Abstract:A 35-cm long sediment core - retrieved from Erhai Lake - was analyzed for Pb isotope ratios (207Pb/206Pb and 208Pb/206Pb) and trace metal concentrations (Cr, Cu, Ni, Hg, Pb and Zn) to gain an understanding of atmospheric trace metal pollution over the last 150years in Southwest China. Core chronology was established by using the 210Pb and 137Cs dating techniques. Principal component analysis (PCA) and enrichment factors (EFs) were used to differentiate between the anthropogenic and detrital origins of the metals. The results indicate that the elements Hg, Pb and Zn in the sediment of Erhai Lake were affected by anthropogenic contamination. During the 1860s-1890CE, decreasing EFs of Hg, Pb and Zn and Pb isotope ratios suggest improving atmospheric quality, which may relate to the shrinking metallurgy activities during the late Qing Dynasty in Southwest China. Pollution levels of the metals remained stable during 1890–1960CE, whereas they increased after 1960CE, especially since the 1980CE, suggesting degradation of the regional atmospheric environment with the economic development after the reform and opening in the late 1970s. Pb isotopes and the PCA reveal that the atmospheric Pb is mainly from regional ore mining and smelting, which is also the dominant source of atmospheric Hg and Zn pollution in Southwest China. Our study also shows that the use of a pre-industrial background may underestimate the trace metal pollution in Erhai Lake due to the influence of early smelting activities.

Abstract:Atmospheric lead (Pb) pollution during the last century in central Yunnan province, one of the largest non-ferrous metal production centers in China, was reconstructed using sediment cores collected from Fuxian and Qingshui Lakes. Lead concentrations and isotopic ratios ( 207 Pb/ 206 Pb and 208 Pb/ 206 Pb) were measured in sediment cores from both lakes. The operationally defined chemical fractions of Pb in sediment core from Fuxian Lake were determined by the optimized BCR procedure. The chronology of the cores was reconstructed using 210 Pb and 137 Cs dating methods. Similar three-phase variations in isotopic ratios and enrichment factors of Pb were observed in the sediment cores from both lakes. Before the 1950s, the sediment data showed low 207 Pb/ 206 Pb and 208 Pb/ 206 Pb ratios and enrichment factors (EFs = ~1), indicating that the sedimentary Pb was predominantly of lithogenic origin. However, these indices were increased gradually between the 1950s and the mid-1980s, implying an atmospheric Pb deposition. The EFs and isotopic ratios of Pb reached their peak during recent years, indicating aggravating atmospheric Pb pollution. The average anthropogenic Pb fluxes since the mid-1980s were estimated to be 0.032 and 0.053 g m −2 year −1 recorded in Fuxian and Qingshui cores, respectively. The anthropogenic Pb was primarily concentrated in the reducible fraction. Combining the results of Pb isotopic compositions and chemical speciations in the sediment cores and in potential sources, we deduced that recent aggravating atmospheric Pb pollution in central Yunnan province should primarily be attributed to regional emissions from non-ferrous metal production industries.

Abstract:Long-term trends of sediment compositions are important for assessing the impact of human activities on the sediment and protecting the sediment environment. In this study, based on the contents of heavy metals and the Pb isotope ratios in lake sediments, atmospheric dustfall and soil in Yixing, China, the representative heavy metals (Zn, Pb, Cr and Cd) in lake sediments from western Taihu Lake were studied. The evolution history of heavy metals in the local environment was constructed for the past 100 years. From 1892 to the 1990s, the anthropogenic fluxes of the representative heavy metals were negligible, indicating minimal anthropogenic emissions of heavy metals. Since the 1990s, anthropogenic fluxes of the representative heavy metals began to increase, concurrent with the economic growth and development in the western Taihu Lake Basin after the Chinese economic reform. The maximum flux percentage of the heavy metals in the sediments, caused by human activities, is 23.0% for Zn, 31.6% for Pb, 39.5% for Cr and 85.3% for Cd, indicating that most of the Cd comes from human activities. The Cd content in the western Taihu Lake Basin was significantly higher than that in the other areas, and the rapid development of the industry in the western Taihu Lake Basin and ceramics in Yixing led to the enrichment of heavy metals in local sediments. Since the 21st century, measures have been taken to control the pollution of heavy metals, including the increase in local government attention and the deployment of environmental monitoring technology. However, heavy metal content remains high, and the Pb content is still increasing. The ratios of Pb isotopes show that the main sources of heavy metals in the western Taihu Lake sediments, the local soil of Yixing and the atmospheric dustfall are coal combustion, leaded gasoline combustion, industrial wastewater and domestic sewage.
Anthropogenic, Detritic and Atmospheric Soil-Derived Sources of Lead in an Alpine Poor Fen in Northeast China

Abstract:Ombrotrophic bogs are faithful archive of atmospheric metal deposition, but the potential for fens to reconstruct environmental change is often underestimated. In this study, some new data on the Pb depositional history in northeast China were provided using two 210Pb-dated peat sequences from a poor fen in the Fenghuang Mountain of Heilongjiang province. Anthropogenic, detritic and atmospheric soil sources were discriminated using a two-step sequential digestion (weak acid leaching to liberate mobile Pb which is often regarded as anthropogenic Pb, especially for recent samples) and a ratio of unsupported 210Pb and supported 210Pb with the logic of that the 214Pb mainly represents the residual detritus (constant throughout the core) and the unsupported 210Pb arises from atmospheric fallout. A higher 210Pb/214Pb suggests more contributions from atmospheric deposition to the Pb content in the peat, and a ratio of 10 was defined to indicate the boundary between detritic input and atmospheric deposition. The detritic Pb was estimated to be 10–13 mg·kg−1, the anthropogenic Pb ranged from 10–80 mg·kg−1, and the atmospheric soil-derived Pb ranged from < 5 mg·kg−1 to 30 mg·kg−1. The history of anthropogenic Pb pollution over the last 150 years was reconstructed, and the calculated Pb deposition rate (AR Pb) ranged from 5 to 56 mg·m−2·yr−1. Using Ti as a reliable reference, the enrichment factor of Pb (EF Pb) relative to the upper continental crust was calculated. Both AR Pb and EF Pb increased with time, especially after the foundation of the People’s Republic of China. This is consistent with increasing industrialization and coal burning in the last 60 years in northeast China. The present record of anthropogenic Pb deposition was consistent with the previous reports and an increasing trend of environmental pollution due to anthropogenic activities, in contrasts to Europe and North America which have experienced a major environmental cleanup. For the first time, this work estimates atmospheric Pb deposition via a minerotrophic peat core in China. This will enhance the use of peat archives for studies of environmental change.

Abstract:Soil lead (Pb) pollution is wide spread in China. The Chinese government is taking ambitious actions to tackle the soil pollution issue, with the latest soil quality standards and the Soil Pollution Prevention and Remediation Law enacted in 2018. This study assesses the spatio-temporal distribution, pollution levels, major sources and health risks of Pb in surface soils in China in the past three decades (1990–2017). Traffic emissions (mainly leaded gasoline), mining, smelting, and e-waste recycling were main contributors to soil Pb pollution and pose a risk to food security and human health. The weighted arithmetic mean of Pb concentrations was 35.9 ± 0.21 mg/kg. Southern China suffered from severer soil Pb pollution with hotspots of the Pearl River Delta, Yangtze River Delta, Shaanxi and Hunan. The average soil Pb concentration increased marginally during 1990–2001 due to increased industrial and transportation activities; afterwards, it decreased by ∼30% during 2001–2013, reflecting the effectiveness of the ban on leaded gasoline in 2000. However, there was a slight increase in recent years. Therefore, it is critical to establish a comprehensive evaluation and monitoring system, strengthen pollution source control, properly manage the environmental and health risks at severely contaminated sites, and conduct green and sustainable remediation.

Abstract:Mercury (Hg), Lead (Pb) and its stable isotopes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were analyzed in a sediment box core obtained from the central Bohai Sea (BS) of northern China to trace anthropogenic input for the past century. The records of Hg, PAHs and Pb isotopic ratios revealed that the BS was clearly impacted by human activities from the early 1930s to the middle 1940s, possibly related to the acceleration of heavy industrialization in northeast China. Under rapid development and significant increase in fossil fuel consumption, pressure on the BS environment had obviously increased, as revealed by increasing concentrations of Hg, Pb, and PAHs from the early 1960s to late 1990s, with a synchronous decrease of 206Pb/207Pb isotopic ratios. The evolving trends in 206Pb/207Pb ratio, Hg, and PAHs were found to be decoupled since the early 2000s, possibly because of the significant improvement in environmental protection. Depositional records of Pb isotopic ratios with PAH compositions indicate a high-resolution sediment footprint of anthropogenic energy-consumption-based impacts around the BS over the past century, especially with the transformed emission sources from the leaded gasoline and combustion of coal before the 2000s to coal combustion and nonferrous metal smelting thereafter. The decreased records of sedimentary Pb have been widely found by around the world (e.g. North America, Southeast Asia and West Europe) after the ban on the leaded gasoline. However, this trend in China is reverse by the phasing out of leaded gasoline since the 2000s, possibly due to the recent accelerating development of nonferrous metal smelting and the continued increase in coal-dominated energy consumption.

Abstract:Atmospheric pollution, one of the leading environmental problems in South and East Asia, and its impact on the terrestrial environmental quality remain poorly understood particularly in alpine areas where both historical and present-day mining and smelting operations might leave an imprint. Here, we reconstructed atmospheric trace metals pollution during the past century using core sediments from a large and deep alpine lake in Southwest China. The implication of in lake and/or in watershed sediment focusing in pollution quantification is discussed by analyzing 15 sediment cores. Factor analysis and enrichment factor indicated Cd, Pb and Sb as the typical pollutants. Distinct peaks of Pb and Sb pollution were observed around the 1920s, but little Pb pollution was detected in recent decades, different from other studies in similar regions. Cadmium pollution was observed until the mid-1980s synchronized with Sb. The distinctive variations in atmospheric trace metal pollution process in Southwest China highlight the regional and sub-regional sources of metal pollutants, which should be primarily attributed to non-ferrous metal smelting emissions. Both natural and anthropogenic metals showed wide concentration ranges though exhibited similar temporal trends in the 15 cores. Spatial variations of anthropogenic metals were influenced by the in-watershed pollutants remobilization, whereas, natural metals were regulated by the detrital materials in the sub-basin. In-lake sediment focusing had little influence on the spatial distributions of all metals, different from the traditional sediment focusing pattern observed in small lakes. Anthropogenic Cd accumulation in sediments ranged from 1.5 to 10.1mgm−2 in a specific core with an average of 6.5mgm−2 for the entire lake, highlighting that a reliable whole-lake pollutant budget requires an analysis of multiple cores. Our study suggests that the management of aquatic ecosystem health should take the remobilization of in-watershed stored pollutants into consideration especially under increasing human perturbation.
Anthropogenically-induced atmospheric Pb cycle in low-latitude Asia since the Industrial Revolution recorded by high-resolution stalagmites

Abstract:The vigorous convective circulation in the low-latitude regions plays an important role in the global lead (Pb) cycle in the context of growing atmospheric Pb pollution. However, the brevity of reconstructions of regional Pb pollution limits our understanding of the low-latitude Pb cycle. Here, we presented continuous stalagmite-based Pb records from Klang (KL) cave in the Thai-Malay peninsula, and complementary stalagmite-based Pb records from Xianrenyan (XRY) cave in upwind region to explore the combined effects of atmospheric circulations and anthropogenic Pb emissions on the regional Pb cycle in the low-latitude regions. The analysis suggests that the XRY records reflect regional Pb pollutions in southern China, while the KL records could represent regional Pb recycling in low-latitude Asia, with the Pb pollutants coming from local and upwind territories (e.g., China, India). Moreover, the Pb variations in peninsular Thailand are significantly influenced by the East Asian Winter Monsoon (EAWM) strength with high (low) amount of Pb pollutants from the upwind territories transported to the study area during the strong (weak) EAWM. However, by comparing KL records with XRY records and other existing geological and meteorological records, we found the EAWM-induced Pb variations in the late 20th century were overwhelmed by unprecedented industry-derived Pb emissions from eastern China. Our findings suggest the ever-increasing anthropogenic emission could surpass the atmospheric circulation controls on the regional Pb cycle, offering a new perspective on understanding the relative influence of natural and anthropogenic forcing.

Abstract:The widespread "pertinacious illness" for environmental management soil contamination by toxic metals has inevitably led to announcement of gradual adjustment for the local government to curb the notorious pollution. An extensive survey was conducted in Changxing County, Zhejiang Province, to investigate the contents of cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), lead (Pb), and copper (Cu) and characterize the spatial-temporal change pattern to elucidate the current state and performance of policy adjustment. Geostatistic methods were applied in the mapping and characterizing processes to assess the concentrations of heavy metals at unsampled sites. Enrichment factor analysis indicated obvious Cd and As enrichment in the west and northwest of the county. Ordinary kriging interpolation combined with semivariogram revealed that the four heavy metals possessed distinct spatial distribution patterns. However, the distribution patterns for the elevated Cd and Pb concentrations exhibited a similar geographic drift, corresponding primarily to industrial distribution. Compared with the investigation findings in 2003, the results indicated an uptrend of Cd and As and downtrend of Cu, while Pb was a mixture of increase and decrease. However, strengthened actions aimed at restraining heavy metal contamination are still needed to establish a mechanism to secure residents' health and livelihood.
Reconstruction of historical lead contamination and sources in Lake Hailing, Eastern China: a Pb isotope study

Abstract:The history records of lead and its stable isotopic ratios were determined in a sediment core to receive anthropogenic impacts on the Lake Hailing in eastern China. The sediment core was dated based on 210Pb, 137Cs, and 239+240Pu. The historical changes of Pb/Al and Pb isotope ratios showed increasing trend upward throughout the core, suggesting changes in energy usage and correlating closely with the experience of a rapid economic and industrial development of the catchment, Linyi City, in eastern China. Based on the mixing end member model of Pb isotope ratios, coal combustion emission dominated anthropogenic Pb sources in the half part of the century contributing 13 to 43 % of total Pb in sediment. Moreover, contributions of chemical and organic fertilizer were 1–13 and 5–14 %, respectively. In contrast, the contribution of leaded gasoline was low than 8 %. The results indicated that historical records of Pb contamination predominantly sourced from coal combustion and chemical and organic fertilizer in the catchment. In addition, an increase of coal combustion source and fertilizers was found throughout the sediment core, whereas the contribution of leaded gasoline had declined after 2000s, which is attributed to the phaseout of leaded gasoline in China.

Abstract:China is one of the fastest-growing economies of the late 20th and early 21st centuries, and heavy metal emissions have increased in parallel with rapid industrialization and urbanization. Over the last decade, several studies of geochemical records from peat have reconstructed changes in atmospheric metal pollution in China. We review the peat records that detail the history of atmospheric metal pollution over the last two centuries in NE China. The ecological risk (ER) of accumulated metals and their potential eco-toxicological effects, through threshold and probable effect concentrations (TEC and PEC), are also evaluated. Peat records of metals show an increase of pollution loads in the environment over the pre-industrial level during the past two centuries, with an unprecedented increase in China over the last 60 years. There is generally good agreement between geochemical peat records from NE China and others records elsewhere in China. However, some discrepancies are observed especially with Hg records from lake sediments. These discrepancies could be explained by several factors, including post-depositional processes or uncertainties arising from dating methods. The ecological risk of heavy metals is found to be relatively weak in the remote and high-altitude environment in NE China. Although, most metals are under the TEC, Pb concentrations usually surpass it and are getting close to the PEC which indicates increasing ecological risks. Some areas of improvement have been highlighted such as the need for more long-term studies on atmospheric metals and a greater number of Pb isotopes records to better capture the long history of human activity and the spatial variability in metal deposition of the region.
A Historical Record of Trace Metal Deposition in Northeastern Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau for the Last Two Centuries

Abstract:Owing to rapid socio-economic development in China, trace metal emissions have increased and lakes even in remote areas have experienced marked changes in the last century. However, there are limited studies revealing long-term trends, anthropogenic fluxes, and spatial characteristics of trace metals in lakes. In this study, we present a geochemical record from Lake Qinghai in the northeastern Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and reconstruct trace metal pollution history during the last two centuries. The lacustrine sediment core was dated by 137Cs and 210Pb, and sediments deposited prior to the 1850s were selected as the pre-industrial background. Factor analysis and enrichment factor indicated Cr, Cu, and Ni generally originated from natural sources, while Cd, Pb, and Zn have been influenced by human contamination since the mid-1980s. The anthropogenic Cd mainly derived from non-ferrous metal smelting in Gansu Province, and fluxes to Lake Qinghai sharply increased after the mid-1980s. The metal reconstruction is similar to other lake sediment records from China and corresponds well with rapid economic development in China. The spatial pattern of anthropogenic Cd fluxes to lakes is primarily attributed to regional industrial emission, phosphate fertilizers, and manure applied in agriculture.

Abstract:Traditionally, lead (Pb) in rice grains has been thought to be mostly derived from soil, and the contribution of aerosol Pb remains so far unknown. Based on a meta-analysis, we surprisingly found rice Pb content decreased proportionally with urban atmospheric Pb concentrations in major rice-growing provinces in China during 2001-2015, suggestive of the strong influence of long-range Pb transport on agricultural environment. With the combination of field survey, field experiment, as well as a predictive model, we confirmed high contribution of atmospheric exposure to rice grain Pb in China. We for the first time developed a predictive mathematical model which revealed that aerosol Pb accumulation ratios of rice grains were related to both grain weight and accumulation types. We successfully predicted the national-scale rice Pb in China on the basis of the public data of urban PM2.5 from 19 rice-growing provinces and proposed a seasonal atmospheric Pb limit of 0.20 mu g m(-3) based on the safe threshold level of Pb in rice, which was much lower than the current limit of 1 mu g m(-3) set in China.
Soil lead distribution characteristics and source identification in Hanyuan, upstream of Yangtze River, China

Abstract:In order to ascertain the pollution status, chemical speciation, isotope compositions, and sources of soil lead in Hanyuan, upstream of Yangtze River in China was studied. The content of Pb in soil was determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), the speciation of soil Pb was analyzed by BCR, and lead isotope composition in the samples was determined by MC-ICP-MS. The results show that the average concentration of Pb in surface soils was 478.09 mg/kg, which is 15.94 times the background value of soil in Sichuan Province (30.00mg/kg). Pb in the soil of the living area was more in the form of extractable form (Pbextractable=62.38–84.31%), while Pb in the soil of mining area is more in the form of residue (Pbresidue =57.35–60.12%). The natural end-member including bedrock and ore possessed 208Pb/207Pb ratios of 2.444 and 2.453 and 206Pb/207Pb ratios of 1.169 and 1.160, respectively. Anthropogenic end-members including car exhaust and cement plant fly ash possessed 208Pb/207Pb ratios of 2.486 and 2.501, and 206Pb/207Pb ratios of 1.184 and 1.197, respectively. The ratios of 208Pb/207Pb and 206Pb/207Pb for surface soil ranged from 2.448–2.491 and 1.154–1.193, respectively, which are close to the anthropogenic end-members, indicating human activities were the main source of Pb pollution.

Anthropogenic impacts in the Changbai Mountain region of NE China over the last 150 years: geochemical records of peat and altitude effects

Abstract:Geochemical records from peatlands are important tools for the interpretation of environmental signals preserved in the peat and the understanding anthropogenic impacts on remote mountain regions. In this paper, six 210Pb-dated peat cores located at 500-1900 m above sea level (asl) in the Changbai Mountains were used to reconstruct the pollution history over the past 150 years in northeastern (NE) China. The cores physicochemical parameters and 10 key chemical elements were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES). Results from loss on ignition (LOI), total organic carbon (TOC), and lithogenic element (Ti, Fe, and Mn) analysis show that the peatlands (Ch, Yc1 and Jb) over 900 m asl are ombrotrophic and the lower altitude peatlands (Dng, Jc, and Ha) are minerotrophic. There is a decreasing trend of trace element distribution with the altitude, mainly due to the local source input. The content of the magnetic particles and trace elements (Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn) as well as their accumulation rates document 150 years of pollution history in the Changbai Mountain region. There is a significant elevated pattern of the geochemical records after the New China, which might mark the start date of Anthropocene since the 1950s in this region. The peatlands at the lower altitude (i.e., Dng and Ha) record the earliest fingerprints of metal contamination due to the starting period of massive reclaiming and immigrating in the Changbai Mountain region. The major increase of trace elements since the 1980s probably suggests a significant deterioration of the local environment due to the fast industrial and urbanization development after the Reform and Opening up in China.
Spatio-temporal variation and source changes of potentially toxic elements in soil on a typical plain of the Yangtze River Delta, China (2002–2012)

Abstract:The spatio-temporal variation and temporal changes in the sources of Cr, Pb, Cd, Hg, and As in soil on the Hangzhou–Jiaxing–Huzhou (H-J-H) Plain were analysed based on 4,359 soil samples collected in 2002 and 2012. Geostatistical and spatial analysis methods were used to explore the spatio-temporal variation in the pollution levels and 'pollution hotspots' for potentially toxic elements (PTEs), and the positive matrix factor model was used to quantitatively appoint and analyse temporal changes in PTE sources. The results indicated that the PTE content in most parts of the survey area were at a safe level in both 2002 and 2012, but a clearly upward trend was detected for Cr, Pb, and Cd. Moreover the pollution index for Cr, Pb, Cd, and the Nemerow composite pollution index increased in the west but decreased in the east of the H-J-H Plain from 2002 to 2012. The pollution index for Hg and As presented the opposite spatial pattern. It is obvious that there have been changes in the spatial pattern of pollution hotspots for PTEs on the H-J-H Plain from 2002 to 2012. Four sources of PTEs in soil were quantitatively appointed. In 2002, 2012, the dominant sources of Cr, Cd, Hg, and As were soil parent materials, industrial activities, atmospheric deposition and agricultural inputs, respectively. The dominant source of Pb in the soil changed from traffic emissions to soil parent materials, indicating the benefit of banning the use of leaded gasoline in China. This study highlights the importance of monitoring soil environmental quality and highlights the significance of spatio-temporal variation in PTEs in suburban zones or transitional areas undergoing rapid industrialization and urbanization, like the H-J-H Plain.

Abstract:Multiple-year inventory of atmospheric emissions of cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), and lead (Pb) from coal burning in China have been established for the period 1980–2008 by using best available emission factors and annual activity data which are specified by different sub-categories of combustion facilities, coal types, and air pollution control devices. Our results show that the total emissions of Cd, Cr, and Pb have rapidly increased from 31.14 t, 1019.07 t, and 2671.73 t in 1980 to 261.52 t, 8593.35 t, and 12 561.77 t in 2008, respectively. The industrial sector ranks as the leading source, contributing ∼88.3%, ∼86.7%, and ∼81.8% of the total Cd, Cr, and Pb emissions, respectively. Remarkably uneven spatial allocation features are observed. The emissions are primarily concentrated in the provinces of the northern and eastern region of China owing to the dramatic difference in coal use by the industrial and power sectors. Monthly temporal emission profiles for different sectors are established by using indexes such as monthly thermal electricity generation, monthly gross industrial output values and monthly average ambient temperature. For the power plants, there are two peaks during cold and hot season while for the industrial sector, emissions are most substantial in the summer and autumn season. Further, uncertainties in the bottom-up inventories are quantified by Monte Carlo simulation, and the overall uncertainties are demonstrated as −16% to 45% for Cd, −13% to 20% for Cr, and −21% to 48% for Pb, respectively. To better understand the emissions of these metals and to adopt effective measures to prevent poisoning, more specific data collection and analysis are necessary.
Lead isotopes in the Central Yellow Sea Mud: Evidence of atmospheric deposition and its implication for regional energy consumption shift

Abstract:Anthropogenic activities have increased lead (Pb) emissions and impacted their spatiotemporal distributions in coastal seas. To quantify the increasing variability of Pb and identify the specific origins and their corresponding magnitudes, Pb and Pb isotopes are investigated in a well-placed sediment core covering the period of 1928–2008 in the Central Yellow Sea Mud (CYSM). The concentration of Pb varied from 27.17 μg/g to 37.30 μg/g upwardly along the core, with pronounced anthropogenic disturbance since the late 1960s. The Pb input history of the CYSM experienced five stages according to industrialization levels and Pb contamination, with relative pristine stages from 1928 to 1969 and human activity-impacted stages from 1969 to 2008. The 206Pb/207Pb ratio demonstrated an overall decreasing profile while the 208Pb/206Pb ratio displayed the reverse trend upwardly along the core, possibly due to the atmospheric delivery of anthropogenic Pb emissions from northern China. Furthermore, 208Pb/206Pb vs. 206Pb/207Pb shows certain linearity between natural sediment sources and anthropogenic emissions of Pb (atmospheric deposition); thus, atmospheric inputs account for 34–43% of the Pb in the sediment since Pb enrichment using the two-endmember mixing model. Moreover, the steep decrease in 206Pb/207Pb and rapid increase in 208Pb/206Pb since the 1970s suggest the introduction of leaded gasoline and the increasing proportionate consumption of gasoline relative to total energy consumption. The continuously decreasing 206Pb/207Pb ratio and increasing 208Pb/206Pb ratio since 2000 are the combined results of coal consumption, nonferrous smelting, and residual Pb contamination from leaded gasoline, which is quite distinctive from cases in North America and Europe. The relatively high 206Pb/207Pb and low 208Pb/206Pb ratios before 1969 represent the natural Pb isotopic signatures. Hence, Pb input is significantly affected by regional energy consumption and restructuring, and the Pb isotopic ratios may be a potential proxy for the shift in energy consumption.

Abstract:The rapid economic development in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD), China in the last three decades has had a significant impact on the environment of the East China Sea (ECS). Lead isotopic compositions of a 210Pb dated sediment core collected from the coastal ECS adjacent to the Yangtze River Estuary were analyzed to track the Pb pollution in the region. The baseline Pb concentration in the coastal ECS sediments before the industrialization in China was 32μgg−1, and the corresponding 206Pb/207Pb ratio was 1.195. The high-resolution profiles of Pb flux and 206Pb/207Pb ratios had close relationships with the economic development and the history of the use of leaded gasoline in China, and they were clearly different from those of most European countries and United States.
One Century Sedimentary Record of Lead and Zinc Pollution in Yangzong Lake, a Highland Lake in Southwestern China

Abstract:Reconstruction of trace metal pollution histories and sources may help us to regulate current pollutant discharge. This is especially important for the highland lakes in southwestern China, which are facing trace metals pollution. We present sedimentary records of 11 metals accumulated in Yangzong Lake since the 1870's, a highland lake in southwestern China. Pollution of lead and zinc (Pb and Zn) was differentiated based on principal component analysis, geochemical normalization, and lead isotope ratios. Nearly all the metals as well as grain size composition show generally constant values before the mid-1980's, denoting stable detrital input in the catchment. Fluctuations in the concentrations of the metals as well as grain size composition since the mid-1980's indicate an increase in soil erosion with strengthened human disturbance in the catchment. After geochemical normalization, Pb and Zn showed constant values before 1990 AD and then a gradual increase in parallel with the variations in 208Pb/206Pb and 207Pb/206Pb ratios, indicating that Pb and Zn pollution occurred. Combining the data of 208Pb/206Pb and 207Pb/206Pb ratios in the sediments of Yangzong Lake, leaded gasoline, Pb-Zn ore and coal, and consumption or production historical trends, we deduced that the enhanced Pb and Zn pollution in Yangzong Lake is caused primarily by ore mining and refining.
