Abstract:We theoretically investigate the apparent contact angle and contact angle hysteresis of a droplet placed on a liquid infused surface. We show that the apparent contact angle is not uniquely defined by material parameters, but also has a strong dependence on the relative size between the droplet and its surrounding wetting ridge formed by the infusing liquid. We derive a closed form expression for the contact angle in the limit of vanishing wetting ridge, and compute the correction for small but finite ridge, which corresponds to an effective line tension term. We also predict contact angle hysteresis on liquid infused surfaces generated by the pinning of the contact lines by the surface corrugations. Our analytical expressions for both the apparent contact angle and contact angle hysteresis can be interpreted as `weighted sums' between the contact angles of the infusing liquid relative to the droplet and surrounding gas phases, where the weighting coefficients are given by ratios of the fluid surface tensions.

Abstract:Substrate defects crucially influence the onset of sliding drop motion under lateral driving. A finite force is necessary to overcome the pinning influence even of microscale heterogeneities. The depinning dynamics of three-dimensional drops is studied for hydrophilic and hydrophobic wettability defects using a long-wave evolution equation for the film thickness profile. It is found that the nature of the depinning transition explains the experimentally observed stick-slip motion.

Abstract:The contact line dynamics during the evaporation of nano-droplets sessile on textured solid substrates is investigated using molecular dynamics method. Our simulations reproduce the nanoscale physical phenomena such as the constant contact angle (CCA) and constant contact radius (CCR) evaporation modes which have been reported in recent experiments. The results also show that the localized liquid-solid interaction in the vicinity of the contact line dominates the wetting behavior on the textured surfaces, which also indicates a molecular origin of the pinning force. Increase of the characteristic width of the inhomogeneity enlarges the energy barrier to jumping out a hydrophilic textured element, which further results in a larger pinning force. For the evaporation of a nano-droplet on the surface with large pinning force, the anchoring of the contact line and the CCR mode are observed at the first onset. While on the textured surfaces with smaller characteristic width of the inhomogeneity, only the CCA and mixed modes can be found during the evaporation. This work provides a foundation on which the sessile nano-droplet evaporation can be understood from atomistic scale.
Contact angle hysteresis on nonwetting microstructured surfaces: Effect of randomly distributed pillars or holes

Abstract:We present a numerical study of the advancing and receding apparent contact angles for a liquid meniscus in contact with an ultrahydrophobic surface with randomly distributed microsized pillars or holes in the Cassie's wetting regime. We study the Wilhelmy plate system in the framework of the full capillary model to obtain these angles using the heterogeneous surface approximation model for a broad interval of values of pillar or hole concentration and for both square and circular shapes of the pillars or holes cross-section. Three types of random placing of defects on the plate are investigated, i.e., two with restrictions: (1) with maximum and (2) with minimum distance between the defects (in these cases the defects are isolated), and (3) without restrictions (the defects can overlap). The results show that the type of defect distribution and also the type of the defects shape (circular or square) does not affect the magnitude of the two angles. The results of the numerical simulations showed that the retention force for a plate with randomly located defects is not greater, and for larger concentrations of pillars or holes, it is smaller than that for periodically spaced ones. Comparisons with experimental results for the receding contact angle on surfaces with pillars and with the advancing contact angle on surfaces with periodically arranged holes is carried out.
Pinning Effects of Wettability Contrast on Pendant Drops on Chemically Patterned Surfaces

Abstract:The morphology and dynamics of the pendant drops attached to chemically patterned surfaces (pattern-pinned pendant drops) with different hydrophilic/hydrophobic contrasts were investigated experimentally and numerically. During the experiments, the evolution of the contact angle and the maximum drop volume were found to be different from those of traditional pendant drops, whose contact line is pinned on the edge of the tips (tip-pinned pendant drops), and the deviation is related to both the pattern radius and the wettability contrast. Then, a hypothesis was proposed to illustrate the behavior of the contact line after it reached the pattern boundary, based on the premise that the pattern boundary possessed a certain width or fuzziness. It was concluded that the special phenomena in this case were due to the movement of the contact line, and the maximum contact radius was presented as a key parameter for the pattern-pinned drops, which is directly related to the stability and the maximum volume of the drops. Furthermore, through a simulation study on pattern pinned pendant drops, the vibration performance of the meniscus was revealed as a superposition of two vibration behaviors including a low-frequency vibration due to the inertia effects and a high-frequency vibration due to the surface tension gradient within the boundary region. In addition, the hypothesis proposed above was also verified. Finally, a forecasting model to predict the maximum contact radius for the pattern-pinned pendant drops was built for different liquids and pattern wettabilities. This allows us to effectively design and optimize chemically patterned surfaces to achieve a desired pinning function or a pendant drop with desired properties.
Modelling contact angle hysteresis on chemically patterned and superhydrophobic surfaces

Abstract:We investigate contact angle hysteresis on chemically patterned and superhydrophobic surfaces, as the drop volume is quasi-statically increased and decreased. We consider both two, and three, dimensions using analytical and numerical approaches to minimise the free energy of the drop. In two dimensions we find, in agreement with other authors, a slip, jump, stick motion of the contact line. In three dimensions this behaviour persists, but the position and magnitude of the contact line jumps are sensitive to the details of the surface patterning. In two dimensions we identify analytically the advancing and receding contact angles on the different surfaces and we use numerical insights to argue that these provide bounds for the three dimensional cases. We present explicit simulations to show that a simple average over the disorder is not sufficient to predict the details of the contact angle hysteresis, and to support an explanation for the low contact angle hysteresis of suspended drops on superhydrophobic surfaces.

Abstract:Contact angle hysteresis of a macroscopic droplet on a heterogeneous but flat substrate is studied using the interface displacement model. First, the apparent contact angle of a droplet on a heterogeneous surface under the condition of constant volume is considered. By assuming a cylindrical liquid-vapor surface (meniscus) and minimizing the total free energy, we derive an equation for the apparent contact angle, which is similar but different from the well-known Cassie's law. Next, using this modified Cassie's law as a guide to predict the behavior of a droplet on a heterogeneous striped surface, we examine several scenarios of contact angle hysteresis using a periodically striped surface model. By changing the volume of the droplet, we predict a sudden jump of the droplet edge, and a continuous change of the apparent contact angle at the edge of two stripes. Our results suggest that as drop volume is increased (advancing contact lines), the predominant drop configuration observed is the one whose contact angle is large; whereas, decreasing drop volume from a large value (receding contact lines) yields drop configuration that predominantly exhibit the smaller contact angle.

Abstract:In this paper, the pinning and depinning mechanism of the contact line during droplet evaporation on chemically stripe-patterned surfaces is numerically investigated using a thermal multiphase lattice Boltzmann (LB) model with liquid-vapor phase change. A local force balance in the context of diffuse interfaces is introduced to explain the equilibrium states of droplets on chemically patterned surfaces. It is shown that, when the contact line is pinned on a hydrophobic-hydrophilic boundary, different contact angles can be interpreted as the variation of the length of the contact line occupied by each component. The stick-slip-jump behavior of evaporating droplets on chemically patterned surfaces is well captured by the LB simulations. Particularly, a slow movement of the contact line is clearly observed during the stick (pinning) mode, which shows that the pinning of the contact line during droplet evaporation on chemically stripe-patterned surfaces is actually a dynamic pinning process and the dynamic equilibrium is achieved by the self-adjustment of the contact lines occupied by each component. Moreover, it is shown that, when the surface tension varies with the temperature, the Marangoni effect has an important influence on the depinning of the contact line, which occurs when the horizontal component (towards the center of the droplet) of the force caused by the Marangoni stress overcomes the unbalanced Young's force towards outside.

Abstract:Droplets on inclined substrates can depin and slide freely above a critical substrate inclination angle. Pinning can be caused by topographical defects on the substrate, and understanding the influence of defect geometry on the pinning-depinning transition is important for diverse applications such as fog harvesting, droplet-based microfluidic devices, self-cleaning surfaces, and inkjet printing. Here, we develop a lubrication-theory-based model to investigate the motion of droplets on inclined substrates with a single three-dimensional Gaussian-shaped defect that can be in the form of a bump or a dent. A precursor-film/disjoining-pressure approach is used to capture contact-line motion, and a nonlinear evolution equation is derived which describes droplet thickness as a function of the position along the substrate and time. The evolution equation is solved numerically using an alternating direction implicit finite-difference scheme to study how the defect geometry influences the critical inclination angle and the shape of a pinned droplet. It is found that the critical substrate inclination angle increases as the defect becomes taller/deeper or wider along the direction lateral to the droplet-sliding direction. However, the critical inclination angle decreases as the defect becomes wider along the sliding direction. Below the critical inclination angle, the advancing contact line of the droplet at the droplet centerline is pinned to the defect at the point having maximum negative slope. Simple scaling relations that reflect the influence of defect geometry on the droplet retention force arising from surface tension are able to account for many of the trends observed in the numerical simulations.

Abstract:In this work, the motion of a 2-D drop on a surface with given wettability gradient is studied numerically by a hybrid lattice-Boltzmann finite-difference method using the multiple-relaxation-time collision model. We incorporate the geometric wetting boundary condition that allows accurate implementation of a contact angle hysteresis model. The method is first validated through three benchmark tests, including the layered Poiseuille flow with a viscosity contrast, the motion of a liquid column in a channel with specified wettability gradient and the force balance for a static drop attached to a surface with hysteresis subject to a body force. Then, simulations of a drop on a wall with given wettability gradient are performed under different conditions. The effects of the Reynolds number, the viscosity ratio, the wettability gradient, as well as the contact angle hysteresis on the drop motion are investigated in detail. It is found that the capillary number of the drop in steady state is significantly affected by the viscosity ratio, the magnitudes of the wettability gradient and the contact angle hysteresis, whereas it only shows very weak dependence on the Reynolds number.

Abstract:It is confirmed that surfaces with specific microstructures could exhibit good superhydrophobic properties, and there are also a lot of conclusions about droplet hysteresis behavior. However, most of the research methods are based on two-dimensional ideal model and experimental observation at the macroscale. Further research needs to be conducted about the hysteresis behavior of droplets on the microstructure surface under three-dimensional conditions. In this paper, the influence of curvature variation of the liquid surface between pillars on the contact angle hysteresis (CAH) has been investigated. The simulation results were in good agreement with the experimental measurements. Analyses were conducted on the morphology change and force of the liquid surface between pillars, and an index was proposed to describe the degree of difficulty of liquid surface movement. It was revealed that a change in the direction of the surface tension at the three-phase interface caused by curvature variation of the liquid surface between pillars played an important role in the movement of the liquid surface. The greater the surface tension component in the normal direction of the liquid surface, the more likely it was for the liquid surface to advance or recede. The local curvature of the liquid surface increased or the angles between the pillars increased, and the effect of the CAH would be weakened.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:We perform a joint numerical and experimental study to sistematically characterize the motion of drops sliding over a periodic array of alternating hydrophobic and hydrophilic stripes with large wettability contrast, and typical width of hundreds of $\mu \textrm{m}$. The fraction of the hydrophobic stripes has been varied from about 20% to 80%. The effects of the heterogeneous patterning can be described by a renormalized value of the critical Bond number, i.e. the critical dimensionless force needed to depin the drop before it starts to move. Close to the critical Bond number we observe a jerkily motion characterized by an evident stick-slip dynamics. As a result, dissipation is strongly localized in time, and the mean velocity of the drops can easily decrease by an order of magnitude compared to the sliding on homogeneous surface. Lattice Boltzmann (LB) numerical simulations are crucial for disclosing to what extent the sliding dynamics can be deduced from the computed balance of capillary, viscous and body forces at varying the Bond number, the surface composition and the liquid viscosity. Away from the critical Bond number, we characterize both experimentally and numerically the dissipation inside the droplet by studying the relation between the average velocity and the applied volume forces.

Edge Contact Angle, Capillary Condensation, and Meniscus Depinning

Abstract:We study the phase equilibria of a fluid confined in an open capillary slit formed when a wall of finite length $H$ is brought a distance $L$ away from a second macroscopic surface. This system shows rich phase equilibria arising from the competition between two different types of capillary condensation, corner filling and meniscus depinning transitions depending on the value of the aspect ratio $a=L/H$. For long capillaries, with $a<2/\pi$, the condensation is of type I involving menisci which are pinned at the top edges at the ends of the capillary characterized by an edge contact angle. For intermediate capillaries, with $2/\pi<a<1$, depending on the value of the contact angle the condensation may be of type I or of type II, in which the menisci overspill into the reservoir and there is no pinning. For short capillaries, with $a>1$, condensation is always of type II. In all regimes, capillary condensation is completely suppressed for sufficiently large contact angles. We show that there is an additional continuous phase transition in the condensed liquid-like phase, associated with the depinning of each meniscus as they round the upper open edges of the slit. Finite-size scaling predictions are developed for these transitions and phase boundaries which connect with the fluctuation theories of wetting and filling transitions. We test several of our predictions using a fully microscopic Density Functional Theory which allows us to study the two types of capillary condensation and its suppression at the molecular level.

Abstract:In this paper, the contact angle hysteresis (CAH) of nanodroplets on both rigid and flexible substrates with different wettabilities was studied using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The critical shear stress (CSS) that determines the motion of the contact line (CL) was investigated. A theoretical correlation between CAH and CSS was proposed. Both CAH and CSS reflect the energy dissipation at the CL of the droplet in response to the exerted force. MD results of CAH are qualitatively consistent with the theoretical model. Simulation results also show that, for the same liquid–solid interactions, CAH on the flexible substrate is larger than that on the rigid substrate. These findings aim to enhance our understanding of the mechanism of the CAH at the nanoscale.
3D Representative Volume Element Reconstruction of Fiber Composites via Orientation Tensor and Substructure Features

Abstract:To provide a seamless integration of manufacturing processing simulation and fiber microstructure modeling, two new stochastic 3D microstructure reconstruction methods are proposed for two types of random fiber composites: random short fiber composites, and Sheet Molding Compounds (SMC) chopped fiber composites. A Random Sequential Adsorption (RSA) algorithm is first developed to embed statistical orientation information into 3D RVE reconstruction of random short fiber composites. For the SMC composites, an optimized Voronoi diagram based approach is developed for capturing the substructure features of SMC chopped fiber composites. The proposed methods are distinguished from other reconstruction works by providing a way of integrating statistical information (fiber orientation tensor) obtained from material processing simulation, as well as capturing the multiscale substructures of the SMC composites.
Sliding Friction and Contact Angle Hysteresis of Droplets on Microhole-Structured Surfaces

Abstract:Microstructured surfaces with continuous solid topography have many potential applications in biology and industry. To understand the liquid transport property of microstructured surfaces with continuous solid topography, we studied the sliding behavior of a droplet on microhole-structured surfaces. We found that the sliding friction of the droplet increased with increasing solid area fraction due to enlarged apparent contact area and enhanced contact angle hysteresis. By introducing a correction factor to the modified Cassie-Baxter relation, we proposed an improved theoretical model to better predict the apparent receding contact angle. Our experimental data also revealed that the geometric topology of surface microstructures could affect the sliding friction with microhole-decorated surfaces, exhibiting a larger resistance than that for micropillar-decorated surfaces. Assisted by optical microscopy, we attributed this topology effect to the continuity and the true total length of the three-phase contact line at the receding edge during the sliding. Our study provides new insights into the liquid sliding behavior on microstructured surfaces with different topologies, which may help better design functional surfaces with special liquid transport properties.
Contact Angle Hysteresis on Rough Surfaces Part II: Energy Dissipation via Microscale Interface Dynamics

Abstract:The wetting behaviour of surfaces is important for various applications like super-hydrophobic surfaces, enhanced oil recovery, mining of metal ores and anti-icing surfaces etc. For rough surfaces, which are the rule rather than the exception, designing textured surfaces that have wetting properties tailored to suit these applications generally involves either bio-mimicry or trial and error. Existing wetting theories such as the well-known Wenzel (1936) and Cassie & Baxter (1944) models do not predict wetting regimes and importantly, only give a single equilibrium angle rather than a range of stable contact angles (hysteresis) as observed in reality. In this paper, we use a roughness-scale mechanical energy balance (derived in part I) combined with simulations of micro-scale interface dynamics based on open-source software (Surface Evolver (Brakke 1992)) to calculate the energy dissipation during the motion of an interface over a chemically homogeneous rough surface. This dissipation is used to predict contact angle hysteresis (CAH) from knowledge of just the surface roughness topography and equilibrium contact angle. We simulate interface dynamics over a surface decorated with a periodic array of round-edge square pillars and show that the energy dissipated varies approximately as ${\phi}ln{\phi}$ with the area fraction (${\phi}$), and becomes zero as ${\phi} \to 0$. The CAH predicted by our method is in good agreement with the experimental results of Forsberg et al. (2010), especially at low area fractions. We also compute CAH for an interface moving at 45$°$ to the surface periodicity direction, showing that the experimental measurements are bracketed by the 0$°$ and 45$°$ advance direction results.

Abstract:Droplet evaporation on heterogeneous or patterned surfaces has numerous potential applications, for example, inkjet printing. The effect of surface heterogeneities on the evaporation of a nanometer-sized cylindrical droplet on a solid surface is studied using molecular dynamics simulations of Lennard-Jones particles. Different heterogeneities of the surface were achieved through alternating stripes of equal width but two chemical types, which lead to different contact angles. The evaporation induced by the heated substrate instead of the isothermal evaporation is investigated. It is found that the whole evaporation process is generally dominated by the nonuniform evaporation effect. However, at the initial moment, the volume expansion and local evaporation effects play important roles. From the nanoscale point of view, the slow movement of the contact line during the pinning process is observed, which is different from the macroscopic stationary pinning. Particularly, we found that the speed of the contact line may be not only affected by the intrinsic energy barrier between the two adjacent stripes ( ũ) but also relevant to the evaporation rate. Generally speaking, the larger the intrinsic energy barrier, the slower the movement of the contact line. At the specified temperature, when ũ is less than a critical energy barrier ( ũ*), the speed of the contact line would increase with the evaporate rate. When ũ > ũ*, the speed of the contact line is determined only by ũ and no longer affected by the evaporation rate at different stages (the first stick and the second stick).
Contact Angle Hysteresis on Superhydrophobic Stripes

Abstract:We study experimentally and discuss quantitatively the contact angle hysteresis on striped superhydrophobic surfaces as a function of a solid fraction, $\phi_S$. It is shown that the receding regime is determined by a longitudinal sliding motion the deformed contact line. Despite an anisotropy of the texture the receding contact angle remains isotropic, i.e. is practically the same in the longitudinal and transverse directions. The cosine of the receding angle grows nonlinearly with $\phi_S$, in contrast to predictions of the Cassie equation. To interpret this we develop a simple theoretical model, which shows that the value of the receding angle depends both on weak defects at smooth solid areas and on the elastic energy of strong defects at the borders of stripes, which scales as $\phi_S^2 \ln \phi_S$. The advancing contact angle was found to be anisotropic, except as in a dilute regime, and its value is determined by the rolling motion of the drop. The cosine of the longitudinal advancing angle depends linearly on $\phi_S$, but a satisfactory fit to the data can only be provided if we generalize the Cassie equation to account for weak defects. The cosine of the transverse advancing angle is much smaller and is maximized at $\phi_S\simeq 0.5$. An explanation of its value can be obtained if we invoke an additional energy due to strong defects in this direction, which is shown to be proportional to $\phi_S^2$. Finally, the contact angle hysteresis is found to be quite large and generally anisotropic, but it becomes isotropic when $\phi_S\leq 0.2$.

Thermodynamically, the advancing and receding angles are often interpreted as the maximum and minimum contact angles that can be formed by a droplet without losing its stability. Despite intensive research on wetting of rough surfaces, the gravitational effect on these angles has been overlooked because most studies have considered droplets smaller than the capillary length. In this study, however, by combining theoretical and numerical modeling, we show that the shape of a droplet smaller than the capillary length can be substantially modified by gravity under advancing and receding conditions. First, based on the Laplace pressure equation, we predict the shape of a two-dimensional Cassie-Baxter droplet on a textured surface with gravity at each pinning point. Then the stability of the droplet is tested by examining the interference between the liquid surface and neighboring pillars as well as analyzing the free energy change upon depinning. Interestingly, it turns out that the apparent contact angles under advancing and receding conditions are not affected by gravity, while the overall shape of a droplet and the position of the pinning point is affected by gravity. In addition, the advancing and receding of the droplet with continuously increasing or decreasing volume is analyzed, and it is showed that the gravitational effect plays a key role on the movement of the droplet tip. Finally, the theoretical predictions were validated against line-tension based front tracking modeling that seamlessly captures the attachment and detachment between the liquid surface and the solid substrate.
