Abstract:Organic photovoltaic efficiency though currently limited for practical applications, can be improved by means of various molecular‐level modifications. Herein the role of extended donor π‐conjugation through ethynyl‐bridged meso‐phenyl/pyridyl on the photoinduced charge‐transfer kinetics is studied in noncovalently bound Zn‐Porphyrin and carbon‐fullerene based donor‐acceptor complex using time‐dependent optimally tuned range‐separated hybrid combined with the kinetic rate theory in polar solvent. Non‐covalent dispersive interaction is identified to primarily govern the complex stability. Ethynyl‐extended π‐conjugation results in red‐shifted donor‐localized Q‐band with substantially increased dipole oscillator strength and smaller exciton binding energy, suggesting greater light‐harvesting efficiency. However, the low‐lying charge‐transfer state below to the Q‐band is relatively less affected by the ethynyl‐extended π‐conjugation, yielding reduced driving forces for the charge‐transfer. Detailed kinetics analysis reveals similar order of charge‐transfer rate constants (~1012 s‐1) for all donor‐acceptor composites studied. Importantly, enhanced light‐absorption, smaller exciton binding energy and similar charge‐transfer rates together with reduced charge‐recombination make these complexes suitable for efficient photoinduced charge‐separation. These findings will be helpful to molecularly design the advanced organic donor‐acceptor blends for energy efficient photovoltaic applications.

Abstract:The 1D array of electron donor–acceptor chromophoric organic molecules is of paramount importance for photovoltaic, catalytic and optoelectronic applications. Herein, we report coordination driven 1D arrays of an electron-donor guest (fluorene, carbazole, dibenzofuran, and dibenzothiophene) and o -phen chelator as an acceptor in a Zn-based porous coordination polymer, {[Zn( o -phen)(ndc)]·DMF} (PCP-1). All the guest-encapsulated PCPs were characterized by performing single-crystal structure determinations and showed emission driven by charge transfer. Exciton binding energies were calculated and correlated with electron-donating capabiliities of the guest molecules.

Substituent-level Tuning of Frontier Orbital Energy Levels in Phthalocyanine/C60 Donor-Acceptor Charge Transfer Pairs

Abstract:We have calculated several low-lying Charge Transfer (CT) excited-state energies for four non-covalently bound dyads composed of a sulfonated-ZnPc coupled to C60. Our results show that the di- and tri-sulfonated systems yield a CT state as the lowest-energy excited state in the system. In contrast, an energy re-ordering for the tetra-sulfonated ZnPc system leads to local excitations lying lower in energy than the CT state, displaying a possible deactivation pathway obstructing charge separation. Since several different donor-acceptor relative orientations may co-exist at an organic heterojunction, we compare the energetics of a few low-lying CT states for the end-on geometry of a di-sulfonated system to its co-facial orientation counterpart. The calculated CT excitation energies are larger for the end-on orientation in comparison to the co-facial structure by ~1.5 eV, which results principally from a substantial decrease in exciton binding energy in going from the co-facial to the end-on orientation. Furthermore, changes in relative donor-acceptor orientation have a larger impact on the CT energies than changes in donor-acceptor distance. TDDFT calculations on the various sulfonated ZnPc donor molecules show a significant splitting of the Q-band for only one of the four donor systems. Our present calculations, in line with previous experimental studies, show that the systematic variation of chemical functional groups is a promising avenue for the substituent-level tuning of various physical properties of organic semiconductors.

Abstract:To improve the efficacy of organic solar cells (OSCs), novel small acceptor molecules (CTD1-CTD7) were designed by modification at the terminal acceptors of reference compound CTR. The optoelectronic properties of the investigated compounds (CTD1-CTD7) were accomplished by employing density functional theory (DFT) in combination with time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT). The M06 functional along with a 6-311G(d,p) basis set was utilized for calculating various parameters such as: frontier molecular orbitals (FMO), absorption maxima (λmax), binding energy (Eb), transition density matrix (TDM), density of states (DOS), and open circuit voltage (Voc) of entitled chromophores. A red shift in the absorption spectra of all designed chromophores (CTD1-CTD7) was observed as compared to CTR, accompanied by low excitation energy. Particularly, CTD4 was characterized by the highest λmax value of 685.791 nm and the lowest transition energy value of 1.801 eV which might be ascribed to the robust electron-withdrawing end-capped acceptor group. The observed reduced binding energy (Eb) was linked to an elevated rate of exciton dissociation and substantial charge transfer from central core in HOMO towards terminal acceptors in LUMO. These results were further supported by the outcomes from TDM and DOS analyses. Among all entitled chromophores, CTD4 exhibited bathochromic shift (685.791 nm), minimum HOMO/LUMO band gap of 2.347 eV with greater CT. Thus, it can be concluded that by employing molecular engineering with efficient acceptor moieties, the efficiency of photovoltaic materials could be improved.

Abstract:Modulating charge transfer (CT) interactions between donor and acceptor molecules may give rise to unique dynamic changes in physicochemical properties, exhibiting great importance in supramolecular chemistry and materials science. In this work, we demonstrate the first instance of reversible photomodulation of donor-acceptor (D-A) CT interaction in the solid state.Pyridinium-based chromophore featuring π-conjugated D-A structures can not only function as a good electron acceptor to undergo photoinduced electron transfer (ET) or engage in intermolecular CT interaction, but also exhibit unique dual emission depending on the excitation wavelengths. The rotatable C-C single bonds within D-A pairs enhance the tunability of molecular structure. Through the synergy of a photoinduced ET and an excited-state conformational change, the intermolecular CT interaction can be switched on and off by alternate light irradiation to enables reversibly modulation of the affinity between donor and acceptor molecules, accompanied by visual color switching and fluorescence on-off as feedback signals.
Electron Rich Guest Regulated Enhanced CO2 Reduction in a Multivariate Porous Coordination Polymer

Abstract:This study showcases the development of a multivariate porous coordination polymer (PCP) featuring inherent donor–acceptor light‐harvesting antennas. It delves into examining the influence of the electronic properties of donor guests and the redox characteristics of catalytic sites on the performance of photocatalytic CO2 reduction. The need for carbon‐neutralization technologies has prompted significant interest in developing materials for CO2 reduction. Donor–acceptor (D–A) based flexible porous coordination polymers {[Zn(o‐phen)(ndc)].(guest)}n, (guest = anthracene = 1‐Ant, and pyrene = 1‐Pyr) are reported as photocatalysts for CO2RR, yielding higher order CH4 product. Electron‐rich anthracene (Ant) and pyrene (Pyr) guests are confined within nanopores, forming D–A charge transfer (CT) complexes with o‐phen ligand of the host. CT interaction enhances visible light absorption and modulates excitonic properties of the photocatalyst by electronic push‐pull effect (exciton binding energy 87 meV for 1‐Ant and 104 meV for 1‐Pyr). Electron donation capability varies from Pyr to Ant, affecting catalytic properties; 1‐Ant yields 1.24 mmolg−1 of CH4 (0.47 mmolg−1 for 1‐Pyr) with CO as minor product. A mixed‐metal multivariate PCP {[Zn0.55Co0.45(o‐phen)(ndc)].(Ant)}n, (1′‐Ant) prepared based on solid‐solution approach by substituting Zn(II) with redox‐active Co(II) enhances CH4 production (2.79 mmolg−1, ≈94% selectivity). D–A CT complex harvests visible light and channels electrons to Co(II) for CO2RR. In situ DRIFTS and theoretical studies elucidate Co(II) site's role in CO2 binding and stabilizing reaction intermediates. This work underscores guest‐modulated electron transfer in PCPs for tailoring catalytic properties by introducing a redox‐active metal in a multivariate approach.

Abstract:Here, five new donor- -acceptor- -donor (D- -A- -D) type conjugated acceptors have been designed by incorporating quinacridone as the donor unit, thiophene as the common -bridging unit, and five central acceptor units. To investigate the influence of various central acceptor units on the geometric, electrical, optical, charge transport and photovoltaic properties of the designed acceptor molecules, density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) methods have been employed. The findings (frontier molecular orbital analysis and various key parameters viz. bond length alteration parameter, charge transfer rate, power conversion efficiency etc.) affirm that increasing the electron-withdrawing nature of the central acceptor units improve the performance of the designed acceptor molecules. The observed reorganization energy ( ) values infer the electron accepting nature of the investigated compounds. Moreover, the absorption properties manifest that compounds C2 and C4 have the highest values. The properties of the D/A blends also suggest that complexes A1/C2 and A1/C4 can facilitate charge carrier separation at the D/A active layer. Furthermore, the photovoltaic performance of the D/A complexes also reveal that complex A1/C2, with a theoretical PCE of 30.33\%, can be considered as the most promising candidate for application in OSCs.

Abstract:Miscibility and morphology of the active layers have significant influence on the photovoltaic performance of polymer solar cells (PSCs). Chemical strategies, especially molecular structure design, have been proven to be crucial for polymer donor materials. In this work, two wide bandgap D-A copolymer donors composed of tripropylsilyl substituted bithienyl-benzodithiophene as donor (D) unit and dialkyl substituted bithiazole as acceptor (A) unit were designed and synthesized. By introducing thiophene π-bridges into the backbone, the miscibility and morphological properties of the materials are effectively tuned, leading to tremendous progress in power conversion efficiency from 0.95% to 10.73% with m-ITIC as the acceptor. The results demonstrate that manipulating molecular distortion can be an effective strategy to regulate molecular self-assembly behavior of the polymer donors and achieve excellent aggregation properties, blend miscibility, and photovoltaic performance of the PSCs.

An efficient end-capped engineering of pyrrole-based acceptor molecules for high-performance organic solar cells

Abstract:Context: Various innovative molecules have been designed and explored for use in organic photovoltaics. In this study, we devised novel molecules (KZ1-KZ7) specifically for organic solar cells (OSCs). The newly formulated acceptor compounds possess a lower bandgap (Eg = 1.85-2.02), along with bathochromic shift (λmax = 713-788 nm) compared to the reference (Eg = 2.04 eV and λmax = 774 nm). Moreover, the FMO results identified the distinct charge transfer from HOMO to LUMO, which was strongly corroborated by the TDM maps. Similarly, the new designed molecules show less excitation energy (Ex = 1.31-1.54(gas)) than reference (Ex = 1.72). Likewise, all designed molecules (KZ1-KZ7) have demonstrated an analogous open circuit voltage (Voc) with the donor polymer PTB7-Th. All seven designed molecules (KZ1-KZ7) exhibited more fill factor ranging from 97.08 to 97.29 than reference 95.25 and PCE of between 8 and 20% at short circuit current densities of 9, 12, and 15 mA cm-2. Overall, the findings support that designed molecules can be potential molecules for future practical applications. Methods: Geometric calculations were conducted with Gaussian 09W software, and the findings were visualized using Gauss View software. DFT and TD-DFT were employed to evaluate various parameters for R and designed molecules (KZ1-KZ7). Firstly, four functionals including B3LYP, CAM-B3LYP, MPW1PW91, and ωB97XD with 6-31G(d,p) DFT level were applied to R to decide the best level for results. After appropriate analysis, the MPW1PW91/6-31G(d,p) was selected for further examination by comparing the experimental and DFT-based absorption graphs of R. External and internal reorganization energy are the two main factors contributing to reorganization energy. External energy refers to changes in external environment, while internal energy deals with information related to internal geometrical symmetry or the internal environment. The effect of outside factors or external reorganizational energy is omitted because it creates too little change.

Abstract:It is well reported that the fused ring acceptor modification can be an effective method for improving the optoelectronic and photovoltaic properties of organic materials. The addition of acceptor groups to a core can enhance its electron-withdrawing ability, resulting in improved charge transport and higher power conversion efficiencies in organic solar cells (OSCs). Thieno[3,2- b ]thiophene, and diketopyrrolopyrrole are commonly used groups in OSCs due to their powerful electron-withdrawing capabilities and well-established synthetic protocols. Their incorporation into donor–acceptor systems has been shown to enhance the materials absorption spectra, increase the open-circuit voltage (V OC ), and improve device performance. Following integrating several acceptor groups onto the recently synthesized core based on thieno[3,2- b ]thiophene, and diketopyrrolopyrrole, we have created six novel electron donors (BDPTM1-BDPTM6) with interesting optoelectronic and photovoltaic properties. It is indeed common practice to use computational methods such as density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) to investigate the optoelectronic and photovoltaic properties of newly created molecules. These methods allow researchers to obtain crucial parameters such as the HOMO and LUMO energies, energy gap (E gap ), frontier molecular orbital alignment, density of states, molecular electrostatic potential, absorption maxima (λ max ), excitation energy (E ex ), binding energy and transition density matrix...... Among all the designed compounds, BDPTM3 exhibited the lowest energy bandgap (1.63 eV) with bathochromic shift of 921.610 nm in Dichloro-methane and 852.242 nm in gaseous phase. BDPTM2 displayed the highest dipole moment (μ tot ) at 7.557 eV, BDPTM5, and BDPTM6 demonstrated consistent linear polarizability〈α〉 at 191.612 × 10 −22 esu and 196.2823 × 10 −22 esu respectively. Notably, BDPTM6 calculated the highest frst hyperpolarizability βtot at 583.849 × 10 –30 . Based on the results obtained from the theoretical investigation of the optoelectronic and photovoltaic properties of the developed molecules, it may be possible to recommend them as better candidates for use in organic solar cells (OSCs).

Influence of azacycle donor moieties on the photovoltaic properties of benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole based organic systems: a DFT study

Abstract:Fullerene free organic chromophores are widely utilized to improve the efficacy of photovoltaic materials. Herein, we designed D-π-A-π-D form chromophores (TAZD1-TAZD5) via end-capped redistribution of donor moieties by keeping the same π-bridge and central acceptor unit for organic solar cells (OSCs). To analyze the photovoltaic characteristics of these derivatives, DFT estimations were accomplished at B3LYP/6-311 G (d,p) functional. Different investigations like frontier molecular orbital (FMO), absorption spectra (UV-Vis), density of states (DOS), binding energy (Eb), open circuit voltage (Voc), and transition density matrix (TDMs) were performed to examine the optical, photophysical and electronic characteristics of afore-mentioned chromophores. A suitable band gap (∆E = 2.723-2.659 eV) with larger bathochromic shift (λmax = 554.218-543.261 nm in acetonitrile) was seen in TAZD1-TAZD5. An effective charge transference from donor to acceptor via spacer was observed by FMO analysis which further supported by DOS and TDM. Further, lower binding energy values also supported the higher exciton dissociation and greater CT in TAZD1-TAZD5. Among all the designed chromophores, TAZD5 exhibited the narrowest Egap (2.659 eV) and maximum red-shifted absorption in solvent as well as gas phase i.e. 554.218 nm and 533.219 nm, respectively which perhaps as a result of the phenothiazine-based donor group (MPT). In a nutshell, all the tailored chromophores can be considered as efficient compounds for promising OSCs with a good Voc response, interestingly, TAZD5 is found to be excellent chromophores as compared to all these designed compounds.
Excitation Dynamics in Low Band Gap Donor-Acceptor Copolymers and Blends

Abstract:Donor-acceptor (D-A) type copolymers show great potential for the application in the active layer of organic solar cells. Nevertheless the nature of the excited states, the coupling mechanism and the relaxation pathways following photoexcitation are yet to be clarified. We carried out comparative measurements of the steady state absorption and photoluminescence (PL) on the copolymer poly[N-(1-octylnonyl)-2,7-carbazole] -alt-5,5-[4',7' -di(thien-2-yl)-2',1',3' -benzothiadiazole] (PCDTBT), its building blocks as well as on the newly synthesized N-(1-octylnonyl)-2,7-bis-[(5-phenyl)thien-2-yl)carbazole (BPT-carbazole) (see Figure 1). The high-energy absorption band (HEB) of PCDTBT was identified with absorption of carbazoles with adjacent thiophene rings while the low-energy band (LEB) originates instead from the charge transfer (CT) state delocalized over the aforementioned unit with adjacent benzothiadiazole group. Photoexcitation of the HEB is followed by internal relaxation prior the radiative decay to the ground state. Adding PC70BM results in the efficient PL quenching within the first 50 ps after excitation. From the PL excitation experiments no evidence for a direct electron transfer from the HEB of PCDTBT towards the fullerene acceptor was found, therefore the internal relaxation mechanisms within PCDTBT can be assumed to precede. Our findings indicate that effective coupling between copolymer building blocks governs the photovoltaic performance of the blends.

Abstract:Non fullerene small acceptor molecules in organic photovoltaics are proven beneficial than the traditional fullerene based acceptors for their fine contribution in organic solar cells. Researchers are constantly doing efforts for designing novel acceptor materials with promising photovoltaic properties. Designing of novel molecules by end-capped modifications is a convenient strategy to obtain high efficiency acceptor molecules for OSCs. Herein, we studied optoelectronic characteristics of five novel acceptor–donor–core–donor–acceptor configured small acceptor molecules (S1–S5) after end-capped modifications of recently synthesized DF-PCIC molecule. Designed molecules S1–S5 consist of 1,4-difluorobenzene (as central core), 4,4-bis(2-ethylhexyl)-2,6-dimethyl-4H-cyclopenta[1,2-b:5,4-b′]dithiophene as donor which directly attached with different end-capped acceptors. The electronic and optical properties of newly designed (S1–S5) molecules are examined and compared with reference molecule with the aid of DFT and TD-DFT. Certain key parameters like frontier molecular orbitals analysis, density of states, dipole moment, binding energy along with transition density matrix, excitation energy, charge mobility, absorption maxima and charge transfer analysis have been performed in order to explore the photo-physical, optoelectronic and photovoltaic properties of designed and reference molecule. Out of newly designed structures, S4 displayed lowest energy band-gap (2.25 eV) with red-shifting in absorption spectrum (λmax = 712.43 nm) in chloroform which disclosed the perfect relationship between end-capped acceptor with large electron withdrawing character through extended conjugation. Similarly, S1 exhibited highest value (1.53 V) of open circuit voltage (Voc) with respect to PTB7-Th donor material owing to lower values of λe. Designed molecules exhibit better electron and hole mobility as compared to reference molecule R. All molecules express better absorption maximum, open circuit voltage, low excitation energies, comparable binding energies, large dipole moment and efficient electron and hole transport as compared to reference molecules. So, results these parameters suggest that end-capped modification is a convenient strategy in order to enhance the efficiency of OSCs. Therefore, conceptualized molecules are recommended to experimentalist for out-looking future developments of highly efficient solar cells.

Abstract:Many researchers are engaged nowadays in developing efficient photovoltaic materials to accomplish the demand of modern technology. Nonfullerene small molecular acceptors (NF-SMAs) show potential photovoltaic performance, accelerating the development of organic solar cells (OSCs). Herein, the first theoretical designing of a series of indacenodithiophene-based (-) acceptor chromophores was done by structural tailoring with various well-known acceptors from the recently synthesized molecule. For the selection of the best level of density functional theory (DFT), various functionals such as B3LYP, M06-2X, CAM-B3LYP, and ωB97XD with the 6-311G(d,p) basis set were used for the UV-visible analysis of . Consequently, UV-visible results revealed that an interesting agreement was found between experimental and DFT-based values at the B3LYP level. Therefore, quantum chemical investigations were executed at the B3LYP/6-311G(d,p) level to evaluate the photovoltaic and optoelectronic properties. Structural tailoring with various acceptors resulted in a narrowing of the energy gap (2.245-2.070 eV) with broader absorption spectra (750.919-660.544 nm). An effective transfer of charge toward lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals (LUMOs) from highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMOs) was studied, which played a crucial role in conducting materials. Further, open circuit voltage ( ) analysis was performed with respect to HOMO -LUMO, and all of the derivatives exhibited a comparable value of voltage with that of the parent chromophore. Lower reorganization energies in titled chromophores for holes and electrons were examined, which indicated the higher rate of mobility of charges. Interestingly, all of the designed chromophores exhibited a preferable optoelectronic response compared to the reference molecule. Therefore, this computed framework demonstrates that conceptualized chromophores are preferable and might be used to build high-performance organic solar cells in the future.

Excited state properties of A-D-A non-fullerene electron acceptor: A LC-TD-DFTB study

Abstract:Understanding charge transfer processes is essential to estimate the performance of organic photovoltaic technologies. Although experimental production is on the rise, predictability strongly relies on theoretical modeling, which is limited to the size of semiconductors. As a computationally favorable approach, we benchmarked the Long-range Corrected (LC) Time-Dependent (TD) formulation of the semi-empirical Density Functional-based Tight-Binding method (DFTB) for three Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) and studied the DTP-IC-4Ph molecule, a PAH-based Non-Fullerene Electron Acceptor (NFA) with A-D-A backbone structure. After a thorough investigation into the long-range parameter (ω) tuning for naphthalene, anthracene and pyrene, the excitation energies, oscillator strengths and Natural Transition Orbitals (NTOs) were compared with the standard ωB97X-D/6-31G(d,p) level of theory and the ADC2/6-31G(d,p) multiconfigurational method. We estimated mobility-related properties of the NFA and considered 1000 thermally accessible configurations to qualitatively reproduce the experimental absorption profile and investigate the energetic disorder. Finally, we conducted a fragment-based analysis using the one-electron transition density matrix (1TDM) to determine the character of the excited states and investigate the effect of side chains on exciton formation. Our results are sensitive to the level of theory and highly dependent on the long-range parameter but suggest that the presence of alkyl chains promotes a higher average charge delocalization and allows for additional hopping mechanisms, favoring the charge transfer dynamics.

Abstract:A recently synthesized photoactive donor named fluorinated thienyl–substituted benzodithiophene (DRTB-FT), modified with four novel end capped acceptor molecules, has been investigated through different electrical, quantum, and spectrochemical techniques for its enhanced electro-optical and photovoltaic properties. DRTB-FT was connected to 2-methylenemalononitrile (D-1), 2-methylene-3-oxobutanenitrile (D-2), 2-(2-methylene-3-oxo-2,3-dihydro-1H-inden-1-ylidene) malononitrile (D-3), and 3-methyl-5methylene-2-thioxothiazolidin-4-one (D-4) as terminal acceptor moieties. The architectural D-1 and D-3 molecules owe reduced optical band gap of 2.45 and 2.28 eV benefited from A-D-A configuration and have broaden maximum absorption band (λmax) at 617 and 602 nm in polar organic solvent (chloroform). Reduced optical band gap sets the ease for enhanced absorption. Reorganization energy of electron (λe) of D-3 molecule (0.00397 eV) was smaller among all which disclosed its greater mobility of conducting electrons (ICT). Larger values of dipole moment (μ) of D-1 (5.939 Debye) and D-3 (3.661 Debye) molecules in comparison to R indicated greater solubilities of the targeted molecules. Among the tailored molecules, D-3 showed the lowest binding energy of 0.25 eV in solvent phase and 0.08 eV in gaseous phase. The voltaic strength of the designed molecules was examined with respect to fullerene derivative (PC61BM) which exposed that D-1 is the best choice for achieving higher PCE. TDM (transition density matrix), DOS (density of states) analysis, and binding energies all were estimated at MPW1PW91/6-31G (d, p) level of DFT (density functional theory).

Abstract:This study investigates the electronic properties and conformational dynamics of the ZnP‐COPV‐C60 organic semiconductor using DFT and MD simulations. It reveals insights into charge transfer processes, conformational flexibility, and structural stability. The research demonstrates COPV's ability to maintain rigidity over time and explores the relationship between structural modifications and electronic properties, advancing the design of high‐performance optoelectronic materials. This research explores the electronic properties and conformational dynamics of the ZnP‐COPV‐C60 (Zinc Porphyrin ‐ Carbon bridged Oligo Phenylenevinylene ‐ Fullerene) organic semiconductor via specialized Density Functional Theory (DFT) and Molecular Dynamics (MD) computational techniques. First, through DFT calculations, essential HOMO (Highest Occupied Molecular Orbital), LUMO (Lowest Unoccupied Molecular Orbital), and Molecular Electrostatic Potential (MEP) electronic attributes are meticulously dissected providing insights into the intricate charge transfer processes between the constituent donor‐acceptor moieties. Furthermore, MD simulations are employed to unveil the molecular system's multifaceted conformational flexibility and stability. The Root‐mean‐squared deviation (RMSD), end‐to‐end distance, and torsional angles quantitative analysis of conformational attributes support the carbon‐bridged oligo‐phenylenevinylene (COPV) molecular wire's π ‐skeleton planar and rigid conformation. This minimal end‐to‐end distance variation (within ±1 Å) compared to the initially extended structure and the constrained torsional motion (within ±20∘ for ZnP‐COPV and ±30∘ for COPV‐C60 ) after thermalization showcases COPV's ability to maintain structural rigidity over time, aligning with the concept of effective π ‐conjugation. Finally, through the lens of time dependent (TD)‐DFT, the dynamic evolution of the HOMO–LUMO energy gap, TD‐DFT excitation energies and oscillator strengths are explored as the molecular structure transforms over time. The observed energy gap variation underscores the molecule's adaptability in the face of structural modifications, hinting at an intriguing connection between structural stability and enhanced electronic properties. The research provides a comprehensive understanding of the intricate interplay between conformational dynamics and electronic attributes in organic semiconductors, providing quantitative insights crucial for designing stable, high‐performance materials for cutting‐edge optoelectronic applications and helping advance the collective understanding of sustainable energy conversion.

Abstract:With the aim of utilizing structural modeling techniques to design efficient organic solar cells, a quantum chemical density functional theory (DFT) and its time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) study have been carried out for the examination of the photovoltaic properties of four BT-ClC-based novel non-fullerene acceptor (NFA) molecules. The designed entities (BT1–BT4) have an A-π-D-π-A configuration with seven fused ring-based BDT central core and newly substituted peripheral acceptor moieties. The optical parameters (absorption maxima, light-harvesting efficiency, first excitation energies, and dipole moments), electronic properties (frontier molecular orbitals, density of states, and molecular electrostatic potential), and charge transfer characteristics (open-circuit voltage, transition density matrix, and fill factor) of the investigated molecules were evaluated using the selected B3LYP/6-31G (d,p) level of theory. The systematic computational analysis reveals that under the influence of terminal acceptor groups, there is an augmentation in the absorption range, and reduction in the band gap values. The electron withdrawing effect of acceptor moieties is evident from the electronic density distribution on the HOMO–LUMO orbitals, along with the density of state (DOS) graphs. Transition density matrix (TDM) analyses reveal consistent charge transfer in the newly devised entities. Reorganization energies computed for electron and hole are significantly lower than the reference, making the transfer of charge carriers efficient. Open-circuit voltage ( V oc ) of reported acceptor entities, theoretically computed with PTB7-Th donor, revealed maximum output. Furthermore, the estimated fill factor (FF) of the investigated molecules predicted an increase in power conversion efficiencies. Consequently, all the computed parameters favor the applicability of our designed molecules in the field of organic photovoltaics by virtue of their excellent charge mobilities, increased absorption maximum values, and reduced band gaps.

Abstract:The donor-acceptor (D-A) copolymers, which exhibit wide broad absorption and intensified light -harvesting, are highly captivating for applications in solar conversion and optoelectronics. However, designing a polymer structure that can achieve these photophysical properties simultaneously remains a challenge. Herein, we report two novel cyanated units 4-cyanobenzo[1,2-b:6,5-b ':3,4-c '']trithiophene (CBT) and 4,6dicyanobenzo[1,2-b:6,5-b ':3,4-c '']trithiophene (C2BT) and their corresponding polymers, PCBT and PC2BT. Very interestingly, the PC2BT exhibited a broad absorption band with full width at half maxima (FWHM) of its absorption spectra, almost twice wider than PCBT and benchmark polymers PM6 and D18. Moreover, the PC2BT demonstrated intensified light -harvesting and long-lived exciton. Our in-depth investigation unveiled that the presence of dicyano substitutions induced a strong intramolecular charge transfer (ICT), which, in turn, resulted in the formation of favorable photophysical properties. Therefore, PC2BT-based polymer solar cells (PSCs) exhibited an efficiency of 18.06%, which was a record -setting efficiency for cyanated polymers. This study suggests an efficient strategy for enhancing ICT to design polymers toward favorable photophysical properties and excellent photovoltaic performance.
