Abstract:The biodegradation of organophosphorus compounds (OPs) by phosphotriesterase (PTE) is an efficient and ecofriendly way. However, the low catalytic activity and instability of PTE becomes the key limiting step for the practical application. In this study, a new multimetal-based organic-inorganic self-assembly hybrid system was proposed to ameliorate this situation. A series of characterization methods demonstrated that the synthesized multimetallic PTE hybrid complex (Co/MnHF@PTE) exhibited a hierarchical flower-like structure. The activity recovery and the effective encapsulation yield of the Co/MnHF@PTE was 408% and 84.5%, respectively. The kcat/Km of Co/MnHF@PTE was separately 2.9-, 1.3-, and 2.7-fold higher than MnHF@PTE, CoHF@PTE, and free PTE. The hybrid nanoflowers showed preferable durability, stability, and reusability. When Co/MnHF@PTE was applied in a pump-flow reactor, the degradation percent of methyl parathion could be maintained at more than 93% with the injection of 24 ml of reaction mixture. More importantly, the Co/MnHF@PTE can effectively break P-F or P-S bond of soman (GD) and nerve agent VX to produce non-toxic products through hydroxyl nucleophilic attack. This study provides a feasible method to improve the activity and stability of PTE, promoting the biodegradation of OPs in the environment.
Enhanced Ozonation of Polystyrene Nanoplastics in Water with CeOx@MnOx Catalyst.

Abstract:The nanoplastics released into the environment pose a critical threat to creatures, and thus it is necessary to remove them. However, their natural decomposition usually takes years or even decades, which raises an imminent demand for an efficient removal technology. Herein we report a core-shell CeOx@MnOx catalyst for enhancing ozonation of polystyrene nanoplastics in water. Ozonation achieves 31.67% molecular weight removal of polystyrene nanoplastics in the first 10 min reaction, which is increased to 51.67% in catalytic ozonation by MnOx and further improved to 73.33% in catalytic ozonation via CeOx@MnOx. The remarkable thing is the CeOx@MnOx could achieve almost 96.70% molecular weight removal after 50 min reaction. The specific catalytic mechanism is ozone decomposes into reactive oxygen radicals (center dot OH, center dot O-2(-) and O-1(2)) after capturing electrons from MnOx, improving the polystyrene nanoplastics removal. Meanwhile, the Mn averaged valence state increases, making it harder to donate electrons to ozone. This can be alleviated by encapsulating the CeOx core in the MnOx, enabling electrons replenishment from the CeOx core to the MnOx shell, which is verified by the experiment and density functional theory calculations. The repeated experiment demonstrates the CeOx@MnOx possesses excellent stability, maintaining 95.25-96.70% removal efficiency of polystyrene nano-plastics. This research provides a possibility for the efficient removal of nanoplastics in water.
Enhanced Photoreduction Degradation of Polybromodiphenyl Ethers with Fe3O4-g-C3N4 under Visible Light Irradiation.

Abstract:As typical persistent organic pollutants, polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) have aroused high environmental concern due to their toxicity and recalcitrant degradation. Herein, we report the enhanced photoreduction degradation of polybromodiphenyl ethers with Fe3O4-g-C3N4 under visible light irradiation (>420 nm). A series of high activity photocatalysts Fe3O4-g-C3N4 (named FeOCN-x) have been synthesized by an in situ growth method. The characterization of the prepared FeOCN-x nanocomposites has been examined by SEM, TEM, ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, a vibrating sample magnetometer, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Brunauer-Emmer-Teller surface area analysis. FeOCN-x hybrids all exhibit good magnetic separation properties with the saturation magnetization at 300 K varying from 0.4 to 6.3 emu g-1. Under visible light irradiation, FeOCN-x hybrids show enhanced photocatalytic activity for the debromination of PBDEs compared with g-C3N4. Among all the hybrids, FeOCN-4 with a 4 wt% Fe3O4 content gives the highest reaction rate, which is 6.7 times as high as that in pure g-C3N4. The FeOCN-x nanocomposites not only exhibit good photostability, but could also be easily recovered by magnetism. The results of the kinetic isotope effects (KIE) and the trapping agent experiments show that the rate determining step in the degradation reaction of PBDEs with FeOCN-x is the rate of electron accumulation in the conductive band. A possible photoreductive mechanism has been proposed. This study shows that the easily magnetically separable recycled photocatalyst FeOCN-x, with high visible light activity, could be an excellent candidate for dealing with halogen pollutants.

Abstract:To improve the cathode electro-catalytic degradation performance of electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (EAOP), Pd metal and CeOx co-modified Nano-graphite (Pd/CeOx/Nano-G) composite was synthesized by chemical precipitation and reduction methods, and Pd/CeOx/Nano-G cathode was prepared by a hot-pressing method. The as-prepared composite and electrode were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and scanning electrons microscopy. Results revealed that the mix-crystal structural CeOx (Ce2O3 and CeO2) and Pd0 metal were formed. The cathode was applied for the electro-catalytic degradation of phenol wastewater. The degradation efficiency of phenol by Pd1.0/CeOx5.0/Nano-G cathode reached 99.6% within 120 min degradation, which were higher than that of CeOx5.0/Nano-G and Nano-G cathodes. Both of the Pd metal and CeOx could improve the O2 reduction to H2O2 and promote the H2O2 dissociation to •OH for phenol oxidation. Additionally, the effects of electro-catalytic reaction parameters on the phenol degradation were investigated. The results indicated that Pd/CeOx/Nano-G cathode would have promise for further practical application in organic wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Over the past several years, the manufacturing and dispersal of naturally occurring dyes from various paint and textile companies have placed aquatic environments at an elevated risk of devastation. To address this pollution of the environment, it is imperative to focus on removing these dyes in order to address environmental pollution. Herein, we used hydrothermal technique to synthesize cerium-doped zinc nanoferrites anchored over graphitic carbon nitride (Ce 0.15 Zn 0.85 Fe 2 O 4 /g-CN), a photocatalyst that is both extremely adaptable and exceedingly efficient. The association between the catalytic efficiency and the material properties of the manufactured catalysts was examined with a diverse array of methods of characterization. The photodegradation efficacy of the Ce 0.15 Zn 0.85 Fe 2 O 4 /g-CN photocatalyst was examined using the methyl violet (MV) dye. The Ce 0.15 Zn 0.85 Fe 2 O 4 /g-CN photocatalyst exhibited an exceptional photodegradation of 97.19 % under solar light in comparison to pure ZnFe 2 O 4 (73.81 %) and Ce 0.15 Zn 0.85 Fe 2 O 4 (84.52 %), respectively, under constant conditions of reaction. The Ce 0.15 Zn 0.85 Fe 2 O 4 /g-CN photocatalyst's improvement in photodegradation of the MV dye was attributed to a rise in active sites and an elevation in surface area to 128.67 m 2 /g as a result of g-CN incorporation in the material and was much greater than ZnFe 2 O 4 (76.87 m 2 /g) and Ce 0.15 Zn 0.85 Fe 2 O 4 (92.08 m 2 /g). The reaction circumstances were also adjusted to ascertain the impact of multiple variables. Radical trapping agents' studies were employed to validate reactive oxygen species. The Ce 0.15 Zn 0.85 Fe 2 O 4 /g-CN photostability and recycling were assessed by executing four consecutive investigations under predetermined conditions for the reaction. Eventually, this research will yield an environmentally benign and economically viable photocatalyst for efficiently degrading MV dye in water reservoirs.

An S-scheme CeO2/ foveolate g-C3N4 composite with horseradish peroxidase activity for photo-enzyme synergistic catalytic degradation of phenanthrene

Abstract:Nanozyme technology is a relatively new technology that has shown promising applications in the removal of water pollutants. This study utilized a CeO2/foveolate g-C3N4 (CeO2/FCN) composite with S-scheme heterojunction to achieve efficient removal of Phenanthrene (PHE) through a combination of photocatalytic and enzymatic reactions. The S-scheme heterojunction was effective in inhibiting the recombination of photogenerated electron hole pairs, which promoted the generation of·OH and·O2 -. Additionally, activated H2O2 enables Ce to achieve redox cycle reaction and generate more·OH for catalytic degradation, effectively improving the concentration of active species and promoting the photo-enzyme synergistic catalytic performance. The experimental results showed that PHE degradation efficiency of CeO2/FCN composite could reach 96.6% in 60 min. Furthermore, the photo-enzyme synergistic catalytic mechanism of CeO2/FCN composite and the possible intermediates generated in the degradation process were studied. The highly toxic PHE was converted into non-toxic green degradation products, providing an effective method for the photo-enzyme synergistic catalytic degradation of PAHs.

Abstract:Catalytic oxidation of toxic organic pollutants in water urgently requires improved efficiency for practical application. Here a wrapping-pyrolysis strategy is exploited to convert CoP nanowires-threaded ZIF-8 into CoP nanoparticles-confined nitrogen-doped yolk-shell porous carbon polyhedra, featuring high-density active sites, and high adsorbability, dispersibility and conductivity (4-High). The nanoreactor efficiently activates peroxymonosulfate for bisphenol A (BPA) degradation over a wide pH range and in saline solutions. The apparent kinetic rate constant (18.96 min(-1)) is the highest reported to date and exceeds those of reported catalysts by 1-2 orders of magnitude. Experimental and theoretical evidence reveals that the catalysis occurs at the Co4P4@graphitic nitrogen-doped graphene site to produce surface-bound SO(4)(center dot-)and induce direct electron abstraction for BPA degradation. The high catalytic activity is attributed to the unique yolk-shell structure which concentrates catalytic and adsorptive sites within a confined space, as well as to the porous carbon polyhedron with high dispersibility and conductivity for fast mass and electron transport. Moreover, a fluidized-bed catalytic unit is constructed and enables continuous zero discharge of BPA and easy nanocatalyst recycling. This work will guide "4-High" catalyst design to improve future deep water purification technology.

Abstract:Sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs) are identified by injecting lymphatic tracer dye or radioisotope-labeled particles, or both, around a gastric tumor into the submucosa endoscopically or into the subserosa from the exterior of the stomach. Many reports have suggested the feasibility of the SLN concept in T1 gastric cancer. We consider it reasonable to convert from D1+alpha/beta dissection to D2 dissection when an SLN biopsy is positive and have used this strategy since 2000. Although false-negative SLN biopsy results cannot be avoided, previous studies suggested that the dissection of lymph node stations where SLNs occur (SLN stations) may minimize the possibility of leaving metastases, even micrometastases, behind in cases of a negative SLN biopsy. Since 2003, we have performed limited gastrectomy with dissection of SLN stations when the SLN biopsy was negative. A sleeve gastrectomy was sometimes needed due to the distribution of SLN stations or the location of the tumor. It is preferable to conclude the surgery with endoscopic submucosal dissection in cases of negative SLN biopsy, which is performed laparoscopically. For this final goal, it is mandatory to standardize the method of SLN identification and to increase the sensitivity of intraoperative diagnosis of lymph node metastases.
Amorphous zirconium phosphate as a recycled material anchored cobalt for catalytic degradation of phenacetin via peroxymonosulfate activation

Abstract:Herein, zirconium phosphate as a recycled material was used for the first time to support cobalt (Co-ZrP) serving as a catalyst for activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to remove phenacetin (PNT). It was found that PNT (5 mg L −1 ) was completely eliminated in the Co-ZrP (0.2 g L −1 )/PMS (2 mM) system in an initial pH range of 5 to 7 within 10 min. The pseudo-first-order rate constant of PNT degradation by PMS combined with Co-ZrP was 0.625 min −1 , far faster than those with ZrP (0.0065 min −1 ) and with Co 3 O 4 (0.104 min −1 ). The introduction of HA and HCO 3 − significantly inhibited PNT removal, while the addition of H 2 PO 4 − accelerated PNT elimination in the Co-ZrP/PMS system. Nevertheless, PNT could still be completely removed by Co-ZrP-activated PMS in actual water. Recycling experiments indicated that the degradation efficiency of PNT could reach 98 % after four cycles and calcining Co-ZrP could completely restore its catalytic activity. In addition, effective decomposition of chloramphenicol, bisphenol A, sulfamethazine and rhodamine B was also achieved by Co-ZrP-activated PMS within 15 min. Hence, the combination of Co-ZrP and PMS had great potential in removing organic pollutants from water environment. EPR analysis and quenching tests suggested that the rapid degradation of PNT was mainly ascribed to the generation of •OH and SO 4 •− in the Co-ZrP/PMS system. Based on HPLC-HRMS analysis, the main degradation products were determined and the possible degradation pathways were further proposed.

Abstract:Nanoreactors have been enlightened by enzymes to benefit from particular confinement for purpose of the acceleration of catalytic reactions and rendering them specific. Herein, we have first designed and synthesized the high-efficiency carbon nanotube-stabilized cobalt oxides nanoparticles (CoOx/CNT), via immobilization of CoOx nanoparticles onto carbon nanotube (CNT), for 3-aminophenol (3-AP) degradation via peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. Among them, carbon nanotube is used as a nanoreactor for efficient degradation of 3-AP over CoOx/CNT nanocomposite. The detailed physical characterizations illustrate that CoOx/CNT presented a nanotube-shaped structure, and some CoOx nanoparticles were encapsulated into CNT, and the molar ration of Co and O in CoOx was calculated to be 1:1.006, where CoO1.006 might be the mixture of CoO and Co3O4. The comparison with other carriers (including MoS2, CeO2, ZnO and ZrO2), CoOx/CNT provides the highest 3-AP degradation efficiency, highlighting the key role of CNT, as a nanoreactor, in CoOx/CNT for activating PMS to degrade 3-AP. The super-high catalytic activity of CoOx/CNT nanocomposite in the 3-AP degradation is owing to the specific confinement (encapsulation of some CoOx by carbon nanotubes). It seems the electron transfer from CNT to Co atom surface, enriched its surface electron cloud density, which is favorable for PMS activation. Quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) result have verified that SO4•- and OH• are the primary reactive oxygen species in 3-AP degradation over CoOx/CNT/PMS system. This study provides a new research orientation for the synthesis of efficient and stable carbon nanotube-encapsulated Co-based nanocatalyst for wastewater treatment.
Exploring the photocatalytic breakdown of organic pollutants using intercalated ZnO/SiO 2 nanocomposites

Abstract:The increasing prevalence of organic pollutants in water sources necessitates the development of efficient and cost-effective photocatalysts for their degradation. ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) have been widely studied for their photocatalytic properties; however, their application is hindered by low photocatalytic efficiency and high recombination rates of photogenerated carriers. This manuscript explores the enhanced photocatalytic performance of intercalated ZnO/SiO 2 nanocomposites (NCs), synthesized through a combination of co-precipitation and Stöber methods, as a solution to these challenges. A comprehensive analysis of the structural, optical elemental and Morphological properties of both ZnO NPs and ZnO/SiO 2 NCs was conducted using various characterization techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV–Vis spectrometry and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis. Through, XRD analysis, the calculated crystallite sizes of ZnO NPs and ZnO/SiO2 NCs were found to be 36 nm and 39 nm respectively. TEM images illustrated that the ZnO NPs and ZnO/SiO2 NCs have crystallized in elongated spherical morphology. XPS and FTIR analyses provided the signature band details the presence of Cu and Si in their Zn 2 + and Si4+ oxidation states. The optical bandgap energies were calculated to be 3.38 eV for ZnO NPs and 3.22 eV for ZnO/SiO2 NCs. The enhanced photocatalytic efficiency of the ZnO/SiO 2 NCs achieved an impressive degradation rate of 92 % for Rhodamine B (RhB), compared to a relatively lower rate of 81 % for pure ZnO NPs for the degradation of RhB under visible light due to its lower bandgap, high surface area, and lower electron-hole recombination rate. BET surface area measurements revealed that ZnO nanoparticles have a surface area of 11.234 m 2 /g, while ZnO/SiO2 NCs show 57.118 m 2 /g, highlighting SiO2's enhancement. The NCs demonstrated exceptional reusability for degradation, sustaining high efficiency across multiple cycles. Its ability to scavenge superoxide radicals highlighted the effectiveness of the ZnO/SiO2 NCs in environmental remediation, especially for wastewater treatment.

Atomically dispersed ternary FeCoNb active sites anchored on N-doped honeycomb-like mesoporous carbon for highly catalytic degradation of 4-nitrophenol

Abstract:In the last decades, 4-nitrophenol is regarded as one of highly toxic organic pollutants in industrial wastewater, which attracts great concern to earth sustainability. Herein, atomically dispersed ternary FeCoNb active sites were incorporated into nitrogen-doped honeycomb-like mesoporous carbon (termed FeCoNb/NHC) by a two-step pyrolysis strategy, whose morphology, structure and size were characterized by a set of techniques. Further, the catalytic activity and reusability of the as-prepared FeCoNb/NHC were rigorously examined by using 4-NP catalytic hydrogenation as a proof-of-concept model. The influence of the secondary pyrolysis temperature on the catalytic performance was investigated, combined by illuminating the catalytic mechanism. The resultant catalyst exhibited significantly enhanced catalytic features with a normalized rate constant (kapp) of 1.2 × 104 min-1g-1 and superior stability, surpassing the home-made catalysts in the control groups and earlier research. This study provides some constructive insights for preparation of high-efficiency and cost-effectiveness single-atom nanocatalysts in organic pollutants environmental remediation.
Synergistic effect of nano-floret CeO 2 /ZnO nanocomposite as an efficient photocatalyst for environmental remediation

Abstract:In this study, pure CeO 2 , ZnO, and CeO 2 /ZnO nanocomposite (CZ-NC) were synthesized using solution combustion method using urea as a fuel. The physical properties of the as-prepared samples were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) spectroscopy, photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy , and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis. X-ray diffraction peak confirmed the successful fabrication and structural parameters of the nanomaterials. FTIR and Raman analyses confirmed the presence of Ce–O and Zn–O vibrational modes, respectively. The energy band gap (E g ) of CZ-NC estimated from the UV–vis spectra has narrowed to 1.88 eV, which enhanced the photocatalytic activity. The weak PL intensity peaks implied a lower charge recombination rate with maximum charge separation, facilitating more radical generation. BET analysis has confirmed the nanomaterial's large surface area and mesoporous nature. FESEM was used to investigate the surface morphologies of the nanomaterials, which displayed beautiful florets and sheet morphologies for CZ-NC. The internal structure of the nanomaterials was analyzed using HRTEM . EDAX further confirmed the purity of the nanomaterials, and homogeneous dispersion of elements was observed by EDX mapping. Antibacterial and dye-degradation experiments were conducted to understand the photocatalytic activities of the samples. The antibacterial activity of CZ-NC against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria was superior to that of pure nanoparticles. Methylene blue (MB) dye was used to evaluate the degradation efficiency. The maximum degradation efficiency of 97.10 % was achieved for CZ-NC under a visible light source for 120 min. This enhanced activity can be attributed to the Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP).

Abstract:This paper describes the synthesis of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)-stabilized Pd/Fe nanoparticles and their applications to the dechlorination of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) under controlled laboratorial conditions. For this purpose batch mode experiments were conducted to understand the effects of CMC on the surface characteristics of Pd/Fe nanoparticles, optimum removal of 2,4-D and other surface interactions mechanism. Our experimental results demonstrated considerable enhancements in particle stability and chemical reactivity with the addition of CMC to Pd/Fe nanoparticles. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis indicated that CMC-stabilized Pd/Fe nanoparticles were well dispersed, and nanoparticles remained in suspension for days compared to non-stabilized Pd/Fe nanoparticles precipitated within minutes. The isoelectric point (IEP) of the nanoparticles shifted from pH 6.5 to 2.5, suggesting that CMC-stabilized Pd/Fe nanoparticles were negatively charged over a wider pH range. Our batch experiments demonstrated that CMC-stabilized Pd/Fe nanoparticles (0.6 g Fe L(-1)) were able to remove much higher levels of 2,4-D with only one intermediate 2-chlorophenoxyacetic acid (2-CPA) and the final organic product phenoxyacetic acid (PA), than non-stabilized Pd/Fe nanoparticles or microsized Pd/Fe particles. The removal percentage of 2,4-D increased from 10% to nearly 100% as the reaction pH decreased from 11.5 to 2.5. The optimal CMC/Fe mass ratio for the dechlorination of 2,4-D was determined to be 5/1, and the removal of 2,4-D was evidently hindered by an overdose of CMC.

Abstract:CuO-Co3O4@CeO2 nanoparticles used as a heterogeneous catalyst were prepared via a sol-gel method and characterized by various techniques. For comparison, a series of oxides was investigated for activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) during the degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D). The results indicated that CuO-Co3O4@CeO2 exhibited the highest catalytic performance among the catalysts. Complete degradation of 2,4-D (20 mg/L) was realized within 45 min at 1 mM PMS, CuO-Co3O4@CeO2 loading of 0.07 g/L, and pH of 6. Recycling experiments confirmed that CuO-Co3O4@CeO2 was very stable, and the 2,4-D degradation efficiencies ranged from 100% to 97.5%, decreasing by only 2.5% after the fifth run. The outstanding catalysis of CuO-Co3O4@CeO2 resulted from the synergy of cerium, cobalt, and copper. Electron paramagnetic resonance and radical scavenger experiments confirmed the production of SO4 center dot- and (OH)-O-center dot radicals in the CuO-Co3O4@CeO2/PMS system, which were responsible for efficient decomposition of 2,4-D. Furthermore, the combination of CuO-Co3O4@CeO2 andPMS was applied to treat natural water containing 2,4-D, and a high 2,4-D removal rate was also achieved. Based on these results, it was deduced that CuO-Co3O4@CeO2 can be utilized as a catalyst to activate PMS and destroy organic contaminants in aqueous solution.

Abstract:This study demonstrates the fabrication of nanoceria-immobilized silica nanofibers for efficient water decontamination with easy reuse and regeneration properties. Commercially-available ceria (CeO2) nanoparticles were immobilized on electrospun silica nanofiber mats. Optimal conditions for both oxidation of model trace organic compounds (TrOCs) and hydroxyl-radical formation were determined in batch experiments with ceria nanoparticles. Kinetic experiments showed comparable oxidation rates of positively- and neutrally-charged TrOCs (95 and 98%, respectively) by the nanofiber composites at pH 2 in 0.5 mM H2O2. We demonstrated the reuse properties of the ceria nanofiber composites, finding less than a 15% reduction in oxidation performance after 10 cycles. In addition to this oxidative performance, the electrospun CeO2 nanofiber composites are also applicable for adsorbing the persistent contaminant perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) through electrostatic interactions. Regeneration of the fibers was enabled through a one-hour heat treatment at 550 degrees C in air. Overall, results from this study show that the nanoceria-immobilized silica nanofibers can be used as efficient oxidative and adsorptive media to treat TrOCs in acidic waters, without use of an additional catalyst separation stage from solution.
The Catalytic Role of Superparamagnetic Iron Oxide Nanoparticles as a Support Material for TiO2 and ZnO on Chlorpyrifos Photodegradation in an Aqueous Solution

Abstract:Chlorpyrifos (CP) is a globally used pesticide with acute toxicity. This work studied the photocatalytic degradation of CP using TiO2, ZnO nanoparticles, and nanocomposites of TiO2 and ZnO supported on SPIONs (SPION@SiO2@TiO2 and SPION@SiO2@ZnO). The nanocomposites were synthesized by multi-step incipient wetness impregnation. The effects of the initial pH, catalyst type, and dose were evaluated. The nanocomposites of SPION@SiO2@TiO2 and SPION@SiO2@ZnO showed higher CP photodegradation levels than free nanoparticles, reaching 95.6% and 82.3%, respectively, at pH 7. The findings indicate that iron oxide, as a support material for TiO2 and ZnO, extended absorption edges and delayed the electron–hole recombination of the nanocomposites, improving their photocatalytic efficiency. At the same time, these nanocomposites, especially SPION@SiO2@TiO2, showed efficient degradation of 3,5,6-trichloropyridinol (TCP), one of the final metabolites of CP. The stability and reuse of this nanocomposite were also evaluated, with 74.6% efficiency found after six cycles. Therefore, this nanomaterial represents an eco-friendly, reusable, and effective alternative for the degradation of chlorpyrifos in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Nanoreactors have been enlightened by enzymes to benefit from particular confinement for purpose of the acceleration of catalytic reactions and rendering them specific. Herein, we have first designed and synthesized the high-efficiency carbon nanotube-stabilized cobalt oxides nanoparticles (CoOx/CNT), via immobilization of CoOx nanoparticles onto carbon nanotube (CNT), for 3-aminophenol (3-AP) degradation via peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. Among them, carbon nanotube is used as a nanoreactor for efficient degradation of 3-AP over CoOx/CNT nanocomposite. The detailed physical characterizations illustrate that CoOx/CNT presented a nanotube-shaped structure, and some CoOx nanoparticles were encapsulated into CNT, and the molar ration of Co and O in CoOx was calculated to be 1:1.006, where CoO1.006 might be the mixture of CoO and Co3O4. The comparison with other carriers (including MoS2, CeO2, ZnO and ZrO2), CoOx/CNT provides the highest 3-AP degradation efficiency, highlighting the key role of CNT, as a nanoreactor, in CoOx/CNT for activating PMS to degrade 3-AP. The super-high catalytic activity of CoOx/CNT nanocomposite in the 3-AP degradation is owing to the specific confinement (encapsulation of some CoOx by carbon nanotubes). It seems the electron transfer from CNT to Co atom surface, enriched its surface electron cloud density, which is favorable for PMS activation. Quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) result have verified that SO4•- and OH• are the primary reactive oxygen species in 3-AP degradation over CoOx/CNT/PMS system. This study provides a new research orientation for the synthesis of efficient and stable carbon nanotube-encapsulated Co-based nanocatalyst for wastewater treatment.

Abstract:A series of Co(II)-CeO2 mixed metal oxides were synthesized by a facile hydrothermal-calcination procedure for activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and degrading toxic and difficult biodegradable organics. Co(II)-CeO2 showed excellent degradation performance toward rhodamine B (RhB), toluidine blue, methylene blue and diclofenac. RhB is a refractory organic contaminant, and ecotoxicological evaluation unraveled its harmfulness to the biosphere. RhB was selected as the model pollutant to investigate catalytic mechanisms. Parameters affecting degradation performance were profoundly investigated, including Co:Ce feed ratio, initial pH, PMS dosage, catalyst dosage, RhB concentration, coexisting ions and reaction temperature. Reaction mechanisms were proposed based on density functional theory calculations and identifications of reactive oxygen species. Improvements have been achieved in seven aspects compared to previous studies, including 100% degradation ratio in both real water samples and each reuse of the catalyst, ultrafast degradation rate, cost-effectiveness of the catalyst, toxicity-attenuation provided by the developed degradation method, high degree of mineralization for the model pollutant, negligible leaching of active sites, and the enhancement of catalytic performance by utilizing trace leached cobalt, endowing the technique with broad applicability and prospect.
