Abstract:1. The involvement of histamine receptor subtypes in the gastric acid secretory and mucosal blood flow responses of the pentobarbitone‐anaesthetized rabbit to histamine were investigated. 2. Histamine produced a dose‐related increase in gastric acid secretion and mucosal blood flow. Maximal effects were stimulated further by mepyramine and inhibited by metiamide. Mepyramine had no effect on methacholine‐ or impromidine‐stimulated gastric acid secretion or mucosal blood flow. 3. Impromidine also produced a dose‐related increase in gastric acid secretion and mucosal blood flow. The maximal effect produced depended on the method of administration. The H1‐receptor agonist 2‐TEA inhibited impromidine‐stimulated blood flow but not gastric acid secretion. 4. It is concluded that, in addition to stimulating acid secretion by an action on H2‐receptors, histamine also exerts an inhibitory effect which is mediated by H1‐receptors and that this inhibitory effect operates via reduced blood flow resulting from vasoconstriction in the stomach.
Sensitivity of diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging in transient global amnesia as a function of time from symptom onset

Abstract:Background: The objective was to systematically evaluate the sensitivity of diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW-MRI) for transient global amnesia (TGA) across various time frames compared to the reference-standard clinical criteria. Methods: All indexed publications related to TGA and MRI through June 2020 were retrieved by a medical librarian. Two independent reviewers identified original research studies of adults with a clinical diagnosis of TGA using Caplan and Hodges and Warlow criteria (reference standard) who were evaluated with DW-MRI. Pooled estimates and its 95% confidence intervals (CI) for the proportion of acute TGA patients with positive DW-MRI (i.e., sensitivity) were obtained using random-effects meta-analysis for various time frames. Quality assessment was performed using the revised Quality of Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies (QUADAS-2) tool. Results: After screening 665 reports, we identified 81 potentially relevant studies. Twenty-three studies representing 1688 patients met eligibility criteria, but not all studies had data available for meta-analysis. The pooled sensitivity (also described as positivity rate) of DW-MRI was 15.6% (95% CI = 2.6%-35.0%) between 0 and 12 h from symptom onset, 23.1% (95% CI = 6.1%-45.7%) at 0-24 h, 72.8% (95% CI = 40.8%-96.3) at 12-24 h, 68.8% (95% CI = 44.8%-88.8%) at 24-36 h, 72.4% (95% CI = 59.8%-83.5%) at 36-48 h, 82.8% (95% CI = 54.7%-99.6%) at 48-60 h, 66.9% (95% CI = 47.5%-83.9%) at 60-72 h, and 72.0% (95% CI = 30.1%-100.0%) at 72-96 h. There was significant concern for risk of bias in the QUADAS-2 domains of patient selection and index test, yielding a low level of certainty in the pooled estimates. Conclusion: DW-MRI lesions are uncommon in patients with TGA early after symptom onset, but the sensitivity (i.e., positivity rate) of DW-MRI increases with time. Despite the limited quality of existing evidence, obtaining an early DW-MRI in patients with clinical diagnosis of TGA in the acute setting is likely a low-yield test.
Lesion detectability on diffusion-weighted imaging in transient global amnesia: the influence of imaging timing and magnetic field strength

Abstract:Introduction: Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a benign disease with a sudden-onset, transient memory disturbance. Characteristic punctate high-signal intensity lesions in the hippocampus on diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) have been reported in variable frequencies. We investigated the influence of the timing of DWI and the magnetic field strength on the lesion detectability in TGA. Methods: Seventy-three patients diagnosed with TGA underwent DWI within 24 h after the symptom onset and again on day 3 at either 1.5 (n = 31) or 3 T (n = 42). The patients were divided into three subgroups according to the time lapse after the symptom onset to the first DWI (0-6 h, 6-12 h, and 12-24 h). Results: The detection rate of the lesions during the first 24 h rose statistically significantly with increased time lapse after the symptom onset (34% in 0-6 h, 62% in 6-12 h, and 67% in 12-24 h). It increased up to 75% on day 3. The detection rate was higher at 3 T than at 1.5 T in all time points (41% vs. 27% in 0-6 h, 70% vs. 44% in 6-12 h, 80% vs. 57% in 12-24 h, and 86% vs. 61% on day 3), but the statistical significance was achieved only on day 3. Conclusion: Awareness of the different lesion detectability on DWI according to the time lapse after the symptom onset can help in diagnosing the patients with suspected TGA. High field strength is another important factor to increase the lesion detectability on DWI.
Diagnostic Yield of Diffusion-Weighted Brain Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Patients with Transient Global Amnesia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract:Objective: To investigate the diagnostic yield of diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) in patients with transient global amnesia (TGA) and identify significant parameters affecting diagnostic yield. Materials and methods: A systematic literature search of the MEDLINE and EMBASE databases was conducted to identify studies that assessed the diagnostic yield of DWI in patients with TGA. The pooled diagnostic yield of DWI in patients with TGA was calculated using the DerSimonian-Laird random-effects model. Subgroup analyses were also performed of slice thickness, magnetic field strength, and interval between symptom onset and DWI. Results: Twenty-two original articles (1732 patients) were included. The pooled incidence of right, left, and bilateral hippocampal lesions was 37% (95% confidence interval [CI], 30-44%), 42% (95% CI, 39-46%), and 25% (95% CI, 20-30%) of all lesions, respectively. The pooled diagnostic yield of DWI in patients with TGA was 39% (95% CI, 27-52%). The Higgins I² statistic showed significant heterogeneity (I² = 95%). DWI with a slice thickness ≤ 3 mm showed a higher diagnostic yield than DWI with a slice thickness > 3 mm (pooled diagnostic yield: 63% [95% CI, 53-72%] vs. 26% [95% CI, 16-40%], p < 0.01). DWI performed at an interval between 24 and 96 hours after symptom onset showed a higher diagnostic yield (68% [95% CI, 57-78%], p < 0.01) than DWI performed within 24 hours (16% [95% CI, 7-34%]) or later than 96 hours (15% [95% CI, 8-26%]). There was no difference in the diagnostic yield between DWI performed using 3T vs. 1.5T (pooled diagnostic yield, 31% [95% CI, 25-38%] vs. 24% [95% CI, 14-37%], p = 0.31). Conclusion: The pooled diagnostic yield of DWI in TGA patients was 39%. DWI obtained with a slice thickness ≤ 3 mm or an interval between symptom onset and DWI of > 24 to 96 hours could increase the diagnostic yield.
Frequency of silent brain infarction in transient global amnesia

Abstract:Background and purpose: To determine the frequency and distribution pattern of acute DWI lesions outside the hippocampus in patients clinically presenting with Transient Global Amnesia (TGA). Methods: Consecutive patients clinically presenting with TGA between January 2010 and January 2017 admitted to our hospital were retrospectively evaluated. All patients fulfilled diagnostic criteria of TGA. We analyzed imaging and clinical data of all patients undergoing MRI with high-resolution diffusion-weighted imaging within 72 h from symptom onset. Results: A total of 126 cases were included into the study. Fifty-three percent (n = 71/126) presented with one or more acute lesions in hippocampal CA1-area. Additional acute DWI lesions in other cortical regions were found in 11% (n = 14/126). All patients with DWI lesions outside the hippocampus presented with neurological symptoms typical for TGA (without additional symptoms.) CONCLUSIONS: In a relevant proportion of clinical TGA patients, MRI reveals acute ischemic cerebral lesions. Therefore, cerebral MRI should be performed in patients with TGA to identify a possible cardiac involvement and to detect stroke chameleons.
Long-term sequelae of hippocampal lesions in patients with transient global amnesia: A multiparametric MRI study

Abstract:Background: MRI signal diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) hyperintensity in the hippocampus in patients with transient global amnesia (TGA) are resolved within several days after the onset of TGA. Purpose: To use multiparametric MRI to unravel the sequelae of TGA. Study type: A prospective longitudinal study. Population: Eight TGA patients. Field strength/sequence: A 3.0T Siemens Tim Trio MRI scanner with T1 -weighted MPRAGE, diffusion-weighted echo planar imaging, and multiecho gradient-recalled echo sequences. Assessment: Brain MRI scanned within 72 hours, 2 weeks, and 3 months after onset of TGA, respectively. T1 image hippocampus was first segmented into 12 subregions using FreeSurfer and registered to DWI to locate DWI lesion. Then a T1 image with segmented hippocampus was registered to its corresponding apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) map, fractional anisotropy (FA) map, and quantitative susceptibility map, respectively. Finally, the volume, water diffusion and anisotropy, and magnetic susceptibility of DWI lesion were analyzed. Statistical tests: A paired samples t-test was performed to detect measurement differences between three tests. Pearson correlation was used to assess the correlations between all measurements. Results: Hyperintensity was detected in the head, body, and caudate of CA1 and hippocampal tail. No significant changes existed in CA1/unit volume across the three timepoint measurements (all, P > 0.480). In Test 1, ratio ADC (DWI lesion / adjacent healthy, rADC) and ratio FA (rFA) decreased below, while ratio susceptibility increased above 1.0. In Test 2, all the episodes normalized around 1.0. In Test 3, rADC remained normalization, but rFA decreased and ratio susceptibility increased again. In Test 1 and Test 3 (vs. Test 2), decreased FA values were accompanied with lower axial diffusivity and/or higher radial diffusivity (all, P < 0.001). Moreover, rFA significantly correlated with ratio susceptibility in Test 3 (r = -0.665, P = 0.039). Data conclusion: Microstructural sequelae in hippocampus were demonstrated, which indicates that ischemic lesions may be associated with TGA. Level of evidence: 2 Technical Efficacy: Stage 3 J. Magn. A multicenter study of transient global amnesia for the better detection of magnetic resonance imaging abnormalities

Abstract:Background and purpose: The detection rate of diffusion-weighted (DWI) hyperintense lesions varies widely in patients with transient global amnesia (TGA). The aim was to examine the association of hyperintense lesions on DWI magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with patient characteristics, precipitating factors, clinical presentation and MRI settings in patients with TGA. Methods: In this multicenter retrospective observational study, using the standardized diagnosis entry system of electronic health records of four tertiary medical centers in the Kansai district of Japan, TGA patients (n = 261) who underwent brain MRI within 28 days of onset were examined. When the onset time was unavailable, the discovery time was used. Results: Diffusion-weighted hyperintense lesions were observed in 79 patients (30%). There were no significant differences in age, sex, vascular risk factors, precipitating factors or clinical presentation between patients with and without DWI lesions. The detection rate increased linearly 24 h after onset and then reached a plateau of 60%-80% by 84 h. After 84 h, the detection rate decreased rapidly. In a multivariate logistic regression model, MRI examination 24-84 h after onset (odds ratio 7.00, 95% confidence interval 3.50-13.99) and a thin-slice (≤3 mm) DWI sequence (odds ratio 7.59, 95% confidence interval 3.05-18.88) were independent predictors of DWI lesions. Conclusions: This study suggests that DWI hyperintense lesions in TGA are not associated with patient characteristics and clinical presentation. Brain MRI examination 24-84 h after onset and thin-slice DWI sequences enhance the detection of DWI lesions in TGA patients.
Transient global amnesia and focal diffusion weighted imaging lesions in mesiotemporal region: A ten-year experience

Abstract:Objective: To determine prevalence and characteristics of mesiotemporal diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) lesions in transient global amnesia (TGA), and to determine prevalence of "missed" DWI lesions on routine radiological reporting. Methods: This is a retrospective study of patients with TGA admitted to a tertiary care hospital over ten years. Patients with TGA, who underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain within one week of index event, were included in this study. MRI's were reviewed by two independent raters. Clinical data and other investigations were collated. Results: Of the 55 patients of TGA, 19 (35 %) had hyperintense DWI lesions with concordant apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) hypointensity in the mesiotemporal region. Fifteen out of 19 (79 %) had unilateral lesions (6 left, 9 right). Twelve out of 19 DWI lesions were reported at the time of index scan. The false negative reporting rate was 36.8 %. DWI slice thickness (5 mm versus 3 mm), MRI machine strength (1.5 versus 3 T) and time interval from symptom onset to MRI brain (>24 h versus ≤ 24 h) were not significantly different between patients with or without DWI lesions and as well between patients with DWI lesions missed and initially reported at the time of index scan. Conclusion: Punctuate DWI mesiotemporal lesions in TGA are prone to under-reporting. These lesions need to be categorically searched for at the time of reporting MRI Brain.
Transient global amnesia and hippocampal diffusion restriction: an overlooked radiological finding

Abstract:Transient global amnesia (TGA) is characterized by isolated sudden anterograde amnesia. Diffusion restriction can be observed in the hippocampus on DWI-MRI at varying rates in TGA patients. This study analyzes the prevalence and characteristics of the hippocampal diffusion restriction (HDR), its relationship with vascular risk factors, and the prevalence of lesions overlooked in routine reports. 91 patients diagnosed with TGA at a tertiary hospital between 2011 and 2022 were evaluated retrospectively. The mean age was 64.8 ± 7.3 years, and 63.7% of patients were female. 75.8% of the patients had at least one vascular risk factor. Focal diffusion restriction was detected in 17 patients (18.5%) on DWI-MRI, with only one being extra-hippocampal. 81.2% of HDR was detected when DWI-MRI scan was performed between 12 and 96 h after the onset of symptoms. HDR was detected most when the imaging was performed in 24 to 48 h ( p = 0.03). There was no correlation between the duration of symptoms and the detection rates of HDR ( p = 0.55). In 9 patients (53% of 17) diffusion restriction was not specified in routine radiology reports. Although focal ischemia, venous flow abnormalities, migraine and epileptic phenomena have been suggested in its etiology, TGA is a clinical condition of which pathophysiology has not been determined clearly. Signal changes observed in DWI-MRI has led to discussions that cerebrovascular etiology may play a role, yet more comprehensive studies are required to prevent and manage TGA. HDRs can be overlooked in routine reports. Therefore, the DWI-MRI images of patients with TGA should be examined vigilantly.

Clinical experience of modified diffusion-weighted imaging protocol for lesion detection in transient global amnesia: an 8-year large-scale clinical study

Abstract:Background and purpose: The detection rate of typical transient global amnesia (TGA) lesions on diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) can be improved, up to 85% with optimal DWI parameters and imaging time. There is limited evidence that these findings are similar to those observed in large-scale consecutive patients with TGA in clinical practice. Methods: Patients with clinically diagnosed TGA underwent magnetic resonance imaging studies, consecutively, with three sets of DWI parameters (standard clinical DWI protocols, the TGA DWI protocol I and the TGA DWI protocol II) in which the resolution, slice thickness, and the time interval between symptom onset of DWI were varied over an 8-year period. Results: TGA lesion detection rates were up to 88% with a modified TGA DWI protocol. The lesion detection rate was the highest using TGA DWI protocol I, with b = 3,000 s/mm(2), a slice thickness of 3 mm, and performed on the third day after symptom onset, and TGA DWI protocol II, with b = 2,000 s/mm(2) and a slice thickness of 2 mm. Conclusions: A modified TGA DWI protocols for detecting TGA lesions are useful in large-scale clinical practice for confirming the diagnosis of TGA patients with clinical findings.

Abstract:Background and purpose: Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a rare neurological disorder causing a transient disturbance of episodic long-term memory. Its etiology remains yet to be identified; the only consistently reported findings in patients with TGA are small hyperintense lesions in the hippocampus on diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWI). The aim of this study was to define whether these lesions are subfield specific, as suggested previously. Methods: High-resolution multiplanar reformation T1 and DWI of the hippocampus were acquired in 25 patients after TGA with a total of 43 hippocampal lesions. Hippocampal subfields were determined using the FreeSurfer software and the location of the DWI lesions was transformed to the T1 images after data co-registration. Additionally, hippocampal subfield volumes in each patient were calculated and compared with that of 20 healthy controls. Results: Hippocampal lesions were most frequently detected in the cornu ammonis area 1 (CA1) subfield (30.2%), the hippocampal tail (28.0%), and the subiculum (21.0%); however, lesions were also found in other subfields. There was no significant difference between patients and controls concerning the volumes of the hippocampal subfields. Conclusions: Contrasting previous assumptions, we found DWI hyperintense lesions not to be restricted to the CA1 subfield. The visualization of focal hippocampal lesions on diffusion imaging located to several different hippocampal subfields suggests a potential pathophysiology of TGA independent of microstructural hippocampal anatomy and subfield-specific vulnerability.
What remains after transient global amnesia (TGA)? An ultra-high field 7 T magnetic resonance imaging study of the hippocampus

Abstract:Background and purpose: The aim was to study whether ultra-high field 7 T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can demonstrate chronic focal defects in the hippocampus corresponding to the former acute diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) lesions and to assess chronic T2-hyperintense hippocampal lesion load in transient global amnesia (TGA) patients. Methods: Follow-up of 7 T MRI of the hippocampus was performed in 13 patients with documented hippocampal DWI lesions (detected via 3 T MRI) after acute TGA. The location of the DWI lesions was transformed to 7 T T2 images after data co-registration. Additionally, the T2-hyperintense lesion load was estimated in each patient and compared with that of 13 healthy controls. Results: Magnetic resonance imaging (7 T) was performed after a median of 4 months. No structural abnormality at the site of the previous TGA lesion was observed in any case. None of the controls showed DWI lesions. There was no significant difference between patients and controls concerning the number (P = 0.67) or volume (P = 0.45) of T2-hyperintense hippocampal lesions. Conclusions: Diffusion-weighted imaging lesions in patients with TGA do not provoke any visible sequelae and do not result in hippocampal cavities. The occurrence of incidental hippocampal T2 lesions after TGA is not more frequent than in controls.

Abstract:Hypercalciuria in inbred genetic hypercalciuric stone-forming (GHS) rats is due, in part, to a decrease in renal tubule Ca reabsorption. Activation of the renal Ca receptor (CaR) may decrease renal tubule Ca reabsorption and cause hypercalciuria through suppression of Ca-sensitive potassium channel activity. Because the rat renal CaR gene is regulated by extracellular calcium and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 [1,25(OH)2D3] and GHS rats have increased renal vitamin D receptor content, the current study was undertaken to determine the level of CaR gene expression in GHS rat kidney and whether CaR gene expression is regulated by 1,25(OH)2D3. Male GHS and normal control (NC) rats were fed a Ca-sufficient diet (0.6% Ca). Western blotting revealed a four-fold increase in CaR protein in GHS rat renal tissue, and 1,25(OH)2D3 administration increased renal CaR in both GHS and NC rats. Northern blot analysis of extracts of renal cortical tissue from GHS and NC rats revealed a major 7-kb transcript of CaR and a more modest 4-kb transcript, both of which were readily detectable. Both Northern blotting and real-time reverse transcription-PCR revealed increased basal CaR mRNA expression levels in GHS rat kidney. 1,25(OH)2D3 administration increased renal CaR mRNA levels 2.0- and 3.3-fold in GHS and NC rats, respectively. Despite the greater incremental increase by 1,25(OH)2D3 in NC rats, CaR mRNA levels remained higher in GHS rat kidney, and the elevation was more sustained. 1,25(OH)2D3 increased CaR mRNA through both elevated CaR gene expression and prolonged tissue half-life. These results demonstrate that GHS rats have high levels of CaR gene expression and CaR protein that may contribute to the hypercalciuria and calcium nephrolithiasis.

Abstract:The effects of different doses of pentazocine on circulation and respiration were investigated in 28 patients divided into three groups. The circulatory reactions occurred in two phases. In the first, immediately after the injection, ventilated patients showed vasodilation and therefore a decrease in the peripheral and pulmonary blood pressure due to the reduction in peripheral and pulmonary vascular resistance. In contrast, the second phase is characterized by a vasoconstriction with maximal alterations ten minutes after injection. As a consequence, the peripheral and pulmonary arterial pressure is increased by a raise in peripheral and pulmonary vascular resistance. These circulatory effects were more pronounced in the group receiving the higher dose of pentazocine. In spontaneously breathing patients pentazocine causes ventilatory depression indicated by a decrease in PaO2 and an increase in PaCO2. In these patients pulmonary vascular resistance and pulmonary arterial pressure are increased within the first minute after injection in contrast to the ventilated patients receiving the same dose. These increases are accompanied by the maximum of ventilatory depression. This change can be explained by the pulmonary hypoxic vasoconstriction.
Multivariate Optimization of Conditions for Digestion of Wet Feeds for Dogs and Cats Using a Closed Digester Block and Multielement Determination by ICP-OES.

Abstract:A full 24 factorial design was applied to find the best combination of diluted reagents (HNO3 and H2O2), time, and temperature for the digestion of samples of wet feed for dogs and cats using a closed digestion block. The residual carbon concentration (RCC) was used as the response in the factorial design. All variables and their interactions significantly influenced the digestion of the feed samples, as indicated by the RCC. The conditions established for the digestion of 0.05 g (dry mass) wet feed samples were the addition of 3.0 mol/L HNO3 and 5.0% m/m H2O2 in a final volume of 10 mL, followed by heating in a closed digestion block at a temperature of 170°C for 120 min. Analyses were performed by inductively coupled plasma (ICP) optical emission spectrometry (OES). LOQs ranged from 0.2 μg/g (Mg and Sr) to 51 μg/g (P). Accuracy of the analytical method was confirmed through the analysis of the Standard Reference Materials Tomato Leaves (NIST 1573), Apple Leaves (NIST 1515), and Peach Leaves (NIST 1547). The agreement values achieved ranged from 80.2 ± 0.3% for Ba to 113.8 ± 7.1% for Zn (n = 3). Addition and recovery tests were carried out by adding the analytes to a feed sample at two concentration levels, and the recoveries were between 84 ± 6 and 114 ± 10% for macroelements (Ca, K, Mg, and P; n = 3) and between 88 ± 3 and 113 ± 7% for microelements and trace elements (B, Cu, Fe, Sr, and Zn; n = 3). The precision values achieved for the different elements, expressed as RSDs, were better than 7.3% (Zn; n = 3) except for Cu determination, that was 14.6% (n=3). The optimized analytical method was applied to 10 commercial samples of wet feed for cats and dogs, with the concentrations of Al, B, Ba, Ca, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, P, Sr, and Zn determined by ICP-OES.
Hippocampal infarction: redefining transient global amnesia

Abstract:Background and aims: Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a clinical syndrome characterized by sudden anterograde amnesia not accompanied by other neurological symptoms. There is no consensus on the underlying pathophysiological mechanism. However, diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) of the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has demonstrated hippocampal lesions in as many as 50% of cases. This paper describes a series of patients with TGA and hippocampal lesions. Methods: This study assessed vascular risk factors in patients older than age 18 admitted to the Hospital Universitario San Ignacio, Bogota, Colombia, from May 2017 to June 2020 with a diagnosis of TGA and evidence of hippocampal ischemic lesion on 3 Tesla brain MRI. Results: The authors identified 36 patients, 72.2% female, with mean age 62 years. Cardiovascular risk factors, most frequently high blood pressure, carotid disease, and dyslipidemia, were present in 75% of these patients. Hippocampal lesions were unilateral in 80% of cases, with median size 2.5 mm, most frequently located at the hippocampal body. Approximately 14% of patients also presented acute ischemic lesions in locations other than the hippocampus. Conclusions: TGA is a clinical entity previously considered to have undetermined etiology. The present study used brain MRI to identify a group of patients with hippocampal ischemic lesions, finding associated vascular risk factors in a high proportion of them.

Abstract:Objectives: Two parallel pathways have been proposed between the hippocampus and neocortex. Recently, the anterior and posterior hippocampus showed distinct connectivity with different cortical areas in an fMRI study. We investigated whether the two parallel pathways could be confirmed in patients with transient global amnesia (TGA) which is a natural lesion model of a perturbation of the hippocampus. In addition, we evaluated the relationship between the location of the hippocampal lesion and various clinical variables. Methods: A consecutive series of 37 patients were identified from the TGA registry database of Seoul National University Bundang Hospital. Based on the location of the diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) lesion along the anterior-posterior axis of the hippocampus, they were divided into the following three groups: head (n = 15), body (n = 15) or tail (n = 7). To evaluate which cortical regions showed hypoperfusion according to the location of the DWI lesion, their SPECT images were compared between two groups using statistical parametric mapping. We performed hierarchical cluster analysis to group demographic and clinical variables, including the location of the DWI lesion, into clusters. Results: Statistical parametric mapping analyses revealed that more anterior DWI lesions were associated with hypoperfusion of the anterior temporal and frontal areas, whereas more posterior lesions were associated with hypoperfusion of the posterior temporal, parietal, occipital and cerebellar areas. The difference was most prominent between the group of hippocampal lesions on the head and tail. Hierarchical cluster analysis demonstrated that vomiting was related to female gender and hippocampal head lesions, whereas vascular risk factors were related to male gender and hippocampal body lesions. Conclusions: We confirmed the parallel pathways between the hippocampus and neocortex with DWI and SPECT images of patients with TGA. Patients with hippocampal head lesions and body lesions were clustered within different groups of clinical variables.
