Abstract:OBJECTIVES:To compare the predictive ability of six anthropometric indices for identification of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and to determine their optimal cut-off points among Chinese adults.METHODS:A total of 59,029 participants were enrolled. Body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), a body shape index (ABSI), body roundness index (BRI), and conicity index (CI) were measured. Receiver-operating characteristic curves analyses were performed to determine the discriminatory power of these indices for the identification of cardiometabolic risks and diagnosis of MetS. The differences in the area under the curve (AUC) values among the indices were evaluated. The Youden index was used to determine the optimal cut-off points.RESULTS:WHtR and BRI exhibited the highest AUC values for identifying MetS and most cardiometabolic risk factors in both sexes, whereas ABSI showed the lowest AUC value. The general optimal cut-off points in women were 23.03 kg/m2 for BMI, 77.25 cm for WC, 0.490 for WHtR, and 3.179 for BRI; those in men were 24.64 kg/m2 for BMI, 87.25 cm for WC, 0.510 for WHtR, and 3.547 for BRI. The AUC values and cut-off points of the indices were also analyzed in each age and BMI category.CONCLUSIONS:In Chinese adults, WHtR and BRI showed a superior predictive power for MetS in both sexes, which can be used as simple and effective screening tools for cardiometabolic risks and MetS in clinical practice.
Effectiveness of body roundness index in predicting metabolic syndrome: A systematic review and meta‐analysis

Abstract:<p>Body roundness index (BRI) is a new anthropometric index developed to predict both body fat and the percentage of visceral adipose tissue. Our aim was to investigate whether BRI is superior to traditional anthropometric indices in predicting metabolic syndrome (MetS). This systematic review and meta‐analysis was conducted using Pubmed, Scopus and Web of Sciences databases. The estimated pooled areas under curve (AUCs) for BRI predicting MetS was higher than body mass index (BMI), waist‐to‐hip ratio (WHR), body shape index (ABSI) and body adiposity index (BAI), similar to waist circumference (WC) and lower than waist‐to‐height ratio (WHtR). However, the difference between BRI and BMI, WC and WHtR predicting MetS was statistically non‐significant. Similar results were found with the summary receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC‐SROC). In addition, the non‐Chinese population had pooled AUCs greater than the Chinese population for all indices. Pooled ORs showed that BRI is associated with an increased MetS risk. In conclusion, BRI had good discriminatory power for MetS in adults of both sexes from diverse populations (AUC > 0.7; AUC‐SROC>0.7). However, WC and WHtR offer the best performance when screening for MetS, and non‐significant differences were found with BRI. In contrast, BRI was superior to BMI, WHR, ABSI and BAI in predicting MetS.</p>

Comparison of anthropometric indices for predicting the risk of metabolic syndrome in older adults

Abstract:Background. The prevalence of obesity and metabolic syndrome (MetS) is increasing, worldwide. Using a simple, efficient and reliable tool for predicting MetS is an essential approach in preventive health programs. The aim of this study was to compare the different anthropometric indices in predicting metabolic syndrome in older adults.Methods. This cross-sectional study is a part of the Amirkola Health and Ageing cohort Project (2011-2016). Of total, 1,488 older people aged 60-92 years were entered to the study. Medical and personal information of participants were collected by a questionnaire. After measuring the height, weight, waist circumference, hip circumference and neck circumference, body mass index, waist to hip ratio, waist to height ratio, abdominal volume index and conicity index were calculated. Independent t-test, chi-square and ROC curve were used to analyze the data.Results. Based on ATPIII-2005 diagnostic criteria, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome was 71.57%.The prevalence in female was higher than male. All of examined anthropometric indices, except neck circumference (p = 0.10), showed a significant difference in people with MetS compared to the individuals without metabolic syndrome (p<0.001). Waist to height ratio showed the largest area under the curve for predicting MetS (0.786; 95% CI: 0.76-0.81) followed by BMI (0.746; 95% CI: 0.71-0.77), AVI (0.745; 95% CI: 0.71-0.77), and waist circumference (0.743; 95% CI: 0.71-0.77).Conclusion. Waist to height ratio was the best predictor of MetS in older adults.

Abstract:Background The apoB/apoA1 ratio has been reported to be associated with the metabolic syndrome (MetS), and it may be a more convenient biomarker in MetS predicting. However, whether apoB/apoA1 ratio is a better indicator of metabolic syndrome than other biomarkers and what is the optimal cut-off value of apoB/apoA1 ratio as an indicator of metabolic syndrome in Chinese population remain unknown. Thus, we carried out the current study to assess the predictive value of apoB/apoA1 ratio and determine the optimal cut-off value of apoB/apoA1 ratio for diagnosing MetS in a Chinese population. Method We selected 1,855 subjects with MetS and 6,265 individuals without MetS based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria from the China Health Nutrition Survey (CHNS) in 2009. MetS was identified based on the diagnostic criteria of International Diabetes Federation (2005). Logistic regression was used to estimate the association between the apoB/apoA1 ratio and risk of MetS, and receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve analysis was performed to test the predictive value of apoB/apoA1 ratio and calculate the appropriate cut-off value. Results Compared with the lowest quartile of apoB/apoA1 ratio, subjects in the fourth quartile had a higher risk of MetS in both men [odds ratio (OR) = 2.64, 95% confidence interval (CI) =1.82-3.83] and women (OR = 5.18, 95% CI = 3.87-6.92) after adjustment for potential confounders. The optimal cut-off value of apoB/apoA1 ratio for MetS detection was 0.85 in men and 0.80 in women. Comparisons of ROC curves indicated that apoB/apoA1 ratio was better than traditional biomarkers in predicting MetS. Conclusion Our results suggest that, apoB/apoA1 ratio has a promising predictive effectiveness in detection of MetS. An apoB/apoA1 ratio higher than 0.85 in men and 0.80 in women may be a promising and convenient marker of MetS.

Abstract:Summary 1. Treatment with cortisone prevented the early reaction of prostration and death produced by an intravenous injection of endotoxin in mature rabbits. 2. In some of the rabbits pretreated for 3 days with large doses of cortisone, bilateral cortical necrosis of the kidneys occurred within 24 hours after endotoxin. However, when a single injection of cortisone was given 6 hours before endotoxin, protection against prostration and death was demonstrable without the subsequent development of renal necrosis. 3. The early lethal reaction caused by small amounts of endotoxin following an injection of colloidal iron saccharate was prevented by cortisone. Cortisone did not protect against the development of renal cortical necrosis in these animals.

Abstract:Background The prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) is increasing worldwide with a marked impact in cardiovascular disease (CVD) and diabetes risk. Aim of the study To evaluate the anthropometric indices for metabolic syndrome (MetS) and determine the optimal cut-off values of waist circumference (WC), body mass index (BMI), and waist height ratio (WHtR) for MetS in Chinese adults aged 40 years and over. Methods A sample of Chinese adults aged 40 years and over including 430 men and 638 women was investigated. Blood pressure, weight, height, and WC were measured; HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C), Triglyceride (TG), and plasma glucose were examined. Receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve analyses were used to evaluate the optimal cut-off point of WC, BMI, and WHtR for MetS. Results According to the ROC curve analysis, the optimal cut-off point for WC was found to be 84.0 cm in men and 80.0 cm in women; for BMI, it was 26.0 in men and 25.0 in women; and for WHtR, it was 0.5 in both men and women. WHtR has the highest predictive value for fast plasma glucose in women, while BMI has the better prediction of dyslipidemia in men. Conclusions Anthropometric indices (WC, BMI, and WHtR) are useful screening tools for obesity, MetS, and CVD risk factors. BMI may be a better indicator than the others for screening obesity, dyslipidemia, and other risk components in Chinese men aged 40 years and over, while WHtR may be better for Chinese women, especially among those aged 70 years and over.
Relationship between Abdominal Volume Index and Body Adiposity Index and Scales of Insulin Resistance and Metabolic Syndrome

Abstract:Introduction, objectives: Obesity is a global health problem with a great negative impact on health. Among the pathologies caused by obesity are insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome, which constitute an increasingly common health problem in both developed and developing countries. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between two scales that assess obesity-based on hip circumference-and metabolic syndrome (MetS) and insulin resistance risk scales as predictors of these alterations. Materials, methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out on 193,462 workers from different Spanish regions and work groups between January 2019 and September 2021. Abdominal volume index (AVI) and body adiposity index (BAI) were evaluated to assess obesity and its association with insulin resistance using three risk scales (TyG index, Triglycerides/HDL, and METS-IR), while their association with metabolic syndrome was determined using the NCEP ATP III, IDF, and JIS models. Results: The results of the ROC curves to determine the predictive value of BAI and AVI in relation to the three criteria evaluated to calculate MetS in all instances presented a higher area under the curve (AUC) for AVI. The high values of AVI stand out for predicting MetS when applying the IDF criteria. The cut-off point in women was 13.70 with a Youden index of 0.802, whereas in men, the cut-off point was set at 17.59 with a Youden index of 0.672. Regarding the relationship of BAI and AVI with insulin resistance risk scales for both sexes, the AUC only revealed high values when using the METS-IR formula for both AVI and BAI. The AVI cut-off points to predict high values of insulin resistance risk scales in women were established at 13.12 with a Youden index of 0.722. In men, the cut-off point was 17.59, with a Youden index of 0.626. The BAI cut-off points in women were set at 33.88 with a Youden index of 0.748. In men, the cut-off point was 27.91, with a Youden index of 0.598. Conclusions: AVI demonstrated its value as a predictor of metabolic syndrome while exclusively applying the IDF criteria. AVI and BAI demonstrated their value as predictors of high values of insulin resistance risk scales only in the case of METS-IR. This predictive value is also higher in women.

Abstract:Introduction: Anthropometric indices are affordable and non-invasive methods for screening metabolic syndrome (MetS). However, determining the most effective index for screening can be challenging. Objective: To investigate the accuracy of anthropometric indices as a screening tool for predicting MetS among apparently healthy individuals in Karachi, Pakistan. Methods: A community-based cross-sectional survey was conducted in Karachi, Pakistan, from February 2022 to August 2022. A total of 1,065 apparently healthy individuals aged 25 years and above were included. MetS was diagnosed using International Diabetes Federation guidelines. Anthropometric indices were defined based on body mass index (BMI), neck circumference (NC), mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC), waist circumference (WC), waist to height ratio (WHtR), conicity index, reciprocal ponderal index (RPI), body shape index (BSI), and visceral adiposity index (VAI). The analysis involved the utilization of Pearson's correlation test and independent t-test to examine inferential statistics. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was also applied to evaluate the predictive capacities of various anthropometric indices regarding metabolic risk factors. Moreover, the area under the curve (AUC) was computed, and the chosen anthropometric indices' optimal cutoff values were determined. Results: All anthropometric indices, except for RPI in males and BSI in females, were significantly higher in MetS than those without MetS. VAI [AUC 0.820 (95% CI 0.78-0.86)], WC [AUC 0.751 (95% CI 0.72-0.79)], WHtR [AUC 0.732 (95% CI 0.69-0.77)], and BMI [AUC 0.708 (95% CI 0.66-0.75)] had significantly higher AUC for predicting MetS in males, whereas VAI [AUC 0.693 (95% CI 0.64-0.75)], WHtR [AUC 0.649 (95% CI 0.59-0.70)], WC [AUC 0.646 (95% CI 0.59-0.61)], BMI [AUC 0.641 (95% CI 0.59-0.69)], and MUAC [AUC 0.626 (95% CI 0.57-0.68)] had significantly higher AUC for predicting MetS in females. The AUC of NC for males was 0.656 (95% CI 0.61-0.70), while that for females was 0.580 (95% CI 0.52-0.64). The optimal cutoff points for all anthropometric indices exhibited a high degree of sensitivity and specificity in predicting the onset of MetS. Conclusion: BMI, WC, WHtR, and VAI were the most important anthropometric predictors for MetS in apparently healthy individuals of Pakistan, while BSI was found to be the weakest indicator.

Abstract:Background: The concomitant occurrence of obesity and metabolic syndrome (MetS) causes a significant worsening of a patient's clinical condition. Indexes that employ anthropometric measurements alone or associated with blood parameters have been investigated for their ability to identify MetS. This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of three of these indexes, the body adiposity index (BAI), the lipid accumulation product index (LAP), and the cardiometabolic index (CMI), in a cohort of 1912 adult subjects with obesity. Methods and Results: MetS was found in 62.3% of the enrolled subjects, with a higher prevalence in males (72.5%) than females (60.9%). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was used to define which index performed better. The BAI was found to be the lowest-performing index, with an ROC area of 0.50, a sensitivity of 30.31%, a specificity of 74.48%, and a likelihood ratio of 1.19. On the contrary, the LAP and the CMI showed a comparable ROC area of 0.82. The LAP had a sensitivity of 63.06%, a specificity of 86.55%, and a likelihood ratio of 4.69, while the CMI had a sensitivity of 67.59%, specificity of 81.55%, and a likelihood ratio of 3.66. The analysis was also performed in the group divided into males and females, with overlapping results. Conclusions: The LAP and the CMI performed better than the BAI in detecting MetS both in the general population with obesity and in the male/female subgroups. In the future, it will be important to validate these useful diagnostic tools in order to employ them in clinical practices.

Comparative Study on Prevalence of Metabolic Syndrome Based on Three Criteria among Adults in Zhejiang Province, China: an Observational Study.

Abstract:Objectives In this study, we aimed to estimate the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) among Chinese adults, describe the disease components and compare utility of the existing international criteria and Chinese diagnostic criteria. Design, setting and participants A retrospective database analysis was conducted for one hospital in Zhejiang province, China. We analysed data (collected in 2017) from a total of 64 902 participants (37 500 males and 27 402 females), aged between 18 and 97 years, and who met the eligibility criteria. Main outcome measures We employed three criteria for MetS proposed by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) in 2005, the 2009 Joint Scientific Statement (harmonising criteria) and the China Diabetes Society (CDS) in 2013 to detect prevalence of MetS. Specifically, we analysed waist circumference, blood pressure, fasting plasma glucose, plasma triglycerides and plasma high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Results We found an estimated age-adjusted MetS prevalence of 20.4% using IDF 2005, 30.0% based on harmonising criteria 2009 and 16.3% under the CDS 2013. This prevalence was higher in males, older adults and increased body mass index. Analysis of agreements among the criteria were 87.2% (IDF and CDS), 87.1% (IDF and harmonising criteria) and 81.6% (CDS and harmonising criteria), while their kappa coefficients were 0.641, 0.708 and 0.572 for IDF versus CDS, IDF versus harmonising criteria and CDS versus harmonising criteria, respectively. The most prevalent MetS component was abdominal obesity (50.1%), followed by dyslipidaemia (49.5%) and hypertension (46.8%) using harmonising criteria. Conclusion These findings revealed moderate agreement among the three criteria with utility in Chinese clinical settings. The harmonising criteria 2009 performed better in early identification of MetS in the Chinese population.
Fat-to-Muscle Ratio: A New Anthropometric Indicator as a Screening Tool for Metabolic Syndrome in Young Colombian People

Abstract:Fat-to-muscle ratio has been proposed as an alternative approach for assessing body fat. The objective of this study was to explore fat-to-muscle ratio thresholds in metabolic syndrome (MetS) diagnosis; it was hypothesised that the fat-to-muscle ratio is a good predictive indicator of MetS in a large population of young Colombian adults. For this purpose, a cross-sectional study was conducted on 1416 subjects (66.6% female), aged from 18.1 to 25.1. As part of the study, measurements of the subjects’ anthropometric indicators, serum lipid indices, blood pressure, and fasting plasma glucose were taken. Body composition was measured through bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). A new variable (ratio of fat mass to muscle mass, in kg) was calculated. Following the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) definition, MetS includes three or more metabolic abnormalities. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and logistic regression determined the discriminatory ability of the fat-to-muscle ratio to predict MetS. According to the IDF, the best fat-to-muscle ratio cut-off point for detecting MetS in men was 0.225 kg, with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.83, sensitivity of 80%, and specificity of 70%. For women, the fat-to-muscle ratio cut-off point was 0.495 kg, the AUC was 0.88, and the sensitivity and specificity were 82% and 80%, respectively. In conclusion, our results showed that the fat-to-muscle ratio cut-off points from ROC analyses demonstrate good discriminatory power for detecting MetS in young Colombian adults.

[Sensitivity and specificity of abdominal adiposity with metabolic syndrome in the elderly]

Abstract:Objectives: It is recognised that abdominal adiposity is associated with cardiovascular risk factors, such as intolerance to glucose, hypertension and dyslipidaemia. The objective of the present study was to assess the relationship of trunk fat and visceral fat index, obtained by anthropometric and bioelectrical impedance, with metabolic syndrome (SM) in an elderly population. Methods: The study included 208 subjects (78 men and 130 women) with a mean age of 82.5 years. Abdominal obesity was assessed by anthropometry and bioelectrical impedance. ROC curves were calculated in order to assess the ability of these variables to diagnose metabolic syndrome. Results: There are differences between men and women in body mass index, waist to height ratio, waist circumference, and bioelectrical impedance measurements as trunk fat and visceral fat (p<.05). Also, found differences in anthropometric indices and variables and abdominal bioelectrical impedance between subjects with and without SM (p<.05) and only exist differences in blood glucose, triglycerides and HDL cholesterol (p<.05). There are significant correlations between anthropometric variables and abdominal bioelectrical impedance (p<.05). Areas under the curve (AUC) of waist to height index, waist circumference, sagittal abdominal diameter, and trunk fat were greater than 0.8 (all p<.01), and in women did not exceed values of 0.65. The cut-off points obtained for BMI were 26.81 and 23.53kg/m2, 102 and 91cm for waist circumference, 22.1 and 20.7cm for sagittal abdominal diameter, 34% and 43.7% for trunk fat, and 17 and 11.5 for visceral fat ratio in men and women, respectively. Conclusions: There are different levels of predictive ability for metabolic syndrome according to gender. Trunk fat and visceral fat index and anthropometric measures have higher predictive ability for metabolic syndrome in men than in women.

Abstract:Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a group of clinical traits directly linked to type 2 diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular diseases, whose prevalence has been rising nationally and internationally. We aimed to evaluate ten known and novel surrogate markers of insulin resistance and obesity to identify MetS in Mexican adults. The present cross-sectional study analyzed 10575 participants from ENSANUT-2018. The diagnosis of MetS was based on the Adult Treatment Panel III (ATP III) criteria and International Diabetes Federation (IDF) criteria, stratified by sex and age group. According to ATP III, the best biomarker was the metabolic score for insulin resistance (METS-IR) in men aged 20–39 and 40–59 years and lipid accumulation product (LAP) in those aged ≥60 years. The best biomarker was LAP in women aged 20–39 and triglyceride–glucose index (TyG) in those aged 40–59 and ≥60 years. Using the IDF criteria, the best biomarker was LAP in men of all ages. TyG gave the best results in women of all ages. The best biomarker for diagnosis of MetS in Mexican adults depends on the criteria, including sex and age group. LAP and TyG are easy to obtain, inexpensive, and especially useful at the primary care level.

Comparison of the Value of Waist Circumference with That of Body Mass Index in Diagnosing Metabolic Syndrome in Children and Adolescents.

Abstract:Objective To evaluate the practical value of waist circumference and body mass index ( BMI ) in diagnosing metabolic syndrome ( MS ) in children and adolescents. Methods A random sampling method was used to select 7893 children and adolescents aged 6 to 18 years from 14 schools in Nanning City from June 2009 to October 2010.They were surveyed to analyze the correlation among waist circumference , BMI and MS detection indicators. Based on MS diagnos tic criteria proposed by CDS and IDF ( 2007 ), receiver operating characteristic curve ( ROC ) was used to compare waist circumference ’ s area under ROC curve and body mass index ( BMI )’ s for reflecting the accuracy of diagnosis of MS. Re sults ( 1 ) Average value of MS detection indicators , except for fasting blood glucose ( FBG ) and aspartate aminotransfer ase ( AST ), was significantly different among the three groups , except that the mean of HDL-C decreased with the in crease of obesity.These indexes in obesity group were higher than other two groups ( P 0.05 ) . ( 2 ) Waist circumference and BMI were positively correlated with hip , waist-hip ratio , SBP , DBP , FBG , TG , LDL-C , FINS and HOMA-IR , but were negatively correlated with HDL-C. ( 3 ) Waist circumference predicted each component of MS more sensitively than BMI. In addition , waist circumference positive predictive value ( except for HDL-C ) was relatively better than BMI. ( 4 ) According to standard CDS , the area under ROC curve of waist circumference and BMI were 0.949 and 0.951 , respectively. According to IDF ( 2007 ), their area were 0.941 and 0.921. Conclusion Waist circumference has more diag nostic value than BMI in children and adolescents with MS. The waist measurement may be helpful for MS screening in children and adolescents.

Abstract:Recent experiments based on cryogenic microwave oscillators have tested the isotropy of the speed of light (Michelson-Morley experiment) at sensitivities of the order of a part in 10/sup 15/, which is a similar sensitivity to other best tests. Further improvements of the accuracy in this type of experiment are not expected due to the already long data set and the systematic error limit. We have constructed a new rotating Michelson-Morley experiment consisting of two cylindrical cryogenic sapphire resonators. The temperature of the dual cavity is controlled at approximately 6 K where the beat frequency between the two oscillators is independent of temperature. By rotating the experiment, an improvement of several orders of magnitude in our sensitivity to light speed anisotropy is expected, as the relevant time variations will now be at a rotation frequency where the frequency stability of the cryogenic oscillators is at its best.
Association Between Anthropometric Indices and Metabolic Risk Factors among Non-Obese Adults: Which Index is the Best?

Abstract:Objective:To find anthropometrical index that can value the metabolic risk factors among community individuals with body mass index(BMI) 25 kg/m 2.Method:In this clinical cross-sectional study,1881 male and 3101 female with BMI 25 kg/m 2(aged between 18 and 95 years)were recruited from communities in Beijing from April 2007 to August 2007.Medical examinations blood weight,height,waist circumference,hip circumference,fasting blood triglycerides,HDL,glucose concentrations,and blood pressure.BMI,waist to hip ratio(WHR),waist circumference(WC) and waist to stature ratio(WSR) were calculated.Four metabolic risk factors were defirred asfollow:① high blood pressure(BP)(diagnosed by systolic BP≥130 mmHg and/or diastolic blood pressure ≥85 mmHg and/or on antihypertensive therapy);② high triglycerides(≥1.7 mmol/L);③low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol(0.9 mmol/L for male and 1.0 mmol/l for female);④ impaired glucose tolerance(plasma glucose concentration≥5.6% or on antidiabetic therapy).The relationships between these indexs and metabolic risk factors were analyzed by using partial correlation analyses,linear regression,and Receiver Operator Characteristic(ROC) curves.Result:All anthropometric indices of obesity were positively correlated with metabolic risk factors.Among the various proposed indices for the evaluation of metabolic risk,ROC analysis revealed significant differences between AUCs for central obesity indexes(WC,WSR,WHR) and BMI.There were no significant differences between AUCs for WC,WSR and WHR.The analysis also revealed that there were no significant differences between AUCs for four indexes(WC,WSR,WHR,BMI) in non-obese women.Conclusion:Central obesity indexes are more sensitive than BMI to evaluate clustering of metabolic risk factors in Chinese non-obese male,while all obesity indexes are equally able to identify metabolic risks in non-obese women.

Abstract:Background: Anthropometric indexes offer a practical approach to identifying metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components. However, there is a scarcity of research on anthropometric indexes tailored to predict metabolic syndrome (MetS) in populations from less developed regions. Objective: This study aimed to examine the association between eight easy-to-collect anthropometric indexes and MetS, and determine the most appropriate indexes to identify the presence of MetS for adults in less developed areas. Methods: A total of 10520 participants aged 18-85 years from Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, China were included in this cross-sectional study. Participants were recruited through a stratified sampling approach from January 1, 2020, to December 31, 2021. MetS was defined using the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) criteria. Eight anthropometric indexes were examined, including body mass index (BMI), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), weight-adjusted waist index (WWI), conicity index (CI), a body shape index (ABSI), lipid accumulation products (LAP), visceral obesity index (VAI), and the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index. Logistic regression analysis and restricted cubic splines (RCSs) were applied to identify the association between the anthropometric indexes. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and the area under the curve (AUC) were analysed to identify and compare the discriminative power of anthropometric indexes in identifying MetS. The Youden index was used to determine a range of optimal diagnostic thresholds. Logistic regression analysis was applied to identify the association between the anthropometric indexes. Results: A total of 3324 (31.60%) participants were diagnosed with MetS. After adjusting for age, ethnicity, current residence, education level, habitual alcohol consumption and tobacco use, all the eight indexes were positively correlated with the risks of MetS (P<0.05). LAP presented the highest adjusted odds ratios (adjOR:35.69, 95%CI: 34.59-36.80), followed by WHtR (adjOR: 29.27, 95%CI: 28.00-30.55), CI (adjOR: 11.58, 95%CI: 10.95-12.22), TyG index (adjOR: 5.53, 95%CI: 5.07-6.04), BMI (adjOR: 3.88, 95%CI: 3.71-4.05), WWI (adjOR: 3.23, 95%CI: 3.02-3.46), VAI (adjOR: 2.11, 95%CI: 2.02-2.20), and ABSI (adjOR: 1.71, 95%CI: 1.62-1.80). Significantly non-linear associations between the eight indexes and the risk of MetS (all P non-linear<0.001) were observed in the restricted cubic splines (RCSs). WHtR was the strongest predictor of MetS for males (AUC:0.91, 95%CI: 0.90 to 0.92, optimal cutoff: 0.53). LAP was the strongest predictor of MetS for females (AUC: 0.89, 95%CI: 0.89 to 0.90, optimal cutoff :28.67). Aim: The study aimed to assess possible differences between women and men in the predictive value and association of nine obesity indices with IR, as assessed by HOMA-IR, in a nondiabetic adult population. Methods: The cross-sectional study included individuals recruited from a hospital in Mexico City. Indices evaluated were waist circumference (WC), hip circumference (HC), body mass index (BMI), waist-to-hip ratio, waist-to-height ratio, visceral adiposity index, body adiposity index (BAI), relative fat mass (RFM), and conicity index (CI). Fasting plasma glucose and insulin were measured to calculate HOMA-IR. Correlation analysis was performed between obesity indices and HOMA-IR. Receiver operating characteristics curve analyses were performed to determine predictive accuracy and cut-off values of obesity indices for IR. A binary logistic regression (BLR) analysis with OR calculation was performed to determine the strength of association with HOMA-IR. Results: We included 378 individuals (59% females, mean age 46.38 ±12.25 years). The highest Pearson coefficient value was observed for BMI among women, while among men, the highest values were found for BMI and BAI. WC among women, and BAI and RFM among men showed the highest sensitivity, while the highest specificity was observed for WHR among women and WC among men with respect to insulin prediction. In the adjusted BLR model, BMI, WC, and WHR among women and WC and RFM and BAI among men were independently associated with IR, showing the highest odds ratio (OR). Conclusion: In Mexican adults, WC, WHR, RFM and BAI could be complementary tools for BMI in screening for IR.
