacts that the additive/material molecular interactions have on directing between kinetically and thermodynamically driven morphologies.

Abstract:Stepwise photopolymerization is a miraculous strategy modulating the polymer skeleton and electro-optical properties of light modulators based on liquid crystal/polymer composites. However, owing to the indistinct polymerization mechanism and curing condition discrepancy, the required polymer structures and electro-optical properties are hard to be controlled precisely. Herein, a novel polymer-stabilized liquid crystal film based on acrylate/epoxy resin is proposed, fabricated and the relationships between preparation process, polymer content, polymer morphology and electro-optical properties are studied. The in-situ photopolymerization of acrylate/epoxy resin liquid crystalline polymer is fulfilled using cation photo-initiator UV 6976. The distinct photopolymerization speed between acrylate and epoxy resin benefits the polymer morphology control, and with accurate containment of the polymerization process and polymer composition, the superior electro-optical properties at a higher polymer content are acquired. The polymer morphology and electro-optical properties are influenced by the polymer content and mass ratio between acrylate and epoxy resin. The best electro-optical properties among samples are attained by controlling the mass ratio between acrylate and epoxy resin to 1:1, integrating higher densities of scattering centers and lower anchoring effect. With higher polymer content, the strategy of increasing the mass ratio of E6M benefits the improvement of E-O properties for alleviating polymer density. This work provides insights to stepwise polymerization of liquid crystalline monomers and offers a fancy strategy for the preparation of novel liquid crystal dimming films.

Abstract:We have systematically studied the thin film morphologies of symmetric poly(styrene)-block-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PS-b-PMMA) diblock copolymer after annealing to solvents with varying selectivity. Upon neutral solvent vapor annealing, terraced morphology is observed without any lateral structures on the surfaces. When using PS-selective solvent annealing, the film exhibits macroscopically flat with a disordered micellar structure. While PMMA-selective solvent annealing leads to the dewetting of the film with fractal-like holes, with highly ordered nanoscale depressions in the region of undewetted films. In addition, when decreasing the swelling degree of the film in the case of PMMA-selective solvent annealing, hills and valleys are observed with the coexistence of highly ordered nanoscale spheres and stripes on the surface, in contrast to the case of higher swelling degree. The differences are explained qualitatively on the basis of polymer-solvent interaction parameters of the different components.
Improving crystallinity and ordering of PBTTT by inhibiting nematic to smectic phase transition via rapid cooling

Abstract:The liquid crystalline (LC) phase can promote the long-range ordering of conjugated polymer films. Therefore, the effects of different single LC phases and the coexistence of multiple LC phases on film morphology deserve further study. In this work, we found that distinct film morphologies can be obtained by undergoing different LC transition processes. It was demonstrated that Poly(2,5-bis(3-alkylthiophen-2-yl)thieno[3,2-b]thiophene) (PBTTT) undergoes a high-temperature nematic LC I phase and a low-temperature smectic LC II phase by optical images, in-situ UV–vis spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). When the PBTTT is rapidly cooled from the melt to solid thin film at 130 °C/min, the films crystallize from LC I directly and keep the nematic-like texture. When the melt is slowly cooled at 1 °C/min, the films crystallize after transforming from LC I to LC II and retain the smectic-like texture. The former films exhibit 24.5 times higher crystallinity than the latter. Meantime, the lamellar packing d100 distance increases from 21.06 Å to 23.85 Å, and the intercrystallite distance increases from 9 nm to 25 nm, respectively. The restraint chain mobility in the highly ordered smectic phase and the nanoconfinement effect induced by phase separation between LC I and LC II are responsible for the reduced crystalline order in the films experienced by LC I and LC II. This work emphasizes the importance of LC phases and rational annealing programs on morphology design.

Abstract:Anisotropic mobility in spin-coated MEH-PPV films is due to an interfacial layer of several nanometers at the film-substrate interface with a higher electron density assisted by local chain alignment parallel to the substrate. This layer is formed via spin-coating. The strength of this interface effect is dependent on the solvent used.
Non-destructive depth-dependent morphological characterization of ferroelectric:semiconducting polymer blend films

Abstract:Herein, we investigate the technologically relevant blend of the ferroelectric polymer poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-trifluoroethylene), P(VDF-co-TrFE), with the semiconducting polymer poly(3-hexylthiophene), P3HT, by means of a combination of scanning probe microscopy techniques, namely atomic force microscopy, conductive force microscopy, kelvin probe force microscopy, and piezoresponse force microscopy. This combination proves to be a powerful tool for the non-destructive morphological reconstruction of multi-functional nano-structured thin films, as those under study. Each modality allows discerning the two blend constituents based on their functionality, and, additionally, probes layers of different thickness with respect to the film surface. The depth-dependent information that is collected allows a qualitative reconstruction of the blend's composition and morphology both in-plane and out-of-plane of the film. We demonstrate that P3HT exhibits the tendency to reside the film surface at an almost constant composition of 15%, independent of blend's composition. Increasing the P3HT content in the blend results in the segregation of P3HT at the upper layers of the films, partially buried below a P(VDF-co-TrFE) superficial layer. The depletion of P3HT from the substrate/film interface is reflected by the poor existence of conducting pathways that connect the top and bottom planes of the film. The three-dimensional morphology of this polymer blend that is revealed thanks to the employed techniques deviates substantially from the ideal morphology proposed for the efficient performance of the targeted memory devices.

Abstract:An important step of the great achievement of organic solar cells in power conversion efficiency is the development of low-band gap polymer donors, PBDB−T derivatives, which present interesting aggregation effects dominating the device performance. The aggregation of polymers can be manipulated by a series of variables from a materials design and processing conditions perspective; however, optimization of film quality is a time- and energy-consuming work. Here, we introduce a robot-based high-throughput platform (HTP) that is offering automated film preparation and optical spectroscopy thin-film characterization in combination with an analysis algorithm. PM6 films are prepared by the so-called spontaneous film spreading (SFS) process, where a polymer solution is coated on a water surface. Automated acquisition of UV/Vis and photoluminescence (PL) spectra and automated extraction of morphological features is coupled to Gaussian Process Regression to exploit available experimental evidence for morphology optimization but also for hypothesis formulation and testing with respect to the underlying physical principles. The integrated spectral modeling workflow yields quantitative microstructure information by distinguishing amorphous from ordered phases and assesses the extension of amorphous versus the ordered domains. This research provides an easy to use methodology to analyze the exciton coherence length in conjugated semiconductors and will allow to optimize exciton splitting in thin film organic semiconductor layers as a function of processing.

Abstract:The influences of solvent evaporation, loading metal salts, and concentration on drop–cast diblock copolymer templates adjusted by changing solution composition and temperature are investigated via X–ray scattering at subsequent positions throughout a film as a foundation for sensor fabrication. Heating plays an important role in the film consisting of crystallizable blocks, enlarging the parameter window for the diblock copolymer template. Morphology templates of solution–based diblock copolymer (DBC) films with loading metal salts are widely applied in photocatalysts, photovoltaics, and sensors due to their adjustable characteristics based on surface (de–)wetting and microphase separation. The present work investigates the morphologies of drop–cast hybrid films based on poly(styrene)–b–poly(ethylene oxide) (PS–b–PEO) and the metal salts titanium isopropoxide (TTIP) and zinc acetate dehydrate (ZAD) in comparison to the pure DBC. By utilizing scanning electron microscopy, grazing–incidence small– and wide–angle X‐ray scattering, and differential scanning calorimetry, we find that the resulting film morphologies depend not only on the presence of metal salts but also on solvent evaporation and crystalline formation. At 20 °C, additional TTIP and ZAD in the polymer template cause the morphology to change from packed globular structures to separated wormlike structures attributed to the changed polymer environment. Furthermore, additional tetrahydrofuran causes irregular structures at the precursor film part and the overlapped wormlike structures to transition into close–packed globular structures at the cap film parts of the pure DBC. In contrast, at 50 °C, the globular structures transit to fingerprint patterns due to the thermal behavior of the crystallizable PEO blocks, and the metal salt additives suppress crystalline structure formation in the PEO domains.

Understanding the crystallization process of a diketopyrrolopyrrole‐based conjugated polymer in blend films

Abstract:The film morphology of fullerene and diketopyrrolopyrrole-based conjugated polymers (PDPPs) blends largely influences the device performance in organic solar cells. It is critical to control the morphology of blend films, which usually requires investigations of the crystallization of PDPP-based thin films. Here, we study the influence of marginal solvent additive 1,2-dichlorobenzene (ODCB) and non-solvent additive 1,8-diiodooctane (DIO) on the crystallization of poly[2,5-bis(2-octyldodecyl)pyrrolo-[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,4(2H,5H)-dione-alt-2,2′: 5′,2″: 5″,2″′-quaterthiophene] (PDQT). The blends formed fibril structures in thin films, as revealed by transmission electron microscopy. The fibril density increased and the width decreased with the ODCB amount. The critical ODCB content to achieve constant fibril width is almost proportional to the concentration of PDQT. Higher ODCB content also results in higher fibril density in pure PDQT films. In contrast, the amount of DIO has a negligible influence on the fibril width and density of thin films. Moreover, novel dendritic fibrils were formed in PDQT films upon addition of ODCB. A model based on nucleation and growth is proposed to explain these findings. The heterogeneous nucleation was dominant with the presence of ODCB, while the homogeneous nucleation was prevailing when DIO was used. The results show that initial nucleation density and growth direction are key factors determining the fibril width.

Abstract:A deep understanding of the factors influencing the morphology of thin films based on conjugated polymers is essential to boost their performance in optoelectronic devices. Herein, we investigated the electronic structure and morphology of thin films of the copolymer poly(9,9-dioctyl-fluorenyl- co -bithiophene) (F8T2) in its pristine form as well as samples processed with the solvent additive 1,8-diiodooctane (DIO) or post-processed through thermal annealing treatment. Measurements were carried out using angle-resolved S K-edge NEXAFS (near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure) in total electron yield (TEY) and fluorescence yield (FY) detection modes. Two main transitions were observed at the S 1s NEXAFS spectra: S 1s → π* and S 1s → σ* (S–C). The observed dichroism pointed to a face-on orientation of the conjugated backbone, which was significantly increased for F8T2 films processed with DIO. Resonant Auger decay spectra were obtained and analyzed using the core-hole clock (CHC) method. An enhancement in the charge transfer process was observed for thermally annealed films, especially for samples processed with DIO, corresponding to an increase in film ordering. Furthermore, the investigated films were characterized using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, attesting to the presence of the thiophene unit in the samples and demonstrating that some of its sulfur atoms were positively polarized in the F8T2 films. All these experimental findings were compared with molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of film evaporation with and without DIO. The use of MD, together with mathematical modeling, was able to explain the major effects found in the experiments, including the polarization of sulfur atoms. The simultaneous use of powerful spectroscopic techniques and theoretical methods shed light on key aspects linking film morphology with fabrication procedures.

Abstract:Oxidative chemical vapor deposition (oCVD) has emerged as one of the most promising techniques for conjugated polymer deposition, especially for unsubstituted polythiophene thin films. oCVD overcomes the insolubility challenge that unsubstituted polythiophene (PT) presents and adds the ability to control morphological and molecular structure. This control is important for enhancing the performance of devices which incorporate organic conductors. In this work, Raman spectroscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, and AFM reveal that the relative amount of distortion in the polymer chains, the conjugation length and the film roughness are all affected by the CVD deposition conditions, in particular the reactor pressure. PT films deposited at 150 mT and 300 mT are found to have lower chain distortion, longer conjugation lengths and lower surface roughness compared to other deposition pressures. The oCVD PT film is also directly grafted to the trichloro(phenylethyl)silane (PTS) treated substrates, where the effect of PTS grafting is observed to significantly affect film roughness. In addition, we report the first study of the effect of oCVD PT films on the performance of lithium-ion battery electrodes. These oCVD PT films are used to engineer a LiCoO 2 cathode in lithium-ion batteries. The observed improvements are a 52% increase in the discharge capacity (67 mA h g −1 to 102 mA h g −1 ) at 10C and a 500% improvement in cycling stability tested at 5C within the voltage range of 3.0–4.5 V (capacity fading rate is reduced from 1.92%/cycle to 0.32%/cycle).

Abstract:We have followed the time development of the microdomain structure in symmetric diblock copolymer poly(styrene-b-methyl methacrylate), P(S-b-MMA), ultrathin films via PMMA-selective solvent vapor treatment by atomic force microscopy (AFM). After preparation on a substrate preferentially attracting the PMMA block, PS forms a continuous layer at a film's free surface. With subsequent solvent vapor treatment, the film gradually shows a well-ordered hexagonally packed nanocylinders structure. It is shown that only when the film thickness is less than the 1/2L(0) (lamellar repeat spacing), and exposed to PMMA block selective solvent for an appropriate time, can the well-ordered hexagonally packed nanocylinders form. On an extended solvent vapor treatment, a mixed morphology containing nanocylinders and stripes appears, followed by the striped morphologies. When the annealing time is long enough, the film comes back to the flat surface again, however, with PMMA instead of PS dominating the free surface. Thickness confinement and solvent induced reconstruction of the film are shown to be responsible for the P(S-b-MMA) morphology and surface chemistry development.

Abstract:Understanding crystal polymorphism is a long-standing challenge relevant to many fields, such as pharmaceuticals, organic semiconductors, pigments, food, and explosives. Controlling polymorphism of organic semiconductors (OSCs) in thin films is particularly important given that such films form the active layer in most organic electronics devices and that dramatic changes in the electronic properties can be induced even by small changes in the molecular packing. However, there are very few polymorphic OSCs for which the structure-property relationships have been elucidated so far. The major challenges lie in the transient nature of metastable forms and the preparation of phase-pure, highly crystalline thin films for resolving the crystal structures and evaluating the charge transport properties. Here we demonstrate that the nanoconfinement effect combined with the flow-enhanced crystal engineering technique is a powerful and likely material-agnostic method to identify existing polymorphs in OSC materials and to prepare the individual pure forms in thin films at ambient conditions. With this method we prepared high quality crystal polymorphs and resolved crystal structures of 6,13-bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl)pentacene (TIPS-pentacene), including a new polymorph discovered via in situ grazing incidence X-ray diffraction and confirmed by molecular mechanic simulations. We further correlated molecular packing with charge transport properties using quantum chemical calculations and charge carrier mobility measurements. In addition, we applied our methodology to a [1]benzothieno[3,2-b][1]1benzothiophene (BTBT) derivative and successfully stabilized its metastable form.
