Abstract:Silicon (Si) has garnered significant attention as a high-capacity anode material in high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Nevertheless, huge volume variation of Si (>300%) during cycling results in rapid capacity deterioration, thereby impeding its commercial application. To confront this challenge, inorganic binder has been identified as a highly promising solution for Si anode due to its high bonding strength. Despite its effectiveness, the inorganic binder's limited elasticity hinders the rejuvenation of the impaired electrode structure. Hence, we devised an elasticity and self-healing composite binder, incorporating both inorganic and organic binders. The inorganic lithium metasilicate not only offers ample adhesion sites to Si but also establishes a protective coating layer on SiNPs. Simultaneously, the organic poly (vinyl alcohol) featuring a low glass transition temperature (72 °C) furnishes elasticity and self-healing framework. Consequently, the Si anode shows exemplary cycling and rate performances. Additionally, the Si||NCM811 full cell attains a reversible capacity of 1.86 mAh cm-2 with a capacity retention of 67 % after 50 cycles, indicating the commercial application potential of the composite binder. This study thus explores design strategies for composite binders, paving the way for high-performance Si anode.

Abstract:Silicon is known for high-capacity yet large-volume-change properties when used as lithium storage material. Polymeric binders substantially contribute to improving the cycling life and increasing areal capacity of silicon anode. Herein, a robust network binder (PG-c-ECH) via localized linking by small molecules is proposed to achieve stable cycling performance of silicon anode with high areal capacity. Peach gum (PG) is rich in abundant hydroxyl and carboxyl groups that conventionally ensure a strong binding affinity between the PG and Si. The epichlorohydrin (ECH) introduced as the short-chain chemical crosslinker further enhances the localized linking for the polymer chains. The resultant PG-c-ECH owns durable interfacial adhesion and outstanding mechanical properties to stabilize the structural integrity of Si anode.

Abstract:Silicon (Si) is considered a high-capacity anode material with potential for next-generation lithium-ion batteries. However, the commercial application of Si anode is seriously hindered by huge volume variation (>300%) and limited Li+ diffusion ability. Herein, lithium metasilicate (LS), a novel inorganic binder, was innovatively developed to accommodate these challenges. Favorable compatibility is observed between the LS binder and Si nanoparticles (SiNPs) due to the existence of Si element within the LS skeleton. The interaction of the LS binder and SiNPs leads to a strong adhesion effect, enhancing the cycling stability of Si anode. The Si electrode with the LS binder presented an average discharge capacity of 2123 mAh/g at 0.84 A/g after 100 cycles. Furthermore, the presence of the Li+ transport channel within the LS binder enhances Li+ diffusion ability within Si anode. As a result, the average discharge capacity reaches 663 mAh/g at 8.4 A/g. This work thus explored new inorganic binder design approaches for Si anode, contributing to the advancement of high-performance Si anode.
Constructing Robust Cross-Linked Binder Networks for Silicon Anodes with Improved Lithium Storage Performance

Abstract:Despite the high specific capacity of silicon as a promising anode material for the next-generation high-capacity Li-ion batteries (LIBs), its practical applications are impeded by the rapid capacity decay during cycling. To tackle the issue, herein, a binder-grafting strategy is proposed to construct a covalently cross-linked binder [carboxymethyl cellulose/phytic acid (CMC/PA)], which builds a robust branched network with more contact points, allowing stronger bonds with Si nanoparticles by hydrogen bonding. Benefitting from the enhanced mechanical reliability, the resulting Si-CMC/PA electrodes exhibit a high reversible capacity with improved long-term cycling stability. Moreover, an assembled full cell consisting of the as-obtained Si-CMC/PA anode and commercial LiFePO4 cathode also exhibits excellent cycling performance (120.4 mA h g-1 at 1 C for over 100 cycles with 88.4% capacity retention). In situ transmission electron microscopy was employed to visualize the binding effect of CMC/PA, which, unlike the conventional CMC binder, can effectively prevent the lithiated Si anodes from cracking. Furthermore, the combined ex situ microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis unveils the origin of the superior Li-ion storage performance of the Si-CMC/PA electrode, which arises from its excellent structural integrity and the stabilized solid-electrolyte interphase films during cycling. This work presents a facile and efficient binder-engineering strategy for significantly improving the performance of Si anodes for next-generation LIBs.

Abstract:Silicon monoxide (SiO) is a promising anode material for thenext-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its higher capacity thangraphite and better cycle life than pure silicon. However, the issues ofvolume changes, low mass loading, and poor conductivity still exist. In thisstudy, an economic battery manufacturing technique is developed topromote the performance of commercial SiO/C-based batteries. A noveltriblock copolymer binder was synthesized and used to relieve the volumechanges and improve ion transportation. Copper nanowires were adopted inthe anode material to improve electrical conductivity. A high mass loadinganode with a laminated conductive structure was fabricated by spraying alayer upon layer. The synthesized SiO/C exhibits a high specific capacityretention of 606 mA h g-1after 200 cycles at a high areal mass loading of10.26 mg cm-2. Furthermore, under a current density of 1 C (1255 mA g-1),it delivers a reversible rate capacity of 620 mA h g-1. This novel design pavesa new way to fabricate high-performance SiO-based anodes for commercial LIB applications.

Abstract:The cross‐linked binder processes 3D networks, self‐healing features, and excellent mechanical properties, alleviating the damage caused by the expansion of Si particles to the electrodes and protecting the structural integrity of the Si‐based electrodes. More significantly, the self‐healing Si anode is used in a full cell with solvate ionic liquid‐based quasi‐solid electrolyte, showing excellent cycling stability and rate capability. Silicon (Si) is becoming one of the most promising candidates for lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) owing to its high theoretical capacity, ultralow lithiation/delithiation voltage, non‐flammability, abundant natural reserves, etc. However, Si particles undergo violent volume expansion/contraction during the charge/discharge cycles, resulting in a series of serious problems such as Si particle pulverization, solid electrolyte interphase film overgrowth, and electrode structure collapse, which severely hinders the application of silicon‐based LIBs. Herein, a composite binder crosslinked by polyacrylic acid and p‐toluene sulfonic acid protonated polyaniline is proposed to improve the electrochemical performance of Si‐based anodes. The cross‐linked composite binder processes 3D networks, fast self‐healing features, and excellent mechanical strength, which can alleviate the damage caused by the expansion of Si particles to the electrodes and protect the structural integrity of the Si‐based electrodes. As a result, the Si‐based anodes with the composite binder present excellent cycle stability (2092.9 mAh g−1 after 300 cycles at 400 mA g−1). In addition, the novel binder reveals well compatibility with commercial Si microparticles. More importantly, the self‐healing Si anode is firstly equipped in an all‐solid‐LIB with solvate ionic liquid‐based quasi‐solid electrolyte and shows excellent cycling stability as well as rate capability.

Abstract:Silicon (Si), as an ideal anode component for lithium-ion batteries, is susceptible to substantial volume changes, leading to pulverization and excessive electrolyte consumption, ultimately resulting in a rapid decline in the cycle stability. Herein, a new sodium carboxymethyl cellulose-epichlorohydrin (CMC-ECH) binder featuring a three-dimensional (3D) network cross-linked structure is synthesized by a simple ring-opening reaction, which can effectively bond the Si anode through abundant covalent and hydrogen bonds to mitigate its pulverization. Benefitting from the merits of the CMC-ECH binder, the electrochemical performance is significantly enhanced compared to the CMC binder. The CMC-ECH binder is applied to Si anodes, a specific capacity of 1054.2 mAh g-1 can be maintained at 0.2 C following 200 cycles under an elevated Si mass loading of around 1.0 mg cm-2, and the corresponding capacity retention is 65.6%. In the case of the LiFePO4//Si@CMC-ECH full battery, the cycle stability exhibits a substantial enhancement compared with the LiFePO4//Si@CMC full battery. Furthermore, the CMC-ECH binder demonstrates compatibility with micron-Si anode materials. Based on the above, we have successfully developed a facilely prepared water-based CMC-ECH binder that is suitable for Si and micron-Si anodes in lithium-ion batteries.
An Elastic Cross-Linked Binder for Silicon Anodes in Lithium-Ion Batteries with a High Mass Loading

Abstract:Due to the urgent demand for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with a high energy density, silicon (Si) possessing an ultrahigh capacity has aroused wide attention. However, its practical application is seriously hindered by enormous volume changes of the Si anode during cycling. Developing novel binders suitable for the Si anode has proven to be an effective strategy to improve its electrochemical performance. Herein, we constructed a three-dimensional network binder, in which the polyacrylic acid (PAA) long chains are cross-linked with one kind of amino acid, lysine (Lys). The abundant polar groups in PAA/Lys enable it to tightly adhere to the Si particles via hydrogen bonds, and the cross-linked structure prevents irreversible slipping of the PAA chains upon volume variation of the particles. The Si used was obtained from a sustainable route by recycling photovoltaic waste silicon. With high elasticity and strong adhesion, the PAA/Lys binder can effectively keep the structural integrity of the Si electrode and improve its electrochemical performance. The Si electrode using the PAA/Lys binder exhibits a good cycling stability (1008 mAh g-1 at 2 A g-1 after 250 cycles). Even with a high mass loading of 3.03 mg cm-2, the Si anode can remain stable for 100 cycles at a high fixed areal capacity of 3.03 mAh cm-2. This work gives a practical method to make stable Si electrodes using sustainable Si source and environmentally friendly amino acid-based binders.
In Situ Room-Temperature Cross-Linked Highly Branched Biopolymeric Binder Based on the Diels–Alder Reaction for High-Performance Silicon Anodes in Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Silicon (Si) is an auspicious anode material in next-generation lithium-ion batteries due to its exceptional theoretical gravimetric capacity, environmental friendliness, and high natural abundance. However, the practical application of Si anodes remains a "must-solve" challenge because of its drastic capacity fading that results from the inherent property of drastic volume expansion of Si during repeated lithiation and delithiation. Developing binders employed in robust electrodes has been considered an economical and practical method to affect the electrochemical performance of Si-based electrodes. Some natural polymers have demonstrated good adhesive properties with Si-active materials. However, they have limited capacity to keep the structural integrity of electrodes because the network structures solely based on weak hydrogen bonds are susceptible to deformation during cycling. Herein, we develop an in situ covalently cross-linked three-dimensional (3D) supramolecular network and apply it to the Si electrode to improve cycling performance. This network architecture is constructed using furan-modified branched arabinoxylan of corn fiber gum (CFG) and an ionically conductive cross-linker of maleimido-poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) through the Diels-Alder reaction. The maleimide groups in PEG can react spontaneously with the furan groups in CFG at room temperature without any other stimulation, thus forming strong covalent bonds in the network. The cross-linked CFG-PEG binder has demonstrated robust adhesive properties with Si-active materials and the current collector. The branching of CFG and functional groups of PEG are conducive to improving the lithium-ion conductivity in the silicon anode, resulting in excellent rate performances. The Si anode with a cross-linked CFG-PEG binder exhibits superior cycling stability. As a result, an in situ cross-linking 3D network as a novel binder has a great potential for fabricating an advanced Si anode in next-generation Li-ion batteries.

Abstract:Capacity retention is one of the key factors affecting the performance of silicon (Si)-based lithium-ion batteries and other energy storage devices. Herein, a three dimension (3D) network self-healing binder (denoted as PVA + LB) consisting of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and lithium metaborate (LiBO2) solution is proposed to improve the cycle stability of Si-based lithium-ion batteries. The reversible capacity of the silicon electrode is maintained at 1767.3 mAh g−1 after 180 cycles when employing PVA + LB as the binder, exhibiting excellent cycling stability. In addition, the silicon/carbon (Si/C) anode with the PVA + LB binder presents superior electrochemical performance, achieving a stable cycle life with a capacity retention of 73.7% (858.3 mAh g−1) after 800 cycles at a current density of 1 A g−1. The high viscosity and flexibility, 3D network structure, and self-healing characteristics of the PVA + LB binder are the main reasons to improve the stability of the Si or Si/C contained electrodes. The novel self-healing binder shows great potential in designing the new generation of silicon-based lithium-ion batteries and even electrochemical energy storage devices.

Novel Binder with Cross-Linking Reconfiguration Functionality for Silicon Anodes of Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Silicon is expected to be used as a high theoretical capacity anode material in lithium-ion batteries with high energy densities. However, the huge volume change incurred when silicon de-embeds lithium ions, leading to destruction of the electrode structure and a rapid reduction in battery capacity. Although binders play a key role in maintaining the stability of the electrode structure, commonly used binders cannot withstand the large volume expansion of the silicon. To alleviate this problem, we propose a PGC cross-linking reconfiguration binder based on poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), gelatin (GN), and β-cyclodextrin (β-CD). Within PGC, PAA supports the main chain and provides a large number of carboxyl groups (-COOH), GN provides rich carboxyl and amide groups that can form a cross-linking network with PAA, and β-CD offers rich hydroxyl groups and a cone-shaped hollow ring structure that can alleviate stress accumulation in the polymer chain by forming a new dynamic cross-linking coordination conformation during stretching. In the half cell, the silicon negative prepared by the PGC binder exhibited a high specific capacity and capacity maintenance ratio, and the specific capacity of the silicon negative electrode prepared by the PGC binder is still 1809 mAh g-1 and the capacity maintenance ratio is 73.76% following 200 cycles at 2 A g-1 current density, indicating that PGC sufficiently maintains the silicon negative structure during the battery cycle. The PGC binder has a simple preparation method and good capacity retention ability, making it a potential reference for the further development of silicon negative electrodes.
Remarkably Improved Cycling Stability of Commercial Micron-Sized Silicon Enabled by a Novel Organic/inorganic Hybrid Binder

Abstract:Silicon (Si) anode with ultra-high capacity and low cost are highly desirable for next-generation high-energy lithium-ion batteries, whereas suffers from severe volume change that causes rapid capacity decay upon lithiation/delithiation. The development of high-performance binders to alleviate volumetric expansion and maintain integrity of Si particles remains a significant challenge. Here, reported is a novel organic/inorganic hybrid binder composed of partial neutralized polyacrylic acid (PAAS) and sodium metaborate tetrahydrate (SMTH), which achieves in-situ crosslinking upon drying wafer electrodes. The robust crosslinked network structure with borate ester bonds is successfully attained, and can be modulated by changing the content of sodium metaborate. The strong covalent bond network endows the hybrid binder system with superior mechanical properties and powerful adhesion, which improve the contact and integrity of wafer silicon electrode by suppressing volume expansion and exfoliation, therefore facilitating Li-ion migration and enhancing electrochemical performance. The resulting commercial micro-silicon wafer electrode with PAAS/0.08SMTH binder remains a reversible specific capacity of 1670 mAh g-1 after 150 cycles at 300 mA g-1, largely superior to that prepared with the original PAAS binder because its reversible specific capacity was determined to be only 1046 mAh g-1 under identical conditions. The in-situ crosslinked 3D network structure provides a facile feasible way to improve the high-capacity anode materials for lithium-ion batteries.
Multifunctional Cross-Linking Composite Binder Enables the Stable Performance of Si-Based Anodes for High-Energy-Density Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:The intrinsic volumetric stress during cycling is the main obstacle for developing Si-based materials as high-energy-density lithium-ion battery anodes. Elastic binders have been demonstrated as an efficient approach to alleviate the stress of Si. Herein, we design a tough 3D hard/soft polymeric network (LPTS) using lithiated poly(acrylic acid), silk sericin, and highly branched tannic acid. Covalent cross-linking provides a robust mechanical strength to endure the large stress. The formed multiple hydrogen bonds with bonding energies between 3.46 and 25 kcal mol-1 can effectively dissipate the stress through sequential hydrogen bond disassociation. The multifunctional LPTS binder maintains the integrity of the Si-based electrodes during repeated discharging/charging. Additionally, Li+ can be transferred via a Li-conducting group (-COOLi), thereby enhancing the ionic conductivity of electrodes. Consequently, the Si/LPTS electrode exhibits an improved initial Coulombic efficiency and excellent durability over 400 cycles. Meanwhile, this binder is also suitable for Si-C anodes, enabling stable cycling at a high areal capacity >3.6 mAh cm-2 and delivering 72.2% capacity retention for the LFP||Si-C/LPTS full cell after 200 cycles. This study provides insight into developing efficient Si-based binders that are facile and low-cost for next-generation high-energy-density systems.

Abstract:Although silicon is one of the most prospective alternatives with ultrahigh theoretical capacity, its significant intrinsic volume changes seriously restricts its practical applications. Herein, a water-soluble polymer binder with a three dimensional (3D) network is exploited for stable silicon (Si) anode via in-situ thermal cross-linking of xanthan gum (XG) with polyacrylamide (PAM). Moreover, the cross-linked structure of c-XG-PAM gel binder with hydroxyl groups and amide groups remarkably enhances the adhesion on silicon and Cu current collector. As a result, the c-XG-PAM binder offers appealing electrochemical performance for SiNP electrodes (1104 mAh g−1 after 1000 cycles) and SiC electrodes (stabilizing for over 400 cycles). The gel polymer binder provides a prospective avenue for pursuing the elongated cycling life of high capacity battery electrodes.

Abstract:As a prospective and efficient strategy to address the volume expansion of the Si nanoparticles , the binder plays an increasingly significant role in the Si anode of lithium-ion batteries. Based on the inspiration of natural physics and cross-linked networks, a functional (named polyacrylic acid-citric acid-polyethyleneimine) binder that is similar to a flexible polymer skeleton integrated with a tough framework and efficient self-healing behavior is designed to achieve long cycling stability for Si anodes. The cross-linked network can be stabilized by the amide bonds, formed by polyethyleneimine (PEI) and polyacrylic acid (PAA). Based on this, citric acid (CA) can be added to form multiple hydrogen bonds, whose carboxyl groups can also establish a more reversible cross-linked network with Si particles . Then, PEI and CA molecules can connect with PAA to form a "rigid and flexible" structure. The expansion stress of Si nanoparticles is relieved by the protective buffer layer built by the addition of PEI and CA molecules. In addition, PAA, PEI, and CA work together to solve the problem that the action of CA and PAA alone cannot perform well under large currents. Hence, this water-based binder with a three-dimensional cross-linked network structure with self-healing ability has better performance during cycling: at a current density of 0.2C, it still has a capacity of 2017.4 mAh·g −1 after 200 cycles, with a capacity retention rate of 80.7 % (1745.3 mAh·g −1 , 300 cycles, a capacity retention of 74.9 %).

A Semi-fluid Multi-functional Binder for High-performance Silicon Anode of Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Currently, a variety of binders are developed to inhibit rapid capacity fading of Si. The Si anodes are mainly enhanced by the chemical bonding effect on the surface of conventional solid-state binders. However, with the huge volume change of silicon, solid binders are easy to be deactivated. Herein, a semi-fluid binder termed GPC is designed based on a viscoelastic crosslinking network with abundant active sites and self-healing performance. The backbone of the binder network is in-situ synthesized by guar gum (GG), polyacrylic acid (PAA) and citric acid (CA). Serving as the flexible joints and the plasticizer of the network, CA small molecules remarkably improve the viscoelasticity of the binder to tolerate the volume change of Si via rearranging particles in the network during cycling. Moreover, CA can form a layer of surface coating on Si to stabilize the SEI for the long-term electrochemical performance. As a result, the Si@GPC electrode shows an excellent cycling stability, and exhibits a superb capacity of 1292 mAh/g after 1000 cycles at 2 A/g. This work illustrates the advantages and prospects of semi-fluid binder designing for high performance batteries.

Abstract:Practical employment of silicon (Si) electrodes in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is limited due to the severe volume changes suffered during charging-discharging process, causing serious capacity fading. Here, a composite polymer (CP-10) containing sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC-Na) and poly-lysine (PL) is proposed for the binder of Si-based anodes, and a multifunctional strategy of "in-situ crosslinking" is achieved to alleviate the severe capacity degradation effectively. A cross-linked three-dimensional (3D) network is established through the strong hydrogen bonding interaction and reversible electrostatic interactions within CP-10, offering favorable mechanical tolerance for the extreme volume expansion of Si. Moreover, hydrogen bonding interaction along with ion-dipole interaction formed between CP-10 and Si surface enhance the bonding capability of Si-based anodes, promoting the maintenance of anodes' integrity. Consequently, over 800 cycles are achieved for the Si@CP-10 at 0.5C while maintaining a fixed discharge specific capacity of 1000 mAh g-1. Moreover, the Si/C@CP-10 can stably operate over 500 cycles with a capacity retention of 77.12 % at 1C. The prolonged cycling lifetime of Si/C and Si anodes suggests great potential for this strategy in promoting the implementation of high-capacity LIBs.

Abstract:In next generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), silicon is a promising electrode material due to its surprisingly high specific capacity, but it suffers from serious volume changes during the lithiation/delithiation process which gradually lead to the destruction of the electrode structure. A novel fluorinated copolymer with three different polar groups was synthesized to overcome this problem: carboxylic acid, amide, and fluorinated groups on a single polymer backbone. Moreover, a dual cross-linked network binder was prepared by thermal polymerization of the fluorinated copolymer and sodium alginate. Unlike the common chemical cross-linked network with a gradual and nonreversible fracturing, the dual cross-linked network which combines chemical and physical cross-linking could effectively hold the silicon particles during the volume change process. As a result, excellent electrochemical performance (1557 mAh g(-1) at a 4 A g(-1) current density after 200 cycles) was achieved with this novel reversible cross-linked binder. Further research studies with regard to the influences of fluorine and acrylamide content were conducted to systematically evaluate the designed binder. Moreover, with the help of new binder, the silicon/graphite and silicon oxide/graphite electrode exhibit superb cycle performance with capacity fade rate of 0.1% and 0.025% per cycle over 200 and 700 cycles, respectively. This novel and unsophisticated design gives a result for fabrication of high-performance Si based electrodes and advancement of the realization of practical application.

Abstract:Though the binder is not an active material and does not contribute capacity to lithium ion batteries (LIBs), it is an important ingredient for maintaining the integrity of the electrode, which helps to improve electrical contact between the active materials and conductive carbon black, improves the Li + transport efficiency, reduces the internal resistance of Li-ion batteries and effectively depresses the crack formations and phase separation. Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) is a polymer that is commonly used as a binder for both anode and cathode materials in LIBs. However, it is not suitable for Si electrode due to its poor binding capability and stability. Viewed as a next generation anode material, Si has been extensively studied due to its extremely high theoretical specific capacity of 3578 mAh/g (assuming Li 15 Si 4 as intermediate product). However, silicon undergoes huge volume variations during repeated discharge and charge, which requires a strong binder to maintain the electrode mechanical integrity. Developing a high strength binder for silicon anodes has been considered as an efficient pathway to alleviate various capacity decay pathways. Polyacrylic acid (PAA) and its lithiated version (LiPAA), rich with carboxy function group, can provide stronger binding and are widely used as binder for Si electrode. In this work, we optimized Si electrode formulation by varying the binder composition. The optimized Si electrodes were electrochemically tested in both half cells and full cells. With improvement in electrochemical performance, cracks at the electrode level can still be observed for the cycled electrodes, which suggests that a stronger binder is required to mitigate volume expansion of Si electrodes and hold the particles together. We further studied the polyimide (PI) materials as binders for Si anodes in an attempt to achieve more stable cycling performance. In this work, we explore various PI crosslinking conditions and their effects on electrochemical performance. The optimized silicon electrode exhibits a higher tensile strength than that of conventional PAA binder. The strong adhesion of the PI binder suppresses the structural collapse of the Si negative electrode during lithiation/delithiation, enabling good capacity retention and stable cycle life.

Abstract:Binders plays an important role in preserving the mechanical stability of electrodes. Nevertheless, the typical binders normally are not stretchable to withstand a repeated large volume change, which are not suitable for high-loading silicon anodes. Herein, inspired by the natural parthenocissus, an elastic self-healing CA-PAA binder is designed for silicon anode to implement long-terms stable cycling. The multiple hydrogen bonds formed by in-situ cross-linking of water soluble citric acid (CA) and poly (acrylic acid) (PAA) can establish a reversible network for silicon particles. The CA molecule not only serves as the protecting buffer layer to release the inner stress and stabilize the solid electrolyte interface (SEI), but it can also connect with PAA to form a "inner flexibility and outer rigidity" spatial topology. Consequently, this self-healing binder enhanced silicon anode exhibits an excellent performance on accommodating the large volume change during cycling process. As expected, the silicon anode shows an impressive initial areal capacity of 6.5 mAh cm−2, 78% capacity retention after 50 cycles with a high mass loading of 1.8 mg cm−2, and an initial Coulombic efficiency of 89.5%. Meanwhile, the Si||NCM811 full cell shows 74% capacity retention after 100 cycles with a reversible capacity of 1.7 mAh cm−2.
